PURPOSE Women who smoke and have a history of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or cervical cancer represent a vulnerable subgroup at elevated risk for recurrence, poorer cancer treatment outcomes, and decreased quality of life. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term efficacy of Motivation And Problem Solving (MAPS), a novel treatment well-suited to meeting the smoking cessation needs of this population. METHODS Women who were with a history of CIN or cervical cancer, age 18 years and older, spoke English or Spanish, and reported current smoking (≥100 lifetime cigarettes plus any smoking in the past 30 days) were eligible. Participants (N = 202) were recruited in clinic in Oklahoma City and online nationally and randomly assigned to (1) standard treatment (ST) or (2) MAPS. ST consisted of repeated referrals to a tobacco cessation quitline, self-help materials, and combination nicotine replacement therapy (patch plus lozenge). MAPS comprised all ST components plus up to six proactive telephone counseling sessions over 12 months. Logistic regression and generalized estimating equations evaluated the intervention. The primary outcome was self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence from tobacco at 18 months, with abstinence at 3, 6, and 12 months and biochemically confirmed abstinence as secondary outcomes. RESULTS There was no significant effect for MAPS over ST at 18 months (14.2% v 12.9%, P = .79). However, there was a significant condition × assessment interaction ( P = .015). Follow-up analyses found that MAPS ( v ST) abstinence rates were significantly greater at 12 months (26.4% v 11.9%, P = .017; estimated OR, 2.60; 95% CI, 1.19 to 5.89). CONCLUSION MAPS led to a greater than two-fold increase in smoking abstinence among survivors of CIN and cervical cancer at 12 months. At 18 months, abstinence in MAPS declined to match the control condition and the treatment effect was no longer significant.

The mitochondrion is a gatekeeper of apoptotic processes, and mediates drug resistance to several chemotherapy agents used to treat cancer. Neuroblastoma is a common solid cancer in young children with poor clinical outcomes following conventional chemotherapy. We sought druggable mitochondrial protein targets in neuroblastoma cells. Among mitochondria-associated gene targets, we found that high expression of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocase 2 (SLC25A5/ANT2), was a strong predictor of poor neuroblastoma patient prognosis and contributed to a more malignant phenotype in pre-clinical models. Inhibiting this transporter with PENAO reduced cell viability in a panel of neuroblastoma cell lines in a TP53-status-dependant manner. We identified the histone deacetylase inhibitor, suberanilohydroxamic acid (SAHA), as the most effective drug in clinical use against mutant TP53 neuroblastoma cells. SAHA and PENAO synergistically reduced cell viability, and induced apoptosis, in neuroblastoma cells independent of TP53-status. The SAHA and PENAO drug combination significantly delayed tumour progression in pre-clinical neuroblastoma mouse models, suggesting that these clinically advanced inhibitors may be effective in treating the disease.

Augmented reality (AR) is a rapidly developing technology that has substantial potential as a novel approach for addiction treatment, including tobacco use. AR can facilitate the delivery of cue exposure therapy (CET) such that individuals can experience the treatment in their natural environments as viewed via a smartphone screen, addressing the limited generalizbility of extinction learning. Previously, our team developed a basic AR app for smoking cessation and demonstrated the necessary mechanisms for CET. Specifically, we showed that the AR smoking cues, compared to neutral cues, elicited substantial cue reactivity (i.e. increased urge) and that repeated exposure to the AR smoking cues reduced urge (i.e. extinction) in a laboratory setting. Here we report the next step in the systematic development of the AR app, in which we assessed the usability and acceptability of the app among daily smokers in their natural environments.Daily smokers (Results indicated high usability and acceptability. Most of the participants (73.9%) used the AR app on at least 5 days. Participants found the AR cues realistic and well-integrated in their natural environments. The AR app was perceived as easy to use (Mean = 4.1/5) and learn (mean of 2 days to learn). Overall satisfaction with the app was also high. Secondary analyses found that 56.5% reported reduced smoking, with an average 26% reduction in cigarettes per day at follow-up.These findings set the stage for a randomized controlled trial testing the AR app as an adjuvant therapy for treating tobacco dependence, with potential applicability to other substances. KEY MESSAGEThis study found that the augmented reality (AR) smartphone application that utlized cue exposure treatment for smoking cessation was perceived as easy to use and learn in the natural, day-to-day environment of daily smokers. Findings set the stage for a larger clinical trial testing the AR app as an adjuvant therapy for treating tobacco dependence, with potential applicability to other addictive behaviors.

