The Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC; 5.97–5.33 Ma) is an enigmatic episode of paleoceanographic change, when kilometer-thick evaporite units were deposited in the Mediterranean basin. Here we use geochemical (biomarker and isotope) data to reconstruct sea surface temperature, salinity, and productivity-preservation changes in the Mediterranean basin just before the MSC. The proxy data indicate that the Mediterranean Sea was significantly saltier and colder between 6.415 and 6.151 Ma, than between 6.151 and 5.971 Ma. Salinity decrease at 6.151 Ma seems to be a relatively fast event just preceding the inception of a warming phase that lasted almost uninterrupted until the MSC onset. The water exchange with the Paratethys could have caused, along with the African rivers, an increased freshwater supply, resulting in normal marine Mediterranean waters between 6.151 and 5.971 Ma, despite the severe restriction of marine connections with the Atlantic at that time. Sea surface temperature changes determined a sharp drop in productivity and/or preservation of organic matter, marked by deposition of calcareous marls. Productivity and preservation were relatively high and constant until 6.01 Ma. Afterward, increased influx of terrestrial organic matter and probably enhanced water column stratification prevailed. Environmental change significantly affects the production of fish resources and their dependent societies. The paleontological record offers unique insight into the effects of long-term paleoenvironmental variability on the fish species’ distributions and abundances. In the present study, we investigate the late Miocene (7.5–6.5 Ma) fish assemblages of the Potamida section in western Crete (eastern Mediterranean). The determined fish taxa are examined in a paleobiogeographic context, with regard to their geographic and stratigraphic distribution from the early Miocene (~13 Ma) through today. In addition, present-day ecological data are used to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions in the study area. Planktonic foraminifer biostratigraphy significantly improves the earlier dating of the studied sequence. The late Miocene fish fauna of Potamida includes 35 taxa (seven in open nomenclature) from 13 teleost families. The eastern Mediterranean biostratigraphic and geographic distribution of 32 taxa is significantly expanded into the Tortonian, whereas 13 species are recorded for the first time from the Messinian. Four stages are distinguished in the area’s paleoenvironmental evolution. (1) The Potamida area was an open marine environment with depths exceeding 150 m between ~7.5–7.45 Ma. (2) Between 7.45–7.36 Ma, the results suggest depths between 300–400 m. (3) The depositional depth increases between 7.36–7.28 Ma to 400–550 m. This integrated study (field observations, micropalaeontology, magnetostratigraphy, geochemistry, borehole data and seismic profiles) of the Messinian–Zanclean deposits on Zakynthos Island (Ionian Sea) focuses on the sedimentary succession recording the pre-evaporitic phase of the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC) through the re-establishment of the marine conditions in a transitional area between the eastern and the western Mediterranean. Two intervals are distinguished through the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the pre-evaporitic Messinian in Kalamaki: (a) 6.45–6.122 Ma and (b) 6.122–5.97 Ma. Both the planktonic foraminifer and the fish assemblages indicate a cooling phase punctuated by hypersalinity episodes at around 6.05 Ma. Two evaporite units are recognized and associated with the tectonic evolution of the Kalamaki–Argassi area. One of the most enigmatic features of long-term Cenozoic climatic evolution, with some analog potential for present/future global climate change, is the last sustained warm and high-atmospheric CO2 interval in Earth's history, which started after the end of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (5.971–5.332 Ma) in the Mediterranean Sea. We present high-resolution, astronomically-tuned climate (Mg/Ca, δ18O) and productivity (Ba/Ca, δ13C) proxy records from the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides obliquus in the Kalamaki section (Zakynthos Island, Greece), which sheds new light on the early Pliocene Mediterranean hydrographic dynamics, and the associated climatic transition from 5.33 to 5.11 Ma. We recognized four distinct climatic phases with variable amplitude changes: (1) very warm climate interval prior to 5.28 Ma characterized by minimum ice volume, large salinity fluctuations, enhanced productivity, and intense river runoff, (2) stable paleoceanographic conditions from 5.28 to 5.23 Ma, which reflect a relatively warm and mesotrophic to eutrophic open-marine environment with improved ventilation, (3) a brief interval (20 ky) characterized by the most pronounced ice growth and intense cooling (∼ 5 °C) coupled with the abrupt decrease of ventilation and primary productivity, and (4) reinstatement of relatively stable conditions (warm and well-ventilated mesotrophic upper water column) in conjunction with relatively stable sea-level after 5.21 Ma. Overall, the succession of these phases provides an explanation for the more variable Mediterranean climate and stronger hydrographic variability with respect to other regions during the early Pliocene. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

