Being one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide and their resistance to conventional treatment methods, made gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) one of the hot topics in medical research areas in the past decade. To investigate molecular alterations underlying the tumor is of great importance to be able to develop new, targeted treatment options. In this study, GIST samples obtained from 40 Turkish patients were analyzed for actionable epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations that are related to treatment regimes in non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to understand whether EGFR expression is altered in GISTs. Established alterations in EGFR can make the use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors possible, which are currently used in cancer therapy, especially in NSCLC. Our results indicated that EGFR mutations are rare in GISTs. Further research is needed to sequence whole coding regions of the gene to investigate new actionable mutations in EGFR in an increased sample size.

OBJECTIVE: Chondrosarcomas are malignant tumors of chondrocytes that affect bones and joints, and it represents the third most common type of primary bone tumors. Chondrosarcoma is difficult to treat because it is relatively resistant to both chemotherapy and radiation. Thus, surgery remains the best available treatment. It is important to find new diagnostic markers and improve treatment options. BACKGROUND: miRNAs are small non-coding transcripts (19-25 nucleotides) that regulate gene expression via targeting complementary sequences within messenger RNAs (mRNAs). miRNAs have been shown to be involved in regulation of many biochemical pathways. Dysregulated expression of many miRNAs has also been associated with multiple human diseases, such as cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 18 surgical chondrosarcoma specimens were obtained from patients. RNA extractions were performed from decalcified paraffin embedded tissues. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression levels of miR-181a and miR-371b in patients with chondrosarcoma by using RT-PCR and to evaluate the relationship between these miRNAs and chondrosarcoma. RESULTS: miR-181a was found to be upregulated in chondrosarcoma specimens whereas no significant alteration was found for miR371b expression. CONCLUSIONS: It has been proposed that miRNA expression studies might be used as diagnostic, prognostic marker in cancer. miRNA expression data produced in our study may contribute future chondrosarcoma diagnosis and therapy. We investigated the effects of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) on the recovery of sciatic nerve injuries in rats. Sprague Dawley rats were randomized to two groups: ALCAR treated (for 14 days) and control. Each group was divided into three subgroups: distal transection, proximal transection, and grafted. Distal latencies, amplitudes, and motor nerve conduction velocities were measured. In the third month, biopsies were taken and examined under light microscopy. Electrophysiological measurements demonstrated that regeneration occurred earlier and was better in the ALCAR group, particularly in the distal transection subgroup. Better results were obtained in the distal transection subgroup in terms of axonal regeneration compared with the proximal transection and grafted subgroups because the regenerating segment was shorter. ALCAR enhanced the quality of neural recovery at the different levels and in different types of repair, and led to a decline in nerve death. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Context/Objective. The standard approach is to perform repeat FNAB (rFNAB) in thyroid nodules with nondiagnostic (ND) / insufficient (UNS) cytology. However, due to the nature of these nodules, recurrent FNABs may also be insufficient. Therefore, by comparing the clinicalradiological- pathological parameters of nodules with a definite diagnosis of excision, we questioned the possibility of patient management without rFNAB. Methods. Clinical-radiological parameters of 275 nodules belonging to 264 patients in the ND/UNS aspiration group with definite pathological diagnosis after surgery were determined. Under the guidance of these parameters, those with and without rFNAB were compared. Results. The incidence of malignancy was found to be significantly higher in nodules without rFNAB compared to nodules with rFNAB (p = 0.036). In addition, the incidence of malignancy in BC-1 nodules without rFNAB was significantly higher than in nodules with rFNAB result also BC-1 (p = 0.009). In all cases, nodule size smaller than 10 mm and border irregularity were found to be statistically significant for malignancy (p <0.020, p <0.002). When looking at the distribution of rFNAB results, a significant correlation was observed with female gender, solid component, hypoechogenicity, border irregularity and halo loss around the nodule in patients with BC-4,5,6 cytology results (respectively, 0.005 / 0.031 / 0.001 / 0.012 / 0.004). Conclusion. rFNAB did not show the expected effect in ND / UNS nodules. We recommend direct surgical excision without rFNAB for nodules with border irregularity, solid structure, halo loss and hypoechogenicity, which should be considered more important in female patients. Objectives: Follicular neoplasm/suspected follicular neoplasm (FN/FNS) Bethesda Category (BC)-4 group cases are known as the gray zone. Nodules diagnosed in cytology are excised. However, very few of these nodules are malignant. Our aim is to investigate the usability of clinical-radiological-pathological parameters to reduce unnecessary surgery. In addition, we questioned the benefit of repeating fine-needle aspiration biopsy (rFNAB) in these nodules, which is not recommended, but performed for clinical or patient-related reasons., Methods: The files of all thyroid FNAB patients conducted in our institution between January 2014 and September 2020 were scanned in the database. In our study, 185 (5.1%) nodules with cytology results of which were classified as FN/FNS were identified among 3624 nodules that were applied FNAB during this period. Twenty-eight patients were excluded from the study group. 