Patient navigation is increasingly common in cancer care. While navigation programs often involve informal family caregivers, few navigation interventions specifically target the family caregiver. We developed the eSNAP and Caregiver Navigator Intervention to help cancer family caregivers identify and capitalize on informal and formal social support resources. While the skill set for patient navigators may be adequate for supporting caregivers, other skills and areas of knowledge expertise are needed. In addition, sparse documentation of navigator training best practices creates further challenges for dissemination and implementation. Our goal is to describe the education and training of cancer caregiver navigators within key competencies used to prepare and support navigators to deliver our manualized intervention. Nationally recognized navigation competencies, related to developing a sensitivity to ethical, cultural, and professional issues, knowledge development, skills development, and practice-based learning, were identified and adapted. Performance goals were identified within each competency. Training activities were selected to support competency development. Based on adult learning theories, we emphasize multiple learning strategies, including experiential learning and critical reflection. Two caregiver navigators engaged in initial training between December, 2019 and February, 2020. Initial training was supervised by study leadership, who coordinated with experts and stakeholders. Navigators completed initial training. We describe lessons learned. To ensure that navigators are well-equipped to provide effective services, evidence-based training programs that include navigation and protocol-specific competencies are needed. Given the lack of detailed training programs in the literature, we created a flexible, multimodal learning approach that other teams may adopt.

To assess Hispanic participants' ratings of intervention materials and examine differences by language preference.Participants on a skin cancer prevention trial were randomized to receive generic (n = 457) or precision prevention materials conveying average (n = 195) or higher genetic risk (n = 268) based on MC1R genotype. Three months after receiving either English or Spanish language prevention materials, participants reported amount read, believability and clarity of materials, and intention to change preventive behavior.Participants reported high levels on all four outcomes, but the precision prevention groups noted lower clarity than the generic group (p = 3.2 ×10Skin cancer prevention materials were well-received by Hispanic participants. Higher scores among participants preferring Spanish may indicate acquiescence bias, or that translated prevention materials met their linguistic needs. Participants in the precision prevention groups with English language preference may have challenges in the uptake of genetic risk results.Availability of Spanish materials may have facilitated higher scores. Additional strategies should be explored to optimize participants' believability and clarity of precision prevention materials.

Previous studies have examined whether spiritual well-being is associated with cancer outcomes, but minority populations are under-represented. This study examines associations of baseline spiritual well-being and change in spiritual well-being with change in distress and quality of life, and explores potential factors associated with changes in spiritual well-being among Hispanic women undergoing chemotherapy.Participants completed measures examining spiritual well-being, distress, and quality of life prior to beginning chemotherapy and at weeks 7 and 13. Participants' acculturation and sociodemographic data were collected prior to treatment. Mixed models were used to examine the association of baseline spiritual well-being and change in spiritual well-being during treatment with change in distress and quality of life, and to explore whether sociodemographic factors, acculturation and clinical variables were associated with change in spiritual well-being.A total of 242 participants provided data. Greater baseline spiritual well-being was associated with less concurrent distress and better quality of life (p lt; 0.001), as well as with greater emotional and functional well-being over time (p values lt; 0.01). Increases in spiritual well-being were associated with improved social well-being during treatment, whereas decreases in spiritual well-being were associated with worsened social well-being (p lt; 0.01). Married participants reported greater spiritual well-being at baseline relative to non-married participants (p lt; 0.001).Greater spiritual well-being is associated with less concurrent distress and better quality of life, as well as with greater emotional, functional, and social well-being over time among Hispanic women undergoing chemotherapy. Future work could include developing culturally targeted spiritual interventions to improve survivors' well-being.

