The HK Special Administrative Region Government has been making efforts to promote active aging among older adults. This qualitative study is aimed at gaining an understanding of the perception of and experiences in eSports among middle-aged and older adults in HK, China, using the Theory of Planned Behavior. Thirty-nine adults aged >45 years were stratified by (a) whether they had experience of participating in eSports and (b) age (i.e., 45–64 years vs. ≥65 years). In addition, 10 administrators working in community centres for middle-aged and older adults were invited for a semistructured interview. The results revealed the pertinent themes of (a) behavioral beliefs (physical benefits (enhanced physical activity levels, body coordination, and cognition), social benefits (increased interactions and team communication and enlarged social circle), psychological benefits (stereotype breaking, sense of recognition, enjoyment, and improved mood), and adverse health effects (psychological intensity, frustration, obsession with winning, overuse strain, and sleep disturbance)), (b) normative beliefs (support and encouragement from family and nonfamily members), and (c) control beliefs (game content, program personnel attitude, resource availability (venue, equipment, and manpower), administrators’ perspectives, and support from the industry). The study results will be instrumental to the development of related interventions and instruments for middle-aged and older adults, will enable researchers to explore the benefits of eSports programs for the studied population, and will promote healthy and active aging in the long term.

Background/Objectives: Adolescence is at a transition stage of developmental psychology, and they must go through their psychosocial and identity crisis, which affect their self-concept. According to the structure of self-concept, physical is considered as one of the elements affecting a person's evolvement of self, which can be called as physical self-esteem. In regards to the equilibrium mental benefits of self-compassion, the concept of body compassion was focused. Together with the lack of body-part related research being further investigated among non-western countries, this research aimed at translating the Body Compassion Scale (BCS) to Chinese and examining the reliability and validity of the Chinese translated BCS among Hong Kong adolescents. Methods: The reliability of the translated BCS was examined by the test-retest reliability test as well as the Cronbach's alpha value for the internal consistency. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was adopted to investigate the construct validity, and Pearson's correlation was used to examine the convergent validity with other related scales. Results: The Chinese translated BCS (Pilot Study: n = 220; Main Study: n = 1047) showed adequate psychometric properties results. It had a satisfying internal consistency and test-retest reliability. This study examined the perceptions and experiences of middle-aged and older adult participants in electronic sports (eSports) in Hong Kong (HK), China, by using the social marketing (SM) approach. This qualitative study applied SM approach to the design of a center-based eSports intervention for middle-aged and older adults in HK. Interviews were conducted with 39 adults stratified in terms of age (i.e., 45–64 vs. ≥65 years) and experience with eSports. Ten administrators working in community elderly centers were invited for semistructured interviews. Thematic analysis was performed on the data by incorporating SM. Main findings are presented in terms of five P’s. The product component of an eSports intervention includes the foundation of eSports (e.g., safety, eSports training), suitable games for older adults, and professional equipment (e.g., large-screen devices and motion-controlled Nintendo Switches). The price component comprises affordability and the frequency and duration of each eSport session, and the place component includes accessibility and spaces to play eSports. The promotion component should be educational in nature and can incorporate free trials and gaming days, short films about older adults playing eSports, promotional channels, physical evidence and annual eSports competitions. The people component consists of support from administrators and the center in charge, the availability of skilled program instructors and staff, and appropriate partnering, team sizes and instructor-to-participant ratios. The 5P’s enhance the design of future center-based eSports interventions and can help researchers and practitioners determine which aspects encourage middle-aged and older adults to participate in eSports.

According to the mental health service recommendations from WHO, self-care is the basis for tackling psychological concerns. Although self-esteem has been a symbolic self-driven psychological factor that could generate significant positive well-being and associated with physical activity (PA), self-esteem’s negative effects have been criticized by the advocation of self-compassion (SC). Therefore, with both PA and SC have been found to be effective in achieving positive psychological health, they are expected to show a relationship to cope with people’s mental health problems. To fully study the relationship, a concrete systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to review the relationship between PA and SC. The meta-analysis outcome was obtained by the pooled correlation coefficient using the random effects model, and meta-regression with mixed-effect models were used to determine the moderate effects. A total of 25 studies, with n = 5622 samples, were included. Ten studies examined the association between PA and SC; five studies examined the association between PA regulation and SC; and six RCT studies and four single group repeated measure studies examined the effect of PA on SC. The random effects model demonstrated a significant effect size on the overall relationship between PA and SC (r = 0.26), with significant heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis showed the significant effect sizes on four types of relationship, with r = 0.19, r = 0.273 and r = 0.34, r = 0.273, respectively. All potential sources of heterogeneity, including age, gender, study design and risk of bias, showed no moderating effect on the relationship. The relationship between PA and SC was significant while investigating the effect of non-mind-and-body interventions and constructing a mechanism of PA and SC can be done as future implications.