157 nodules belonging to 157 patients between the ages of 21 and 82 years who were operated and met the study criteria were identified from patients with these nodules. The files of all patients were scanned and the results of age, gender, ultrasonographic nodule characteristics, FNAB repeat, type of surgery, and postoperative pathology were recorded. All data were analyzed by comparing them with nodule features. SPSS 15.0 for Windows program was used for statistical analysis., Results: A significant correlation was found between the incidence of malignancy and male gender and hypervascularization (p=0.017 and p=0.002, respectively). Malignancy was less in nodules larger than 2 cm (p=0.014). There was no relationship between other clinical and radiological features and malignancy. In 29 nodules with rFNAB, a significant correlation was found between malignancy and advanced age (52.9-years-old), presence of nodules smaller than 2 cm and hypervascularization (p=0.047, p=0.047, and p=0.030, respectively)., Conclusion: We recommend careful review of patients with hypervascular, hypoechogenic, and microcalcific BC-4 nodules (male gender and older patients at greater risk). Objectives: This study aims to assess the diagnostic accuracy of cytology by comparing the results of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and histopathologic examination., Material and Methods: A 4-year retrospective study design was conducted on FNAC samples from the lymph nodes of patients in our hospital between January 2015 and December 2018. The cytopathological diagnoses were compared with the histopathological results of the same excised lymph nodes. Diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy rate were calculated., Results: A total of 392 lymph nodes were aspirated during the study period. Cytologic analysis of the lymph nodes revealed the following: Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia, 239 (61%); metastatic, 61 (15.6%); granulomatous lymphadenitis, 24 (6.1%); suspicious, 24 (6.1%); pyogenic abscess, 10 (2.6%); necrosis, 4 (1%); non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 2 (0.5%); and non-diagnostic, 28 (7.1%). Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on 26 (6.6%) cases to the cell block samples. Histopathological correlation was available in 73 (18.7%) cases. The overall diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of FNAC of lymph nodes were 87.9%, 100%, 100%, and 89.7%, respectively. The overall diagnostic accuracy was 94.1%. In case of malignancies, the histopathological correlation was 100%. Of four cases with false negative, three were low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma and one was granulocytic sarcoma., Conclusion: FNAC of lymph nodes is a safe, easy, cheap, quick diagnostic tool and reduces the need for diagnostic excisional biopsy in many patients. Cytological diagnosis can be supported with immunohistochemical analysis of cell block samples. Although Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) may arise from any bone, flat bones (skull, ribs, scapula, clavicle, and mandible) are more commonly involved.The overall reported incidence of scapular involvement by LCH is nearly 3% in the literature. Intra-lesional corticosteroid injection can be given for lesions that cause pain or postural deformity. We, herein, report a 26-year male with scapular LCH who was suffering from right shoulder pain and right arm weakness. The patient received intra-lesional methylprednisolone under CT-guidance for treatment. On follow-up imaging, almost total regression was observed. We suggest that percutaneous CT-guided intra-lesional steroid injection is an efficient method for the treatment of LCH located in bone. Objectives: Central nervous system (CNS) tumors constitute 1.3% of all cancers in adults and are the seventh leading cause of death in developed countries. CNS tumors are very soft and have a gelatin-like texture. Smear technique is a very simple and fast method for the diagnosis of brain tumors., Methods: In this study, we evaluated the imprint and squash cytology of 100 cases sent to the pathology clinic. The sections of the paraffin blocks were prepared after the operation in the neurosurgery clinic of the SBU Hamidiye Şişli Efal Training and Research Hospital. The accuracy rate was 90% in the differential diagnosis of malignant tumors from the benign ones., Conclusion: Cytological samples were taken from 100 cases of intracranial tumors that were operated in the neurosurgery clinic of Şişli Etfal Hospital, and the paraffin sections prepared from the biopsy materials were examined. The cases with misdiagnosis were usually differentiated from solid-hard tumors, epithelial-grade cystic structures, and medulloblastoma localized in the posterior fossa, medulloblastoma and ependymoma. Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NET) are classified according to tumor grade. Ki-67 and mitotic count are the two determinants of this classification. Therefore, Ki-67 scoring becomes very important in classifying the patients accurately. Eye-balling, counting of cells through the microscope, automated image analysis systems, and manual counting of printed image are the four major scoring methods in use. The aim of this study is to show the agreement between monitor-image method (MIM) and printout-image method (PIM) of Ki-67 scoring. In our study, 120 GEP-NETs from 85 patients diagnosed between January 2005 and July 2017 were evaluated. Thirty-seven cases with either polypectomy or resection material were selected. Seven different scoring methods using either a monitor-image or a printout-image were applied for Ki-67 scoring. They are as follows: whole-PIM, 1/9-PIM, whole-MIM, 1/4-MIM, 1/6-MIM, 1/9-MIM, and 1/12-MIM. In the comparison of Ki-67 scoring methods, intraclass correlation coefficients ranging from 0.951 to 0.999 were found. The Bland-Altman analysis showed near-perfect agreement between whole-MIM and whole-PIM as well as 1/9-MIM and 1/9-PIM. The level of agreements among the other methods were sufficient too, but there was a relative decrease in the level of agreement as the area of counting becomes smaller. The average application time decreased from 373.7 to 41.7 s gradually as the scoring area becomes smaller. Our study shows that there is a remarkable agreement between the MIM and PIM used in Ki-67 scoring.

Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) has been stratified into low- and high-risk according to their propensity for local recurrence. Risk factors for recurrence include histologic subtype, anatomic location (i.e. H-zone of the face), horizontal diameter, and patient health status., Objective: To assess if favorable (superficial, nodular, adenoid and trabecular) and unfavorable (infiltrative, morpheaform, micronodular, metatypical, basosquamous) histopathological subtypes of BCC do correlate with anatomic location on the face (facial high risk versus non-high risk zones)., Methods: Histopathological specimens of all facial BCCs, which were histopathologically diagnosed in the Pathology Department of Şişli Etfal Training Hospital, between the years 2008 and 2014 were retrospectively studied. Histopathological aggressive and non-aggressive subtypes as well as the presence of ulceration were correlated with facial high-risk (i.e. H-zone) and low risk anatomical locations., Results: Of 184 BCC of unfavorable subtypes, 101 cases were identified in facial high-risk anatomical region (H-zone) compared to 83 cases at non H-zone (P = 0.553). On the other hand the ulceration rate was significantly higher for unfavorable histological subtypes than in the favorable histopathological subtype group (P = 0.042). Regarding anatomic site, ulceration frequency was not significantly different for the H-versus non-high risk zones (P = 0.335)., Conclusions: A correlation of unfavorable histopathological subtype of BCC and high-risk anatomical location (i.e. H-zone) was not observed in our study. Our results however confirmed a significantly higher rate of ulceration in the subgroup of aggressive histopathological BCC forms. Thus, factors other than histopathological subtype (such as narrow excision margin related to difficult surgical technique in H-zone, microcirculation, vasculature and host inflammatory response) may be responsible for the high recurrence rate in facial H-zone-located BCCs.

