- Abstract
During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the COVIDiSTRESS Consortium launched an open-access global survey to understand and improve individuals’ experiences related to the crisis. A year later, we extended this line of research by launching a new survey to address the dynamic landscape of the pandemic. This survey was released with the goal of addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion by working with over 150 researchers across the globe who collected data in 48 languages and dialects across 137 countries. The resulting cleaned dataset described here includes 15,740 of over 20,000 responses. The dataset allows cross-cultural study of psychological wellbeing and behaviours a year into the pandemic. It includes measures of stress, resilience, vaccine attitudes, trust in government and scientists, compliance, and information acquisition and misperceptions regarding COVID-19. Open-access raw and cleaned datasets with computed scores are available. Just as our initial COVIDiSTRESS dataset has facilitated government policy decisions regarding health crises, this dataset can be used by researchers and policy makers to inform research, decisions, and policy.

- Abstract
In a now-classic study by Srull and Wyer (1979), people who were exposed to phrases with hostile content subsequently judged a man as being more hostile. And this “hostile priming effect” has had a significant influence on the field of social cognition over the subsequent decades. However, a recent multi-lab collaborative study (McCarthy et al., 2018) that closely followed the methods described by Srull and Wyer (1979) found a hostile priming effect that was nearly zero, which casts doubt on whether these methods reliably produce an effect. To address some limitations with McCarthy et al. (2018), the current multi-site collaborative study included data collected from 29 labs. Each lab conducted a close replication (total N = 2,123) and a conceptual replication (total N = 2,579) of Srull and Wyer's methods. The hostile priming effect for both the close replication (d = 0.09, 95% CI [-0.04, 0.22], z = 1.34, p =.16) and the conceptual replication (d = 0.05, 95% CI [-0.04, 0.15], z = 1.15, p =.58) were not significantly different from zero and, if the true effects are non-zero, were smaller than what most labs could feasibly and routinely detect. Despite our best efforts to produce favorable conditions for the effect to emerge, we did not detect a hostile priming effect. We suggest that researchers should not invest more resources into trying to detect a hostile priming effect using methods like those described in Srull and Wyer (1979).

- Abstract
This N = 173,426 social science dataset was collected through the collaborative COVIDiSTRESS Global Survey – an open science effort to improve understanding of the human experiences of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic between 30th March and 30th May, 2020. The dataset allows a cross-cultural study of psychological and behavioural responses to the Coronavirus pandemic and associated government measures like cancellation of public functions and stay at home orders implemented in many countries. The dataset contains demographic background variables as well as measures of Asian Disease Problem, perceived stress (PSS-10), availability of social provisions (SPS-10), trust in various authorities, trust in governmental measures to contain the virus (OECD trust), personality traits (BFF-15), information behaviours, agreement with the level of government intervention, and compliance with preventive measures, along with a rich pool of exploratory variables and written experiences. A global consortium from 39 countries and regions worked together to build and translate a survey with variables of shared interests, and recruited participants in 47 languages and dialects. Raw plus cleaned data and dynamic visualizations are available.

13. Regulatory Focus as a Mediator of the Influence of Initiating Structure and Servant Leadership on Employee Behavior
- Author

Neubert, Mitchell J., Kacmar, K. Michele, and Carlson, Dawn S.
- Abstract
In this research, the authors test a model in which the regulatory focus of employees at work mediates the influence of leadership on employee behavior. In a nationally representative sample of 250 workers who responded over 2 time periods, prevention focus mediated the relationship of initiating structure to in-role performance and deviant behavior, whereas promotion focus mediated the relationship of servant leadership to helping and creative behavior. The results indicate that even though initiating structure and servant leadership share some variance in explaining other variables, each leadership style incrementally predicts disparate outcomes after controlling for the other style and dispositional tendencies. A new regulatory focus scale, the Work Regulatory Focus (WRF) Scale, also was developed and initially validated for this study. Implications for the results and the WRF Scale are discussed. Dmitrii Dubrov, of the G.T.F.C., was supported by the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University) Basic Research Program. This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time periods and 57% emerged in other geographies. Overall, only limited empirical evidence emerged for context sensitivity. In a forecasting survey, independent scientists were able to anticipate which effects would find support in tests in new samples. Publisher PDF

Carlson, Dawn S., Kacmar, K. Michele, and Wayne, Julie Holliday
- Abstract
Based on current conceptualizations of enrichment, or the positive side of the work-family interface, a multi-dimensional measure of work-family enrichment is developed and validated using five samples. The final 18 item measure consists of three dimensions from the work to family direction (development, affect, and capital) and three dimensions from the family to work direction (development, affect, and efficiency). The validity of the scale was established by assessing the content adequacy, dimensionality, reliability, factor structure invariance, convergent validity, divergent validity, and its relationship to work and family correlates.

