Abstract

Porous nanostructured layers, exhibiting 2-2.2 eV photoluminescent (PL) emission, have been formed on silicon surfaces by the production of optical breakdown in different gases (air, Ar 2, He, N 2, O 2), maintained at atmospheric pressure. We found a significant influence of the ambient gas characteristics on the morphological and chemical properties of the layers produced, as well as on the PL efficiency. Gases with relatively low ionization potentials (air, N 2, O 2) were found to better support the optical discharge and to provide the strongest plasma-related heating of the substrate material. This led to considerable microstructural and composition modifications, which gave rise to the maximization of PL emissions. We also found a clear correlation between the PL properties of the layers, subsequent to fabrication, as well as after prolonged aging, and the presence of different oxygen-containing compounds. Abstract

The laser-induced air breakdown technique is applied to treat Germanium (GE) wafers and the properties of the porous layers so formed on its surface, containing nanoscale holes and consisting of Ge nanocrystals embedded into GeO(sub)2 matrices is studied. These layers are found to exhibit strong and stable photoluminescence in the green and ultra violet (UV) ranges due to defects in the GeO(sub)2 matrix or quantum confinement effects.

Abstract

Laser ablation in liquids is a versatile and promising method for synthesis of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) that are particularly attractive for bio-sensing, medical application, as well as for catalysis [1]. In the experiments, NPs of different materials are successfully produced by using laser systems with various pulse durations, shape, wavelengths, and fluence. The major mechanisms involved in the formation of these NPs are, however, still under discussionHere, we focus our attention at the better understanding of the physical processes involved in NPs formation by laser ablation in liquids. For this, a series of both experimental and numerical studies are performed. In particular, by using different laser systems with pulse duration from femtosecond to CW range, metallic NPs are obtained with different mean size and size distributions. Furthermore, the role of the solution concentration, liquid properties and of laser-induced fragmentation is demonstrated [1]. To analyze these results, multi-physical numerical modeling is performed. First, laser ablation is modeled for various laser fluences [2,3]. Simulation results show the beginning of the formation of the ablation plume, shock wave, a void/bubble in front of the target. The bubble is formed only above a well-defined both target and liquid-dependent threshold. It then collapses and the target is reheated, so that more NPs originate from this effect. Later, diffusion-driven nucleation and collision growth enter into play. In addition, laser-induced fragmentation and growth of nanoparticles are examined in liquids [4]. The resulted nanoparticles are particularly attractive for bio-sensing, medical application, as well as for catalysis. First, laser energy absorption is considered. The role of laser wavelength is underlined. Then, ultra-short laser-induced fragmentation is considered. The obtained results help us to elucidate the roles of thermal, mechanical and electrostatic effects in the particle decomposition. The absorption cross sections are calculated based on the generalized Mie theory. In addition, combined FDTD-rate equation calculations are carried out revealing a considerable field enhancement around the particle [5]. These results agree with the experiments.Finally, the obtained results demonstrate that the major decomposition mechanism mostly depends on the particle size, laser wavelength and both particle and liquid properties. It is found that as a result of a quite moderate ultra-short laser irradiation, only melting and partial evaporation occurs. With the increase of laser fluence, particle decomposition is observed resulting from both thermal and mechanical effects. The role of thermionic emission [6] and the possibility of Coulomb explosion are also discussed. Abstract

International audience; Laser ablation (LA) is one of simple and versatile techniques for synthesis of nanoparticles [1]. The major advantages of this method are in its green character and in the possibility of a control over particle size. These advantages make LA a unique tool for nanoparticle synthesis. In this study, we examine the mechanisms involved in nanoparticle formation by laser ablation in gases and in liquids. First, we consider the very early ablation stage providing initial conditions for much longer plume expansion processes. In the case of femtosecond and picosecond laser ablation, the initial population of primary nanoparticles are shown to be formed at this stage. Then, when either ambient gases or liquids are present, the ablated flow suffers a background pressure. The dynamics of the laser plume expansion is changed revealing the formation of shock waves if the background pressure is high enough [2]. As a result, the ablated material is compressed and a part of it becomes supersaturated [3].When ablation takes place in liquids a cavitation bubble is also formed for larger laser fluences. The second population of primary nanoparticles is formed at this stage. Finally, during a much longer later stage, nanoparticle aggregation/fragmentation enters into play leading to the formation of the secondary particles. Based on numerical modelling we shed light on the above mechanisms by using different numerical approaches, such as molecular dynamics, DSMC [4], numerical hydrodynamics [3] and analytical analysis [2]. Calculations are performed mostly for metallic targets and for carbon under different background conditions. The obtained results explain recent experimental findings and help to predict the role of the experimental parameters. 39. Laser-induced treatment of silicon in air and formation of Si/SiOx photoluminescent nanostructured layers

