Search

A Buncher or Capture Cavity (BCC) Cryomodule is currently in development at Fermilab for use in a second injector for LCLS-II-HE. The BCC Cryomodule is designed to contain one 1.3 GHz cavity and one solenoid magnet as part of a 100MeV low emittance injector. The design considerations for the Cryomodule are similar to the LCLS-II cryomodule with additional requirements to account for additional vacuum loading at the end of this vessel due to the termination of the insulating vacuum. To accomplish this design, the cryomodule is being developed using the experience gained during the development of the LCLS-II cryomodule. Multipacting (MP) is a phenomenon which can affect stability in particle accelerators and limit performance in superconducting radio frequency cavities. In the TESLA shaped, 1.3 GHz, 9-cell cavities used in the LCLS-II (L2) and LCLS-II-HE (HE) projects, the MP-band (~17-24 MV/m) lies within the required accelerating gradients. For HE, the operating gradient of 20.8 MV/m lies well within the MP-band and cryomodule testing has confirmed that this is an issue. As such, MP processing for the HE cryomodule test program will be discussed. Early results on MP processing in cryomodules installed in the L2 linac will also be presented, demonstrating that the methods used in cryomodule acceptance testing are also successful at conditioning MP in the accelerator and that this processing is preserved in the mid-term., Comment: 21st Intl Conf Radio Frequency Superconductivity (SRF 2023)

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an X-ray science facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The LCLS-II project (an upgrade to LCLS) is in the commissioning phase; the LCLS-II-HE (High Energy) project is another upgrade to the facility, enabling higher energy operation. An electron beam is accelerated using superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities built into cryomodules. It is planned to build 24 1.3 GHz standard cryomodules and one 1.3 GHz single-cavity Buncher Capture Cavity (BCC) cryomodule for the LCLS-II-HE project. Fourteen of these standard cryomodules and the BCC are planned to be assembled and tested at Fermilab. Procurements for standard cryomodule components are nearing completion. The first LCLS-II-HE cryomodule, referred to as the verification cryomodule (vCM) was assembled and tested at Fermilab. Fermilab has completed the assembly of the second cryomodule. This paper presents LCLS-II-HE cryomodule production status at Fermilab, emphasizing the changes done based on the successes, challenges, mitigations, and lessons learned from LCLS-II; validation of the changes with the excellent vCM results.

The LCLS-II HE superconducting linac can produce multi-energy beams by supporting multiple undulator lines simultaneously. This could be achieved by using the cavity SRF tuner in the off-frequency detune mode. This off-frequency operation method was tested in the verification cryomodule (vCM) and CM 1 at Fermilab at 2 K. In both cases, the tuners achieved a frequency shift of -565$\pm$80 kHz. This study will discuss cavity frequency during each step as it is being assembled in the cryomodule string and finally when it is being tested at 2 K. Tracking the cavity frequency helped enable the tuners to reach this large frequency shift. The specific procedures of tuner setting during assembly will be presented.

The off-frequency detune method is being considered for application in the LCLS-II-HE superconducting linac to produce multi-energy electron beams for supporting multiple undulator lines simultaneously [1]. Design of the tuner has been changed to deliver roughly 3 times larger frequency tuning range. Working requirements for off-frequency operation (OFO) state that cavities be tuned at least twice a month. This specification requires the in-crease of the tuner longevity by 20 times compared with LCLS-II demands. Accelerated longevity tests of the LCLS-II HE dressed cavity with tuner were conducted at FNAL's HTS. Detail analysis of wearing and impacts on performances of the tuner's piezo and stepper motor actuators will be presented. Additionally, results of longevity testing of the dressed cavity bellow, when cooled down to 2 K and compressed by 2.6 mm for roughly 2000 cycles, will be presented.

