Search

Topological materials are of great interest because they can support metallic edge or surface states that are robust against perturbations, with the potential for technological applications. Here we experimentally explore the light-induced non-equilibrium properties of two distinct topological phases in NaCd4As3: a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) phase and a topological insulator (TI) phase. This material has surface states that are protected by mirror symmetry in the TCI phase at room temperature, while it undergoes a structural phase transition to a TI phase below 200 K. After exciting the TI phase by an ultrafast laser pulse, we observe a leading band edge shift of >150 meV, that slowly builds up and reaches a maximum after ~0.6 ps, and that persists for ~8 ps. The slow rise time of the excited electron population and electron temperature suggests that the electronic and structural orders are strongly coupled in this TI phase. It also suggests that the directly excited electronic states and the probed electronic states are weakly coupled. Both couplings are likely due to a partial relaxation of the lattice distortion, which is known to be associated with the TI phase. In contrast, no distinct excited state is observed in the TCI phase immediately or after photoexcitation, which we attribute to the low density of states and phase space available near the Fermi level. Using data from the GALAH survey, we explore the dependence of elemental abundances on stellar age and metallicity among Galactic disc stars. We find that the abundance of most elements can be predicted from age and [Fe/H] with an intrinsic scatter of about 0.03 dex. We discuss the possible causes for the existence of the abundance-age-metallicity relations. Using a stochastic chemical enrichment scheme based on the size of Supernovae remnants, we show the intrinsic scatter is expected to be small, about 0.05 dex or even smaller if there is additional mixing in the ISM. Elemental abundances show trends with both age and metallicity and the relationship is well described by a simple model in which the dependence of abundance ([X/Fe]) on age and [Fe/H] are additively separable. Elements can be grouped based on the direction of their abundance gradient in the (age,[Fe/H]) plane and different groups can be roughly associated with three distinct nucleosynthetic production sites, the exploding massive stars, the exploding white dwarfs and the AGB stars. However, the abundances of some elements, like Co, La, and Li, show large scatter for a given age and metallicity, suggesting processes other than simple Galactic chemical evolution are at play. We also compare the abundance trends of main-sequence turn-off stars against that of giants, whose ages were estimated using asteroseismic information from the K2 mission. For most elements, the trends of main-sequence turn-off stars are similar to that of giants. Charge density wave (CDW) order is an emergent quantum phase that is characterized by a periodic lattice distortion and charge density modulation, often present near superconducting transitions. Here we uncover a novel inverted CDW state by using a femtosecond laser to coherently over-drive the unique star-of-David lattice distortion in 1T-TaSe$_2$. We track the signature of this novel CDW state using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory, and validate that it is associated with a unique lattice and charge arrangement never before realized. The dynamic electronic structure further reveals its novel properties, that are characterized by an increased density of states near the Fermi level, high metallicity, and altered electron-phonon couplings. The ensemble of chemical element abundance measurements for stars, along with precision distances and orbit properties, provides high-dimensional data to study the evolution of the Milky Way. With this third data release of the Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey, we publish 678 423 spectra for 588 571 mostly nearby stars (81.2% of stars are within <2 kpc), observed with the HERMES spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This release (hereafter GALAH+ DR3) includes all observations from GALAH Phase 1 (bright, main, and faint survey, 70%), K2-HERMES (17%), TESS-HERMES (5%), and a subset of ancillary observations (8%) including the bulge and >75 stellar clusters. We derive stellar parameters $T_\text{eff}$, $\log g$, [Fe/H], $v_\text{mic}$, $v_\text{broad}$ & $v_\text{rad}$ using our modified version of the spectrum synthesis code Spectroscopy Made Easy (SME) and 1D MARCS model atmospheres. We break spectroscopic degeneracies in our spectrum analysis with astrometry from $Gaia$ DR2 and photometry from 2MASS. We report abundance ratios [X/Fe] for 30 different elements (11 of which are based on non-LTE computations) covering five nucleosynthetic pathways. We describe validations for accuracy and precision, flagging of peculiar stars/measurements and recommendations for using our results. Our catalogue comprises 65% dwarfs, 34% giants, and 1% other/unclassified stars. Based on unflagged chemical composition and age, we find 62% young low-$\alpha$, 9% young high-$\alpha$, 27% old high-$\alpha$, and 2% stars with $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} \leq -1$. Based on kinematics, 4% are halo stars. We explore the fundamental relations governing the radial and vertical velocity dispersions of stars in the Milky Way, from combined studies of complementary surveys including GALAH, LAMOST, APOGEE, the NASA $Kepler$ and K2 missions, and $Gaia$ DR2. We find that different stellar samples, even though they target different tracer populations and employ a variety of age estimation techniques, follow the same set of fundamental relations. We provide the clearest evidence to date that, in addition to the well-known dependence on stellar age, the velocity dispersions of stars depend on orbital angular momentum $L_z$, metallicity and height above the plane $|z|$, and are well described by a multiplicatively separable functional form. The dispersions have a power-law dependence on age with exponents of 0.441$\pm 0.007$ and 0.251$\pm 0.006$ for $\sigma_z$ and $\sigma_R$ respectively, and the power law is valid even for the oldest stars. For the solar neighborhood stars, the apparent break in the power law for older stars, as seen in previous studies, is due to the anti-correlation of $L_z$ with age. The dispersions decrease with increasing $L_z$ until we reach the Sun's orbital angular momentum, after which $\sigma_z$ increases (implying flaring in the outer disc) while $\sigma_R$ flattens. The dispersions increase with decreasing metallicity, suggesting that the dispersions increase with birth radius. The dispersions also increase linearly with $|z|$. The same set of relations that work in the solar neighborhood also work for stars between $3

Asteroseismology is a promising tool to study Galactic structure and evolution because it can probe the ages of stars. Earlier attempts comparing seismic data from the {\it Kepler} satellite with predictions from Galaxy models found that the models predicted more low-mass stars compared to the observed distribution of masses. It was unclear if the mismatch was due to inaccuracies in the Galactic models, or the unknown aspects of the selection function of the stars. Using new data from the K2 mission, which has a well-defined selection function, we find that an old metal-poor thick disc, as used in previous Galactic models, is incompatible with the asteroseismic information. We show that spectroscopic measurements of [Fe/H] and [$\alpha$/Fe] elemental abundances from the GALAH survey indicate a mean metallicity of $\log (Z/Z_{\odot})=-0.16$ for the thick disc. Here $Z$ is the effective solar-scaled metallicity, which is a function of [Fe/H] and [$\alpha$/Fe]. With the revised disc metallicities, for the first time, the theoretically predicted distribution of seismic masses show excellent agreement with the observed distribution of masses. This provides an indirect verification of the asteroseismic mass scaling relation is good to within five percent. Using an importance-sampling framework that takes the selection function into account, we fit a population synthesis model of the Galaxy to the observed seismic and spectroscopic data. Assuming the asteroseismic scaling relations are correct, we estimate the mean age of the thick disc to be about 10 Gyr, in agreement with the traditional idea of an old $\alpha$-enhanced thick disc., Comment: 21 pages, submitted to MNRAS

