2. School Choice Is Not Enough: The Impact of Critical Social Justice Ideology in American Education

Abstract

This report focuses on the teaching of Critical Race Theory and radical gender theory in American classrooms. Taken together, those concepts comprise radical cultural left ideologies known as Critical Social Justice (CSJ). The findings of this report suggest that the teaching of applied versions of Critical Race Theory and radical gender theory is endemic in American schools. Ninety-three percent of a random sample of 18-to-20-year-old Americans say that they have been taught, or have heard about from an adult at school, one or more Critical Social Justice (CSJ) concepts. In fact, the average respondent reported being taught and/or hearing about more than half of the eight concepts this study measured. Even assuming these are overestimates, schools and teachers promoting CSJ narratives can hardly be regarded as rare or isolated occurrences. Rather, it is the experience of a large segment of American high school students, if not the majority.

Abstract

Human dynamics and sociophysics suggest statistical models that may explain and provide us with better insight into social phenomena. Contextual and selection effects tend to produce extreme values in the tails of rank-ordered distributions of both census data and district-level election outcomes. Models that account for this nonlinearity generally outperform linear models. Fitting nonlinear functions based on rank-ordering census and election data therefore improves the fit of aggregate voting models. This may help improve ecological inference, as well as election forecasting in majoritarian systems. We propose a generative multiplicative decrease model that gives rise to a rank-order distribution, and facilitates the analysis of the recent UK EU referendum results. We supply empirical evidence that the beta-like survival function, which can be generated directly from our model, is a close fit to the referendum results, and also may have predictive value when covariate data are available., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1609.04282

Abstract

As the white share of America continues to decline, white identity is\ud becoming more important for politics. I show that white identity is considerably\ud stronger among whites who are attached to their ancestry, i.e. Irish, ‘American’\ud or Italian. Accordingly, we should see it as more reflective of cultural attachment\ud than a desire for politico-economic advantage. In addition, a separate dynamic\ud I term ethno-traditional American nationalism, is important. This is not white\ud nationalism, but a form of American national identity in which ethnocultural\ud elements form an important part but do not, like the American accent, form a\ud condition of equal national membership. Ethno-traditional nationalism is about\ud the ‘what is American’ question of symbolic attachment, rather than the ‘who is\ud American’ question of which groups belong and are excluded, that has received\ud the lion’s share of academic attention.

Yet intra-party dynamics are often crucial. This article uses the example of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) to illustrate this. Events in the 1998-2003 period highlight the importance of splits within the party's governing Ulster Unionist Council (UUC) over the Good Friday Agreement (GFA) which underpins the Northern Ireland peace process. This article pioneers the use of postcode-profiling technology and uses multi-level analysis of a UUC party list to show that delegates' party section provides the best predictor of their stance towards the Good Friday Agreement. Consequently, the article argues that delegate voting behaviour within the UUC is best explained by reference to highly embedded, meso-level institutions which perpetuate networks and condition individual preferences.
