Abstract

The article discusses the importance and varieties of modern green roofs which help in the growth of biodiversity. By studying various roof types, ecologists can establish a series of design criteria for architects to use, to ensure that green roofs play a role in the biodiversity conservation of brownfield habitats and other low nutrient and well-drained habitats. Structural diversity within the vegetation on the roofs is important. This can be achieved by varying the substrate depth, creating a combination of thin sparse vegetated areas, favored by xeric invertebrates, as well as small hills of taller vegetation, favored by other species. Additionally, applying larger objects, such as dead wood or stones, can create other microhabitats.
