This article discusses the development of new devices and tools to address historical bias in medical diagnoses. It highlights the example of the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which inaccurately portrayed kidney function in Black patients due to an adjustment in the algorithm. Similar biases have been found in spirometry, a test for lung function, leading to misdiagnoses and untreated lung diseases in certain populations. Efforts are being made to change these algorithms and instruments to reduce disparities and eliminate race as a variable in medical diagnoses. The article also emphasizes the need for critical thinking in healthcare and the potential for bias introduced by AI and diagnostic instruments. [Extracted from the article]
