To review the published literature on what has been reported on risk and protective factors for early adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in the recent decade. A scoping review of English language, peer-reviewed literature on risk and protective factors for early adolescent (aged 10–14 years) SRH published between January 2010 and January 2023 using Medline, Web of Science, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Articles reporting only on nonmodifiable demographic factors, or on the effect of interventions, were beyond the scope of this review. Of 11,956 screened records, 118 were included of which half (49.2%) were published since 2018. Most articles (44.9%) presented research conducted in North America, followed by sub-Saharan Africa (20.3%) and East Asia and Pacific (16.1%). Five percent were based on multicountry studies or reported on pooled global data. Two-thirds (61.0%) reported on quantitative cross-sectional research designs, and 78.8% included both females and males. The most common SRH outcomes were sexual behaviors (34.7%); sexual and dating violence (28.8%); and sexual attitudes, beliefs, and intentions (19.5%). Most (83.0%) articles reported on risk/protective factors at the individual level, followed by interpersonal (family 58.5%, peers 33.0%, partners 11.9%), school (21.2%), and community (15.2%) factors. None of the included articles reported on macro/structural-level factors. While there has been growing attention to risk/protective factors for early adolescent SRH, gaps remain with regards to study contexts (mainly North America), focus (mostly individual factors), and conceptualizations (generally risk-oriented). Background: Internal migration is an important part of the transition to adulthood for many young people in sub-Saharan Africa. This study examines how migration, in relation to marriage and parenthood, impacts modern contraceptive use and health facility visits amongst young urban women. Methods: We draw on Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) surveys conducted in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda (2019–2022). Our analysis is unique in being able to adjust for whether women wanted to get pregnant soon. Our sample includes women ages 15–24 years currently residing in urban areas (n = 6,225). We conducted logistic regression models clustered by village level identifier to explore the sequence of life events and the timing of migration in relation to current modern contraceptive use and recent health facility visit, a proxy for engagement with formal health services. Results: The timing of migration matters more than the sequence of these life events. Young urban women who experienced both migration and a birth, regardless of the order, had increased contraceptive use and recent health facility visit, compared to women who had only experienced one event or neither. Young women who migrated in the past year had 24% lower odds of using a modern method (Odds Ratio = 0.76; 95% confidence interval 0.63, 0.91), adjusting for demographic factors and adjusting for fertility preference (Wanting to get pregnant soon). Having had a birth was highly significant for health facility visit and among women who had had a birth, those who migrated in the last year had lower odds of a recent visit (OR = 0.68, 95% CI 0.41, 0.89). Results suggest an initially disruptive effect of migration. Discussion: Our results suggest young women who recently migrated to urban areas may need additional support in accessing contraception and formal health services for themselves or their children. Background: While a few studies have examined barriers to school re-entry among adolescent mothers, studies focusing on the experiences of girls in low-income informal settlements are scarce. We examined the factors that hindered parenting girls living in a resource-constrained urban setting from re-enrolling in school. Study setting: We conducted the study in Korogocho, a low-income urban informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. Methods: Barriers to school re-entry were documented through inductive thematic analysis of 32 in-depth interviews with pregnant and parenting adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 years (N = 22), parents/guardians (N = 10), and 10 key informant interviews with teachers (N = 4), and community leaders (N = 6). Results: Interviewed girls blamed their being out of school on their childcare responsibilities, poverty, stigmatizing and discriminatory attitudes from students and teachers, and withdrawal of parental support. While parents, teachers, and community leaders agreed that poverty and lack of childcare support hindered parenting girls from returning to school, they contended that robust support systems encompassing childcare and financial support, and less hostile school environments constituted facilitators of school re-entry among parenting adolescents. Conclusion: While the 2020 National Guidelines for School Re-entry in Kenya seek to deter the exclusion of adolescent mothers from education thereby ensuring retention, transition and completion at all basic education levels, the findings underscore the need for programs that ensure that pregnant and parenting adolescents have the requisite financial, material, and childcare support to facilitate their retention or re-enrollment in school in line with the Guidelines. School administrators and the Ministry of Education should develop and implement interventions that make the school environment less hostile for parenting girls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research evidence has established the importance of mothers' education and their children's educational achievement. However, little has been done to establish the association between mothers' education with girls' literacy and numeracy scores, while linking it with self-efficacy. Using baseline data collected in Kibera informal settlement in 2015 as part of the Adolescent Girls Initiative-Kenya (AGI-K), this article tests the mother-child education achievement hypothesis while taking into account girls' self-efficacy. Results show a significant association between parental education and numeracy and cognitive scores at the bivariate level. In addition, interaction effects of mother's and father's education showed that girls whose mothers had at least some secondary education significantly performed better in numeracy, while the performance increased even more with increased father's level of education. Findings also show that on average, girls' numeracy and cognitive scores significantly increased by half of a standard deviation for a unit increment in self-efficacy. One policy implication is that investments into the secondary education of mothers in support of their daughter's education need to strengthen individual attributes of girls in self-efficacy.

A well-established empirical association exists between family background and children's educational attainment. Studies have shown the importance of parental education for not just children's educational outcomes but also other behavioral, and health outcomes. In this paper, data collected by African Population and Health Research Center in 2012 across Nairobi's slums are fitted to a logistic regression to estimate the likelihood of secondary school completion. Even after controlling for influential covariates such as socioeconomic status; parental survivorship; slum area of residence and duration of stay; marital status; and substance abuse the effect of parental education on secondary school completion persists. Among female adolescents compared to male adolescents, parental presence, drug abuse, and migration into the slum compared to birth in the slum were associated with lower school completion. Overall, the study confirms the importance of parental education for adolescent secondary school completion but extends its effects beyond that reported in the literature on SSA, which is that mother's and father's education affect the acquisition of literacy and numeracy, math achievement, age for grade, and cognitive development.

This study examines factors underlying single mothers' stress in an African slum. Using survey data from 1,221 mothers in a Kenyan informal settlement, this study examines 1) whether single mothers experience more stress due to their demographic and socioeconomic characteristics; 2) whether financial and child care support from kin offsets limited support from fathers; and 3) whether variation in the type and source of support explains stress differentials across marital status. The results suggest that lower socioeconomic status does not explain single mothers' elevated stress. Rather, despite receiving greater assistance with child care and financial support from kin, single mothers receive substantially less support of either kind from the child's father. These differences in support, particularly financial assistance, account for single mothers' elevated stress. These findings highlight the comparatively weak social support available for single mothers residing in precarious urban environments and its importance for their psychological well-being.
