- Abstract
Le travail présenté entre dans le cadre du domaine d’interface home machine. Notre objectif est d’étudier l’impact informatique de l’intégration de la langue arabe dans les téléphones mobiles, afin de réaliser une interface home machine arabe. L’affichage correct des caractères arabes est indispensable dans une interface graphique. Puisque les caractères arabes changent leurs formes selon la position qu’ils occupent dans un mot, alors il est nécessaire de faire une analyse contextuelle sur chaque mot, pour trouver la forme correcte de chaque caractère. La transformation de deux ou plusieurs caractères en une seule forme, demande un traitement particulier, comme dans le cas de la ligature LAM-ALEF arabe. La langue arabe possède une direction d’écriture différente par rapport aux autres langues embarquées dans les téléphones mobiles, ce qui exige de trouver un algorithme bidirectionnel qui assure un affichage correct des messages SMS. Ces messages peuvent contenir des caractères de direction différente, de droite à gauche, de gauche à droite ou des caractères qui n’ont pas de direction. - Abstract
We report on the recent progress within the Geant4 electromagnetic physics subpackages. Several new interfaces and models recently introduced are already used in LHC applications and may be useful for any type of simulation. Significant developments were carried out to improve the user interface, develop models of single and multiple scattering, and validate high energy models. Part of these developments are included in the Geant4 10.2 release and the full set are available in the new version 10.3 of December, 2016., RST/Applied Radiation & Isotopes

18. Assessment of soluble skin surface protein levels for monitoring psoriasis vulgaris in adult psoriasis patients using non-invasive transdermal analysis patch: A pilot study

To improve the care of patients with chronic inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis, there is a need for diagnostic methods that can facilitate personalized medicine. This exploratory pilot study aimed to determine whether non-invasive measurements of inflammation-related proteins from psoriatic skin can be sampled using the FibroTx Transdermal Analysis Patch (TAP) to assess disease severity and monitor pharmacodynamic changes. Ten healthy volunteers and 44 psoriasis vulgaris patients were enrolled in the exploratory pilot study. Skin surface protein measurements for healthy and lesional skin were performed using TAP. Patients’ scores of psoriasis activity and severity (PASI) were documented, and differences in the thickness of skin layers were determined using sonography. The study assessed the skin surface protein levels of psoriasis patients undergoing whole-body treatment with narrow-band UVB to evaluate whether the levels of the skin surface proteins IL-1α, IL-1RA CXCL-1/2, and hBD-1 were associated with the disease activity and severity measurements. Using TAP technology, it was observed that there were clear differences in levels of IL-1α, IL-1RA, CXCL-1/2, and hBD-1 between psoriasis lesional and non-lesional skin. In addition, a positive correlation between CXCL-1/2 and desquamation, and between CXCL-1/2 and SLEB thickness was observed. During UVB treatment, the TAP measurements revealed a clear reduction of IL-1RA, CXCL 1/2, and hBD-1 on lesional skin. Further, skin surface measurements of IL-1RA and CXCL-1/2 displayed a different profile than those achieved by visual scoring of local inflammation, thus indicating that measuring the ‘molecular root’ of inflammation appears to have value as an objective, non-invasive biomarker measurement for scoring disease severity.

