Radiocarbon dating methods typically assume that there are no significant tropospheric [sup.14]C[O.sub.2] gradients within the low- to mid-latitude zone of the Northern Hemisphere. Comparison of tree ring [sup.14]C data from southern Germany and Anatolia supports this assumption in genera[ but also documents episodes of significant short-term regional [sup.14]C[O.sub.2] offsets. We suggest that the offset is caused by an enhanced seasonal [sup.14]C[O.sub.2] cycle, with seasonally peaked flux of stratospheric [sup.14]C into the troposphere during periods of low solar magnetic activity, coinciding with substantial atmospheric cooling. The high-precision 14C determinations of timber samples from Anatolian archaeological sites give the probable absolute dating of a tree-ring chronology of 1,503 years with far-reaching implications for Old World archaeology and prehistory. The 14C determinations are carried out on a series of decadal samples and the radiocarbon ages are wiggle-matched to the precise decadal variation data for European wood. A study exploits a growth anomaly in the 17th century BC to provide dating of the dendrochronology within narrow limits.