Esports have grown to become a core part of popular culture in many countries, including Hong Kong. Albeit the low participation rates in Esports in Hong Kong, it was starting to gain traction, yet the local Esports advocates were experiencing challenges in promoting and popularizing the Esport. Hence, the current study was aimed to identify and reveal the determinants of participating in Esports, as well as strengthen the work on Esports behaviors using the theory of planned behavior (TPB), a reliable and valid prominent theory in predicting human behavior across a plethora of contexts, ranging from health-related behaviors to sport consumption behaviors. In the current study, the convenience sampling method was used to recruit over 2000 students (secondary school, N = 1567 ( female = 615 ); university students, N = 1525 ( female = 255 ). The students were invited to participate in the survey for collecting their perception on Esports participation using TPB-based questionnaire. Results were analyzed using theoretical analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show that both secondary school and university students have positive attitudes toward Esports. The outcomes indicated that participating in Esports develops social networks, and people with professional Esports’ skills capability and being fortitude tend to be models of Esports participation. However, inadequate resources are a significant barrier to participation in the Esports business. The SEM model verified that the variables of intention in Esports participation among the students in Hong Kong with an adequate goodness of fit index. As a whole, the current study has identified the factors and determinants of Esports’ intention and behavior among Hong Kong students, which were successfully displayed in terms of the theory of planned behavior. In addition, the findings are expected to provide the Hong Kong government with a documented framework to advocate Esports-related policies on a long-term basis.

Microcredit is usually used to support employment, poverty reduction, women empowerment, etc. It is rare to have studies on using microcredit to help residents in informal housing to improve their residential mobility. This study is a novel attempt to explore the roles of microcredit in informal housing in the future by taking Hong Kong as a case study. This study aims to investigate whether microcredit affects the relocation decisions of low-income tenants in informal housing markets by using a quasi-experimental approach. A microcredit scheme for this purpose was first proposed, pitched for funding, and then implemented by a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Hong Kong to provide interest-free loans for households living in sub-divided units (SDUs) to pay for rental deposits. Interviews were conducted with SDU households. The results show that the microcredit scheme is conducive to the relocation decisions of low-income households, especially in emergency cases. This study shows the key role of microcredit in empowering low-income households in their relocation decisions, and it can make a difference to the future informal housing markets in the world.

Background People with physical disabilities (PWPD) have limited opportunities to participate in sport activities. Sitting light volleyball (SLVB) is an adapted sport that combines light volleyball and paralympic sitting volleyball. This study examined the effectiveness of an SLVB intervention program to improve the physical and psychological health outcomes of PWPD in Hong Kong, China. Methods Thirty-two PWPD [13 women; SLVB group, n = 18; control group (CG), n = 14] with an average age of 48.89 years (SD = 14.42 years) participated in a 16-week intervention consisting of basic SLVB skills, and they also received instructions on the required posture, team tactics, and SLVB rules. Physical (i.e., muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, flexibility, and aerobic endurance) and psychological (i.e., physical activity enjoyment and quality of life) health outcomes were measured before and after the intervention. Results Individuals in the SLVB group exhibited statistically significant improvements in cardiovascular endurance [F(1,29) = 4.23, p = .049], body composition [F(1,23) = 6.67, p = .017], and physical activity enjoyment [F(1,29) = 16.94, p = .001] compared with adults in the CG. Conclusions Participating in SLVB has physical and psychological benefits for adults with physical disabilities in this study. Background: Esports is seen as an emerging industry that has enjoyed a surge in popularity worldwide. As a result, researchers have undertaken studies to try to understand the motivations and factors that impact Esports gameplay. Given the extensive utilization of TPB in many research projects to conceptualize and predict various behaviors, the current study aimed to further extend this theory to the Esports context by developing and validating an instrument that can illustrate the factors that impact the intention to participate in Esports, thus predicting Esports game playing behaviors. Methods: A total of 25 participants were involved in the development of the questionnaire using the qualitative approach, while 915 university students and 1164 secondary school students were involved in the survey for the questionnaire validation using the exploratory factor analysis and the confirmatory factor analysis. Results: All measurement models of the TPB subscales are considered as good fit. Conclusion: Hence, showing the newly designed TPB Esports Intention Questionnaire was found to be reliable and valid in revealing the level of intentions as well as the factors affecting Hong Kong students playing Esports.

