Objective To compare predictive validity of the Wilson Sims Fall Risk Assessment Tool (WSFRAT) with that of the Morse Fall Scale (MFS) in psychogeriatric inpatients. Methods Psychogeriatric patients from Shatin Hospital, Tai Po Hospital, Castle Peak Hospital, and United Christian Hospital who had fall incident between April 2019 and April 2020 were identified. Their fall risks were assessed by the WSFRAT and the MFS, and their falls incidents during hospitalisation were recorded. Patients were classified as having high fall risk when their MFS score was ≥45 and when their WSFRAT score was ≥7. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the two scales were calculated. Results We identified 183 (90 male and 93 female) psychogeriatric patients aged ≥65 years who had fall incident and were assessed by both the WSFRAT and the MFS during the study period. Among the 183 patients, four sustained a fall during hospital stay, giving a prevalence of 2.19%. All four patients were classified as having high risk of fall by WSFRAT, but only two of them were classified so by MFS. The sensitivity of WSFRAT was 100%, which was higher than the 50% by MFS, but specificity of MFS was higher than that of WSFRAT (45.81% vs 54.75%). Conclusion WSFRAT is a better fall risk assessment scale for psychiatric inpatients than MFS, because of higher sensitivity (100% vs 50%). It has items specific to psychiatric patients and should replace MFS in psychiatric settings.

Background Whilst current evidence are in favour of metabolic health and non-obesity in the reduction of incident cardiovascular disease, little is known regarding the prognosis across the metabolic phenotypes once cardiovascular disease occurs. This study examined the prognosis of patients with significant aortic stenosis (AS) based on the presence of metabolic health and obesity. Methods This retrospective cohort on consecutive patients presenting with moderate-to-severe AS to a tertiary hospital between 2010 and 2015. Patients were allocated into 4 groups based on obesity and metabolic health: metabolically healthy obese (MHO), metabolically healthy non-obese (MHNO), metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO) and metabolically unhealthy non-obese (MUNO). Metabolic health was defined in accordance to Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Cox regression examined independent associations between mortality and metabolic phenotypes, adjusting for aortic valve area, ejection fraction, age, sex, chronic kidney disease and AVR as a time-dependent covariate. Results Of 727 patients, the majority (51.6%) were MUNO, followed by MUO (32.7%), MHNO (11.4%), and MHO (4.3%). MHNO had the highest mortality (43.0%), followed by the MUNO (37.5%), MUO (30.0%) and MHO (6.9%) groups (p=0.001). Compared to MHNO, MHO (HR 0.159, 95% CI 0.038–0.668, p=0.012) and MUO (HR 0.614, 95% CI 0.403–0.937, p=0.024) were independently associated with lower all-cause mortality rates, after adjusting for confounders. In obese patients, metabolic health had favourable survival compared to metabolically unhealthy (p=0.015), but this protective impact of metabolic health was not observed in overweight or normal weight individuals. Obesity had favourable survival compared to overweight and normal weight, in both metabolically health (p=0.002) and unhealthy (p=0.007) patients, Conclusion MHO patients with AS have the most favourable prognosis whilst the seemingly healthy MHNO group had the worst survival. There should be a paradigm shift towards prioritising metabolic health rather than weight reduction in patients with significant AS. Funding Acknowledgement Type of funding sources: None.

Introduction Domestic robots have great potential to be developed as a useful and supportive device for elders in domestic setting. To achieve the intended purpose, the designs of domestic robots should make reference to elders’ preferences. The Assistance Preference Checklist is developed to assess elders’ preferences on receiving assistance from domestic robots. It comprises of 48 home-based task under six categories including personal care, leisure activities, health assistance, chores, information management, and manipulating objects. Altogether, these tasks are considered important for the elders to fulfil their general health needs and maintain their homes. The Assistance Preference Checklist is valid and reliable. To adapt it in the Chinese population, the Assistance Preference Checklist has been translated from English to Chinese according to the standard translation model. This study aims to validate the Chinese version of the Assistance Preference Checklist (the checklist). Method This was a validation study. Semantic and content equivalence of the checklist was evaluated by an expert panel (five academic specialized on instrument validation or translation and 15 nurses specialized on geriatrics). Content validity of the checklist was assessed by another expert panel (one academic specialized on instrument validation and two nurses specialized on geriatrics). Internal consistency of the checklist was determined by Cronbach's method on a convenience sample of 50 Chinese-speaking elders in Hong Kong. Results The checklist demonstrated good semantic and content equivalence with the original English version. The experts agreed that it was appropriately translated. The checklist demonstrated good content validity by having a content validity index of 1.00. Additionally, the checklist reported satisfactory internal consistency by having a Cronbach's alpha of 0.95. Conclusion The Chinese version of the Assistance Preference Checklist is a useful instrument for assessing elders’ preferences on receiving assistance from domestic robots. Findings provide evidence on its validity and reliability.

