A systematic analysis of the fusion cross sections around the Coulomb barrier energies with stable weakly bound ($^{6}$Li,$^{7}$Li,$^{9}$Be) and strongly bound $^{12}$C projectiles on various targets was performed by using neutron flow model and coupled channels approach. The analysis show that both the models are successful in explaining the near barrier fusion data. Further, it is also observed that the collective degrees of freedom as well as the neutron flow influence the near barrier fusion process involving weakly bound projectiles., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The origin of the large $\alpha$ particle production and incomplete fusion in reactions involving weakly-bound $\alpha$+$x$ cluster nuclei still remains unresolved. While the (two-step) process of breakup followed by capture of the ``free" complementary fragment ($x$) is widely believed to be responsible, a few recent studies suggest the dominant role of (direct) cluster stripping. To achieve an unambiguous experimental discrimination between these two processes, a coincidence measurement between the outgoing $\alpha$ particles and $\gamma$ rays from the heavy residues has been performed for the $^7$Li($\alpha$+triton)+$^{93}$Nb system. Proper choice of kinematical conditions allowed for the first time a significant population of the region accessible only to the direct triton stripping process and not to breakup followed by the capture of the ``free'' triton (from the three-body continuum). This result, also supported by a cluster-transfer calculation, clearly establishes the dominance of the direct cluster-stripping mechanism in the large alpha production.

Nuclear Theory ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The relative importance of neutron transfer and breakup process in reaction around Coulomb barrier energies have been studied for the $^{7}$Li+$^{124}$Sn system. Coupled channel calculations have been performed to understand the one neutron stripping and pickup cross sections along with the breakup in the $^{7}$Li+$^{124}$Sn system. The systematics of one and two neutron striping and pickup cross sections with $^7$Li projectile on several targets show an approximate universal behaviour that have been explained by a simple model. Complete reaction mechanism have been studied by comparing the reaction cross sections with cumulative cross sections of total fusion and one neutron transfer., Comment: 6 figures

Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
Measurement of angular distributions and energy spectra of $\alpha$ and deuterons through breakup, transfer and incomplete fusion processes to dis-entangle their relative contributions and to investigate relative importance of breakup-fusion compared to transfer. Inclusive $\alpha$ production cross-sections have been measured for $^6$Li + $^{51}$V system near Coulomb barrier energies. Theoretical calculations for estimation of various reaction channels contributing to $\alpha$ production have been performed with finite range coupled reaction method using \textsc{FRESCO} code. The cross-sections from non-capture breakup (NCBU) ($\alpha$ + \textit{d}) and 1\textit{n}, 1\textit{p}, and 1\textit{d} transfer channels, compound nuclear decay channel and incomplete fusion (ICF) leading to $\alpha$ production were estimated to get the cumulative production cross-sections. Contributions from breakup, transfer and incomplete fusion channels could reproduce the integral direct $\alpha$ production cross-sections and their angular distributions quite well. The direct $\alpha$ production cross-sections are in agreement with other targets. The $\alpha$ production cross-sections are higher compared to the deuteron production. Kinematic analysis of the energy spectra of $\alpha$ particles and deuterons suggest that $\alpha$ particle spectra is dominated by breakp-fusion and deuteron spectra have contribution of breakup and transfer reactions. A systematic study of direct $\alpha$ production with various targets follow a universal behavior on average but noticeable differences are observed for different targets. A ratio of $\alpha$ and deuteron yields for a wide mass range of targets shows a saturation above barrier and an increasing production of $\alpha$ particles relative to deuteron around Coulomb barrier., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The production of $\alpha$-particles in reactions using both the strongly and weakly bound projectiles at energies around the Coulomb barrier show several interesting features. To understand these, the role of various reaction mechanisms responsible for $\alpha$-production, such as non-capture breakup, capture of only one of the fragments subsequent to projectile breakup and their contribution to reaction cross sections have been investigated. A systematic study of the $\alpha$-particle production based on available data for various projectile target systems have been performed and a classification based on projectile type is obtained., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
To disentangle the role of shell effects and dynamics, fission fragment mass distributions of $^{191}$Au, a nucleus in the newly identified island of mass asymmetric fission in the sub-lead region, have been measured down to excitation energy of $\approx$20 MeV above the fission barrier via two different entrance channels, viz. $^{16}$O+$^{175}$Lu and $^{37}$Cl+$^{154}$Sm reactions. Apart from having signature of the shell effects in both the cases, clear experimental evidence of quasifission has been observed in the mass distributions of the Cl induced reaction, that has also been substantiated by the theoretical calculations. This crucial evidence along with a systematic analysis of available experimental data has revealed that the dynamics in the entrance channel has significant influence on most of the reactions used earlier to explore the persistence of recently discovered mass asymmetry in $\beta$-delayed fission at low energy in this mass region, ignoring which might lead to ambiguity in interpreting the heavy-ion data., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The reaction mechanism of deep-inelastic multinucleon transfer processes in the $^{16}$O+$^{27}$Al reaction at an incident $^{16}$O energy ($E_{\rm lab}=134$ MeV) substantially above the Coulomb barrier has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Elastic-scattering angular distribution, total kinetic energy loss spectra and angular distributions for various transfer channels have been measured. The $Q$-value- and angle-integrated isotope production cross sections have been deduced. To obtain deeper insight into the underlying reaction mechanism, we have carried out a detailed analysis based on the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory. A recently developed method, TDHF+GEMINI, has been applied to evaluate production cross sections for secondary products. From a comparison between the experimental and theoretical cross sections, we find that the theory qualitatively reproduces the experimental data. Significant effects of secondary light-particle emissions are demonstrated. Possible interplay between fusion-fission, deep-inelastic, multinucleon transfer and particle evaporation processes are discussed., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, including Supplemental Material; v2 - two figures and one table added, revised according to the Referee's suggestions