Esports is a rapidly growing industry worldwide, and it is making significant inroads in Hong Kong as well. However, owing to debates regarding the distinction between Esports and video gaming and the potential negative effects of engaging in Esports, its development in Hong Kong is still in its infancy. Therefore, this qualitative study investigated the perceptions and attitudes of teenagers and young adults toward Esports development and engagement, using the theory of planned behavior. Twenty-five teenagers and young adults (male = 24, female =1) participated in this study, with their ages ranging from 15 to 29 years. Our results revealed the views of Hong Kong teenagers and young adults on the beneficial and deleterious outcomes (goal setting and achievement, physical health, socialization and teamwork, psychological benefits, academics and time distribution, physical strain, negative social image, and perception toward sport participation), subjective norms (parents, peers, teachers, and modeling effect), and barriers and facilitators (balance between academics and Esports, capability, career prospects and future reality, psychological benefits, and peer encouragement and support) of participating in Esports. Additionally, the results of this qualitative study may contribute toward a deeper understanding of Hong Kong Esports players to develop a theory of planned behavior construct for capturing the beliefs and perceptions of Hong Kong teenagers toward Esports.

Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate older adults’ perceptions of their walking experiences, using the social-ecological model as a guiding framework and to propose future walking intervention content. Methods: Thirty-eight participants (19 women, 47% from private elderly centers, mean age = 72.8 (SD = 7.4 years) took part in semi-structured interviews. Qualitative data analysis software QSR-NVivo was used for thematic coding. Results: Thematic deductive analysis revealed pertinent themes at the individual level (health benefits and barriers, fall risk, perseverance, and walking as a suitable activity for older adults), social environment level (social support and social interaction), physical environment level (density, land-use mix, and connectivity, perceived safety, pedestrian facilities (benches, quality of walking paths and sidewalks, and aesthetics), other pedestrian behaviors, and weather, and policy level (lack of walking programs in the community, and supportive culture for an active lifestyle). Discussion: Our findings provide insights for the planning of future multilevel walking intervention programs for older adults in Hong Kong. It is suggested that future walking intervention should include professionals (e.g., physiotherapist or coach) in a group setting, practical walking recommendations such as proper walking posture, and additional fun activities for older adults.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the eight-item Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) in Hong Kong older adults. Study 1 assessed the scale's factor validity and test-retest reliability, whereas Study 2 examined its convergent validity in Hong Kong older adults. A total of 168 (Study 1) older adults completed the PACES twice over a 2-week interval, and 57 (Study 2) older adults completed both the eight-item PACES and a measure of quality of life. The results of both studies showed that the eight-item PACES had a high degree of internal consistency. Both the composite reliability and average variance extracted from Study 1 were high, suggesting that as a set, the eight items of the PACES reliably measured the construct. The observed test-retest reliability was satisfactory over a 2-week interval. This eight-item PACES is an expedited and reliable instrument for assessing physical activity enjoyment in Chinese older adults.

The association between physical activity in achieving mental health benefits and subjective well-being is consistently identified by empirical research. The causation of a positive self-concept created by physical exercise is empirically supported by Sonstroem and Morgan’s (1988) exercise and self-esteem model (EXSEM). However, various drawbacks of maintaining high self-esteem have been identified, thus, the concept of self-compassion was conjectured to be a form of “true self-esteem.” Hence, the current study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical activity and self-compassion by examining the exercise and self-esteem model revised with self-compassion (EXSEM-SC). This study recruited secondary school students from Hong Kong using convenience sampling. The structural equation modeling (SEM) approach, including path analysis and multiple indicators, multiple causes (MIMIC) modeling, were used to reveal the results of the study. The results (n = 1097) indicated that the relationship between physical activity and self-compassion could be demonstrated by the EXSEM-SC, with a satisfactory goodness-of-fit index in the SEMs. The SEM also demonstrated the direct paths from physical activity to self-compassion and mental well-being, indicating the significant effect of physical activity on self-compassion.

(1) Background: This study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Last 7-Day Sedentary Behaviour Questionnaire (SIT-Q-7d-Chi) in Hong Kong older adults; (2) Methods: Study 1 assessed the questionnaire’s test–retest reliability, and Study 2 examined its validity. Place the question addressed in a broad context and highlight the purpose of the study; (3) Results: In Study 1, 84 older adults (aged 60–90) completed the SIT-Q-7d-Chi twice over a 2-week interval, and in Study 2, 38 older adults (i) completed the SIT-Q-7d-Chi and the Sedentary Behaviour Questionnaire for Older Adults (SBQOA) and (ii) wore a waist-mounted accelerometer for 7 consecutive days. In Study 1, the SIT-Q-7d-Chi’s test–retest reliability (ICC = 0.91–0.99) was satisfactory, and adequate internal consistency was found for most domains of the SIT-Q-7d-Chi (Cronbach’s alpha value being 0.7 or above). Study 2′s results showed that the SIT-Q-7d-Chi results were significantly correlated with the SBQOA results, but not with the accelerometer results; (4) Conclusions: This study revealed the prevalence of sedentary behavior among Hong Kong’s senior citizens, which can be used as a reference to plan or evaluate a future sedentary behavior intervention for older persons, including identifying the content and intensity of activities.

