Search

Plasmonic, as a rapidly growing research field, provides new pathways to guide and modulate highly confined light in the microwave to the optical range of frequencies. We demonstrate a plasmonic slot waveguide, at the nanometer scale, based on high transition temperature superconductor BSCCO, to facilitates the manifestation of the chip-scale millimeter waves to terahertz integrated circuitry operating at cryogenic temperatures. We investigate the effect of geometrical parameters on the modal characteristics of the BSCCO plasmonic slot waveguide between 100 GHz and 500 GHz. In addition, we investigate the thermal sensing of the modal characteristics of the nanoscale superconducting slot waveguide and show that at a lower frequency, the fundamental mode of the waveguide has a larger propagation length, a lower effective refractive index, and a strongly localized modal energy. Moreover, we find that our device offers a larger SPP propagation length and higher field confinement than the gold plasmonic waveguides at broad temperature ranges below BSCCO Tc. The proposed device can open up a new route towards realizing cryogenic low-loss photonic integrated circuitry at the nanoscale.

New results from MAST are presented that focus on validating models in order to extrapolate to future devices. Measurements during start-up experiments have shown how the bulk ion temperature rise scales with the square of the reconnecting field. During the current ramp up models are not able to correctly predict the current diffusion. Experiments have been performed looking at edge and core turbulence. At the edge detailed studies have revealed how filament characteristic are responsible for determining the near and far SOL density profiles. In the core the intrinsic rotation and electron scale turbulence have been measured. The role that the fast ion gradient has on redistributing fast ions through fishbone modes has led to a redesign of the neutral beam injector on MAST Upgrade. In H-mode the turbulence at the pedestal top has been shown to be consistent with being due to electron temperature gradient modes. A reconnection process appears to occur during ELMs and the number of filaments released determines the power profile at the divertor. Resonant magnetic perturbations can mitigate ELMs provided the edge peeling response is maximised and the core kink response minimised. Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta }$ emit intense and coherent terahertz waves determined by the internal electromagnetic cavity resonance. We identify the excited transverse magnetic mode by observing the broadly tunable emissions from an identical nearly square stack and simulating the scattering spectrum. We employ a wedge-type interferometer to measure emitted integral power independently of the far-field pattern. The simulation results are in good agreement with observed resonance behaviors as a function of frequency., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Local electron and ion heating characteristics during merging reconnection startup on the MAST spherical tokamak have been revealed for the first time using a 130 channel YAG-TS system and a new 32 chord ion Doppler tomography diagnostic. 2D local profile measurement of $T_e$, $n_e$ and $T_i$ detect highly localized electron heating at the X point and bulk ion heating downstream. For the push merging experiment under high guide field condition, thick layer of closed flux surface formed by reconnected field sustains the heating profile for more than electron and ion energy relaxation time $\tau^E_{ei}\sim4-10$ms, both heating profiles finally form triple peak structure at the X point and downstream. Toroidal guide field mostly contributes the formation of peaked electron heating profile at the X point. We report the results from resistivity and magnetic measurements on polycrystalline Ce oxypnictide (CeFeAsO1-xFx) samples where x spans from 0.13 to 0.25. We find that the orbital limiting field is as high as 150 T and it systematically decreases with increasing doping. The Maki parameter is greater than one across the phase diagram and the large Maki parameter suggests that orbital and Pauli limiting effects contribute to the upper critical field. The broadening of the superconducting transition in the resistivity data was interpreted using the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) model where we find that the TAFF activation energy, U0(B), is proportional to B^{-(gamma)} from 1 T to high fields, and (gamma) does not significantly change with doping. However, U0 and the superconducting critical current, Jc, are peaked in the mid-doping region (x = 0.15 to x = 0.20), and not in the low (x < 0.15) or high doping (x > 0.20) regions. In superconductor-topological insulator-superconductor hybrid junctions, the barrier edge states are expected to be protected against backscattering, to generate unconventional proximity effects, and, possibly, to signal the presence of Majorana fermions. The standards of proximity modes for these types of structures have to be settled for a neat identification of possible new entities. Through a systematic and complete set of measurements of the Josephson properties we find evidence of ballistic transport in coplanar Al-Bi2Se3-Al junctions that we attribute to a coherent transport through the topological edge state. The shunting effect of the bulk only influences the normal transport. This behavior, which can be considered to some extent universal, is fairly independent of the specific features of superconducting electrodes. A comparative study of Shubnikov - de Haas oscillations and Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy gave an experimental signature compatible with a two dimensional electron transport channel with a Dirac dispersion relation. A reduction of the size of the Bi2Se3 flakes to the nanoscale is an unavoidable step to drive Josephson junctions in the proper regime to detect possible distinctive features of Majorana fermions., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures

