The spin phenomena observed at a clean metall-insulator interface are typically reduced to Rashba-Edelstein effect, that leads to spin accumulation over a few monolayers. We demonstrate that the presence of interface disorder significantly expands the range of potential phenomena. Specifically, the skew scattering at the metal - insulator boundary gives rise to the "kinetic Rashba-Edelstein effect", where spin accumulation occurs on a much larger length scale comparable to mean free path. Moreover, at higher orders of spin-orbit interaction, skew scattering is accompanied with spin relaxation resulting in the interface spin-Hall effect - a conversion of electrical current to spin current at the metal surface. Unlike the conventional spin-Hall effect, this phenomenon persists even within the Born approximation. The spinel-structure CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ compound displays a rather unusual orbitally-driven three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal transition. The low-T symmetry-broken insulating state is especially interesting due to the existence of a metastable irradiation-induced disordered weakly conducting state. Here we study intense femtosecond optical pulse irradiation effects by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. We show that the structural coherence of the low-T broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshold excitation fluence resulting in a structurally inhomogeneous transient state which persists for several-tens of picoseconds before reverting to the low-T disordered weakly conducting state. The electronic order shows a transient gap filling at a significantly lower fluence threshold. The data suggest that the photoinduced-transition dynamics to the high-T metallic phase is governed by first-order-transition nucleation kinetics that prevents the complete ultrafast structural transition even when the absorbed energy significantly exceeds the equilibrium enthalpy difference to the high-T metallic phase. In heavy fermions the relaxation dynamics of photoexcited carriers has been found to be governed by the low energy indirect gap, E$_{g}$, resulting from hybridization between localized moments and conduction band electrons. Here, carrier relaxation dynamics in a prototype Kondo insulator YbB${}_{12}$ is studied over large range of temperatures and over three orders of magnitude. We utilize the intrinsic non-linearity of dynamics to quantitatively determine microscopic parameters, such as electron-hole recombination rate. The extracted value reveals that hybridization is accompanied by a strong charge transfer from localized 4f-levels. The results imply the presence of a hybridization gap up to temperatures of the order of E$_{g}$/k$_{B}\approx200$ K, which is extremely robust against electronic excitation. Finally, below 20 K the data reveal changes in the low energy electronic structure, attributed to short-range antiferromagnetic correlations between the localized levels.

The effect of green and ultraviolet laser light on Ba$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$TiO$_3$/LaMnO$_3$ heterostructure electrical resistance was studied. In 80-200 K range illumination induces transient resistance component at ~15% of the steady-state value, the time constant associated with the transient component is ~12 s. An analytic theory for the spectral function for electrons coupled with phonons is formulated in the adiabatic limit. In the case when the chemical potential is large and negative $\mu \to -\infty$ the ground state does not have the adiabatic deformation and the spectral function is defined by the standard perturbation theory. In this limit we present the spectral function calculated up to fourth order in the electron-phonon coupling constant which satisfies the sum rules up to the 5th moment. In the case when the chemical potential is pinned at the polaron binding energy the spectral function is defined by the ground state with a nonzero adiabatic deformation. We calculate the spectral function with the finite polaron density in the adiabatic limit. We also demonstrate how the sum rules for higher moments may be evaluated in the adiabatic limit. Contrary to the case of zero polaron density the spectral function with the finite polaron concentration has some contributions which are characteristic for polarons.

Ultrafast dynamics across the photoinduced three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal (IM) transition in CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ was investigated by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. The structural coherence of the low-$T$ broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshold excitation fluence of $F_{\mathrm{c}}\approx3$ mJ/cm$^{2}$ (at 1.55-eV photon energy) resulting in a structurally inhomogeneous transient state which persists for several-tens of picoseconds before reverting to the original low-$T$ state. A short overview of theoretical models for the description of the relaxation processes in metals excited by a short laser pulse is presented. The main effort is given to description of different processes which are taking place after absorption of the laser pulse. Widely used two temperature model is discussed and the conditions of applicability of this model are identified. Various approaches for solving the Boltzmann kinetic equations are discussed. It is identified that in the case of low excitation limit the relaxation is determined by the emission of phonons by photoexcited electrons. We have studied transport and magnetotransport properties of the heterostructure consisting of the ferroelectric Ba$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$TiO$_3$ film deposited on the single crystalline manganite LaMnO$_3$. Two-dimensional electron gas arising at the interface transforms the interface region of the antiferromagnetic manganite to the ferromagnetic state with the reoriented magnetic moments. We obtained that the contribution of these ferromagnetic regions to the resistance of the heterostructure appears to be dependent on the external magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the interface (and parallel to {\it c}-axis of the ferromagnetic state of LaMnO$_3$). We believe that the decrease of the resistance of the studied heterostructure under the influence of the external magnetic field is caused by an appearance of the ferromagnetic order in the interface area. This leads to a relatively small resistance. In turn, the cycling of the applied magnetic field leads to the increase of the regions of the ferromagnetic order and, as a result, to decreasing scattering of the current carriers at the ferromagnetic disordering.

