When a romantic relationship ends, individuals often look back and wish they had done things differently. What may seem clear in hindsight, however, is often unclear in foresight. We investigated the effects of outcome knowledge on individuals’ judgments of a dating couple. In Study 1 (181 U.S. college students, 334 U.S. community adults), participants read about a couple with an uncertain relationship trajectory; then, experimental group participants received knowledge about the couple’s status six months down the road as broken up or still together, while control group participants received no outcome knowledge. Individuals who were told the dating couple broke up perceived that outcome as more likely and obvious compared to those who were not given outcome knowledge or who were told the couple stayed together. In Study 2 (262 U.S. college students, 333 U.S. community adults), participants in the experimental conditions received knowledge about the couple’s status six months later as broken up or engaged, while control group participants received no outcome knowledge. In both samples, outcome knowledge of a breakup had a negative effect on individuals’ judgments about the couple. Among community adults, but not among college students, outcome knowledge of an engagement positively affected judgments of the couple. We offer directions for future research and discuss the mechanisms by which hindsight bias might affect evaluations of our own and others’ relationships.

Background: This study aimed to determine whether the iliac crests are truly at the level of L4 to L5, accounting for patient demographic and anthropometric characteristics. Methods: We measured the umbilicus and iliac crests relative to the lumbar spine using computed tomography of patients without spinal pathology, accounting for the influences of patient height, weight, body mass index (BMI), sex, race, and ethnicity. Results: A total of 834 patients (391 men and 443 women) were reviewed. The location of the umbilicus relative to the lumbar spine demonstrated a unimodal distribution pattern clustered at L4, while the iliac crests were most frequently located from L4 to L5. Iliac crests were located above the L4 to L5 disc space 26.5% of the time. Iliac crests were located at the L4 to L5 disc space 29.8% of the time. No correlations were observed between the umbilicus and iliac crests with patient height, weight, or BMI. There was no difference in the location of the umbilicus with respect to patient sex, race, and ethnicity. The locations of the iliac crests were cephalad in women compared with men and in Hispanics compared with African American, Caucasian, and Asian patients. Conclusions: The iliac crests were located above the level of the L4 to L5 disc space approximately 26% of the time. The umbilicus is most frequently at the level of the L4 vertebral body. Patient height, weight, and BMI do not influence the location of the umbilicus or the iliac crests relative to the lumbar spine. Patient sex and ethnicity influence the location of the iliac crests but not the umbilicus relative to the lumbar spine. Clinical Relevance: Modern neurosurgical techniques require clearance of the iliac crests during anterior and anterolateral approaches. Background: This study utilized computed tomography (CT) to establish normative radiographic morphometric measurements of cervical disc space height (DSH) and interpedicular distance (IPD) and document the influence of patient sex, race, ethnicity, and anthropometric characteristics. Methods: Cervical CTs of 1000 patients between 18 and 35 years of age without known spinal pathology were reviewed. Statistical analyses included the assessment of associations between patient height, weight, sex, race, and ethnicity regarding DSH and IPD. Results: Irrespective of disc level, average DSH measurements were as follows: anterior height of 2.6 ± 1.0 mm, middle height of 4.1 ± 1.2 mm, and posterior height of 1.8 ± 1.0 mm. IPD was only measured between C3 and C7 vertebrae, and irrespective of disc level, the mean IPD measurement was 21.1 ± 1.5 mm. Significant differences for anterior, middle, posterior DSH, and IPD were observed in all disc levels. Significant differences in DSH and IPD were observed for all anthropometric factors of sex, race, and ethnicity relative to vertebral level. Males had significantly larger DSH and IPD measurements across all vertebral levels compared to females. Caucasians had larger DSH and IPD at select vertebral levels compared to African Americans and Hispanics. Conclusion: This study describes measurements of DSH and IPD between C2 and T1 levels in 1000 healthy 18-35-year-old subjects without known pathology.