Abstract

Two different mechanisms of laser-induced treatment of silicon in atmospheric air are compared. In one, silicon target was ablated by pulsed UV radiation, which led to a formation of microscale spikes under the irradiation spot and a deposition of material around it. The treated material contained silicon nanocrystals and exhibited weak photoluminescence (PL) signals, whose peak position was not uniform over the treated surface and varied from 2.0 to 2.3 eV in different points. In another mechanism, silicon target served to provide first electrons in order to initiate a breakdown in surrounding air by pulsed IR radiation. As a result, a highly porous nanostructured layer was formed under the contact of the target with the breakdown plasma. All points of the layer exhibited only 1.95 eV PL signals, whose intensity was stronger than in the case of the UV ablation by at least an order of magnitude. Possible mechanisms of nanostructure formation and PL origin are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

40. Effects of deposition and post-fabrication conditions on photoluminescent properties of nanostructured Si/SiOxfilms prepared by laser ablation

Abstract

Pulsed laser ablation (PLA) from a Si target in an inert He ambient has been used to produce Si/SiOxnanostructured thin films on Si substrates. After the film exposition to atmospheric air, they exhibited photoluminescence (PL) signals with peak energy between 1.58 and 2.15eV. It was found that both natural and thermal oxidation of the films can cause dramatic changes in PL properties giving rise to the appearance or considerable enhancement of fixed PL peaks around 1.6–1.65 and 2.2–2.25eV. Quite different time-dependent PL degradation behavior under continuous laser irradiation gives an evidence for different mechanisms responsible for the PL peaks. Possible origins of PL are discussed.

41. Electric fields of a laser spark produced by radiation with various parameters

Abstract

An experimental investigation was made of the spatiotemporal structure of electric fields of a laser spark produced by radiation of different wavelengths (0.53, 1.06, and 10.6 μm), pulse durations (microsecond, nanosecond, and subnanosecond), and intensities (I=109 — 1013 W cm-2. The distribution of the fields near a spark corresponded to a quadrupole configuration of charges in a plasma, consisting of two oppositely directed dipoles in the region of the leading and trailing plasma fronts. The relationships governing the spatial evolution of the quadrupole potential structure were established as a function of the pulse duration and radiation intensity. In particular, the conditions for the relative dominance and degeneracy of the component dipoles were found. Typical dipole moments were determined for various radiation parameters. The amplitude of the fields outside the spark was influenced mainly by a geometric factor related to the transverse dimensions of the plasma. Moreover, at high intensities (I≥1013 W cm-2) this influence was supplemented by a contribution of a nonlinear mechanism dependent on the radiation wavelength and causing considerable changes in the amplitude and structure of the fields.

An experimental investigation was made of the spatiotemporal structure of the electric fields of a plasma formed as a result of optical breakdown of air near the target surface by radiations of various wavelengths (0.193, 0.53, 1.06, and 10.6 μm), pulse durations (microsecond, nanosecond, and subnanosecond), and intensities (108 - 1013 W cm-2). A study was made of the influence of the target and of nearby objects, and of their materials (conductor, dielectric) on the distribution of the electric fields of the laser plasma, and also on the probe diagnostic system.

47. Interferometer based on a surface-plasmon resonance for sensor applications

Abstract

An interferometric method was used for the first time to detect, under surface-plasmon resonance conditions, phase changes in a reflected beam caused by changes in the refractive index of the medium being diagnosed. The threshold of the sensitivity to changes in the refractive index was estimated to be 4 × 10-8. The proposed interferometer can be used successfully in bio and chemical-sensor systems.