It is shown that the symmetry enforced Dirac points exist at some time reversal symmetric momenta in antiferroemgnetic compound GdB$_4$. These Dirac points may be controlled by the external magnetic field or by the deformation of the crystal. Application of the external magnetic field leads to splitting of these points into Weyl points or to opening of a gap depending on the field direction. The application of the symmetry breaking deformation also opens a gap in the spectrum. Suppression of the antiferromagnetic order leads to the formation of the nodal line instead of the Dirac points. This indicates that the symmetry enforced Dirac semimetals may be effectively used in different spintronic devices., Comment: 5 pages 2 figures

We have considered the model of the phase transition of the second order for the Coulomb frustrated 2D charged system. The coupling of the order parameter with the charge was considered as the local temperature. We have found that in such system, an appearance of the phase-separated state is possible. By numerical simulation, we have obtained different types ("stripes", "rings", "snakes") of phase-separated states and determined the parameter ranges for these states. Thus the system undergoes a series of phase transitions when the temperature decreases. First, the system moves from the homogeneous state with a zero order parameter to the phase-separated state with two phases in one of which the order parameter is zero and, in the other, it is nonzero ($\tau>0$). Then a first-order transition occurs to another phase-separated state, in which both phases have different and nonzero values of the order parameter (for $\tau<0$). We derive the kinetic equations for polaron hopping in organics that explicitly take into account the double occupation possibility and pair intersite correlations. The equations include simplified phenomenological spin dynamics and provide a self-consistent framework for the description of the bipolaron mechanism of the organic magnetoresistance. At low applied voltages the equations can be reduced to effective resistor network that generalizes the Miller-Abrahams network and includes the effect of spin relaxation on the system resistivity. Our theory discloses the close relationship between the organic magnetoresistance and the intersite correlations. The demonstration of a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and superconducting properties in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures has stimulated intense research activity in recent ten years. The 2DEG has unique properties that are promising for applications in all-oxide electronic devices. The superconductivity in such heterostructures has been observed below 300 mK. For superconductivity applications it is desirable to have more wide temperature of the existence range and the ability to control superconductivity properties by external stimulus. Based on first-principles calculations and theoretical consideration we show that all-oxide heterostructures incorporating ferroelectric constituent, such as BaTiO$_3$/La$_2$CuO$_4$, allow creating 2DEG. We predict a possibility of a high temperature guasi-two-dimensional superconductivity state. This state could be switchable between superconducting and conducting states by ferroelectric polarization reversal. We also discuss that such structures must be more simple for preparation. A nonempty $k$-regular graph $\Gamma$ on $n$ vertices is called a Deza graph if there exist constants $b$ and $a$ $(b \geq a)$ such that any pair of distinct vertices of $\Gamma$ has precisely either $b$ or $a$ common neighbours. The quantities $n$, $k$, $b$, and $a$ are called the parameters of $\Gamma$ and are written as the quadruple $(n,k,b,a)$. If a Deza graph has diameter 2 and is not strongly regular, then it is called a strictly Deza graph. A systematic temperature dependent study of the femtosecond optical superconducting (SC) state destruction and recovery in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ cuprate superconductor by means of the all-optical polarization-sensitive multi-pulse spectroscopy is presented. At low temperatures and a partial SC state suppression an anisotropic SC-gap recovery-timescale is suggested by the data. The SC state destruction and recovery dynamics are compared to the recent TR-ARPES-inferred SC-gap dynamics and a qualitative agreement is found. Using a phenomenological response function the experimental data are also compared to time dependent Ginzburg-Landau model simulations.

