Abstract To explore the clinical characteristics of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 nationwide, especially the effect factors of asymptomatic infection and disappearance of clinical symptoms. A total of 66,448 COVID-19 patients in China who have been diagnosed by nucleic acid test or rapid antigen test were surveyed online (December 24, 2022 to January 16, 2023). Our cross-sectional study used descriptive analyses and binary Logistics regression model to assess the correlation between the clinical characteristics and relative factors, including age, gender, pre-existing conditions, reinfection, vaccination and treatment. A total of 64,515 valid questionnaires were collected. Among included participants, 5969 of which were asymptomatic. The symptoms were mainly upper respiratory symptoms, including dry and itchy throat (64.16%), sore throat (59.95%), hoarseness (57.90%), nasal congestion (53.39%). In binary Logistics regression model, we found that male, no pre-existing conditions, reinfection and vaccination have positive correlations with the appearance of asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. In Cox proportional-hazards regression model, considering all clinical symptoms disappeared in 14 days as outcome, we found that ≤ 60 years old, male, no pre-existing conditions, vaccination and adopted treatment have positive correlations with rapid amelioration of clinical symptoms in COVID-19 patients. The clinical symptoms of the participants were mainly upper respiratory symptoms which were according with the infection of Omicron variant. Factors including age, gender, pre-existing conditions and reinfection could influence the clinical characteristics and prognosis of COVID-19 patients. Importantly, vaccination has positive significance for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Lastly, the use of Chinese medicine maybe beneficial to COVID-19 patients, however, reasonable guidance is necessary.

Abstract In addressing the challenge of ships being prone to occlusion in multi‐target situations during ship target detection, leading to missed and false detections, this paper proposes an enhanced ship detection algorithm for YOLOv7‐tiny. The proposed method incorporates several key modifications. Firstly, it introduces the Convolutional Block Attention Module in the Backbone section of the original model, emphasizing position information while attending to channel features to enhance the network's ability to extract crucial information. Secondly, it replaces standard convolution with GSConv convolution in the Neck section, preserving detailed information and reducing computational load. Subsequently, the lightweight operator Content‐Aware ReAssembly of Features is employed to replace the original nearest‐neighbour interpolation, mitigating the loss of feature information during the up‐sampling process. Finally, the localization loss function, SIOU Loss, is utilized to calculate loss, expedite training convergence, and enhance detection accuracy. The research results indicate that the precision of the improved model is 91.2%, mAP@0.5 is 94.5%, and the F1‐score is 90.7%. These values are 3.7%, 5.5%, and 4.2% higher than those of the original YOLOv7‐tiny model, respectively. The improved model effectively enhances detection accuracy. Additionally, the improved model achieves an FPS of 145.4, meeting real‐time requirements.

Abstract Background The selection of post-core material holds significant importance in endodontically treated teeth, influencing stress distribution in the dental structure after restoration. The use of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) glass fiber post-core possesses a better adaptation for different root canal morphologies, but whether this results in a more favorable stress distribution has not been clearly established. Materials and methods This study employed finite element analysis to establish three models of post-core crown restoration with normal, oversized, and dumbbell-shaped root canals. The three models were restored using three different materials: CAD/CAM glass fiber post-core (CGF), prefabricated glass fiber post and resin core (PGF), and cobalt-chromium integrated metal post-core (Co-Cr), followed by zirconia crown restoration. A static load was applied and the maximum equivalent von Mises stress, maximum principal stress, stress distribution plots, and the peak of maximum displacement were calculated for dentin, post-core, crown, and the cement acting as the interface between the post-core and the dentin. Results In dentin of three different root canal morphology, it was observed that PGF exhibited the lowest von Mises stresses, while Co-Cr exhibited the highest ones under a static load. CGF showed similar stress distribution to that of Co-Cr, but the stresses were more homogeneous and concentrated apically. In oversized and dumbbell-shaped root canal remnants, the equivalent von Mises stress in the cement layer using CGF was significantly lower than that of PGF. Conclusions In oversized root canals and dumbbell-shaped root canals, CGF has shown good performance for restoration of endodontically treated teeth. Clinical relevance This study provides a theoretical basis for clinicians to select post-core materials for residual roots with different root canal morphologies and should help to reduce the occurrence of complications such as root fracture and post-core debonding.

Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate stomatological students’ learning efficacy and their attitude towards Lecture-Team-Based Learning (LTBL) on topics regarding the design of removable partial dentures via in-class, online, and both in combination. Methods Students from seven distinct grades participated in the course in their fourth academic year (Years 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021). Students of Years 2015–2019 attended in-class LTBL, students of Year 2020 attended online LTBL, and students of Year 2021 attended the combination mode. The scores of three examinations were compared, namely, individual readiness assessment test, team readiness assurance test, and individual application test. Visual Analog Scales (VAS) were used for students to self-assess their mastery of prosthodontics knowledge before and after the course. Anonymous questionnaires were delivered to evaluate their satisfaction with LTBL via a Likert scale. Results In each academic year, the three exam scores were significantly improved as the course progressed and VAS-post scores were significantly higher than VAS-pre scores. The three examination and VAS scores of students in Year 2020 were significantly lower than those in Years 2019 and 2021. Students were highly satisfied with the LTBL course based on the three parameters of knowledge acquisition, teamwork, and classroom atmosphere. Conclusion Students were highly satisfied with the LTBL course and their learning performance was improved as the course progressed both in-class and online. Online LTBL could be adopted when students have to study online, while in-class LTBL could perform better when combined with video records of an online LTBL course.

Mobile social media has become indispensable to university students' communication with various socio-demographic populations, exposing them to diverse social networks and augmenting their network heterogeneity. Although the psychological ramifications of network heterogeneity have been extensively examined, its correlated academic outcomes remain inconclusive. The current study formulated an integrated theoretical research model based on the stressor-stress-outcome framework to investigate the influence of factors associated with network heterogeneity (specifically, privacy invasion, social comparison, self-presentation, and excessive WeChat use) on social media exhaustion, psychological well-being, and academic well-being among university students. Furthermore, the research examined the mediating effect of social network exhaustion among network heterogeneity, psychological well-being, and academic well-being. A cross-sectional survey of 1128 WeChat users revealed that social comparison and excessive WeChat use had positive associations with social network exhaustion, while privacy invasion and self-presentation were negatively correlated with social network exhaustion. Additionally, social network exhaustion was negatively correlated with psychological well-being and academic well-being. Furthermore, social network exhaustion mediated the influences of network heterogeneity on psychological well-being and academic well-being. These obtained results could contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the underlying causes of social network exhaustion and the multifaceted effects of network heterogeneity. These insights may prove valuable for practitioners to enhance university students’ psychological states and academic performance in the contemporary mobile media-saturated environment.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Bacillus species exhibit biocontrol activity against fungal pathogens of fruits and vegetables. However, research on the effect of VOCs on Aspergillus flavus in stored grains is limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of VOCs extracted from the strain R2, which was isolated from unhulled rice and identified as Bacillus paramycoides on A. flavus in vitro and unhulled rice. R2 VOCs effectively inhibited conidial germination and the hyphal growth of A. flavus in vitro. Moreover, R2 VOCs reduced the fungal population, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) levels, and free fatty acid (FFA) value by 90.8%, 67%, and 38.7%, respectively, in unhulled rice. Eighteen R2 VOCs were identified using headspace solid-phase micro-extraction gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and the individual activity of the VOCs against A. flavus was tested in vitro. Benzaldehyde (Ben) and 3,7-dimethyl-1-octanol (Dmo) showed strong inhibitory activities against A. flavus on PDA plates, with inhibition rates of 100% and 91.2%, respectively, at a concentration of 20 μL/dish. Ben at the concentration of 0.09 mg/mL, Dmo at the concentration of 0.07 mg/mL, or a mixture of both at halved concentrations could reduce the fungal population, AFB1 levels, and FFA content in unhulled rice. Our findings suggest that R2 VOCs are good alternatives to traditional chemical fumigants for suppressing A. flavus in stored grains. However, further research is necessary to establish the optimal fumigation concentration of these two components in unhulled rice. The impact of their residues on grain quality should be explored through sensory evaluation and nutritional analysis, and their safety to the environment and human body should be evaluated through safety assessment.