Gaining a deeper understanding of the perceptions and experiences of PWPI in the SLVB intervention is critical to the development of SLVB as a physical activity and a sport. The aims of this study were (a) to assess participants’ experiences of the intervention and (b) to examine the suitability and feasibility of SLVB intervention for PWPI.MethodsTwenty participants (mean age = 53.52 years, standard deviation 9.02 years; 60% female; 25% with at least a college degree) participated in semi-structured interviews.ResultsContent analysis revealed features of their experiences at theindividualorintrapersonallevel (physical and psychological health, enjoyment, novelty, competence, autonomy),interpersonallevel (socialization and teamwork, social support),organizationalandcommunitylevels (perceived sport venue environment, venue accessibility, safety, dissemination of information), andpolicylevel (resources allocation by the government). The participants also commented on the suitability and feasibility of the SLVB intervention for PWPI, its content and coaching, the modified rules, the duration of sessions, scheduling, and the number of participants and coaches.ConclusionsThis study identified several themes relevant to the promotion of PWPI engagement with SLVB and demonstrated that adopting a multilevel approach to the intervention resulted in positive outcomes for participants. Playing SLVB is suitable and feasible for PWPI. The findings contribute to the understanding of the experiences PWPI had of the SLVB intervention, which is critical to the further development of SLVB as a physical activity and a sport.

Background: Hong Kong students with physical disabilities were being seen as physically inactive compared with typically developed people or even people with other disabilities, such as visual impairment or intellectual disabilities. Lack of regular physical activity would lead to poor physical fitness, and yet is associated with a higher risk of being obese or other physical as well as mental health problems. Currently, a newly developed sport, sitting light volleyball, modified from the Paralympic sitting volleyball, is considered as suitable for disabled people with lower physical fitness, in which was able to increase fitness level and increase their physical activity. Objectives: The current study aimed to examine the effect of sitting light volleyball in improving physical fitness among students with physical disabilities in Hong Kong. Methods: The current study was an interventional, quasi-experimental study. Nineteen participants, 8 males and 11 females, with the age of 18.5 on average (SD = 3.24), participated in the study. Two local special education schools were involved in the 10-week (65 minutes per session) sitting light volleyball intervention program. Participants took part in a fitness test before and after the intervention. The intended-to-treat approach was adopted throughout the data analysis, with the last observation carried forward method for managing the missing data. Results: No significant changes in body composition outcomes of the participants were found. The non-parametric sign test showed significant median differences on dumbbell press test and flexibility test of the right shoulder before and after the intervention, with Z = 2.94, P = 0.003; Z = 2.20, P = 0.028, respectively. Conclusions: This indicated that the sitting light volleyball intervention was able to provide preliminary evidence on showing the enhancement of muscle endurance and flexibility of the students with physical disabilities. Whereas, intensified interventions should be done in the future to examine the possible changes in body composition as well as psychological health conditions.

The participants also commented on the suitability and feasibility of the SLVB intervention for PWPD, contents and coaching, modified rules, duration of session and scheduling, and number of participants and coaches. Conclusion: This qualitative study identified several themes for engaging PWPD in SLVB, and demonstrated that adopting a multilevel approach to intervention in SLVB has positive outcomes to participants. In general, SLVB is suitable and feasible to PWPD. The study contributes to an in-depth understanding of the experiences among PWPD in the SLVB intervention, which is very critical to the further development of SLVB in terms of a PA intervention and sport.

Background Our pilot study has demonstrated improvements in health outcomes through participation in a new sport, light volleyball (LVB), among older adults. In response to the promising results of the LVB pilot study and the priority of allocating resources to the prevention of age-related fitness degradation by the Hong Kong (HKG) government, the present study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a LVB intervention on physical and psychological health attributes among older adults at a larger scale in HKG. Methods/design This study will apply both quantitative and qualitative methods with a large sample (approximately 315 participants). We will adopt a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design to further evaluate the effectiveness of a LVB intervention on health outcomes against a comparison group, Tai Chi (TC), and a control group (C). Older adults will be eligible to join the intervention if they are (a) aged 65 years and above; (b) living in the community independently; (c) absent of diagnosed cognitive impairment; (d) not regular participants in a structured PA program for two years preceding the study; and (e) able to achieve a passing score on the Timed-up-and-go test (TUG) and Abbreviated Mental Test (AMT). About 315 participants will be randomly assigned into 3 groups in 1:1:1 ratio. LVB group participants will receive 16-week LVB program; TC group will utilize a simplified 24-form Yang Style TC, and C group participants will be instructed to maintain their normal daily activity and join regular non-exercise social gatherings. Measurements will be collected before and after the intervention, and 6 months and 12 months after completion of the intervention. Discussion This intervention, if effective, will enhance older adult’s physical and psychological health, and provide the data and evidence to support policymaking in relation to future PA promotion for older adults. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the 24-item Social Environment Questionnaire (SEQ-C). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the factor validity and measurement invariance (Purpose 1) of the SEQ-C in 453 older adults in Hong Kong. Convergent validity (Purpose 2) and test–retest reliability (Purpose 3) were also measured. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis and measurement invariance supported the four-factor structure (representing companionship, encouragement, neighborhood social cohesion, and role models) of the SEQ-C, in a 15-item model that closely fitted the data. The SEQ-C was also found to have acceptable to satisfactory internal consistency, test–retest reliability, composite reliability, and moderate convergent validity in correlating perceived social support. This study showed that the SEQ-C is a suitable means of measuring the social environments of older adults in Hong Kong.