16. Situational and Dispositional Factors as Antecedents of Ingratiatory Behaviors in Organizational Settings

Kacmar, K. Michele, Carlson, Dawn S., and Bratton, Virginia K.
- Abstract
This study examined both situational and dispositional antecedents of four ingratiatory behaviors: other-enhancing, opinion conformity, favor rendering, and self-promotion. The two situational variables (i.e., role ambiguity and leader-member exchange) and the four dispositional variables (i.e., self-esteem, need for power, job involvement, and shyness) were considered as antecedents to each of the ingratiatory behaviors. Results from a sample of 136 full-time employees suggested that each of the ingratiatory behaviors had a unique set of antecedents and that the dispositional variables explained significant additional variance beyond the variance explained by the situational variables.

- Abstract
People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as applying makeup or using other cosmetics, hair grooming, clothing style, caring for body hygiene, and exercising or following a specific diet for the specific purpose of improving ones physical attractiveness, are universal. Indeed, 99% of participants reported spending >10 min a day performing beauty-enhancing behaviors. The results largely support evolutionary hypotheses: more time was spent enhancing beauty by women (almost 4 h a day, on average) than by men (3.6 h a day), by the youngest participants (and contrary to predictions, also the oldest), by those with a relatively more severe history of infectious diseases, and by participants currently dating compared to those in established relationships. The strongest predictor of attractiveness-enhancing behaviors was social media usage. Other predictors, in order of effect size, included adhering to traditional gender roles, residing in countries with less gender equality, considering oneself as highly attractive or, conversely, highly unattractive, TV watching time, higher socioeconomic status, right-wing political beliefs, a lower level of education, and personal individualistic attitudes. This study provides novel insight into universal beauty-enhancing behaviors by unifying evolutionary theory with several other complement

- Abstract
Finding communication strategies that effectively motivate social distancing continues to be a global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This crosscountry, preregistered experiment (n = 25,718 from 89 countries) tested hypotheses concerning generalizable positive and negative outcomes of social distancing messages that promoted personal agency and reflective choices (i.e., an autonomy-supportive message) or were restrictive and shaming (i.e., a controlling message) compared with no message at all. Results partially supported experimental hypotheses in that the controlling message increased controlled motivation (a poorly internalized form of motivation relying on shame, guilt, and fear of social consequences) relative to no message. On the other hand, the autonomy-supportive message lowered feelings of defiance compared with the controlling message, but the controlling message did not differ from receiving no message at all. Unexpectedly, messages did not influence autonomous motivation (a highly internalized form of motivation relying on one's core values) or behavioral intentions. Results supported hypothesized associations between people's existing autonomous and controlled motivations and self-reported behavioral intentions to engage in social distancing. Controlled motivation was associated with more defiance and less long-term behavioral intention to engage in social distancing, whereas autonomous motivation was associated with less defiance and more short- and long-term intentions to social distance. Overall, this work highlights the potential harm of using shaming and pressuring language in public health communication, with implications for the current and future global health challenges.

- Abstract
Time-, strain-, and behavior-based dimensions of work interference with family and family interference with work were measured using 1,211 subjects. An 18-item scale with 6 subscales was validated. It depicts how separate work-family conflict dimensions relate to attitudes and behaviors. (SK)

- Abstract
Results of two studies of user design preferences for link markers--entities that signify pathways to additional information in hypermedia information systems--indicate that, in general, link markers that employ color and bound objects are the most effective in communicating the existence and extent of links and are most preferred by users. However, user expertise and node content played a significant role. (Author/AEF)

- Abstract
The dimensionality of the Measure of Ingratiatory Behaviors in Organizational Settings (MIBOS) (K. Kumar and M. Beyerlein, 1991) was studied with data from 203 state government employees. Results do not confirm the factor solution proposed by the measure's creators. Suggestions are offered to improve the psychometric properties of the MIBOS scale. (SLD)

