Abstract

The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant R-134a in a vertical plate heat exchanger was investigated experimentally. The area of the plate was divided into several segments along the vertical axis. For each of the segments, the local value of the heat transfer coefficient was calculated and presented as a function of the mean vapor quality in the segment. Owing to the thermocouples installed along the plate surface, it was possible to determine the temperature distribution and vapor quality profile inside the plate. The influences of the mass flux, heat flux, pressure of system and the flow configuration on the heat transfer coefficient were also taken into account and a comparison with literature data was performed.

Abstract

Experimental results for the pressure drop during the evaporation of the refrigerant 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a) in a vertical plate heat exchanger are presented in this paper. The influences of mass flux, heat flux and vapor quality on the two-phase pressure drop are specially analyzed and compared with previously published experimental data and literature correlations. All results are given in graphical form as the dependency of the frictional pressure drop on the mean vapor quality. .

Abstract

This article reports viscosity data on a series of colloidal dispersions collected as part of the International Nanofluid Property Benchmark Exercise (INPBE). Data are reported for seven different fluids that include dispersions of metal-oxide nanoparticles in water, and in synthetic oil. These fluids, which are also referred to as ‘nanofluids,’ are currently being researched for their potential to function as heat transfer fluids. In a recently published paper from the INPBE study, thermal conductivity data from more than 30 laboratories around the world were reported and analyzed. Here, we examine the influence of particle shape and concentration on the viscosity of these same nanofluids and compare data to predictions from classical theories on suspension rheology.

Abstract

In this study, the transported entropy of ions for 8YSZ and 10Sc1CeSZ electrolytes was experimentally determined to enable precise modeling of heat transport in solid oxide cells (SOCs). The Peltier coefficient, crucial for thermal management, was directly calculated, highlighting reversible heat transport effects in the cell. While data for 8YSZ are available in the literature, providing a basis for comparison, the results for 10Sc1CeSZ show slightly smaller Seebeck coefficients but higher transported ion entropies. Specifically, at 700 ° C and an oxygen partial pressure of p O 2 = 0.21 bar, values of S O 2 − * = 52 ± 10 J/K·F for 10Sc1CeSZ and S O 2 − * = 48 ± 9 J/K·F for 8YSZ were obtained. The transported entropy was also validated through theoretical calculations and showed minimal deviations when comparing different cell operation modes (O2||O2−||O2 and H2, H2O||O2−||O2). The influence of the transported entropy of the ions on the total heat generation and the partial heat generation at the electrodes is shown. The temperature has the greatest influence on heat generation, whereby the ion entropy also plays a role. Finally, the Peltier coefficients of 8YSZ for all homogeneous phases agree with the literature values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

42. Shape Optimization of Heat Exchanger Fin Structures Using the Adjoint Method and Their Experimental Validation

Abstract

The freedom of additive manufacturing allows for the production of heat-transferring structures that are optimized in terms of heat transfer and pressure loss using various optimization methods. One question is whether the structural optimizations made can be reproduced by additive manufacturing and whether the adaptations can also be verified experimentally. In this article, adjoint optimization is used to optimize a reference structure and then examine the optimization results experimentally. For this purpose, optimizations are carried out on a 2D model as well as a 3D model. The material chosen for the 3D optimization is stainless steel. Depending on the weighting pairing of heat transfer and pressure loss, the optimizations in 2D result in an increase in heat transfer of 15% compared to the initial reference structure with an almost constant pressure loss or a reduction in pressure loss of 13% with an almost constant heat transfer. The optimizations in 3D result in improvements in the heat transfer of a maximum of 3.5% at constant pressure loss or 9% lower pressure losses at constant heat transfer compared to the initial reference structure. The subsequent experimental investigation shows that the theoretical improvements in heat transfer can only be demonstrated to a limited extent, as the fine contour changes cannot yet be reproduced by additive manufacturing. However, the improvements in pressure loss can be demonstrated experimentally following a cross-section correction. It can therefore be stated that with increasing accuracy of the manufacturing process, the improvements in heat transfer can also be utilized.

43. Experimental Heat Transfer Coefficients for Zeotropic Mixture Condensation of Hexamethyldisiloxane/Octamethyltrisiloxane and Ethanol/Hexamethyldisiloxane

Abstract

Legal requirements for refrigerants necessitate a continuous development of these fluids, also focusing on mixtures. This article contributes three aspects to the ongoing research: (1) Experimental mean heat transfer coefficients were determined for the condensation of two novel zeotropic mixtures, hexamethyldisiloxane (MM)/octamethyltrisiloxane and ethanol/MM, gathered for filmwise condensation on a vertical tube. (2) Both mixtures were investigated with several compositions to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mixture effects. (3) The results were taken to develop a novel superposition approach to predict mixture condensation.
