Search

The radioactivity measurement method using a calorimeter uses the 1st law of thermodynamics. Because of the characteristic of heat energy, the calorimeter is not affected by the geometry of the source. It is also expected that high-level radioactivity can be measured. However, because the measurement range of the calorimeter differs from other radiation detectors, studies are being conducted to secure the possibility of radioactivity measurement. A comparison between the triple-to-double coincidence ratio and calorimeter was performed using 32P, a pure beta-emitter.

A mobile radon calibration system was developed with a high-sensitivity radon detector, a movable calibration chamber, and a 226Ra solid source at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). The high-sensitivity radon detector was based on electrostatic collection mechanism. The volume of the calibration chamber was (1003.8 ± 6.0) L. The mobile radon calibration system was calibrated with 222Rn CRM from the radon primary system at KRISS. The sensitivities were established to be (231.8 ± 16.1) cpm/(kBq/m3) for 218Po and (254.9 ± 17.8) cpm/(kBq/m3) for 214Po, respectively (k = 2).

A search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) was conducted with the single-phase liquid-xenon detector XMASS through inelastic scattering in which $^{129}$Xe nuclei were excited, using an exposure ($\rm 327\; kg \times 800.0 \; days$) 48 times larger than that of our previous study. The inelastic excitation sensitivity was improved by detailed evaluation of background, event classification based on scintillation timing that distinguished $\gamma$-rays and $\beta$-rays, and simultaneous fitting of the energy spectra of $\gamma$-like and $\beta$-like samples. No evidence of a WIMP signal was found. Thus, we set the upper limits of the inelastic channel cross section at 90\% confidence level, for example, $4.1\times 10^{-39} \;{\rm cm^2}$ for a $200\; {\rm GeV}/c^2$ WIMP. This result provides the most stringent limits on the SD WIMP-neutron interaction and is better by a factor of 7.7 at $200\;{\rm GeV}/c^2$ than the existing experimental limit., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

XMASS-I is a single-phase liquid xenon detector whose purpose is direct detection of dark matter. To achieve the low background requirements necessary in the detector, a new model of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), R10789, with a hexagonal window was developed based on the R8778 PMT used in the XMASS prototype detector. We screened the numerous component materials for their radioactivity. During development, the largest contributions to the reduction of radioactivity came from the stem and the dynode support. The glass stem was exchanged to the Kovar alloy one and the ceramic support were changed to the quartz one. R10789 is the first model of Hamamatsu Photonics K. K. that adopted these materials for low background purposes and provided a groundbreaking step for further reductions of radioactivity in PMTs. Measurements with germanium detectors showed 1.2$\pm$0.3 mBq/PMT of $^{226}$Ra, less than 0.78 mBq/PMT of $^{228}$Ra, 9.1$\pm$2.2 mBq/PMT of $^{40}$K, and 2.8$\pm$0.2 mBq/PMT of $^{60}$Co. Hidden photons and axion-like particles are candidates for cold dark matter if they were produced non-thermally in the early universe. We conducted a search for both of these bosons using 800 live-days of data from the XMASS detector with 327 kg of liquid xenon in the fiducial volume. No significant signal was observed, and thus we set constraints on the $\alpha' / \alpha$ parameter related to kinetic mixing of hidden photons and the coupling constant $g_{Ae}$ of axion-like particles in the mass range from 40 to 120 keV/$c^2$, resulting in $\alpha' / \alpha < 6 \times 10^{-26}$ and $g_{Ae} < 4 \times 10^{-13}$. A new movable 3PM-γ coincidence system, based on 4πβ(LS)−γ coincidence counting, for activity measurement of β-γ emitters has been designed at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). The system incorporates 3 PM tubes on the plane and two detectors placed above and below the center of the plane. The 3 PM tubes for β–counters in the plane are movable up to 100 mm from a liquid scintillation vial, thus enabling the variation of β−detection efficiencies by a geometrical technique. A NaI(Tl) γ-counter was set above for the present work. The β-event is determined by counting the logical sum of three double coincidences. All the necessary electronics, i.e., logical sum, adjusting the duration of dead-time of each counting channel and coincidence resolving times, and analyzing coincidence relation, were specially designed to be fabricated in an integrated circuit. Details of the detectors, the electronics, the overall movable 3PM-γ coincidence system are presented, as well as the results of investigations to assess its operating characteristics. Validation measurements have been performed with 60Co and 57Co sources. The highest β−detection efficiency achieved with 60Co and 57Co was 97% and 95%, respectively. The activity concentration determined with a new system agreed with calibrated values within the uncertainty range. Further results from validation measurements and the corresponding uncertainty budgets are presented.

