In this study, it was aimed to experiment a new method to increase the quality of the history of mathematics course instruction in the primary mathematics education. The method composed by synthesizing project-based and collaborative learning methods was named "Newspaper Preparation Method," and the course was delivered using this method. Exploratory design, one of the mixed methods in which qualitative and quantitative techniques are both used, was applied in the study. The sample of the study consists of 35 undergraduate students studying in the primary mathematics education department. The quantitative data analyzed through SPSS-25 while qualitative data analyzed through content analysis. The results of data analysis revealed that the pre-service teachers held positive attitudes towards the method. Also, participants realized that they gained skills such as proactivity, research, inquiry, reproductivity, authorship, teamwork, and socializing. Besides, pre-service teachers' prejudices were eliminated against the course, their motivation increased, their curiosity was triggered, and most importantly the pre-service teachers deemed themselves important. Moreover, this method has transformed the course from a boring program into an exciting and enjoyable part of the syllabus. Finally, pre-service teachers stated that they learned the class effectively and permanently, their vocabulary and general knowledge increased, and their computer literacy improved. It is predicted that this study will contribute to the literature through analyzing a hands-on method and inspire those teaching the history of mathematics.

Various emotion elicitation methods are used in many studies assessing the interaction of emotion and cognition. However, most of the experimental and meta-analysis studies comparing emotion elicitation methods have examined the success of emotion evoking in terms of valence and arousal. There are few experimental studies dealing with comparisons within discrete emotion approach. The present study was mainly aimed to determine the most effective emotion elicitation method for discrete emotions. Therefore, three emotion elicitation methods (film, IAPS, imagery) used to evoke three discrete emotions (fear, disgust, happiness) were examined in the framework of discrete, dimensional, and response component model of emotion. Within-subject design was used to examine the coherence of emotional response components such as subjective experience, facial expression, and physiological responses. The results suggested that film was the most effective among all emotion elicitation methods. All emotions elicited using the film method were accompanied not only by intense subjective experiences but also by physiological responses. IAPS and imagination methods successfully elicited subjective experiences of all emotions, except for fear - IAPS condition. This study aims to investigate the predictive validities of three different traffic psychological assessment systems used in Turkey (ART 2020, TRAFIKENT and Vienna Test System) by using systematic observation of driving behaviour in natural traffic settings. For this purpose, 176 drivers were evaluated by observers and then tested in three different traffic psychological assessment systems. Drivers participated in a 45 km (approx. 80 min) driving session consisting of diverse road types. Observers filled systematic observation forms comprising 35 errors/violations on 10 road segments. Furthermore, observers evaluated participants regarding cognitive and psychomotor abilities measured with the psychological assessment system. Consequently, although the systems' power to predict on-road behaviour was similar, the tests/abilities that contributed to the models differed in each system except for the reasoning test. It was recommended to increase the weight of these predictive tests in deciding safe driving for each system.

