1. Thermohydraulic performance study of the effect of winglet inserts and a corrugated wall in a rectangular channel

Abstract

This numerical study investigates the enhancement of heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in rectangular channels with transverse corrugations and longitudinal winglet vortex generators. Numerical simulations cover a range of Reynolds numbers (Re) (5000–20000) using channels with uniform wall heat flux and fixed wavelength. The study evaluates the influence of geometrical parameters (corrugated channel amplitude and winglet length) on flow and temperature characteristics, average Nusselt number (Nu), and pressure drop. Corrugated channels alone create stationary transverse vortices that impede heat transfer. However, integrating winglet vortex generators introduces beneficial longitudinal vortices, disrupting stationary vortices, perturbing the thermal boundary layer, enhancing near-wall turbulence, and improving fluid mixing and heat transfer compared to smooth and corrugated channels. At Reynolds number (Re)20,000, corrugated channels with winglets exhibit 167.7 % and 61.8 % higher Nusselt numbers compared to smooth and corrugated channels, respectively. However, this enhanced heat transfer accompanies increased pressure drop. Both heat transfer and pressure drop rise with higher Reynolds numbers (Re), corrugation amplitude, and winglet length. This study provides insights into heat transfer mechanisms in corrugated channels and the potential for improvement through winglet vortex generators.

Abstract

In the current research, the triple concentric-pipe heat exchanger is experimentally inspected with regard to the double concentric-pipe heat exchanger. To optimize the design, the thermo-fluid of the heat exchangers has been clarified with respect to several design parameters for a counter and parallel flows. One procedure is to full the inner pipe with chilled water and the inner annulus pipe with hot water, while the outer annulus pipe, the tap water was used. The temperatures of the supplied water measured by thermocouples linked to the computer through a data acquisition unit. The flow rates of the system's water were evaluated by 3 flow-meters while the water's drop pressure were measured using a pre-calibrated digital pulse pressure transmitter. The performed flow patterns were the co-current, counter-current, co-current with counter-current flow and counter-current with co-current. The efficiency, friction factor and Nusselt number have been investigated and compared for both types of exchangers. The results showed that the triple concentric-pipe heat exchanger exhibited high heat exchanging efficiency and lower energy consumption than the double concentric-pipe heat exchanger. By the same token, better efficiency ε (around 50% greater) obtained for both counter and parallel flows. The results also revealed that with various flow arrangements, Nu, and the ε, for the triple concentric-pipe heat exchanger are greater than that for the Double concentric-pipe heat exchanger.

Abstract

In order to assess the performance efficiency of a flat plate solar collector. The current investigation focuses on a wide range of nanoparticles suspended in basefluid to create nanofluid. Additionally, the current investigation has been carried out with the best particle volume concentration possible based on our experimental results with varied mass flow rates along three months Feb, March and April 2020 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The volume fractions of solid nanoparticles dispersed in water are 0.15, 0.25 and 0.35% with size diameter of 20 nm and mass flowrate are 0.021, 0.024 and 0.03 kg/s. According to experiments, the energy efficiency of a ZnO/water nanofluid is increased by 31% for a particle volume concentration of 0.35% at a mass flow rate of 0.03 kg/s. Increased system performance in terms of effective conversion of the available energy into useful functions is highlighted by the rise of energy and exergy efficiency. ZnO/water has the highest increase in energy efficiency of a collector, at 0.35%, followed by 0.25 then 0.15%, respectively.

Abstract

In the last few decades, finding alternatives to fossil fuels has become a hot issue across all international frontiers. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shed light on the feasibility of using biofuels to meet the growing energy demand as well as to reduce CO2 emissions which are a major cause of global warming, especially in the transportation sector. The production and use of biofuels in developing countries have further advantages, including social and economic benefits. On the other hand, the biofuel industry in some developing countries is facing critical challenges related to food security, land availability, production cost, etc. In this regard, several studies have recently been conducted to address these issues, and this paper comprehensively reviews these cases with respect to the successes, failures, and challenges faced by developing countries, such as Brazil, Africa and India, in expanding their biofuel production. It is clear that all the efforts devoted to promoting the biofuel sector are still insufficient to come over the challenges associated with biofuel production despite the achievements realized in some experiences as Brazil. However, the Brazilian experience cannot be spread over other countries. Implementation of policies with regard to the specifications of each country that integrate with the other sector without intersection is highly recommended. Moreover, further efforts are needed from scientists to reduce biofuel production costs, which may promote the biofuel market as an alternative to fossil fuel.

7. Pharmacoprint -- a combination of pharmacophore fingerprint and artificial intelligence as a tool for computer-aided drug design

Abstract

Structural fingerprints and pharmacophore modeling are methodologies that have been used for at least two decades in various fields of cheminformatics: from similarity searching to machine learning (ML). Advances in silico techniques consequently led to combining both these methodologies into a new approach known as pharmacophore fingerprint. Herein, we propose a high-resolution, pharmacophore fingerprint called Pharmacoprint that encodes the presence, types, and relationships between pharmacophore features of a molecule. Pharmacoprint was evaluated in classification experiments by using ML algorithms (logistic regression, support vector machines, linear support vector machines, and neural networks) and outperformed other popular molecular fingerprints (i.e., Estate, MACCS, PubChem, Substructure, Klekotha-Roth, CDK, Extended, and GraphOnly) and ChemAxon Pharmacophoric Features fingerprint. Pharmacoprint consisted of 39973 bits; several methods were applied for dimensionality reduction, and the best algorithm not only reduced the length of bit string but also improved the efficiency of ML tests. Further optimization allowed us to define the best parameter settings for using Pharmacoprint in discrimination tests and for maximizing statistical parameters. Finally, Pharmacoprint generated for 3D structures with defined hydrogens as input data was applied to neural networks with a supervised autoencoder for selecting the most important bits and allowed to maximize Matthews Correlation Coefficient up to 0.962. Abstract

