Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits in Japan, and are profitable for farmers because of their high price. However, much time and labor are required for harvesting, grading, and packing of strawberries, which has hindered the expansion of production scale, so the processes need to be automated. In this study, we developed a method of obtaining the 3D shape of strawberries in order to automate the grading and packing processes. The 3D shape of an abject can be measured by using a laser scanner; however, the method is expensive and time-consuming. In this study nine mirrors were set up around the object at an angle to reflect side views of the object, and the side views were taken simultaneously with a digital camera. The 3D shape was reconstructed from the nine side views by the volume intersection method, and was compared with data measured by a laser scanner. The results showed that the 3D shape of strawberries could be measured by the proposed method. The positional root mean square errors in the reconstructed contours were between 0.5 and 2 mm for most of the tested samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra are presented for a phenanthrene-linked copper(II)-free-base porphyrin dimer. In the lowest electronic excited state, the free-base half is in the (π, π*) triplet state and the copper-porphyrin half is in the doublet ground state due to the copper(II) spin. Because of the interaction between the triplet and doublet spins, the excited state of the dimer is described as a coupled triplet-doublet pair state. By choosing the excitation wavelength, this coupled state is produced via either the intersystem crossing within the free base or the energy transfer from the excited state of the copper porphyrin. The observed TREPR spectra show very large spectral widths compared to that of the triplet state in the free-base monomer. In addition, there is a prominent absorptive band in the center of the spectra regardless of the generation pathway. These features can be interpreted as characteristic properties in an intermediate-coupling case, where the degree of the triplet and doublet mixing largely depends on the molecular orientation relative to the magnetic field. Abstract Background Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is an important hormone in the regulation of phosphate metabolism. It is unclear whether FGF23 is associated with carotid artery calcification (CAAC) in predialysis patients. The present study aimed to clarify the relationship between FGF23 and CAAC in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who were not on dialysis. Methods One-hundred ninety-five predialysis CKD patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. CAAC was assessed using multidetector computed tomography, and the prevalence of CAAC was examined. Intact FGF23 was measured in each patient. The risk factors for CAAC were evaluated using a logistic regression model. Results We found CAAC in 66% of the patients. The prevalence of CAAC significantly increased across CKD stages: it was 37% in CKD stages 1–2, 58% in stage 3; 75% in stage 4, and 77% in stage 5 (p Conclusions The prevalence of CAAC is increased with the decline in the kidney function. FGF23 is independently related to CAAC in patients with CKD who are not on dialysis.

Abstract Background Vascular calcification has been recognized as a risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) events in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, the association of carotid artery calcification (CAAC) with CV events remains unknown. The aim of this study was to elucidate whether CAAC is associated with composite CV events in ESRD patients. Methods One-hundred thirty-three patients who had been started on hemodialysis between 2004 and 2008 were included in this retrospective cohort study. These patients received multi-detector computed tomography to assess CAAC at the initiation of hemodialysis. Composite CV events, including ischemic heart disease, heart failure, cerebrovascular diseases, and CV deaths after the initiation of hemodialysis, were examined in each patient. Results CAAC was found in 94 patients (71%). At the end of follow-up, composite CV events were seen in 47 patients: ischemic heart disease in 20, heart failure in 8, cerebrovascular disease in 12, and CV deaths in 7. The incidence of CAAC was 87% in patients with CV events, which was significantly higher than the rate (62%) in those without. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a significant increase in composite CV events in patients with CAAC compared with those without CAAC (p = 0.001, log-rank test). Univariate analysis using a Cox hazards model showed that age, smoking, common carotid artery intima-media thickness and CAAC were risk factors for composite CV events. In multivariate analysis, only CAAC was a significant risk factor for composite CV events (hazard ratio, 2.85; 95% confidence interval, 1.18-8.00; p = 0.02). Conclusions CAAC is an independent risk factor for CV events in ESRD patients. The assessment of CAAC at the initiation of hemodialysis is useful for predicting the prognosis.