An 8-cavity, 1.3 GHz, LCLS-II-HE cryomodule was assembled and tested at Fermilab to verify performance before the start of production. Its cavities were processed with a novel nitrogen doping treatment to improve gradient performance. The cryomodule was tested with a modified protocol to process sporadic quenches, which were observed in LCLS-II production cryomodules and are attributed to multipacting. Dedicated vertical test experiments support the attribution to multipacting. The verification cryomodule achieved an acceleration voltage of 200 MV in continuous wave mode, corresponding to an average accelerating gradient of 24.1 MV/m, significantly exceeding the specification of 173 MV. The average Q0 (3.0x10^10) also exceeded its specification (2.7x10^10). After processing, no field emission was observed up to the maximum gradient of each cavity. We derive relative proper motions of stars in the fields of the globular clusters M12, NGC 6362, M4, M55, M22, NGC 6752, NGC 3201, M30, M10, NGC 362, M5, and 47 Tucanae based on data collected between 1997 and 2015 with the 1-m Swope telescope of Las Campanas Observatory. We determine membership class and membership probability for over 446 000 objects, and show that these are efficient methods for separating field stars from members of the cluster. In particular, membership probabilities of variable stars and blue/yellow/red stragglers are determined. Finally, we find absolute proper motions for six globular clusters from our sample: M55, NGC 3201, M10, NGC 362, M5, and 47 Tuc. We present the analysis of the top-quality photometry of RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster NGC 6362, gathered over 11 observing seasons by the CASE project. 16 stars are fundamental mode pulsators (RRab stars) and 16 are first overtone pulsators (RRc stars). In two stars, previously identified as RRab, V3 and V34, we detect additional periodicity identified as radial first overtone mode. Lower than usual period ratios (0.730 and 0.728), dominant pulsation in the radial fundamental mode and presence of a long-period modulation indicate, that these two variables are not classical RRd stars, but are new members of the recently identified class of anomalous RRd variables. In a significant fraction of RRc stars, 63 per cent, we detect additional shorter-period variability in the (0.60, 0.65)$P_1$ range. This form of double-periodic pulsation must be common in first overtone RR Lyr stars, as space observations indicate. The incidence rate we find in NGC 6362, is the highest in ground-based observations reported so far. We study the properties of these stars in detail; in particular we confirm that in the colour-magnitude diagram, this group is adjacent to the interface between RRab and RRc stars, as first reported in the analysis of M3 observations by Jurcsik et al. The incidence rate of the Blazhko effect is also very high: we observe it in 69 per cent of RRab stars and in 19 per cent of RRc stars. Rare, double-periodic modulation is reported in one RRab and in one RRc star. Finally we discuss V37 - a peculiar variable in which we detect two close high-amplitude periodicities and modulation. The field of the globular cluster NGC 3201 was monitored between 1998 and 2009 in a search for variable stars. $BV$ light curves were obtained for 152 periodic or likely periodic variables, 57 of which are new detections. Thirty-seven newly detected variables are proper motion members of the cluster. Among them we found seven detached or semi-detached eclipsing binaries, four contact binaries, and eight SX Phe pulsators. Four of the eclipsing binaries are located in the turnoff region, one on the lower main sequence and the remaining two slightly above the subgiant branch. Two contact systems are blue stragglers, and another two reside in the turnoff region. In the blue straggler region a total of 266 objects were found, of which 140 are proper motion (PM) members of NGC 3201, and another 19 are field stars. Seventy-eight of the remaining objects for which we do not have PM data are located within the half-light radius from the center of the cluster, and most of them are likely genuine blue stragglers. Four variable objects in our field of view were found to coincide with X-ray sources: three chromosperically active stars and a quasar at a redshift $z\approx0.5$., Comment: Accepted by Acta Astronomica

The field of the globular cluster M12 (NGC 6218) was monitored between 1995 and 2009 in a search for variable stars. $BV$ light curves were obtained for 36 periodic or likely periodic variables. Thirty-four of these are new detections. Among the latter we identified 20 proper-motion members of the cluster: six detached or semi-detached eclipsing binaries, five contact binaries, five SX~Phe pulsators, and three yellow stragglers. Two of the eclipsing binaries are located in the turnoff region, one on the lower main sequence and the remaining three among the blue stragglers. Two contact systems are blue stragglers, and the remaining three reside in the turnoff region. In the blue straggler region a total of 103 objects were found, of which 42 are proper motion members of M12, and another four are field stars. Forty-five of the remaining objects are located within two core radii from the center of the cluster, and as such they are likely genuine blue stragglers. We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the detached eclipsing binaries V40 and V41 in the globular cluster NGC 6362 to derive masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. The orbital periods of these systems are 5.30 and 17.89 d, respectively. The measured masses of the primary and secondary components ($M_p$, $M_s$) are (0.8337$\pm$0.0063, 0.7947$\pm$0.0048) M$_\odot$ for V40 and (0.8215$\pm$0.0058, 0.7280$\pm$0.0047) M$_\odot$ for V41. The measured radii ($R_p$, $R_s$) are (1.3253$\pm$0.0075, 0.997$\pm$0.013) R$_\odot$ for V40 and (1.0739$\pm$0.0048, 0.7307$\pm$0.0046) R$_\odot$ for V41. Based on the derived luminosities, we find that the distance modulus of the cluster is 14.74$\pm$0.04 mag -- in good agreement with 14.72 mag obtained from CMD fitting. We compare the absolute parameters of component stars with theoretical isochrones in mass-radius and mass-luminosity diagrams. For assumed abundances [Fe/H] = -1.07, [$\alpha$/Fe] = 0.4, and Y = 0.25 we find the most probable age of V40 to be 11.7$\pm$0.2 Gyr, compatible with the age of the cluster derived from CMD fitting (12.5$\pm$0.5 Gyr). V41 seems to be markedly younger than V40. If independently confirmed, this result will suggest that V41 belongs to the younger of the two stellar populations recently discovered in NGC 6362. The orbits of both systems are eccentric. Given the orbital period and age of V40, its orbit should have been tidally circularized some $\sim$7 Gyr ago. The field of the globular cluster NGC 6362 was monitored between 1995 and 2009 in a search for variable stars. BV light curves were obtained for 69 periodic variables including 34 known RR Lyr stars, 10 known objects of other types and 25 newly detected variables. Among the latter we identified 18 proper-motion members of the cluster: seven detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs), six SX Phe stars, two W UMa binaries, two spotted red giants, and a very interesting eclipsing binary composed of two red giants - the first example of such a system found in a globular cluster. Five of the DEBs are located at the turnoff region, and the remaining two are redward of the lower main sequence. Eighty-four objects from the central 9x9 arcmin^2 of the cluster were found in the region of cluster blue stragglers. Of these 70 are proper motion (PM) members of NGC 6362 (including all SX Phe and two W UMa stars), and five are field stars. The remaining nine objects lacking PM information are located at the very core of the cluster, and as such they are likely genuine blue stragglers., Comment: Accepted by Acta Astronomica