19. Pouvoir pathogène de Botrytis cinerea sur Catharanthus roseus à différents stades végétatifs

- Abstract
Objectifs : Ce travail vise à mettre en évidence le pouvoir pathogène de Botrytis cinerea vis-à-vis de Catharantus roseus, espèce ornementale et médicinale, à différents stades végétatifs.Méthodologie et résultats : Des plantules de 4 à 5 feuilles (Lot S1) et des plantes en fleurs (Lot S2) de C. roseus ont été inoculées par les suspensions sporales de trois isolats de B. cinerea. L’évolution de la maladie de la pourriture grise sur les deux lots a été suivie en fonction du temps. Les symptômes ont concerné toutes les parties de la plante. Les lésions, de forme circulaires à elliptiques et de couleur brun foncé à noirâtre, apparaissent sur les feuilles 7 jours après inoculation. Elles deviennent par la suite crispées, déformées et desséchées. Sur les tiges se développent des chancres colonisés par une moisissure grise. Les boutons floraux et les fleurs attaqués sont couverts d’un feutrage velouté et gris. Chez le lot S1, 49 plantules sur 90 ont pourries 30 jours après inoculation. Les indices de sévérité et les Coefficients d’infection ont également augmenté en fonction du temps. Ils sont faibles 7 jours aprèsinoculation, ne dépassant pas 14,22% et 619,33. Au 19ème jour, ils ont atteint respectivement 54,29% (BC1) et 2262 (BC2) sur les plantules et 38,37% et 1069 pour BC1 sur les plantes en fleurs et au 31ème jour, ils devenus très importants, 83,83% et 3136 chez l’isolat BC1. La comparaison entre les indices de sévérité et les coefficients d’infection des deux lots pour chaque isolat et les jours d’inoculation confondus a montré sur les plantules du Lot S1 (I.S=51,85% pour BC1 et C.I=1987.92 pour BC2) sont plus sensibles aux isolats de B. cinerea que les plantes en fleurs du Lot S2 (I.S=38,53 et C.I=1274.41 pour BC1). Au 31ème jour après inoculation, les indices de sévérité et les coefficients d’infection les plus importants sont marqués par l’isolat BC1 qui s’est montré très virulent aussi bien sur les plantules (I.S=83,83% et C.I=3136) que les plantes en fleurs (I.S=66,63% et C.I=2853,3).Conclusion et application de la recherche : l’étude a montré le pouvoir pathogène de B. cinerea sur C. roseus à différents stades végétatifs et ajouté un autre hôte à la gamme d’hôte de ce pathogène. De plus, ces observations ont une application en épidémiologie et dans le contrôle de la pourriture grise.Mots clés : Catharanthus roseus, Botrytis cinerea, pourriture grise, inoculation.

- Abstract
In this work we report on recent improvements in the electromagnetic (EM) physics models of Geant4 and new validations of EM physics. Improvements have been made in models of the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, gamma conversion to electron and muon pairs, fluctuations of energy loss, multiple scattering, synchrotron radiation, and high energy positron annihilation. The results of these developments are included in the new Geant4 version 10.1 and in patches to previous versions 9.6 and 10.0 that are planned to be used for production for run-2 at LHC. The Geant4 validation suite for EM physics has been extended and new validation results are shown in this work. In particular, the effect of gamma-nuclear interactions on EM shower shape at LHC energies is discussed.