We develop a theory of the upper critical field in a BCS superconductor with a nonlocal interaction between electrons. We have shown that the nonlocal interaction is characterized by the parameter $k_F\rho_0$ where $k_F$ is the Fermi momentum and $\rho_0$ is the radius of electron-electron interaction. The presence of the external magnetic field leads to the generation of additional components of the order parameter with different angular momentum. This effect leads to the enhancement of the upper critical field above the orbital limiting field. In addition the upward curvature in the temperature dependence of $H_{c2}(T)$ in the clean limit is predicted. We studied the superconducting (SC) state depletion process in an electron doped cuprate Pr$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-\delta}$ by pumping with near-infrared (NIR) and narrow-band THz pulses. When pumping with THz pulses tuned just above the SC gap, we find the absorbed energy density required to deplete superconductivity, $A_{dep}$, matches the thermodynamic condensation energy. Contrary, by NIR pumping $A_{dep}$ is an order of magnitude higher, despite the fact that the SC gap is much smaller than the energy of relevant bosonic excitations. The result implies that only a small subset of bosons contribute to pairing.

We derive the kinetic equations for the hopping transport that take into account electron spin and the possibility of double occupation. In the Ohmic regime the equations are reduced to the generalized Miller-Abrahams resistor network. We apply these equations to the problem of the magnetic moment relaxation due to the interaction with the random hyperfine fields. It is shown that in a wide range of parameters the relaxation rate is governed by the hops with the similar rates as spin precession frequency. It is demonstrated that at the large time scale spin relaxation is non-exponential. We argue that the non-exponential relaxation of the magnetic moment is related to the spin of electrons in the slow-relaxing traps. Interestingly the traps can significantly influence the spin relaxation in the infinite conducting cluster at large times.

We derive kinetic equations describing injection and transport of spin polarized carriers in organic semiconductors with hopping conductivity via an impurity level. The model predicts a strongly voltage dependent magnetoresistance, defined as resistance variation between devices with parallel and antiparallel electrode magnetizations (spin valve effect). The voltage dependence of the magnetoresistance splits into three distinct regimes. The first regime matches well known inorganic spintronic regimes, corresponding to barrier controlled spin injection or the well known conductivity mismatch case. The second regime at intermediate voltages corresponds to strongly suppressed magnetoresistance. The third regime develops at higher voltages and accounts for a novel paradigm. It is promoted by the strong non-linearity in the charge transport which strength is characterized by the dimensionless parameter $eU/k_BT$. This nonlinearity, depending on device conditions, can lead to both significant enhancement or to exponential suppression of the spin valve effect in organic devices. We believe that these predictions are valid beyond the case of organic semiconductors and should be considered for any material characterized by strongly non-linear charge transport., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The dynamics of excitations with different symmetry is investigated in the superconducting (SC) and normal state of the high-temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi2212) using optical pump-probe (Pp) experiments with different light polarizations at different doping levels. The observation of distinct selection rules for SC excitations, present in A$_{{\rm 1g}}$ and B$_{{\rm 1g}}$ symmetries, and for the PG excitations, present in A$_{{\rm 1g}}$ and B$_{{\rm 2g}}$ symmetries, by the probe and absence of any dependence on the pump beam polarization leads to the unequivocal conclusion of the existence of a spontaneous spatial symmetry breaking in the pseudogap (PG) state.

The theory of the electron relaxation in metals excited by an ultrashort optical pump is developed on the basis of the solution of the linearized kinetic equation. The kinetic equation includes both the electron-electron and the electron-phonon collision integrals. The widely used two temperature model follows from the theory as the limiting case, when the thermalization due to the electronelectron collisions is fast with respect to the electron-phonon relaxation. It is demonstrated that the energy relaxation has two consecutive processes. The first and most important step describes the emission of phonons by the photo-excited electrons. It leads to the relaxation of 90% of the energy before the electrons become thermalized among themselves. The second step describes electronphonon thermalization and may be described by the two temperature model. The second stage is difficult to observe experimentally because it involves the transfer of only a small amount of energy from electrons. Thus the theory explains why the divergence of the relaxation time at low temperatures was never observed experimentally., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We theoretically study how the dynamics of the resistive state in narrow superconducting channels shunted by an external resistor depends on channel's length $L$, the applied current $j$, and parameter $u$ characterizing the penetration depth of the electric field in the nonequilibrium superconductors. We show that changing $u$ dramatically affects both the behaviour of the current-voltage characteristics of the superconducting channels and the dynamics of their order parameter. Previously, it was demonstrated that when $u$ is less than the critical value $u_{c1}$, which does not depend on $L$, the phase slip centers appear simultaneously at different spots of the channel. Herewith, for $u>u_{c1}$ these centres arise consecutively at the same place. In our work we demonstrate that there is another critical value for $u$. Actually, if $u$ does not exceed a certain value $u_{c2}$, which depends on $L$, the current-voltage characteristic exhibits the step-like behaviour. However, for $u>u_{c2}$ it becomes hysteretic. In this case, with increase of $j$ the steady state, which corresponds to the time independent distribution of the order parameter along the channel, losses its stability at switching current value $j_{sw}$, and time periodic oscillations of both the order parameter and electric filed occur in the channel. As $j$ sweeps down, the periodic dynamics ceases at certain retrapping current value $j_r

