Search

GRAMS (Gamma-Ray and AntiMatter Survey) is a next-generation balloon/satellite experiment utilizing a LArTPC (Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber), to simultaneously target astrophysical observations of cosmic MeV gamma-rays and conduct an indirect dark matter search using antimatter. While LArTPCs are widely used in particle physics experiments, they have never been operated at balloon altitudes. An engineering balloon flight with a small-scale LArTPC (eGRAMS) was conducted on July 27th, 2023, to establish a system for safely operating a LArTPC at balloon altitudes and to obtain cosmic-ray data from the LArTPC. The flight was launched from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Taiki Aerospace Research Field in Hokkaido, Japan. The total flight duration was 3 hours and 12 minutes, including a level flight of 44 minutes at a maximum altitude of 28.9 km. The flight system was landed on the sea and successfully recovered. The LArTPC was successfully operated throughout the flight, and about 0.5 million events of the cosmic-ray data including muons, protons, and Compton scattering gamma-ray candidates, were collected. This pioneering flight demonstrates the feasibility of operating a LArTPC in high-altitude environments, paving the way for future GRAMS missions and advancing our capabilities in MeV gamma-ray astronomy and dark matter research.

Spin fluctuations in the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet NaCrO$_2$ are investigated by means of quasi-elastic neutron scattering with high energy resolution and wide energy band. Two components with the following features are captured separately. They are pronounced at intermediate temperatures of 20-50 K. One with quite an extended lifetime corresponding to $\sim$$0.001E_{\rm ex}$ ($E_{\rm ex}$ the exchange energy) nearly disappears at low temperature 10 K, and the other with an extended lifetime $\sim$$0.01E_{\rm ex}$ survives there, identified as free $Z_2$ vortex and $Z_2$-vortex pair, respectively, in harmony with the $Z_2$ vortex theory., Comment: Contents and discussion are expanded, including new figures in Appendix. Ions with similar charge-to-mass ratios cannot be separated from existing beam profile monitors (BPMs) in nuclear facilities in which low-energy radioactive ions are produced due to nuclear fusion reactions. In this study, we developed a BPM using a microchannel plate and a charge-coupled device to differentiate the beam profiles of alpha-decaying radioactive isotopes from other ions (reaction products) produced in a nuclear reaction. This BPM was employed to optimize the low-energy radioactive francium ion (Fr+) beam developed at the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC), Tohoku University, for electron permanent electric dipole moment (e-EDM) search experiments using Fr atoms. We demonstrated the performance of the BPM by separating the Fr+ beam from other reaction products produced during the nuclear fusion reaction of an oxygen (18O) beam and gold (197Au) target. However, as the mass of Au is close to that of Fr, separating the ions of these elements using a mass filter is a challenge, and a dominant number of Au+ renders the Fr+ beam profile invisible when using a typical BPM. Therefore, by employing the new BPM, we could successfully observe the Fr+ beam and other ion beams distinctly by measuring the alpha decay of Fr isotopes. We have theoretically investigated transport properties of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice in which a binding-unbinding topological transition of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices is predicted to occur at a finite temperature $T_v$. It is shown by means of the hybrid Monte-Carlo and spin-dynamics simulations that the longitudinal spin-current conductivity exhibits a divergence at $T_v$, while the thermal conductivity only shows a monotonic temperature dependence with no clear anomaly at $T_v$. The significant enhancement of the spin-current conductivity is found to be due to the rapid growth of the spin-current-relaxation time toward $T_v$, which can be understood as a manifestation of the topological nature of the free $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex whose lifetime gets longer toward $T_v$. The result suggests that the spin-current measurement is a promising probe to detect the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortex topological transition which has remained elusive in experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Supplemental Material(9 pages, 2 figures)

We investigate neutralization processes (especially thermal surface neutralization), which are required for the magneto-optical trapping of radioactive atoms. A variety of neutralization methods are first summarized: neutral beam injection for fusion reactors, neutral atom implantation in semiconductor processing, and the production of radioactive neutral atoms in accelerators. We focus on thermal surface neutralization, which produces neutral atoms in the thermal energy range for laser cooling. The experiments were carried out with yttrium, gadolinium, and zirconium foils to neutralize francium and rubidium ions for magneto-optical trapping. The results reconfirm that yttrium foil is a good neutralizer (i.e., it has a neutral release efficiency $>65\%$). In addition, the release fraction when using yttrium foil exceeds 75\% at 1350 K, which is greater than the release fraction for the other foils. This reconfirmation is important because few previous studies have focused on thermal surface neutralization. Moreover, the results show that the neutralization efficiency is strongly influenced by the experimental process itself.

