Abstract

Tau neutrino is the least studied lepton of the Standard Model (SM). The NA65/DsTau experiment targets to investigate $D_s$, the parent particle of the $\nu_\tau$, using the nuclear emulsion-based detector and to decrease the systematic uncertainty of $\nu_\tau$ flux prediction from over 50% to 10% for future beam dump experiments. In the experiment, the emulsion detectors are exposed to the CERN SPS 400 GeV proton beam. To provide optimal conditions for the reconstruction of interactions, the protons are required to be uniformly distributed over the detector's surface with an average density of $10^5~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ and the fluctuation of less than 10%. To address this issue, we developed a new proton irradiation system called the target mover. The new target mover provided irradiation with a proton density of $0.98~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ and the density fluctuation of $2.0\pm 0.3$% in the DsTau 2021 run., Comment: 9 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

In the DsTau experiment at the CERN SPS, an independent and direct way to measure tau neutrino production following high energy proton interactions was proposed. As the main source of tau neutrinos is a decay of Ds mesons, produced in proton-nucleus interactions, the project aims at measuring a differential cross section of this reaction. The experimental method is based on a use of high resolution emulsion detectors for effective registration of events with short lived particle decays. Here we present the motivation of the study, details of the experimental technique, and the first results of the analysis of the data collected during test runs, which prove feasibility of the full scale study of the process in future.

Abstract

We promote the precise gamma-ray observation project Gamma-Ray Astro-Imager with Nuclear Emulsion (GRAINE), which uses balloon-borne emulsion gamma-ray telescopes. The emulsion telescope realizes observations with high angular resolution, polarization sensitivity, and large aperture area in the 0.01--100 GeV energy region. Herein, we report the data analysis of emulsion tracks and the first demonstration of gamma-ray imaging via an emulsion telescope by using the flight data from the balloon experiment performed in 2015 (GRAINE 2015). The emulsion films were scanned by the latest read-out system for a total area of 41 m$^2$ in three months, and then the gamma-ray event selection was automatically processed. Millions of electron-pair events are accumulated in the balloon-borne emulsion telescope. The emulsion telescope detected signals from a calibration source (gamma rays from the interaction of cosmic rays with an aluminum plate) with a high significance during the balloon observation and created a gamma-ray image consistent with the source size and the expected angular resolution in the energy range of 100--300 MeV. The flight performance obtained in the GRAINE 2015 experiment proves that balloon-borne emulsion telescope experiments with larger area are feasible while maintaining expected imaging performance., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

Topological and kinematical characteristics of hadron interactions have been studied using a lead-emulsion target exposed to 2, 4 and 10 GeV/c hadron beams. A total length of 60 m $\pi^-$ tracks was followed using a high speed automated emulsion scanning system. A total of 318 hadron interaction vertices and their secondary charged particle tracks were reconstructed. Measurement results of interaction lengths, charged particle multiplicity, emission angles and momenta of secondary charged particles are compared with a Monte Carlo simulation and appear to be consistent. Nuclear fragments emitted from interaction vertices were also detected by a newly developed emulsion scanning system with wide-angle acceptance. Their emission angle distributions are in good agreement with the simulated distributions. Probabilities of an event being associated with at least one fragment track are found to be greater than 50% for beam momentum $P > 4$ GeV/c and are well reproduced by the simulation. These experimental results validate estimation of the background due to hadron interactions in the sample of $\tau$ decay candidates in the OPERA $\nu_{\mu} \to \nu_{\tau}$ oscillation experiment., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Detecting the first electron pairs with nuclear emulsion allows a precise measurement of the direction of incident gamma-rays as well as their polarization. 21. Enantiomer separation of 2‐halomandelic acids via diastereomeric salt formation with chiral N‐substituted 2‐amino‐2‐phenylethanols.