We present the first detailed analysis of the detached eclipsing binary V15 in the super-metal rich open cluster NGC 6253. We obtain the following absolute parameters: M_p=1.303+-0.006 Msun, R_p=1.71+-0.03 Rsun, L_p=2.98+-0.10 Lsun for the primary, and M_s=1.225+-0.006 Msun, R_s=1.44+-0.02 Rsun, L_s=2.13+-0.06 Lsun for the secondary. Based on Dartmouth isochrones, the age of NGC 6253 is estimated to be 3.80 - 4.25 Gyr from the mass-radius diagram and 3.9 - 4.6 Gyr from color-magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting. Both of these estimates are significantly higher than those reported so far. The derived apparent distance modulus of 11.65 mag agrees well with the range of 10.9 - 12.2 mag derived by other authors; however our estimated reddening (0.113 mag) is lower than the lowest published value (0.15 mag). We confirm earlier observations that model atmospheres are not accurate enough to account for the whole CMD of the cluster, with the largest discrepancies appearing on the subgiant and giant branches. Although age estimation from the mass-radius diagram is a relatively safe, distance- and reddening-independent procedure, our results should be verified by photometric and spectroscopic observations of additional detached eclipsing binaries which we have discovered, at least two of which are proper-motion members of NGC 6253., Comment: Accepted by Acta Astronomica

The field of the metal-rich open cluster NGC 6253 has been surveyed in a search for variable stars. A total of 25 new variables were detected, 14 of which are bright stars with 13

We present an analysis of the detached eclipsing binaries V44 and V54 belonging to the globular cluster M55. For V54 we obtain the following absolute parameters: $M_p=0.726\pm 0.015\,M_\odot$, $R_p=1.006\pm 0.009\,R_\odot$, $L_p=1.38\pm 0.07\,L_\odot$ for the primary, and $M_s=0.555\pm 0.008\,M_\odot$, $R_s=0.528\pm 0.005\,R_\odot$, $L_s=0.16\pm0.01\,L_\odot$ for the secondary. The age and apparent distance modulus of V54 are estimated at 13.3 - 14.7 Gyr and $13.94\pm0.05$ mag, respectively. This age is substantially larger than ages we have derived from the analysis of binary systems in 47 Tuc and M4. The secondary of V44 is so weak in the optical domain that only mass function and relative parameters are obtained for the components of this system. However, there is a good chance that the velocity curve of the secondary could be derived from near-IR spectra. As the primary of V44 is more evolved than that of V54, such data would impose much tighter limits on the age and distance of M55., Comment: Accepted by Acta Astronomica

We report photometric observations of GQ Mus performed between 1992 and 2011. We find that the total amplitude of the orbital modulation of its brightness decreased from ~0.9 mag in 1992 to ~0.2 mag in 2010, becoming comparable to the amplitude of chaotic flickering on a time scale of several minutes. Optical spectra obtained in 2001 and 2012 indicate continuing activity of GQ Mus. The spectra show broad emission lines of HeII and HI typical for magnetic cataclysmic variables. The nova was observed as an UV-bright object in 2001 and 2012. We also show that the orbital period of GQ Mus has been constant between 1989 and 2010-2011., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Based on over 5400 BV images of 47 Tuc collected between 1998 and 2010 we obtained light curves of 65 variables, 21 of which are newly detected objects. New variables are located mostly just outside of the core in a region poorly studied by earlier surveys of the cluster. Among them there are four detached eclipsing binaries and five likely optical counterparts of X-ray sources. Two detached systems are promising targets for follow-up observations. The Mg II line is of extreme importance in intermediate redshift quasars since it allows us to measure the black hole mass in these sources and to use these sources as probes of the distribution of dark energy in the Universe, as a complementary tool to SN Ia. Reliable use of Mg II requires a good understanding of all the systematic effects involved in the measurement of the line properties, including the contamination by Fe II UV emission. We performed three spectroscopic observations of a quasar LBQS 2113-4538 (z = 0.956) with the SALT telescope separated in time by several months and we analyze in detail the mean spectrum and the variability in the spectral shape. We show that even in our good-quality spectra the Mg II doublet is well fit by a single Lorentzian shape. We tested several models of the Fe II pseudo-continuum and showed that one of them well represents all the data. The amplitudes of both components vary in time, but the shapes do not change significantly. The measured line width of LBQS 2113-4538 identifies this object as a class A quasar. The upper limit of $3\%$ for the contribution of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) to Mg II may suggest that the separation of the Broad Line Region (BLR) and NLR disappears in this class of objects., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted to A&A