Tearful crying is a ubiquitous and likely uniquely human phenomenon. Scholars have argued that emotional tears serve an attachment function: Tears are thought to act as a social glue by evoking social support intentions. Initial experimental studies supported this proposition across several methodologies, but these were conducted almost exclusively on participants from North America and Europe, resulting in limited generalizability. This project examined the tears-social support intentions effect and possible mediating and moderating variables in a fully pre-registered study across 7007 participants (24,886 ratings) and 41 countries spanning all populated continents. Participants were presented with four pictures out of 100 possible targets with or without digitally added tears. We confirmed the main prediction that seeing a tearful individual elicits the intention to support, d = 0.49 [0.43, 0.55]. Our data suggest that this effect could be mediated by perceiving the crying target as warmer and more helpless, feeling more connected, as well as feeling more empathic concern for the crier, but not by an increase in personal distress of the observer. The effect was moderated by the situational valence, identifying the target as part of one's group, and trait empathic concern. A neutral situation, high trait empathic concern, and low identification increased the effect. We observed high heterogeneity across countries that was, via split-half validation, best explained by country-level GDP per capita and subjective well-being with stronger effects for higher-scoring countries. These findings suggest that tears can function as social glue, providing one possible explanation why emotional crying persists into adulthood.

- Abstract
Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov's valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov's methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov's original analysis strategy, the valence-dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence-dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution. - Abstract
The COVIDiSTRESS global survey collects data on early human responses to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic from 173 429 respondents in 48 countries. The open science study was co-designed by an international consortium of researchers to investigate how psychological responses differ across countries and cultures, and how this has impacted behaviour, coping and trust in government efforts to slow the spread of the virus. Starting in March 2020, COVIDiSTRESS leveraged the convenience of unpaid online recruitment to generate public data. The objective of the present analysis is to understand relationships between psychological responses in the early months of global coronavirus restrictions and help understand how different government measures succeed or fail in changing public behaviour. There were variations between and within countries. Although Western Europeans registered as more concerned over COVID-19, more stressed, and having slightly more trust in the governments' efforts, there was no clear geographical pattern in compliance with behavioural measures. Detailed plots illustrating between-countries differences are provided. Using both traditional and Bayesian analyses, we found that individuals who worried about getting sick worked harder to protect themselves and others. However, concern about the coronavirus itself did not account for all of the variances in experienced stress during the early months of COVID-19 restrictions. More alarmingly, such stress was associated with less compliance. Further, those most concerned over the coronavirus trusted in government measures primarily where policies were strict. While concern over a disease is a source of mental distress, other factors including strictness of protective measures, social support and personal lockdown conditions must also be taken into consideration to fully appreciate the psychological impact of COVID-19 and to understand why some people fail to follow behavioural guidelines intended to protect themselv

- Abstract
Background:Despite the many roles spoken language interpreters play, there is little evidence exploring the assumed roles and their corresponding emotional impact when working with refugees in health and human services. Methods:Using Constructivist Grounded Theory, our team explored the experiences of 11 interpreters who had undergone migration to the United States to understand the roles they identify with and how those roles intersect with their emotional responses to clients’ stories, trauma, and shared experiences.Findings:Our findings indicate that interpreters embody diverse roles and exhibit a spectrum of emotional responses, including being a “voice,” a “cultural broker,” an “advocate,” and “being human.” These roles were linked to emotional responses ranging from workplace stress, empathy, and emotional toll to growth and satisfaction. Conclusions:Our field needs to address interpreters’ emotional needs and advocate for work environments that value inclusivity and the recognition of interpreters as vital members of the therapeutic alliance.