Abstract

Chiral N‐substituted secondary 1,2‐aminoalcohols have been developed for the enantioseparation of ortho‐halomandelic acids (o‐X‐MAs) via diastereomeric salt formation. Two structural isomers, N‐methyl‐2‐amino‐1,2‐diphenylethanol and N‐benzyl‐2‐amino‐2‐phenylethanol, showed high separation abilities for o‐X‐MAs (X = Cl, Br, I). The chiral recognition mechanism was elucidated by crystallographic analysis of the less‐soluble salts. The substituents on the nitrogen atom of the resolving agents and the inclusion of the crystallization solvent stabilized the salt and enhanced their separation ability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

金沢工業大学と国際高等専門学校は，高専大学連携の一環として，大学所属の著者らが高専の数理科目を担当している．本年の新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大を受けて，国際高等専門学校では，第1 週の授業は科目を制限して対面授業を行い，第2 週の授業からZoom を用いた遠隔授業に移行した．そこで，著者らは共同で，授業改善のための複数人での授業運営，時間外の質問対応のためのサポート教室の運営を行った．本稿では，2020 年度前学期授業期間において，著者らがもつICT 技術を利用したこの実践に対する，教員側・学生側の視点からの評価と課題について論じる．;At Kanazawa Institute of Technology and International College of Technology, as part of collaboration, the authors are in charge of mathematical science courses at International College of Technology. In response to the spread of COVID-19 this year, the lessons of the first week were limited face-to-face lessons, and the second and subsequent weeks’ lessons were shifted to distance lessons using Zoom. Therefore, the authors jointly operated the lessons with multiple teaching staffs for smooth lessons. Furthermore, the authors operated the learning support classes for answering overtime questions. In this paper, we discuss the evaluation and challenges from the perspective of teachers and students to this practice using the ICT technology possessed by the authors during the class period of the Spring semester in 2020.

Abstract

The study on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) integrated approach in improving students’ physics conceptual understanding in Indonesia was conducted following the quasi-experimental research design. Samples were determined using purposive sampling involving 30 students. The study sought to determine whether the STEM integrated approach can improve students’ physics conceptual understanding. Based on the findings, students agreed that the STEM integrated approach can improve physics conceptual understanding. Further, a significant difference in the scores of the students before and after the conduct of STEM integrated approach was observed and a significant relationship was obtained between students’ test scores and students’ level of agreement in the implementation of STEM integrated approach. Thus, the STEM integrated approach improved students’ physics conceptual understanding. It is recommended that seminars, workshops, and in-service training should be organized for effective implementation of the STEM integrated approach in the classroom.

Abstract

Digital archives for nuclear emulsion data of past experiments, such as in cosmic-ray and accelerator physics, is being studied and prepared. Significant progress of HTS, which is an automatic read-out system for tracks recorded in emulsion, is achieving a read-out speed of about 1m2/hour and opens a possibility to read all tracks recorded in emulsion of past experiments. Current status of our first trial with RUNJOB emulsion plates is reported. Till now, the top-most 10 plates had been scanned by HTS and preliminary data is presented.

Abstract

Enantioseparation of 3-hydroxycarboxylic acids via diastereomeric salt formation was demonstrated using 2-amino-1,2-diphenylethanol (ADPE) and cinchonidine as the resolving agents. Racemic 3-hydroxy-4-phenylbutanoic acid (rac-1), 3-hydroxy-4-(4-chlorophenyl)butanoic acid (rac-2), and 3-hydroxy-5-phenylpentanoic acid (rac-3) were efficiently resolved using these resolving agents. Moreover, the successive crystallization of the less-soluble diastereomeric salt of 1 and cinchonidine using EtOH yielded pure (R)-1 · cinchonidine salt in a high yield. The crystal structures of less-soluble diastereomeric salts were elucidated and it was revealed that hydrogen bonding and CH/π interactions play an important role in reinforcing the structure of the less-soluble diastereomeric salts. Abstract

We investigate the binding/dissociation process of ligand molecule from carbonicanhydrase (CA) I carbonic anhydrase (CA) I enzyme by using all-atom moleculardynamics simulation. The force field parameters of zinc ion in the CA I active site are estimatedby quantum chemical calculations and are summarized in this paper. The free energyprofile for binding/dissociation process of ligand from CA I active site is calculated by thethermodynamic integration combined with the all-atom molecular dynamics simulation. Thebinding free energy as a function of the distance between the center of mass positions of CAI active site and the ligand molecule is estimated. The radial distribution function of theCA I-ligand complex is calculated from the trajectory of all-atom molecular dynamics (MD)simulation. We estimate the free energy surface from the radial distribution function. Wecan obtain the bond constant of the equilibrium state from the value of the free energy surface.We discuss the binding/dissociation process of ligand molecule by calculating the freeenergy profile to know the stability of the CA I-ligand complex with some thermodynamicproperties such as the binding free energy, the equilibrium state of the free energy surfaceand so on.