Based on over 3000 BV images of M4 collected in years 1995-2009 we obtain light curves of 22 variables, 10 of which are newly detected objects. We identify four detached eclipsing binaries and eight contact binaries. Accurate periods are found for all but two variables. Nineteen variables are proper-motion members of the cluster, and the remaining three are field stars. Five variables are optical counterparts of X-ray sources. For one of the variables unassociated with X-ray sources we report a flare lasting for about 90 min and reaching an amplitude of 0.11 mag in V. One of the new contact binaries has a record-low mass ratio q=0.06. Another four such systems show season-to season luminosity variations probably related to magnetic activity cycles, whose lengths are surprisingly similar to that of the solar cycle despite a huge difference in rotational periods. The location of contact binaries on the color-magnitude diagram of M4 strongly suggests that at least in globular clusters the principal factor enabling EW systems to form from close but detached binaries is stellar evolution. We identify 46 blue and yellow stragglers in M4 and discuss their properties. We also derive a map of the differential extinction in the central part of M4, and determine the reddening of a selected reference region, E(B-V)= 0.392 mag., Comment: Accepted by Acta Astronomica

We analyze light and velocity curves of the eclipsing blue straggler V60 in the field of the globular cluster M55. We derive Mp=1.259+-0.025 Msun, Rp=1.102+-0.021 Rsun, Mbol,p=3.03+-0.09 mag for the primary and Ms=0.327+-0.017 Msun, Rs=1.480+-0.011 Rsun, Mbol,s=4.18+-0.12 mag for the secondary. We derive an apparent distance modulus (m-M)V=14.04_-0.09 mag. Based on the systemic velocity, distance, and proper motion of V60 we conclude that the system is a member of the cluster and argue that its present state is a result of rapid but conservative mass exchange which the binary is still undergoing. We report a peculiar blue excess on the ascending branch of the primary eclipse of V60 and discuss its possible origin., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Acta Astronomica

We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binaries V65, V66 and V69 in the field of the globular cluster M4 to derive masses, radii, and luminosities of their components. The orbital periods of these systems are 2.29, 8.11 and 48.19 d, respectively. The measured masses of the primary and secondary components (Mp and Ms) are 0.8035+-0.0086 and 0.6050+-0.0044 Msun for V65, 0.7842+-0.0045 and 0.7443+-0.0042 Msun for V66, and 0.7665+-0.0053 and 0.7278+-0.0048 Msun for V69. The measured radii (Rp and Rs) are 1.147+_0.010 and 0.6110+-0.0092 Rsun for V66, 0.9347+_0.0048 and 0.8298+-0.0053 Rsun for V66, and 0.8655+-0.0097 and 0.8074+-0.0080 Rsun for V69. The orbits of V65 and V66 are circular, whereas that of V69 has an eccentricity of 0.38. Based on systemic velocities and relative proper motions, we show that all the three systems are members of the cluster. We find that the distance to M4 is 1.82+-0.04 kpc - in good agreement with recent estimates based on entirely different methods. We compare the absolute parameters of V66 and V69 with two sets of theoretical isochrones in mass-radius and mass-luminosity diagrams, and for an assumed [Fe/H] = -1.20, [alpha/Fe] = 0.4, and Y = 0.25 we find the most probable age of M4 to be between 11.2 and 11.3 Gyr. CMD-fitting with the same parameters yields an age close to, or slightly in excess of, 12 Gyr. However, considering the sources of uncertainty involved in CMD fitting, these two methods of age determination are not discrepant. We derive relative proper motions of stars in the fields of globular clusters M4, M12, M22, NGC 3201, NGC 6362 and NGC 6752 based on a uniform data set collected between 1997 and 2008. We assign a membership class for each star with a measured proper motion, and show that these membership classes can be successfully used to eliminate field stars from color-magnitude diagrams of the clusters. They also allow for the efficient selection of rare objects such as blue/yellow/red stragglers and stars from the asymptotic giant branch. We present photometric and spectroscopic analysis of AE For -- a detached eclipsing binary composed of two late K dwarfs. The masses of the components are found to be 0.6314 +- 0.0035 and 0.6197 +- 0.0034 Msun and the radii to be 0.67 +- 0.03 and 0.63$ +- 0.03 Rsun for primary and secondary component, respectively. Both components are significantly oversized compared to theoretical models, which we attribute to their high activity. They show Halpha, Hbeta, Hgamma, Ca H and Ca K lines in emission, and are heavily spotted, causing large variations of the light curve., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We present the orbital and physical parameters of a newly discovered low-mass detached eclipsing binary from the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) database: ASAS J011328-3821.1 A - a member of a visual binary system with the secondary component separated by about 1.4 seconds of arc. The radial velocities were calculated from the high-resolution spectra obtained with the 1.9-m Radcliffe/GIRAFFE, 3.9-m AAT/UCLES and 3.0-m Shane/HamSpec telescopes/spectrographs on the basis of the TODCOR technique and positions of H_alpha emission lines. For the analysis we used V and I band photometry obtained with the 1.0-m Elizabeth and robotic 0.41-m PROMPT telescopes, supplemented with the publicly available ASAS light curve of the system. We found that ASAS J011328-3821.1 A is composed of two late-type dwarfs having masses of M_1 = 0.612 +/- 0.030 M_sun, M_2 = 0.445 +/- 0.019 M_sun and radii of R_1 = 0.596 +/- 0.020 R_sun, R_2 = 0.445 +/- 0.024 R_sun, both show a substantial level of activity, which manifests in strong H_alpha and H_beta emission and the presence of cool spots. The influence of the third light on the eclipsing pair properties was also evaluated and the photometric properties of the component B were derived. Comparison with several popular stellar evolution models shows that the system is on its main sequence evolution stage and probably is more metal rich than the Sun. We also found several clues which suggest that the component B itself is a binary composed of two nearly identical ~0.5 M_sun stars., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables, to appear in MNRAS