Breast cancer survivors frequently experience anxiety and depression post-treatment. Patient-provider communication and cultural values may impact these psychological outcomes. We examined the impact of patient-provider communication and cultural values on anxiety and depression among Black breast cancer survivors.Using an observational, cross-sectional design, 351 survivors self-reported patient-provider communication (quality, confidence), cultural values (religiosity, collectivism, future time orientation), anxiety, and depression. Patients were categorized into high, moderate, and low levels of communication and cultural values. Separate linear regressions examined the effect of levels of communication and cultural values on anxiety and depression, controlling for sociodemographic variables.A subset of breast cancer survivors reported clinically significant symptoms of anxiety (40%) and depression (20%). Communication was associated with anxiety (β = -0.14, p = 0.01) and depression (β = -0.10, p = 0.04). Specifically, women reporting higher levels of communication quality/confidence reported lower levels of anxiety and depression. There was a trend towards a significant association between cultural values and depression (β = -0.09, p = 0.06).Black breast cancer survivors experience poor psychological functioning. Effective patient-provider communication may reduce anxiety and depression post-treatment.Patient-provider relationships and patient empowerment may be key components of cancer survivorship. Special attention should be paid to patient-centered communication for Black breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND The prevalence of smoking remains high in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including the Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia. Smoking is especially hazardous for people with HIV (PWH). In Cambodia, approximately 43%–65% of male PWH and 3%–5% of female PWH smoke cigarettes. Thus, there is a critical need for cost-effective smoking cessation interventions for Cambodian PWH. This paper describes the design, methods, and data analysis plans for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) assessing the efficacy of a theory-based mobile health (mHealth) smoking cessation intervention in Cambodian PWH. OBJECTIVE This 2-group RCT compares the efficacy of an mHealth-based automated messaging (AM) intervention versus standard care (SC) in facilitating smoking cessation among Cambodian PWH. METHODS Cambodian PWH who currently smoke and are receiving antiretroviral treatment (target N = 800) will be randomized to (1) SC or (2) AM. SC participants will receive brief advice to quit smoking, written self-help materials, nicotine patches, and will complete weekly app-delivered dietary assessments for 26 weeks. AM participants will receive all SC components (but will complete smoking-related weekly assessments instead of dietary assessments), plus a fully-automated tailored messaging program driven by the weekly assessments to facilitate smoking cessation. In the Phase-Based Model of smoking cessation, the cessation process is partitioned into 4 phases: motivation, preparation (pre-cessation), cessation (quit date to 2 weeks post-quit), and maintenance (up to 6 months post-quit). Our AM program targets processes within these phases, including increasing motivation to quit, enhancing self-efficacy, obtaining social support, skills to cope with nicotine withdrawal symptoms and stress, and skills to maintain abstinence. All participants will complete baseline and 3-, 6-, and 12-month in-person follow-up assessments. The primary outcome is biochemically confirmed abstinence at 12 months, with 3- and 6-month abstinence as secondary outcomes. Potential mediators and moderators underlying treatment effects will be explored, and cost-effectiveness will be assessed. RESULTS This study was approved by all relevant domestic and international institutional and ethical review boards. Participant recruitment commenced in January 2023. Data collection is expected to conclude by the end of 2025. CONCLUSIONS By demonstrating the greater efficacy and cost-effectiveness of AM relative to SC, this study has the potential to transform HIV care in Cambodia and prevent tobacco-related diseases. Furthermore, it may be adapted for use in other Cambodian populations and in other LMICs. Ultimately, the AM approach to smoking cessation could greatly improve public health in the developing world and beyond. Supplementary Figure from Retention and Evaluation of Precision and Generic Prevention Materials for Melanoma: A Qualitative Study Comparing Young Adults and Adults