Background: Solid-pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPPN) of the pancreas is a distinctive tumor of low malignant potential with a predilection for female patients in the second and third decades of life. We studied nine cases of SPPN of the pancreas and reviewed the literature concerning these uncommon tumors., Materials and Methods: A total of 7 cases of SPPN located in the tail of the pancreas and two located in the head of the pancreas were presented. Distal pancreatectomy in three patients and distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy in two patients Whipple's operation in four patients were performed. Histological diagnosis was made by performing hematoxylin-eosin and periodic acid-Schiff staining, immunohistochemical staining. Follow-up of the patients was between 2 months and 12 years., Results: Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were found as equivocal for diagnosis. Mass containing cystic and solid areas were not characteristic but raised suspicion of SPPN. Pathologic examination showed SPPN in all patients. No metastasis or recurrence was detected during follow-up., Conclusions: Solid-pseudopapillary neoplasm is a relatively rare tumor, and patients tend to survive for a long period. Preoperative imaging is not characteristic. Pathologic examination is the mainstay in the diagnosis. Complete surgical removal is the best choice of treatment.

Purpose: The etiology of nasal septal perforations involves iatrogenic, traumatic, inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, and caustic causes. To ensure successful closure, an appropriate interpositional graft material should be selected, and this graft material should be covered with healthy tissue., Materials and Methods: The study included 18 New Zealand white rabbits weighing 2 to 2.5 kg. Nasal septal perforations were created in group 1. After the creation of defects in group 2, repair was performed with cartilage graft and bilateral mucoperichondrial advancement flaps. After septal nasal perforations in group 3, the defect was covered with fingernail and bilateral mucoperichondrial flaps., Results: At week 12, the rabbits were sacrificed. The septum site that had been repaired with fingernail was intact. No nail exposition, wound site decomposition, or re-perforation was observed. No findings of a breach of the structural integrity of the fingernails or disintegration were encountered., Conclusion: Fingernails can be used as an interpositional graft material in place of cartilage in eligible cases for the repair of nasal septal perforations. Background: The natural history of AA amyloidosis is typically progressive, leading to multiple organ failure and death. We analyzed the etiology as well as clinical and laboratory features of patients with biopsy-proven AA amyloidosis and evaluated the ultimate outcome., Methods: Seventy-three patients (24 female; mean age 41.85±15.89 years) were analyzed retrospectively. Demographic, clinical and laboratory features were studied and the outcome was assessed., Results: Familial Mediterranean Fever and tuberculosis were the most frequent causes of amyloidosis. Mean serum creatinine and proteinuria at diagnosis were 4.65±4.89 mg/dl and 8.04±6.09 g/day, respectively; and stage I, II, III, IV and V renal disease were present in 19.2%, 13.7%, 16.4%, 11%, and 39.7% of the patients, respectively. ESRD developed in 16 patients during the follow-up period. All of the ESRD patients started a dialysis programme. Thirty patients (41%) died during the follow-up period; median patient survival was 35.9±6.12 months. Old age, tuberculosis etiology, advanced renal disease and low serum albumin levels were associated with a worse prognosis. Serum albumin was a predictor of mortality in logistic regression analysis., Conclusion: The ultimate outcome of the patients with AA amyloidosis is poor, possibly due to the late referral to the nephrology clinics. Aim: To determine the immunohistochemical expression of ErbB2 in adamantinomatous craniopharyngiomas (ACP) and to assess its relationship with nuclear expression of β-catenin in surgically resected human ACP tissue sections and to estimate whether these tumors could be candidates for anti-ErbB2 therapy., Material and Methods: The ErbB2 and β-catenin immunostaining was performed on paraffin embedded tissue sections of 20 ACP using avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method. ErbB2 immunoreactivity was interpreted according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology/ College of American Pathologists criterions for breast carcinoma., Results: Foci of nuclear reactivity for β-catenin was observed in all ACP tissue specimens mainly concentrated in whorl like arrays of the epithelial cells. Two (10%) of the cases were score 3+ for ErbB2 as demonstrated by strong complete membrane staining. However, the localization of 3+ ErbB2 cells was different from those with nuclear β-catenin immunoreactivity., Conclusion: Our preliminary data demonstrate score 3+ staining for ErbB2 in 10% of ACP and different localization of 3+ ErbB2 cells and cells with nuclear β-catenin immunoreactivity. However, because of the small number of cases, further studies with larger samples should be conducted to verify and validate our preliminary data and to determine the effect of ErbB2 protein in ACP cell growth, survival and differentiation.