Abstract Mounting evidence has proposed the importance of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and tripartite motif 31 (TRIM31) in certain malignancies. Our research aimed to clarify the correlation between aberrant TRIM31 expression and the Wnt/β-catenin pathway during gastric cancer (GC) oncogenesis and development. TRIM31 was drastically elevated in GC tissues and was closely associated with aggressive clinical outcomes and poor prognosis. Moreover, TRIM31 downregulation attenuated GC cell proliferation and invasion in vitro. Mechanistically, TRIM31 could bind and ubiquitinate Axin1 protein, thereby facilitating the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Additionally, Axin1 knockdown partially abrogated the inhibitory effects on the proliferative, invasive and migratory abilities of GC cells induced by TRIM31 silencing. Furthermore, TRIM31 was negatively correlated with Axin1 protein expression in GC tissues. In summary, we revealed a new TRIM31-Axin1-Wnt/β-catenin axis that contributed greatly to the progression of GC, and targeting this regulatory axis may represent an effective treatment for GC patients.

In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the dynamic cointegration relationship between international crude oil, natural gas, and coal price indices from 2009 to 2023, revealing the changes and differences in the cointegration relationship between these three prices during different periods. Utilizing statistical analysis and economic modeling, we found significant cointegration among these energy prices during the initial decade-long observation period, indicating their close interaction in the global energy market influenced by supply and demand fundamentals, macroeconomic conditions, and geopolitical landscapes. However, since 2020, this long-standing stable cointegration relationship has been severely disrupted due to the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and escalating geopolitical tensions, leading to a notable increase in volatility and uncertainty in the energy market. Further analysis highlights that, in recent years, with the strengthening of global climate governance and the advancement of the low-carbon transition trend, fossil fuel markets, particularly high-carbon-emitting crude oil and coal markets, have undergone significant adjustments. Meanwhile, the role of natural gas as a transitional clean energy source has become increasingly prominent. The findings of this study have significant implications for energy policy formulation, market risk management, and strategic planning in the energy industry, while providing directions for future research on resilience and adaptability in the transition process of energy systems.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) has severely impacted the lives and health of patients for ages. Although the modern methods used for the prevention and treatment of CHD have been increasingly perfected, clinical problems remain that require solutions. In the prevention and treatment of CHD with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), great therapeutic advantages have been demonstrated. However, the expression of its advantages relies on scientific evidence-based research and evaluation, which require further optimization and improvement. Therefore, this review aims to comprehensively emphasize our understanding of the current deficiencies in TCM evidence-based studies and the necessity of adopting scientific evidence-based optimization methods for use in research. In this process, evidence should be produced in a standard manner, and the advantages of TCM patterns should be accurately stated because these factors contribute to efficient transformation and proper verification of the obtained evidence. Additionally, focusing on patient-oriented medicine and doctor–patient relationships is also essential. These methods are of great significance to prove the clinical efficacy of TCM and promote its development.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate the relevance of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and metabolic scores to the occurrence, progression and prognosis of metastatic prostate cancer (mPCA), assessing the definition of the variables of metabolic syndrome, and the potential mechanisms of MetS and mPCA.MethodsData were obtained from the database of prostate cancer follow-up at the Urology Centre of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University (N=1303). Objectives: To quantify the integrated levels of ACE2 and TMPRSS2, the two well-recognized severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) entry-related genes, and to further identify key factors contributing to SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC). Methods: We developed a metric of the potential for tissue infected with SARS-CoV-2 (“TPSI”) based on ACE2 and TMPRSS2 transcript levels and compared TPSI levels between tumor and matched normal tissues across 11 tumor types. For further analysis of HNSC, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), functional analysis, and single sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) were conducted to investigate TPSI-relevant biological processes and their relationship with the immune landscape. TPSI-related factors were identified from clinical and mutational domains, followed by lasso regression to determine their relative effects on TPSI levels. Results: TPSI levels in tumors were generally lower than in the normal tissues. In HNSC, the genes highly associated with TPSI were enriched in viral entry-related processes, and TPSI levels were positively correlated with both eosinophils and T helper 17 (Th17) cell infiltration. Furthermore, the site of onset, human papillomaviruses (HPV) status, and nuclear receptor binding SET domain protein 1 (NSD1) mutations were identified as the most important factors shaping TPSI levels. Conclusions: This study identified the infection risk of SARS-CoV-2 between tumor and normal tissues, and provided evidence for the risk stratification of HNSC.