We successfully developed a new photomultiplier tube (PMT) with a three-inch diameter, convex-shaped photocathode, R13111. Its prominent features include good performance and ultra-low radioactivity. The convex-shaped photocathode realized a large photon acceptance and good timing resolution. Low radioactivity was achieved by three factors: (1) the glass material was synthesized using low-radioactive-contamination material; (2) the photocathode was produced with $^{39}$K-enriched potassium; and (3) the purest grade of aluminum material was used for the vacuum seal. As a result each R13111 PMT contains only about 0.4 mBq of $^{226}$Ra, less than 2 mBq of $^{238}$U, 0.3 mBq of $^{228}$Ra, 2 mBq of $^{40}$K and 0.2 mBq of $^{60}$Co. We also examined and resolved the intrinsic leakage of Xe gas into PMTs that was observed in several older models. We thus succeeded in developing a PMT that has low background, large angular acceptance with high collection efficiency, good timing resolution, and long-term stable operation. These features are highly desirable for experiments searching for rare events beyond the standard model, such as dark matter particle interactions and neutrinoless double beta decay events.

We have searched for exotic neutrino-electron interactions that could be produced by a neutrino millicharge, by a neutrino magnetic moment, or by dark photons using solar neutrinos in the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. We observed no significant signals in 711 days of data. We obtain an upper limit for neutrino millicharge of 5.4×10−12e at 90% confidence level assuming all three species of neutrino have common millicharge. We also set flavor-dependent limits assuming the respective neutrino flavor is the only one carrying a millicharge, 7.3×10−12e for νe, 1.1×10−11e for νμ, and 1.1×10−11e for ντ. These limits are the most stringent yet obtained from direct measurements. We also obtain an upper limit for the neutrino magnetic moment of 1.8×10−10 Bohr magnetons. In addition, we obtain upper limits for the coupling constant of dark photons in the U(1)B−L model of 1.3×10−6 if the dark photon mass is 1×10−3 MeV/c2, and 8.8×10−5 if it is 10 MeV/c2.

The 129I standardization, using the movable 4πβ(LS)−X(NaI(Tl)) coincidence system, was performed for two 129I radioactive sources – one was dissolved in 0.1M NaOH solution and the other in 0.1M HNO3 solution. The system incorporates three movable PM tubes for a β–counter placed on a plane and a X-ray detector that can be moved up to the bottom of the vial. The β-efficiency depending on the amount of radioactive solution was investigated with 14 liquid scintillation samples prepared by gravimetrically dispensing 4.4–145 mg of 129I radioactive solution. The β-efficiencies above 90% were observed at less than 56 mg, but it was at most 70% at 145 mg. This occurred regardless of the activity of the sample or the type of chemical solution used to dissolve 129I source. The activity concentration of each 129I source was determined by efficiency-extrapolation method for samples with an activity range of 0.28–4.5 kBq. The β-efficiency points were derived over 10 intervals by moving 3-PM tubes in fine steps of about 1 mm from the sample. The highest value for β-efficiency was 95%. The combined uncertainty were 0.25% and 0.26%, respectively. The stated precision obtained using the system is better than that previously reported in the literature obtained by the triple to double coincidence ratio (TDCR) or the CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing method.

We have studied to validate the calorimetric method by comparing the 123I radioactivity measurement results with the national standard. The reason for using 123I was to determine how much it absorbs radiation decay energy due to γ and electron capture transitions. In addition, due to the characteristic of the calorimeter, stabilization time is required, and we have determined that the half-life time of 123I is long enough to overcome this problem. We compared two measurement results (calorimeter and ion chamber) and confirmed that the rate of power reduction in the calorimeter was similar to the half-life time of 123I.

The finite–element analysis was done to optimize position-sensing coplanar grid electrode geometry. CdZnTe crystals manufactured by PAM-XIAMEN with customized electrode geometry have been tested. After digitizing pre-amplifier signals, trapezoidal digital filter was adopted to enhance the signal to noise ratio. Energy resolution of 2.7% FWHM at 662 keV γ-ray energy was obtained. The measured results show the dramatic improvement with position-sensing technique.