Aims/hypothesis: Diabetic retinopathy is characterised by neuroinflammation that drives neuronal and vascular degenerative pathology, which in many individuals can lead to retinal ischaemia and neovascularisation. Infiltrating macrophages and activated retina-resident microglia have been implicated in the progression of diabetic retinopathy, although the distinct roles of these immune cells remain ill-defined. Our aim was to clarify the distinct roles of macrophages/microglia in the pathogenesis of proliferative ischaemic retinopathies., Methods: Murine oxygen-induced retinopathy is commonly used as a model of ischaemia-induced proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). We evaluated the phenotype macrophages/microglia by immunostaining, quantitative real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), flow cytometry and scRNA-seq analysis. In clinical imaging studies of diabetic retinopathy, we used optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography., Results: Immunostaining, qRT-PCR and flow cytometry showed expression levels of M1-like macrophages/microglia markers (CD80, CD68 and nitric oxide synthase 2) and M2-like macrophages/microglia markers (CD206, CD163 and macrophage scavenger receptor 1) were upregulated in areas of retinal ischaemia and around neo-vessels, respectively. scRNA-seq analysis of the ischaemic retina revealed distinct ischaemia-related clusters of macrophages/microglia that express M1 markers as well as C-C chemokine receptor 2. Inhibition of Rho-kinase (ROCK) suppressed CCL2 expression and reduced CCR2-positive M1-like macrophages/microglia in areas of ischaemia. Furthermore, the area of retinal ischaemia was reduced by suppressing blood macrophage infiltration not only by ROCK inhibitor and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 antibody but also by GdCl 3 . Clinical imaging studies of diabetic retinopathy using OCT indicated potential involvement of macrophages/microglia represented by hyperreflective foci in areas of reduced perfusion., Conclusions/interpretation: These results collectively indicated that heterotypic macrophages/microglia differentially contribute to retinal ischaemia and neovascularisation in retinal vascular diseases including diabetic retinopathy. Objective: No reports on factors or Clinical prediction rules (CPRs) associated with walking independence among patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are available. Evidence regarding epidemiological walking independence rates is also sparse. Here, we sought to (i) obtain epidemiological data on the probability of inpatients with VCFs achieving walking independence, and (ii) develop and validate a CPR to determine walking independence in hospitalized patients with VCFs., Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional observational study of patients aged ≥60 years who were hospitalized for VCF at four hospitals in Japan in 2019-2022. The outcome was walking independence at discharge. We performed a binomial logistic regression analysis to assess predictors of walking independence. Five independent variables were entered: age, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status, cognitive function, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and 10-m walking test. Among the independent variables that were significant, we converted the continuous variables to binary data by calculating cut-off values and then created the CPR. The area under the curve (AUC) was calculated as the measure of the CPR's diagnostic accuracy, and internal validation was conducted by bootstrapping., Results: Of the 240 patients, 188 (78.3%) achieved walking independence. Cognitive function and the BBS score (with a cut-off of 45 points) were identified as significant predictors. We created a CPR using these two items (0-2 points). The CPR's AUC was 0.92 (0.874-0.967), and internal validation by bootstrapping yielded a mean AUC of 0.919 with a slope of 0.965., Conclusion: The walking independence rate of patients with a VCF during hospitalization was 78.3%, with cognitive function and BBS being predictors. The developed CPR performed well enough to retrospectively predict walking independence in VCF patients. Background: The frequency of sudden death and its risk factors in patients undergoing hemodialysis are unknown. This study was performed to examine the association between glycated albumin (GA) and sudden death in Japanese patients undergoing hemodialysis., Methods: In total, 260 patients undergoing hemodialysis aged ≥18 years were retrospectively followed for a mean of 4.6 years. The patients' serum GA levels were divided into tertiles, and the patients' sex, age, albumin