Granular cell tumor is a rare benign soft-tissue neoplasm, usually appearing in the tongue, the oral cavity and subcutaneous tissue. Examples of granular cell tumor of breast are encountered in 30-50-year-old women. Herein, we report ultrasonographic and mammographic imaging findings of a 59 years old woman presented with a painless palpable mass, which was diagnosed as granular cell tumor on histopathological analysis.

Amyloidosis results from extracellular deposition of a fibrillary protein in various organs, and renal biopsy is the best, but a complicated tool for diagnosis. Therefore, alternative biopsy sites have been proposed with varying degrees of sensitivity. We aimed to find the most appropriate biopsy site in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in whom renal biopsy is contraindicated or unavailable. 42 patients (29 male; mean age 46 ± 16 y) with CKD in whom amyloidosis was suspected as the underlying etiology on clinical grounds, but renal biopsy was not available (Group I), and 36 patients (25 male; mean age 40 ± 16 y) with CKD in whom renal biopsy revealed AA-amyloidosis (Group II) were investigated. Upper and lower gastrointestinal tract (GIT) endoscopies were performed and multiple biopsies from gingiva, esophagus, antrum, duodenum and rectum were obtained. In Group I, no amyloidosis was detected in gingival and GIT biopsies among 13 patients. In the remaining 29 patients AA-amyloidosis was detected in various sites with the following frequencies: duodenum 100%, rectum 83%, antrum 79%, esophagus 44% and gingiva 29%. In Group II, frequency of amyloid deposition was 97% in duodenum, 76% each in antrum and rectum, 59% in esophagus and 32% in gingival mucosa. In conclusion, duodenal biopsy is sensitive for diagnosing amyloidosis in CKD patients, and highly correlates with renal amyloidosis.

Background: Our objective was to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of intraperitoneally administered vitamin E and human amniotic membrane in preventing postoperative intraperitoneal adhesion formation., Material and Methods: 75 Wistar-albino rats were separated into 5 groups: Group 1 (control), Group 2 (intraperitoneal olive oil, the diluent of vitamin E), Group 3 (Intraperitoneal vitamin E diluted in olive oil), Group 4 (Amniotic membrane group) and Group 5 (Amniotic membrane and Intraperitoneal vitamin E diluted in olive oil). The same experimental method, consisting of cecal abrasion and ligature of the adjacent parietal peritoneum, was used in all rats to produce adhesions. Relaparotomy was performed on the 15th postoperative day. intra-abdominal adhesions were scored according to macromorphological characteristics and adhesion-carrying tissues underwent standard histologic examination. Inflammation, vascularization and fibrosis in granulation sites were graded in all samples. The results were analyzed using a Mann-Whitney-U test., Results: In terms of inflammation, neovascularization and fibrosis scores obtained by histology and macromorphologic adhesion scores. There were no significant differences between Groups 1 and 2 (p=0.176). The results of Groups 3, 4 and 5 showed a significant difference when compared with both Group 1 and 2 (p=0.001). The difference between Groups 3, 4 and 5 were not significant with respect to these 4 parameters., Conclusion: Intraperitoneal vitamin E and amniotic membrane treatment were both effective in the prevention of peritoneal adhesions. The combination of these agents did not produce a synergistic effect. Easy applicability of the intraperitoneal administration of vitamin E was its major advantage.

Tumor to tumor metastasis is a rare, but well recognized entity, most commonly involving a carcinoma metastasis to a benign or low grade mesenchymal tumor. A case of breast carcinoma metastasis in a recurrent myxoid liposarcoma is presented in this study. A 52-year-old female patient with a history of breast carcinoma (70% invasive lobular carcinoma and 30% invasive ductal carcinoma) presented with a mass in the right lumbar region. The excised mass was diagnosed as myxoid liposarcoma. The tumor recurred twice and was reexcised. Microscopic examination of the second recurrence revealed multiple foci of breast carcinoma metastases in myxoid liposarcoma. Immunohistochemical study showed staining for CK19, GCDFP-15, estrogen and progesterone in metastases. Both breast carcinoma metastasis and myxoid liposarcoma were immunoreactive for E-cadherin and beta-catenin. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of breast carcinoma metastasis in myxoid liposarcoma, and the first occurrence of metastasis in a liposarcoma.

