Energy Recovery Linacs such as PERLE require high average current high brightness beams. This sets particular requirements on the kind of injectors that they can use as the injectors must be capable of producing bunches at MHz repetition rates, compressing the bunches to the specified value and transporting those bunches while they are still in the space charge dominated regime into the main ERL all while keeping the emittance low. In particular, PERLE will require a 20 mA beam consisting of 500 pC bunches with a repetition rate of 40 MHz. These bunches will be required to have rms lengths of 3mm, a total beam energy of 7 MeV, appropriate Twiss parameters to match them to the main loop and transverse emittances of 6 mm mrad. In this paper, a DC gun based injector capable of meeting this specification will be presented with beam dynamics simulation showing the behaviour of the beam from the photocathode to the exit of the first main linac pass. The regenerative Beam Break Up (BBU) excited by the dipole Higher Order Modes (HOMs) in superconducting RF (SRF) cavities is a crucial issue for continuous-wave high-current energy recovery linacs. Beam-induced monopole HOMs can increase the cryogenic losses of the linac also. One of the ways to limit these effects is to use HOM couplers on the beam tubes of cavities to absorb and untrap cavity eigenmodes. These couplers feature antennas designed to damp dangerous HOMs and adequately reject the fundamental mode. This study illustrates an investigation of the HOMs of a 5-cell 801.58 MHz elliptical SRF cavity designed for PERLE (Powerful Energy Recovery Linac for Experiments), a multi-turn energy recovery linac (ERL) currently under study and later to be hosted at IJCLab in Orsay. Time-domain wakefield and frequency-domain eigenmode simulations have been used to calculate the cavity broadband HOM impedance spectra and identify the dangerous BBU HOMs. The transmission characteristics of several coaxial HOM couplers have been studied. Delivery of high charge electron bunches into the main loop of an ERL (energy recovery linac) while preserving the emittance is challenging. This is because at the typical injection momentum, space charge forces still have a significant effect on the beam dynamics. In this work we consider the design of the merger for PERLE, an ERL test facility to be based at IJCLab in France. Previous simulations have shown that the baseline DC gun based injector can achieve the required emittance at the booster linac exit. The quality of the 500 pC bunches must then be preserved with space charge through the merger at total beam energy of 7 MeV keeping the emittance below 6 mm mrad. The beam dynamics in the merger were simulated using the code OPAL and optimised using a genetic algorithm. Three possible merger schemes were investigated. The goal of the optimisation was to minimise the emittance growth while also achieving the required Twiss parameters to match onto the spreader at the main linac exit. The injector for PERLE, a proposed electron Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) test facility for the LHeC and FCC-eh projects, is intended to deliver 500 pC bunches at a repetition rate of 40.1 MHz for a total beam current of 20 mA. These bunches must have a bunch length of 3 mm rms and an energy of 7 MeV at the entrance to the first linac pass while simultaneously achieving a transverse emittance of less than 6 mm mrad. The injector is based around a DC photocathode electron gun, followed by a focusing and normal conducting bunching section, a booster with 5 independently controllable SRF cavities and a merger into the main ERL. A design for this injector from the photocathode to the exit of the booster is presented. This design was simulated using ASTRA for the beam dynamics simulations and optimized using the many objective optimization algorithm NSGAIII. The injector for PERLE, a planned ERL test facility, must be capable of delivering 500 pC bunches at a repetition rate of 40.1 MHz to provide a beam with 20 mA average current with a projected rms emittance of less than 6 mm mrad. This must be achieved at two different operational voltages 350 kV and 220 kV for unpolarised and polarised operation respectively. The PERLE injector will be based on an upgrade of a DC photocathode electron gun operated previously at ALICE ERL at Daresbury. The upgrade will add a load lock system for photocathode interchange. This paper presents the results of a re-optimisation of the electrode system as ALICE operated with a bunch charge of around 80 pC while PERLE needs a bunch charge of 500 pC. PERLE is a proposed high power Energy Recovery Linac, designed on multi-turn configuration, based on SRF technology, to be hosted at Orsay-France in a col-laborative effort between local laboratories: LAL and IPNO, together with an international collaboration involv-ing today: CERN, JLAB, STFC ASTeC Daresbury, Liverpool University and BINP Novosibirsk. PERLE will be a unique leading edge facility designed to push advances in accelerator technology, to provide intense and highly flexible test beams for component development. MYRRHA [1] (Multi Purpose Hybrid Reactor for High Tech Applications) is an Accelerator Driven System (ADS) project. Its superconducting linac will provide a 600 MeV - 4 mA proton beam. The first project phase based on a 100 MeV linac is launched. The Radio-Frequency (RF) couplers have been designed to handle 80 kW CW at 352.2 MHz. The LUCRECE project aims at developing an elementary RF system (cavity, power source, LLRF and controls) suitable for continuous (CW) operation at 1.3 GHz. This effort is made in the framework of the advanced and compact FEL project LUNEX5 (free electron Laser Using a New accelerator for the Exploitation of X-ray radiation of 5th generation), using superconducting linac technology for high repetition rate and multi-user operation (www.lunex5.com). In this context, based on its large experience on coupler design and RF conditioning, LAL Laboratory is in charge of the design and the fabrication of RF couplers that could operate at up to 15-20 kW in CW mode. For this purpose, geometry based on CORNELL 65kW CW couplers will me modified to fulfil the LCLS2 type cavity with the high necessary coupling level. Electromagnetic simulations and optimisation and associated thermal heating will be discussed. PERLE (Powerful ERL for Experiments) is a novel ERL test facility, initially proposed to validate choices for a 60 GeV ERL foreseen in the design of the LHeC