4. Diversification of Cynoglossinae genera (Cynoglosseae-Boraginaceae) in the western Irano--Turanian bioregion

Abstract

The Irano--Turanian (I-T) bioregion harbours one of the Old World's greatest repositories of botanical diversity; however, the diversification patterns and the phenotypic evolution of its flora are sorely understudied. The subtribe Cynoglossinae is characteristic of the western I-T bioregion, species-rich in both the desertic lowlands and the more mesic highlands of the Iranian plateau. About 70 species of Cynoglossinae are present in the Iranian plateau, 47 of which are endemic to the plateau. Herein, nuclear internal transcribed spacer sequences as well as cpDNA rpl32-trnL and trnH--psbA sequences were used to investigate the molecular phylogeny, historical biogeography, and ancestral character states of Cynoglossinae. Molecular dating and ancestral range reconstruction analyses indicated that the subtribe Cynoglossinae has initiated its diversification from the eastern part of the western I-T during the mid-Miocene, concomitantly with the uplift of the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains. Moreover, from the Pliocene onwards, the Afghan--India collision and extensive deformation of the Arabia--Eurasia convergence likely promoted allopatric speciation in Cynoglossinae via mostly vicariance events. Evolution of annuals with small nutlets from perennials with large nutlets was accompanied by mesic to desert habitat shifts. Herein, to explain distribution of Cynoglossinae in the western I-T, the congruence between cladogenetic, geological, and palaeoclimatic events was investigated. La biorégion irano--turanienne (I-T) abrite l'un des plus grands réservoirs de diversité botanique de l'Ancien Monde ; cependant, les patrons de diversification et l'évolution phénotypique de sa flore sont très peu étudiés. La sous-tribu des Cynoglossinae est caractéristique de la biorégion occidentale de l'I-T, riche en espèces tant dans les basses terres désertiques que dans les hautes terres plus mésiques du plateau iranien. Environ 70 espèces de Cynoglossinae sont présentes sur le plateau iranien, dont 47 sont endémiques au plateau. Dans ce document, les séquences d'espacement transcrites internes nucléaires et de l'ADNcp rpl32-trnL et trnH--psbA ont été utilisées pour étudier la phylogénie moléculaire, la biogéographie historique et les caractères ancestraux des Cynoglossinae. Les analyses de datation moléculaire et de reconstruction de l'aire de répartition ancestrale indiquaient que la sous-tribu Cynoglossinae a commencé sa diversification à partir de la partie orientale de l'I-T occidental au milieu du Miocène, en même temps que le soulèvement des montagnes Pamir et Hindu Kush. De plus, à partir du Pliocène, la collision entre l'Afghanistan et l'Inde et la déformation importante de la convergence Arabie-Eurasie ont probablement favorisé la spéciation allopatrique chez les Cynoglossinae, principalement par le biais d'événements de vicariance. L'évolution des annuelles à petites nucules à partir des vivaces à grosses nucules s'est accompagnée d'un passage d'habitats mésiques à désertiques. Abstract

This electron microscope study investigated the micromorphological characteristics of the leaf epidermis of 5 species (10 populations) of Ribes (Grossulariaceae) in Iran: R. biebersteinii, R. uva‐crispa, R. orientale, R. aureum, and R. khorasanicum. Samples were collected and identified, and the similarities between the species were evaluated using information from micromorphological traits of leaf epidermis and multivariate analysis (cluster analysis and principal component analysis). The traits useful for discriminating the species were presence or absence of hairs and glandular trichomes, presence or absence of granular with verrucae on hair surface, position of hairs on epidermal surface, hair location on the leaf (lamina, leaf margin, midrib), stomata shape, wax distribution on stomata, prominence and shape of anticlinal walls and outer periclinal layer, and epicuticular wax sculpturing. An identification key based on these leaf micromorphological characters is provided for Ribes species in Iran. The multivariate analysis of micromorphological traits was efficient for inter‐ and intra‐specific delimitation. The present findings correspond to a large extent with existing classifications. 17. Acantholimon brevispicum(Plumbaginaceae) a New Species from Southeastern Iran Based on Morphological and Molecular Data

Abstract

Acantholimon brevispicumBibak, Kaz.Osaloo & Assadi (Plumbaginaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from the Palvar Mountains, Kerman province, SE Iran. In this paper, we discuss morphological characteristics and molecular data that differentiate the species from closely related taxa. According to morphological characters, the new species belongs to the A. sect. Acantholimon(= Staticopsis) and closely related to A. hormozganenseand A. zaeifii, but is easily recognized by its leaves, flowering stem length, inflorescence, bracteole shape, and petal. Morphological comparisons and taxonomic relationships of A. brevispicumwith closely related taxa are discussed. Phylogenetic analysis was performed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods based on nrDNA ITS and plastid rpl32-trnL(UAG)markers. According to molecular and morphological evidence, the new species is distinct from its close relatives. The molecular phylogeny analyses support the placement of A. brevispicumbased on morphology. The information provided includes a species description, plant images, a diagnostic key, a distribution map, and a molecular phylogenetic tree.