The stars within our Galactic halo presents a snapshot of its ongoing growth and evolution, probing galaxy formation directly. Here, we present our first analysis of the stellar halo from detailed maps of Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) stars drawn from the SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey. To isolate candidate BHB stars from the overall population, we develop a machine-learning approach through the application of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN), resulting in a relatively pure sample of target stars. From this, we derive the absolute $u$ magnitude for the BHB sample to be $\sim2\ mag$, varying slightly with $(v-g)_0$ and $(u-v)_0$ colours. We examine the BHB number density distribution from 5272 candidate stars, deriving a double power-law with a break radius of $r_s = 11.8\pm0.3\ kpc$, and inner and outer slopes of $\alpha_{in} = -2.5\pm0.1$ and $\alpha_{out} = -4.5\pm0.3$ respectively. Through isochrone fitting of simulated BHB stars, we find a colour-age/metallicity correlation, with older/more metal-poor stars being bluer, and establish a parameter to indicate this age (or metallicity) variation. Using this, we construct the three-dimensional population distribution of BHB stars in the halo and identify significant substructure. Finally, in agreement with previous studies, we also identify a systemic age/metallicity shift spanning $\sim3\ kpc$ to $ \sim20\ kpc$ in galactocentric distance., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures. If the Galaxy is axisymmetric and in dynamical equilibrium, we expect negligible fluctuations in the residual line-of-sight velocity field. Recent results using the \apg{} survey find significant fluctuations in velocity for stars in the midplane ($|z|<$0.25 kpc) out to 5 kpc, suggesting that the dynamical influence of non-axisymmetric features i.e., the Milky Way's bar, spiral arms and merger events extends out to the Solar neighborhood. Their measured power spectrum has a characteristic amplitude of 11 \kms{} on a scale of 2.5 kpc. The existence of such large-scale streaming motions has important implications for determining the Sun's motion about the Galactic Centre. Using Red Clump stars from \glh{} and \apg{}, we map the line-of-sight velocities around the Sun (d$<$5 kpc), and $|z|<$1.25 kpc from the midplane. By subtracting a smooth axisymmetric model for the velocity field, we study the residual fluctuations and compare our findings with mock survey generated by \glx{}. We find negligible large-scale fluctuations away from the plane. In the mid-plane, we reproduce the earlier \apg{} power spectrum but with 20\% smaller amplitude (9.3 \kms{}) after taking into account a few systematics (e.g., volume completeness). Using a flexible axisymmetric model the power-amplitude is further reduced to 6.3 \kms{}. Additionally, our simulations show that, in the plane, distances are underestimated for high-mass Red Clump stars which can lead to spurious power-amplitude of about 5.2 \kms{}. Taking this into account, we estimate the amplitude of real fluctuations to be $<$4.6 \kms{}, about a factor of three less than the \apg{} result., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Open cluster members are coeval and share the same initial bulk chemical compositions. Consequently, differences in surface abundances between members of a cluster that are at different evolutionary stages can be used to study the effects of mixing and internal chemical processing. We carry out an abundance analysis of seven elements (Li, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Fe) in 66 stars belonging to the open cluster M67, based on high resolution GALAH spectra, 1D MARCS model atmospheres, and, for the first time for a large sample of M67 stars, non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer. From the non-LTE analysis, we find a typical star-to-star scatter in the abundance ratios of around 0.05 dex; this scatter is slightly but systematically larger when LTE is assumed instead. We find trends in the abundance ratios with effective temperature, indicating systematic differences in the surface abundances between turn-off and giant stars; these trends are more pronounced when LTE is assumed. However, in the non-LTE analysis, most of the element trends have been flattened. Two species are exceptions to this behaviour, namely Al and Si, which both clearly display remaining trends in the non-LTE analysis. GALAH is a large-scale magnitude-limited southern stellar spectroscopic survey. Its second data release (GALAH DR2) provides values of stellar parameters and abundances of 23 elements for 342,682 stars (Buder et al.). Here we add a description of the public release of radial velocities with a typical accuracy of 0.1 km/s for 336,215 of these stars, achievable due to the large wavelength coverage, high resolving power and good signal to noise ratio of the observed spectra, but also because convective motions in stellar atmosphere and gravitational redshift from the star to the observer are taken into account. In the process we derive medians of observed spectra which are nearly noiseless, as they are obtained from between 100 and 1116 observed spectra belonging to the same bin with a width of 50 K in temperature, 0.2 dex in gravity, and 0.1 dex in metallicity. Publicly released 1181 median spectra have a resolving power of 28,000 and trace the well-populated stellar types with metallicities between -0.6 and +0.3. Note that radial velocities from GALAH are an excellent match to the accuracy of velocity components along the sky plane derived by Gaia for the same stars. The level of accuracy achieved here is adequate for studies of dynamics within stellar clusters, associations and streams in the Galaxy. The Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey is a large-scale stellar spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way and designed to deliver chemical information complementary to a large number of stars covered by the $Gaia$ mission. We present the GALAH second public data release (GALAH DR2) containing 342,682 stars. For these stars, the GALAH collaboration provides stellar parameters and abundances for up to 23 elements to the community. Here we present the target selection, observation, data reduction and detailed explanation of how the spectra were analysed to estimate stellar parameters and element abundances. For the stellar analysis, we have used a multi-step approach. We use the physics-driven spectrum synthesis of Spectroscopy Made Easy (SME) to derive stellar labels ($T_\mathrm{eff}$, $\log g$, $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}$, $\mathrm{[X/Fe]}$, $v_\mathrm{mic}$, $v \sin i$, $A_{K_S}$) for a representative training set of stars. This information is then propagated to the whole survey with the data-driven method of $The~Cannon$. Special care has been exercised in the spectral synthesis to only consider spectral lines that have reliable atomic input data and are little affected by blending lines. Departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) are considered for several key elements, including Li, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, and Fe, using 1D MARCS stellar atmosphere models. Validation tests including repeat observations, Gaia benchmark stars, open and globular clusters, and K2 asteroseismic targets lend confidence in our methods and results. We report the serendipitous observations of 571 luminous supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds by the spectroscopic GALAH and TESS-HERMES surveys: 434 stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud and 137 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We also find one star that appears associated with structured star formation in the Magellanic Bridge. Both of these surveys are aimed at the local volume of the Galaxy but have simple, magnitude-limited selection functions that mean they include some observations of luminous extra-Galactic stars. The surveys determine stellar parameter and abundances using The Cannon, a data-driven generative modelling approach. In this work, we explore the results from The Cannon when it is fed the spectra of these intrinsically luminous supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds, which are well outside the normal bounds of The Cannon's training set. We find that, although the parameters are astrophysically incorrect, the $v\sin i$ and the abundances of lithium, barium, and magnesium are excellent discriminants of these stars. We present a study using the second data release of the GALAH survey of stellar parameters and elemental abundances of 15 pairs of stars identified by Oh et al 2017. They identified these pairs as potentially co-moving pairs using proper motions and parallaxes from Gaia DR1. We find that 11 very wide (>1.7 pc) pairs of stars do in fact have similar Galactic orbits, while a further four claimed co-moving pairs are not truly co-orbiting. Eight of the 11 co-orbiting pairs have reliable stellar parameters and abundances, and we find that three of those are quite similar in their abundance patterns, while five have significant [Fe/H] differences. For the latter, this indicates that they could be co-orbiting because of the general dynamical coldness of the thin disc, or perhaps resonances induced by the Galaxy, rather than a shared formation site. The overlap between the spectroscopic Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey & $Gaia$ provides a high-dimensional chemodynamical space of unprecedented size. We present a first analysis of a subset of this overlap, of 7066 dwarf, turn-off, & sub-giant stars. [...] We investigate correlations between chemical compositions, ages, & kinematics for this sample. Stellar parameters & elemental abundances are derived from the GALAH spectra with the spectral synthesis code SME. [...] We report Li, C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, as well as Ba & we note that we employ non-LTE calculations for Li, O, Al, & Fe. We show that the use of astrometric & photometric data improves the accuracy of the derived spectroscopic parameters, especially $\log g$. [...] we recover the result that stars of the high-$\alpha$ sequence are typically older than stars in the low-$\alpha$ sequence, the latter spanning $-0.7<$[Fe/H]$<+0.5$. While these two sequences become indistinguishable in [$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] at the metal-rich regime, we find that age can be used to separate stars from the extended high-$\alpha$ & the low-$\alpha$ sequence even in this regime. [...] we find that the old stars ($>8$ Gyr have lower angular momenta $L_z$ than the Sun, which implies that they are on eccentric orbits & originate from the inner disk. Contrary to some previous smaller scale studies we find a continuous evolution in the high-$\alpha$-sequence up to super-solar [Fe/H] rather than a gap, which has been interpreted as a separate "high-$\alpha$ metal-rich" population. Stars in our sample that are younger than 10 Gyr, are mainly found on the low $\alpha$-sequence & show a gradient in $L_z$ from low [Fe/H] ($L_z>L_{z,\odot}$) towards higher [Fe/H] ($L_z