BackgroundPostoperative symptoms, bowel dysfunction and recurrence are common problems after resection of colorectal polyps. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Bifidobacterium in the postoperative patients.MethodsIn this single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, adults (≥ 18 years) undergoing endoscopic resection of colorectal polyps were treated with probiotics (Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis MH-02, 2 × 109 colony-forming units per packet) or placebo once daily for 7 days. The primary clinical endpoint was a reduction in the mean total postoperative symptoms score within 7 days postoperatively. Secondary clinical endpoints were the single symptom scores, time to recovery of bowel function, and changes in the intestinal microbiota. This study is registered with the number ChiCTR2100046687.ResultsA total of 100 individuals were included (48 in probiotic group and 52 in placebo group). No difference was seen in the mean scores between the two groups (0.29 vs. 0.43, P = 0.246). Colorectal polyps size (P = 0.008) and preoperative symptoms (P = 0.032) were influential factors for the primary endpoint. Besides, MH-02 alleviated difficult defecation (P = 0.045), and reduced the time to recovery of bowel function (P = 0.032). High-throughput analysis showed that MH-02 can help restore the diversity of intestinal microbiota, and increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium, Roseburia, Gemmiger, Blautia and Ruminococcus, while reduced the relative abundance of Clostridium at genus level (P < 0.05).ConclusionIn this prospective trial, MH-02 showed efficacy in patients with resection of colorectal polyps, particularly in the recovery of bowel function, and the changes in the intestinal microbiota may provide evidence for further exploration of the therapeutic mechanisms.

CoCrxFeMnNi (x represents the atomic percentage of Cr element, x = 20, 25, 30, and 35, denoted as Cr20, Cr25, Cr30, and Cr35 alloys) high-entropy alloy (HEA) coatings were cladded by plasma arc on the surface of 0Cr13Ni5Mo steel. The effects of Cr elements on the cavitation erosion mechanisms were studied by comparing the differences of microstructure, microhardness, cavitation erosion volume loss (CVL), cavitation erosion volume loss rate (CER), and eroded surface morphologies between the coatings. As the Cr content increased, the microhardness of the coatings increased continuously, and the microstructure transformed into fine dendrites. The microhardnesses of Cr20, Cr25, Cr30, and Cr35 were 223.9 HV, 250.5 HV, 265.2 HV, and 333.7 HV, respectively. With structural change, the slip pattern shifted from uniform distribution to distribution along the grain boundary, increasing slip resistance. Additionally, strain hardening capacity increased with reduced stacking fault energy (SFE). The resistance to cavitation erosion (CR) of the HEA increased with the increase in Cr content. The CVL of 20 h cavitation erosion of Cr35 coating was only 26.84% of that of 0Cr13Ni5Mo steel, and the peak CER was only 28.75% of that of 0Cr13Ni5Mo steel. The fracture damage mechanisms of the four HEA coatings were an obvious lamellar structure and fibrous fracture.

Carbendazim (CBZ), a systemic, broad-spectrum benzimidazole fungicide, is widely used to control fungal diseases in agricultural products. Its residues might pose risks to human health and the environment. Therefore, it is warranted to establish a rapid and reliable method for its residual quantification. Herein, we proposed a competitive assay that combined aptamer (DNA) specific recognition and bimetallic nanozyme gold@platinum (Au@Pt) catalysis to trace the CBZ residue. The DNA was labeled onto bimetallic nanozyme Au@Pt surface to produce Au@Pt probes (Au@Pt-DNA). The magnetic Fe3O4 was functionalized with a complementary strand of DNA (C-DNA) to form Fe3O4 probes (Fe3O4-C-DNA). Subsequently, the CBZ and the Fe3O4 probes competitively react with Au@Pt probes to form two Au@Pt-DNA biosensors (Au@Pt-ssDNA-CBZ and Au@Pt-dsDNA-Fe3O4). The Au@Pt-ssDNA-CBZ biosensor was designed for qualitative analysis through a naked-eye visualization strategy in the presence of CBZ. Meanwhile, Au@Pt-dsDNA-Fe3O4 biosensor was developed to quantitatively analyze CBZ using a multifunctional microplate reader. A competitive assay based on the dual-mode Au@Pt-DNA biosensors was established for onsite sensitive determination of CBZ. The limit of detection (LOD) and recoveries of the developed assay were 0.038 ng/mg and 71.88-110.11%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging between 3.15 and 10.91%. The assay demonstrated a good correlation with data acquired from liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry analysis. In summary, the proposed competitive assay based on dual-mode Au@Pt-DNA biosensors might have a great potential for onsite sensitive detection of pesticides in agro-products.

