2. Optical Properties and Applications of Diffraction Grating Using Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance with Metal Nano-Hemispheres

This study investigates the optical properties of diffraction gratings using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) with metal nano-hemispheres. We fabricated metal nano-hemisphere gratings (MNHGS) with Ga, Ag, and Au and examined their wavelength-selective diffraction properties. Our findings show that these gratings exhibit peak diffraction efficiencies at 300 nm, 500 nm, and 570 nm, respectively, corresponding to the LSPR wavelengths of each metal. The MNHGs were created through thermal nanoimprint and metal deposition, followed by annealing. The experimental and simulation results confirmed that the MNHGs selectively diffract light at their resonance wavelengths. Applying these findings to third-order nonlinear laser spectroscopy (MPT-TG method) enhances measurement sensitivity by reducing background noise through the selective diffraction of pump light while transmitting probe light. This innovation promises a highly sensitive method for observing subtle optical phenomena, enhancing the capabilities of nonlinear laser spectroscopy.

3. Tunable Plasmon Resonance in Silver Nanodisk-on-Mirror Structures and Scattering Enhancement by Annealing

In this study, we evaluated the surface plasmon characteristics of periodic silver nanodisk structures fabricated on a dielectric thin-film spacer layer on a Ag mirror substrate (NanoDisk on Mirror: NDoM) through finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations and experiments involving actual sample fabrication. Through FDTD simulations, it was confirmed that the NDoM structure exhibits two sharp peaks in the visible range, and by adjusting the thickness of the spacer layer and the size of the nanodisk structure, sharp peaks can be obtained across the entire visible range. Additionally, we fabricated the NDoM structure using electron beam lithography (EBL) and experimentally confirmed that the obtained peaks matched the simulation results. Furthermore, we discovered that applying annealing at an appropriate temperature to the fabricated structure enables the adjustment of the resonance peak wavelength and enhances the scattering intensity by approximately five times. This enhancement is believed to result from changes in the shape and size of the nanodisk structure, as well as a reduction in grain boundaries in the metal crystal due to annealing. These results have the potential to contribute to technological advancements in various application fields, such as optical sensing and emission enhancement.

4. 3D image scanning of gravel soil using in-situ X-ray computed tomography

Abstract A typical ground investigation for characterizing geotechnical properties of soil requires sampling soils to test in a laboratory. Laboratory X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been used to non-destructively observe soils and characterize their properties using image processing, numerical analysis, or three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques based on scanned images; however, if it becomes possible to scan the soils in the ground, it may enable the characterization without sampling them. In this study, an in-situ X-ray CT scanning system comprising a drilling machine with an integrated CT scanner was developed. A model test was conducted on gravel soil to verify if the equipment can drill and scan the soil underground. Moreover, image processing was performed on acquired 3D CT images to verify the image quality; the particle morphology (particle size and shape characteristics) was compared with the results obtained for projected particles captured in a two-dimensional (2D) manner by a digital camera. The equipment successfully drilled to a target depth of 800 mm, and the soil was scanned at depths of 700, 750, and 800 mm. Image processing results showed a reasonable agreement between the 3D and 2D particle morphology images, and confirmed the feasibility of the in-situ X-ray CT scanning system.

5. A case of invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma presenting with massive bronchorrhea

An 80-year-old non-smoking woman was admitted to hospital due to persistent sputum production and dyspnea. She developed respiratory failure, and chest imaging revealed multifocal consolidation and cavities. Her respiratory status did not respond to antimicrobial treatment and progressively worsened, with massive sputum production of approximately 1 L per day, and she died 19 days after admission. The patient was diagnosed with invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma based on a postmortem needle biopsy of the lung. Clinicians should consider invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma in the differential diagnosis of patients who present with massive bronchorrhea and diffuse pulmonary cavity abnormalities.

6. Evaluation of Phototoxicity of Short-Wavelength Laser Light Utilizing PCNA Accumulation

In recent years, diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinal pigment degeneration caused by excessive exposure to short-wavelength visible light have become significant concerns. With the aim of quantitatively evaluating the toxicity of short-wavelength light, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) accumulation at the irradiation site was investigated using live cell imaging techniques to irradiate individual living cells with short-wavelength laser light. By examining the dependency of PCNA accumulation on the irradiation site within the cells and their cell cycle, it was observed that PCNA accumulation occurred only when the cell nucleus of cells in the S phase of the cell cycle was irradiated. We investigated the accumulation of PCNA at the laser irradiation site using laser light at wavelengths of 405 nm and 375 nm, with intensities ranging from 0.5 μW to 9.0 μW. The results confirmed an increase in PCNA accumulation with increasing intensity, and a higher accumulation was observed with laser light irradiation at a wavelength of 375 nm compared to 405 nm. By comparing the PCNA accumulation and 24 h cell viability, we demonstrated the feasibility of quantitatively assessing laser light toxicity through the measurement of PCNA accumulation.