We present the first report on a large low-temperature magnetoresistance (MR) of more than 1600% in a SrFe2As2 single crystal and 1300% in a low-energy Ca ion-implanted SrFe2As2 single crystal that occurs before the emergence of crystallographic strain-induced bulk superconductivity arising from a sample aging effect. In accordance to band structure calculations from literature, which consitently show more than 2 bands are involved in the transport, we have modeled this large MR at high fields using a 3-carrier scenario rather than solely on quantum linear MR model generally used to explain the MR in iron-pnictides. At and below 20 K the large MR may be due to 3-carrier transport in an inhomogeneous state where there are superconducting and metallic regions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) in high-temperature superconductors enable the fabrication of compact sources of coherent terahertz radiation. Here we demonstrate that multiple stacks patterned on the same Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta crystal can - under optimized conditions - be synchronized to emit high-power THz-radiation. For three synchronized stacks we achieved 610 microwatts of continuous-wave coherent radiation power at 0.51 THz. We suggest that synchronization is promoted by THz-waves in the base crystal. We note though that synchronization cannot be achieved in all samples. However, even in these cases powers on the 100-microwatt scale can be generated., Comment: 17 pages, 4 Figures. Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) made from high-temperature superconductors such as Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+\delta} (Bi-2212) are a promising source of coherent continuous-wave terahertz radiation. It is thought that at electrical bias conditions under which THz-emission occurs hot spots may form due to resistive self-heating, and that these spots may be highly beneficial for the generation of high levels of THz power. Here we perform an imaging study of the temperature distribution at the surface of BSCCO stacks utilizing the temperature-dependent 612nm fluorescence line of Eu^{3+} in a europium chelate. The images directly reveal a highly non-uniform temperature distribution in which the temperature in the middle of the stack can exceed the superconducting transition temperature by tens of Kelvin under biasing conditions typical for THz-emission., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

In order to understand the origin of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxides, we must understand the normal state from which it emerges. Here, we examine the evolution of the normal state electronic excitations with temperature and carrier concentration in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 using angle-resolved photoemission. In contrast to conventional superconductors, where there is a single temperature scale Tc separating the normal from the superconducting state, the high- temperature superconductors exhibit two additional temperature scales. One is the pseudogap scale T*, below which electronic excitations exhibit an energy gap. The second is the coherence scale Tcoh, below which sharp spectral features appear due to increased lifetime of the excitations. We find that T* and Tcoh are strongly doping dependent and cross each other near optimal doping. We have measured coherent terahertz emission spectra from Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+\delta\ mesa devices, as a function of temperature and mesa bias voltage. The emission frequency is found to be tunable by up to 12% by varying the temperature and bias voltage. We attribute the appearance of tunability to asymmetric boundaries at the top and bottom, and the non-rectangular cross-section of the mesas. This interpretation is consistent with numerical simulations of the dynamics of intrinsic Josephson junctions in the mesa. In strongly anisotropic layered superconductors in tilted magnetic fields the Josephson vortex lattice coexists with the lattice of pancake vortices. Due to the interaction between them, the dissipation of the Josephson-vortex lattice occurs to be very sensitive to the presence of the pancake vortices. If the c-axis magnetic field is smaller then the corresponding lower critical field, the pancake stacks are not formed but the individual pancakes may exist in the fluctuational regime either near surface in large-size samples or in the central region for small-size mesas. We calculate the contribution of such fluctuating pancake vortices to the c-axis conductivity of the Josephson vortex lattice and compare the theoretical results with measurements on small mesas fabricated out of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ crystals. A fingerprint of fluctuating pancakes is characteristic exponential dependence of the c-axis conductivity observed experimentally. We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to probe the electronic excitations of the non-superconducting state that exists between the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at zero doping and the superconducting state at larger dopings in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}. We find that this state is a nodal liquid whose excitation gap becomes zero only at points in momentum space. Despite exhibiting a resistivity characteristic of an insulator and the absence of coherent quasiparticle peaks, this material has the same gap structure as the d-wave superconductor. We observe a smooth evolution of the spectrum across the insulator-to-superconductor transition, which suggests that high temperature superconductivity emerges when quantum phase coherence is established in a non-superconducting nodal liquid., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