Astrocytes play an important role in the central nervous system (CNS). Ion channels in these cells not only function in ion transport, and maintain water/ion metabolism homeostasis, but also participate in physiological processes of neurons and glial cells by regulating signaling pathways. Increasing evidence indicates the ion channel proteins of astrocytes, such as aquaporins (AQPs), transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-sensitive potassium (K-ATP) channels, and P2X7 receptors (P2X7R), are strongly associated with oxidative stress, neuroinflammation and characteristic proteins in neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), Huntington’s disease (HD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Since ion channel protein dysfunction is a significant pathological feature of astrocytes in neurodegenerative diseases, we discuss these critical proteins and their signaling pathways in order to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms, which may yield new therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative disorders.

The demand for Chinese chives is growing as they are also rich in vitamins, fiber, and sulfur nutrients. Chinese chives should be sprayed with imidacloprid to control pests and diseases to safeguard their yield and to meet the demands of East Asian consumers for Chinese chives. Overspraying of imidacloprid can lead to residues in Chinese chives, posing a severe risk to human health. To reduce the harmful effects of imidacloprid residues on humans, we investigated the imidacloprid dissipation pattern and the final residue on Chinese chives using the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Good linearity (R2= 0.9988), accuracy (expressed as recovery % of 78.34–91.17%), precision [expressed as relative SDs (RSDs) of 0.48–6.43%], and sensitivity [a limit of quantification (LOQ) ≤ 8.07 × 104 mg/kg] were achieved. The dissipation dynamics were consistent with the first-order kinetics, with a half-life of 2.92 days. The final residual levels on Chinese chives were 0.00923–0.166 mg/kg, which is lower than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) of 1 mg/kg for imidacloprid on Chinese chives. A risk assessment index of

This study aimed to identify biomarkers for pork quality evaluation. Firstly, the correlation between indicators of pork quality evaluation was investigated. The pH of pork meat at 45 min post slaughter showed a significant negative correlation with meat color indicators (r: −0.4868–−0.3040). Subsequently, porcine plasma samples were further divided into low pH (pH = 6.16 ± 0.22) or high pH (pH = 6.75 ± 0.08) groups. Plasma metabolites in both sample groups were investigated using untargeted metabolomics. In total, 90 metabolites were recognized as differential metabolites using partial least squares discriminant analysis. Pathway enrichment analysis indicated these differential metabolites were enriched in amino acid metabolism and energy metabolism. Correlation analysis revealed that creatinine, L-carnitine, D-sphingosine, citraconic acid, and other metabolites may constitute novel plasma biomarkers with the pH value of pork meat. The current study provides important insights into plasma biomarkers for predicting pork quality based on pH value.

Wildlife shares grazing areas with herders in the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and humans can be infected by zoonotic nematodes through direct contact with animals or contaminated water. In this study, fecal samples (n = 296) from wild carnivores were collected to explore the infection rate and molecular genetic characteristics of nematodes by stratified random sampling in the survey areas. Host species and the nematodes they carried were then identified using 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA gene sequencing, respectively. Statistical analysis, neutrality tests, genetic diversity analysis and Bayesian inferred trees were performed to complete the study. In total, 10 species of nematodes were detected in 240 feces from six species of carnivores identified (including dominant Vulpes ferrilata and Vulpes vulpes), namely Uncinaria stenocephala, Toxascaris sp., Crenosoma vulpis, Parapharyngodon bainae, Oesophagostomum muntiacum, Aspiculuris tetraptera, Mastophorus muris, Nematodirus spathiger, Muellerius capillaris, and Molineus patens. Among these nematodes, U. stenocephala (35.83%, 86/240) and Toxascaris sp. (14.58%, 35/240) were detected at higher rates than the other nematodes (χ2 = 516.909, p < 0.05). Of 17 and 18 haplotypes were found based on the ITS1 gene for U. stenocephala and nad1 gene for Toxascaris sp., respectively. For the first time, using molecular methods, we report the infection of V. ferrilata by U. stenocephala, a potential zoonotic parasite, and suggest Toxascaris sp. may be a newly discovered nematode that lives within the fox intestine.