The purpose of the study was to verify whether different methods of management systems auditing are perceived by the audited organizations as equally beneficial. On-site audits were compared with remote audits, as well as audits related to voluntary management systems with audits related to mandatory management systems. The survey on organizations from the food sector with the use of CATI/CAWI mix methodology was carried out. The analysis carried out has shown that remote and on-site audits are perceived as equally beneficial. The degree of credibility,) usefulness in improving the organization and financial usefulness of these two audits methods were assessed at the same level. Statistically, significant differences have been identified between audits related to voluntary management systems and mandatory management systems. It was found that usefulness in improving the organization and financial usefulness of voluntary management systems audits are assessed higher than in the case of mandatory management systems.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the scope of undertaken and planned actions related to microplastics risk in one of the biggest polish food sector company for better understanding the relations between quality management, food safety management and circular economy. To explore the planed and undertaken actions in relation to microplastics risk a case study was performed. It was performed in one of the leading polish organization producing and selling food products of an international range of operation. During the study representative of the leadership of the organization was interviewed as well as relevant instructions and records provided by the organization were analysed. Results indicate that the issue of microplastics for studied company is a marginal problem, that has not been given much attention so far. On the other hand, significant changes at the global level such as circular economy strategy lead to changes in the design of products (mainly packaging). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to examine the microplastics risk from the perspective of the management systems implemented in food sector organization with the circular economy context. This study enriches current knowledge about circular economy and its integration with other management systems in the microplastics elimination context.

26. Gummibandet får aldrig brista - samverkans betydelse för problematisk skolfrånvaro

Abstract

SammanfattningDet övergripande syftet med studien är att öka kunskapen om specialpedagogers och kuratorers respektive perspektiv på problematisk skolfrånvaro i svensk grundskola samt undersöka deras erfarenheter av samverkan i denna fråga.Syftet med denna kvalitativa studie är att öka kunskapen om specialpedagogers och kuratorers respektive perspektiv på problematisk skolfrånvaro i svenska grundskola samt undersöka deras erfarenheter av samverkan i denna fråga.För att besvara våra frågeställningar genomförde vi en kvalitativ intervjustudie med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Vi intervjuade fem specialpedagoger och sex kuratorer som arbetar på tio olika skolor inom samma kommun i Mellansverige. Vi utgick från Danermarks (2004) samverkansteori och Sundqvist (2021) nivåer för samverkan i vår analys samt genomförde en tematisk analys av det empiriska materialet. Den tematiska analysen resulterade i följande teman: att elever och vårdnadshavare upplever sig trygga, att bygga tillitsfulla relationer, tydliga rutiner kring frånvaro samt skapande av tillgängliga lärmiljöer vilket ses som nyckelfaktorer för att främja och förebygga problematisk skolfrånvaro. Andra teman som analyserades fram rör samverkansfaktorer; tydlig ansvarsfördelning, att möta svårigheter och hinder, att se det positiva. Resultatet visar att samverkan med externa aktörer som socialtjänst, skolsociala team, BUP och liknande är problematisk och inom skolan kan sekretess mellan professioner bli ett hinder. Ytterligare problematik i samverkan uppstår vid otydlig ansvarsfördelning och där delar av organisationen inte får rätt förutsättningar för samverkan. Vidare visar studien att problematisk skolfrånvaro är ett komplext fenomen, nyckelfaktorer som främjar närvaro och en god samverkan är att elever och vårdnadshavare upplever sig trygga, personalens förmåga att skapa goda relationer samt skolans möjligheter till kravanpassning och en god lärmiljö. Abstract

The demand of online remote working from home significantly increased in 2020/21 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This unforeseen situation has forced individuals and organisations to rapidly train employees and adopt the use of on-line working styles, seeking to maintain the same level of productivity as working from the office. The paper outlines a survey conducted amongst people working from home to identify the challenges and opportunities this change in workstyle offers. At the beginning of the pandemic, many employees faced difficulties adapting to using online tools and combining their working hours with daily routines and family commitments. However, the results show that within a short period of time the respondents had managed to develop the necessary experience and knowledge for digital working utilising tools such as collaboration platforms and video conferencing. A large proportion of respondents recognised the advantage of eliminating travelling time when working remotely from home which also has a positive impact on the environment and CO2 emissions. However, some drawbacks have been identified such as the lack of face-to-face discussion and informal meetings during working days. The Self-Determination Theory is discussed within the context of this paper and it has been found that the theory could provide an explanation of the efficient and rapid adaptation of the technology be employees.

28. Technical analysis of the renovation works of the wooden palace floors

Abstract

The paper presents technical analysis of two aspects of palace wooden floors – the first example describes renovation works in a historical building, while the second presents assembly of a new floor in the contemporary building. In case of both examples technology of construction works is discussed in details with a special focus on issues specific for wooden palace floors. The authors paid special attention to introduce problems that occurred during the performance of the works. Both cases are compared. The restoration of the antique mosaic is significantly different from the implementation of the palace mosaic (tile) from bottom-up. Restoration works required more effort, mostly due to the fact that the antique mosaic floor experienced many years of use and needed specific repairs. On the other hand making the palace mosaic from scratch is burdened with a much smaller number of unforeseen situations. Due to the high aesthetic requirements, decorative functions and unique character of both discussed examples of flooring works, each of the tasks was labour-consuming and needed highly specialized works.
