Objective: Voluntary medical male circumcision (MC) is a critical tool in combination HIV prevention programmes in Africa. Self-reported MC (SrMC) status is used in HIV epidemiological surveys to assess MC coverage but is subject to response bias with limited validation. This study evaluated the utility of SrMC status as a marker of MC as well as self-reported genital lesions for genital ulcer disease (GUD) among Ugandan men., Methods: Male participants aged 18-49 years in the cross-sectional Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevalence study, conducted between May and October 2019, responded to a questionnaire capturing SrMC status and current genital ulcer symptoms followed by clinical assessment to verify MC and presence of GUD.Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and corresponding CIs (95% CI) for SrMC status and GUD were estimated., Results: There were 853 male participants, of whom 470 (55.1%) self-reported being circumcised and 23 (2.7%) self-reported GUD (SrGUD). MC was clinically confirmed in 50.2% (n=428) of participants with sensitivity of SrMC status at 99% (95% CI: 98% to 100%) and specificity 89% (95% CI: 86% to 92%). Specificity of SrMC was lowest among persons living with HIV and viremic (>1000 copies/mL) at 72% (95% CI: 46% to 90%). 18 participants had clinically confirmed GUD, but only 12 SrGUD symptoms, corresponding to a sensitivity and specificity of 67% (95% CI: 41% to 87%) and 99% (95% CI: 98% to 99%), respectively., Conclusions: SrMC status is a robust proxy for clinically confirmed MC status and may reliably be used to assess MC coverage in this setting. Objectives: Migration is associated with increased risk of HIV infection in Africa, but evidence about non-HIV sexually transmitted infection (STI) burden among African migrants is limited., Methods: We used data from the Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevalence Study, a cross-sectional population-based study of chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, syphilis and herpes simplex virus type 2 prevalence in southern Uganda, to compare STI prevalence between adults aged 18 and 49 years with and without a recent history of migration. Migration status was determined using household census data, with a recent migration history defined as having moved into one's community of current residence within the last ~18 months. Unadjusted and adjusted modified Poisson regression models were used to compare individual STI prevalence risk by recent migration status with associations reported as adjusted prevalence risk ratios (adjPRRs) with 95% CIs. Adjusted models included participants' sex, age, community type, education, occupation and marital status., Results: Among 1825 participants, 358 (19.6%) had a recent migration history. Overall, migrants exhibited a significantly higher combined prevalence of curable STIs (gonorrhoea, chlamydia, high-titre syphilis (rapid plasma regain ≥1:8) and trichomoniasis) as compared with long-term residents (34.4% vs 24.2%; adjPRR=1.23; 95% CI 1.03 to 1.47). Significant differences in curable STI prevalence by migration status were concentrated among persons living with HIV (49.4% prevalence in migrants vs 32.6% in long-term residents; adjPRR=1.42; 95% CI 1.10 to 1.85) and among women (38.8% in migrants vs 27.8% in long-term residents; adjPRR=1.26; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.58). High-titre syphilis prevalence was especially elevated among male migrants (11.2% in migrants vs 4.9% in long-term residents; adjPRR=1.82; 95% CI 1.06 to 3.13)., Conclusions: The prevalence of non-HIV STIs is higher among migrants. Introduction: Women engaged in sex work (WESW) have an elevated risk of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STI). Estimates are three times higher than the general population. Understanding the predictors of HIV and STI among WESW is crucial in developing more focused HIV and STI prevention interventions among this population. The study examined the prevalence and predictors of HIV and STI among WESW in the Southern part of Uganda., Methodology: Baseline data from the Kyaterekera study involving 542 WESW (ages 18-55) recruited from 19 HIV hotspots in the greater Masaka region in Uganda was utilized. HIV and STI prevalence was estimated using blood and vaginal fluid samples bioassay. Hierarchical regression models were used to determine the predictors of HIV and STI among WESW., Results: Of the total sample, 41% (n = 220) were found to be HIV positive; and 10.5% (n = 57) tested positive for at least one of the three STI (Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis and Trichomonas vaginalis) regardless of their HIV status. Older age (b = 0.09, 95%CI = 0.06, 0.13, p≤0.001), lower levels of education (b = -0.79, 95%CI = -1.46, -0.11, p≤0.05), fewer numbers of children in the household (b = -0.18, 95%CI = -0.36, -0.01), p≤0.05), location (i.e., fishing village (b = 0.51, 95%CI = 0.16, 0.85, p≤0.01) or small town (b = -0.60, 95%CI = -0.92, -0.28, p≤0.001)), drug use (b = 0.58, 95%CI = 0.076, 1.08, p≤0.05) and financial self-efficacy (b = 0.05, 95%CI = -0.10, 0.00, p≤0.05), were associated with the risk of HIV infections among WESW. Domestic violence attitudes (b = -0.24, 95%CI = -0.42, -0.07, p≤0.01) and financial distress (b = -0.07, 95%CI = -0.14, -0.004, p≤0.05) were associated with the risk of STI infection among WESW., Conclusion: Study findings show a high prevalence of HIV among WESW compared to the general women population. Individual and family level, behavioural and economic factors were associated with increased HIV and STI infection among WESW. Voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) and HIV care (HIVC) can be an opportunity for reproductive health messages and services integration. The objective of this study is to assess the association between uptake of HIV-related services and use of modern contraception among reproductive-age women. Data are derived from community cohort data, where HIV+ respondents were referred to the Rakai Health Sciences program's HIVC clinic. Use of modern contraceptive and VCT receipt were by self-report. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate relative risk ratios (RRR) of contraception use by HIVC and VCT. Receipt of VCT was significantly associated with higher use of condoms for FP, adj.RRR 1.78 (1.07, 2.95), and other modern contraceptives, adj.RRR = 1.56(1.15, 2.11). Increasing level of HIVC was associated with decreasing level of unmet need for contraception. Use of condoms for family planning is common among HIV-related services attendees. Utilization of other modern contraceptive methods needs to be increased.
