In two studies, we plan to investigate how goal structures are associated with engagement in political activism. The aims are following: 1. We will identify the types of goal structures related to activism (e.g., how balanced vs. Imbalanced it is) 2. We will compare how goal structures of activists and non-activists may differ. 3. We intend to explore new measurement methods for studying goal structures in the political and activist context. In Study 1, we plan to interview activists and nonactivists who both support the same political goals but differ in their level of behavioral engagement. In Study 2 we will conduct focus groups with moderate and radical activists as well as nonactivists to validate and enrich the findings from the first study.

International audience; An increasing number of academic papers, newspaper articles, and other media representations from all over the world recently bring climate change’s impact on mental health into focus. Commonly summarized under the terms of climate or ecological emotions, these reports talk about distress, anxiety, trauma, grief, or depression in relation to environmental decline and anticipated climate crisis. While the majority of psychology and mental health literature thus far presents preliminary conceptual analysis and calls for empirical research, some explanations of ecological emotions are already offered. They mainly draw from psychoanalysis and depth existential and humanistic psychology, as well as social psychology and address the relationship between ecological emotions and individual engagement in climate action. While these studies suggest building on individual resilience if concerned by ecological emotions, we argue that this only addresses their acute symptoms and not the (chronic) social causes. Based upon our literature research, we show that in an individualistic society such as the (neo-)liberal ones, feelings of individual responsibility are fostered, and this also applies to climate activism.; Un nombre croissant d'articles académiques, de reportages de journaux et d'autres représentations médiatiques provenant du monde entier récemment mettent en lumière l'impact du changement climatique sur la santé mentale. Communément regroupés sous les termes d'émotions climatiques ou écologiques, ces rapports parlent de détresse, d'anxiété, de traumatisme, de deuil ou de dépression en relation avec le déclin environnemental et la crise climatique anticipée. Si la majorité de la littérature sur la psychologie et la santé mentale présente jusqu'à présent une analyse conceptuelle préliminaire et appelle à la recherche empirique, certaines explications des émotions écologiques sont déjà proposées. Elles s'inspirent principalement de la psychanalyse et de la psychologie existentielle et humaniste approfondie, ainsi que de la psychologie sociale, et traitent de la relation entre les émotions écologiques et l'engagement individuel dans l'action climatique. Bien que ces études suggèrent de s'appuyer sur la résilience individuelle si les émotions écologiques sont concernées, nous soutenons que cela ne concerne que leurs symptômes aigus et non les causes sociales (chroniques). Sur la base de notre recherche documentaire, nous montrons que dans une société individualiste telle que les sociétés (néo-)libérales, les sentiments de responsabilité individuelle sont encouragés, et cela s'applique également à l'activisme climatique.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the challenge posed to mental health by climate change. Our inquiry is based on literature review and original qualitative studies. The data are collected from both desk research and in-depth interviews with participants belonging to following groups: high school and university students, young parents, activists, and psychotherapy patients. This paper also offers the critical review of contemporary terminology used for mental health problems and emotions appearing in the context of climate change, as well as the history of scientific interest in the issue at hand. The term and phenomenon of climate depression acquires aspecial focus, based on qualitative studies participants’ self-reports and main arguments critical to medicalization of emotions experienced when facing the climate crisis. The additional analysis of socio-political and cultural aspects of climate change and mental health concludes in establishing the urgent need for further research in the area, so as to gain multidimensional understanding necessary for providing adequate mental health services. It is very likely that it will be increasingly needed in the future.

Aim: During rescue operations, firefighters function in a social setting, and therefore they remain under social influence and exert it themselves. One of the subtle manifestations of social influence is the social facilitation effect in changing the speed and quality of operations as a result of being watched by other people. This phenomenon seems to be explained by the attentional model, which predicts that in the presence of third parties attention is narrowed, which may lead to deterioration of, or improvement in, task performance (depending on conditions). The authors addressed the research question whether firefighters are affected by to the phenomenon of social facilitation during rescue operations – the presence of bystanders affecting the performance of their tasks. Design and methods: To answer the question of whether, during rescue operations, firefighters may be subject to the phenomenon of facilitation induced by the presence of bystanders, we conducted an exploratory qualitative study based on 18 partially-structured interviews inspired by the phenomenological method, with rescuers from the State Fire Service. The interviewees’ responses were subjected to content analysis in terms of the behaviour of bystanders witnessing their activities. Interviews were analysed according to IPA with the use of qualitative data analysis software Atlas.ti. Results: Our analysis of the interviews suggests that social circumstances during rescue operations are conducive to the occurrence of the phenomenon of social facilitation. The collected data indicating the witnesses’ impact on firefighters allowed two different types of bystander behaviour, which impair the work of firefighters during operations: documenting actions of firefighters by witnesses (e.g. by recording) and conscious hindering of fire-fighting operations. The collected material also allows us to draw the conclusion that, for the rescuers in these situations, the presence of witnesses is emotionally charged – the witnesses evoke emotions (such as fear of consequences). Conclusions: The results suggest that the course of rescuers’ operations is influenced by bystanders. In addition, we identified some factors that especially hinder these activities. From a practical point of view, the filming of rescue operations by bystanders seems to be the most problematic. It is likely that this practice, which has a negative impact on the course of rescue activities, will intensify in the near future. Thus the system should be prepared for the increasing pressure from witnesses, and in particular should provide training to equip rescuers with the skills necessary to minimise the negative consequences of the audience effect.