Introduction Aging leads to decline in physical and functional ability. Strengthening the domestic support enables elders to manage their health and living at home and reduce their need for residential service. Domestic robots can potentially provide a broad range of support to the elders. However, relatively little research attention has investigated elders’ preferences on it. This study aims to investigate elders’ preferences on receiving assistance from domestic robots. Methods This cross-sectional descriptive study recruited a convenient sample of 365 robotic inexperienced elders (65-99 years old). It used the Assistance Preference Checklist to assess participants’ preferences on receiving assistance from domestic robots in 48 home-based tasks under six aspects including personal care, leisure activities, health assistance, chores, information management, and manipulating objects. It used t-test and one-way analysis of variance to compare the difference in preferences between participants with different demographic and health characteristics. Results Overall, participants preferred domestic robots to assist in tasks under the aspect on chores, information management, and manipulating objects. Specifically, males indicated a higher preference for domestic robots to assist in maintaining lawn or raking leaves than females (p = 0.05). Married participants indicated a higher preference for domestic robots to assist in getting information on weather/news than unmarried participants (p = 0.049). In contrast, participants who were partially dependent and fully dependent indicated a higher preference for domestic robots to assist in tasks under the personal care aspect such as shaving, bathing, washing/combing hair, getting dressed, walking, and brushing teeth (p Conclusion This study provides insight for manufacturers to develop domestic robots with specific capabilities which are important to support elders’ living in the community. Moreover, it helps the care providers to identify domestic robots with the required capabilities that meet elders’ specific preferences.

Purpose The aim of this prospective, randomized study was to compare the performance of a rotator interval approach with the posterior glenohumeral approach for ultrasound-guided contrast injection prior to MR shoulder arthrography. Method This study was approved by the institutional review board. One hundred and twenty consecutive patients referred for MR shoulder arthrography were randomized into four groups: rotator interval approach in-plane (n = 30); rotator interval approach out-of-plane (n = 30); posterior approach in-plane (n = 30); and posterior approach out-of plane (n = 30). Outcome measures included procedure time, number of injection attempts, patient-reported pain score (0−10), and radiologist-reported technical difficulty (0–10). MR arthrograms were assessed for adequacy of joint distension, diagnostic utility, and extra-capsular contrast leakage. Results All 120 patients had a successful ultrasound-guided injection with adequate joint distension and diagnostic utility for MR arthrography. In-plane needle guidance was less technically demanding, quicker, required fewer injection attempts, and had a lower frequency of contrast leakage than out-of-plane needle guidance. The posterior glenohumeral approach was less technically demanding though had a higher frequency of contrast leakage and caused more patient discomfort than the rotator interval approach. Conclusion For ultrasound-guided shoulder joint injection, an in-plane approach is preferable. The posterior glenohumeral approach is less technically demanding though causes more patients discomfort than the rotator interval approach possibly due to the longer needle path.

