Abstract

The aim of the study was assessment of the influence of stainless steel 316 LVM surface modification on its functional properties. The analyzed steel undergone a surface treatment consisting of the following processes: mechanical polishing, chemical passivation and deposition of Al2O3 layers by Atomic Layer Deposition method. The proposed variant of surface treatment will undoubtedly contribute to improving the functional properties of stainless steel intended for implants. In order to assess functional properties of the steel, electrochemical studies, adhesion (scratch test), wetting angle tests and topography of surface (AFM method) were performed. The obtained results of the study showed clearly that the proposed by the authors way of surface treatment including: mechanical polishing, chemical passivation and deposition of Al2O3 layer by means of the ALD method effectively improves the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

Abstract

In this paper the implementation of piezoelectrics to a state-of-the-art wafer gripper is investigated. The objective is to propose and validate a solution method, which includes a mechanical design and control system, to achieve at least 5% damping for two eigenmodes of a wafer gripper. This objective serves as a 'proof of concept' to show the possibilities of implementing a state-of-the-art damping method to an industrial application, which in turn can be used to dampen different thin structures. The coupling relation between the piezoelectrics and their host structure were used to design the placement of the piezoelectric patches, together with modal analysis data of the a state-of-the-art wafer gripper. This data had been measured through an experimental setup. Active damping has been succesfully implemented onto the wafer gripper where positive position feedback (PPF) is used as a control algorithm to dampen two eigenmodes.

Metasurfaces represent a powerful paradigm of optical engineering that enables one to control the flow of light across material interfaces. We report on a discovery that metallic metasurfaces of a certain type respond differently to spatially coherent and incoherent light, enabling robust speckle-free discrimination between different degrees of coherence. Abstract

Objectives To investigate the effect of ACE inhibitors (ACEi) on the incidence of scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) when given prior to SRC in the prospectively collected cohort from the European Scleroderma Trial and Research Group (EUSTAR). Methods SSc patients without prior SRC and at least one follow-up visit were included and analyzed regarding SRC, arterial hypertension, and medication focusing on antihypertensive medication and glucocorticoids (GC). Results Out of 14,524 patients in the database, we identified 7648 patients with at least one follow-up. In 27,450 person-years (py), 102 patients developed SRC representing an incidence of 3.72 (3.06–4.51) per 1000 py. In a multivariable time-to-event analysis adjusted for age, sex, disease severity, and onset, 88 of 6521 patients developed SRC. The use of ACEi displayed an increased risk for the development of SRC with a hazard ratio (HR) of 2.55 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.65–3.95). Adjusting for arterial hypertension resulted in a HR of 2.04 (95%CI 1.29–3.24). There was no evidence for an interaction of ACEi and arterial hypertension (HR 0.83, 95%CI 0.32–2.13, p = 0.69). Calcium channel blockers (CCB), angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), endothelin receptor antagonists, and GC—mostly in daily dosages below 15 mg of prednisolone—did not influence the hazard for SRC. Conclusions ACEi in SSc patients with concomitant arterial hypertension display an independent risk factor for the development of SRC but are still first choice in SRC treatment. ARBs might be a safe alternative, yet the overall safety of alternative antihypertensive drugs in SSc patients needs to be further studied.

Abstract

Emotions are the effect but also the cause of eating behaviors, including the purchase and consumption of snacks. As snacks become an increasingly prevalent segment of the food industry, their consumption has been linked to rising rates of overweight, obesity, and diet-related diseases. Understanding how emotional valence influences consumer attitudes and behaviors toward snacks is therefore crucial. This study explores the relationship between emotional eating and the propensity to consume unhealthy snacks, both sweet and salty. A survey of 707 representative participants revealed distinct emotional patterns in snack consumption, with choices significantly influenced by consumers' emotional states and personal preferences. Furthermore, individuals who frequently opted for unhealthy snacks typically exhibited poorer health and financial profiles.

Abstract

In this study, the structural, luminescence and photoconversion properties of novel composite color converters based on Tb1.5Gd1.5Al5O12:Ce (TGAG:Ce) single crystalline films, grown by the liquid phase epitaxy method onto Y3Al5O12:Ce (YAG:Ce) single crystal substrates, are investigated. The luminescence and chromaticity properties for the set of TGAG:Ce SCF/YAG:Ce composite color converters, including color coordinates, color rendering index (CRI), and luminous efficacy, were studied by varying the thickness of the TGAG:Ce film in the 12–48 μm range and the Ce3+ concentration in the 0.1–0.5% range in YAG:Ce substrates. Such combination of different YAG:Ce substrates with various TGAG:Ce films enables tuning the white light tones from cold white (correlated color temperature (CCT) > 6000 K) to neutral white (6000 K > CCT > 3300 K). The theoretical white light color coordinates on the chromaticity diagram were almost achieved for TGAG:Ce film/YAG:Ce (0.5 mm) crystal converters with a film thickness between 19 and 25 μm under 465 nm LED excitation, with the corresponding CRI values in the 79–74 range. The developed composite color converters allow the problem of a high color temperature and low color rendering index of conventional WLEDs based on conventional YAG:Ce phosphor converters to be solved.