We present a new scheme, $\it{galtag}$, for refining the photometric redshift measurements of faint galaxies by probabilistically tagging them to observed galaxy groups constructed from a brighter, magnitude-limited spectroscopy survey. First, this method is tested on the DESI light-cone data constructed on the GALFORM galaxy formation model to tests its validity. We then apply it to the photometric observations of galaxies in the Kilo-Degree Imaging Survey (KiDS) over a 1 deg$^2$ region centred at 15$^\mathrm{h}$. This region contains Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) deep spectroscopic observations (i-band<22) and an accompanying group catalogue to r-band<19.8. We demonstrate that even with some trade-off in sample size, an order of magnitude improvement on the accuracy of photometric redshifts is achievable when using $\it{galtag}$. This approach provides both refined photometric redshift measurements and group richness enhancement. In combination these products will hugely improve the scientific potential of both photometric and spectroscopic datasets. Using GALAH survey data of nearby stars, we look at how structure in the planar (u,v) velocity distribution depends on metallicity and on viewing direction within the Galaxy. In nearby stars, with distance d < 1 kpc, the Hercules stream is most strongly seen in higher metallicity stars [Fe/H] > 0.2. The Hercules stream peak v value depends on viewed galactic longitude, which we interpret as due to the gap between the stellar stream and more circular orbits being associated with a specific angular momentum value of about 1640 km/s kpc. The association of the gap with a particular angular momentum value supports a bar resonant model for the Hercules stream. Moving groups previously identified in Hipparcos observations are easiest to see in stars nearer than 250 pc, and their visibility and peak velocities in the velocity distributions depends on both viewing direction (galactic longitude and hemisphere) and metallicity. We infer that there is fine structure in local velocity distributions that varies over distances of a few hundred pc in the Galaxy., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

The spherical Jeans equation is a widely used tool for dynamical study of gravitating systems in astronomy. Here we test its efficacy in robustly weighing the mass of Milky Way analogues, given they need not be in equilibrium or even spherical. Utilizing Milky Way stellar halos simulated in accordance with $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ cosmology by Bullock and Johnston (2005) and analysing them under the Jeans formalism, we recover the underlying mass distribution of the parent galaxy, within distance $r/{\rm kpc}\in[10,100]$, with a bias of $\sim12\%$ and a dispersion of $\sim14\%$. Additionally, the mass profiles of triaxial dark matter halos taken from the SURFS simulation, within scaled radius $0.2

Our nearest large cosmological neighbour, the Andromeda galaxy (M31), is a dynamical system, and an accurate measurement of its total mass is central to our understanding of its assembly history, the life-cycles of its satellite galaxies, and its role in shaping the Local Group environment. Here, we apply a novel approach to determine the dynamical mass of M31 using high velocity Planetary Nebulae (PNe), establishing a hierarchical Bayesian model united with a scheme to capture potential outliers and marginalize over tracers unknown distances. With this, we derive the escape velocity run of M31 as a function of galacto-centric distance, with both parametric and non-parametric approaches. We determine the escape velocity of M31 to be $470\pm{40}$ km s$^{-1}$ at a galacto-centric distance of 15 kpc, and also, derive the total potential of M31, estimating the virial mass and radius of the galaxy to be $0.8\pm{0.1}\times10^{12}\,M_\odot$ and $240\pm{10}$ kpc, respectively. Our M31 mass is on the low-side of the measured range, this supports the lower expected mass of the M31-Milky Way system from the timing and momentum arguments, satisfying the HI constraint on circular velocity between $10\lesssim R/\textrm{kpc}<35$, and agreeing with the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation. To place these results in a broader context, we compare them to the key predictions of the $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ cosmological paradigm, including the stellar-mass-halo-mass and the dark matter halo concentration-virial mass correlation, and finding it to be an outlier to this relation., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Using data from the GALAH pilot survey, we determine properties of the Galactic thin and thick disks near the solar neighbourhood. The data cover a small range of Galactocentric radius ($7.9 \leq R_\mathrm{GC} \leq 9.5$ kpc), but extend up to 4 kpc in height from the Galactic plane, and several kpc in the direction of Galactic anti-rotation (at longitude $260 ^\circ \leq \ell \leq 280^\circ$). This allows us to reliably measure the vertical density and abundance profiles of the chemically and kinematically defined `thick' and `thin' disks of the Galaxy. The thin disk (low-$\alpha$ population) exhibits a steep negative vertical metallicity gradient, at d[M/H]/d$z=-0.18 \pm 0.01$ dex kpc$^{-1}$, which is broadly consistent with previous studies. In contrast, its vertical $\alpha$-abundance profile is almost flat, with a gradient of d[$\alpha$/M]/d$z$ = $0.008 \pm 0.002$ dex kpc$^{-1}$. The steep vertical metallicity gradient of the low-$\alpha$ population is in agreement with models where radial migration has a major role in the evolution of the thin disk. The thick disk (high-$\alpha$ population) has a weaker vertical metallicity gradient d[M/H]/d$z = -0.058 \pm 0.003$ dex kpc$^{-1}$. The $\alpha$-abundance of the thick disk is nearly constant with height, d[$\alpha$/M]/d$z$ = $0.007 \pm 0.002$ dex kpc$^{-1}$. The negative gradient in metallicity and the small gradient in [$\alpha$/M] indicate that the high-$\alpha$ population experienced a settling phase, but also formed prior to the onset of major SNIa enrichment. Accurate and precise radius estimates of transiting exoplanets are critical for understanding their compositions and formation mechanisms. To know the planet, we must know the host star in as much detail as possible. We present first results from the K2-HERMES project, which uses the HERMES multi-object spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope to obtain R$\sim$28,000 spectra of up to 360 stars in one exposure. This ongoing project aims to derive self-consistent spectroscopic parameters for about half of K2 target stars. We present complete stellar parameters and isochrone-derived masses and radii for 46 stars hosting 57 K2 candidate planets in Campaigns 1-3. Our revised host-star radii cast severe doubt on three candidate planets: EPIC\,201407812.01, EPIC\,203070421.01, and EPIC\,202843107.01, all of which now have inferred radii well in excess of the largest known inflated Jovian planets., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

