Abstract Separation and identification of molecules and biomolecules such as nucleic acids, proteins, and polysaccharides from complex fluids are known to be important due to unmet needs in various applications. Generally, many different separation techniques, including chromatography, electrophoresis, and magnetophoresis, have been developed to identify the target molecules precisely. However, these techniques are expensive and time consuming. “Lab‐on‐a‐chip” systems with low cost per device, quick analysis capabilities, and minimal sample consumption seem to be ideal candidates for separating particles, cells, blood samples, and molecules. From this perspective, different microfluidic‐based techniques have been extensively developed in the past two decades to separate samples with different origins. In this review, “lab‐on‐a‐chip” methods by passive, active, and hybrid approaches for the separation of biomolecules developed in the past decade are comprehensively discussed. Due to the wide variety in the field, it will be impossible to cover every facet of the subject. Therefore, this review paper covers passive and active methods generally used for biomolecule separation. Then, an investigation of the combined sophisticated methods is highlighted. The spotlight also will be shined on the elegance of separation successes in recent years, and the remainder of the article explores how these permit the development of novel techniques.

Hyperphosphatemic familial tumoral calcinosis (HFTC) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. Topical sodium thiosulfate (STS) and acetazolamide can be a safe and effective treatment for patients who do not respond to conventional therapy for ectopic calcifications. We report the successful treatment of deep soft-tissue calcifications with topical STS and acetazolamide in a boy diagnosed with HFTC due to a novel homozygous mutation of FGF23.

The article presents a study conducted by Baris Anil and other related to synthesis and spectral investigation of some new hetaryl-substituted hydroquinolinone derivatives. Topics discussed include use of Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) in identifiction of compoud; use of mass spectroscopy in determination of molecular formula and; use of X-ray crystallography in determination of stereochemistry of the compound.

Günümüzde sosyal medyanın kullanım alanı giderek artmakta ve her geçen gün daha fazla insan bu mecrayı günlük rutinlerinin birer parçası haline getirmektedir. Kişiler sosyal medyayı artık birer bilgi kaynağı olarak görmekte, satın alma öncesi ve sonrasında sosyal medyadan ürünler hakkında bilgi edinmekte ve dolayısıyla sosyal medya aracılığıyla edindikleri bu bilgilerden etkilenmektedir. Bu anlamda sosyal medyanın tüketicileri satın alma öncesi ve sonrası ne şekilde etkilediğini tespit etmek büyük önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışma kapsamında sosyal medyanın tüketici satın alma öncesi ve sonrası davranışlarına olan etkisini tespit etme amacıyla 697 katılımcıyı içeren bir anket çalışması yürütülmüştür. Çalışma kapsamında sosyal medyada tüketici satın alma öncesi ve sonrası davranışları, kişilerin sosyal medya kullanım yoğunluğu ve sosyal medya bağlarının güçlülüğü olmak üzere iki farklı boyut ile analiz edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Yapılan analizler sonucu tüketicilerin sosyal medyadaki satın alma öncesi ve sonrası davranışları ile, sosyal medya kullanım yoğunluğu ve sosyal medya bağlarının güçlülüğü arasında anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Today, the usage area of social media is gradually increasing and every day more and more people make this channel a part of their daily routines. People now view social media as a source of information, before and after purchasing they obtain information about products from social media and therefore are influenced by the information they obtain through social media. In this sense, it is very crucial to determine how social media affect consumers before and after purchasing. Within the context of this study, a survey has been conducted with 697 participants in order to determine the effect of social media on pre-purchase and post-purchase consumer behavior. Within the scope of the study, the pre-purchase and post-purchase consumer behavior have been tried to be analyzed with two different dimensions as the intensity of social media usage and the strength of social media ties. In consequence of the analyses, it has been found that there is a significant relationship between the pre-purchase and post-purchase behavior of consumers and the strength of social media ties and the intensity of social media usage

A 75-year-old woman presented with a 1-month history of right lower quadrant pain and constipation. Physical examination revealed tenderness to palpation. The patient had no history of inflammatory bowel disease. The colonoscopy displayed marked partial obstruction of the cecum with a large ulcerated area and surrounding friable epithelium in the medial cecal region. Microscopic evaluation of the biopsy specimens revealed an acute ulcer with granulation tissue and overlying fibrinopurulent debris. There was no evidence of granulomatous inflammation or crypt abscesses suggesting inflammatory bowel diseases, except the atypical epithelial cells. Additionally, abdominopelvic tomography showed a suspicious cecal tumor underlying a thickened bowel wall and mesocolic lymph adenopathy. Subsequently, we performed right hemicolectomy due to clinical obstruction. No complications were observed during postoperative follow-up. The pathology result confirmed cecal ulcer with low-grade dysplasia.