The effect of giant dielectric permittivity due to phase separation accompanied by charged inhomogeneities in low-doped manganites is discussed. The effect appears in the vicinity of the second-order magnetic phase transition and is caused by long-range Coulomb forces. The long-range Coulomb interaction is responsible for the formation of inhomogeneous charged states and determines their characteristic length scales. We derive the phase diagram of the inhomogeneous charged states in the framework of the phenomenological theory of phase transitions. The large value of the static dielectric function reduces the characteristic value of the Coulomb energy of the inhomogeneous state and makes the appearance of the magnetoelectric effect possible. Highly-anisotropic in-plane magneto-resistance (MR) in graphite (HOPG) samples has been recently observed (Y. Kopelevich et al., arXiv:1202.5642) which is negative and linear in low fields in some current direction while it is giant, super-linear and positive in the perpendicular direction. In the framework of the hopping conductance theory via non-zero angular momentum orbitals we link extraordinary MRs in graphite and in organic insulators (OMAR) observed in about the same magnetic fields. The theory predicts quadratic negative MR (NMR) when there is a time-reversal symmetry (TRS), and linear NMR if TRS is broken. We argue that the observed linear NMR could be a unique signature of the broken TRS both in graphite and organic compounds. We study the incoherent recombination of topological defects created during a rapid quench of a charge-density-wave system through the electronic ordering transition. Using a specially devised 3-pulse femtosecond optical spectroscopy technique we follow the evolution of the order parameter over a wide range of timescales. By careful consideration of thermal processes we can clearly identify intrinsic topological defect annihilation processes on a timescale ~30 ps and find a signature of extrinsic defect-dominated relaxation dynamics is found to occurring on longer timescales.

Systems which rapidly evolve through symmetry-breaking transitions on timescales comparable to the fluctuation timescale of the single-particle excitations may behave very differently than under controlled near-ergodic conditions. A real-time investigation with high temporal resolution may reveal new insights into the ordering through the transition that are not available in static experiments. We present an investigation of the system trajectory through a normal-to-superconductor transition in a prototype high-temperature superconducting cuprate in which such a situation occurs. Using a multiple pulse femtosecond spectroscopy technique we measure the system trajectory and time-evolution of the single-particle excitations through the transition in La$_{1.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$CuO$_{4}$ and compare the data to a simulation based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, using laser excitation fluence as an adjustable parameter controlling the quench conditions in both experiment and theory. The comparison reveals the presence of significant superconducting fluctuations which precede the transition on short timescales. By including superconducting fluctuations as a seed for the growth of superconducting order we can obtain a satisfactory agreement of the theory with the experiment. Remarkably, the pseudogap excitations apparently play no role in this process.

We use femtosecond optical spectroscopy to systematically measure the primary energy relaxation rate k1 of photoexcited carriers in cuprate and pnictide superconductors. We find that k1 increases monotonically with increased negative strain in the crystallographic a-axis. Generally, the Bardeen-Shockley deformation potential theorem and, specifically, pressure-induced Raman shifts reported in the literature suggest that increased negative strain enhances electron-phonon coupling, which implies that the observed direct correspondence between a and k1 is consistent with the canonical assignment of k1 to the electron-phonon interaction. The well-known non-monotonic dependence of the superconducting critical temperature Tc on the a-axis strain is also reflected in a systematic dependence Tc on k1, with a distinct maximum at intermediate values (~16 ps-1 at room temperature). The empirical non-monotonic systematic variation of Tc with the strength of the electron-phonon interaction provides us with unique insight into the role of electron-phonon interaction in relation to the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity as a crossover phenomenon., Comment: manuscript as accepted in PRX, main paper (20 pages, 3 figures) plus supplementary material (25 pages, 19 figures)