The transport properties, upper critical fields, superconducting anisotropy, and critical current density in an iso-valent phosphorus-doped BaFe2As2 single crystal close to optimum doping are investigated in this report. Temperature dependent resistivity and susceptibility show a superconducting transition temperature, Tc, just below 31 K both with sharp transitions. The upper critical field parallel to the ab-plane, Hc2^ab, is above 77 Tesla while that along the c-axis direction, Hc2^c, is just above 36 Tesla, yielding a low superconducting anisotropy ratio ~ 2. The estimated inter-plane coherence length based on the Ginzburg-Landau (G-L) theory indicates BaFe2(As0.68P0.32)2 is still above the point for a dimensional crossover inferring the superconducting layers are not weakly-coupled in this system. The critical current density at 5 K obtained from magnetization loops measurement show a modest Jc as high as 10^5 A/cm2., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Polycrystalline Sr1-xNdxFeAsF samples were prepared at various Nd-doping levels using both a stoichiometric mixture of the starting materials and in slight excess amounts of FeAs. Susceptibility and resistivity of the samples were studied down to 4 K revealing a probable coexistence of superconductivity and a magnetic ordering. Temperature dependence of resistivity for all the Nd-doped samples shows the presence of a transition below 15 K most likely originating from the magnetic ordering of Nd moments, while the spin-density-wave anomaly at 175 K survives up to 0.35 Nd-doping. Superconductivity only occurs above 0.40 Nd-doping with onset maximum Tc reaching as high as 52 K., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures

We report the systematic investigations of the oscillation of the Josephson vortex (JV) flow resistance in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ micro-fabricated junctions with various geometries and superconducting anisotropy parameters. As the applied magnetic field parallel to the $ab$-plane is increased, oscillation with a period corresponding to a $\phi_0/2$ par atomic Josephson junction changes to oscillation with a doubled period. This crossover is scaled by both the junction length and the anisotropy parameter, indicating that the bulk inductive coupling that favors the triangular JV lattice is replaced with the surface deformation energy as the dominant interaction for a JV lattice. These results suggest that the in-phase square JV lattice is pronounced at a higher magnetic field in a smaller and more anisotropic sample., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