7. Novel Plasmonic Metamaterials Based on Metal Nano-Hemispheres and Metal-Dielectric Composites

We introduce a groundbreaking plasmonic metamaterial, the Nano-Hemisphere on Hyperbolic Metamaterial (NHoHMM), which involves the fabrication of Ag nano-hemispheres on a multilayered Ag/SiO2 structure, achieved solely through sputtering and heat treatment. Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulations unveil the intriguing slow propagation of the localized electric field, where light travels at only 1/40th of its usual speed within this structure. These simulations reveal distinctive sharp absorption peaks in the visible spectrum, attributed to surface plasmon resonance. In practical experiments, the NHoHMM structure, characterized by random Ag nano-hemispheres, exhibits broad absorption peaks spanning the visible range, rendering it a versatile broadband optical absorber. For comparison, the optical properties of the Ag nano-hemispheres on a nanocermet (NHoNC) structure were analyzed through simultaneous sputtering of Ag and SiO2 followed by heat treatment. Simulations employing effective medium theory and the transfer matrix method demonstrate variable optical properties dependent on the Ag filling ratio in the nanocermet structure. The results obtained differ from the spectra of the NHoHMM structure; thus, it is concluded that in the NHoHMM structure, the calculated multi-peaks are broadened due to the inhomogeneity of the nano-hemispherical structure’s size, rather than the metal/dielectric multilayer structure being altered by the heat treatment.

This paper delves into the strategic design and optimization of silver (Ag) nanostructured arrays within plasmonic metamaterials, targeting the enhancement of imaging sensitivity. Leveraging Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations, our research rigorously compares various Ag nanostructured geometries, including nanospheres, nanocones, nanodisks, and nanocubes. The aim is to pinpoint configurations that significantly enhance electric field localization on the surfaces of nanostructures, a pivotal factor. The nanocube array exhibits superior field enhancement, particularly in narrow nanogaps, suggesting its suitability for high-sensitivity applications. Further exploration into nanocube arrays reveals the crucial role of nanogap size and spacer layer thickness in tuning the optical properties through the manipulation of Fabry–Pérot and mirror image modes in metal–insulator–metal (MIM) structures. By presenting a thorough analysis of these nanostructured arrays, the study not only contributes to our understanding of the fundamental principles governing plasmonic metamaterials but also provides a solid foundation for future innovation in highly sensitive imaging applications. It underscores the importance of nanostructure design and optimization in achieving significant improvements in the performance of plasmonic devices, marking a pivotal step forward in the field of nanophotonics and its application to sensitive imaging technologies.

Abstract Non-invasive blood glucose sensing can be achieved using mid-infrared spectroscopy, although no practical device based on this method has yet been developed. Here, we propose mid-infrared passive spectroscopic imaging for glucose measurements from a distance. Spectroscopic imaging of thermal radiation from the human body enabled, for the first time in the world, the detection of glucose-induced luminescence from a distance. In addition, glucose emission spectra of the wrist acquired at regular intervals up to 60 min showed that there was a strong correlation between the glucose emission intensity and blood glucose level measured using an invasive sensor. Thus, the new technology proposed here is expected to be applied to real-time monitoring of diabetic patients to detect hypoglycemic attacks during sleep and to detect hyperglycemia in a population. Moreover, this technology could lead to innovations that would make it possible to remotely measure a variety of substances.