The processes leading to nonthermal condensate vaporization and charge-density wave (CDW) melting with femtosecond laser pulses is systematically investigated in different materials. We find that vaporization is relatively slow (tau_v ~ 1 ps) and inefficient in superconductors, exhibiting a strong systematic dependence of the vaporization energy Uv on Tc. In contrast, melting of CDW order proceeds rapidly (tau_m = 50 ~ 200 fs) and more efficiently. A quantitative model describing the observed systematic behavior in superconductors is proposed based on a phonon-mediated quasi-particle (QP) bottleneck mechanism. In contrast, Fermi surface disruption by hot QPs is proposed to be responsible for CDW state melting.

We have investigated the properties of the resistive state of the narrow superconducting channel of the length L/\xi=10.88 on the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model. We have demonstrated that the bifurcation points of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations cause a number of singularities of the current-voltage characteristic of the channel. We have analytically estimated the averaged voltage and the period of the oscillating solution for the relatively small currents. We have also found the range of currents where the system possesses the chaotic behavior.

The current-voltage characteristics of long and narrow superconducting channels are investigated using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations for complex order parameter. We found out that the steps in the current voltage characteristic can be associated with bifurcations of either steady or oscillatory solution. We revealed typical instabilities which induced the singularities in current-voltage characteristics, and analytically estimated period of oscillations and average voltage in the vicinity of the critical currents. Our results show that these bifurcations can substantially complicate dynamics of the order parameter and eventually lead to appearance of such phenomena as multistability and chaos. The discussed bifurcation phenomena sheds a light on some recent experimental findings.

Using time-domain Terahertz spectroscopy we performed direct studies of the photoinduced suppression and recovery of the superconducting gap in a conventional BCS superconductor NbN. Both processes are found to be strongly temperature and excitation density dependent. The analysis of the data with the established phenomenological Rothwarf-Taylor model enabled us to determine the bare quasiparticle recombination rate, the Cooper pair-breaking rate and the electron-phonon coupling constant, \lambda = 1.1 +/- 0.1, which is in excellent agreement with theoretical estimates., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; final version, accepted for publication in Phys. Dynamics of depletion and recovery of superconducting state in La2-xSrxCuO_4 thin films is investigated utilizing optical pump-probe and optical pump - THz probe techniques as a function of temperature and excitation fluence. The absorbed energy density required to suppress superconductivity is found to be about 8 times higher than the thermodynamically determined condensation energy density and nearly temperature independent between 4 and 25 K. These findings indicate that during the time when superconducting state suppression takes place (~0.7 ps), a large part (nearly 90%) of the energy is transferred to the phonons with energy lower than twice the maximum value of of the SC gap and only 10% is spent on Cooper pair breaking., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Unconventional symmetries of the order parameter allowed some researchers to maintain that a purely repulsive interaction between electrons provides superconductivity without phonons in a number of high-temperature superconductors. We consider flux penetration to a 2D superconducting cylinder. We show that in the low field limit the kinetics is deterministic. In the strong field limit the dynamics becomes stochastic. We report on the high resolution studies of the temperature (T) dependence of the q=0 phonon spectrum in the quasi one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW) compound K0.3MoO3 utilizing time-resolved optical spectroscopy. Numerous modes that appear below Tc show pronounced T-dependences of their amplitudes, frequencies and dampings. The anharmonic response of charge-density wave (CDW) order to strong laser-pulse perturbations in 1T-TaS_2 and TbTe_3 is investigated by means of a multiple-pump-pulse time-resolved femtosecond optical spectroscopy. We observe remarkable anharmonic effects hitherto undetected in the systems exhibiting collective charge ordering. The efficiency for additional excitation of the amplitude mode by a laser pulse becomes periodically modulated after the mode is strongly excited into a coherently oscillating state. A similar effect is observed also for some other phonons, where the cross-modulation at the amplitude-mode frequency indicates anharmonic interaction of those phonons with the amplitude mode. By analyzing the observed phenomena in the framework of time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we attribute the effects to the anharmonicity of the mode potentials inherent to the broken symmetry state of the CDW systems.