By patterning mesoscopic crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) into electromagnetic resonators the oscillations of a large number of intrinsic Josephson junctions can be synchronized into a macroscopic coherent state accompanied by the emission of strong continuous wave THz-radiation. The temperature dependence of the emission is governed by the interplay of self-heating in the resonator and by re-trapping of intrinsic Josephson junctions which can yield a strongly nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the emission power. We present a thermal analysis of a patterned mesa on a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) single crystal that is based on tunneling characteristics of the c-axis stack of ~800 intrinsic Josephson junctions in the mesa. Despite the large mesa volume (e.g., 40x300x1.2 micron3) and power dissipation that result in selfheating and backbending of the current-voltage curve (I-V), there are accessible bias conditions for which significant polarized THz-wave emission can be observed. We estimate the mesa temperature by equating the quasiparticle resistance, Rqp(T), to the ratio V/I over the entire I-V including the backbending region. These temperatures are used to predict the unpolarized black-body radiation reaching our bolometer and there is substantial agreement over the entire I-V. As such, backbending results from the particular Rqp(T) for Bi2212, as first discussed by Fenton, rather than a significant suppression of the energy gap. The magnetic and transport behaviors of cerium substituted iron oxy-arsenide superconductor with x = 0.1 to 0.4 fluoride (F) doping have been investigated in this report. Temperature dependent susceptibility and resistivity measurements showed the 0.1 F-doped sample (CeFeAsO0.9F0.1) has a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of around 30 K. With increasing doping beyond x = 0.2 Tc saturates to around 40 K. Temperature dependent susceptibility measured in different magnetic fields for the under-doped sample showed Meissner effect in low field and the diamagnetism is still visible up to 1 Tesla, with an obvious magnetic transition below 5 K, perhaps originating from magnetic ordering of the rare earth cerium. The corresponding field dependent resistance versus temperature measurements indicated a broadening of less than 3 K for Tc at mid-point by increasing the field to 5 Tesla indicating rather low anisotropy. Fluoride-doped iron-based oxypnictides containing rare-earth gadolinium (GdFeAsO0.8F0.2) and co-doping with yttrium (Gd0.8Y0.2FeAsO0.8F0.2) have been prepared via conventional solid state reaction at ambient pressure. The non-yttrium substituted oxypnictide show superconducting transition as high as 43.9 K from temperature dependent resistance measurements with the Meissner effect observed at a lower temperature of 40.8 K from temperature dependent magnetization measurements. Iron-based oxypnictides substituted with yttrium have been prepared via a conventional solid state reaction. The product after first 50 hours of reaction showed diamagnetic-like transition at around 10 K but was not superconducting, while additional 72 hours of high temperature heat treatment was required to yield superconducting sample which was doped with fluoride. In the underdoped high temperature superconductors, instead of a complete Fermi surface above Tc, only disconnected Fermi arcs appear, separated by regions that still exhibit an energy gap. We show that in this pseudogap phase, the energy-momentum relation of electronic excitations near E_F behaves like the dispersion of a normal metal on the Fermi arcs, but like that of a superconductor in the gapped regions. We argue that this dichotomy in the dispersion is hard to reconcile with a competing order parameter, but is consistent with pairing without condensation.

Dynamic ordering of driven vortex matter has been investigated in the peak effect regime of both amorphous MoGe films and 2H-NbSe2 crystals by mode locking (ML) and dc transport measurements. ML features allow us to trace how the shear rigidity of driven vortices evolves with the average velocity. Determining the onset of ML resonance in different magnetic fields and/or temperatures, we find that the dynamic ordering frequency (velocity) exhibits a striking divergence in the higher part of the peak effect regime. Interestingly, this phenomenon is accompanied by a pronounced peak of dynamic critical current. Mapping out field-temperature phase diagrams, we find that divergent points follow well the thermodynamic melting curve of the ideal vortex lattice over wide field and/or temperature ranges. These findings provide a link between the dynamic and static melting phenomena which can be distinguished from the disorder induced peak effect., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We find that peaks in the autocorrelation of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy data of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ in the superconducting state show dispersive behavior for binding energies smaller than the maximum superconducting energy gap. For higher energies, though, a striking anomalous dispersion is observed that is a consequence of the interaction of the electrons with collective excitations. In contrast, in the pseudogap phase, we only observe dispersionless behavior for the autocorrelation peaks. We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-layered cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of shadow band. We found that the shadow band is exactly the c(2x2) replica of the main band irrespective of the carrier concentration and its intensity is invariable with respect to temperature, doping, and substitution constituents of block layers. This result rules out the possibility of antiferromagnetic correlation and supports the structural origin of shadow band. ARPES experiments on optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 also clarified the existence of the c(2x2) shadow band, demonstrating that the shadow band is not a unique feature of Bi-based cuprates. We introduce a formalism for calculating dynamic response functions using experimental single particle Green's functions derived from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). As an illustration of this procedure we estimate the dynamic spin response of the cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$. We find good agreement with superconducting state neutron data, in particular the $(\pi,\pi)$ resonance with its unusual `reversed magnon' dispersion. The pseudogap phase in the cuprates is a most unusual state of matter: it is a metal, but its Fermi surface is broken up into disconnected segments known as Fermi arcs. Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the anisotropy of the pseudogap in momentum space and the resulting arcs depend only on the ratio T/T*(x), where T*(x) is the temperature below which the pseudogap first develops at a given hole doping x. In particular, the arcs collapse linearly with T/T* and extrapolate to zero extent as T goes to 0. This suggests that the T = 0 pseudogap state is a nodal liquid, a strange metallic state whose gapless excitations are located only at points in momentum space, just as in a d-wave superconductor., Comment: to appear, Nature Physics (July 2006)