Tanacetum isfahanicum Sonboli and Naderifar (Compositae-Anthemideae) is described as a new species from Isfahan and Fars provinces of Iran. It belongs morphologically to Tanacetum sect. Xanthoglossa and differs from its the closest relative, T. polycephalum, by shape of basal and cauline leaves, shape of capitula, length and width of involucre and color of achene ribs. The phylogenetic position of the new species within the genus Tanacetum is established based on nrDNA ITS sequences variation and its close relationship with T. polycephalum is corroborated. Abstract

Cousinia sect. Stenocephalae is a mainly Iranian section of the genus and the second largest section of Cousinia after C. sect. Cynaroidae. Its members are mainly distributed in Iran. Using nrDNA ITS sequences, together with morphological evidence where possible, we tested the monophyly of C. sect. Stenocephalae as well as the related C. sect. Albidae and C. sect. Cousinia. We reconstructed phylogenetic relationships within these sections by performing a Bayesian analysis on a sample of 153 species of Cousinia, of which 49 species belong to the study sections. The analysis revealed that C. sect. Stenocephalae, Albidae and Cousinia are not monophyletic, which lays stress upon the need of a deep reexamination of the sectional classification in Cousinia using a different approach.

Abstract

Hedysarum is the second largest genus of the tribe Hedysareae (Fabaceae), in Iran. Considering the rising number of species in Iran, a taxonomic revision of the genus is provided, except for a Hedysarum wrightianum group. As a complementary treatment, a diagnostic key to the species and detailed morphological descriptions are supplied. Based on the reliable molecular phylogeny and morphological evidence in the current study, the taxonomy of some species of H. subsect. Crinifera was re-examined. H. criniferum var. melanotrichum with 1-2 segmented, large, elliptic-semi ovate pods, is raised to the species rank as H. melanotrichum. Also, a new variety of H. atropatanum, (var. glabrum) with pods without setae, is introduced from the type locality. Furthermore, some species were synonymized including H. longipedunculatum with H. fallacinum, H. persicum with H. papillosum, H. orumiehense with H. criniferum, H. bojnordense with H. kopetdaghi, H. elbursense with H. hyrcanum as well as H. kalatense and H. johartchii with H. balchanense. According to the present study, the flora of Iran consists of H. armenium, a representative of H. sect. Hedysarum, and 31 species from H. sect. Multicaulia.

Abstract

To investigate phylogenetic relationships among and within major lineages of Bromus, with focus on Bromus sect. Bromus, we analyzed DNA sequences from two nuclear ribosomal (ITS, ETS) and two plastid (rpl32-trnLUAG, matK) regions. We sampled 103 ingroup accessions representing 26 taxa of B. section Bromus and 15 species of other Bromus sections. Our analyses confirm the monophyly of Bromus s.l. and identify incongruence between nuclear ribosomal and plastid data partitions for relationships within and among major Bromus lineages. Results support classification of B. pumilio and B. gracillimus within B. sect. Boissiera and B. sect. Nevskiella, respectively. These species are sister groups and are closely related to B. densus (B. sect. Mexibromus) in nrDNA trees and Bromus sect. Ceratochloa in plastid trees. Bromus sect. Bromopsis is paraphyletic. In nrDNA trees, species of Bromus sects. Bromopsis, Ceratochloa, Neobromus, and Genea plus B. rechingeri of B. sect. Bromus form a clade, in which B. tomentellus is sister to a B. sect. Genea-B. rechingeri clade. In the plastid trees, by contrast, B. sect. Bromopsis species except B. tomentosus form a clade, and B. tomentosus is sister to a clade comprising B. sect. Bromus and B. sect. Genea species. Affinities of B. gedrosianus, B. pulchellus, and B. rechingeri (members of the B. pectinatus complex), as well as B. oxyodon and B. sewerzowii, are discordant between nrDNA and plastid trees. We infer these species may have obtained their plastomes via chloroplast capture from species of B. sect. Bromus and B. sect. Genea. Within B. sect. Bromus, B. alopecuros subsp. caroli-henrici, a clade comprising B. hordeaceus and B. interruptus, and B. scoparius are successive sister groups to the rest of the section in the nrDNA phylogeny. Most relationships among the remaining species of B. sect. Bromus are unresolved in the nrDNA and plastid trees. Given these results, we infer that most B. sect. Bromus species likely diversified relatively recently. None of the subdivisional taxa proposed for Bromus sect. Bromus over the last century correspond to natural groups identified in our phylogenetic analyses except for a group including B. hordeaceus and B. interruptus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Here, we describe and illustrate a new alpine species of Astragalus sect. Anthylloidei from Iran. Astragalus wiesneri sp. nov., an interesting and rare species, is only known from the type locality in the Bul Mountain (near Eghlid city) in the southern Zagros Mountains. The new species is compared with close relatives, including A.nigrohirsutus and A. lalesarensis, which are also endemic to Iran. In addition, we assembled a dataset of nrDNA ITS sequences of 21 species (22 accessions) representing A. sect. Anthylloidei and ten species ofother related spiny-cushion forming sections. Maximum likelihoodmethods and Bayesian Inference retrieved A. wiesneri sister toA.nigrohirsutus, a species growing in the same area as the new species.The description of A. wiesneri is presented along with a distributionmap, some ecological information, field images, conservation status,and pertinent notes, Se describe e ilustra una nueva especie alpina de Irán, perteneciente a Astragalus sect. Anthylloidei y 10especies de otras secciones del género que incluyen arbustos almohadillados espinosos. Se realizaron análisis filogenéticos de secuencias de la región ITS del ADN ribosómico nuclear. Los análisis moleculares indican que A.wiesneri es hermana de A. nigrohirsutus, unaespecie con la que vive en simpatría.