p53 is a well-known tumor suppressor gene, and its mutation is a common event in intraepidermal and invasive neoplasms of the skin. p63 is a homologue of the tumor suppressor gene p53, which is expressed in human basal squamous epithelium, and despite its homology to p53, it is considered to act as an oncogene. We evaluated p63 and p53 expression in usual skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), keratoacanthoma (KA), and intraepidermal neoplasms, including Bowen's disease (BD), actinic keratosis (AK), malignant melanoma in situ (MM in situ), and Paget's disease (PD) to clarify the putative role of p63 and p53 in the development and differential diagnosis of these lesions. Seventeen SCC, 23 BCC, 16 KA, 26 AK, 22 BD, 7 MM in situ, and 6 PD were included in this study. We determined decreasing p63 staining in BD, AK, BCC, SCC, and KA, respectively. None of the MM in situ and PD was positive for p63. The mean p53 staining was highest in BD, followed by AK, SCC, PD, KA, BCC, and normal skin. There was no correlation between the groups in terms of p63 and p53 staining. Based on our findings, analysis of p63 expression may be helpful in the differential diagnosis of BD and AK versus MM in situ and PD, particularly in small biopsies.

We present the case of a laryngeal osteosarcoma in a 69-year-old man, which generated many diagnostic and treatment difficulties. The patient was admitted to the hospital because of persisting hoarseness and a laryngeal tumor was seen on laryngoscopy. Total laryngectomy was performed and the pathological examination of the resected material showed osteosarcoma of the larynx. Postoperative radiotherapy was planned but the patient declined any treatment. He was readmitted to the hospital 5 months later with a neck tumor and enlarged lymph nodes on the right side of the neck. Chemotherapy started and during treatment metastatic lymph nodes on the left side of the neck and pulmonary metastases were detected.

The metal-related complications caused by orthopedic implants have long been a concern, but these problems have been considered mostly in the field of arthroplasty or internal fixation of fractures. The recent prevalence of spinal instrumentation has evoked a similar concern among spine surgeons. Here, we present a case of intraspinal metallosis adjacent to the pedicular hook occurring after treatment of vertebral fracture by posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion, and causing paraparesis at the 3rd postoperative year. Metallic granulomas can appear around the pedicular hooks as in the reported case. Crevice and fretting corrosion are results at the junctions of rod-screw, rod-hook, transverse connector rod and other connector rods in modular spinal implants. Adequate usage of transpedicular screws may inhibit the occurrence of such a complication. For this reason, further studies are necessary to increase metallic corrosive resistance to inhibit crevice and fretting corrosion.

Thirty-year-old woman with lower abdominal pain was operated due to adnexial mass. Cystectomy on right gonad revealed sertoli cell adenoma and simple serous cyst and left gonadal biopsy showed immature testis tissue. Later, laparoscopic left gonadectomy was made. Histopathology of the left gonad was consistent with sertoli cell adenoma.

The association of fibrous dysplasia and intramuscular myxoma is a rare disease known as Mazabraud's syndrome. Both lesions tend to occur in the same anatomical region. The relationship between fibrous dysplasia and myxoma remains unclear, where an underlying localized error in tissue metabolism has been proposed to explain this occasional coexistence. Another example of this syndrome in a 52 year-old woman is reported. The patient presented with a soft tissue mass at the anteromedial mid part of the left thigh. After excision of the mass, three separate bone lesions were detected in her control MRI. The soft tissue mass was misdiagnosed as liposarcoma in another center, and the bone lesions were interpreted as metastasis. The hypocellularity and the indistinct vascular pattern of the lesion were consistent with myxoma. The Jam-Shidi needle biopsies of the osseous lesions were diagnosed as fibrous dysplasia. The recognition of this entity is important for appropriate management of the patient. Patients with soft tissue myxomas should be thoroughly examined for fibrous dysplasia. The greater risk of sarcomatous transformation in fibrous dysplasia with Mazabraud's syndrome should also be kept in mind.