Jednym z subtelnych przejawów wpływu społecznego jest efekt facylitacji społecznej polegający na zmianie w szybkości i jakości wykonania zadań w wyniku bycia obserwowanym przez inne osoby. Zjawisko to zdaje się wyjaśniać model uwagowy, który przewiduje, że pod wpływem obecności osób trzecich zawężeniu ulega uwaga, co może prowadzić do pogorszenia lub poprawy (w zależności od warunków) wykonania zadania. Autorzy postawili hipotezę, że strażacy podczas działań ratowniczych podlegają zjawisku facylitacji społecznej – obecność osób postronnych wpływa na przebieg wykonywanych przez nich zadań. Projekt i metody: Aby odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy strażacy podczas działań ratowniczych mogą podlegać zjawisku facylitacji wywoływanemu przez obecność osób postronnych, przeprowadzono eksploracyjne badanie jakościowe oparte na osiemnastu inspirowanych metodą fenomenologiczną i częściowo-ustrukturyzowanych wywiadach z ratownikami Państwowej Straży Pożarnej. Wypowiedzi badanych analizowano pod kątem zachowań osób postronnych będących świadkami prowadzonych działań. Treść wywiadów była rozpatrywana zgodnie z wytycznymi IPA, przy użyciu oprogramowania wspomagającego analizę jakościową (Atlas.ti). Wyniki: Analiza wywiadów pozwala przypuszczać, że okoliczności społeczne podczas działań ratowniczych sprzyjają występowaniu zjawiska facylitacji społecznej. Zgromadzone dane, wskazujące na oddziaływanie świadków zdarzenia na strażaków, pozwoliły na wyodrębnienie dwóch grup zachowań osób postronnych, które w szczególny sposób pogarszają funkcjonowanie strażaków podczas działań: dokumentowanie działań przez świadków (np. poprzez nagrywanie) oraz świadome utrudnienie działań. Zebrany materiał pozwala również na wyciągnięcie wniosku, że dla ratowników w tych sytuacjach obecność świadków jest nacechowana emocjonalnie – świadkowie wzbudzają emocje (np. lęk przed konsekwencjami). Wnioski: Uzyskane wyniki wspierają hipotezę o wpływie osób postronnych na przebieg wykonywanych przez ratowników działań. Dodatkowo wskazano czynniki, które w szczególny sposób te działania utrudniają. Z praktycznego punktu widzenia szczególną uwagę przyciąga problem filmowania akcji ratowniczych. Można przewidywać, że to negatywnie wpływające na przebieg działań zjawisko, będzie w najbliższym czasie się nasilać. Rodzi to konieczność przygotowania systemu na coraz większą presję ze strony świadków zdarzeń, zwłaszcza poprzez szkolenie ratowników w zakresie minimalizowania negatywnych konsekwencji efektu audytorium. The report concerns motivations of Polish scientists to migrate. In the two-stage study (semi-structured interviews, computer-assisted web interview) we identified the most important factors motivating Polish scientists to leave the country, and stay abroad, or to return to Poland. In the analysis we take into account differences in motivations due to gender, scientific discipline, migration status (i.e. whether a participant returned to Poland, is going to return or not) and the stage of the career at which the participant left Poland. We revealed that the most important factors motivating to leave and stay abroad are bureaucratic and financial constraints in Polish academia, as well as overload with non-scientific duties on Polish universities. It appeared that getting a satisfying job offer in Poland or a research grant in Poland would convince Polish scientists the most to come back and continue scientific career in Poland. Additionally, the report presents system solutions potentially encouraging the Polish scientists to return to Poland. Raport przedstawia wyniki badań dotyczących motywacji decyzji migracyjnych polskich naukowców. W dwuetapowych badaniach (wywiady częściowo ustrukturyzowane, wywiady ankietowe wspomagane komputerowo) zidentyfikowano najważniejsze czynniki motywujące polskich naukowców do wyjazdu z kraju oraz wpływające na ich decyzję o pozostawaniu za granicą lub powrocie do Polski. Analizy przeprowadzono z uwzględnieniem płci, dziedziny naukowej, statusu migracyjnego (czy osoba badana wróciła do Polski, planuje bądź nie planuje powrócić) i etapu kariery naukowej, na którym osoba badana wyjechała. Najważniejsze zidentyfikowane czynniki motywujące do wyjazdu i pozostawania za granicą to obecne w Polsce trudności finansowe i biurokratyczne, a także nadmierne obciążenie obowiązkami pozanaukowymi. Do powrotu motywuje przede wszystkim otrzymanie konkretnej, satysfakcjonującej propozycji pracy w Polsce lub uzyskanie funduszy na badania w Polsce. Omawiane są również zaproponowane przez osoby badane rozwiązania systemowe, które miałyby zachęcać polskich naukowców do powrotu do kraju.

The paper is a report of research project concerning qualitative methods in pain assessment. The linguistic analysis of patients with chronic pain narratives was done on the first stage. It was showed that pain is communicated in an individualized way - people use different grammatical categories and stylistic means talking about their pain experience. On the second stage of the project the adequacy of McGill Pain Questionnaire in pain assessment and diagnosis was investigated. Conclusions are connected with human experience, broadly speaking, and scientific method used in psychology.