We present a mode locking (ML) phenomenon of vortex matter observed around the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe$_2$ pure single crystals. The ML features allow us not only to trace how the shear rigidity of driven vortices persists on approaching the second critical field, but also to demonstrate a dynamic melting transition of driven vortices at a given velocity. We observe the velocity dependent melting signatures in the peak effect regime, which reveal a crossover between the disorder-induced transition at small velocity and the thermally induced transition at large velocity. The autocorrelation of angle resolved photoemission data from the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d shows distinct peaks in momentum space which disperse with binding energy in the superconducting state, but not in the pseudogap phase. Although it is tempting to attribute a non-dispersive behavior in momentum space to some ordering phenomenon, a de-construction of the autocorrelation reveals that the non-dispersive peaks arise not from ordering, but rather from the tips of the Fermi arcs, which themselves do not change with binding energy., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Josephson plasma excitations in the high $T_c$ superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ have been investigated in a wide microwave frequency region (9.8 -- 75 GHz), in particular, in magnetic field applied parallel to the $ab$ plane of the single crystal. In sharp contrast to the case for magnetic fields parallel to the c axis or tilted from the $ab$ plane, it was found that there are two kinds of resonance modes, which are split in energy and possess two distinctly different magnetic field dependences. One always lies higher in energy than the other and has a shallow minimum at about 0.8 kOe, then increases linearly with magnetic field. On the other hand, another mode begins to appear only in a magnetic field (from a few kOe and higher) and has a weakly decreasing tendency with increasing magnetic field. By comparing with a recent theoretical model the higher energy mode can naturally be attributed to the Josephson plasma resonance mode propagating along the primitive reciprocal lattice vector of the Josephson vortex lattice, whereas the lower frequency mode is assigned to the novel phase collective mode of the Josephson vortex lattice, which has never been observed before., Comment: 11 pages and 10 figures

Dynamical nature of the Josephson vortex (JV) system in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi2212) has been investigated in the presence of the c-axis current with magnetic field alignments very close to the $ab$-plane. As a function of magnetic fields, the c-axis JV flux flow resistance oscillates periodically in accordance with the proposed JV triangular structure. We observe that this oscillating period becomes doubled above a certain field, indicating the structure transition from triangle to square structure. This transition field becomes lower in junctions with smaller width perpendicular to the external field. We interpret that this phenomena as the effect of the edge deformation of the JV lattice due to surface current of intrinsic Josephson junctions as pointed by Koshelev., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Response of a mesoscopic superconducting disk to perpendicular magnetic fields is studied by using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method, in which transport properties of several small tunnel junctions attached to the disk are measured simultaneously. This allows us for the first experimental distinction between the giant vortex states and multivortex states. Moreover, we experimentally find magnetic field induced rearrangement and combination of vortices. We examine the momentum and energy dependence of the scattering rate of the high temperature cuprate superconductors using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The scattering rate is of the form a + bw around the Fermi surface for under and optimal doping. The inelastic coefficient "b" is found to be isotropic. The elastic term, "a", however, is found to be highly anisotropic for under and optimally doped samples, with an anisotropy which correlates with that of the pseudogap. This is contrasted with heavily overdoped samples, which show an isotropic scattering rate and an absence of the pseudogap above T_c. We find this to be a generic property for both single and double layer compounds., Comment: Extended version of cond-mat/0404385

One of the interesting features of the photoemission spectra of the high temperature cuprate superconductors is the presence of a large signal (referred to as the "background'') in the unoccupied region of the Brillouin zone. Here we present data indicating that the origin of this signal is extrinsic and is most likely due to strong scattering of the photoelectrons. We also present an analytical method that can be used to subtract the background signal.