The composition dependence of gravitational constant $G$ is measured at the millimeter scale to test the weak equivalence principle, which may be violated at short range through new Yukawa interactions such as the dilaton exchange force. A torsion balance on a turning table with two identical tungsten targets surrounded by two different attractor materials (copper and aluminum) is used to measure gravitational torque by means of digital measurements of a position sensor. Values of the ratios $\tilde{G}_{Al-W}/\tilde{G}_{Cu-W} -1$ and $\tilde{G}_{Cu-W}/G_{N} -1$ were $(0.9 \pm 1.1_{\mathrm{sta}} \pm 4.8_{\mathrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-2}$ and $ (0.2 \pm 0.9_{\mathrm{sta}} \pm 2.1_{\mathrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-2}$ , respectively; these were obtained at a center to center separation of 1.7 cm and surface to surface separation of 4.5 mm between target and attractor, which is consistent with the universality of $G$. A weak equivalence principle (WEP) violation parameter of $\eta_{Al-Cu}(r\sim 1\: \mathrm{cm})=(0.9 \pm 1.1_{\mathrm{sta}} \pm 4.9_{\mathrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-2} $ at the shortest range of around 1 cm was also obtained., Comment: submitted to Class. The Mott polarimetry for T -Violation (MTV) experiment tests time-reversal symmetry in polarized nuclear beta decay by measuring an electron's transverse polarization as a form of angular asymmetry in Mott scattering using a thin metal foil. A Mott scattering analyzer system developed using a tracking detector to measure scattering angles offers better event selectivity than conventional counter experiments. In this paper, we describe a pilot experiment conducted at KEK-TRIAC using a prototype system with a polarized 8Li beam. The experiment confirmed the sound performance of our Mott analyzer system to measure T-violating triple correlation (R correlation), and therefore recommends its use in higher-precision experiments at the TRIUMF-ISAC.