Nuclear Theory ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We use the breakup absorption model to simultaneously describe the measured cross-sections of the Complete fusion (CF), Incomplete fusion (ICF), and Total fusion (TF) in nuclear reactions induced by weakly bound nuclei $^{6,7}$Li on $^{209}$Bi and $^{198}$Pt targets. The absorption cross-sections are calculated using the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channels (CDCC) method with different choices of short range imaginary potentials to get the ICF, CF and TF cross-sections. It is observed that the cross-sections for deuteron-ICF/deuteron-capture are of similar magnitude as the $\alpha$-ICF/$\alpha$-capture, in case of $^{6}$Li projectile, while the cross-sections for triton-ICF/triton-capture is more dominant than $\alpha$-ICF/$\alpha$-capture in case of $^{7}$Li projectile. Both these observations are also corroborated by the experimental data. The ratio of ICF to TF cross-sections, which defines the value of fusion suppression factor is found to be in agreement with the data available from the literature. The cross-section ratio of CF/TF and ICF/TF show opposite behavior, the former decreases while the latter increases as the energy is lowered, which shows the dominance of ICF at below barrier energies. We have also studied the correlation of the ICF cross-sections with the non-capture breakup (NCBU) cross-sections as a function of energy, which shows that the NCBU is more significant than ICF at below barrier energies., Comment: Accepted in Phys. The two-step process of transfer followed by breakup is explored by measuring a rather complete set of exclusive data for reaction channels populating states in the ejectile continua of the $^7$Li+$^{93}$Nb system at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. The cross sections for $\alpha+\alpha$ events from one proton pickup were found to be smaller than those for $\alpha+d$ events from one neutron stripping and $\alpha+t$ events from direct breakup of $^7$Li. Coupled channels Born approximation and continuum discretized coupled channels calculations describe the data well and support the conclusion that the $\alpha+d$ and $\alpha+\alpha$ events are produced by direct transfer to unbound states of the ejectile., Comment: Published in Phys. Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
Measurements of fusion cross-sections of 7Li and 12C with 198Pt at deep sub-barrier energies are reported to unravel the role of the entrance channel in the occurrence of fusion hindrance. The onset of fusion hindrance has been clearly observed in 12C + 198Pt system but not in 7Li + 198Pt system, within the measured energy range. Emergence of the hindrance, moving from lighter (6,7Li) to heavier (12C,16O) projectiles is explained employing a model that considers a gradual transition from a sudden to adiabatic regime at low energies. The model calculation reveals a weak effect of the damping of coupling to collective motion for the present systems as compared to that obtained for systems with heavier projectiles., Comment: Accepted in Phys. Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
Decay of $^{210}$Po compound nucleus formed in light and heavy-ion induced fusion reactions has been analyzed simultaneously using a consistent prescription for fission barrier and nuclear level density incorporating shell correction and its damping with excitation energy. Good description of all the excitation functions have been achieved with a fission barrier of 21.9 $\pm$ 0.2 MeV. For this barrier height, the predicted statistical pre-fission neutrons in heavy-ion fusion-fission are much smaller than the experimental values, implying the presence of dynamical neutrons due to dissipation even at these low excitation energies ($\sim$ 50~MeV) in the mass region A $\sim$ 200. When only heavy-ion induced fission excitation functions and the pre-fission neutron multiplicities are included in the fits, the deduced best fit fission barrier depends on the assumed fission delay time during which dynamical neutrons can be emitted. A fission delay of (0.8 $\pm$ 0.1 )$\times 10^{-19}$ s has been estimated corresponding to the above fission barrier height assuming that the entire excess neutrons over and above the statistical model predictions are due to the dynamics. The present observation has implication on the study of fission time scale/ nuclear viscosity using neutron emission as a probe.