Family caregivers, who are managing the demands of work while simultaneously giving care to an adult family member, are a growing segment of the workforce. The current paper explores the struggle and joys of family caregiving employees, who manage work demands while simultaneously caring for an adult family member. We developed and tested a theoretical model of 311 family caregivers in the U.S. workforce that considered the simultaneous demands (burdens) and resources (gains) paths using the theoretical framework of the work-home resources model (ten Brummelhuis & Bakker, 2012). Further, we consider the role that these play as the family domain spilled over into the work domain and had both behavioral and affective outcomes. We found that family caregiving operated on simultaneous separate paths, confirming the bittersweet nature of the phenomenon. Through a demands path we found caregiving burdens contributed to experiences of family-work conflict and required greater work concessions (job and career) while also reducing job satisfaction. At the same time, through a resources path we found caregiving gains contributed to experiences of family-work enrichment and contributed to satisfaction (job and life) but did not reduce the need for work concessions. As such, considering caregiving burdens and gains simultaneously helps us to understand that, although caregiving results in more work concessions, it also improves employees' overall satisfaction. • The role of family caregiving with full time employees in today's work environment. • Caregiving demands contribute to job and career concessions through family-work conflict. • Caregiving gains contribute to job and life satisfaction through family-work enrichment. • Scale development of work and career concessions in addition to model testing. • Family caregiving burdens and gains work simultaneously. LARGEMOUTH bass ,FISH stocking ,WATERSHEDS ,FISHING ,FRESHWATER fishes - Abstract
The Largemouth Bass (LMB) Micropterus salmoides is one of the most popular freshwater sport fish in the United States, and managers in southeastern states have stocked its subspecies, the Florida Bass (FLB) M. salmoides floridanus, outside of the subspecies' natural range to increase the size structure of existing LMB populations. In Tennessee, fisheries for LMB are concentrated in reservoirs of the Cumberland and Tennessee River systems; however, FLB stockings have to date been restricted to two reservoirs of the Tennessee River and have varied significantly in extent and duration. We quantified levels of genetic admixture between FLB and LMB by using 38 species‐diagnostic single‐nucleotide polymorphisms for 979 fish sampled from 14 reservoirs within the Cumberland and Tennessee River systems. We tested for differences in genetic admixture across river systems and evaluated the relative importance of fish stockings in explaining observed levels of genetic admixture. Levels of admixture and associated variation were higher in Tennessee River reservoirs (average percentage of FLB alleles: range = 6.3–30.4%) than in Cumberland River reservoirs (range = 5.7–13.4%), but admixture was not solely related to stocking rates. The highest levels of FLB introgression were detected in Chickamauga Reservoir, the most extensively stocked reservoir in the state. Linear models identified fish stocked as a significant overall predictor of admixture, but we also observed stocked and unstocked reservoirs with similar levels of admixture, suggesting that factors other than stocking influence population genetics. Our statewide assessment of reservoir‐level patterns of hybridization among black bass was performed prior to the recent expansion of FLB stocking efforts in Tennessee and thus represents a baseline for evaluation of future stocking. ANAEROBIC bacteria ,HYPOXEMIA ,REACTIVE oxygen species ,GENE expression ,PHENOTYPES - Abstract
The center of tumors, stem cell niches and mucosal surfaces all represent areas of the body that are reported to be anoxic. However, long-term study of anoxic cell physiology is hindered by the lack of a sustainable method permitting cell cultivation in the complete absence of oxygen. A novel methodology was developed that enabled anoxic cell cultivation (17d maximum time tested) and cell passage. In the absence of oxygen, cell morphology is significantly altered. All cells tested exhibited morphologic changes, i.e. , a combination of tethered (monolayer-like) and runagate (suspension-like) morphologies. Both morphologies replicated (Vero and HeLa cells tested) and could be passaged anaerobically. In the absence of exogenous oxygen, anoxic cells produced reactive oxygen species (ROS). Anaerobic runagate HeLa and Vero cells increased ROS production from day 3 to day 10 by 2- and 3-fold, respectively. In contrast, anoxic tethered HeLa and Vero cells either showed no significant change in ROS production between days 3 and 10 or exhibited a 3-fold decrease in ROS, respectively. Detection of ROS was inversely related to detection of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α ( HIF1 ) mRNA and HIF-1 protein expression which cycled over a 10-day period. This methodology has broad applications for the study of tumor and stem cell physiology as well as gastrointestinal cell-microbiome interactions. In addition, sustainable anaerobic cell culture may lead to the identification of novel pathways and targets for chemotherapeutic drug development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PSYCHOLOGICAL disengagement ,SELF-discrepancy theory ,PSYCHOLOGY ,COGNITIVE ability ,MORAL attitudes - Abstract
Moral disengagement (MD) has recently received a fair bit of attention in the management literature. Although the extant literature has contributed significantly to our understanding of MD--specifically identifying "why" individuals morally disengage--we know little about what individuals experience after they morally disengage and commit an unethical act. The present paper integrates MD and self-discrepancy theory (SDT) to offer a comprehensive examination of the process by which individuals disengage from their moral standards in order to engage in unethical behavior and the mechanisms they use to alleviate the negative cognitive discomfort that ensues post-unethical act. This paper takes us beyond the unethical act and begins to explore the use of moral disengagement as a multi-stage, multi-functional regulatory and coping mechanism that not only allows individuals to engage in unethical behavior, but also manage the self-condemnation arising from felt discrepancy. It thereby allows practitioners and management scholars to explore additional steps to prevent unethical conduct in organizations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

REGULATORY focus theory ,EMPLOYEE motivation - Abstract
Using regulatory focus theory as the theoretical foundation, this study examined the effects of promotion focus and prevention focus on work engagement. Perceived self-value was examined as a moderator of these relationships. Using a snowball sample of 282 participants, results indicated a positive relationship between both promotion and prevention focus with work engagement. Results also indicated support for the moderating effect of perceived self-value on the prevention focus-work en8a8ement relationship but notforthe promotion focus-work engagement relationship. Implications for managers and entrepreneurs are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