We explain a method to find internal quark configurations of exotic hadron candidates by using the constituent counting rule. The counting rule was theoretically predicted in perturbative QCD for hard exclusive hadron reactions, and it has been tested in experiments for stable hadrons including compound systems of hadrons such as the deuteron, $^3$H, and $^3$He. It indicates that the cross section scales as $d\sigma /dt \sim 1/s^{n-2}$, where $s$ is the center-of-mass energy squared and $n$ is the total number of constituents. We apply this method for finding internal configurations of exotic hadron candidates, especially $\Lambda (1405)$. There is a possibility that $\Lambda (1405)$ could be five-quark state or a $\bar K N$ molecule, and scaling properties should be different between the ordinary three-quark state or five-quark one. We predict such a difference in $\pi^- + p \to K^0 + \Lambda (1405)$, and it could be experimentally tested, for example, at J-PARC. On the other hand, there are already measurements for $\gamma + p \to K^+ + \Lambda (1405)$ as well as the ground $\Lambda$ in photoproduction reactions. Analyzing such data, we found an interesting indication that $\Lambda (1405)$ looks like a five-quark state at medium energies and a three-quark one at high energies. However, accurate higher-energy measurements are necessary for drawing a solid conclusion, and it should be done at JLab by using the updated 12 GeV electron beam. Furthermore, we discuss studies of exotic hadron candidates, such as $f_0 (980)$ and $a_0 (980)$, in electron-positron annihilation by using generalized distribution amplitudes and the counting rule. Fragmentation functions are determined for the pion and kaon by global analyses of charged-hadron production data in electron-positron annihilation. Accurate measurements were reported by the Belle and BaBar collaborations for the fragmentation functions at the center-of-mass energies of 10.52 GeV and 10.54 GeV, respectively, at the KEK and SLAC B factories, whereas other available $e^+e^-$ measurements were mostly done at higher energies, mainly at the $Z$ mass of 91.2 GeV. There is a possibility that gluon fragmentation functions, as well as quark fragmentation functions, are accurately determined by scaling violation. We report our global analysis of the fragmentation functions especially to show impacts of the B-factory measurements on the fragmentation function determination. Our results indicate that the fragmentation functions are determined more accurately not only by the scaling violation but also by high-statistical nature of the Belle and BaBar data. However, there are some tensions between the Belle and BaBar data in comparison with previous measurements. We also explain how the flavor dependence of quark fragmentation functions and the gluon function are separated by using measurements at different $Q^2$ values. We demonstrated a frequency offset locking between two laser sources using a waveguide-type electro-optic modulator (EOM) with 10th-order sidebands for magneto-optical trapping of Fr atoms. The frequency locking error signal was successfully obtained by performing delayed self-homodyne detection of the beat signal between the repumping frequency and the 10th-order sideband component of the trapping light. Sweeping the trapping-light and repumping-light frequencies with keeping its frequency difference of 46 GHz was confirmed over 1 GHz by monitoring the Doppler absorption profile of I2. We propose to use high-energy exclusive reactions for probing internal structure of exotic hadron candidates. First, the constituent counting rule of perturbative QCD can be used for finding internal configurations of an exotic hadron candidate. It is because the number of constituents ($n$), which participate in the exclusive reaction, is found by the scaling behavior of the cross section $d\sigma/dt \propto 1/s^{n-2}$ at large momentum transfer, where $s$ is the center-of-mass energy squared. As an example, we show that the internal structure of $\Lambda \, (1405)$ should be found, for example, by the reaction $\pi^- + p \to K^0 + \Lambda (1405)$. Second, the internal structure of exotic hadron candidates should be investigated by hadron tomography with generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs) in exclusive reactions. Exotic nature should be reflected in the GPDs which contain two factors, longitudinal parton distributions as indicated by the constituent counting rule and transverse form factors as suggested by the hadron size. The GDAs should be investigated by the two-photon process $\gamma^* \gamma \to h\bar h$, for example $h=f_0$ or $a_0$, in electron-positron annihilation. Since the GDAs contain information on a time-like form factor, exotic nature should be found by studying the $h\bar h$ invariant mass dependence of the cross section. We consider hard exclusive production of exotic hadrons to study their internal structure. Revisiting the constituent-counting rule for the large-angle exclusive scattering, we discuss general features expected for the production cross section of exotic hadrons whose leading Fock states are given by multi-quark states other than the ordinary baryon ($qqq$) or meson ($q\bar{q}$) states.We take the production of $\Lambda(1405)$ as an example and propose to study its partonic configuration from the asymptotic scaling of the cross section, which is measurable at J-PARC. We also discuss the production of a pair of the light-hadrons such as $f_0(980)$s and $a_0(980)$s in $\gamma^*\gamma$ collisions in the framework of QCD factorization, in which the cross section is expressed as a convolution of the perturbative coefficients and the generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs). We investigate the possibility of clarifying internal structure of exotic hadrons by high-energy exclusive reactions. In particular, the constituent-counting rule could be used for determining the internal configuration in large-angle exclusive scattering. As an example, we show the cross section pi^- + p -> K^0 + Lambda(1405) in comparison with the one for the ground-state Lambda production pi^- + p -> K^0 + Lambda. The counting rule indicates that the cross section scales as s^8 dsigma /dt=constant if Lambda(1405) is an ordinary three-quark baryon, whereas it is s^{10} dsigma /dt=constant if Lambda(1405) is a five-quark baryon. We investigated the possibility of determining internal structure of exotic hadrons by using high-energy reaction processes, where quarks and gluons are appropriate degrees of freedom. In particular, it should be valuable to investigate the high-energy exclusive processes which include generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs). The GPDs and GDAs contain momentum distributions of partons and form factors. We found that the exotic nature appears in momentum distributions of quarks as suggested by the constituent-counting rule and in the form factors associated with exotic hadron sizes and the number of constituents. Transition GPDs to exotic hadrons could probe such exotic signatures. We also propose that these exotic signatures should be found in exclusive production processes of exotic hadrons from gamma^* gamma in electron-positron annihilation. For example, the GDAs contain information on a time-like form factor of the energy-momentum tensor of a hadron h. We show that the cross section of e gamma -> e+hbar h is sensitive to the exotic signature by looking at the hbar h invariant-mass dependence by taking light hadrons, h=f_0 (980) and a_0 (980). The contribution of quarks with masses m >> Lambda_QCD is the only part of the structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) which is not yet known at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) of perturbative QCD. We present improved partial NNLO results for the most important structure function F_2(x,Q^2) near the partonic threshold, in the high-energy (small-x) limit and at high scales Q^2 >> m^2; and employ these results to construct approximations for the gluon and quark coefficient functions which cover the full kinematic plane. The approximation uncertainties are carefully investigated, and found to be large only at very small values, x smaller about 10^-3, of the Bjorken variable., Comment: 62 pages, LaTeX, 13 figures. We report recent studies on structure functions of the nucleon and nuclei. First, clustering effects are investigated in the structure function F_2 of Be-9 for explaining an unusual nuclear correction found in a JLab experiment. We propose that high densities created by formation of clustering structure like 2*alpha+neutron in Be-9 is the origin of the unexpected JLab result by using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD). There is an approved proposal at JLab to investigate the structure functions of light nuclei including the cluster structure, so that much details will become clear in a few years. Second, tensor-polarized quark and antiquark distributions are obtained by analyzing HERMES measurements on the structure function b_1 for the deuteron. The result suggests a finite tensor polarization for antiquark distributions, which is an interesting topic for further theoretical and experimental investigations. An experimental proposal exists at JLab for measuring b_1 of the deuteron as a new tensor-structure study in 2010's. Furthermore, the antiquark tensor polarization could be measured by polarized deuteron Drell-Yan processes at hadron facilities such as J-PARC and GSI-FAIR. Third, the recent CDF dijet anomaly is investigated within the standard model by considering possible modifications of the strange-quark distribution. We find that the shape of a dijet-mass spectrum changes depending on the strange-quark distribution. Dijet anomaly reported by the CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab) collaboration in 1.96 TeV p-pbar collisions is investigated within the standard model by considering effects of parton distribution functions on various processes: W+dijet, Z+dijet, WW, ZW, and top production. Since the anomalous peak exists in the dijet-mass region of 140 GeV with the p-pbar center-of-mass energy sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, a relevant momentum fraction x of partons is roughly 0.1. In this x region, recent HERMES semi-inclusive charged-lepton scattering experiment indicated that the strange-quark distribution could be very different from a conventional one, which has been used for many years, based on opposite-sign dimuon measurements in neutrino-induced deep inelastic scattering. We investigated effects of such variations in the strange-quark distribution s(x) on the anomaly. We found that distributions of W+dijets and other process are affected by the strange-quark modifications in wide dijet-mass regions including the 140 GeV one. Since the CDF anomaly was observed in the shoulder region of the dijet-mass distribution, a slight modification of the distribution shape could explain at least partially the CDF excess. Therefore, it is important to consider such effects within the standard model for judging whether the CDF anomaly indicates new physics beyond the standard model. A large-scale study of the molecular clouds toward the Trifid nebula, M20, has been made in the J=2-1 and J=1-0 transitions of 12CO and 13CO. M20 is ionized predominantly by an O7.5 star HD164492. The study has revealed that there are two molecular components at separate velocities peaked toward the center of M20 and that their temperatures - 30-50 K as derived by an LVG analysis - are significantly higher than the 10 K of their surroundings. We identify that the two clouds as the parent clouds of the first generation stars in M20. The mass of each cloud is estimated to be ~10^3 Msun and their separation velocity is ~8 km/s over ~1-2 pc. We find the total mass of stars and molecular gas in M20 is less than ~3.2 \times 103 Msun, which is too small by an order of magnitude to gravitationally bind the system. We argue that the formation of the first generation stars, including the main ionizing O7.5 s tar, was triggered by the collision between the two clouds in a short time scale of ~1 Myrs, a second example alongside Westerlund 2, where a super star cluster may have been formed due to cloud-cloud collision triggering., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted to ApJ