To investigate the accuracy of ultrasound in characterising the type of mass and likelihood of malignancy in deep soft tissue masses. Five hundred seventy-nine deep soft tissue masses were prospectively studied by ultrasound. Masses (n = 137) with prior MRI or CT were not included. Following ultrasound examination, the likely nature of the mass as well as the confidence of the reporting radiologist (‘fully confident’ versus ‘not fully confident’) about the ultrasound diagnosis was recorded. Clinical and ultrasound diagnoses were compared with the histological diagnosis which was available in 134 (23%) of the 579 masses. Compared with histology, clinical and ultrasound accuracy for characterising the type of mass were 47% and 88% respectively when all differential diagnoses were considered. The radiologist was fully confident regarding the type of 436 (75%) of 579 masses and, in this setting, for those cases that could be compared with histology, diagnostic accuracy was 96%. For the remaining masses, where the radiologist was not fully confident, accuracy compared with histology was 58% for the first differential diagnosis and 80% for all differential diagnoses. For identifying malignancy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value of ultrasound were 97%, 58%, 67%, and 99% respectively. Ultrasound alone was considered sufficient for diagnostic workup in over half of all deep soft tissue masses. Ultrasound is useful at characterising and recognising malignancy in deep soft tissue masses. Provided local practice patterns are favourable, ultrasound may be considered a first-line investigation in the diagnostic workup of deep soft tissue masses. • In three-quarters of cases, one can be fully confident about characterising the nature of deep soft tissue masses on ultrasound and, for those fully confident cases that could be compared with histology, the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound was 96%. • Ultrasound can correctly recognise nearly all malignant deep soft tissue masses but some benign masses will also be considered possibly malignant. • Ultrasound alone was considered sufficient for imaging workup in over half of deep soft tissue masses.

To (i) devise a new semi-quantitative scoring system known as Early Rheumatoid Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Score (ERAMRS) to assess inflammation of the wrist on magnetic resonance imaging in early rheumatoid arthritis and to (ii) test ERAMRS and other MR scoring systems against everyday used clinical scorings. One hundred six treatment-naive patients (81 females, 25 males, mean age 53 ± 12 years) with early rheumatoid arthritis (ERA) underwent clinical/serological testing as well as 3-T MRI examination of the most symptomatic wrist. Clinical assessment included Disease Activity Score-28 and Health Assessment Questionnaire; erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein were measured. MR imaging data was scored in all patients using three devised MR semi-quantitative scoring systems, namely, the (a) ERAMRS system, (b) Rheumatoid Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (RAMRIS) system, and the (c) McQueen Score system. Synovitis was present in 106 (100%), tenosynovitis in 98 (92%), and bone marrow edema in 84 (79%) of 106 ERA wrists. Metal-oxide based Electrochemical Random-Access Memory (MO-ECRAM) has shown unique potential as a nonvolatile element for analog in-memory computation of deep learning tasks. Using a specially designed interdigitated device geometry, we investigate transient effects of MO-ECRAM and correlate them with programming speed, read speed and read-after write speed. Programming speed is shown to exponentially increase with programming voltage. Read speed reached the ns range, while read-after-write delay can be limited by decay of write transients in the studied devices. Two mechanisms of channel modulation were found; a prompt field effect and a field-induced memory effect. The charge control of the prompt effect was vastly greater than that of the memory effect. So to reduce and mitigate transient impact, we discuss both device improvements, and learning algorithm engineering strategies.

Intensive care is expensive, and the numbers of intensive care unit (ICU) beds and trained specialist medical staff able to provide services in Hong Kong are limited. The most recent increase in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections over July to August 2020 resulted in more than 100 new cases per day for a prolonged period. The increased numbers of critically ill patients requiring ICU admission posed a capacity challenge to ICUs across the territory, and it may be reasonably anticipated that should a substantially larger outbreak occur, ICU services will be overwhelmed. Therefore, a transparent and fair prioritisation process for decisions regarding patient ICU admission is urgently required. This triage tool is built on the foundation of the existing guidelines and framework for admission, discharge, and triage that inform routine clinical practice in Hospital Authority ICUs, with the aim of achieving the greatest benefit for the greatest number of patients from the available ICU resources. This COVID-19 Crisis Triage Tool is expected to provide structured guidance to frontline doctors on how to make triage decisions should ICU resources become overwhelmed by patients requiring ICU care, particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic. The triage tool takes the form of a detailed decision aid algorithm based on a combination of established prognostic scores, and it should increase objectivity and transparency in triage decision making and enhance decision-making consistency between doctors within and across ICUs in Hong Kong. However, it remains an aid rather than a complete substitute for the carefully considered judgement of an experienced intensive care clinician.