We have investigated the Josephson plasma excitations in magnetic fields parallel to the $ab$-plane in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ single crystals in a wide microwave frequency region (9.8 -- 75 GHz). It was found that there are two kind of phase-collective modes: one increases with magnetic fields in higher fields, approaching linear asymptotic dependence with $ck$, which lies well above the inherent plasma frequency $\omega_p$, while the other does not show considerable field dependence. The higher linear mode is attributed to the Josephson plasma mode propagating along the reciprocal lattice vector of the Josephson vortex, whereas the lower one can be ascribed to the oscillation mode of Josephson vortices., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. The complete elastic tensor of YNi_2B_2C was determined by application of the resonant ultrasound spectroscopy technique to a single-crystal sample. Elastic constants were found to be in good agreement with partial results obtained from `time-of-flight' measurements performed on samples cut from the same ingot. We synthesized single crystalline and policrystalline MgB_2 under ambient pressures. The single crystals of MgB_2 were of good quality, where the crystal structure refinements were successfully converged with R = 0.020. The specific heat of policrystalline MgB_2 samples has been measured in a temperature range between 2 and 60 K in magnetic field up to 6 T. The measurement gave the coefficient of the linear term in the electronic specific heat, gamma = 3.51 mJ/K^2 mol, and the jump of the specific heat, 2.8 mJ/K^2 mol at 38.5 K. It is shown from the analysis of the specific heat that the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state differs largely from the conventional BCS weak coupling theory. From the results of measurements of the magnetic properties on single crystal samples, we found a sharp superconducting transition at 38 K with transition width Delta Tc = 0.8 K and the superconducting anisotropy ratio gamma increasing from about 1 near Tc to 4.0 at 25 K., Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures

Josephson vortices are imaged magneto-optically due to their decoration with pancake vortices in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+d}$ single crystals. Peculiarities of interaction between the pancake and Josephson vortices (JV) depending on the values of crossing fields and temperature are studied based on the observations of these decoration patterns. Evidences of the period-doubling in the decoration patterns compared to the JV stack period, migration of JV lines between neighboring stacks, and transitions between different JV configurations are reported. Imaging of the pancake/Josephson vortex decoration patterns over large areas is shown to be a sensitive tool for detecting local variations of the anisotropy and mapping imperfections in layered HTS samples., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, Subm. to Phys. The Josephson plasma resonance has been investigated in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ single crystals in parallel magnetic fields to the $ab$-plane. We found two resonance modes; one appears at higher frequency in high fields above the plasma frequency $\omega_p$ at zero field and absolute zero, and the other lies below $\omega_p$ and is observed only in magnetic fields without considerable field dependence. Two resonance lines were also found in numerical simulations in a single junction model with randomness of the critical current. The higher frequency mode is attributed to the Josephson plasma mode modified by the periodic structure of Josephson vortices, while the lower frequency mode is interpreted as oscillations of Josephson vortices., Comment: Submitted to Proceedings of ISS 2001, Kobe, Japan