We have extended previous results on the threshold expansion of the gluon coefficient function for the charm contribution to the deep-inelastic structure function F_2 by deriving all threshold-enhanced contributions at the next-to-next-to-leading order. We study the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor J_1 and next-nearest-neighbor J_2 exchange couplings in magnetic field h. With varying dimensionless parameters J_2/J_1 and h/J_1, the ground state of the model exhibits several phases including three gapped phases (dimer, 1/3-magnetization plateau, and fully polarized phases) and four types of gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phases which we dub TLL1, TLL2, spin-density-wave (SDW_2), and vector chiral phases. From extensive numerical calculations using the density-matrix renormalization-group method, we investigate various (multiple-)spin correlation functions in detail, and determine dominant and subleading correlations in each phase. For the one-component TLLs, i.e., the TLL1, SDW_2, and vector chiral phases, we fit the numerically obtained correlation functions to those calculated from effective low-energy theories of TLLs, and find good agreement between them. The low-energy theory for each critical TLL phase is thus identified, together with TLL parameters which control the exponents of power-law decaying correlation functions. For the TLL2 phase, we develop an effective low-energy theory of two-component TLL consisting of two free bosons (central charge c=1+1), which explains numerical results of entanglement entropy and Friedel oscillations of local magnetization. Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al (I =5/2+, T_1/2 = 644(25) ms) has been measured by means of the beta-NMR spectroscopy using a spin-polarized 31Al beam produced in the projectile fragmentation reaction. The obtained Q moment, |Q_exp(31Al)| = 112(32)emb, are in agreement with conventional shell model calculations within the sd valence space. Previous result on the magnetic moment also supports the validity of the sd model in this isotope, and thus it is concluded that 31Al is located outside of the island of inversion., Comment: 5 pages