In this study, we investigated the effects of preharvest oxalic acid (2.5 mM (OA1) and 5 mM (OA2)) and salicylic acid (0.5 mM (SA1) and 1 mM (SA2)) treatments on the storage and quality of blackberry cv. Chester. We applied salicylic acid and oxalic acid to the plants seven and fourteen days before harvest and recorded the physiological, physicochemical, and external appearance characteristics of the fruits during the cold storage period (nine days). The results showed that the treatments decreased ethylene production by 29.5% (SA1) at harvest and by 28.5% (SA2) at the end of the storage period. In addition, the respiration rate was reduced between 13.0% (OA2) and 28.0% (SA2) compared to the control. Although fruit weigh loss increased as storage extended, the highest losses were observed in control with 1.35%. Titratable acidity decreased from harvest (0.46%) to the end of storage (0.39%) in the control, whereas it ranged from 0.52% (SA1) to 0.62% (OA1) in the treatment groups. Malic acid and syringic acid were the dominant organic acid and phenolic, respectively, and although their content decreased continuously in the control group, no loss was observed in the treated groups after the sixth day. These effects were positively reflected in the external appearance of the fruits, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and properties related to antioxidant activity. As a result of the cumulative evaluation of all parameters, it can be suggested that Chester fruits can be stored for nine days in marketable quality with the SA2 applications. Among oxalic acid concentrations, 2.5 mM can be recommended for phytochemical accumulation at harvest and short‐term storage of three days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to reveal the views and expectations of teachers working in Anatolian imam hatip high schools (AIHHS) regarding their students as an important element of the hidden program and to evaluate them in terms of the hidden curriculum. The hidden curriculum is defined as the values, norms and institutional expectations that the administration, teachers and parents want students to acquire, which students do not know exactly at the beginning of their education. Considering this definition and other definitions of the term, the hidden curriculum can be defined as the educational realities that are not specified in the official curriculum in writing, but are intended to shape students' thinking, behaviors and experiences according to the norms and values of the society, which are outside the official curriculum, but also include the way it is implemented and are as effective as it. Evaluation of the opinions and expectations of the teachers working in AIHHS in terms of the hidden curriculum makes it necessary to mention the relationship between the hidden curriculum and religious education, since these high schools are a type of school that provides religious education. Religious education, which is a concept that includes all kinds of learning about religion, includes religious behavior changes based on beliefs, attitudes, knowledge and skills that occur consciously or unconsciously in individuals. The hidden curriculum is as important as the official program in gaining these behaviors to the individual. Because the hidden curriculum is the values and norms and institutional expectations that the administration, teachers and parents want the students to gain. For this reason, although it is not included in the official curriculum, the significance of teacher expectations in these schools is an undeniable educational reality since it allows students to change their behavior in the desired direction and is an element of the hidden program. When the literature is examined, it is seen that the issue of hidden curriculum in the context of imam hatip high schools (IHHS) has not been directly discussed. This study is important in terms of revealing what the views and expectations of teachers, that are an important element of the hidden curriculum, are and how they are reflected in the hidden curriculum of the school in order for students to internalize religious, national and spiritual values. In this context, it is thought that the study will fill an important gap in the literature in terms of both drawing attention to the functionality of the hidden curriculum in religious and value education and leading possible studies in the field. This research was conducted with phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research method designs. Interview was preferred as a data collection tool. The questions in the interview form prepared by the researchers were directed to the participant teachers and the answers given by the teachers were recorded on the forms. The study group of the research consisted of 43 volunteer teachers working in the AIHHS in Konya city center in the 2018-2019 academic year. The collected data were interpreted by content analysis because it was more appropriate for the purpose of the study. The findings of the study are as follows: The most emphasized creedal characteristic is "Ahl al-Sunnah Faith"; the most emphasized moral characteristic is "having an Islamic Ethics on the axis of the Qur'an and Sunnah"; the most emphasized mental characteristic is "using his/her intelligence, thinking, being productive and solution-oriented"; the most emphasized cultural characteristic is "having awareness of national and spiritual culture"; and the most emphasized characteristic regarding his/her social position is "being an exemplary person in Islamic, moral and scientific sense". In addition to these, “advices, examples and various activities outside the curricula regarding national and spiritual values" are the most emphasized aspect regarding of an Imam Hatip Student Spirit that teachers want an AIHHS student to gain. As a result of the research, it was seen that the participant teachers attributed a unique mission to imam hatip high schools