Introduction This study examined the associations between physical environment (facilitators and barriers), social environment, and walking among older adults in Hong Kong. Methods Between April and December 2016, a sample of 679 adults aged 65 years or above was recruited in Neighbourhood Elderly Centres from across the 18 council districts of Hong Kong. Participants were asked to complete validated questionnaires that were used to assess the above constructs; participants were asked to track their daily step counts over 7 days using an accelerometer. Structural Equation Modelling was performed to examine the studied relationships by using maximum likelihood estimation in LISREL 9.3. Results The initial model did not fit the data adequately. The item ‘companionship’ was deleted because of its low standardised factor loading. A standardised residual of items was correlated with reference to the modification indices and high standardised residuals. The data were analysed again. The modified structural model fitted the data sufficiently, as indicated by the fit indices. Only physical environment–facilitators (i.e., land use mix, access, street connectivity, infrastructure, indoor facilities, presence of people, and easy access to residential entrances) were predictive of older adults’ steps per day. The findings provide a reference for policy makers seeking to provide supportive physical walking environments and promote active ageing among older adults.

This paper examines the rent determinants of sub-divided units (SDUs) in Hong Kong by hedonic pricing models. The supply of low-cost housing by SDUs is achieved at the expense of tenants’ living quality and tenure security. Tenants have to make trade-offs of living space and housing facilities for lower rent, resulting in overcrowdedness and poor living environment. Some SDUs even lack basic facilities for sanitation and ventilation. As most previous property price studies presumed the presence of these basic facilities, SDUs provide a rare opportunity to examine the effects of their deficiencies on rent. Meanwhile, due to the illegality of the building works, most rental agreements are arranged informally. Relatively higher information and search costs are thus involved. Observable attributes are expected to exert significant impacts on rent as tenants mainly rely on their availabilities when they assess the SDUs. For SDUs with shared sanitation facilities, the inconvenience escalates with the subdivision density, which is expected to cause negative impact on rent. The results confirm the hypotheses that basic and observable housing facilities are important rent determinants and tenants have to pay higher rent to mitigate the inconvenience of shared facilities. This study is a pioneer attempt to give a fuller account of the SDU market landscape, providing empirical evidence about the effects of housing facility trade-offs of this informal rental market. Tenants are expected to make more compromises on housing qualities if the shortage of affordable housing worsens. The findings provide far-reaching implications for future research on housing values and affordable housing design.

Results Using thematic analysis, their experiences at the individual or intrapersonal level (improved health and well-being, enjoyment, novelty, competence autonomy, and self-regulation when playing SLVB); relationship or interpersonal levels (teamwork, social support, socialization, and communication); perceived environment level (comfort, privacy, spaciousness, and accessibility concerns); community or organizational level (safety, dissemination of information, and community facilities); and policy level (resources allocation by the government) were obtained. The participants also commented on the suitability of the SLVB intervention for PWPD, contents and coaching, modified rules, duration of session and scheduling, and number of participants and coaches. Conclusion This qualitative study identified several primary drivers and barriers for engaging PWPD in SLVB, and demonstrated that adopting a multilevel approach to our SLVB intervention has positive outcomes. Our results can facilitate the development of the experiential aspects of SLVB and indicate the suitability and feasibility of organizing SLVB-related activities in a community setting in the future.

This study examined the associations between physical environment, social environment, and walking for transportation and recreation among older adults in Hong Kong. Cross-sectional data from 450 older adults (79 years or younger [71.9%], female [79.7%]) from 18 districts in Hong Kong were used. The participants’ perceptions of their physical and social environments were collected, and their walking behaviors were self-reported. The results revealed that positive physical environment facilitators and social environments were associated with increased total walking. Only positive physical environment facilitators were associated with increased walking for transportation, and physical and social environments had no notable effect on walking for recreation. These findings suggest that policy makers and walking intervention designers should develop strategies to enhance physical and social environments to promote total walking and walking for transportation.