In this article, an approach to compute the dose conversion coefficients (DCCs) is described for the computational voxel phantom 'High-Definition Reference Korean-Man' (HDRK-Man) using artificial neural networks (ANN). For this purpose, the voxel phantom was implemented into the Monte Carlo (MC) transport toolkit GEANT4, and the DCCs for more than 30 tissues and organs, due to a broad parallel beam of monoenergetic photons with energy ranging from 15 to 150 keV by a step of 5 keV, were calculated. To study the influence of patient size on DCC values, DCC calculation was performed, for a representative body size population, using five different sizes covering the range of 80-120 % magnification of the original HDRK-Man. The focus of the present study was on the computation of DCC for the human heart. ANN calculation and MC simulation results were compared, and good agreement was observed showing that ANNs can be used as an efficient tool for modelling DCCs for the computational voxel phantom. ANN approach appears to be a significant advance over the time-consuming MC methods for DCC calculation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The computational voxel phantom 'High-Definition Reference Korean-Man (HDRK-Man)' was implemented into the Monte Carlo transport toolkit Geant4. The voxel model, adjusted to the Reference Korean Man, is 171 cm in height and 68 kg in weight and composed of ~30 million voxels whose size is 1.981 × 1.981 × 2.0854 mm
3 . The Geant4 code is then utilised to compute the dose conversion coefficients (DCCs) expressed in absorbed dose per air kerma free in air for >30 tissues and organs, including almost all organs required in the new recommendation of the ICRP 103, due to a broad parallel beam of monoenergetic photons impinging in antero-postero direction with energy ranging from 10 to 150 keV. The computed DCCs of different organs are found to be in good agreement with data published using other simulation codes. Also, the influence of patient size on DCC values was investigated for a representative body size of the adult Korean patient population. The study was performed using five different sizes covering the range of 0.8-1.2 magnification order of the original HDRK-Man. It focussed on the computation of DCC for the human heart. Moreover, the provided DCCs were used to present an analytical parameterisation for the calculation of the cardiac absorbed dose for any arbitrary X-ray spectrum and for those patient sizes. Thus, the present work can be considered as an enhancement of the continuous studies performed by medical physicist as part of quality control tests and radiation protection dosimetry. Background The management of flexor tendon injuries has evolved in recent years through industrial improvements in suture materials, refinements of repair methods, and early rehabilitation protocols. However, there is no consensus on the ideal suture material and technique. This study was conducted to compare the tensile strength, repair time, and characteristics of 4-strand cruciate, modified Kessler, and 4-strand horizontal intrafiber barbed sutures for flexor tenorrhaphy with a 12-mm suture purchase length in an animal model. Methods The right third deep flexors of 60 adult Leghorn chicken feet were isolated and repaired with a 12-mm suture purchase length. The tendons were randomly assigned to three groups of equal number (n=20 each). Groups 1 and 2 received 4-strand cruciate and modified Kessler repair with conventional suture materials, respectively. A 4-strand horizontal intrafiber barbed suture technique was used in group 3. The repaired tendons were biomechanically tested for tensile strength, 2-mm gap resistance, and mode of failure. Repair times were also recorded. Results The maximum tensile strength until failure was 44.6±4.3 N in group 1, 35.7±5.2 N in group 2, and 56.7±17.3 N in group 3. Malignant changes arising on the previously traumatized or chronically inflamed skin are defined as Marjolin ulcers. They can develop on many different lesions but frequently they are detected on burn scars. Histopathologically, Marjolin ulcers are mostly diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma and they need special attention when especially located on the lower extremities. In this study, 63 patients treated for Marjolin ulcers between January 2000 and March 2015 were evaluated according to etiology, histological differentiation, primary tumor size, patient age and anatomical localization. Medical records of these patients were reviewed retrospectively. Mean age was 49.7 years. Average interval between the first injury and carcinoma development was 37.9 years. Most frequent etiologic factor was burn scars with 82.5%. Foot was the most frequently affected site with 28.6% and scalp was the second most frequent localization with 25.4%. Squamous cell carcinomas were detected in 88.9% of the patients and basal cell carcinomas were detected in 11.1% of the patients. For treatment, excision and grafting was performed for 48 patients (76.2%), excision and local flaps were used for 10 patients (15.9%) and excision and free flaps were used for five patients (7.9%). Regional lymph node dissection was performed for 12 patients (19%). Average follow up period was 46.5 months. Local recurrences were detected in nine patients (14.3%). In conclusion, Marjolin ulcers are aggressive tumors that require special care. In order to prevent life threatening sequelas of this entity, it is important to know basic aspects of clinical progress, prognostic factors and treatment modalities.