The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) participated in the BIPM.RI(II)-K4.Tc-99 m comparison of activity measurements of 99mTc. We develop the national primary standard for 99mTc solution used during the comparison. We use two primary liquid scintillation counting techniques for the standardization: digital coincidence counting with the 4πβ(LS)-γ(NaI(T1))system and triple-to-double coincidence ratio counting. Both methods give consistent results for the specific activity of a 99mTc solution. Adopting the result from the DCC method as the reference value of the 99mTc measurement, we evaluate the standard uncertainty of 0.856% for the KRISS primary standard of the 99mTc activity. The K4 comparison result shows that the newly-established KRISS primary standard lies within the standard uncertainty with the key comparison reference value defined from other 99mTc measurements.

A 24 segmented HPGe coaxial detector was set up with a digitized data acquisition system (DAQ). The DAQ was composed of a digitizer (5 × 107sampling/s), a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and a real time operating system. The Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM), rise time, signal characteristics, and spectra of a 137Cs source were evaluated. The data were processed using an in-house developed gamma-ray tracking system.

Purpose/objective(s) The role and indication of adjuvant therapy in perihilar cholangiocarcinoma remains to be elucidated. The aim of this analysis was to identify the effects of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) and define the clearance cut-off of various margins in perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. Materials/methods A retrospective analysis was performed on 290 patients who received definitive resection from January 2000 through December 2015. The exclusion criteria were as follows: (a) palliative resection (n = 91), (b) multiple primary cancer diagnosis within 5 years (n = 30), (c) adjuvant therapy at outside institution (n = 19). Treatment result analysis for various end-points including overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), locoregional-recurrence free survival (LRRFS), and distant-metastasis free survival (DMFS) was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results Among 150 patients of analyzed cohort, adjuvant therapy was performed in 112 (74.7%) patients: chemotherapy alone (n = 6), radiotherapy (n = 6), and CCRT (n = 100). Number of patients with nodal and margin involvement were 45 (31.9%) and 58 (38.7%), respectively. Median follow-up duration was 24.3 months. In univariate analysis, nodal involvement (HR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.1-2.4, P = 0.009), lymphatic invasion (HR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.1-2.3, P = 0.011) were adverse prognostic factors for OS. In multivariate analysis, margin involvement (HR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.1-2.8, P = 0.019) was an adverse prognostic factor for OS. CCRT was associated with better overall survival (HR = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3-0.9, P = 0.012). On subgroup analysis for patients with nodal and/or margin involvement, survival gain was found with use of CCRT in both OS and LRRFS (P = 0.02 and P = 0.02, respectively). Not only margin involvement but, close resection margin was related with poor treatment results. Clearance cut-off for vascular and radial resection margin was 0.1cm and 0.2cm, respectively (P = 0.0192). Conclusion Negative surgical margins and CCRT as adjuvant treatment were statistically significant prognostic factors. Treatment result was improved with CCRT for patients with margin and/or nodal involvement. Suggested clearance for vascular and radial margin from current analysis was 0.1cm and 0.2cm, respectively.

The coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) plays a crucial role at the final evolution of stars. The detection of it would be of importance in astroparticle physics. Among all available neutrino sources, galactic supernovae give the highest neutrino flux in the MeV range. Among all liquid xenon dark matter experiments, XMASS has the largest sensitive volume and light yield. The possibility to detect galactic supernova via the CEvNS-process on xenon nuclei in the current XMASS detector was investigated. The total number of events integrated in about 18 seconds after the explosion of a supernova 10~kpc away from the Earth was expected to be from 3.5 to 21.1, depending on the supernova model used to predict the neutrino flux, while the number of background events in the same time window was measured to be negligible. All lead to very high possibility to detect CEvNS experimentally for the first time utilizing the combination of galactic supernovae and the XMASS detector. In case of a supernova explosion as close as Betelgeuse, the total observable events can be more than ten thousand, making it possible to distinguish different supernova models by examining the evolution of neutrino event rate in XMASS., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) participated, in 2015, in an international Key Comparison (KC) of gaseous radon-222 activity named CCRI (II) -K2.Rn-222 to confirm international equivalence of KRISS-established gaseous radon-222 measurement standards. LNHB acted as KC pilot laboratory. This paper describes the KC measurement procedure followed at KRISS using the defined solid angle counting method together with auxiliary relative measurement methods and presents the results.

We have developed an online digital signal processing system based on an FPGA. The system consists of pile-up rejection, baseline restorer, peak detection and pole-zero cancellation for evaluation of deposited energy in the detector. The shaping algorithm employed is a Moving Window Deconvolution (MWD) to shape digitized data into a trapezoidal form. For the purpose of verification, the developed digital system was tested for 137Cs gamma rays. The entire system is programmed using the LabVIEW environment.