A randomized trial was conducted to examine whether providing precision prevention materials incorporating melanocortin-1 receptor genetic risk information would increase intention to practice melanoma preventive behaviors. Here, we determine retention/evaluation of prevention materials for adolescent and young adults (AYA) 18 to 39 years old versus adults aged 40+ at 6 and 12 months as an a priori adjunct analysis to the primary research question. Using qualitative methodology, open-ended questions probing most important information from prevention materials and additional comments were collected at 6 and 12 months after baseline. Descriptive statistics were performed on demographic/self-reported characteristics. Two independent researchers applied qualitative thematic content analysis to identify major themes in open-ended questions. Of the 1,134 participants randomized, 906 completed at least one of the follow-up surveys and contributed to analyses of intervention efficacy. Five major thematic categories emerged from the open-ended response data: (i) tips and tricks for sun protection; (ii) cancer prevention; (iii) risk factors and genetics; (iv) general information; and (v) intervention comments. Across all ages, the most important information retained were sun protection techniques in the generic prevention materials group and identifying the importance of genetic risk factors/implementing lifestyle behavior changes in the precision prevention materials group. For additional comments, AYA participants in the generic prevention materials group preferred more scientific information including statistics and citations for references while adults were more likely to state they already knew cancer prevention techniques. Results provide unique qualitative evaluation of AYA versus adult retention of prevention materials for melanoma that enhance quantitative findings. Prevention Relevance: It is important to evaluate information within groups defined by periods of the life trajectory, e.g., AYA and adults, to best inform preferences, knowledge, and motivation for behavior change. By assessing retention, evidence-based interventions can be designed to better support public health messaging and encourage positive health behaviors.

Introduction Hispanic/Latinx smokers in the United States are often treated as a homogeneous group. However, population-based studies suggest that cigarette use differs among Hispanic/Latinx subgroups by sociodemographic or sociocultural characteristics. This secondary analysis aimed to advance the limited literature by examining differences in smoking-related variables. Aims and Methods We used baseline data from a randomized controlled trial testing a self-help Spanish-language smoking cessation intervention. Puerto Rican (PR), Mexican, and Cuban, the three largest Hispanic/Latinx subgroups in the sample (N = 1028), were first compared on sociodemographic and sociocultural variables (acculturation and familism). Primary analyses assessed subgroup differences in cigarette use variables (eg, cigarettes per day [CPD], nicotine dependence [Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence], and daily smoking) and smoking-related cognitive constructs (motivation to quit, smoking outcome expectancies, and abstinence self-efficacy) controlling for sociodemographic and sociocultural variables. Additional analyses explored differences between men and women within subgroups. Results Mexicans exhibited the lowest levels of daily smoking (90% vs. 95% Cubans and 96% PR; p = .001), CPD (M = 13.5, SD = 9.5 vs. M = 20.1, SD = 9.9 Cubans and M = 16.7, SD = 10.1 PR; p = .016), and nicotine dependence (M = 4.2, SD = 2.3 vs. M = 6.0, SD = 2.1 Cubans and M = 5.7, SD = 2.2 PR; p < .001), with no differences between PRs and Cubans. Within-subgroup comparisons between men and women showed the most differences among PRs (eg, men were more nicotine dependent [M = 6.0, SD = 1.9] than women [M = 5.4, SD = 2.3; p = .041]) and Cubans (eg, men smoked more CPD [M = 22.2, SD = 12.2] than women [M = 19.3, SD = 12.0; p = .042]), and the fewest among Mexicans. Conclusions Findings support heterogeneity within Hispanic/Latinx smokers and highlight the potential utility of examining sociodemographic, sociocultural, and smoking characteristics important for developing salient cessation interventions. Implications Findings demonstrate that treatment-seeking Hispanic/Latinx smokers in the United States differ in sociodemographic, sociocultural, and smoking-related variables (cigarette use and smoking-related cognitive constructs) by subgroup (ie, PR, Mexican, and Cuban) and within subgroups by sex. These differences suggest that heterogeneity among subgroups should be considered when developing cessation interventions for Hispanics/Latinxs. Future research should examine how differences in sociodemographic and smoking-related variables impact intervention outcomes and explore the role of sociocultural factors (eg, acculturation and familism) as determinants of cessation.

BACKGROUND: Cultural background, language, and literacy are factors that may affect access, health care utilization, and cancer screening behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize health literacy among Spanish-preferring Hispanic/Latino individuals ages 50–75 and examine associations between sociodemographic characteristics, health beliefs, and health literacy. METHODS: Participants self-identified as Hispanic/Latino, preferring health information in Spanish, were ages 50–75, at average risk for colorectal cancer, not up to date with colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, and enrolled in a CRC screening education intervention trial. Sociodemographic characteristics, health beliefs, and health literacy (i.e., difficulty understanding written health information and confidence completing health forms) were assessed at baseline. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: Fifty-three percent of participants reported either sometimes having difficulty or always having difficulty with written health information, and 25% reported always asking for help or being not so confident in completing health forms. Univariate predictors of adequate health literacy for written health information were lower cancer worry and lower religious beliefs. Higher educational attainment predicted confidence in completing health forms. CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the need for interventions that address health beliefs and health literacy among Hispanic/Latino patients who have low confidence in completing written forms and difficulty understanding written information and reinforce the use of plain language and salient design features when developing patient education materials.