A nonperturbative determination of the energy-momentum tensor is essential for understanding the physics of strongly coupled systems. The ability of the Wilson flow to eliminate divergent contact terms makes it a practical method for renormalizing the energy-momentum tensor on the lattice. In this paper, we utilize the Wilson flow to define a procedure to renormalize the energy-momentum tensor for a three-dimensional massless scalar field in the adjoint of $SU(N)$ with a $\varphi^4$ interaction on the lattice. In this theory the energy-momentum tensor can mix with $\varphi^2$ and we present numerical results for the mixing coefficient for the $N=2$ theory., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures

The Milos, Christiana-Santorini-Kolumbo (CSK) and Kos-Yali-Nisyros (KYN) volcanic complexes of the Aegean Volcanic Arc have repeatedly produced highly explosive eruptions from at least similar to 360 ka into historic times and still show recent unrest. We present the marine tephra record from an array of 50, up to 7.4 m long, sediment cores along the arc collected in 2017 during RV Poseidon cruise POS513, which complements earlier work on distal to ultra-distal eastern Mediterranean sediment cores. A unique set of glass-shard trace element (LA-ICPMS) compositions complements our major element (EMP) data on 220 primary ash layers and 40 terrestrial samples to support geochemical fingerprinting for correlations with 19 known tephras from all three volcanic complexes and with the 39 ka Campanian Ignimbrite from the Campi Flegrei, Italy. The correlations include 11 eruptions from CSK (Kameni, Kolumbo 1650, Minoan, Cape Riva, Cape Tripiti, Upper Scoriae 1 and 2, Middle Pumice, Cape Thera, Lower Pumice, Cape Therma 3). We identify a previously unknown widespread tephra from a plinian eruption on Milos (Firiplaka Tephra). Near the KYN we correlate marine tephras with the Kos Plateau Tuff, the Yali 1 and Yali 2 tephras, and the Upper and Lower Pumice on Nisyros. Between these two major tephras, we found two tephras from Nisyros not yet observed on land. The four Nisyros tephras form a systematic trend toward more evolved magma compositions. In the companion paper we use the tephrostratigraphic framework established here to constrain new eruption ages and magnitudes as a contribution to volcanic hazard assessment.

In the holographic approach to cosmology, cosmological observables are described in terms of correlators of a three-dimensional boundary quantum field theory. As a concrete model, we study the 3$d$ massless $SU(N)$ scalar matrix field theory. In this work, we focus on the renormalisation of the energy-momentum tensor 2-point function, which can be related to the CMB power spectra. Here we present a non-perturbative procedure to remove divergences resulting from the loss of translational invariance on the lattice, by imposing Ward identities. BACKGROUND This study compares median nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) measurements at the wrist obtained with ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using cadaveric measurements as the gold standard. METHODS Median nerve CSA was measured using US and MRI in 9 cadaveric wrists obtained from 5 subjects at 5 locations: distal forearm, proximal to tunnel inlet, at tunnel inlet, at tunnel outlet, and distal to tunnel outlet and then on identical cadaveric transverse sections obtained with a bandsaw. All US, MRI, and cadaveric measurements were repeated to determine reliability. Median nerves of 10 patients with clinical carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) were measured with US and MRI using an identical method US. Triangular fibrocartilage complex is a major stabilizer of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ). However, triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tear is difficult to be diagnosed on MRI for its intrinsic small and thin structure with complex anatomy. The purpose of this article is to review the anatomy of TFCC, state of art MRI imaging technique, normal appearance and features of tear on MRI according to the Palmar’s classification. Atypical tear and limitations of MRI in diagnosis of TFCC tear are also discussed.

We present a study of the IR behaviour of a three-dimensional super-renormalisable quantum field theory (QFT) consisting of a scalar field in the adjoint of $SU(N)$ with a $\varphi^4$ interaction. A bare mass is required for the theory to be massless at the quantum level. In perturbation theory the critical mass is ambiguous due to infrared (IR) divergences and we indeed find that at two-loops in lattice perturbation theory the critical mass diverges logarithmically. It was conjectured long ago in [Jackiw 1980, Appelquist 1981] that super-renormalisable theories are nonperturbatively IR finite, with the coupling constant playing the role of an IR regulator. Using a combination of Markov-Chain-Monte-Carlo simulations of the lattice-regularised theory, both frequentist and Bayesian data analysis, and considerations of a corresponding effective theory we gather evidence that this is indeed the case., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRL, added references, updated plots, extended discussion of IR behaviour in perturbation theory and EFT