The temporal evolution of systems undergoing symmetry breaking phase transitions (SBTs) is of great fundamental interest not only in condensed matter physics, but extends from cosmology to brain function and finance \cite{topology,Kibble,Eltsov,Finance}. However, the study of such transitions is often hindered by the fact that they are difficult to repeat, or they occur very rapidly. Here we report for the first time on a high-time-resolution study of the evolution of both bosonic and fermionic excitations through a second order electronic charge-ordering SBT in a condensed matter system. Using a new three-pulse femtosecond spectroscopy technique, we periodically quench our model system into the high-symmetry state, detecting hitherto unrecorded coherent aperiodic undulations of the order parameter (OP), critical slowing down of the collective mode, and evolution of the particle-hole gap appearing through the Peierls-BCS mechanism as the system evolves through the transition. Numerical modeling based on Ginzburg-Landau theory is used to reproduce the observations without free parameters. The close analogy with other Higgs potentials in particle physics\cite{Higgs} gives new insight into hitherto unexplored dynamics of both single particle and collective excitations through a SBT. Of particular interest is the observation of spectro-temporal distortions caused by disturbances of the field arising from spontaneous annihilation of topological defects, similar to those discussed by the Kibble-Zurek cosmological model., Comment: 4 figures

We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SrFe_2As_2 exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering using optical pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. A remarkable critical slowing down of the quasiparticle relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_SDW = 200K is observed. From temperature dependence of the transient reflectivity amplitude we determine the SDW-state charge gap magnitude, 2Delta_SDW/k_BT_SDW=7.2+-1. The second moment of the Eliashberg function, lambda<(hbar omega)^2>=110+-10meV^2, determined from the relaxation time above T_SDW, is similar to SmFeAsO and BaFe_2As_2 indicating a rather small electron phonon coupling constant unless the electron-phonon spectral function (alpha^2F(omega) is strongly enhanced in the low-energy phonon region.

The 2D lattice gas model with competing short and long range interactions is appliedused for calculation of the incoherent charge transport in the classical strongly-correlated charge segregated polaronic state. We show, by means of Monte-Carlo simulations, that at high temperature the transport is dominated by hopping of the dissociated correlated polarons, where with thetheir mobility is inversely proportional to the temperature. At the temperatures below the clustering transition temperature the bipolaron transport becomes dominant. The energy barrier for the bipolaron hopping is determined by the Coulomb effects and is found to be lower than the barrier for the single-polaron hopping. This leads to drastically different temperature dependencies of mobilities for polarons and bipolarons at low temperatures.

We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SmFeAsO and near-optimally doped SmFeAsO_{0.8}F_{0.2} single crystals - exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and superconductivity respectively - using pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. In the undoped single crystals a single relaxation process is observed, showing a remarkable critical slowing down of the QP relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_{SDW}\simeq125{K}. In the superconducting (SC) crystals multiple relaxation processes are present, with distinct SC state quasiparticle recombination dynamics exhibiting a BCS-like T-dependent superconducting gap, and a pseudogap (PG)-like feature with an onset above 180K indicating the existence of a pseudogap of magnitude 2\Delta_{\mathrm{PG}}\simeq120 meV above T_{\mathrm{c}}. From the pump-photon energy dependence we conclude that the SC state and PG relaxation channels are independent, implying the presence of two separate electronic subsystems. We discuss the data in terms of spatial inhomogeneity and multi-band scenarios, finding that the latter is more consistent with the present data., Comment: Replaced by the correct version

Femtosecond time-resolved optical spectroscopy was used to systematically study photoexcited carrier relaxation dynamics in the intermediate-valence heavy fermion system Yb1-xLuxAl3 (0 < x < 1). Given the demonstrated sensitivity of this experimental technique to the presence of the low energy gaps in the charge excitation spectrum, the aim of this work was to study the effect of dilution of the Kondo lattice on its low energy electronic structure. The results imply that in Yb1-xLuxAl3 the hybridization gap, resulting from hybridization of local moments and conduction electrons, persists up to 30% doping. Interestingly, below some characteristic, doping dependent temperature T*(x) the relaxation time divergence, governed by the relaxation bottleneck due to the presence of the indirect hybridization gap, is truncated. This observation is attributed to the competing ballistic transport of hot electrons out of the probed volume at low temperatures. We determined electronic relaxation times via pump-probe optical spectroscopy using sub-15 fs pulses for the normal state of two different cuprate superconductors.We show that the primary relaxation process is the electron-phonon interaction and extract a measure of its strength, the second moment of the Eliashberg function\lambda<\omega^{2}>=800\pm200 meV^{2} for La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_{4} and \lambda<\omega^{2}>=400\pm100 meV^{2} for YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.5}.