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most prevalent form of dementia, is a debilitating, progressive neurodegeneration. Amino acids play a wide variety of physiological and pathophysiological roles in the nervous system, and their levels and disorders related to their synthesis have been related to cognitive impairment, the core feature of AD. Our previous multicenter trial showed that hachimijiogan (HJG), a traditional Japanese herbal medicine (Kampo), has an adjuvant effect for Acetylcholine estelase inhibitors (AChEIs) and that it delays the deterioration of the cognitive dysfunction of female patients with mild AD. However, there are aspects of the molecular mechanism(s) by which HJG improves cognitive dysfunction that remain unclear.Objectives: To elucidate through metabolomic analysis the mechanism(s) of HJG for mild AD based on changes in plasma metabolites.Methods: Sixty-seven patients with mild AD were randomly assigned to either an HJG group taking HJG extract 7.5 g/day in addition to AChEI or to a control group treated only with AChEI (HJG:33, Control:34). Blood samples were collected before, 3 months, and 6 months after the first drug administration. Comprehensive metabolomic analyses of plasma samples were done by optimized LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS methods. The web-based software MetaboAnalyst 5.0 was used for partial least square-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) to visualize and compare the dynamics of changes in the concentrations of the identified metabolites.Results: The VIP (Variable Importance in Projection) score of the PLS-DA analysis of female participants revealed a significantly higher increase in plasma metabolite levels after HJG administration for 6 months than was seen in the control group. In univariate analysis, the aspartic acid level of female participants showed a significantly higher increase from baseline after HJG administration for 6 months when compared with the control group.Conclusion: Aspartic acid was a major contributor to the difference between the female HJG and control group participants of this study. Several metabolites were shown to be related to the mechanism of HJG effectiveness for mild AD.

Rationale & Objective: Chronic kidney disease, defined by albuminuria and/or reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), has been reported to be associated with brain atrophy and/or higher white matter lesion volume (WMLV), but there are few large-scale population-based studies assessing this issue. This study aimed to examine the associations between the urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) and eGFR levels and brain atrophy and WMLV in a large-scale community-dwelling older population of Japanese. Study Design: Population-based cross-sectional study. Setting & Participants: A total of 8,630 dementia-free community-dwelling Japanese aged greater than or equal to 65 years underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging scanning and screening examination of health status in 2016-2018. Exposures: UACR and eGFR levels. Outcomes: The total brain volume (TBV)-to-intracranial volume (ICV) ratio (TBV/ICV), the regional brain volume-to-TBV ratio, and the WMLV-to-ICV ratio (WMLV/ICV). Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegeneration and is the most prevalent form of dementia. Intervention at an early stage is imperative. Although three acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) are currently approved for the treatment of mild AD, they are not sufficiently effective. Novel treatments for mild AD are of utmost importance.Objective: To assess the effectiveness of hachimijiogan (HJG), a traditional Japanese herbal medicine (Kampo), in the treatment of mild AD.Methods: This exploratory, open-label, randomized, multicenter trial enrolled patients with mild AD whose score on the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) was over 21points. All participants had been taking the same dosage of AChEI for more than 3 months. The participants were randomly assigned to an HJG group taking HJG extract 7.5 g/day in addition to AChEI or to a control group treated only with AChEI. The primary outcome was the change from baseline to 6 months post treatment initiation on the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive component- Japanese version(ADAS-Jcog). The secondary outcomes were change from baseline of the Instrumental Activity of Daily Life (IADL), Apathy scale, and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) -Q score.Results: Among the 77 enrollees, the data of 69(34 HJG and 35 control)were available for analysis. The difference in the change of ADAS-Jcog from baseline to 6 months of the HJG and control groups was 1.29 (90% Confidence interval (CI), −0.74 to 3.32 p = 0.293). In the subgroup analysis, the differences in the change from baseline to 3 and 6 months for women were 3.70 (90% CI ,0.50 to 6.91, p = 0.059) and 2.90 (90% CI,0.09 to 5.71, p = 0.090), respectively. For patients over 65 years, the difference at 3 months was 2.35 (90%CI, 0.01 to 4.68 p = 0.099). No significant differences were found between the HJG and control groups in IADL score, Apathy scale, or NPI-Q score.Conclusion: Although not conclusive, our data indicate that HJG has an adjuvant effect for acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and that it delays the deterioration of the cognitive dysfunction of mild Altzheimer’s disease patients.Clinical Trial Registration:http://clinicaltrials.gov Japan Registry of clinical trials, identifier jRCTs 071190018