Equilibrium properties of the three-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg spin glass are studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations, with particular attention to the nature of its phase transition. A finite-size-scaling analysis is performed both for the spin-glass (SG) and the chiral-glass (CG) orders. Our results suggest that the model exhibits the CG long-range order at finite temperatures without accompanying the conventional SG long-range order, in contrast to some of the recent works claiming the simultaneous SG and CG transition. Typical length and time scales which represent a crossover from the spin-chirality coupling regime at short scales to the spin-chirality decoupling regime at long scales are introduced and examined in order to observe the true asymptotic transition behavior. We discuss W gamma production in polarized p p collisions at RHIC energy. We point out that the RHIC collider has two advantages over other hadron colliders to measure the characteristic feature of W gamma production: (1) the RHIC energy is not so high and (2) the polarized beams are available. We calculate the tree level cross section for W gamma production using a generic spin basis for W and discuss both the angular dependence and spin correlation., Comment: 14 pages, 15 Postscript figures

The ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated spin-S XXZ chain with the competing nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings is studied numerically by using the density-matrix renormalization-group method for the cases of S = 1/2, 3/2, and 2. We are paricularly interested in the possible gapless and gapped chiral phases, in which the chirality \kappa_l = S_l^x S_{l+1}^y - S_l^y S_{l+1}^x exhibits a finite long-range order whereas the spin correlation decays either algebraically or exponentially. We show that the gapless chiral phase appears in a broad region of the phase diagram for general S. By contrast, the gapped chiral phase is found for integer S in a narrow region of the phase diagram, while it has not been identified for half-odd integer S within our numerical accuracy. By combining the results with our previous result for S = 1, we discuss the S-dependence of the phase diagram. We investigate the Sudakov double logarithmic corrections to the form factor of fermion in the SU(2)XU(1) electroweak theory. We adopt the familiar Feynman gauge and present explicit calculations at the two loop level. We show that the leading logarithmic corrections coming from the infrared singularities are consistent with the "postulated" exponentiated electroweak Sudakov form factor. The similarities and differences in the "soft" physics between the electroweak theory and the unbroken non-abelian gauge theory (QCD) will be clarified., Comment: 8 pages, 14 figures

The ordering of the frustrated S=1/2 XY spin chain with the competing nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings, J_1 and J_2, is studied by using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. It is found that besides the well-known spin-fluid and dimer phases the chain exhibits gapless `chiral' phase characterized by the spontaneous breaking of parity, in which the long-range order parameter is a chirality, \kappa _l=S_l^xS_{l+1}^y-S_l^yS_{l+1}^x, whereas the spin correlation decays algebraically. Finite-size effects in the mean-field Ising spin glass and the mean-field three-state Potts glass are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. In the thermodynamic limit, each model is known to exhibit a continuous phase transition into the ordered state with a full and a one-step replica-symmetry breaking (RSB), respectively. In the Ising case, Binder parameter g calculated for various finite sizes remains positive at any temperature and crosses at the transition point, while in the Potts case g develops a negative dip without showing a crossing in the g>0 region. By contrast, non-self averaging parameters always remain positive and show a clear crossing at the transition temperature in both cases. Our finding suggests that care should be taken in interpreting the numerical data of the Binder parameter, particularly when the system exhibits a one-step-like RSB., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Extensive equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations are performed for a three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass with the nearest-neighbor Gaussian coupling to investigate its spin-glass and chiral-glass orderings. The occurrence of a finite-temperature chiral-glass transition without the conventional spin-glass order is established. Critical exponents characterizing the transition are different from those of the standard Ising spin glass.