and the FCC-eh. Its main thrust is to probe high current, CW, multi-pass operation with superconducting cavities at 802 MHz (and perhaps testing other frequencies of interest). With very high virtual beam power (~ 10 MW), PERLE offers an opportunity for controllable study of every beam dynamic effect of interest in the next generation of ERL design; becoming a ‘stepping stone' between present state-of-art 1 MW ERLs and future 100 MW scale applications. PERLE design features Flexible Momentum Compaction lattice architecture for six vertically stacked return arcs and a high-current, 6 MeV, photo-injector. With only one pair of 4 cavity cryomodules, 400 MeV beam energy can be reached in 3 re-circulation passes, with beam currents in excess of 15 mA. The beam is decelerated in 3 consecutive passes back to the injection energy, transferring virtually stored energy back to the RF. This unique facility will serve as a test-bed for high current ERL technologies, as well as a user facility in low energy electron and photon physics., Proceedings of the 9th Int. For the XFEL accelerator, Thales, RI research Instrument and LAL are working on the manufacturing, assembly and conditioning of Fundamental power couplers. 670 couplers has been manufactured. The main characteristics of these couplers are remained at 1.3 GHz. The paper describes the full production activity from the starting of the program We describe the lesson learned from a mass production of FPC coupler and different steps necessaries for obtaining a rate up to 10 couplers a week. we propose also some other way to be optimized for a future possible mass production of such components. With comparison of processes and adaptation which could benefit to an increase rate, if needed, including some of them which could be studies from the coupler definition to the manufacturing process in order to obtain a stable and possible increased rate or lower cost of production by decreasing the risks on programs. The industrialization and the RF conditioning of 800 power couplers for the European XFEL have been performed by LAL-Orsay from fall 2013 to spring 2016. LAL laboratory has in charge the industrial monitoring, the quality control and the RF conditioning of the couplers fabricated by two different suppliers. It was the first experience of coupler production at such scale. The faced challenges, the different issues, and the lessons learned during the mass production will be reported. Delivering RF power from the outside (at room temperature) to the inside of SRF cavities (at ~4 K temperature), requires a power coupler to be thermally isolating, while still electrically conducting on the inside. Stainless steel parts that are coated on the insides with a few skin depths of copper can meet these conflicting requirements. The challenge has been the adhesion strength of copper coating on stainless steel coupler parts when using electroplating methods. These methods also require a nickel flash layer that is magnetic and can therefore pose problems. Alameda Applied Sciences Corporation (AASC) uses Coaxial Energetic Deposition (CED) from a cathodic arc plasma to grow copper films directly on stainless steel coupler parts with no Ni layer and no electrochemistry. The vacuum arc plasma consists of ~100 eV Cu ions that penetrate a few monolayers into the stainless steel substrate to promote growth of highly adhesive films with crystalline structure. In order to perform the RF conditioning of the fundamental coupler for the XFEL accelerator, Thales and LAL developed together a test bench being able to make the automatic RF conditioning. The capability of this test bench is of 4 pairs of coupler at the same time with automatic sequences of increasing the RF power. The test bench is composed of the overall RF station providing up to 5 MW peak power at 1.3 GHz. The waveguide distribution allows 4 individual RF lines for conditionning,and the automatic sequence applied to the couplers in respect with all signals monitored and controlled during the RF process. LAL has in charge the production monitoring and the RF conditioning of 800 power couplers to equip 100 XFEL cryomodules. The conditioning process and all the preceding preparation steps are performed in a 70m2 clean room. This infrastructure, its equipment and the RF station are designed to allow the treatment of 8 couplers in the same time, after a ramp-up phase. LUNEX5 (free electron Laser Using a New accelerator for the Exploitation of X-ray radiation of 5th generation) aims at investigating compact and advanced Free Electron Laser (FEL). It comprises one one hand a 400 MeV superconducting linac for studies of advanced FEL schemes, high repetition rate operation (10 kHz), multi-FEL lines, and one the other hand a Laser Wake Field Accelerator (LWFA) for its qualification by a FEL application, an undulator line enabling advanced seeding and pilot user applications in the 40-4 nm spectral range. Following the CDR completion, different R&D programs were launched, as for instance on FEL pulse duration measurement, high repetition rate electro-optical sampling. The COXINEL ERC Advanced Grant aims at demonstrating LWFA based FEL amplification, thanks to a proper electron beam manipulation, with a test experiment under preparation. LAL-Orsay is developing an important effort on R and technology studies on RF power couplers for superconductive cavities. One of the most critical components of those devices is the ceramic RF window that allows the power flux to be injected in the coaxial line. The presence of a dielectric window on a high power RF line has a strong influence on the multipactor phenomena. The most important method to reduce the multipactor is to decrease the secondary emission yield of the ceramic window. Due to its low Secondary electron Emission Yield (SEY), TiN thin film is used as a multipactor suppressor coating on RF ceramic coupler windows. In this frame work, TiN deposition was made by magnetron reactive sputtering. XPS and XRD analysis were performed to control the film composition and stoechiometry. Coating thickness was optimized so that the TiN coating effectively reduces the SEY but does not cause excessive heating, due to ohmic loss. For this purpose, SEY measurements on covered and uncovered TiN Alumina substrates, multipactor level breakdown on TiN coated Cupper substrates and RRR measurements were performed for different deposit thicknesses., Proceedings of the 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2010, Kyoto, Japan