We demonstrate a CMOS-compatible, metal-oxide based Electro-Chemical Random-Access Memory (MO- ECRAM) for high-speed, low-power neuromorphic computing. The device demonstrates symmetric and linear conductance update, large on/off ratio and good retention while also withstanding high temperature treatments necessary for BEOL compatibility. Resistive switching in MO-ECRAM is observed with voltage pulses down to 10 ns and scales exponentially with voltage pulse amplitude, enabling parallel array operations without any selector/access devices. For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate fundamental techniques for fully- parallel array operations, stochastic update scheme and zero-shifting technique, and show a successful stochastic gradient descent algorithm demonstration in hardware using a MO- ECRAM array.

Introduction Over the past 17 years (2002–2018), 898,831 people participated in the Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon (HKSCM). Purpose We aim to study the incidence of marathon-related sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and non-fatal myocardial injury (NFMI). Methods All the HKSCM related admissions between 2002 and 2017 were retrieved from the accident and emergency department admission records. We reviewed the data of HKSCM runners admitted for SCA and NFMI. Results Fourteen and thirty-nine runners were admitted for SCA (Mean age 38±13 years-old, 12 men) and NFMI (Mean age 42±12 years-old; 34 men) respectively. Among the SCA runners, the arrest rhythms could not be retrieved in 3 cases. In the remaining 11 SCA runners, the arrest rhythms were ventricular fibrillation (VF) (N=6), pulseless-electrical activity (PEA) (N=3), and asystole (N=2). Nine of the 14 SCA runners were successfully resuscitated. Only 2 out of the 14 SCA runners had significant atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) requiring coronary angioplasty. Among the SCA runners, the etiologies of cardiac arrest were myocardial infarction (MI) (N=2), ischemic cardiomyopathy with VF (N=1), idiopathic VF (N=3), malignant coronary anomaly (N=1), and idiopathic (N=5). Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was performed in 2 SCA runner with MI. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators were implanted in 1 resuscitated runner with VF. Postmortem examination of the 3 deceased runners showed significant CAD in two and was unrevealing in one. Among the 39 NFMI runners, coronary angiograms (CAG) or CT coronary angiogram were performed in 14 cases (36%), which showed minor CAD or unremarkable findings in 7 runners, and significant CAD in 7 runners. PCI and coronary artery bypass were performed in 5 and 2 NFMI runners respectively. Only 8 out of 39 NFMI runners reported chest pain. Significant ischemic ECG changes were detected in 9 out of 39 NFMI runners. Invasive CAGs were not performed in the remaining NFMI runners due to low pre-test likelihood of CAD and normal non-invasive test results. Conclusions The incidence of SCA and mortality among HKSCM runners was 1.56 per 100,000 and 0.56 per 100,000 respectively. The incidence of NFMI was 4.3 per 100,000. Coronary artery disease, coronary anomaly and idiopathic VF were the commonest etiologies of SCA.

