1. Identifying Effective Pedagogical Approaches for Online Workplace Training: A Case Study of the South African Wood Products Manufacturing Sector

Abstract

This study investigated appropriate pedagogical techniques for workplace e-learning programs in the South African wood products (furniture) manufacturing sector. The study found that learners responded favourably to constructivist teaching approaches, such as asynchronous discussions, open-ended task-based activities, and assignments incorporating authentic, real-world examples. Learners viewed constructivist activities to be more useful than quizzes and traditional essay-based assignments, as they allowed new concepts to be learned in context and were perceived to promote deeper understanding of the subject matter. Nevertheless, they valued the inclusion of a blend of pedagogical approaches in the course design, as this enabled them to approach and analyze new concepts in an assortment of ways. Learners placed importance on regular interaction with other learners and course instructors, and were strongly in favour of including face-to-face components in Web-based courses. Abstract

Research shows that hypothalamic biochemical neuropeptide Y (NPY) influences animal feeding patterns and may cause obesity. Evidence suggests that rats without NPY controls become obese more rapidly than rats with normal feeding rhythm. Experiments designed to measure the influence of NPY using lean and obese Long-Evans rats are described. Eating habits are evaluated and illustrated.

Current knowledge fails to define the neurobiological processes underlying social behaviour involving the (patho-) physiological mechanisms that link system-level phenomena to the multiple hierarchies of brain function. Unfortunately, such a high complexity may also be associated with a high susceptibility to several pathogenic interventions. Consistently, social deficits sometimes represent the first signs of a number of neuropsychiatric disorders including schizophrenia (SCZ), Alzheimer's disease (AD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) which leads to a progressive social dysfunction. In the present review we summarize present knowledge linking neurobiological substrates sustaining social functioning, social dysfunction and social withdrawal in major psychiatric disorders. Interestingly, AD, SCZ, and MDD affect the social brain in similar ways. Thus, social dysfunction and its most evident clinical expression (i.e., social withdrawal) may represent an innovative transdiagnostic domain, with the potential of being an independent entity in terms of biological roots, with the perspective of targeted interventions.

Abstract

All available synoptic maps of the solid-surface bodies of the Solar System were digitized for presentation in the planned Atlas of the Solar System by Greeley and Batson. Since the last report (Batson et al., 1990), preliminary Uranian satellite maps were replaced with improved versions, Galilean satellite geology was simplified and digitized, structure was added to many maps, and the maps were converted to a standard format, with corresponding standing colors for the mapped units. Following these changes, the maps were re-reviewed by their authors and are now undergoing final editing before preparation for publication. In some cases (for Mercury, Venus, and Mars), more detailed maps were digitized and then simplified for the Atlas. Other detailed maps are planned to be digitized in the coming year for the Moon and the Galilean satellites. For most of the remaining bodies such as the Uranian satellites, the current digitized versions contain virtually all the detail that can be mapped given the available data; those versions will be unchanged for the Atlas. These digital geologic maps are archived at the digital scale of 1/16 degree/ pixel, in sinusoidal format. The availability of geology of the Solar System in a digital database will facilitate comparisons and integration with other data: digitized lunar geologic maps have already been used in a comparison with Galileo SSI observations of the Moon.

Abstract

The study of glass multilayer columns made of ordinary glass using triplexing technology. The main disadvantage of using ordinary glass is the fragile nature of its destruction, it breaks instantly. To avoid this effect, triplexing technology is used: the glass is joined in several layers with an EVASAFE polymer film (Bridgestone, Japan), after which the columns were heated to a temperature of 130 °C and kept for 30 minutes. The film material is an elastomer (a polymer with highly elastic properties in a wide temperature range). This allowed restraining parts of fragments of glass structures, making them plastic inside the bonding plane, increased their reliability, prevented the instantaneous opening of cracks in the depth of the section. A method for studying multilayer glass columns for central-axial compression using the method of two-dimensional digital image correlation is developed. Two series of prototypes were manufactured and tested. The tests were performed on a hydraulic press. The model of the destruction of glass columns of different cross-section is investigated and described. The accuracy of the digital image correlation method using two-dimensional correlation for glass centrally compressed columns is estimated. The results of the digital image correlation method with the results of measurements of absolute deformations by mechanical devices are compared. Based on the analysis of the results, the dependences of relative deformations ε on the applied load N were determined using the digital image correlation method. 47. DETERMINATION OF STRAW PARTICLES LAYER POROSITY