Purpose: This study aimed at understanding the perceptions of people with physical disabilities regarding playing Light Volleyball (LVB), identifying the possible constraints and risks they might face while playing, and providing their suggestions for fine-tuning the Light Volleyball intervention programmes. Method: Four focus group interviews were conducted with 17 participants who joined the Light Volleyball trial programme. The participants were 11 males and 6 females, with an average age of 53.5 years (SD=11.83 years). People with poliomyelitis (n = 15), spinal cord injury (n = 1), hearing impairment (n = 1) were included. Results: Participants indicated improved reactivity and coordination, happiness, cooperation in team, happiness, and novelty in general as positive outcomes while playing Light Volleyball. They preferred to play in the seated position (i.e., sitting light volleyball - SLVB), and with simpler rules. They believed that their ability to play Light Volleyball was subject to their body constraints. Conclusion: Sitting Light Volleyball can be one of the new physical activity options for future sport promotion among people with physical disabilities in the community. The effectiveness of playing Sitting Light Volleyball in enhancing health among people with physical disabilities needs to be studied in future.

Background and purpose: Given the problem of obesity, physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyles among college students in the US, this study presents demographic, psychosocial, personal and environmental predictors of physical activity (PA) on an individual college campus with a high percentage of non-traditional students. Methods: The National College Health Assessment (NCHA) survey was completed by college students at a large Northwestern university [N = 949; Male = 292 (31.1%); female = 647 (68.9%); mean age = 26.5 (SD = 9.0) years] during Fall 2011. This study (a) presented a structural model for examining how parents’ perceptions of their children’s competence, exercise benefits, exercise barriers and neighbourhood safety influenced parental support and their children’s physical activity (PA) and (b) examined the mediating effect of parental support on children’s PA. Parents of 478 children aged 6–9 years were recruited into the study. The parents were asked to complete a questionnaire assessing the aforementioned constructs and report their children’s PA outside school time over 7 days. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was applied to examine the relationship between parents’ perceptions and the reported PA of their children. The results revealed that (a) only parental support predicted children’s PA directly and (b) parents’ perceptions of their children’s competence and exercise benefits predicted parental support and, in turn, predicted children’s PA. PA interventions for Hong Kong children should emphasize increasing parental support in addition to enhancing parents’ confidence and ability to promote their children’s PA by providing positive feedback, acting as active role models and facilitating participation in PA. Additional studies are required to examine children’s PA from the perspective of parents.

We examined psychometric properties of a Modified Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (MPAQ-C). Thirty-two parents (Study 1), 40 students (6–9 years) and one of each student’s parents (Study 2), and 625 parents (Study 3) completed the MPAQ-C. This study aimed to examine the impact of individual (level of vigorous physical activity (VPA) and frequency of using sports and recreation facilities), interpersonal (perceived social cohesion (PSC)), and neighborhood environmental (availability of sports and recreation facilities) factors on youths&rsquo, health in transition in Hong Kong.&nbsp, A sample of 508 individuals aged 17&ndash, 23 years from all Hong Kong council districts randomly completed validated questionnaires by telephone survey. Of 508, 302 individuals with complete data pertaining to address geocoding were selected for further analyses. Overall, more than half of them (56.3%) used sports and recreation facilities once per month or less. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationship among the studies&rsquo, constructs. The results indicated that the proposed model sufficiently fitted the data (&chi, 2&nbsp, (24) = 32.23,&nbsp, p&nbsp, &lt, 12, CFI = .977, SRMR = .051, RMSEA = .034 (90% CI = .000 to .061)). However, two items of PSC were sequentially removed due to their low standardized factor loadings (&lt, 3). A structural model was reinserted into data analyses, and the modified model fitted the data well as indicated by fit indices (&chi, (11) = 15.29,&nbsp, 17, CFI = .987, SRMR = .054, RMSEA = .036 (90% CI = .000 to .075)). Only VPA (&beta, &nbsp, = .27,&nbsp, = .0005) and PSC (&beta, = .12,&nbsp, = .048) were significantly related to perceived health at an individual level. To promote youth health, the Hong Kong government may work with the business sector, community groups, or education institutions to develop community programs to keep youths active (especially VPA) and to build more cohesive, trustful relationships among youths in the neighborhood.