Background The AT(N) classification was proposed for categorising individuals according to biomarkers. However, AT(N) profiles may vary depending on the markers chosen and the target population.Methods We stratified 177 individuals who participated in the Japanese Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative by AT(N) classification according to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. We compared the frequency of AT(N) profiles between the classification using total tau and neurofilament light chain (NfL) as N markers (AT(N)tau and AT(N)NfL). Baseline characteristics, and longitudinal biological and clinical changes were examined between AT(N) profiles.Results We found that 9% of cognitively unimpaired subjects, 49% of subjects with mild cognitive impairment, and 61% of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) dementia had the biological AD profile (ie, A+T+) in the cohort. The frequency of AT(N) profiles substantially differed between the AT(N)tau and AT(N)NfL classifications. When we used t-tau as the N marker (AT(N)tau), those who had T− were more frequently assigned to (N)−, whereas those who had T+were more frequently assigned to (N)+ than when we used NfL as the N marker (AT(N)NfL). During a follow-up, the AD continuum group progressed clinically and biologically compared with the normal biomarker group in both the AT(N)tau and AT(N)NfL classifications. More frequent conversion to dementia was observed in the non-AD pathological change group in the AT(N)tau classification, but not in the AT(N)NfL classification.Conclusions AT(N)tau and AT(N)NfL in CSF may capture different aspects of neurodegeneration and provide a different prognostic value. The AT(N) classification aids in understanding the AD continuum biology in various populations.

Abstract Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) was performed in the deep ultraviolet (UVC) region with Al nanohemisphere structures fabricated by means of a simple method using a combination of vapor deposition, sputtering, and thermal annealing without top-down nanofabrication technology such as electron beam lithography. The LSPR in the UV region was obtained and tuned by the initial metal film thickness, annealing temperature, and dielectric spacer layer thickness. Moreover, we achieved a flexible tuning of the LSPR in a much deeper UVC region below 200 nm using a nanohemisphere on a mirror (NHoM) structure. NHoM is a structure in which a metal nanohemisphere is formed on a metal substrate that is interposed with an Al2O3 thin film layer. In the experimental validation, Al and Ga were used for the metal hemispheres. The LSPR spectrum of the NHoM structures was split into two peaks, and the peak intensities were enhanced and sharpened. The shorter branch of the LSPR peak appeared in the UVC region below 200 nm. Both the peak intensities and linewidth were flexibly tuned by the spacer thickness. This structure can contribute to new developments in the field of deep UV plasmonics.

In this study, we demonstrate the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible range by using nanostructures on mirrors. The nanohemisphere-on-mirror (NHoM) structure is based on random nanoparticles that were obtained by heat-treating silver thin films and does not require any top-down nanofabrication processes. We were able to successfully tune over a wide wavelength range and obtain full colors using the NHoM structures, which realized full coverage of the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) standard RGB (sRGB) color space. Additionally, we fabricated the periodic nanodisk-on-glass (NDoG) structure using electron beam lithography and compared it with the NHoM structure. Our analysis of dark-field microscopic images observed by a hyperspectral camera showed that the NHoM structure had less variation in the resonant wavelength by observation points compared with the periodic NDoG structure. In other words, the NHoM structure achieved a high color quality that is comparable to the periodic structure. Finally, we proposed colorimetric sensing as an application of the NHoM structure. We confirmed the significant improvement in performance of colorimetric sensing using the NHoM structure and succeeded in colorimetric sensing using protein drops. The ability to fabricate large areas in full color easily and inexpensively with our proposed structures makes them suitable for industrial applications, such as displays, holograms, biosensing, and security applications.

Subjects were assigned to a 6‐month intervention‐first/6‐month observation‐second (INT‐OBS) group or an OBS‐INT group. A 32-year-old man who had worked as a welder for 13 years was hospitalized for a fever and hemosputum with dyspnea. He was diagnosed with welding fume-associated lung disease with alveolar hemorrhaging and acute respiratory failure. Despite surviving the acute phase with corticosteroid therapy, hypoxemia persisted after a month and a half, requiring home oxygen therapy. As a result of the introduction of nintedanib, his clinical findings gradually improved, and the patient was weaned from oxygen therapy after six months. Inhalation of a large amount of welding fumes in a short period can cause alveolar hemorrhaging and prolonged pulmonary dysfunction.