Digital nerve injuries are the mostly detected nerve injury in the upper extremity. However, since the clinical phenomenon of crossover innervation at some degree from uninjured digital nerve to the injured side occurs after digital nerve injuries is sustained, one could argue that this concept might even result in the overestimation of the outcome of the digital nerve repair. With this knowledge in mind, this study aimed to present novel, pure, focused and valuable clinical data by comparing the outcomes of bilateral and unilateral digital nerve repair. A retrospective review of 28 fingers with unilateral or bilateral digital nerve repair using end-to-end technique in 19 patients within 2 years was performed. Weber′s two-point discrimination, sharp/dull discrimination, warm/cold sensation and Visual Analog Scale scoring were measured at final 12-month follow ups in all patients. There was no significant difference in recovery of sensibility after unilateral and bilateral digital nerve repairs. Though there is crossover innervation microscopically, it is not important in the clinical evaluation period. According to clinical findings from this study, crossover innervations appear to be negligible in the estimation of outcomes of digital neurorrhaphy.

The Geant4 electromagnetic (EM) physics sub-packages are a component of LHC experiment simulations. During long shutdown 2 for LHC, these packages are under intensive development and we report progress of EM physics in Geant4 versions 10.5 and 10.6, which includes faster computation, more accurate EM models, and extensions to the validation suite. New approaches are developed to simulate radiation damage for silicon vertex detectors and for configuration of multiple scattering per detector region. Improvements in user interfaces developed for low-energy and the Geant4-DNA project are used also for LHC simulation optimisation.

37. The Common Partner of Several Methyltransferases TRMT112 Regulates the Expression of N6AMT1 Isoforms in Mammalian Cells

Methylation is a widespread modification occurring in DNA, RNA and proteins. The N6AMT1 (HEMK2) protein has DNA N6-methyladenine as well as the protein glutamine and histone lysine methyltransferase activities. The human genome encodes two different isoforms of N6AMT1, the major isoform and the alternatively spliced isoform, where the substrate binding motif is missing. Several RNA methyltransferases involved in ribosome biogenesis, tRNA methylation and translation interact with the common partner, the TRMT112 protein. In this study, we show that TRMT112 regulates the expression of N6AMT1 isoforms in mammalian cells. Both isoforms are equally expressed on mRNA level, but only isoform 1 is detected on the protein level in human cells. We show that the alternatively spliced isoform is not able to interact with TRMT112 and when translated, is rapidly degraded from the cells. This suggests that TRMT112 is involved in cellular quality control ensuring that N6AMT1 isoform with missing substrate binding domain is eliminated from the cells. The down-regulation of TRMT112 does not affect the N6AMT1 protein levels in cells, suggesting that the two proteins of TRMT112 network, WBSCR22 and N6AMT1, are differently regulated by their common cofactor.

We report on developments of the Geant4 electromagnetic physics sub-libraries of Geant4 release 10.4 and beyond. Modifications are introduced to the models of photoelectric effect, bremsstrahlung, gamma conversion, single and multiple scattering. The theory-based Goudsmit-Saunderson model of electron/positron multiple scattering has been recently reviewed and a new improved version, providing the most accurate results for scattering of electrons and positrons, was made available. The updated interfaces, models and configurations have already been integrated into LHC applications and may be useful for any type of simulations.

Background The most common cause of skin graft failure is the collection of blood or serous fluid underneath the graft. In our study, we describe the use of silicone tube for tie-over dressing to secure the skin graft margins with the aim of decreasing loss of the skin graft, particularly in grafting of deep wounds. Methods Between March 2008 and July 2011, we used this technique in 17 patients with skin defects with depths ranging from 3.5 to 8 mm (mean, 5.5 mm). First, the skin graft was sutured with 3/0 silk suture material from its corners. Then, a silicone round drain tube was sutured with 3/0 absorbable polyglactin 910 over the margins of the graft. Finally, long silk threads were tied over the bolus dressing, and the tie-over dressing was completed in the usual fashion. Results The mean follow-up was 7 months (range, 2-10 months) in the outpatient clinic. Graft loss on the graft margins due to hematoma or seroma was not developed. The results of adhesion between the graft and wound bed peripherally was excellent. Conclusions In our study, we suggest that use of a silicone tube for additional pressure on the edges of skin grafts in case of reconstruction of deep skin defects.

