Abstract

We present measurements of the polarization of the $ J/\psi $ produced in 800-GeV proton interactions with a copper target. Polarization of the $ J/\psi $ is sensitive to the $ c \bar{c} $ production and hadronization processes. A longitudinal polarization is observed at large $ x_{F} $, while at small $ x_{F} $ the state is produced essentially unpolarized or slightly transversely polarized. No significant variation of the polarization is observed versus $ p_{T} $., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The Fermilab E866/NuSea Collaboration has measured the Drell-Yan dimuon cross sections in 800 GeV/$c$ $pp$ and $pd$ collisions. This represents the first measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pp$ collisions over a broad kinematic region and the most extensive study to date of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pd$ collisions. The results indicate that recent global parton distribution fits provide a good description of the light antiquark sea in the nucleon over the Bjorken-$x$ range $0.03 \lesssim x < 0.15$, but overestimate the valence quark distributions as $x \to 1$., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract

We present a measurement of the polarization observed for bottomonium states produced in p-Cu collisions at sqrt(s)=38.8 GeV. The angular distribution of the decay dimuons of the Upsilon(1S) state show no polarization at small xF and pT but significant positive transverse production polarization for either pT > 1.8 GeV/c or for xF > 0.35. The Upsilon(2S+3S) unresolved states show a large transverse production polarization at all values of xF and pT measured. These observations are compared with an NRQCD calculation that predicts a transverse polarization in bottomonium production arising from quark-antiquark fusion and gluon-gluon fusion diagrams., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Measurements of the suppression of the yield per nucleon of J/Psi and Psi' production for 800 GeV/c protons incident on heavy relative to light nuclear targets have been made with very broad coverage in xF and pT. The observed suppression is smallest at xF values of 0.25 and below and increases at larger values of xF. It is also strongest at small pT. Substantial differences between the Psi' and J/Psi are observed for the first time in p-A collisions. The suppression for the Psi' is stronger than that for the J/Psi for xF near zero, but becomes comparable to that for the J/Psi for xF > 0.6., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication by PRL

Abstract

A precise measurement of the ratios of the Drell-Yan cross section per nucleon for an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on Be, Fe and W targets is reported. The behavior of the Drell-Yan ratios at small target parton momentum fraction is well described by an existing fit to the shadowing observed in deep-inelastic scattering. The cross section ratios as a function of the incident parton momentum fraction set tight limits on the energy loss of quarks passing through a cold nucleus.

Abstract

The Drell-Yan cross section ratios, $\sigma(p+d)/\sigma(p+p)$, measured in Fermilab E866, have led to the first determination of $\bar d(x) / \bar u(x)$, $\bar d(x) - \bar u(x)$, and the integral of $\bar d(x) - \bar u(x)$ for the proton over the range $0.02 \le x \le 0.345$. The E866 results are compared with predictions based on parton distribution functions and various theoretical models. The relationship between the E866 results and the NMC measurement of the Gottfried integral is discussed. The agreement between the E866 results and models employing virtual mesons indicates these non-perturbative processes play an important role in the origin of the $\bar d$, $\bar u$ asymmetry in the nucleon sea., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, ReVTeX

Abstract

A precise measurement of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on hydrogen and deuterium targets is reported. Over 140,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs with dimuon mass M_{mu+ mu-} >= 4.5 GeV/c^2 were recorded. From these data, the ratio of anti-down (dbar) to anti-up (ubar) quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in Bjorken-x. A strong x dependence is observed in the ratio dbar/ubar, showing substantial enhancement of dbar with respect to ubar for x<0.2. This result is in fair agreement with recent parton distribution parameterizations of the sea. For x>0.2, the observed dbar/ubar ratio is much nearer unity than given by the parameterizations., Comment: REVTeX, to be published in Phys. Rev. Lett

18. Workplace violence against doctors in Bangladesh : a content analysis

Workplace violence in healthcare settings is a common global problem, including in Bangladesh. Despite the known presence of workplace violence in healthcare environments of developing countries, there is limited understanding of factors that lead to hospital violence in Bangladesh. This study aims to explore factors that influence incidents of violence against healthcare professionals in Bangladesh, as reported by doctors via social media forum. Content analysis was conducted on 157 reported incidents documented on “Platform,” the online social media most used by medical students and doctors in Bangladesh. Posts by doctors detailing experiences of physical or verbal violence at their workplace between July 2012 and December 2017 were included in this study. The majority of reported incidents were reported by male doctors (86%) and from government hospitals (63.7%). Findings showed that primary healthcare centers experienced more violence than secondary and tertiary facilities. This may largely be due to insufficient human and other resources in primary care settings to meet patient demand and expectations. Most of the events happened at night (61%), and as a result, entry-level doctors such as emergency duty doctors and intern doctors were commonly affected. Six themes were identified as vital factors in workplace violence against doctors: patients’ perspectives, delayed treatment, power practice, death declarations, extreme violence, and care-seeking behaviors. Most incidents fell under the categories of delayed treatment and power practice at 26.8 and 26.1%, respectively. This study identified possible factors for reported violence in hospital settings. To address and reduce these incidents, hospital administrators should be aware of risk factors for violent behavior and design appropriate measures to prevent workplace violence. Further qualitative and quantitative research is needed to appropriately address the consequences of violence on healthcare workers and implement measures to mitigate these events.

Abstract

The mechanisms whereby maternal nutritional manipulation through pregnancy result in altered blood pressure in the offspring may include changes in fetal and newborn and adult renal prostaglandin (PG) synthesis, metabolism, and receptor expression. Since the postnatal effects of nutrient restriction on the renal PG synthesis and receptor system during nephrogenesis in conjunction with nephron numbers and blood pressure have not been evaluated in the rat, the present study examined the effect of reducing maternal food intake by 50% of ad libitum through pregnancy on young male rats. Six control-fed mothers and eight nutrient-restricted pregnant rats with single litter mates were used at each sampling time point, most of which occurred during nephrogenesis. Offspring of nutrient-restricted dams were lighter from birth to 3 days. This was accompanied by reduced [PGE.sub.2], with smaller kidneys up to 14 days. Nutrient restriction also decreased mRNA expression of the PG synthesis enzyme, had little effect on the PG receptors, and increased mRNA expression of the degradation enzyme during nephrogenesis and the glucocorticoid receptor in the adult kidney. These mRNA changes were normally accompanied by similar changes in protein. Nephron number was also reduced from 7 days up to adulthood when blood pressure (measured by telemetry) did not increase as much as in control offspring during the dark, active period. In conclusion, maternal nutrient restriction suppressed renal PG concentrations in the offspring, and this was associated with suppressed kidney growth and development and decreased blood pressure. kidney; nutrient restriction; offspring; prostaglandins

Abstract

In 1975 the Consortium for Continental Reflection Profiling (COCORP) acquired 37 km of 12-fold commonmidpoint (CMP) stacked seismic reflection profiles in Hardeman County, Texas (Oliver et al. 1976). The entire crustal section was the object of study, so a record length of 15 set (two-way traveltime) was recorded. Three separate profiles were arranged in an H-shaped pattern to provide two-dimensional (2-D) surface coverage.

Abstract

A polypeptide ligand for osteoprotegerin, a member of the tumor necrosis factor family of cytokines found in transmembrane and soluble forms, was characterized. The ligand binds to the surface of osteoclast progenitors in bone marrow treated with CSF-1. Recombinant soluble osteoprotegerin ligand strongly induces bone resorption in vivo and, along with osteoprotegerin, acts as positive and negative regulators of osteoclast development.