To investigate the diagnostic performance of ultrasound-guided synovial biopsy. Clinical notes, pathology and microbiology reports, ultrasound and other imaging studies of 100 patients who underwent 111 ultrasound-guided synovial biopsies were reviewed. Biopsies were compared with the final clinical diagnosis established after synovectomy (n = 43) or clinical/imaging follow-up (n = 57) (mean 30 months). Other than a single vasovagal episode, no complication of synovial biopsy was encountered. One hundred and seven (96 %) of the 111 biopsies yielded synovium histologically. Pathology ± microbiology findings for these 107 conclusive biopsies comprised synovial tumour (n = 30, 28 %), synovial infection (n = 18, 17 %), synovial inflammation (n = 45, 42 %), including gouty arthritis (n = 3), and no abnormality (n = 14, 13 %). The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of synovial biopsy was 99 %, 97 %, and 100 % for synovial tumour; 100 %, 100 %, and 100 % for native joint infection; and 78 %, 45 %, and 100 % for prosthetic joint infection. False-negative synovial biopsy did not seem to be related to antibiotic therapy. Ultrasound-guided Tru-cut synovial biopsy is a safe and reliable technique with a high diagnostic yield for diagnosing synovial tumour and also, most likely, for joint infection. Regarding joint infection, synovial biopsy of native joints seems to have a higher diagnostic yield than that for infected prosthetic joints. • Ultrasound-guided Tru-cut synovial biopsy has high accuracy (99 %) for diagnosing synovial tumour. • It has good accuracy, sensitivity, and high specificity for diagnosis of joint infection. • Synovial biopsy of native joints works better than biopsy of prosthetic joints. • A negative synovial biopsy culture from a native joint largely excludes septic arthritis. • Ultrasound-guided Tru-cut synovial biopsy is a safe and well-tolerated procedure.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of the Multi-disciplinary Orthopaedics Rehabilitation Empowerment (MORE) Program on reducing chronic disability among injured workers and improving efficiency of work rehabilitation process. METHODS:A cohort of patientswithworkplace injuries inthelower back were recruitedfrom orthopaedics clinicsand assigned to either MORE group (n = 139) or control group (n = 106). Patients in MORE group received an early MRI screening and a coordinated multi-disciplinary management, while patients in the control group received conventional care. Outcome variables are time to return-to-work (RTW) from date of injury, waiting time for MRI screening and time to medical assessment board (MAB). RESULTS: Patients in the MORE Program had significantly shorter duration for RTW (MORE: 6.1 months, Control: 12.8 months, p< 0.01), and more RTW cases (n = 64, 46.0%) compared to Control group (n = 29, 27.4%). The MORE group also had much shorter waiting time for MRI scans (91.85 vs. 309.2 days, p< 0.001) and MAB referral after MRI scans (97.2 vs. 178.9 days, p = 0.001) compared to Control group. CONCLUSIONS: The MORE Program which emphasizes early intervention and early MRI screening, is shown to be effective in shortening sick leave and improving RTW outcomes of injured workers.

The aim of this study was to investigate the direct muscle cell-mediated actions of androgens by comparing two different mouse lines. The cre-loxP system was used to delete the DNA-binding activity of the androgen receptor (AR) in mature myofibers (MCK mARΔZF2) in one model and the DNA-binding activity of the AR in both proliferating myoblasts and myofibers (α-actin mARΔZF2) in another model. We found that hind-limb muscle mass was normal in MCK mARΔZF2mice and that relative mass of only some hind-limb muscles was reduced in α-actin mARΔZF2mice. This suggests that myoblasts and myofibers are not the major cellular targets mediating the anabolic actions of androgens on male muscle during growth and development. Levator ani muscle mass was decreased in both mouse lines, demonstrating that there is a myofiber-specific effect in this unique androgen-dependent muscle. We found that the pattern of expression of genes includingc-myc,Fzd4andIgf2is associated with androgen-dependent changes in muscle mass; therefore, these genes are likely to be mediators of anabolic actions of androgens. Further research is required to identify the major targets of androgen actions in muscle, which are likely to include indirect actions via other tissues.

Electrospinning is a versatile fabrication technique that has been recently expanded to create nanofibrous structures that mimic ECM topography. Like many materials, electrospun constructs are typically characterized on a smaller scale, and scaled up for various applications. This established practice is based on the assumption that material properties, such as toughness, failure stress and strain, are intrinsic to the material, and thus will not be influenced by specimen geometry. However, we hypothesized that the material and failure properties of electrospun nanofiber mats vary with specimen thickness. To test this, we mechanically characterized polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofiber mats of three different thicknesses in response to constant rate elongation to failure. To identify if any observed thickness-dependence could be attributed to fiber alignment, such as the effects of fiber reorientation during elongation, these tests were performed in mats with either random or aligned nanofiber orientation. Contrary to our hypothesis, the failure strain was conserved across the different thicknesses, indicating similar maximal elongation for specimens of different thickness. However, in both the aligned and randomly oriented groups, the ultimate tensile stress, short-range modulus, yield modulus, and toughness all decreased with increasing mat thickness, thereby indicating that these are not intrinsic material properties. These findings have important implications in engineered scaffolds for fibrous and soft tissue applications (e.g., tendon, ligament, muscle, and skin), where such oversights could result in unwanted laxity or reduced resistance to failure. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