students in terms of the representation of religious, national and spiritual values. Chickpea is a nutritious staple pulse with numerous consumption patterns. It is also used in bakery products, especially in bread, in the forms of chickpea flour, fermented-chickpea liquor (FCL), and chickpea yeast (FCL-fermented sourdough) in various countries. However, a large variation exists in the traditional fermentation of FCL and chickpea yeast (CY). In this study, fermentation parameters (cracked-chickpea size, water-chickpea ratio, fermentation temperature, and fermentation time) for the production of FCL and CY were sequentially optimized through separate RSM designs. Therefore, this study aimed at optimization of the fermentation conditions for the preparations of both FCL and CY. First, FCL production parameters of fermentation temperature, time, chickpea particle size, and waterchickpea ratio were optimized and determined to be 40°C, 26 h, 2-6 mm, and 4:1 ratio, respectively. Secondly, the CY process parameters (fermentation temperature and time) were optimized using the optimized FCL conditions and determined to be 38°C and 9 h. The validation studies proved that there is no statistical difference (p>0.05) between the RSM-model predicted and experimental responses. At the optimized fermentation conditions, the FCL and CY had pH values of 4.44 and 4.31, and LAB counts of 9.87 and 9.08 log cfu g-1. The optimum fermentation conditions determined in this study are somewhat comparable to those commonly employed in the traditional preparations of both FCL and CY. In the present study, the effects of pre-harvest oxalic acid (OA) treatment on the quality of minimally processed leek during storage under marketing conditions were investigated. For this purpose, leek plants were treated with a solution containing 0 (control), 1, 2 and 3 mM OA and 0.1 % Tween 20 with a pump 6, 4 and 2 weeks before harvest. Leek samples, harvested at optimum stage, were immediately transferred to the laboratory and sorted, washed and minimally processed. After all these treatments, leeks were placed in foam plates and covered with stretch film (12 μ). The packaged leeks were stored at 12±1 °C and 90±5 % relative humidity (RH) for 21 days. The OA treatment decreased weight loss and preserved firmness of minimally processed leeks compared to control. The respiration rate of OA treated leeks was clearly suppressed during storage. Although it was not statistically significant, the OA treatments preserved the visual quality of the leeks relatively better than control samples during storage. The effect of preharvest OA treatment on the color change of leeks except for L* value was not clear. As a result, it was determined that pre-harvest OA treated leeks could be stored for 14 days under marketing conditions (12±1°C and 90±5 % RH). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of preharvest salicylic acid (SA) treatments on some oil quality and characteristics of fresh thyme (Origanum onites L.) during storage were investigated. The thyme plants were grouped in three blocks for each SA treatment in an orchard. The first group of plants was treated with 1.5 mM SA 20 days before the bloom stage. The second and third group thymes were treated with 1.5 mM SA and only tap water (control), respectively, 10 days before full bloom. The thyme plants harvested at the full bloom stage were transported immediately to the laboratory. The thyme samples were placed in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) bags and were stored at 1°C and 90 ± 3% relative humidity (RH) for 25 days. Weight loss, leaf color, respiration rate, gas composition in MAP, ethylene production, essential oil and carvacrol content, and sensory quality of thymes were determined during cold storage. SA-treated thymes gave better visual quality, respiration rate, carvacrol content, and ethylene production than the control. As a result, it was determined that preharvest SA treatment could be a promising tool for delaying quality losses in thyme during storage in MAP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of pre- and postharvest calcium gluconate (Ca-Glu) treatments on some physicochemical characteristics and bioactive compounds of sweet cherry cv. Sweetheart during cold storage were investigated. For preharvest treatments, the Ca-Glu (1%) solution was applied to the cherry trees two times at 21 and 35 days after full bloom stage. Control trees were sprayed with distilled water at the same days. Sweet cherries, sprayed with and without Ca-Glu, were dipped into cold water (4 °C) containing calcium gluconate (1%) for 30 s and only in cold water (4 °C) as control, after harvest Following each treatment, cherries were placed in plastic boxes and stored at 1 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% relative humidity for 3 weeks. The weight losses of cherries increased over time but calcium (Ca) treatments, especially pre-and postharvest combination, limited these increases compared to control groups. The best result for suppressing the respiration rate of cherries was also obtained from combined treatment. Moreover, combined treatment delayed the losses of titratable acidity, fruit firmness, decay rate and sensory quality in sweet cherries during storage comparison with the pre or postharvest application of Ca-Glu alone. The effect of Ca-Clu treatments on stem chlorophyll content and antioxidant activity was not significant. Preharvest and combined treatments retarded the loss of ascorbic acid content of cherries compared to postharvest and control treatments. The total phenolic and anthocyanin content increased regularly throughout storage, regardless of treatment; however, Ca treatments delayed the accumulation of these compounds. As a result, the combined Ca-Glu treatment could be a promising method for maintaining some physicochemical characteristics and bioactive compounds in sweet cherries during cold storage.