level, C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) were selected as adjustment factors. A logistic regression model was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) for the occurrence of sudden death by GA level., Results: Ninety-one patients died during follow-up. Of the 91 deaths, 23 (25.2%) were defined as sudden deaths. Compared with non-sudden death cases, sudden death cases were significantly younger (p = 0.002) and had a higher proportion of men (p = 0.03), a higher proportion of diabetes (p = 0.008), and higher GA levels (p = 0.023). Compared with patients with the lowest GA levels (<15.2%), those with the highest GA levels (≥18.5%) had a sex- and age-adjusted OR for sudden death of 5.40 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.35-21.85]. After adjusting for the albumin level, CRP level, and CTR in addition to sex and age, the OR for sudden death of patients with the highest GA levels increased to 6.80 (95%CI: 1.64-28.08); the relationship did not change., Conclusion: Serum GA levels were significantly associated with sudden death in patients undergoing hemodialysis., (© 2024. Background and Purpose: Post-hip-fracture knee pain (PHFKP) occurs in ∼28%-37% of patients and contributes to a prolonged length of hospital stay (LOS). Analyses of LOS prolongation due to PHFKP have been limited to univariate analyses that do not consider important confounding factors. After adjusting for important confounding factors, we investigated whether the presence or absence of PHFKP makes a difference in LOS in patients with hip fractures., Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of the medical records of patients who had undergone postoperative rehabilitation after surgery for a hip fracture. Demographic and clinical information, discharge parameters, and PHFKP development information were collected from the medical records. Using propensity score matching, we performed a two-group comparison of LOS, the functional independence measure (FIM) motor score (FIMm), FIMm gain, and FIMm effectiveness in patients with and without PHFKP. Six variables were included in the calculation of propensity scores: age, sex, body mass index, fracture type, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status, and independence in activities of daily living at discharge. One-way analysis of variance was used to examine the details of the relationships between LOS and (i) the time of PHFKP development and (ii) pain intensity., Results: We analyzed the cases of 261 patients, of whom 87 (33.3%) developed PHFKP. In propensity score matching, 80 patients were each matched to a patient in the PHFKP or non-PHFKP group. After propensity score matching, a between-group comparison revealed that the PHFKP group had a longer LOS (+11 days) than the non-PHFKP group, and there were no differences in FIMm gain or FIMm effectiveness. The timing of PHFKP development and pain intensity were not related to the LOS., Discussion: Even after adjusting for confounders, the development of PHFKP was found to prolong LOS. Background: A Clinical prediction rule (CPR) for determining multi surfaces walking independence in persons with stroke has not been established., Objectives: To develop a CPR for determining multi surfaces walking independence in persons with stroke., Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective analysis of 419 persons with stroke. We developed a Berg Balance Scale (BBS)-model CPR combining the BBS, comfortable walking speed (CWS) and cognitive impairment, and a Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest)-model CPR combining the Mini-BESTest, CWS, and cognitive impairment. A logistic regression analysis was conducted with multi surfaces walking independence as the dependent variable and each factor as an independent variable. The identified factors were scored (0, 1) based on reported cutoff values. The CPR's accuracy was verified by the area under the curve (AUC). We used a bootstrap method internal validation and calculated the CPR's posttest probability., Results: The logistic regression analysis showed that the BBS, CWS, and cognitive impairment were factors in the BBS model, and the Mini-BESTest was a factor in the Mini-BESTest model. The CPRs were 0-3 points for the BBS model and 0-1 points for the Mini-BESTest model. The AUCs (bootstrap mean AUC) of the CPR score were 0.89 (0.90) for the BBS model and 0.72 (0.72) for the Mini-BESTest model. The negative predictive value (negative likelihood ratio) was 97% (0.054) for CPR scores < 2 for the BBS model and 94% (0.060) for CPR scores < 1 for the Mini-BESTest model., Conclusions: The CPR developed herein is useful for determining multi surfaces walking independence.