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign fibrosseous lesions of the bone that are rarely detected in the temporal bone. Seventeen cases of aneurysmal bone cysts with histological confirmation involving the temporal bone were reported in the literature. We report a case of left temporal aneurysmal bone cyst in a 52-year-old male with the clinical findings of periauricular painful swelling, decreased hearing, and facial paralysis. A magnetic resonance image of the patient showed a well-circumscribed multi-loculated expansile lesion of the left temporal bone during the first admission to the hospital. The lesion recurred 1 year after the subtotal resection with a more solid appearance. In addition, we review the literature for these rare lesions.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) show a predilection for the metaphysis of the long bones and the vertebrae and seldom involve the carpal bones. We present a case of an ABC in the left hamate of an 18-year-old man. Curettage and bone grafting were performed, and, because destruction of the cortex was extensive, the hamate was excised. At 3-year follow-up, the wrist was stable.

Reconstructive microsurgical procedures are getting more common in cancer patients. Adjuvant therapies, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immune therapy, are usually combined with surgical approaches to improve outcomes. This study was designed to investigate the effects of preoperative chemotherapy on healing in microvascular anastomosis. As a commonly preferred drug for neoadjuvant cancer treatment, vinblastine was used on rats in our study. Ninety-three Sprague-Dawley rats were used and randomly allocated into two groups as 72 experimental and 21 control rats. Vinblastine 2 mg/kg was administered as a single dose intraperitoneally on day 0 in the experimental group. Leukocytes and erythrocytes were counted on days 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 15 in 6 rats of the experimental and 6 rats of the control group. We found that the neutropenia period ended on approximately day 7. After applying the medication, the experimental group (n = 72) was divided into three main groups (n = 24). We performed end-to-end femoral artery anastomosis on days 7 or 14 or 21, respectively, in each group. Each main group was divided into three subgroups (n = 8), and then we tested patency and took biopsies on days 7 or 14 or 21, respectively, in each subgroup. Histopathologic evaluation was carried out. The comparison of patency tests and pathologic examination indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups., (Copyright 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign fibrosseous lesions, very rarely occurring in the orbit. Seventeen cases of ABCs involving the orbit were reported in the literature. MRI pictures of a 7-year-old female patient with ABC involving the orbit are presented here. The clinical findings were left-sided painless proptosis, diplopia, papilledema and partial loss of the vision. MRI study showed a well-circumscribed mutliloculated expansile lesion of the orbital roof. We additionally make a review of the literature for these rare lesions.

Malignant struma ovarii is a rare form of ovarian germ cell tumors. Because of its rarity, diagnosis and management of the tumor has not been clearly defined. A 52-year-old female with follicular variant of papillary carcinoma arising in struma ovarii is presented. There was no evidence of clinical malignancy or metastases. However on the basis of histopathologic findings, the case was diagnosed as malignant struma ovarii. It was accepted as stage Ia tumor and no other treatment was considered after radical excision. Due to its fairly good prognosis, surgical excision has been the preferred treatment for those who do not have disseminated disease. Nevertheless, long-term follow-up is necessary to determine the course of the disease.

Germ cell tumors constitute a very complicated group of tumors of the ovary and their histogenesis is not yet clarified. Besides their histological heterogeneity, sarcomatous areas have also been described. A right ovarian mass was found in a 23-year-old female, who was being treated in the hospital for miscarriage. Disseminated omental metastases were detected during abdominal laparotomy. Pathological examination of the dissected material revealed the tumor to be a mixed germ cell tumor (immature teratoma and dysgerminoma) with sarcomatous component. Areas resembling granulosa cell tumor were also encountered. This ovarian tumor with many different histopathological features is presented with a review of the literature. The importance of thorough sampling in determining the type and extent of the malignant components is also emphasized due to their direct relation with the prognosis.

Multiple diffuse fibrosarcoma of bone is a very rare condition, with only 3 cases reported. Its presentation is like that of a multiple myeloma or a metastatic tumor, with multiple osteolytic lesions, and its extent is limited to the bones. Disseminated involvement of the vertebrae was detected in a 26-year-old man, suggesting a metastatic tumor; however, no primary organ or soft-tissue mass was identified. The histopathologic findings of the biopsy material were consistent with fibrosarcoma. Despite treatment, the patient died within 15 months.