We describe data release 3 (DR3) of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. The GAMA survey is a spectroscopic redshift and multi-wavelength photometric survey in three equatorial regions each of 60.0 deg^2 (G09, G12, G15), and two southern regions of 55.7 deg^2 (G02) and 50.6 deg^2 (G23). DR3 consists of: the first release of data covering the G02 region and of data on H-ATLAS sources in the equatorial regions; and updates to data on sources released in DR2. DR3 includes 154809 sources with secure redshifts across four regions. A subset of the G02 region is 95.5% redshift complete to r<19.8 over an area of 19.5 deg^2, with 20086 galaxy redshifts, that overlaps substantially with the XXL survey (X-ray) and VIPERS (redshift survey). In the equatorial regions, the main survey has even higher completeness (98.5%), and spectra for about 75% of H-ATLAS filler targets were also obtained. This filler sample extends spectroscopic redshifts, for probable optical counterparts to H-ATLAS sub-mm sources, to 0.8 mag deeper (r<20.6) than the GAMA main survey. There are 25814 galaxy redshifts for H-ATLAS sources from the GAMA main or filler surveys. The galaxy pairwise velocity dispersion (PVD) can provide important tests of non-standard gravity and galaxy formation models. We describe measurements of the PVD of galaxies in the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey as a function of projected separation and galaxy luminosity. Due to the faint magnitude limit ($r < 19.8$) and highly-complete spectroscopic sampling of the GAMA survey, we are able to reliably measure the PVD to smaller scales ($r_\bot = 0.01$ Mpc/h) than previous work. The measured PVD at projected separations $r_\bot <~ 1$ Mpc/h increases near-monotonically with increasing luminosity from $\sigma \approx 200$ km/s at $M_r = -17$ mag to $\sigma \approx 600$ km/s at $M_r \approx -22$ mag. Analysis of the Gonzalez-Perez (2014) GALFORM semi-analytic model yields no such trend of PVD with luminosity: the model over-predicts the PVD for faint galaxies. We use the energy-balance code MAGPHYS to determine stellar and dust masses, and dust corrected star-formation rates for over 200,000 GAMA galaxies, 170,000 G10-COSMOS galaxies and 200,000 3D-HST galaxies. Our values agree well with previously reported measurements and constitute a representative and homogeneous dataset spanning a broad range in stellar mass (10^8---10^12 Msol), dust mass (10^6---10^9 Msol), and star-formation rates (0.01---100 Msol per yr), and over a broad redshift range (0.0 < z < 5.0). We combine these data to measure the cosmic star-formation history (CSFH), the stellar-mass density (SMD), and the dust-mass density (DMD) over a 12 Gyr timeline. The data mostly agree with previous estimates, where they exist, and provide a quasi-homogeneous dataset using consistent mass and star-formation estimators with consistent underlying assumptions over the full time range. As a consequence our formal errors are significantly reduced when compared to the historic literature. Integrating our cosmic star-formation history we precisely reproduce the stellar-mass density with an ISM replenishment factor of 0.50 +/- 0.07, consistent with our choice of Chabrier IMF plus some modest amount of stripped stellar mass. Exploring the cosmic dust density evolution, we find a gradual increase in dust density with lookback time. We build a simple phenomenological model from the CSFH to account for the dust mass evolution, and infer two key conclusions: (1) For every unit of stellar mass which is formed 0.0065---0.004 units of dust mass is also formed; (2) Over the history of the Universe approximately 90 to 95 per cent of all dust formed has been destroyed and/or ejected., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The technique of chemical tagging uses the elemental abundances of stellar atmospheres to `reconstruct' chemically homogeneous star clusters that have long since dispersed. The GALAH spectroscopic survey --which aims to observe one million stars using the Anglo-Australian Telescope -- allows us to measure up to 30 elements or dimensions in the stellar chemical abundance space, many of which are not independent. How to find clustering reliably in a noisy high-dimensional space is a difficult problem that remains largely unsolved. Here we explore t-distributed stochastic neighbour embedding (t-SNE) -- which identifies an optimal mapping of a high-dimensional space into fewer dimensions -- whilst conserving the original clustering information. Typically, the projection is made to a 2D space to aid recognition of clusters by eye. We show that this method is a reliable tool for chemical tagging because it can: (i) resolve clustering in chemical space alone, (ii) recover known open and globular clusters with high efficiency and low contamination, and (iii) relate field stars to known clusters. t-SNE also provides a useful visualization of a high-dimensional space. We demonstrate the method on a dataset of 13 abundances measured in the spectra of 187,000 stars by the GALAH survey. We recover 7 of the 9 observed clusters (6 globular and 3 open clusters) in chemical space with minimal contamination from field stars and low numbers of outliers. With chemical tagging, we also identify two Pleiades supercluster members (which we confirm kinematically), one as far as 6$^\circ$ -- one tidal radius away from the cluster centre.