Abstract Background Procalcitonin (PCT) is a useful marker for pneumonia. However, its clinical usefulness in elderly patients has not been studied extensively. This study aimed to assess the relationship between PCT and prognosis and pneumonia severity in elderly patients with pneumonia acquired outside the hospital. Methods Data considered relevant to pneumonia severity and prognosis were retrospectively obtained from clinical charts of all patients with pneumonia who were admitted to our hospital from 2010 to 2017. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality in elderly patients (aged ≥75 years), and the relationship between PCT levels and pneumonia severity, as determined by the pneumonia severity index (PSI) was also examined. Results Data were collected from 667 patients, of which 436 were elderly patients. Multivariate and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that albumin, body mass index, and PSI class rather than PCT are important factors related to 30-day mortality in elderly patients. Background: In this study, we examined the construct validity, concurrent validity concerning other standard scales, intrarater reliability, and changes in scores at 12 weeks of the previously developed ABC Dementia Scale (ABC-DS), a novel assessment tool for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Methods: Data were obtained from 312 patients diagnosed with either AD or mild cognitive impairment. The scores on the ABC-DS and standard scales were compared. Results: The 13 items of the ABC-DS are grouped into three domains, and the domain-level scores were highly correlated with the corresponding conventional scales. Statistically significant changes in assessment scores after 12 weeks were observed for the total ABC-DS scores. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate the ABC-DS to have good validity and reliability, and its usefulness in busy clinical settings.

20. Association between exercise habits and subcortical gray matter volumes in healthy elderly people: A population-based study in Japan

Background and aims: The relationship between exercise and subcortical gray matter volume is not well understood in the elderly population, although reports indicate that exercise may prevent cortical gray matter atrophy. To elucidate this association in the elderly, we measured subcortical gray matter volume and correlated this with volumes to exercise habits in a community-based cohort study in Japan. Methods: Subjects without mild cognitive impairment or dementia (n = 280, 35% male, mean age 73.1 ± 5.9 years) were evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), an exercise habit questionnaire, and brain magnetic resonance imaging. Subcortical gray matter volume was compared between groups based on the presence/absence of exercise habits. The MMSE was re-administered 3 years after the baseline examination. Results: Ninety-one subjects (32.5%) reported exercise habits (exercise group), and 189 subjects (67.5%) reported no exercise habits (non-exercise group). Volumetric analysis revealed that the volumes in the exercise group were greater in the left hippocampus (p = 0.042) and bilateral nucleus accumbens (left, p = 0.047; right, p = 0.007) compared to those of the non-exercise group. Among the 195 subjects who received a follow-up MMSE examination, the normalized intra-cranial volumes of the left nucleus accumbens (p = 0.004) and right amygdala (p = 0.014)showed significant association with a decline in the follow-up MMSE score. Conclusion: Subjects with exercise habits show larger subcortical gray matter volumes than subjects without exercise habits in community-dwelling elderly subjects in Japan. Specifically, the volume of the nucleus accumbens correlates with both exercise habits and cognitive preservation.

Background: The prevalence of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) in Japan is unknown. An epidemiological survey study of FTLD was undertaken in Tottori Prefecture, a district in the western region of Japan. Methods: Hospitals in Tottori Prefecture were surveyed by a two-step questionnaire in 2010, and the prevalence of FTLD per 100,000 inhabitants was calculated using the actual number of patients and inhabitants in Tottori Prefecture on the prevalence day of October 1, 2010. Results: In this survey, 66 patients were diagnosed with FTLD. The subtypes of FTLD were as follows: 62 cases of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), 3 cases of progressive nonfluent aphasia, and 1 case of semantic dementia. Among the FTD cases, 5 cases were FTD with motor neuron disease and 1 case was FTD with parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17. The prevalence of FTD in the total population of Tottori Prefecture was 11.2 per 100,000 inhabitants. Based on these results, the prevalence of FTLD in Japan in 2008 was estimated to be 9.5 per 100,000 individuals. Conclusions: Our epidemiological survey results suggest that there are at least 12,000 FTLD patients in Japan, indicating that FTLD is not a rare disease.

22. Prevalence of Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment in the Rural Island Town of Ama-cho, Japan

Aims: In order to determine the prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), we conducted a population-based study in Japan. Methods: Participants included 924 subjects aged 65 years or older who resided in the town of Ama-cho. In phase 1 of the study, the Mini-Mental State Examination and Clinical Dementia Rating were administered for screening purposes. In phase 2 of the study, the subjects who screened positive were further examined by neurologists. Dementia and MCI were diagnosed by means of DSM-IV and International Working Group on MCI criteria, respectively. Results: By the prevalence date of June 1, 2010, 24 subjects had deceased or lived outside the town. In total, 723 of the remaining 900 subjects received a phase 1 test. In phase 2, 98 subjects were diagnosed with amnestic MCI, 113 subjects with non-amnestic MCI, and 82 subjects with dementia. Of the subjects who did not receive the phase 1 test, 66 subjects were diagnosed as having dementia according to data from their town medical card or the Long-term Care Insurance System. The crude prevalence of amnestic MCI, non-amnestic MCI, and dementia were 10.9, 12.6, and 16.4%, respectively. Conclusion: Consistent with the striking increase in the number of elderly individuals, we report higher prevalence of MCI and dementia in Japan than previously described.