We show that the optical counterpart of the X-ray source CX 1 in M4 is a 20th magnitude star, located in the color-magnitude diagram on (or very close to) the main sequence of the cluster, and exhibiting sinusoidal variations of the flux. We find the X-ray flux to be also periodically variable, with X-ray and optical minima coinciding. Stability of the optical light curve, lack of UV-excess, and unrealistic mean density resulting from period-density relation for semidetached systems, speak against the original identification of CX 1 as a cataclysmic variable. We argue that the X-ray active component of this system is a neutron star (probably a millisecond pulsar)., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters

We report a spectroscopic study of 19 photometric variables and 55 blue, yellow and red straggler candidates in the field of omega Centauri. We confirm the cluster membership of 18 variables and 54 straggler candidates. Velocity variations are detected in 22 objects, and another 17 objects are classified as suspected of being velocity-variable. Velocity data of 11 photometric variables phase with their photometric periods, however none of these objects has a mass function indicating the presence of a massive degenerate component. Based on both photometric and spectroscopic data we find that the fraction of binaries among blue stragglers may be as high as 69 per cent., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

We have derived the absolute proper motion (PM) of the globular cluster M55 using a large set of CCD images collected with the du Pont telescope between 1997 and 2008. We find (PM_RA*cos(DEC), PM_DEC) = (-3.31 +/- 0.10, -9.14 +/- 0.15) mas/yr relative to background galaxies. Membership status was determined for 16 945 stars with 14

We report time-series photometry for 55 variable stars located in the central part of the globular cluster M55. The sample includes 28 newly identified objects of which 13 are eclipsing binaries. Three of these are detached systems located in the turn-off region on the cluster color-magnitude diagram. Two of them are proper motion (PM) members of M55 and are excellent candidates for a detailed follow-up study aimed at a determination of the cluster age and distance. Other detached binaries are located along the unevolved part of the cluster main sequence. Most of the variables are cluster blue straggler stars. This group includes 35 SX Phe stars, two contact binaries, and one semi-detached binary. V60 is a low mass, short period algol with the less massive and cooler component filling its Roche lobe. The more massive component is an SX Phe variable. The orbital period of V60 increases at a rate of dP/P=3.0E-9. In addition to numerous variable blue stragglers we also report the detection of two red stragglers showing periodic variability. Both of these are PM members of M55. We note and discuss the observed paucity of contact binaries among unevolved main sequence stars in M55 and NGC 6752. We present photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the bright detached eclipsing binary BG Ind. The masses of the components are found to be 1.428 +- 0.008 and 1.293 +- 0.008 Msun and the radii to be 2.290+-0.017 and 1.680+-0.038 Rsun for primary and secondary stars, respectively. Spectra- and isochrone-fitting coupled with color indices calibration yield [Fe/H]=-0.2+-0.1. At an age of 2.65+-0.20 Gyr BG Ind is well advanced in the main-sequence evolutionary phase - in fact, its primary is at TAMS or just beyond it. Together with three similar systems (BK Peg, BW Aqr and GX Gem) it offers an interesting opportunity to test the theoretical description of overshooting in the critical mass range 1.2-1.5 Msun., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, corrected bugs in author list