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM., Comment: Correspondence should be addressed to cms-and-lhcb-publication-committees@cern.ch

- Abstract
Fusion cross section data for 9 Be projectile on 169 Tm , 181 Ta , 187 Re and 197 Au targets have been analyzed using the Stelson model. The threshold (lowest) barriers obtained from the fit to the data have been compared with the ones calculated starting from the projectile/target neutron separation energy ( S n ) values. The respective direct reaction cross sections, viz., neutron transfer, non-capture breakup and incomplete fusion have been added to the corresponding fusion cross sections, to obtain the reaction cross sections for the above systems. The Stelson model cross section expression has also been used to fit the reaction cross section data. It has been found that while the threshold barrier for fusion is related to the S n of the target, the corresponding barrier from the reaction data is connected to the S n (breakup energy) of the projectile. Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The role of the breakup process and one neutron stripping on the near barrier fusion are investigated for the weakly bound projectile $^{9}$Be on $^{28}$Si, $^{89}$Y, $^{124}$Sn, $^{144}$Sm and $^{208}$Pb targets. Continuum-discretized coupled channels (CDCC) calculations for the breakup with a $^{8}$Be + n model of the $^{9}$Be nucleus and coupled reactions channels (CRC) calculations for the one neutron stripping to several single particle states in the target are performed for these systems. A good description of the experimental fusion cross sections above the Coulomb barrier is obtained from the CDCC-CRC calculations for all the systems. The calculated incomplete fusion probabilities for different target systems are found to be consistent with the systematic behaviour of the complete fusion suppression factors as a function of target atomic mass, obtained from the experimental data., Comment: To appear in Phys. Introduction: Malnutrition is the condition that results from eating a diet in which certain nutrients are lacking, in excess, or in the wrong proportions. Child is the victim of interplay of nutrition, socioeconomic (SE), and health factors that cause malnutrition. Aim: The aim is to study the epidemiological determinants of malnutrition and health status of under-5 children. Material and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was carried out in 600 under-5 (0–59 months) children from March 1, 2012 to July 31, 2013, in Rural Health Training Center field practice area by house-to-house survey till the desired sample was achieved. Sociodemographic information, mother's obstetric history, clinical examination, and anthropometry measurement of under-5 children and immunization status (either by history or by available medical records) was obtained. Results: Majority (534 [89%]) of children were Hindus, from lower SE Class III and IV, 337 (56.2%) and 193 (32.2%), respectively. Sex ratio was 980 females/1000 males. Quarter (122) of the children belonged to age group 0–11 months followed by 138 (23%) and 123 (20.5%) from 12 to 23 months and 48–59 months, respectively. The prevalence of wasting, stunting, and underweight was 151 (25.2%), 237 (39.5%), and 223 (37.2%), respectively. Acute morbidity rate was observed to be 47 (7.8%). Full immunization appropriate for age was 537 (89.5%). Under-5 mortality rate was 30/1000 under-5 years children per year (n = 18). Conclusion: Prevalence of malnutrition was high in males and lower SE Class (III and IV). Acute morbidity was higher in males than females.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The extreme back-angle evaporation spectra of alpha, lithium, beryllium, boron and carbon from different compound nuclei near A=100 (EX=76-210 MeV) have been compared with the predictions of standard statistical model codes such as 'CASCADE' and 'GEMINI'. It was found that the shapes of the alpha spectra agree well with the predictions of the statistical models. However the spectra of lithium, beryllium, boron and carbon show significantly gentler slopes implying higher temperature of the residual nuclei, even though the spectra satisfy all other empirical criteria of statistical emissions. The observed slope anomaly was found to be largest for lithium and decreases at higher excitation energy. These results could not be understood by adjusting the parameters of the statistical models or from reaction dynamics and might require examining the statistical model from a quantum mechanical perspective., Comment: 28 pages, 28 Figures, 1 Table; A shorter version has already been published in Physical Review C on June 10, 2013

