Abstract

The heating power to access the high confinement mode (H-mode), PLH, scales approximately inversely with the isotope mass of the main ion plasma species as found in (protonic) hydrogen, deuterium and tritium plasmas in many fusion facilities over the last decades. In first dedicated L–H transition experiments at the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak facility with the ITER-like wall (ILW), the power threshold, PLH, was studied systematically in plasmas of pure tritium and hydrogen–tritium mixtures at a magnetic field of 1.8 T and a plasma current of 1.7 MA in order to assess whether this scaling still holds in a metallic wall device. The measured power thresholds, PLH, in Ohmically heated tritium plasmas agree well with the expected isotope scaling for metallic walls and the lowest power threshold was found in Ohmic phases at low density. The measured power thresholds in ion cyclotron heated plasmas of pure tritium or hydrogen–tritium mixtures are significantly higher than the expected isotope mass scaling due to higher radiation levels. However, when the radiated power is taken into account, the ion cyclotron heated plasmas exhibit similar power thresholds as a neutral beam heated plasma, and are close to the scaling. The tritium plasmas in this study tended to higher electron heating fractions and, when heated with ion cyclotron waves, to relatively higher radiation fractions compared to other isotopes potentially impeding access to sustained H-modes. Abstract

The European transport simulator is a fusion machine simulator useful for making predictions of high-performance fusion plasmas, in particular for DT reactors. Recent developments introducing self-consistent simulations of combined RF + NBI heating schemes in which majority, minority and beam ions are simultaneously heated is documented. The predictive simulations are first validated by comparison with the experimental data on a DD JET baseline plasma. In order to prepare the next JET DTE2 experimental campaign, extrapolations of fusion performance on DT plasma from DD plasma are made with a particular focus on ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) computation. Traditional ion cyclotron range of frequency heating models do not permit the study of Coulomb collisional interaction of various ion species simultaneously including neutral beam injection ions, and generally forces one to consider only minority populations. Accounting for multi-population interaction is made possible here by solving coupled sets of Fokker-Planck equations for all ion species adopting the non-linear collision operator for arbitrary distribution functions, accounting for effects, such as the self-collisions of majority (or large minority) populations. To answer the question whether H minority scheme or He-3 minority ICRH scheme is better for boosting the DT fusion performance, minority concentration scans are produced.

Abstract

An overview of the recent results of Lower Hybrid (LH) experiments at JET with the ITER-like wall (ILW) is presented. Topics relevant to LH wave coupling are addressed as well as issues related to ILW and LH system protections. LH wave coupling was studied in conditions determined by ILW recycling and operational constraints. It was concluded that LH wave coupling was not significantly affected and the pre-ILW performance could be recovered after optimising the launcher position and local gas puffing. SOL density measurements were performed using a Li-beam diagnostic. Dependencies on the D2 injection rate from the dedicated gas valve, the LH power and the LH launcher position were analysed. SOL density modifications due to LH were modelled by the EDGE2D code assuming SOL heating by collisional dissipation of the LH wave and/or possible E¥B drifts in the SOL. The simulations matched reasonably well the measured SOL profiles. Observations of arcs and hotspots with visible and IR cameras viewing the LH launcher are presented.

Abstract

The electron heat transport is investigated in ASDEX Upgrade using electron cyclotron heating (ECH) combining steady-state and power modulation schemes. Experiments in which the electron heat flux has been varied in the confinement region while the edge was kept constant were performed. They demonstrate that gradTe and gradTe/Te can be varied by a factor of 3 and 2, respectively. They allow a detailed determination of the transport characteristics by comparing steady-state and modulation data with modelling. The analyses clearly show the existence of a threshold (gradTe/Te)crit above which transport increases. Both steady-state and modulation experiments agree with such a transport model. The experiments have been carried out at low density in the L-mode to ensure low electron–ion coupling and good conditions for studying electron heat transport. The experiments were carried out at two different values of plasma current and show that transport increases at low current, as well-known from global scaling laws for confinement time. In the pure off-axis cases the region inside the ECH deposition is just at the (gradTe/Te)crit threshold, which allows it to be measured directly from the profile of gradTe/Te deduced from the experimental Te profile. Using this technique, it appears that the turbulence threshold agrees with that expected from the trapped electron mode driven turbulence. It has the correct absolute value and seems to have the correct radial dependence that is determined by the trapped electron fraction and by the density gradient. It almost does not vary with other plasma parameters. In contrast, the threshold calculated for electron temperature gradient modes is higher than the experimental values of gradTe/Te and this turbulence is therefore not expected to be excited under these experimental conditions.

6. Fast ion synergistic effects in JET high performance pulses.

Abstract

Fast ion synergistic effects were studied by predictive modelling of JET best performing pulses for various levels of neutral beam injection (NBI) and radio frequency (RF) power. Calculated DD neutron yields were analysed with the intention of separating the impact of RF synergistic effects due to changes in fast ion (FI) distribution function (DF) from secondary effects accompanying the application of RF power, namely changes in Te and Ti. A novel approach in analysing the efficiency of fast ions in fusion reactions based on evaluation of the cumulative reaction rates is outlined and used in the study. Conclusions on the impact of fast ion synergistic effects on fusion performance are based on comparisons of beam-target (BT) and thermal (Th) DD reaction rates. It was found that changes in auxiliary heating power, NBI and RF, by 4 MW will affect DD fusion performance and neutron rates significantly. Simulations of the best performing JET pulses show that for H minority RF heating scheme with available RF power the impact of RF synergistic effects is somewhat lesser than the secondary effects related to changes in Te and Ti. In conditions of much higher RF power the modification in fast ion distribution function (FI DF) and the impact of the fast ions on BT DD fusion becomes significant. The impact of the RF and NBI power on the BT reactivities was found to be of similar order; however, the NBI power has greater impact on reaction rates due to its larger effect on fast ion density. Abstract

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER.