A novel rhodium-catalyzed linear codimerization of alkyl phenyl ketenes with internal alkynes to dienones and a novel synthesis of furans by an unusual cycloaddition of diaryl ketenes with internal alkynes have been developed. These reactions proceed smoothly with the same rhodium catalyst, RhCl(PPh3)3, and are highly dependent on the structure and reactivity of the starting ketenes.

Background and purposeDementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) needs to be distinguished from Alzheimer's disease (AD) because of important differences in patient management and outcome. Severe cardiac sympathetic degeneration occurs in DLB, but not in AD, offering a potential system for a biological diagnostic marker. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy, in the ante-mortem differentiation of probable DLB from probable AD, of cardiac imaging with the ligand 123I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) which binds to the noradrenaline reuptake site, in the first multicenter study.MethodsWe performed a multicenter study in which we used 123I-MIBG scans to assess 133 patients with clinical diagnoses of probable (n = 61) or possible (n = 26) DLB or probable AD (n = 46) established by a consensus panel. Three readers, unaware of the clinical diagnosis, classified the images as either normal or abnormal by visual inspection. The heart-to-mediastinum ratios of 123I-MIBG uptake were also calculated using an automated region-of-interest based system.ResultsUsing the heart-to-mediastinum ratio calculated with the automated system, the sensitivity was 68.9% and the specificity was 89.1% to differentiate probable DLB from probable AD in both early and delayed images. By visual assessment, the sensitivity and specificity were 68.9% and 87.0%, respectively. In a subpopulation of patients with mild dementia (MMSE ≥ 22, n = 47), the sensitivity and specificity were 77.4% and 93.8%, respectively, with the delayed heart-to-mediastinum ratio.ConclusionsOur first multicenter study confirmed the high correlation between abnormal cardiac sympathetic activity evaluated with 123I-MIBG myocardial scintigraphy and a clinical diagnosis of probable DLB. The diagnostic accuracy is sufficiently high for this technique to be clinically useful in distinguishing DLB from AD, especially in patients with mild dementia.

Langevin noise leads to inhibition of the temporal synchronization of the pulse oscillations from a gain-switched multimode semiconductor laser, resulting in the power reduction in optical beat detection. In this paper, the degree of the temporal synchronization of the pulse oscillations was examined by numerically estimating the output energy in THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) using multimode semiconductor laser rate equations that include Langevin noise. The degree was estimated to be 95.5% from the ratio of the averaged THz-TDS output energy for the case where Langevin noise was included to that for when Langevin noise was excluded. Therefore, a gain-switched multimode semiconductor laser can be regarded as equivalent to optical pulses oscillating simultaneously in all modes in actual applications including optical beat detection.

Anodization techniques by alternating current (ac) are introduced in this review. By using ac anodization, laminated alumina films are fabricated. Different types of alumina films consisting of 50–200 nm layers were obtained by varying both the ac power supply and the electrolyte. The total film thickness increased with an increase in the total charge transferred. The thickness of the individual layers increased with the ac voltage; however, the anodization time had little effect on the film thickness. The laminated alumina films resembled the nacre structure of shells, and the different morphologies exhibited by bivalves and spiral shells could be replicated by controlling the rate of increase of the applied potentials.

- Abstract
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) using InGaN/GaN quantum wells (QWs) have low emission efficiencies in the green wavelength region, a problem known as the “green gap”. Surface plasmon (SP)-enhanced LEDs have attracted considerable attention because of their ability to solve the green gap by improving the internal quantum efficiency (IQE). However, there is no suitable metal for enhancing green light emissions using the propagating mode of SP resonance with thin metal films. Additionally, other problems, such as large absorption loss because of metals and difficulty in extracting light from the SP resonance modes, have prevented practical application of SP-enhanced LEDs. Herein, we propose a novel method to improve the IQE of green-light-emitting InGaN by depositing oxide thin films instead of metals and ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. The innovativeness of the proposed method solves the problems of emission enhancements using plasmonics with metals, making it suitable for developing high-efficiency LED devices for practical applications.