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
Two cluster structures of 9Be namely, 5He+4He and 8Be+n have been considered for its breakup to describe the available data on elastic scattering for 9Be projectile with 28Si, 64Zn and 144Sm targets. The results of these calculations suggest that the breakup coupling effects are significant for 5He+4He cluster model at above the barrier energies, while they are dominant at relatively lower energies for 8Be+n model. The addition of one neutron stripping channel in the 8Be+n model gives an overall good description of the elastic data for all the systems considered. The couplings generated by breakup in 8Be+n model have different behaviour than the coupling effects obtained within the 5He+4He model, the former being more prominent at lower energies and for the heavier target systems. The behaviour of extracted dynamic polarisation potentials (DPP) generated due to breakup and one neutron transfer couplings have been investigated., Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev. C

Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
Exclusive measurements of prompt $\gamma$-rays from the heavy-residues with various light charged particles in the $^7$Li + $^{198}$Pt system, at an energy near the Coulomb barrier (E/$V_b$ $\sim$ 1.6) are reported. Recent dynamic classical trajectory calculations, constrained by the measured fusion, $\alpha$ and $t$ capture cross-sections have been used to explain the excitation energy dependence of the residue cross-sections. These calculations distinctly illustrate a two step process, breakup followed by fusion in case of the capture of $t$ and $\alpha$ clusters; whereas for $^{6}$He + $p$ and $^{5}$He + $d$ configurations, massive transfer is inferred to be the dominant mechanism. The present work clearly demonstrates the role played by the cluster structures of $^7$Li in understanding the reaction dynamics at energies around the Coulomb barrier., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM-stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy-loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described., Comment: accepted for publication on EPJA

Systematics of neutron scattering cross sections on various materials for neutron energies up to several hundred MeV are important for ADSS applications. Ramsauer model is well known and widely applied to understand systematics of neutron nucleus total cross sections. In this work, we examined the role of nuclear effective radius parameter (r$_0$) on Ramsauer model fits of neutron total cross sections. We performed Ramsauer model global analysis of the experimental neutron total cross sections reported by W. P. Abfalterer, F. B. Bateman, {\it et. al.,}, from 20MeV to 550MeV for nuclei ranging from Be to U . The global fit functions which can fit total cross section data over periodic table are provided along with the required global set of parameters. The global fits predict within $\pm 8%$ deviation to data, showing the scope for improvement. It has been observed that a finer adjustment of r$_0$ parameter alone can give very good Ramsauer model description of neutron total scattering data within $\pm 4%$ deviation. The required r$_0$ values for Ramsauer model fits are shown as a function of nuclear mass number and an empirical formula is suggested for r$_0$ values as a function of mass number. In optical model approach for neutron scattering, we have modified the real part of Koning-Deleroche potentails to fit the neutron total cross sections using SCAT2 code. The modified potentails have a different energy dependence beyond 200MeV of neutron energy and fit the total cross sections from Al to Pb., Comment: 9 pages, 20figures, Poster number ND-1457, ND2010 Conference in Korea

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Fusion excitation functions are measured for the system $^6$Li+$^{28}$Si using the characteristic $\gamma$-ray method, encompassing both the sub-barrier and above barrier regions, viz., $E_{lab}$= 7-24 MeV. Two separate experiments were performed, one for the above barrier region ($E_{lab}$= 11-24 MeV) and another for the below barrier region ($E_{lab}$= 7-10 MeV). The results were compared with our previously measured fusion cross section for the $^7$Li+$^{28}$Si system. We observed enhancement of fusion cross section at sub-barrier regions for both $^6$Li and $^7$Li, but yield was substantially larger for $^6$Li. However, for well above barrier regions, similar type of suppression was identified for both the systems., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, as accepted for publication in Eur.Phys.J.A