To (1) assess cycling-related questions that have been added to the electronic version of the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment II (ACHA-NCHA), (2) examine cycling prevalence, and (3) identify predictors of cycling in college students.Predominately female (69%), undergraduate (89%), and white (85%) students (N = 949) from a large, urban, northwestern, bicycle-friendly university completed the electronic version of the ACHA-NCHA II.Thirty cycling-related questions were added to the ACHA-NCHA II and a subsample of questions was analyzed.Cycling questions added to the ACHA-NCHA II scale were reliable and valid, based on the psychometric data analysis. More than half (59%) of this sample cycled; of those, 58% cycled for transportation and 44% for recreation. Facilitators and barriers to cycling were different for cycling in general and cycling for transportation.Cycling questions added to the ACHA-NCHA II can be utilized to enhance knowledge relative to cycling on college campuses.

Dynamic changes of chromatin structure facilitate diverse biological events, including DNA replication, repair, recombination, and gene transcription. Recent evidence revealed that DNA damage elicits alterations to the chromatin to facilitate proper checkpoint activation and DNA repair. Here we report the identification of the PWWP domain-containing protein EXPAND1/MUM1 as an architectural component of the chromatin, which in response to DNA damage serves as an accessory factor to promote cell survival. Depletion of EXPAND1/MUM1 or inactivation of its PWWP domain resulted in chromatin compaction. Upon DNA damage, EXPAND1/MUM1 rapidly concentrates at the vicinity of DNA damage sites via its direct interaction with 53BP1. Ablation of this interaction impaired damage-induced chromatin decondensation, which is accompanied by sustained DNA damage and hypersensitivity to genotoxic stress. Collectively, our study uncovers a chromatin-bound factor that serves an accessory role in coupling damage signaling with chromatin changes in response to DNA damage.

Background: Recently, considerable attention has been focused on dietary and medicinal phytochemicals that inhibit, reverse, or retard diseases caused by oxidative and inflammatory processes. Green tea polyphenols have both antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Objective: We examined the effects of green tea polyphenols in carbon tetrachloride– treated mice, a model of liver injury in which oxidant stress and cytokine production are intimately linked. We tested the effect of a pure form of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the major polyphenol in green tea, in mice treated with carbon tetrachloride. Design: Eight-week-old ICR mice were administered 20 L/CCl4 kg dissolved in olive oil. Two different doses of EGCG, 50 and 75 mg/kg, were tested. Control mice were treated with saline and olive oil. We analyzed liver histopathology, lipid peroxidation, and messenger RNA and protein concentrations of inducible nitric oxide synthase. Additionally, nitric oxide– generated radicals were assessed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and protein concentrations were measured by immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis. Results: Carbon tetrachloride administration caused an intense degree of liver necrosis associated with increases in lipid peroxidation, inducible nitric oxide synthase messenger RNA and protein, nitrotyrosine, and nitric oxide radicals. EGCG administration led to a dose-dependent decrease in all of the histologic and biochemical variables of liver injury observed in the carbon tetrachloride–treated mice. Conclusions: Green tea polyphenols reduce the severity of liver injury in association with lower concentrations of lipid peroxidation and proinflammatory nitric oxide– generated mediators. Green tea polyphenols can be a useful supplement in the treatment of liver disease and should be considered for liver conditions in which proinflammatory and oxidant stress responses are dominant. Although the role of the epididymis, a male accessory sex organ, in sperm maturation has been established for nearly four decades, the maturation process itself has not been linked to a specific molecule of epididymal origin. Here we show that Bin1b, a rat epididymis-specific beta-defensin with antimicrobial activity, can bind to the sperm head in different regions of the epididymis with varied binding patterns. In addition, Bin1b-expressing cells, either of epididymal origin or from a Bin1b-transfected cell line, can induce progressive sperm motility in immotile immature sperm. This induction of motility is mediated by the Bin1b-induced uptake of Ca(2+), a mechanism that has a less prominent role in maintaining motility in mature sperm. In vivo antisense experiments show that suppressed expression of Bin1b results in reduced binding of Bin1b to caput sperm and in considerable attenuation of sperm motility and progressive movement. Thus, beta-defensin is important for the acquisition of sperm motility and the initiation of sperm maturation.