Abstract

The porosity of the bulk layer, the porosity of the beginning of layer fluidization and the porosity of the straw particles fluidized bed on its drying operations are mathematically described. The values of these dimensions for different values of the density of straw particle, its bulk density, the equivalent diameter and fraction composition (fraction numbers) are determined. The bulk density of straw particles increases in the range from 40 to 120 kg/m3 for the density of straw particle 340 kg/m3, the porosity of its bulk layer decreases from 0.88 to 0.65. The bulk layer porosity decreases from 0.91 to 0.73 for its density of straw particle 440 kg/m3 in the specified interval of its bulk density. The dependences of the bulk layer porosity of straw particle on its intrinsic density, equivalent diameter and fraction composition are analysed. It is defined that bulk layer porosity of straw particle increases with increasing of its equivalent diameter, fractional composition and intrinsic density. The value of the bulk layer porosity within the density of straw particle being 340–440 kg/m3 increases by on 3 % for the fraction -/5 and by 14 % for the fraction 0.315/0. Reducing of the equivalent diameter from 3.6 to 0.16 mm (fraction from -/5 to 0.315/0) leads to reducing the density of the bulk layer by 33 % for the density of straw chips 340 kg/m3 and 25 % for its density 440 kg/m3. The dependence porosity of beginning of fluidization straw particle layer from its density and different fractional composition is also defined; density values kinematic viscosity gas (drying agent) is constant. Under such conditions, the porosity of fluidization beginning of straw particle layer increases with decreasing of its fractional composition and it ranges from 0.378 to 0.399. The proper density of straw particle doesn't substantially influence on the porosity of the fluidization beginning its layer. The value of bulk layer porosity of straw particles is higher than the value of, Математически описаны порозность насыпного слоя, порозность начала псевдоожижения слоя и порозность кипящего слоя соломенной стружки на операции ее сушки. Определены значения данных величин для различных значений собственной плотности соломенной стружки, ее насыпной плотности, эквивалентного диаметра и фракционного состава (номера фракции). Проанализированы зависимости порозности насыпного слоя соломенной стружки от ее собственной плотности, эквивалентного диаметра и фракционного состава. Установлено, что порозность насыпного слоя соломенной стружки возрастает с увеличением ее эквивалентного диаметра, фракционного состава и собственной плотности. Также установлена зависимость порозности начала псевдоожижения слоя соломенной стружки от их собственной плотности и разного фракционного состава при постоянных значениях плотности и кинематической вязкости газа (агента сушки). При таких условиях порозность начала псевдоожижения слоя соломенной стружки увеличивается с уменьшением ее фракционного состава и находится в пределах 0,378–0,399. Собственная плотность соломенной стружки на порозность начала псевдоожижения ее слоя существенного влияния не оказывает. Учитывая, что порозность насыпного слоя соломенной стружки имеет большие значения от значений порозности начала псевдоожижения слоя соломенной стружки, то при выборе показателя порозности кипящего слоя необходимо учитывать значение порозности насыпного слоя., Математично описано порозність насипного шару, порозність початку псевдорозрідження шару та порозність киплячого шару солом'яної стружки на операції її сушіння. Визначено значення цих величин для різних значень власної щільності солом'яної стружки, її насипної щільності, еквівалентного діаметра та фракційного складу (номера фракції). Проаналізовано залежності порозності насипного шару солом'яної стружки від її власної щільності, еквівалентного діаметра та фракційного складу. Встановлено, що порозність насипного шару солом'яної стружки зростає зі збільшенням її еквівалентного діаметра, фракційного складу та власної щільності. Також встановлено залежність порозності початку псевдорозрідження шару солом'яної стружки від їх власної щільності та різного фракційного складу за сталих значень густини та кінематичної в'язкості газу (агента сушіння). За таких умов порозність початку псевдорозрідження шару солом'яної стружки збільшується зі зменшенням її фракційного складу і знаходиться в межах 0,378–0,399. Власна щільність солом'яної стружки на порозність початку псевдорозрідження її шару істотного впливу не чинить. Враховуючи, що значення порозності насипного шару солом'яної стружки є більшою за значення порозності початку псевдорозрідження шару солом'яної стружки, то під час вибору показника порозності киплячого шару потрібно враховувати значення порозності насипного шару.