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will provide high precision time-series photometry for millions of stars with at least a half-hour cadence. Of particular interest are the circular regions of 12-degree radius centered around the ecliptic poles that will be observed continuously for a full year. Spectroscopic stellar parameters are desirable to characterize and select suitable targets for TESS, whether they are focused on exploring exoplanets, stellar astrophysics, or Galactic archaeology. Here, we present spectroscopic stellar parameters ($T_{\rm eff}$, $\log g$, [Fe/H], $v \sin i$, $v_{\rm micro}$) for about 16,000 dwarf and subgiant stars in TESS' southern continuous viewing zone. For almost all the stars, we also present Bayesian estimates of stellar properties including distance, extinction, mass, radius, and age using theoretical isochrones. Stellar surface gravity and radius are made available for an additional set of roughly 8,500 red giants. All our target stars are in the range $10

The first and second moments of stellar velocities encode important information about the formation history of the Galactic halo. However, due to the lack of tangential motion and inaccurate distances of the halo stars, the velocity moments in the Galactic halo have largely remained "known unknowns". Fortunately, our off-centric position within the Galaxy allows us to estimate these moments in the galacto-centric frame using the observed radial velocities of the stars alone. We use these velocities coupled with the Hierarchical Bayesian scheme, which allows easy marginalisation over the missing data (the proper-motion, and uncertainty-free distance and line-of-sight velocity), to measure the velocity dispersions, orbital anisotropy ($\beta$) and streaming motion ($v_{\rm rot}$) of the halo main-sequence turn-off (MSTO) and K-giant (KG) stars in the inner stellar halo (r $\lesssim 15$ kpc). We study the metallicity bias in kinematics of the halo stars and observe that the comparatively metal-rich ([Fe/H]$>-1.4$) and the metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\leq - 1.4$) MSTO samples show a clear systematic difference in $v_{\rm rot} \sim 20-40$ km s$^{-1}$, depending on how restrictive the spatial cuts to cull the disk contamination are. The bias is also detected in KG samples but with less certainty. Both MSTO and KG populations suggest that the inner stellar halo of the Galaxy is radially biased i.e. $\sigma_r>\sigma_\theta$ or $\sigma_\phi$ and $\beta \simeq 0.5$. The apparent metallicity contrariety in the rotation velocity among the halo sub-populations supports the co-existence of multiple populations in the galactic halo that may have formed through distinct formation scenarios, i.e. in-situ versus accretion., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the evolution of the Cosmic Spectral Energy Distribution (CSED) from $z = 1 - 0$. Our CSEDs originate from stacking individual spectral energy distribution fits based on panchromatic photometry from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) and COSMOS datasets in ten redshift intervals with completeness corrections applied. Below $z = 0.45$, we have credible SED fits from 100 nm to 1 mm. Due to the relatively low sensitivity of the far-infrared data, our far-infrared CSEDs contain a mix of predicted and measured fluxes above $z = 0.45$. Our results include appropriate errors to highlight the impact of these corrections. We show that the bolometric energy output of the Universe has declined by a factor of roughly four -- from $5.1 \pm 1.0$ at $z \sim 1$ to $1.3 \pm 0.3 \times 10^{35}~h_{70}$~W~Mpc$^{-3}$ at the current epoch. We show that this decrease is robust to cosmic variance, SED modelling and other various types of error. Our CSEDs are also consistent with an increase in the mean age of stellar populations. We also show that dust attenuation has decreased over the same period, with the photon escape fraction at 150~nm increasing from $16 \pm 3$ at $z \sim 1$ to $24 \pm 5$ per cent at the current epoch, equivalent to a decrease in $A_\mathrm{FUV}$ of 0.4~mag. Our CSEDs account for $68 \pm 12$ and $61 \pm 13$ per cent of the cosmic optical and infrared backgrounds respectively as defined from integrated galaxy counts and are consistent with previous estimates of the cosmic infrared background with redshift., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Dwarf galaxies, among the most dark matter dominated structures of our universe, are excellent test-beds for dark matter theories. Unfortunately, mass modelling of these systems suffers from the well documented mass-velocity anisotropy degeneracy. For the case of spherically symmetric systems, we describe a method for non-parametric modelling of the radial and tangential velocity moments. The method is a numerical velocity anisotropy "inversion", with parametric mass models, where the radial velocity dispersion profile, $\sigma_{\mathrm{rr}}^2$ is modeled as a B-spline, and the optimization is a three step process that consists of: (i) an Evolutionary modelling to determine the mass model form and the best B-spline basis to represent $\sigma_{\mathrm{rr}}^2$; (ii) an optimization of the smoothing parameters; (iii) a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis to determine the physical parameters. The mass-anisotropy degeneracy is reduced into mass model inference, irrespective of kinematics. We test our method using synthetic data. Our algorithm constructs the best kinematic profile and discriminates between competing dark matter models. We apply our method to the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Using a King brightness profile and testing various dark matter mass models, our model inference favours a simple mass-follows-light system. We find that the anisotropy profile of Fornax is tangential ($\beta(r) < 0$) and we estimate a total mass of $M_{\text{tot}} = 1.613 ^{+0.050}_{-0.075} \times 10^8 \, \text{M}_{\odot}$, and a mass-to-light ratio of $\Upsilon_V = 8.93 ^{+0.32}_{-0.47} \, (\text{M}_{\odot}/\text{L}_{\odot})$. We derive the low redshift galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF), inclusive of dust corrections, for the equatorial Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) dataset covering 180 deg$^2$. We construct the mass function using a density-corrected maximum volume method, using masses corrected for the impact of optically thick and thin dust. We explore the galactic bivariate brightness plane ($M_\star-\mu$), demonstrating that surface brightness effects do not systematically bias our mass function measurement above 10$^{7.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. The galaxy distribution in the $M-\mu$-plane appears well bounded, indicating that no substantial population of massive but diffuse or highly compact galaxies are systematically missed due to the GAMA selection criteria. The GSMF is {fit with} a double Schechter function, with $\mathcal M^\star=10^{10.78\pm0.01\pm0.20}M_\odot$, $\phi^\star_1=(2.93\pm0.40)\times10^{-3}h_{70}^3$Mpc$^{-3}$, $\alpha_1=-0.62\pm0.03\pm0.15$, $\phi^\star_2=(0.63\pm0.10)\times10^{-3}h_{70}^3$Mpc$^{-3}$, and $\alpha_2=-1.50\pm0.01\pm0.15$. We find the equivalent faint end slope as previously estimated using the GAMA-I sample, although we find a higher value of $\mathcal M^\star$. Using the full GAMA-II sample, we are able to fit the mass function to masses as low as $10^{7.5}$ $M_\odot$, and assess limits to $10^{6.5}$ $M_\odot$. Combining GAMA-II with data from G10-COSMOS we are able to comment qualitatively on the shape of the GSMF down to masses as low as $10^{6}$ $M_\odot$. Beyond the well known upturn seen in the GSMF at $10^{9.5}$ the distribution appears to maintain a single power-law slope from $10^9$ to $10^{6.5}$. We calculate the stellar mass density parameter given our best-estimate GSMF, finding $\Omega_\star= 1.66^{+0.24}_{-0.23}\pm0.97 h^{-1}_{70} \times 10^{-3}$, inclusive of random and systematic uncertainties., Comment: 22 pages; 15 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