Ensuring the radiation hardness of PbWO4 crystals was one of the main priorities during the construction of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at CERN. The production on an industrial scale of radiation hard crystals and their certification over a period of several years represented a difficult challenge both for CMS and for the crystal suppliers. The present article reviews the related scientific and technological problems encountered., Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures, available on CMS information server at http://cms.cern.ch/iCMS/

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The sub-barrier fusion excitation functions are measured for the first time for the system $^7$Li +$^{28}$Si by the characteristic $\gamma$-ray method in the energy range $E_{lab}$= 7-11.5 MeV. The results show an enhancement, below the barrier, by about a factor of two when compared with the one-dimensional barrier penetration (1D BPM) model. Introduction of coupling with the rotational 2$^{+}$ state (1.779MeV) of the target improves the fit somewhat, but still an enhancement of about 25-40% remains., Comment: 4 pages,3 figures, submitted to Physical Review C

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Complete fusion excitations for 11,10B+159Tb have been measured at energies around the respective Coulomb barriers, and the existing complete fusion measurements for 7Li+159Tb have been extended to higher energies. The measurements show significant reduction of complete fusion cross sections at above-barrier energies for both the reactions, 10B+159Tb and 7Li+159Tb, when compared to those for 11B+159Tb. The comparison shows that the extent of suppression of complete fusion cross sections is correlated with the
-separation energies of the projectiles. Also, the two reactions, 10B+159Tb and 7Li+159Tb were found to produce incomplete fusion products at energies near the respective Coulomb barriers, with the - particle emitting channel being the favoured incomplete fusion process in both the cases., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures To be published in Phys. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The observation of a large cross-section for the alpha + d channel compared to breakup into the alpha + t channel from an exclusive measurement for the 7Li+65Cu system at 25 MeV is presented. A detailed analysis of the angular distribution using coupled channels Born approximation calculations has provided clear evidence that the observed alpha + d events arise from a two step process, i.e. direct transfer to the 2.186 MeV (3+) resonance in the alpha + d continuum of 6Li followed by breakup, and are not due to final state interaction effects., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, To be published in Phys. The measurement of light charged particles evaporated from the reaction 6,7Li+6Li has been carried out at extreme backward angle in the energy range 14 - 20 MeV. Calculations from the code ALICE91 show that the symmetry of the target-projectile combination and the choice of level density parameter play important roles in explaining the evaporation spectra for these light particle systems. In above barrier energy region the fusion cross-section is not suppressed for these loosely bound nuclei., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The fusion cross sections from well above barrier to extreme sub-barrier energies have been analysed using the energy (E) and angular momentum (L) dependent barrier penetration model ({\small{ELDBPM}}). From this analysis, the adiabatic limits of fusion barriers have been determined for a wide range of heavy ion systems. The empirical prescription of Wilzynska and Wilzynski has been used with modified radius parameter and surface tension coefficient values consistent with the parameterization of the nuclear masses. The adiabatic fusion barriers calculated from this prescription are in good agreement with the adiabatic barriers deduced from {\small{ELDBPM}} fits to fusion data. The nuclear potential diffuseness is larger at adiabatic limit, resulting in a lower $\hbar\omega$ leading to increase of "logarithmic slope" observed at energies well below the barrier. The effective fusion barrier radius and curvature values are anomalously smaller than the predictions of known empirical prescriptions. A detailed comparison of the systematics of fusion barrier with and without L-dependence has been presented., Comment: Revtex file of 6 pages and 3 eps figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Decay sequence of hot ${31}^$P nucleus has been investigated through exclusive light charged particle measurements in coincidence with individual evaporation residues using the reaction ${19}^$F (96 MeV) + ${12}^$C. Information on the sequential decay chain have been extracted by confronting the data with the predictions of the statistical model. It is observed from the present analysis that such exclusive light charged particle data may be used as a powerful tool to probe the decay sequence of the hot light compound systems., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, Physical Review C (in press)