Background Sizable research studies have spawned to study the association between physical environment and walking, rather than that of social environment and walking. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the associations between walking, social environments, physical environment – facilitators and barriers among older adults in Hong Kong. Methods In the period of Apr – Dec 2016, a sample of 679 older adults aged 65 yr. or above was recruited from elderly centers situated in 18 council districts. The participants were asked to complete validated questionnaires assessing the above constructs and measure their walking steps per day over seven days using accelerometers. Structural Equation Modeling was used to examine the relationships between walking and physical and social environments using maximum likelihood estimation in LISREL 9.2. The facilitators of Physical environment consist of 7 factors (Land Use Mix, Access, Street Connectivity, Infrastructure, Indoor Facilities, Presence of People, Entrance) while the Barriers consist of 5 factors (i.e., Crowdedness, Traffic Hazards, Speed, Social Disorder, Crime). The Social environment consists of 4 factors, including companionship, Social Cohesion, Encouragement, and Role model. The eukaryotic RNA splicing machinery is dedicated to the daunting task of excising intronic sequences on the many nascent RNA transcripts in a cell, and in doing so facilitates proper translation of its transcriptome. Notably, emerging evidence suggests that RNA splicing may also play direct roles in maintaining genome stability. Here we report the identification of the RNA/DNA-binding protein SON as a component of spliceosome that plays pleiotropic roles during mitotic progression. We found that SON is essential for cell proliferation, and that its inactivation triggers a MAD2-dependent mitotic delay. Moreover, SON deficiency is accompanied by defective chromosome congression, compromised chromosome segregation and cytokinesis, which in turn contributes to cellular aneuploidy and cell death. Chinese acupuncture is a traditional medical treatment in Chinese history. Recent evidence shows that this treatment is effective. However, acupuncture students can only practice on either real patients or mannequin. In this project, we propose a virtual reality training system for acupuncture. The system not just provides 3D stereo display, but also realistic haptic feedback in real-time. Since acupuncture usually involves thrust-and-lift needle motion, we also propose a bi-directional haptic model to tailor this application. Our results show that the novel haptic model confirms with practitioners' tactile experience.

HAb18G/CD147 is a heavily glycosylated protein containing two immunoglobulin superfamily domains. Our previous studies have indicated that overexpression of HAb18G/CD147 enhances metastatic potentials in human hepatoma cells by disrupting the regulation of store-operated Ca2+ entry by nitric oxide (NO)/cGMP. In the present study, we investigated the structure-function of HAb18G/CD147 by transfecting truncated HAb18G/CD147 fragments into human 7721 hepatoma cells. The inhibitory effect of HAb18G/CD147 on 8-bromo-cGMP-regulated thapsigargin-induced Ca2+ entry was reversed by the expression of either C or N terminus truncated HAb18G/CD147 in T7721deltaC and T7721deltaN cells, respectively. The potential effect of HAb18G/CD147 on metastatic potentials, both adhesion and invasion capacities, of hepatoma cells was abolished in T7721deltaC cells, but not affected in T7721deltaN cells. Release and activation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), MMP-2 and MMP-9, were found to be enhanced by the expression of HAb18G/CD147, and this effect was abolished by both truncations. Thapsigargin significantly enhanced release and activation of MMPs (MMP-2 and MMP-9) in non-transfected 7721 cells, and this effect was negatively regulated by SNAP. However, no effects of thapsigargin or SNAP were observed in T7721 cells, and expression of HAb18G/CD147 enhanced secretion and activation of MMPs at a stable and high level. Taken together, these results suggest that both ectodomain and intracellular domains of HAb18G/CD147 are required to mediate the effect of HAb18G/CD147 on the secretion and activation of MMPs and metastasis-related processes in human hepatoma cells by disrupting the regulation of NO/cGMP-sensitive intracellular Ca2+ mobilization although each domain may play different roles.

Summary Background Cystic fibrosis is caused by mutations in the gene encoding an ion-transport protein, the cystic-fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Defective secretion of anions is the primary cause of many of the clinical manifestations of cystic fibrosis, including pancreatic insufficiency. We aimed to identify a molecular mechanism from which a new method to circumvent defective pancreatic secretion could be derived. Methods Multiple-human-tissue RT-PCR and semiquantitative RT-PCR analyses were used to examine gene expression. An antisense technique was used in conjunction with radioimmunoassay, Fura-2 spectrofluorometry, immunohistochemistry, and the short-circuit current technique (Ussing chamber) for elucidation of gene function and its application in rescuing defective pancreatic secretion. Findings We cloned a newly identified gene, NYD-SP27, which has structural similarity to an isoform of phospholipase C. NYD-SP27 was expressed endogenously in human pancreatic-duct cells and upregulated in cystic fibrosis. Suppression of NYD-SP27, by transfection of its antisense into human cystic-fibrosis pancreatic-duct cells, resulted in augmentation of phospholipase-C-coupled calcium-ion release and protein kinase C activity, improvement in the amount of mutated CFTR reaching the plasma membrane, and restoration of cAMP-activated pancreatic anion secretion. Interpretation NYD-SP27 exerts an inhibitory effect on phospholipase-C-coupled processes that depend on calcium ions and protein kinase C, including CFTR trafficking and function. Its upregulation in pancreatic-duct cells may reveal a previously unsuspected defect in cystic fibrosis contributing to pancreatic insufficiency, and thus represents a new target for pharmacological intervention in cystic fibrosis.