There are many proposed mechanisms driving the morphological transformation of disk galaxies to elliptical galaxies. In this paper, we determine if the observed transformation in low mass groups can be explained by the merger histories of galaxies. We measured the group mass-morphology relation for groups from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly group catalogue with masses from 10$^{11}$ - 10$^{15}$ M$_{\odot}$. Contrary to previous studies, the fraction of elliptical galaxies in our more complete group sample increases significantly with group mass across the full range of group mass. The elliptical fraction increases at a rate of 0.163$\pm$0.012 per dex of group mass for groups more massive than 10$^{12.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. If we allow for uncertainties in the observed group masses, our results are consistent with a continuous increase in elliptical fraction from group masses as low as 10$^{11}$M$_{\odot}$. We tested if this observed relation is consistent with merger activity using a GADGET-2 dark matter simulation of the galaxy groups. We specified that a simulated galaxy would be transformed to an elliptical morphology either if it experienced a major merger or if its cumulative mass gained from minor mergers exceeded 30 per cent of its final mass. We then calculated a group mass-morphology relation for the simulations. The position and slope of the simulated relation were consistent with the observational relation, with a gradient of 0.184$\pm$0.010 per dex of group mass. These results demonstrate a strong correlation between the frequency of merger events and disk-to-elliptical galaxy transformation in galaxy group environments., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. We present evidence for halo assembly bias as a function of geometric environment. By classifying GAMA galaxy groups as residing in voids, sheets, filaments or knots using a tidal tensor method, we find that low-mass haloes that reside in knots are older than haloes of the same mass that reside in voids. This result provides direct support to theories that link strong halo tidal interactions with halo assembly times. The trend with geometric environment is reversed at large halo mass, with haloes in knots being younger than haloes of the same mass in voids. We find a clear signal of halo downsizing - more massive haloes host galaxies that assembled their stars earlier. This overall trend holds independently of geometric environment. We support our analysis with an in-depth exploration of the L-Galaxies semi-analytic model, used here to correlate several galaxy properties with three different definitions of halo formation time. We find a complex relationship between halo formation time and galaxy properties, with significant scatter. We confirm that stellar mass to halo mass ratio, specific star-formation rate and mass-weighed age are reasonable proxies of halo formation time, especially at low halo masses. Instantaneous star-formation rate is a poor indicator at all halo masses. Using the same semi-analytic model, we create mock spectral observations using complex star-formation and chemical enrichment histories, that approximately mimic GAMA's typical signal-to-noise and wavelength range. Galah is an ongoing high-resolution spectroscopic survey with the goal of disentangling the formation history of the Milky Way, using the fossil remnants of disrupted star formation sites which are now dispersed around the Galaxy. It is targeting a randomly selected, magnitude limited ($V \leq 14$) sample of stars, with the goal of observing one million objects. To date, 300,000 spectra have been obtained. Not all of them are correctly processed by parameter estimation pipelines and we need to know about them. We present a semi-automated classification scheme which identifies different types of peculiar spectral morphologies, in an effort to discover and flag potentially problematic spectra and thus help to preserve the integrity of the survey's results. To this end we employ a recently developed dimensionality reduction technique t-SNE (t-distributed Stochastic Neighbour Embedding), which enables us to represent the complex spectral morphology in a two-dimensional projection map while still preserving the properties of the local neighbourhoods of spectra. We find that the majority (178,483) of the 209,533 Galah spectra considered in this study represents normal single stars, whereas 31,050 peculiar and problematic spectra with very diverse spectral features pertaining to 28,579 stars are distributed into 10 classification categories: Hot stars, Cool metal-poor giants, Molecular absorption bands, Binary stars, H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ emission, H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ emission superimposed on absorption, H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ P-Cygni, H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ inverted P-Cygni, Lithium absorption, and Problematic. Classified spectra with supplementary information are presented in the catalogue, indicating candidates for follow-up observations and population studies of the short-lived phases of stellar evolution.

We present a pilot analysis of the influence of galaxy stellar mass and cluster environment on the probability of slow rotation in 22 central galaxies at mean redshift $z=0.07$. This includes new integral-field observations of 5 central galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, observed with the SPIRAL integral-field spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The composite sample presented here spans a wide range of stellar masses, $10.9<$log(M$_{*}/$M$_{\odot})<12.0$, and are embedded in halos ranging from groups to clusters, $12.9<$log(M$_{200}/$M$_{\odot})<15.6$. We find a mean probability of slow rotation in our sample of P(SR)$=54\pm7$percent. Our results show an increasing probability of slow rotation in central galaxies with increasing stellar mass. However, when we examine the dependence of slow rotation on host cluster halo mass we do not see a significant relationship. We also explore the influence of cluster dominance on slow rotation in central galaxies. Clusters with low dominance are associated with dynamically younger systems. We find that cluster dominance has no significant effect on the probability of slow rotation in central galaxies. We present a quantitative measurement of the amount of clustering present in the inner $\sim30$ kpc of the stellar halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). For this we analyse the angular positions and radial velocities of the carefully selected Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in the M31 stellar halo. We study the cumulative distribution of pair-wise distances in angular position and line of sight velocity space, and find that the M31 stellar halo contains substantially more stars in the form of close pairs as compared to that of a featureless smooth halo. In comparison to a smoothed/scrambled distribution we estimate that the clustering excess in the M31 inner halo is roughly $40\%$ at maximum and on average $\sim 20\%$. Importantly, comparing against the 11 stellar halo models of \cite{2005ApJ...635..931B}, which were simulated within the context of the $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ cosmological paradigm, we find that the amount of substructures in the M31 stellar halo closely resembles that of a typical $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ halo., Comment: 9 pages, to appear in MNRAS