Abstract

Експериментально досліджено зміни значень pH і Eh у воді і водних розчинах NaCl при 20 ºС під час пропускання чистих газів (N2, O2, повітря без CO2) в різних режимах барботажу. Результати проаналізовано з врахуванням сучасних уявлень про структуру рідкої води і її поверхні (інтерфейсу). Як правило, барботажний процес складається із двох етапів: I – перші 10 хвилин із швидким збільшенням значення рН і зменшенням значення Eh внаслідок вимивання розчинених CO2 і O2; II – до 2–3 годин, коли значення Eh продовжує повільно зменшуватись, а значення pH може як зростати (лужний БХЕ) так і зменшуватись (кислотний БХЕ), що вказує на кислотний характер поверхні газ/вода і утворених при барботажі аерозолів. Спеціальні досліди на магнітній мішалці показали, що помітні зміни pH і Eh починаються лише після переходу перемішування із ламінарного режиму в турбулентний, що приводить до значного підвищення структурної температури води і відповідного зменшення розчинності кисню та величини Eh. Це і є основна причина змін на першому етапі барботажу, який можна назвати турбулентним БХЕ. Окремо потрібно виділити диференціацію йонів під час барботажу у змішаних розчинах солей. Для пояснення явища йонного БХЕ запропонована і обґрунтовано гіпотезу нейтральних йонних пар, яка задовільно пояснює генезис і властивості морських аерозолів. The changes of pH and Eh in water and aqueous NaCl – solutions at 20 °C during the transmission of pure gases (N2, O2, air, CO22) in different modes of barbotage are experimentally investigated. The results are analyzed taking into account modern notions of the structure of liquid water and its surface (interface). Generally, the barbotage process consists of two stages: I – the first 10 minutes with the rapid increasing in pH and decreasing in Eh due to leaching of dissolved CO2 and O2; II – up to 2-3 hours when Eh continues to decrease slowly, but pH can increase (alkaline BCE) or decrease (acid BCE), indicating the acidic nature of gas/water surface and aerosols produced during barbotage. Special experiments on the magnetic stirrer showed that noticeable changes in pH and Eh begin only after the transition from laminar regime of mixing to turbulent, which leads to a significant increasing of the structural temperature of water and a corresponding reduction in the solubility of oxygen and Eh values. This is the main reason for the changes at the first step of barbotage, which can be called as the turbulent BCE. We must highlight the differentiation of ions during barbotage in mixed salt solutions. To explain this phenomenon of ion BCE, the hypothesis of neutral ion pairs has been proposed and substantiated, which satisfactorily explains the genesis and properties of marine aerosols. Экспериментально исследованы изменения значений pH и Eh в воде и водных растворах NaCl при 20 ºС во время пропускания чистых газов (N2, O2, воздуха без CO2) в различных режимах барботажа. Результаты проанализированы с учетом современных представлений о структуре жидкой воды и ее поверхности (интерфейса). Как правило, барботажный процесс состоит из двух этапов: I – первые 10 минут с быстрым увеличением значений рН и уменьшением Eh, вследствие вымывания растворенных CO2 и O2; II – до 2-3 часов, когда Eh продолжают медленно уменьшаться, а pH может как расти (щелочной БХЕ) так и уменьшаться (кислотный БХЕ), что указывает на кислотный характер поверхности раздела фаз газ/вода и аэрозолей, образованных при барботаже. Специальные опыты на магнитной мешалке показали, что заметные изменения значений pH и Eh начинаются только после перехода перемешивания из ламинарного режима в турбулентный, что приводит к значительному повышению структурной температуры воды и соответствует уменьшению растворимости кислорода и величины Eh. Это и есть основная причина изменений на первом этапе барботажа, который можно назвать турбулентным БХЕ. Отдельно нужно выделить дифференциацию ионов при барботаже в смешанных растворах солей. Для объяснения этого явления ионного БХЕ предложена и обоснована гипотеза нейтральных ионных пар, которая удовлетворительно объясняет генезис и свойства морских аэрозолей.

Abstract

В даній роботі на основі визначення показників хімічного складу ґрунтових вод оцінено їхній екологічний стан та ступінь забруднення. Зафіксовано підвищений вміст нітратів, Силіцію, високі значення лужності та загальної жорсткості. Виявлено відхилення показників фізіологічної повноцінності мінерального складу питних вод від нормативних величин. Встановлено, що формування геохімічного складу ґрунтових вод зумовлено впливом факторів геологічного, фізико-хімічного та техногенного походження. Наведено рекомендації щодо зменшення забруднення питної води та покращення її якості. In this paper based on the definition of indicators of the chemical composition of the groundwater its ecological status and degree of contamination is appraised. Increased content of nitrates, silicon, alkalinity and high values of the general hardness were fixed. Deviations of physiological full value of the mineral composition of drinking water from guideline values were revealed. It was established that the formation of geochemical composition of ground water was due to the influence of factors of geological, physical, chemical and man-made origin. Recommendations for reduction of pollution of drinking water and improvement its quality were cited. В данной работе на основе определения показателей химического состава грунтовых вод оценены их экологическое состояние и степень загрязнения. Зафиксировано повышенные содержания нитратов, Кремния, высокие значения щелочности и общей жесткости. Выявлены отклонения показателей физиологической полноценности минерального состава питьевых вод от нормативных величин. Установлено, что формирование геохимического состава грунтовых вод обусловлено влиянием факторов геологического, физико-химического и техногенного происхождения. Приведены рекомендации по уменьшению загрязнения питьевой воды и улучшения ее качества.