A comparison of calculations of the activity of a 3H2O liquid scintillation source using the same experimental data set collected at the LNE-LNHB with a triple-to-double coincidence ratio (TDCR) counter was completed. A total of 17 laboratories calculated the activity and standard uncertainty of the LS source, using the files with experimental data. The results, as well as relevant information on the computation techniques are presented and analysed in this paper. All results are compatible, even if there is a significant dispersion between the reported uncertainties. An output of this comparison is the estimation of the dispersion of TDCR measurement results when measurement conditions are well defined. We performed a search for event bursts in the XMASS-I detector associated with 11 gravitational-wave events detected during LIGO/Virgo’s O1 and O2 periods. Simple and loose cuts were applied to the data collected in the full 832 kg xenon volume around the detection time of each gravitational-wave event. The data were divided into four energy regions ranging from keV to MeV. Without assuming any particular burst models, we looked for event bursts in sliding windows with various time width from 0.02 to 10 s. The search was conducted in a time window between − 400 and + 10 , 000 s from each gravitational-wave event. For the binary neutron star merger GW170817, no significant event burst was observed in the XMASS-I detector and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on neutrino fluence for the sum of all the neutrino flavors via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The obtained upper limit was (1.3–2.1) × 10 11 cm − 2 under the assumption of a Fermi-Dirac spectrum with average neutrino energy of 20 MeV. The neutrino fluence limits for mono-energetic neutrinos in the energy range between 14 and 100 MeV were also calculated. Among the other 10 gravitational wave events detected as the binary black hole mergers, a burst candidate with a 3.0 σ significance was found at 1801.95–1803.95 s in the analysis for GW151012. However, no significant deviation from the background in the reconstructed energy and position distributions was found. Considering the additional look-elsewhere effect of analyzing the 11 GW events, the significance of finding such a burst candidate associated with any of them is 2.1 σ .

Main text A comparison of the activity concentration of an 55Fe solution was organized by the POLATOM under the auspices of the CCRI(II). The solution was sent to thirteen laboratories; ready-to-measure sources were also prepared using the same 55Fe solution in diffusive (polyethylene) vials and sent to twelve laboratories. Twelve measurement reports were received. The results, as well as relevant information on the measurement techniques, are presented and analysed in this paper. Double electron capture is a rare nuclear decay process in which two orbital electrons are captured simultaneously in the same nucleus. Measurement of its two-neutrino mode would provide a new reference for the calculation of nuclear matrix elements whereas observation of its neutrinoless mode would demonstrate lepton number violation. A search for two-neutrino double electron capture on $^{124}$Xe is performed using 165.9 days of data collected with the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. No significant excess above background was observed and we set a lower limit on the half-life as $4.7 \times 10^{21}$ years at 90% confidence level. The obtained limit has ruled out parts of some theoretical expectations. We obtain a lower limit on the $^{126}$Xe two-neutrino double electron capture half-life of $4.3 \times 10^{21}$ years at 90% confidence level as well., 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

For disseminating the gaseous radon standard traceable to the KRISS primary system based on the defined solid angle counting method, two kinds of radon CRM (a glass ampule type and a stainless steel cylinder type) were developed. The activity of the CRM was certified by subtracting a residual activity from the measured activity by the primary system. After certification, the ampule CRM was used to calibrate a radon-monitoring instrument and the cylinder CRM to calibrate an HPGe system. We also improved the measurement procedure of the radon primary system. In a typical radon energy spectrum, the radon peak overlaps with the polonium peak. For more reliable and accurate measurement of radon activity, a fitting method was adopted for the evaluation of radon area in the alpha energy spectrum. The result of radon activity evaluated by using the fitting method is in good agreement with that by the previous integration method.

Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) is developing a length-compensated proportional counting (LCPC) system as a primary system for standardization of beta emitting radioactive gases. The pilot experiment was performed with 85Kr and the optimized high voltage and pressure were found to be 1700 V and 0.203 MPa, respectively. The total activity of 85Kr was deduced by the length compensation of each count. The expanded uncertainty was estimated to be around 0.8% (k = 2) for the 85Kr measurement.

A radon calibration system is being developed with a high-sensitivity radon detector using electrostatic collection and an alpha spectrometer. Eight radon cells, each with a volume of 1.354 L, are integrated to achieve a high-sensitivity radon monitor with a total detector volume of 10.832 L. The sensitivity is estimated to be 35.6 ± 0.2 (36.8 ± 0.2) times higher relative to the RAD7 radon monitor for the detection of 218Po (214Po), respectively.