Dwarf habit is one of the most important traits in crop plant architecture, as it can increase plant density and improved land utilization, especially for protected cultivation, as well as increasing lodging resistance and economic yield. At least four dwarf genes have been identified in watermelon, but none of them has been cloned. In the current study, the Cldw-1 gene was primary-mapped onto watermelon chromosome 9 by next-generation sequencing-aided bulked-segregant analysis (BSA-seq) of F2 plants derived from a cross between a normal-height line, WT4, and a dwarf line, WM102, in watermelon. The candidate region identified by BSA-seq was subsequently validated and confirmed by linkage analysis using 30 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers in an F2 population of 124 plants. The Cldw-1 gene was further fine-mapped by chromosome walking in a large F2 population of 1,053 plants and was delimited into a candidate region of 107.00 kb. Six genes were predicted to be in the candidate region, and only one gene, Cla010337, was identified to have two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and a single nucleotide deletion in the exons in the dwarf line, WM102. A derived cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (dCAPS) marker was developed from the single nucleotide deletion, co-segregated with the dwarf trait in both the F2 population and a germplasm collection of 165 accessions. Cla010337 encoded an ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABC transporter) protein, and the expression levels of Cla010337 were significantly reduced in all the tissues tested in the dwarf line, WM102. The results of this study will be useful in achieving a better understanding of the molecular mechanism of the dwarf plant trait in watermelon and for the development of marker-assisted selection (MAS) for new dwarf cultivars.

The fouling behavior of a steam generator (SG) tube was investigated at different positions after 500 h of immersion in high-temperature water. A triple-layer structure of fouling appeared at both the crevice position and the free span position, namely, the large, dispersedly distributed deposition layer on the top; the small and faceted outer layer; and the relatively continuous inner layer. There was no obvious positional effect on the thickness of the inner layer. However, in the crevice position, the density of the deposited particle and the thickness of the outer layer was much higher than those of the free span position. The tube support plate (TSP) made of 410 stainless steel contributed significantly to the fouling behavior of the SG tube in the crevice between the SG tube and the TSP.

Roots provide anchorage and enable the absorption of water and micronutrients from the soil for plants. Besides these essential functions, roots are increasingly being recognized as an important organ for the production of diverse secondary metabolites. The goal of this study was to investigate the chemical composition and function of terpenoid secondary metabolites in roots of different cultivars of the popular ornamental plant Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. Although C. morifolium is known for rich production of secondary metabolites in its flower heads and leaves, the diversity of secondary metabolites in roots remains poorly characterized. In this study, 12 cultivars of C. morifolium were selected for comparative analysis. From their roots, a total of 20 terpenoids were detected, including four monoterpenes, 15 sesquiterpenes, and one diterpene. The cultivar ‘She Yang Hong Xin Ju’ exhibited the highest concentration of total terpenoids at approximately 730 µg·g−1 fresh weight. Most cultivars contained sesquiterpenes as the predominant terpenoids. Of them, (E)-β-farnesene was detected in all cultivars. Based on their terpenoid composition, the 12 cultivars were planed into four groups. To gain insights into the function of root secondary metabolites, we performed bioassays to assess their effects on growth of three species of pathogenic fungi: Fusarium oxysporum, Magnaporthe oryzae, and Verticillium dahliae. Significant variability in antifungal activity of the root extracts among different cultivars were observed. The cultivar ‘Xiao Huang Ju’ was the only cultivar that had significant inhibitory effects on all three species of fungi. Our study reveals the diversity of terpenoids in roots of C. morifolium and their function as a chemical defense against fungi.