Introduction: Dental practice experienced two important evolutions: the development of the concept of evidence-based dentistry (EBD) and the changes in the relationship between dentists and patients. Thus, the practitioner is invited nowadays to give a treatment that reflects the best available evidence.The purpose of this study is to explore knowledge, attitudes, and practices of dentists toward the concept of EBD., Methods: This is a cross sectional study that was conducted among dentists in public and private sector in Morocco. A self-administered questionnaire with 27 questions was delivered to practitioners. The comparison was carried out using the Khi2 test or Fisher's exact test, t -test or the Mann-Whitney. Logistic regression was performed to assess factors associated with the application of EBD. Linear regression was also performed to identify factors that impact knowledge, attitude and practice score., Results: A total of 209 responses was received. 58% of the participants were in the private sector, and 32.7% were academics. The main reported obstacles were the lack of time 44% and lack of training on critical appraisal 60.3%. Knowledge of PICO question formulation and previous EBD training was significantly related to the implementation of EBD in multivariate analysis in logistic regression (OR = 8.163- CI95%: 2.095-31.80 and OR = 12.79- CI95%: 2.868-57 respectively). The total score of surveyed dentists was affected by the knowledge of PICO question formulation and the knowledge of relevant information sources (PubMed/Medline, the Cochrane library) (β = 3.04- CI95%: 0.411-5.66, β = 6.29- CI95%: 2.92-9.66 and β = 8.35- CI95%: 5.89-10.81 respectively)., Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, application of EBD was associated with knowledge of PICO question formulation and previous EBD training. The lack of time was the most common obstacles identified by the participants applying EBD. Introduction: Implant therapy has changed tremendously the management of edentulism, and are a real alternative to conventional prosthesis. However, with the constant increase of the number of peri-implantitis, the question of therapeutic management arises. The first goal of the treatment is to control the infection, which requires periodontal debridement and decontamination of the implant surface. Secondary objectives are to promote bone regeneration and repair of the attachment around the implant., Case Report: The patient was a 24-years-old female in good general health with no history of smoking. Intraoral and radiological examination revealed a peri-implantitis around the implant at the site of tooth 14. The peri-implantitis management involved a non-surgical treatment to reduce inflammation, followed by surgical treatment of the bone defect. This combined decontamination of the implant surface and bone regeneration., Conclusion: The heterogeneity of the surgical protocols does not suggest any true recommendations. Several treatments for periimplantitis are currently implemented. However, we still lack relevant data regarding the effectiveness of these therapies.

PCR assay has been shown to be a promising option for the diagnosis of brucellosis. However, few studies have been performed with field samples in order to evaluate the assay as a diagnostic tool. In this study, routine use of a species-specific PCR assay previously developed for the identification of Brucella cultures was assessed for the detection of Brucella DNA directly from the stomach contents of aborted sheep fetuses. The assay is based on the insertion sequence IS711 in the Brucella chromosome. In the study, during 3 successive lambing seasons (1998-1999, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001) 126 aborted fetus samples each from different flocks and locations were examined. Brucella strains were isolated from 39 (31%) of the samples and all of the strains were identified as Brucella melitensis by biochemical characteristics, agglutination with monospecific A and M sera and PCR. Thirty-seven of 39 B. melitensis isolates were biotyped as biotype 3, and 2 isolates as biotype 1. From 38 of 39 culture positive fetal stomach contents B. melitensis-specific DNA was detected by PCR. PCR was found negative in all of the culture negative samples. Compared with culture, sensitivity and specificity of PCR were determined as 97.4 and 100%, respectively. The results indicate that this PCR procedure has a potential for use in routine diagnosis of sheep brucellosis., (Copyright 2003 Elsevier Science B.V.)