We report on the first spectroscopic search for quiescent degenerate binaries in globular clusters. Our survey is based on a sample of short-period optical variables which are likely optical counterparts of quiescent X-ray sources in omega Centauri (NGC 5139) and NGC 6397. All of the studied candidates have nearly sinusoidal light curves with amplitudes of 0.1--0.35~mag in $V$ and periods of 0.1--1.3~days. This type of variability, most probably originating from the ellipsoidal effect, has been observed in several X-ray novae when they settled into quiescence after an outburst. We find that two of the surveyed systems harbor dim components with masses in excess of one solar masss, making them attractive targets for future investigations. We report the analysis of a binary blue straggler in NGC 6752 with a short orbital period of 0.315 d and a W UMA-type light curve. We use photometric data spanning 13 years to place limits on the mass ratio (0.15

We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary V69-47 Tuc to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. Based on measured systemic velocity, distance, and proper motion, the system is a member of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. The system has an orbital period of 29.5 d and the orbit is slightly eccentric with e=0.056. We obtain Mp=0.8762 +- 0.0048 M(Sun), Rp=1.3148 +-0.0051 R(Sun), Lp=1.94 +- 0.21 L(Sun) for the primary and Ms=0.8588 +- 0.0060 M(Sun), Rs=1.1616 +- 0.0062 R(Sun), Ls=1.53 +- 0.17 L(Sun) for the secondary. These components of V69 are the first Population II stars with masses and radii derived directly and with an accuracy of better than 1%. We measure an apparent distance modulus of (m-M)v=13.35 +- 0.08 to V69. We compare the absolute parameters of V69 with five sets of stellar evolution models and estimate the age of V69 using mass-luminosity-age, mass-radius-age, and turnoff mass - age relations. The masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars are determined well enough that the measurement of ages is dominated by systematic differences between the evolutionary models, in particular, the adopted helium abundance. By comparing the observations to Dartmouth model isochrones we estimate the age of V69 to be 11.25 +- 0.21(random) +- 0.85(systematic) Gyr assuming [Fe/H]=-0.70, [alpha/Fe]=0.4, and Y=0.255. We present an analysis of NGC2204-S892 -- a new detached eclipsing binary composed of two late K dwarfs. Based on three photometric campaigns launched in 2008 we obtained 5 light curves (3 in V, 1 in B and 1 in I), and derived an orbital period of 0.451780+-0.000001 d. We also obtained 20 VLT/UVES spectra, enabling accurate radial velocity measurements. The derived masses and radii of the components (m1 = 0.733 +-0.005 Msun and R1 = 0.72 +-0.01 Rsun; m2 = 0.662 +-0.005 Msun and R2 = 0.68 \+-0.02 Rsun) are consistent with the empirical mass-radius relationship established recently for lower main sequence stars in binary systems; in particular we find that both stars are oversized compared to theoretical models. NGC2204-S892 is very active: both components show variable emission in Halpha and Hbeta and are heavily spotted, causing the light curve to show appreciable changes on a timescale of weeks. Our results add to the increasing evidence that the observed inflation of the radii of K and M stars is related to high levels of magnetic activity., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, expanded discussion of errors

We have used deep ACS/WFC images of M33 to check nature of extended objects detected by the ground based survey of Zloczewski et al. (2008). A total of 24 candidates turned out to be genuine compact stellar clusters. In addition we detected 91 new clusters. Equatorial coordinates, integrated magnitudes and angular sizes are listed for all 115 objects. Fourty-two clusters have sufficiently red colors to be candidates for old globulars. For four clusters we extracted resolved stellar photometry. Object 33-3-018 located in the outer disk of M33 turned out to be a young cluster with an age estimated at 200-350 Myr. Cluster ZK-90 has an age of 3-5 Gyr. We present a catalog of 4780 extended sources from the outer field of M33. The catalog includes 73 previously identified clusters or planetary nebulae, 1153 likely background galaxies, and 3554 new candidate stellar clusters. The survey is based on deep ground-based images obtained with the MegaCam instrument on the CFHT telescope. We provide g'r'i' photometry for detected objects as well as estimates of the FWHM and ellipticity of their profiles. The sample includes 122 new, relatively bright, likely globular clusters. Follow-up observations of fainter candidates from our list may extend the faint-end of the observed luminosity function of globular clusters in M33 by up to 3 magnitudes. The catalog includes several cluster candidates located in the outskirts of the galaxy. These objects are promising targets for deep photometry with the HST. We present spectroscopic and photometric observations of the eclipsing binary V32 located in the central field of the globular cluster NGC 6397. The variable is a single-line spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 9.8783d and a large eccentricity of e=0.32. Its systemic velocity (gamma=20.7 km/s) and metallicity ([Fe/H] -1.9) are both consistent with cluster membership. The primary component of the binary is located at the top of the main-sequence turn-off on the cluster color-magnitude diagram. Only a shallow primary eclipse is observed in the light curve. Based on stellar models for an age of 12Gyr and the mass-function derived from the radial velocity curve, we estimate the masses to be M_p=0.79 Msun and M_s=0.23 Msun. The light curve of V32 can be reproduced by adopting R_p=1.569 Rsun and R_s=0.236 Rsun for the radii and i=85.44 deg for the system inclination. The system geometry precludes observations of the secondary eclipse. The large eccentricity of the orbit is puzzling given that for metal poor, halo binaries the transition from circular to eccentric orbit occurs at an orbital period of about 20 days. We suppose that the orbit of V32 was modified relatively recently by dynamical interaction with other cluster star(s).An alternative explanation of the observed eccentricity calls for the presence of a third body in the system., Comment: AJ, accepted

