Determination of lateral earth pressure plays a vital role in retaining wall design. Failure surfaces are very effective in active lateral earth pressure acting on cantilever retaining walls. Calculations of lateral earth thrusts vary for two different cases, namely short heel or long heel, based on the intersection of T type cantilever wall and failure surface. In this study, the effect of heel length on an active failure mechanism was examined with numerical simulation based on FEM. The results of the numerical analyses were compared with the results of small-scale model tests and an analytical method. In comparison, the inclination angle of active failure surfaces was taken into account. An earth thrust maximization code suggested in the literature was used to determine failure surface inclination angles analytically. In order to determine failure inclination experimentally, results of small scale tests were used. In the tests, failure surfaces were determined using particle image velocimetry technique (PIV). Numerical analysis was performed using commercially available finite element program Plaxis 2D. The same material properties are used in all numerical models. As a result of the study short heel-long heel cases and effective parameters on the inclination angles of the failure surfaces are explained elaborately.

Dayanma yapılarının tasarımında yatay toprak basıncıdağılımı önem arz etmektedir. Birçok çalışmada, dayanma yapısına etkiyen aktiftoprak basınç dağılımı nonlineer olarak kabul edilir. Toprak basınç dağılışıile ilgili çok sayıda çalışma olmasına karşın, Duvar boyutlarının yatay toprakbasıncı dağılışı üzerine etkilerini irdeleyen az sayıda çalışma bulunmaktadır.Bu çalışmada, duvar şeklinin aktif yanal toprak basınç dağılımı ve aktifkırılma yüzeyleri üzerine etkisi incelenmiştir. Bu nedenle çeşitli tip dayanmaduvarlarına gelen yanal toprak basınç dağılışları ve oluşturdukları kırılmayüzeyleri numerik olarak irdelenmiştir. Yapılan çalışma kapsamında, çeşitlieğimlerdeki ağırlık tipi dayanma duvarları, farklı topuk uzunlukları ve eğimesahip ters T biçimli dayanma duvarları göz önüne alınmıştır. Yapılan çalışmasonucunda yanal toprak basınç dağılışının duvar tipine göre değiştiğibelirlenmiştir. Buna ek olarak duvar eğimi ve topuk uzunluğunun kırılmayüzeyleri ve yanal toprak basınç dağılışı üzerinde etkili olduğu görülmüştür., Lateral earth pressure distributionis crucial in retaining structure design. Despite there are many studies about earth pressure distribution,there are limited number of studies considering effect of wall geometry onlateral earth pressure distribution. In this study, it is aimed to examineeffect of wall geometry on active failure surfaces and lateral earth pressuredistribution. Thus, active failure surface and active lateral earth pressure distributionof various types of retaining wall were examined numerically. Within scope ofthe analysis a gravity retaining wall with various inclinations, inverted Ttype cantilever retaining wall and gravity wall with various heel lengths wereconsidered. The effect of wall inclination and heel length on failure mechanismand lateral earth pressure distribution was studied. As a result of the studyit is shown that lateral earth pressure distribution varies based on wall type.Additionally, short heel and long heel cases are effective on earth pressuredistribution.

Yapılan bu yüksek lisans tez çalışmasında, Trabzon İlinin çeşitli yerlerinden alınan beşfarklızemin örneği üzerinde, yıkamalıanaliz, tane yoğunluk, ıslak analiz, likit ve plastiklimit deneyleri, standart kompaksiyon deneyleri ve standart kompaksiyon enerjisinde artansu içeriği değerleriyle sıkıştırılmışzemin örnekleri üzerinde, düşen düzeyli geçirimlilikdeneyleri yapılmıştır. Yapılan zemin sınıflandırma deneyleri sonucunda zemin örnekleri,(USCS)'ye göre sınıflandırılmıştır. Yapılan standart kompaksiyon deneylerinde, zeminörneklerinin kuru yoğunluklarının, artan su içeriği ile birlikte önce artışgösterdiği, belirlibir su içeriği değerinde maksimum değer aldıklarıve daha sonra artan su içerikleriyle kuruyoğunluk değerlerinde azalma olduğu gözlenmiştir. Düşen düzeyli geçirimlilik deneylerisonucunda su içeriklerindeki artışa bağlıolarak, optimum su içeriğinden önce geçirimlilikkatsayılarında artışgözlenmişolup, optimum su içeriğinde geçirimlilik katsayılarınınminimum değer aldıklarıve optimum su içeriğinden sonra su içeriklerinin artmasıylageçirimlilik değerlerinde de artışolduğu gözlenmiştir. Kompaksiyon ve düşen seviyeli geçirimlilikdeneylerinden elde edilen (e) ve (k) değerlerinden oluşturulan e ? log(k) grafiklerinindoğrusal olduklarıbelirlenmiş In this master of science thesis study, sieve analysis, specific gravity, wet analysis, liquidand plastic limit tests, soil classification tests, standard compaction tests and falling headpermeability tests are performed over five different soil samples taken from various placesin Trabzon are examined. At the end of the soil classification tests, the soil samples areclassified according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). After standardcompaction tests, it was found that dry density of soil increased with increasing watercontent. Until peak point where dry density is maximum and water content is optimum, drydensity has maximum value and peak point, the dry density decreases with increasingwater content. Moreover, in parallel with amount of increase of fine grained soils, it wasfound that optimum water content value decreases, and, maximum dry densities increase.As a result of falling head permeability tests, it was found that coefficient of permeabilitiesdecrease with increasing water contents before in the 1st region. In the 2nd region,coefficient of permeabilities became minimum, with the increasing water contents,increase in the coefficient of permeabilities were observed in 3 rd region. Water content ¡Vdry density (w-?âk) and water content ¡V coefficient of permeability graphs are unified. Itwas seen that the water content of maximum dry density and minimum permeability isnearly the same.