Modification of titania supports for iridium catalysts by phosphorus species greatly enhanced the activity for the synthesis of benzimidazoles via hydrogen transfer. Two series of phosphorus-modified titanias were used: The iridium catalysts supported on phosphorus-doped rutile titania prepared by the hydrothermal method showed nearly 5 times higher activity for the reaction of 2-nitroaniline (1a) and benzyl alcohol (2a) to 2-phenylbenzimidazole (3aa) than the catalysts supported on unmodified rutile. XPS depth profile study substantiated that the dopant was present mainly on the surface of the rutile support. Therefore, a facile wet impregnation method was applied to modify the surface of anatase titania with phosphoric acid. The use of thus-modified titania enhanced the activity of the iridium catalysts by more than 2.7 times. The FTIR and XPS studies revealed the presence of bidentate phosphorus species on the surface of titania, and the H2-TPR study indicated that phosphorus-modification promoted the formation of iridium species reduced at higher temperature, which would be suitable for the present catalysis.

With the rapid growth of information technology and geographic information science, many map-based visualization applications for decision-making have been proposed. These applications are used in various contexts. Our study provides empirical evidence of how domain experts utilize map-based data visualization for generating insights into vitality with respect to health-related concepts. We conducted a study to understand domain experts’ knowledge, approach, and experience. Nine domain experts participated in the study, with three experts each from the fields of government, business, and research. The study followed a mixed-methods approach involving an online survey, open-ended tasks, and semi-structured interviews. For this purpose, a map-based data visualization application containing various vitality-related datasets was developed for the open-ended tasks. Our study confirms the importance of maps in this domain but also shows that vitality is strongly geographical. Furthermore, we found that map-based visualizations require multiple data sources and dimensions to enhance the utilization of them in the context of vitality. Therefore, our study suggests the necessity of a combination of multiple datasets as ‘vitality themes’ to efficiently communicate this particular subject to experts. As such, our results provide guidelines for designing map-based data visualizations that support the decision-making process across various domain experts in the field of vitality.

48. Flexible tuning of the peak wavelength and intensity of localized surface plasmon resonance by heat treatment of nanodisk structures fabricated by electron beam lithography

We demonstrate that the plasmonic properties of Au nanodisk structures fabricated by an electron beam lithography can be improved by very simple heat treatments, and that the resonance wavelength can be tuned by temperature. With a Ni adhesion layer, the resonance peak increased and blue-shifted due to improvement of metal quality without changing the sizes of nanostructures, while without the adhesion layer, the resonance wavelength can be tuned over a wider wavelength range by intentionally reducing the size of nanostructures through annealing. For Ag nanodisks with the adhesive layer, the plasmon resonance wavelength was blue-shifted due to the size reduction of nanodisks through thermal annealing. Full-color tuning of plasmonic resonance should be possible by controlling the diameter and height of Ag nanodisks under appropriate temperature conditions of heat treatment.

Surface plasmons resonance is a promising way to improve the luminescence efficiency of light-emitting materials including InGaN/GaN-based quantum wells; however, it has rarely been used for GaN epilayer with metal nanoparticles (NPs). We demonstrated in enhancing the bandgap emission from GaN epilayer by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in a quadrupole oscillation mode using Ag NPs fabricated on the GaN. The shapes of the Ag NPs fabricated on the GaN substrates gradually changed over time and were eventually destroyed completely. This should be the reason why previous studies of enhancement of GaN-based materials by using Ag NPs have not performed as good results as expected. This problem was solved by employing oxide thin films to protect the Ag NPs from destruction or aggregation and obtain enhanced photoluminescence of the GaN epilayer. The localized and enhanced electric fields have been calculated by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method to elucidate the enhancement mechanism. However, it has been still difficult to use this method to reproduce the enhanced emissions caused by the quantum interaction between the surface plasmons and excitons. We reproduced the highly efficient emissions attributed to the Purcell effect by evaluating the nanoantenna effect using the FDTD method. This technique confirmed that an oxide thin film between the GaN substrate and Ag NPs played an effective role in the local enhancement of the electromagnetic field and light extraction from the LSPR mode when several types of oxide thin films were considered.