Ingrown nail surgery is the one of the most common surgeries in outpatient clinics that are generally perfomed in response to patient complaints. Still, making simple observations, taking patient histories and conducting further tests are often neglected by outpatient clinics. Consequently, it is important to be aware if ingrown nail is associated with any underlying diseases that can lead to major complications. In this article, we report on two cases ending in amputation that were performed with Winograd’s partial matrix excision procedure for ingrown nails. Such a complication is rare, unexpected, and most unwanted in forefoot surgery. After a detailed analysis of the situation, we discovered that both patients were smokers, and one of them had Buerger’s disease. These conditions led to the ingrown nails in addition to poor wound healing. This case report emphasizes the fact that even when performing minor procedures, obtaining a detailed history and conducting an examination are of paramount importance. Patient selection is also a considerable factor, especially for patients who are smokers, who may experience a worst case surgical scenario.

The human WBSCR22 protein is a 18S rRNA methyltransferase involved in pre-rRNA processing and ribosome 40S subunit biogenesis. Recent studies have shown that the protein function in ribosome synthesis is independent of its enzymatic activity. In this work, we have studied the WBSCR22 protein interaction partners by SILAC-coupled co-immunoprecipitation assay and identified TRMT112 as the interaction partner of WBSCR22. Knock-down of TRMT112 expression decreased the WBSCR22 protein level in mammalian cells, suggesting that the stability of WBSCR22 is regulated through the interaction with TRMT112. The localization of the TRMT112 protein is determined by WBSCR22, and the WBSCR22-TRMT112 complex is localized in the cell nucleus. We provide evidence that the interaction between WBSCR22/Bud23 and TRMT112/Trm112 is conserved between mammals and yeast, suggesting that the function of TRMT112 as a co-activator of methyltransferases is evolutionarily conserved. Finally, we show that the transiently expressed WBSCR22 protein is ubiquitinated and degraded through the proteasome pathway, revealing the tight control of the WBSCR22 protein level in the cells.

The human WBSCR22 protein was previously shown to be up-regulated in invasive breast cancer and its ectopic expression enhances tumor cell survival in the vasculature. In the current study, we show that the WBSCR22 protein is important for cell growth. Knock-down of WBSCR22 with siRNA results in slower growth of WBSCR22-depleted cells. Treatment with siWBSCR22 causes defects in the processing of pre-rRNAs and reduces the level of free 40S ribosomal subunit, suggesting that WBSCR22 is involved in ribosome small subunit biosynthesis. The human WBSCR22 partially complements the growth of WBSCR22 yeast homologue, bud23 deletion mutant suggesting that the human WBSCR22 is a functional homologue of yeast Bud23. WBSCR22 is localized throughout the cell nucleus and is not stably associated with ribosomal subunits within the cell nucleus. We also show that the WBSCR22 protein level is decreased in lymphoblastoid cell lines derived from William-Beuren Syndrome (WBS) patients compared to healthy controls. Our data suggest that the WBSCR22 protein is a ribosome biogenesis factor involved in the biosynthesis of 40S ribosomal particles in mammalian cells.