We present a consistent total flux catalogue for a $\sim$1 deg$^2$ subset of the COSMOS region (R.A. $\in [149.55\degr, 150.65\degr]$, DEC $\in [1.80\degr, 2.73\degr]$) with near-complete coverage in 38 bands from the far-ultraviolet to the far-infrared. We produce aperture matched photometry for 128,304 objects with i < 24.5 in a manner that is equivalent to the Wright et al. (2016) catalogue from the low-redshift (z < 0.4) Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. This catalogue is based on publicly available imaging from GALEX, CFHT, Subaru, VISTA, Spitzer and Herschel, contains a robust total flux measurement or upper limit for every object in every waveband and complements our re-reduction of publicly available spectra in the same region. We perform a number of consistency checks, demonstrating that our catalogue is comparable to existing data sets, including the recent COSMOS2015 catalogue (Laigle et al. 2016). We also release an updated Davies et al. (2015) spectroscopic catalogue that folds in new spectroscopic and photometric redshift data sets. Our analysis is optimised for both panchromatic analysis over the full wavelength range and for direct comparison to GAMA, thus permitting measurements of galaxy evolution for 0 < z < 1 while minimising the systematic error resulting from disparate data reduction methods., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We investigate the contentious issue of the presence, or lack thereof, of satellites mass segregation in galaxy groups using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, the GALFORM semi-analytic and the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation catalogues of galaxy groups. We select groups with halo mass $12 \leqslant \log(M_{\text{halo}}/h^{-1}M_\odot) <14.5$ and redshift $z \leqslant 0.32$ and probe the radial distribution of stellar mass out to twice the group virial radius. All the samples are carefully constructed to be complete in stellar mass at each redshift range and efforts are made to regularise the analysis for all the data. Our study shows negligible mass segregation in galaxy group environments with absolute gradients of $\lesssim0.08$ dex and also shows a lack of any redshift evolution. Moreover, we find that our results at least for the GAMA data are robust to different halo mass and group centre estimates. Furthermore, the EAGLE data allows us to probe much fainter luminosities ($r$-band magnitude of 22) as well as investigate the three-dimensional spatial distribution with intrinsic halo properties, beyond what the current observational data can offer. In both cases we find that the fainter EAGLE data show a very mild spatial mass segregation at $z \leqslant 0.22$, which is again not apparent at higher redshift. Interestingly, our results are in contrast to some earlier findings using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We build on a recent photometric decomposition analysis of 7506 Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey galaxies to derive stellar mass function fits to individual spheroid and disk component populations down to a lower mass limit of log(M_*/M_sun)= 8. We find that the spheroid/disk mass distributions for individual galaxy morphological types are well described by single Schechter function forms. We derive estimates of the total stellar mass densities in spheroids (rho_spheroid = 1.24+/-0.49 * 10^8 M_sun Mpc^-3 h_0.7) and disks (rho_disk = 1.20+/-0.45 * 10^8 M_sun Mpc^-3 h_0.7), which translates to approximately 50% of the local stellar mass density in spheroids and 48% in disks. The remaining stellar mass is found in the dwarf "little blue spheroid" class, which is not obviously similar in structure to either classical spheroid or disk populations. We also examine the variation of component mass ratios across galaxy mass and group halo mass regimes, finding the transition from spheroid to disk mass dominance occurs near galaxy stellar mass ~10^11 M_sun and group halo mass ~10^12.5 M_sun/h. We further quantify the variation in spheroid-to-total mass ratio with group halo mass for central and satellite populations as well as the radial variation of this ratio within groups., Comment: 14 pages; 10 figures; MNRAS accepted

We present the data reduction procedures being used by the GALAH survey, carried out with the HERMES fibre-fed, multi-object spectrograph on the 3.9~m Anglo-Australian Telescope. GALAH is a unique survey, targeting 1 million stars brighter than magnitude V=14 at a resolution of 28,000 with a goal to measure the abundances of 29 elements. Such a large number of high resolution spectra necessitates the development of a reduction pipeline optimized for speed, accuracy, and consistency. We outline the design and structure of the Iraf-based reduction pipeline that we developed, specifically for GALAH, to produce fully calibrated spectra aimed for subsequent stellar atmospheric parameter estimation. The pipeline takes advantage of existing Iraf routines and other readily available software so as to be simple to maintain, testable and reliable. A radial velocity and stellar atmospheric parameter estimator code is also presented, which is used for further data analysis and yields a useful verification of the reduction quality. We have used this estimator to quantify the data quality of GALAH for fibre cross-talk level ($\lesssim0.5$%) and scattered light ($\sim5$ counts in a typical 20 minutes exposure), resolution across the field, sky spectrum properties, wavelength solution reliability (better than $1$ $\mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ accuracy) and radial velocity precision.

We perform automated bulge + disc decomposition on a sample of $\sim$7500 galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey in the redshift range of 0.002$<$z$<$0.06 using SIGMA, a wrapper around GALFIT3. To achieve robust profile measurements we use a novel approach of repeatedly fitting the galaxies, varying the input parameters to sample a large fraction of the input parameter space. Using this method we reduce the catastrophic failure rate significantly and verify the confidence in the fit independently of $\chi^2$. Additionally, using the median of the final fitting values and the 16$^{th}$ and 84$^{th}$ percentile produces more realistic error estimates than those provided by GALFIT, which are known to be underestimated. We use the results of our decompositions to analyse the stellar mass - half-light radius relations of bulges, discs and spheroids. We further investigate the association of components with a parent disc or elliptical relation to provide definite $z=0$ disc and spheroid $\mathcal{M_\star}-R_{\rm e}$ relations. We conclude by comparing our local disc and spheroid $\mathcal{M_\star}-R_{\rm e}$ to simulated data from EAGLE and high redshift data from CANDELS-UDS. We present the Lambda Adaptive Multi-Band Deblending Algorithm in R (LAMBDAR), a novel code for calculating matched aperture photometry across images that are neither pixel- nor PSF-matched, using prior aperture definitions derived from high resolution optical imaging. The development of this program is motivated by the desire for consistent photometry and uncertainties across large ranges of photometric imaging, for use in calculating spectral energy distributions. We describe the program, specifically key features required for robust determination of panchromatic photometry: propagation of apertures to images with arbitrary resolution, local background estimation, aperture normalisation, uncertainty determination and propagation, and object deblending. Using simulated images, we demonstrate that the program is able to recover accurate photometric measurements in both high-resolution, low-confusion, and low-resolution, high-confusion, regimes. We apply the program to the 21-band photometric dataset from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) Panchromatic Data Release (PDR; Driver et al. 2016), which contains imaging spanning the far-UV to the far-IR. We compare photometry derived from LAMBDAR with that presented in Driver et al. (2016), finding broad agreement between the datasets. Nonetheless, we demonstrate that the photometry from LAMBDAR is superior to that from the GAMA PDR, as determined by a reduction in the outlier rate and intrinsic scatter of colours in the LAMBDAR dataset. We similarly find a decrease in the outlier rate of stellar masses and star formation rates using LAMBDAR photometry. We report an expanded sample of visual morphological classifications from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey phase two, which now includes 7,556 objects (previously 3,727 in phase one). We define a local (z <0.06) sample and classify galaxies into E, S0-Sa, SB0-SBa, Sab-Scd, SBab-SBcd, Sd-Irr, and "little blue spheroid" types. Using these updated classifications, we derive stellar mass function fits to individual galaxy populations divided both by morphological class and more general spheroid- or disk-dominated categories with a lower mass limit of log(Mstar/Msun) = 8 (one dex below earlier morphological mass function determinations). We find that all individual morphological classes and the combined spheroid-/bulge-dominated classes are well described by single Schechter stellar mass function forms. We find that the total stellar mass densities for individual galaxy populations and for the entire galaxy population are bounded within our stellar mass limits and derive an estimated total stellar mass density of rho_star = 2.5 x 10^8 Msun Mpc^-3 h_0.7, which corresponds to an approximately 4% fraction of baryons found in stars. The mass contributions to this total stellar mass density by galaxies that are dominated by spheroidal components (E and S0-Sa classes) and by disk components (Sab-Scd and Sd-Irr classes) are approximately 70% and 30%, respectively., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures (high-resolution figures available in journal version), MNRAS accepted