Cue-exposure therapy (CET) aims to extinguish conditioned cue reactivity (CR) to aid in smoking cessation. A key disadvantage of extant CET is its limited ability to generalize extinction to the real world. Our team developed a set of augmented reality smoking-related and neutral cues that can appear in real-time in smokers' natural environments as viewed through a smartphone screen. Prior to deployment as a clinical tool, the present study tested the ability of AR smoking cues to extinguish CR in a controlled laboratory study with an AR smartphone application developed for this project. We hypothesized that daily smokers who completed a single session of cue exposure with AR smoking cues (extinction condition) would demonstrate lower cue-provoked urge to smoke at posttest compared to those who viewed AR neutral cues (control condition).Daily smokers (As hypothesized, we found a Time × Condition interaction indicating that posttest urge ratings were lower in the extinction condition than in the control condition (These laboratory findings provide evidence supporting the potential clinical efficacy of AR cues for cue-exposure trials, setting the stage for testing in smokers' naturalistic environments. We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant Δ(1232) baryon production followed by Δ radiative decay, with a ⟨0.8⟩ GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE’s first three years of operations (6.80×1020 protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state (1γ1p and 1γ0p, respectively). The background is constrained via an in situ high-purity measurement of NC π0 events, made possible via dedicated 2γ1p and 2γ0p selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the 1γ1p and 1γ0p selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of 20.5±3.65(syst) and 145.1±13.8(syst) events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC Δ radiative decay of less than 2.3 times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (C.L.). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of 3.18 times the nominal NC Δ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% C.L., in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than 50-fold improvement over the world’s best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range.

We present a measurement of νe interactions from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to address the nature of the excess of low energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE Collaboration. Objectives Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience cancer-related health disparities and reduced quality of cancer care compared to the general population in part due to a lack of knowledgeable providers. This study explored oncologists’ experiences and perspectives in providing patient-centered care for SGM individuals with cancer. Methods We conducted a qualitative analysis of oncologists’ responses to four open-ended items on a national survey eliciting their experiences, reservations, and suggestions in treating SGM patients. Results Over 50 % of the 149 respondents of the national survey responded to at least one open-ended item. Many oncologists reported positive experiences reflecting personal growth and affirmative care practices, such as open, non-judgmental communication, compassion, competence, and supporting patients’ identity. There was a notable lack of experience with transgender patients in particular. Lack of knowledge, interpersonal communication concerns (e.g., fear of offending patients), and microaggressions (“don’t ask, don’t tell”) were identified as barriers to providing affirming care. Conclusions Oncologists recognize their knowledge deficits and need strategies to overcome communication barriers and microaggressions among the cancer care team to provide SGM-affirming care. Practice implications Curricula are needed to train oncologists in SGM healthcare needs and affirming communication skills to facilitate patient-centered care for SGM individuals with cancer.