The Early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (ca 183 Ma) coincides with high palaeotemperatures, regional anoxia to euxinia, marine transgression, mass extinction and high rates of organic-carbon burial in a global context. Most of the detailed studies of this event have investigated deposits formed in the epicontinental seas of northern Europe, although coeval organic-rich shales are known locally in the Tethyan region. However, the global or regional character of this event is still under debate. In this study we present, for the first time, a high-resolution geochemical record of the Early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic event in pelagic sediments (Kastelli Pelites) formed in a long-lived Mesozoic deep-sea basin, corresponding to the western passive margin of the Pindos Ocean of western Greece. Our data record both the positive excursion in total organic carbon (TOC) and the characteristic negative excursion in δ13Ccarb. The δ13Ccarb values are very stable in the bottom of the section (~2‰), whereas higher in the section the values drop down to ~ -5‰. Following this negative excursion, the carbonate carbon-isotope ratios return to background values. The TOC excursion is modest, rising from a background of 0.05% to ~ 2% and then returning to a background of 0.04%. Because both relative enrichment in TOC and the negative carbon-isotope excursion that characterize the Toarcian OAE are recorded in some of the deepest marine sediments of the Tethyan region, the global significance of the event is reinforced.

The Early Jurassic was characterized by a global disturbance of the carbon cycle known as the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE). This event is recorded worldwide by a negative excursion in marine and terrestrial carbon-isotope ratios, typically interrupting an overarching positive trend attributed to large-scale burial of marine organic matter under oxygen-depleted conditions. The negative excursion is attributed to introduction of isotopically light carbon into the ocean-atmosphere system. Three sections from the Ionian Zone in Greece have been analysed in terms of biostratigraphy, Total Organic Carbon (TOC), CaCO3, δ13Ccarb, δ18Ocarb and δ13Corg. On the basis of bio- and chemostratigraphy, the age of Pliensbachian-Toarcian formations from the Ionian Zone in Greece has been refined and the geochemical signature of the T-OAE recognized. All sections illustrate the characteristic negative excursion in carbon isotopes from both carbonates and organic matter and, in only one locality, a positive excursion has also been recorded. The recognition of the T-OAE in this part of the Tethyan continental margin offers additional information on the global impact and amplitude of this important Jurassic palaeoceanographic event. © 2013.

The Early Toarcian (Early Jurassic, c. 183 Ma) was characterized by an Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE), primarily identified by the presence of globally distributed approximately coeval black organic-rich shales. This event corresponded with relatively high marine temperatures, mass extinction, and both positive and negative carbon-isotope excursions. Because most studies of the T-OAE have taken place in northern European and Tethyan palaeogeographic domains, there is considerable controversy as to the regional or global character of this event. Here, we present the first high-resolution integrated chemostratigraphic (carbonate, organic carbon, δ13 C carb, δ13Corg) and biostratigraphic (calcareous nannofossil) records from the Kastelli Pelites cropping out in the Pindos Zone, western Greece. During the Mesozoic, the Pindos Zone was a deep-sea oceanmargin basin, which formed in mid-Triassic times along the northeast passive margin of Apulia. In two sections through the Kastelli Pelites, the chemostratigraphic and biostratigraphic (nannofossil) signatures of the most organic-rich facies are identified as correlative with the Lower Toarcian, tenuicostatum/polymorphum-falciferum/serpentinum/levisoni ammonite zones, indicating that these sediments record the T-OAE. Both sections also display the characteristic negative carbon-isotope excursion in organic matter and carbonate. This occurrence reinforces the global significance of the Early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event. © 2010 Cambridge University Press.

Two records of seawater sulfate isotope composition from the Early Jurassic demonstrate that large isotopic gradients existed between the European epicontinental sea and the open Tethys Ocean. These differences can be explained by the modification of open-ocean sulfate isotopic compositions by water-mass isolation, sea-level rise, and the effects of changing regional weathering and pyrite burial fluxes, during a time of rapid environmental change. Both records contain large positive isotopic excursions. In the section from Europe (Yorkshire, UK), a 6‰ excursion begins in the early exaratum subzone of the Toarcian in the middle of the organic-rich shale representing a well-known oceanic anoxic event. An open Tethyan margin record from Tibet records a much larger 19‰ excursion, but the section is less well dated. Two age interpretations are possible: sparse biostratigraphic evidence places this excursion in the Aalenian, but we suggest that it may correlate with the positive excursion in Yorkshire. Hence these records may document both a Toarcian event and an Aalenian sulfur isotope event, or the early Toarcian anoxic event alone. Conservative estimates of the rate of isotopic change with time based on the Tibetan section suggest that Early Jurassic seawater sulfate concentrations were between 1 and 5 mM, much lower than previously thought. © 2011 Geological Society of America.