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The energy spectra of evaporated light charged particles (LCP) $\alpha$, p, d and t have been measured in $7^$Li(47 MeV) + ${24}^$Mg and ${19}^$F(96 MeV)+ ${12}^$C reactions. Both the systems populate the same compound nucleus ${31}^$F at excitation energy E$^*$ ~ 60 MeV. It has been observed that the light particle spectra obtained in Li + Mg reaction follow standard statistical model prediction, whereas a deformed configuration of the compound nucleus is needed to explain the LCP spectra for F + C reaction, which has been attributed to the effect of larger input angular momentum in the case of ${19}^$F(96 MeV)+ ${12}^$C system., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, revised version, accepted for publication in Euro. The Sun's connection with the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere is carried out through the exchange of electromagnetic and mass flux and is regulated by a complex interconnection of processes. During space weather events, solar flares, or fast streams of solar atmosphere strongly disturb the Earth's environment. Often the electric currents that connect the different parts of the Sun-Earth system become unstable and explosively release the stored electromagnetic energy in one of the more dramatic expressions of space weather—the geomagnetic storm and substorm. Some aspects of the magnetosphere-ionosphere connection that generates auroral arcs during space weather events are well-known. However, several fundamental problems remain unsolved because of the lack of unambiguous identification of the magnetic field connection between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere. The correct mapping between different regions of the magnetosphere and their foot-points in the ionosphere, coupled with appropriate distributed measurements of plasma and fields in focused regions of the magnetosphere, is necessary to establish unambiguously that a given magnetospheric process is the generator of an observed arc. We present a new paradigm that should enable the resolution of the mapping ambiguities. The paradigm calls for the application of energetic electron beams as magnetic field tracers. The three most important problems for which the correct magnetic field mapping would provide closure to are the substorm growth phase arcs, the expansion phase onset arcs and the system of arcs that emerge from the magnetosphere-ionosphere connection during the development of the early substorm expansion phase phenomenon known as substorm current wedge (SCW). In this communication we describe how beam tracers, in combination with distributed measurements in the magnetosphere, can be used to disentangle the mechanisms that generate these critical substorm phenomena. Since the application of beams as tracers require demonstration that the beams can be injected into the loss cone, that the spacecraft potentials induced by the beam emission are manageable, and that sufficient electron flux reaches the atmosphere to be detectable by optical or radio means after the beam has propagated thousands of kilometers under competing effects of beam spread and constriction as well as effects of beam-induced instabilities, in this communication we review how these challenges are currently being addressed and discuss the next steps toward the realization of active experiments in space using relativistic electron beams.

- Abstract
Cells interact with the extracellular matrix (ECM) via cell–ECM adhesions. These physical interactions are transduced into biochemical signals inside the cell which influence cell behaviour. Although cell–ECM interactions have been studied extensively, it is not completely understood how immature (nascent) adhesions develop into mature (focal) adhesions and how mechanical forces influence this process. Given the small size, dynamic nature and short lifetimes of nascent adhesions, studying them using conventional microscopic and experimental techniques is challenging. Computational modelling provides a valuable resource for simulating and exploring various “what if?” scenarios in silico and identifying key molecular components and mechanisms for further investigation. Here, we present a simplified mechano-chemical model based on ordinary differential equations with three major proteins involved in adhesions: integrins, talin and vinculin. Additionally, we incorporate a hypothetical signal molecule that influences adhesion (dis)assembly rates. We find that assembly and disassembly rates need to vary dynamically to limit maturation of nascent adhesions. The model predicts biphasic variation of actin retrograde velocity and maturation fraction with substrate stiffness, with maturation fractions between 18–35%, optimal stiffness of ∼1 pN/nm, and a mechanosensitive range of 1-100 pN/nm, all corresponding to key experimental findings. Sensitivity analyses show robustness of outcomes to small changes in parameter values, allowing model tuning to reflect specific cell types and signaling cascades. The model proposes that signal-dependent disassembly rate variations play an underappreciated role in maturation fraction regulation, which should be investigated further. We also provide predictions on the changes in traction force generation under increased/decreased vinculin concentrations, complementing previous vinculin overexpression/knockout experiments in different cell typ