We present the results of a search for dwarf novae (DNe) in globular clusters (GCs). It is based on the largest available homogeneous sample of observations, in terms of the time span, number of observations and number of clusters. It includes 16 Galactic GCs and yielded two new certain DNe: M55-CV1 and M22-CV2. All previously known systems located in our fields were recovered, too. We surveyed M4, M5, M10, M12, M22, M30, M55, NGC 288, NGC 362, NGC 2808, NGC 3201, NGC 4372, NGC 6362, NGC 6752, omega Cen (NGC 5139) and 47 Tuc (NGC 104). The discovery of two DNe, namely M55-CV1 and M22-CV2, was already reported by Kaluzny et al. (2005) and Pietrukowicz et al. (2005), respectively. In the remaining 14 GCs we found no certain new DNe. Our result raises the total number of known DNe in the Galactic globular clusters to 12 DNe, distributed among 7 clusters. Our survey recovered all three already known erupting cataclysmic variables (CVs) located in our fields, namely M5-V101, M22-CV1, and V4 in the foreground of M30. To assess the efficiency of the survey, we analyzed images with inserted artificial stars mimicking outbursts of the prototype dwarf novae SS Cyg and U Gem. Depending on the conditions, we recovered between 16-100 percent of these artificial stars. The efficiency seems to be predominantly affected by duty cycle/time sampling and much less by distance/magnitude. Except for saturated tiny collapsed cores of M30, NGC 362 and NGC 6752 (and also the dense core of NGC 2808) crowding effects in the V band were avoided by our image subtraction technique augmented with auxiliary unsaturated B-band images. Our results clearly demonstrate that in GCs common types of DNe are very rare indeed. We have started a survey of M 33 in order to find variable stars and Cepheids in particular. We have obtained more than 30 epochs of g'r'i' data with the CFHT and the one-square-degree camera MegaCam. We present the results of a variable stars search in the field of the old open cluster NGC 2204. Five new variables were found, four of them being eclipsing binaries. The sample includes a detached binary located at the turnoff, a W UMa - type system, and an interesting detached low-mass binary with a period of 0.45d which, however, is a foreground object. We provide V-light curves and finder charts for all variables together with color-magnitude diagrams of the cluster. We present the results of a search for variable stars in the central part of the globular cluster NGC 6752. The monitored sample included 160 BHB and 107 EHB stars, respectively. A total of 17 variables were detected of which 14 are new identifications. Five variables are BHB/EHB stars. We report also on identification of a detached eclipsing binary being likely a member of the cluster. We report the results of photometric monitoring of the Melotte 66 field in BVI filters. Ten variables were identified with nine being new discoveries. The sample includes eight eclipsing binaries of which four are W UMa type stars, one star is a candidate blue straggler. All four contact binaries are likely members of the cluster based on their estimated distances. Ten blue stars with U-B<-0.3 were detected inside a 14.8 x 22.8 arcmin^2 field centred on the cluster. Time series photometry for 7 of them showed no evidence for any variability. The brightest object in the sample of blue stars is a promising candidate for a hot subdwarf belonging to the cluster. We show that the anomalously wide main sequence of the cluster, reported in some earlier studies, results from a combination of two effects: variable reddening occuring across the cluster field and the presence of a rich population of binary stars in the cluster itself. We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary OGLEGC-228 (V228) to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. Based on measured systemic velocity, proper motion and distance, the system is a blue straggler member of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Our analysis shows that V228 is a semi-detached Algol. We obtain M=1.512 +/- 0.022 Msun, R=1.357 +/- 0.019 Rsun, L=7.02 +/- 0.050 Lsun for the hotter and more luminous primary component and M=0.200 +/- 0.007 Msun, R=1.238 +/- 0.013 Rsun, L=1.57 +/- 0.09 Lsun for the Roche lobe filling secondary., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, AJ, in press