The vortex-liquid and vortex-solid phases in single crystals of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ placed in tilted magnetic fields are studied by in-plane resistivity measurements using the Corbino geometry to avoid spurious surface barrier effects. It was found that the anisotropy of the vortex-solid phase increases with temperature and exhibits a maximum at $T\approx 0.97 T_c$. In contrast, the anisotropy of the vortex-liquid rises monotonically across the whole measured temperature range. Below T_{WFM} ~ 2.75K, a weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist in ErNi2B2C. In the present paper, a possibility of a spontaneous vortex phase was examined directly by small angle neutron scattering technique. An external magnetic field was applied to align ferromagnetic domains so that the internal magnetic field induced by the weak ferromagnetism becomes uniform and uniaxial over the bulk sample. When the field is removed, the flux line lattice subsisted below T_{WFM} but disappeared above it. A pinning effect is also discussed. We present a scanning tunneling spectroscopy study on quasiparticle states in vortex cores in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$. The energy of the observed vortex core states shows an approximately linear scaling with the superconducting gap in the region just outside the core. This clearly distinguishes them from conventional localized core states, and is a signature of the mechanism responsible for their discrete appearance in high-temperature superconductors. The energy scaling of the vortex core states also suggests a common nature of vortex cores in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$. A novel description of Josephson vortices (JVs) crossed by the pancake vortices (PVs) is proposed on the basis of the anisotropic London theory. The field distribution of a JV and its energy have been calculated for both dense ($a<\lambda_J$) and dilute ($a>\lambda_J$) PV lattices with distance $a$ between PVs, and the nonlinear JV core size $\lambda_J$. It is shown that the ``shifted'' PV lattice (PVs displaced mainly along JVs in the crossing vortex lattice structure), formed in high out-of-plane magnetic fields transforms into the PV lattice ``trapped'' by the JV sublattice at a certain field, lower than $\Phi_0/\gamma^2s^2$, where $\Phi_0$ is the flux quantum, $\gamma$ is the anisotropy parameter and $s$ is the distance between CuO$_2$ planes. With further decreasing $B_z$, the free energy of the crossing vortex lattice structure (PV and JV sublattices coexist separately) can exceed the free energy of the tilted lattice (common PV-JV vortex structure) in the case of $\gamma s<\lambda_{ab}$ with the in-plane penetration depth $\lambda_{ab}$ if the low ($B_x<\gamma\Phi_0/\lambda_{ab}^2$) or high ($B_x\gtrsim \Phi_0/\gamma s^2$) in-plane magnetic field is applied. It means that the crossing vortex structure is realized in the intermediate field orientations, while the tilted vortex lattice can exist if the magnetic field is aligned near the $c$-axis and the $ab$-plane as well. In the intermediate in-plane fields $\gamma\Phi_0/\lambda_{ab}^2\lesssim B_x \lesssim \Phi_0/\gamma s^2$, the crossing vortex structure with the ``trapped'' PV sublattice seems to settle in until the lock-in transition occurs since this structure has the lower energy with respect to the tilted vortex structure in the magnetic field ${\vec H}$ oriented near the $ab$-plane., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in PRB

We report the first inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments of the resonance in the underdoped regime of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. The energy of the resonance is found to be 34 meV and the temperature dependence shows a smooth evolution through Tc with a remnant persisting in the pseudogap state. Besides the INS data, we present also angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra taken on the same crystals. As a function of temperature, the neutron intensity scales with the square of the ARPES gap estimated by the leading-edge midpoint at (pi,0). We also show that the energy of the collective mode inferred from the peak-dip-hump structure compares well with the energy of the resonance. Based on kinematics, we argue that the correlation of these two energies is consistent with the absence of bilayer splitting in the electronic dispersion., Comment: 5 pages, revtex, 5 encapsulated postscript figures

Josephson plasma resonance has been studied in a wide microwave frequency range between 10 and 52 GHz in a magnetic field parallel to the $ab$-plane in under-doped $\BI$. Above about 30 GHz two resonance modes were observed: one (LT mode) appears at low temperatures and another (HT mode) at higher temperatures, leaving a temperature gap between two regions. These two resonance modes exhibit a sharp contrast each other both on temperture and magnetic field dependences and show distinct characters different entirely from the c-axis Josephson plasma resonance. From temperature and field scan experiments at various frequencies it is suggested that the LT mode can be attributed to the coupled Josephson plasma mode with Josephson vortices, while the HT mode is a new plasma mode associated possibly with the periodic array of Josephson vortices., Comment: submitted to Physica C (Prceedings of Plasma2000, Sendai)

Vortex matter phases and phase transitions are investigated by means of Josephson plasma resonance in under-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ single crystals in a microwave frequency range between 19 and 70 GHz. Accompanied by the vortex lattice melting transition, a jump of the interlayer phase coherence extracted from the field dependence of the plasma frequency was observed. In the solid phase, the interlayer coherence little depends on field at a temperature region well below $T_c$ while it gradually decreases as field increases toward the melting line up to just below $T_c$. As a result, the magnitude of the jump decreases with increasing temperature and is gradually lost in the vicinity of $T_c$. This indicates that the vortex lines formed in the vortex solid phase are thermally meandering and the phase transition becomes weak especially just below $T_c$., Comment: 5pages and 4 figures.