Skin cancer incidence is increasing among US Hispanics, who experience higher morbidity and mortality and are underserved in precision medicine. A large proportion of Hispanics carry risk variants at MC1R, a robust genetic locus for skin cancer susceptibility. Recall is a fundamental psychological mechanism underlying how people receive health recommendations: better recall has been associated with greater adherence and improved outcomes. However, research on recall of genetic testing information for low to moderate penetrance genes, what predicts recall, and the influence of recall on preventive behavior is limited, especially among Hispanics. We report results of secondary analyses from our previously published randomized controlled trial among self-identified Hispanic participants from Tampa, Florida and Ponce, Puerto Rico. Participants randomized to the precision prevention arm (n=282) were provided MC1R risk information (average or higher) and were asked to recall their genetic risk after 3 and 9 months. Predictors of recall (correct recall, did not recall, or misremembered) at each timepoint were determined by backwards stepwise selection that optimizes AIC, which maximizes overall model fit notwithstanding individual variable p-values. Using all trial participants (n=920), intervention effects on 11 primary and secondary preventive behaviors collected at baseline and post-intervention were estimated within strata of 3-month recall. At 9 months post-intervention, there was a borderline difference in risk recall comparing average- and higher-risk participants (p=0.051), with higher-risk participants 3 times less likely to correctly recall their MC1R risk category (vs. misremember, OR=0.31, 95%CI:0.10-0.95) than average-risk participants. Among average-risk participants, common predictors of correct recall across the 3- and 9-month final models were younger age (OR3=0.97, 95%CI:0.94-1.01, OR9=0.96, 95%CI:0.93-0.99) and higher education (OR3=1.64, 95%CI:1.06-2.63, OR9=1.73, 95%CI:1.12-2.81). Among higher-risk participants, higher education was associated with correct recall at both timepoints (OR3=1.30, 95%CI:0.93-1.85, OR9=1.66, 95%CI:1.21-2.32). Reassessment of intervention effects showed no pattern of improved or worsened preventive behavior by 3-month recall among average-risk participants. However, higher-risk participants who correctly recalled at 3 months had greater odds of wearing sunscreen often or always (OR=1.97, p=0.04) and odds of undergoing a professional skin exam (OR=8.89; p=0.001) than those who did not recall or misremembered (OR=1.32, p=0.45, OR=6.36, p=0.007, respectively). Our results suggest the need for additional strategies, such as reinforcement, for Hispanics with lower education to boost recall, which may consequently improve adoption of preventive behaviors. One of the largest disparities in cancer mortality in the United States occurs with colorectal cancer (CRC). The objectives of this multilevel two-arm intervention trial were to compare the efficacy of two interventions to promote CRC screening (CRCS) with fecal immunochemical test (FIT) and examine sociodemographic and psychosocial predictors of FIT screening. Individuals ages 50-75 (n = 326) who were not up-to-date with CRCS, could understand English or Spanish, and were at average CRC risk were recruited from two federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in Florida. Prior to intervention, CRCS rates in the FQHCs were 27.1% and 32.9%, respectively. Study enrollment occurred April 2018-November 2019. System-level intervention components included leveraging electronic medical record (EMR) systems and delivering patient reminders. Participants were randomized to C-CARES (education+FIT) or C-CARES Plus (C-CARES+personalized coaching [for those not completing FIT within 90 days]). Primary outcome was completed FIT returned1 year. Primary outcome analyses were performed using logistic regression. 225 participants completed FIT (69.0% [95% CI: 64.0-74.0%]), with no significant difference in FIT uptake by intervention arm (67.3% C-CARES Plus vs. 70.8% C-CARES; p = .49). FIT uptake was significantly higher among patients who received intervention materials in Spanish (77.2%) compared to those who received materials in English (63.2%, p .01). The personalized coaching in the C-CARES Plus arm did not appear to provide added benefit beyond the C-CARES intervention. Multilevel approaches that include EMR prompts, reminders, FIT access, and provision of low-literacy, language-concordant education can support efforts to improved community clinics' CRCS rates. Future efforts should focus on repeat FIT screening. Trial registration: The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03906110).

Smoking cessation treatments that are easily accessible and deliver intervention content at vulnerable moments (e.g., high negative affect) have great potential to impact tobacco abstinence. The current study examined the feasibility and acceptability of a multi-component Just-In-Time Adaptive Intervention (JITAI) for smoking cessation. Daily smokers interested in quitting were consented to participate in a 6-week cessation study. Visit 1 occurred 4 days pre-quit, Visit 2 was on the quit day, Visit 3 occurred 3 days post-quit, Visit 4 was 10 days post-quit, and Visit 5 was 28 days post-quit. During the first 2 weeks (Visits 1-4), the JITAI delivered brief mindfulness/motivational strategies via smartphone in real-time based on negative affect or smoking behavior detected by wearable sensors. Participants also attended 5 in-person visits, where brief cessation counseling (Visits 1-4) and nicotine replacement therapy (Visits 2-5) were provided.