We present the GAMA Panchromatic Data Release (PDR) constituting over 230deg$^2$ of imaging with photometry in 21 bands extending from the far-UV to the far-IR. These data complement our spectroscopic campaign of over 300k galaxies, and are compiled from observations with a variety of facilities including: GALEX, SDSS, VISTA, WISE, and Herschel, with the GAMA regions currently being surveyed by VST and scheduled for observations by ASKAP. These data are processed to a common astrometric solution, from which photometry is derived for 221,373 galaxies with r<19.8 mag. Online tools are provided to access and download data cutouts, or the full mosaics of the GAMA regions in each band. We focus, in particular, on the reduction and analysis of the VISTA VIKING data, and compare to earlier datasets (i.e., 2MASS and UKIDSS) before combining the data and examining its integrity. Having derived the 21-band photometric catalogue we proceed to fit the data using the energy balance code MAGPHYS. These measurements are then used to obtain the first fully empirical measurement of the 0.1-500$\mu$m energy output of the Universe. Exploring the Cosmic Spectral Energy Distribution (CSED) across three time-intervals (0.3-1.1Gyr, 1.1-1.8~Gyr and 1.8---2.4~Gyr), we find that the Universe is currently generating $(1.5 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{35}$ h$_{70}$ W Mpc$^{-3}$, down from $(2.5 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{35}$ h$_{70}$ W Mpc$^{-3}$ 2.3~Gyr ago. More importantly, we identify significant and smooth evolution in the integrated photon escape fraction at all wavelengths, with the UV escape fraction increasing from 27(18)% at z=0.18 in NUV(FUV) to 34(23)% at z=0.06. The GAMA PDR will allow for detailed studies of the energy production and outputs of individual systems, sub-populations, and representative galaxy samples at $z<0.5$. The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey is one of the largest contemporary spectroscopic surveys of low-redshift galaxies. Covering an area of ~286 deg^2 (split among five survey regions) down to a limiting magnitude of r < 19.8 mag, we have collected spectra and reliable redshifts for 238,000 objects using the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. In addition, we have assembled imaging data from a number of independent surveys in order to generate photometry spanning the wavelength range 1 nm - 1 m. Here we report on the recently completed spectroscopic survey and present a series of diagnostics to assess its final state and the quality of the redshift data. We also describe a number of survey aspects and procedures, or updates thereof, including changes to the input catalogue, redshifting and re-redshifting, and the derivation of ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared photometry. Finally, we present the second public release of GAMA data. In this release we provide input catalogue and targeting information, spectra, redshifts, ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared photometry, single-component S\'ersic fits, stellar masses, H$\alpha$-derived star formation rates, environment information, and group properties for all galaxies with r < 19.0 mag in two of our survey regions, and for all galaxies with r < 19.4 mag in a third region (72,225 objects in total). The GALAH survey is a large high-resolution spectroscopic survey using the newly commissioned HERMES spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The HERMES spectrograph provides high-resolution (R ~28,000) spectra in four passbands for 392 stars simultaneously over a 2 degree field of view. The goal of the survey is to unravel the formation and evolutionary history of the Milky Way, using fossil remnants of ancient star formation events which have been disrupted and are now dispersed throughout the Galaxy. Chemical tagging seeks to identify such dispersed remnants solely from their common and unique chemical signatures; these groups are unidentifiable from their spatial, photometric or kinematic properties. To carry out chemical tagging, the GALAH survey will acquire spectra for a million stars down to V~14. The HERMES spectra of FGK stars contain absorption lines from 29 elements including light proton-capture elements, alpha-elements, odd-Z elements, iron-peak elements and n-capture elements from the light and heavy s-process and the r-process. Halo stars orbit within the potential of the Milky Way and hence their kinematics can be used to understand the underlying mass distribution. However, the inferred mass distribution depends sensitively upon assumptions made on the density and the velocity anisotropy profiles of the tracers. Also, there is a degeneracy between the parameters of the halo and that of the disk or bulge. Here, we decompose the Galaxy into bulge, disk and dark matter halo and then model the kinematic data of the halo BHB and K-giants from the SEGUE. Additionally, we use the gas terminal velocity curve and the Sgr A$^*$ proper motion. With $R_\odot = 8.5$kpc, our study reveals that the density of the stellar halo has a break at $17.2^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$ kpc, and an exponential cut-off in the outer parts starting at $97.7^{+15.6}_{-15.8}$kpc. Also, we find the velocity anisotropy is radially biased with $\beta_s= 0.4\pm{0.2}$ in the outer halo. We measure halo virial mass $M_{\text{vir}} = 0.80^{+0.31}_{-0.16} \times 10^{12} M_{\odot}$, concentration $c=21.1^{+14.8}_{-8.3}$, disk mass of $0.95^{+0.24}_{-0.30}\times10^{11} M_{\odot}$, disk scale length of $4.9^{+0.4}_{-0.4}$ kpc and bulge mass of $0.91^{+0.31}_{-0.38} \times 10^{10} M_{\odot}$. The mass of halo is found to be small and this has important consequences. The giant stars reveal that the outermost halo stars have low velocity dispersion interestingly suggesting a truncation of the stellar halo density rather than a small overall mass of the Galaxy. Our estimates of local escape velocity $v_{\rm esc} = 550.9^{+32.4}_{-22.1}$ kms$^{-1}$ and dark matter density $\rho^{\rm DM}_{\odot} = 0.0088^{+0.0024}_{-0.0018} M_{\odot} {\rm pc^{-3}} $ ($0.35^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$ GeV cm$^{-3}$) are in good agreement with recent estimates. Here we study the metallicity bias in the velocity dispersions, the derived quantity called anisotropy and the mean azimuthal velocity profiles of the Milky Way stellar halo using Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) stars taken from SDSS/SEGUE survey. The comparatively metal-rich sample ([Fe/H]>-2) has prograde motion and is found to have an offset of 40 km/s in the mean azimuthal velocity with respect to a metal-poor sample ([Fe/H]<=-2) which has retrograde motion. The difference in rotation between the most metal-poor and most metal-rich population was found to be around 65 km/s. For galactocentric distances r<16 kpc, an offset in velocity dispersion profiles and anisotropy can also be seen. In the inner regions, the metal-poor population is in average tangential orbit; however, anisotropy is found to decrease monotonically with radius independent of metallicity. Beyond r = 16 kpc, both the metal-rich and the metal-poor samples are found to have tangential motion. The metallicity bias in the kinematics of the halo stars qualitatively supports the co-existence of at least two-components in the halo having different formation history e.g. in-situ formation and formation by accretion., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (2013 January 14)

Here we present a kinematic study of the Galactic halo out to a radius of $\sim$ 60 kpc, using 4664 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars selected from the SDSS/SEGUE survey, to determine key dynamical properties. Using a maximum likelihood analysis, we determine the velocity dispersion profiles in spherical coordinates ($\sigma_{r}$, $\sigma_{\theta}$, $\sigma_{\phi}$) and the anisotropy profile ($\beta$). The radial velocity dispersion profile ($\sigma_{r}$) is measured out to a galactocentric radius of $r \sim 60$ kpc, but due to the lack of proper-motion information, $\sigma_{\theta}$, $\sigma_{\phi}$ and $\beta$ could only be derived directly out to $r \sim25$ kpc.
