Researchers have experimented with the automation of cinematography and cinematic decision making. Particular contributions include approaches for the compilation and remixing of recorded video content, vision mixing for live video streams, as well as steering of physical and virtual cameras (fixed, moving or aerial). Despite the advancements, many challenges remain. This workshop contribution discusses selected examples and future challenges, and focuses on VR (virtual reality) media formats. The primary objective of this collection of articles is to demonstrate how European industries and academic partners developed methods and technologies for automation and smart production systems. Another important objective is to provide examples of success industial applications for use in workshops and in academic courses. Engineers, technicians and science students can use the wide variety of implementations as examples to learn how many different applications and challenges are included in a project like SemI40 and how it is possible to deal with topics such as automation, process optimisation, energy efficiency, swarm intelligence, machine learning for decision making support, advanced transportation and logistics, compliance in CPS,. . . The broad selection of articles offers engineers, scientists, technicians, and managers numerous examples of best-in-class practices by their peers. They provide results and information for a better understanding of the potential impact of some Industry4.0 aspects. Engineers, managers and scientists with a modest background in Industry4.0 topics and methodologies can understand most of the illustrated topics.

This paper aims to contribute to the discussion on 360◦ video storytelling. It describes the ’Virtual Director’ concept, an enabling technology that was developed to personalize video presentation in applications where multiple live streams are available at the same time. Users are supported in dynamically changing viewpoints, as the Virtual Director essentially auto- mates the tasks of a human director. As research prototypes on a proof-of-concept maturity level, this approach has been evaluated for personalized live event broadcast, group video communication and distributed theatre performances. While on the capture side a 180◦ high-resolution panoramic video feed has been used in one of these application scenarios, so far, only traditional 2D video screen were investigated for playout. The research question this paper aims to contribute to is how technology in general, and an adaptation of the Virtual Direc- tor concept in particular, could assist users in their needs when consuming 360◦ content, both live and recorded. In contexts when users do not want to enjoy the freedom to look into any direction, or when content creators want them to look in a cer- tain direction, how could the interaction with and intervention of a Virtual Director be applied from a storytelling point of view?

Workshops have been an integral part of the ACM TVX conference ever since its establishment in 2014, succeeding the EuroITV conference series. Workshops at TVX are a forum for interactive, open discussion and even practical exercises, typically addressing specific or novel topics and emerging areas

This thesis explores the concept of Virtual Director technology, i.e. software capable of automatic real-time selection and adaptation of live media streams. The metaphor stems from the idea of automating the tasks of a human live event broadcast team by executing cinematic rules. The thesis addresses several research questions on how this complex challenge can be approached technically, how its behavior can be modelled, and what underlying success factors must be respected. Prototypes have been developed and evaluated. For group videoconferencing, a Virtual Director aims to support communication goals by selecting the most appropriate camera, i.e. automatic decisions when and how to cut. For event broadcast, it enables personalization by framing, animating and cutting virtual views within high-resolution panoramic video.

One of the success factors of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is to provide the appropriate content to the users, both suitable for the topics they are currently working on, and their experience level in these topics. Our main contributions in this paper are (i) overcoming the problem of sparse content annotation by using a network based recommendation approach called Associative Network, which exploits the user context as input; (ii) using snippets for not only highlighting relevant parts of documents, but also serving as a basic concept enabling the WIL system to handle text-based and audiovisual content the same way; and (iii) using the Web Tool for Ontology Evaluation (WTE) toolkit for finding the best default semantic similarity measure of the Associative Network for new domains. The approach presented is employed in the software platform APOSDLE, which is designed to enable knowledge workers to learn at work.