We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the detached eclipsing binary V209 omega Cen to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. The system exhibits total eclipses and, based on the measured systemic velocity and the derived distance, is a member of the globular cluster omega Cen. We obtain 0.945 +/- 0.043 Msun, 0.983 +/- 0.015 Rsun and 6.68 +/- 0.88 Lsun for the cooler, but larger and more luminous primary component. The secondary component has 0.144 +/- 0.008 Msun, 0.425 +/- 0.008 Rsun and 2.26 +/- 0.28 Lsun. The effective temperatures are estimated at 9370 K for the primary and at 10866 K for the secondary. On the color-magnitude diagram of the cluster, the primary component occupies a position between the tip of the blue straggler region and the extended horizontal branch while the secondary component is located close to the red border of the area occupied by hot subdwarfs. However, its radius is too large and its effective temperature is too low for it to be an sdB star. We propose a scenario leading to the formation of a system with such unusual properties with the primary component ``re-born'' from a former white dwarf which accreted a new envelope through mass transfer from its companion. The secondary star has lost most of its envelope while starting its ascent onto the sub-giant branch. It failed to ignite helium in its core and is currently powered by a hydrogen burning shell., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, AJ, in press

We obtained BV time series photometry for 12 variable stars from the field of the old open cluster NGC 2243. The sample includes 3 newly identified detached/semi-detached binaries. There are now four detached eclipsing binaries which are likely members of the cluster. Determination of the absolute parameters of the components would provide a valuable check on evolutionary models of low-mass stars. An accurate ephemeris and orbital period analysis are presented for the previously-known detached binary NV CMa. We also provide ephemerides for 7 other periodic variables. We present echelle spectroscopic data for five eclipsing binary stars and two giant stars in the field of the open cluster NGC 2243. The average cluster velocity is determined to be +60.4 +- 0.6 km/s. Four of the eclipsing binaries are very likely members of the cluster based on their observed radial velocities. The absolute parameters of cluster member NV CMa are determined by analysing photometric and radial velocity data. We obtain 1.089+-0.010 Msun and 1.221+-0.031 Rsun for the primary, and 1.069+-0.010 Msun and 178+-0.037 Rsun for the secondary. Both components of the binary are located on the Main Sequence, about 1 mag. below the turn-off point on the cluster color-magnitude diagram. Using model age-luminosity and age-radius relations we obtain 4.35+-0.25 Gyr for the age of NV CMa. The derived age is, however, very sensitive to the adopted metallicity of the cluster. We demonstrate that a meaningful determination of the ages of objects like NV CMa based on evolutionary models is possible only if their metallicity is know with a relative accuracy of a few percent. The distance moduli calculated for the components of NV CMa agree closely with each other, and imply an apparent distance modulus of the cluster of (m-M)_V=13.25+-0.08., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, Acta Astronomica, in press

We present the first direct distance determination to a detached eclipsing binary in M33, which was found by the DIRECT Project. Located in the OB 66 association at coordinates (alpha, delta)=(01:33:46.17,+30:44:39.9) for J2000.0, it was one of the most suitable detached eclipsing binaries found by DIRECT for distance determination, given its apparent magnitude and orbital period. We obtained follow-up BV time series photometry, JHKs photometry and optical spectroscopy from which we determined the parameters of the system. It contains two O7 main sequence stars with masses of 33.4+/-3.5 Mo and 30.0+/-3.3 Mo and radii of 12.3+/-0.4 Ro and 8.8+/-0.3 Ro, respectively. We derive temperatures of 37000+/-1500 K and 35600+/-1500 K. Using BVRJHKs photometry for the flux calibration, we obtain a distance modulus of 24.92+/-0.12 mag (964+/-54 kpc), which is ~0.3 mag longer than the Key Project distance to M33. We have conducted a variability survey of the local group galaxy M33 using g', r', and i' observations from 27 nights spanning 17 months made with the MegaPrime/MegaCam instrument on the 3.6 m CFHT telescope. We identify more than 36000 variable sources with g',r',i' < 24 out of approximately 2 million point sources in a one square degree field of view. This increases the number of known variables in this galaxy by more than a factor of 20. In this paper we provide a brief description of the data and a general overview of the variable star population which includes more than 800 candidate variable blue and red supergiant stars, more than 2000 Cepheids, and more than 19000 long period variable AGB and RGB stars., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 20 pages, 16 figures. We present BVI photometry for poorly known southern hemisphere open clusters: NGC 2425, Haffner 10 and Czernik 29. We have calculated the density profile and established the number of stars in each cluster. The colour-magnitude diagrams of the objects show a well-defined main sequence. However, the red giant clump is present only in NGC 2425 and Haffner 10. For these two clusters we estimated the age as 2.5 +/- 0.5 Gyr assuming metallicity of Z=0.008. The apparent distance moduli are in the ranges 13.2<(m-M)_V<13.6 and 14.3<(m-M)_V<14.7, while heliocentric distances are estimated to be 2.9

We report the identification of a new cataclysmic variable (denoted as CV2) and a probable microlensing event in the field of the globular cluster M22. Two outbursts were observed for CV2. During one of them superhumps with P_sh=0.08875 d were present in the light curve. CV2 has an X-ray counterpart detected by XMM-Newton. A very likely microlensing event at a radius of 2.3 arcmin from the cluster center was detected. It had an amplitude of Delta_V=0.75 mag and a characteristic time of 15.9 days. Based on model considerations we show that the most likely configuration has the source in the Galactic bulge with the lens in the cluster.