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are becoming increasingly popular and an integral part of our everyday lives, making them a lucrative target for attackers. These devices require suitable security mechanisms that enable robust and effective detection of attacks. Machine learning (ML) and its subdivision Deep Learning (DL) methods offer a promise, but they can be computationally expensive in providing better detection for resource-constrained IoT devices. Therefore, this research proposes an optimization method to train ML and DL methods for effective and efficient security monitoring of IoT devices. It first investigates the feasibility of the Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM) for attack detection in IoT environments, proposing an optimization procedure to obtain its effective counterparts. The trained LGBM can successfully discern attacks and regular traffic in various IoT benchmark datasets used in this research. As LGBM is a traditional ML technique, it may be difficult to learn complex network traffic patterns present in IoT datasets. Therefore, we further examine Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), proposing an effective and efficient DNN-based security solution for IoT security monitoring to leverage more resource savings and accurate attack detection. Investigation results are promising, as the proposed optimization method exploits the mini-batch gradient descent with simulated micro-batching in building effective and efficient DNN-based IoT security solutions. Following the success of DNN for effective and efficient attack detection, we further exploit it in the context of adversarial attack resistance. The resulting DNN is more resistant to adversarial samples than its benchmark counterparts and other conventional ML methods. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposal, we considered on-device learning in federated learning settings, using decentralized edge devices to augment data privacy in resource-constrained environments. To this end, the performance of the method was evaluated against various realistic IoT datasets (e.g. NBaIoT, MNIST) on virtual and realistic testbed set-ups with GB-BXBT-2807 edge-computing-like devices. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce memory and time usage by 81% and 22% in the simulated environment of virtual workers compared to its benchmark counterpart. In the realistic testbed scenario, it saves 6% of memory footprints with a reduction of execution time by 15%, while maintaining a better and state-of-the-art accuracy.

Journal of Instrumentation 13(10), P10005 (2018). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/13/10/P10005, The algorithm developed by the CMS Collaboration to reconstruct and identify τ leptons produced in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$7 and 8 TeV, via their decays to hadrons and a neutrino, has been significantly improved. The changes include a revised reconstruction of $π^0$ candidates, and improvements in multivariate discriminants to separate τ leptons from jets and electrons. The algorithm is extended to reconstruct $τ$ leptons in highly Lorentz-boosted pair production, and in the high-level trigger. The performance of the algorithm is studied using proton-proton collisions recorded during 2016 at $\sqrt{s}=$13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The performance is evaluated in terms of the efficiency for a genuine $τ$ lepton to pass the identification criteria and of the probabilities for jets, electrons, and muons to be misidentified as $τ$ leptons. - Abstract
Several phytoremediation strategies have been undertaken to alleviate cadmium (Cd)-mediated injury to crop yield resulting from agricultural land pollution. In the present study, the potentially beneficial effect of melatonin (Me) was appraised. Therefore, chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) seeds were imbibed for 12 H in distilled water or Me (10 µM) solution. Then, the seeds germinated in the presence or the absence of 200 µM CdCl
2 for 6 days. Seedlings obtained from Me-pretreated seeds exhibited enhanced growth traits, reflected by fresh biomass and length increase. This beneficial effect was associated with a decreased Cd accumulation in seedling tissues (by 46 and 89% in roots and shoots, respectively). Besides, Me efficiently protected the cell membrane integrity of Cd-subjected seedlings. This protective effect was manifested by the decreased lipoxygenase activity and the subsequently reduced accumulation of 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal. Melatonin counteracted the Cd-mediated stimulation of the pro-oxidant NADPH-oxidase (90 and 45% decrease compared to non-pretreated Cd-stressed roots and shoots, respectively) and NADH-oxidase activities (almost 40% decrease compared to non-pretreated roots and shoots), preventing, thus, hydrogen peroxide overaccumulation (50 and 35% lesser than non-pretreated roots and shoots, respectively). Furthermore, Me enhanced the cellular content of pyridine nicotinamide reduced forms [NAD(P)H] and their redox state. This effect was associated with the Me-mediated stimulation of the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and malate dehydrogenase activities, concomitantly with the inhibition of NAD(P)H-consuming activities. These effects were accompanied by the up-regulation of G6PDH gene expression (45% increase in roots) and the down-regulation of the respiratory burst oxidase homolog protein F (RBOHF) gene expression (53% decrease in roots and shoots). Likewise, Me induced an increased activity and gene transcription of the Asada-Halliwell cycle, namely ascorbate peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, and glutathione reductase, concomitantly with a reduction of the glutathione peroxidase activity. This modulating effect led to the restoration of the redox homeostasis of the ascorbate and the glutathione pools. Overall, current results attest that seed pretreatment with Me is effective in Cd stress relief and can be a beneficial crop-protective approach., (© 2023.
