Abstract: Abstract We report a determination of the CKM angle ϕ 3, also known as γ, from a combination of measurements using samples of up to 711 fb −1 from the Belle experiment and up to 362 fb −1 from the Belle II experiment. We combine results from analyses of B + → DK +, B + → Dπ +, and B + → D * K + decays, where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ mesons, in a likelihood fit to obtain ϕ 3 = (75.2 ± 7.6) ° . We also briefly discuss the interpretation of this result.

Abstract: Abstract We report measurements of the e + e − → B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ , B B ¯ ∗ $$ B{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ , and B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross sections at four energies, 10653, 10701, 10746 and 10805 MeV, using data collected by the Belle II experiment. We reconstruct one B meson in a large number of hadronic final states and use its momentum to identify the production process. In the first 2 – 5 MeV above B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ threshold, the e + e − → B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross section increases rapidly. This may indicate the presence of a pole close to the threshold.

Abstract: Abstract We present a study of Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0 $$ , Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta $$ , and Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime } $$ decays using the Belle and Belle II data samples, which have integrated luminosities of 980 fb −1 and 426 fb −1, respectively. We measure the following relative branching fractions B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.48 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.03 syst , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.11 ± 0.01 stat ± 0.01 syst , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.08 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.01 syst $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.48\pm 0.02\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.03\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta \right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.11\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.08\pm 0.02\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\end{array}} $$ for the first time, where the uncertainties are statistical (stat) and systematic (syst). By multiplying by the branching fraction of the normalization mode, B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ , we obtain the following absolute branching fraction results B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 = 6.9 ± 0.3 stat ± 0.5 syst ± 1.3 norm × 10 − 3 , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η = 1.6 ± 0.2 stat ± 0.2 syst ± 0.3 norm × 10 − 3 , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ = 1.2 ± 0.3 stat ± 0.1 syst ± 0.2 norm × 10 − 3 , $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)=\left(6.9\pm 0.3\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.5\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.3\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta \right)=\left(1.6\pm 0.2\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.2\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.3\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\varXi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime}\right)=\left(1.2\pm 0.3\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.1\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.2\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\end{array}} $$ where the third uncertainties are from B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ . The asymmetry parameter for Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0 $$ is measured to be α Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 = − 0.90 ± 0.15 stat ± 0.23 syst $$ \alpha \left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)=-0.90\pm 0.15\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.23\left(\textrm{syst}\right) $$ .

6. Outdoor Environmental Radiation Monitoring and Estimation of Radiation Risk on Public in New Market Thana, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Abstract: The Real-time outdoor environmental gamma radiation (RTOEGR) dose rates were monitored at New Market Thana in Dhaka city to generate a baseline database that would help to know any deviation after operation of Rooppur NPP. The RTOEGR monitoring was carried out using a digital portable radiation monitoring device (DPRMD). The RTOEGR dose rates at the area of New Market Thana were ranged from 0.103 ± 0.004 µSv/h to 0.168 ± 0.007 µSv/h with an average of 0.135 ± 0.004 µSv/h. The public's annual effective doses were calculated based on RTOEGR dose rates, and those were varied from 0.181 ± 0.007 mSv to 0.295 ± 0.007 mSv with an average of 0.238 ± 0.007 mSv. Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) on public health was estimated based on the annual effective dose. The Public's ELCR were from 0.720×10-3 to 1.174×10-3 with an average of 0.892×10-3, which is higher than the worldwide standard value of 0.29×10-3. The mean RTOEGR dose rate of the New Market Thana in Dhaka city is comparable to that of Sabzevar city (Iran), Kathmandu city of Tribhuvan University (Nepal), Baghdad city (Iraq), Kirikkale city (Turkey).

Abstract: Abstract We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay τ − → μ − μ + μ − using a 424 fb −1 sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The selection of e + e − → τ + τ − events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.9 × 10 −8 on the branching fraction of the τ − → μ − μ + μ − decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.

Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the ratio R μ = B τ − → μ − ν ¯ μ ν τ / B τ − → e − ν ¯ e ν τ $$ {R}_{\mu }=\mathcal{B}\left({\tau}^{-}\to {\mu}^{-}{\overline{\nu}}_{\mu }{\nu}_{\tau}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\tau}^{-}\to {e}^{-}{\overline{\nu}}_e{\nu}_{\tau}\right) $$ of branching fractions B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ of the τ lepton decaying to muons or electrons using data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The sample has an integrated luminosity of 362 ± 2 fb −1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Using an optimised event selection, a binned maximum likelihood fit is performed using the momentum spectra of the electron and muon candidates. The result, R μ = 0.9675 ± 0.0007 ± 0.0036, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is the most precise to date. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the W boson in τ decays of 0.9974 ± 0.0019, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity.

Abstract: Abstract We present an analysis of the process e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) (where n = 1, 2, or 3) reconstructed in 19.6 fb −1 of Belle II data during a special run of the SuperKEKB collider at four energy points near the peak of the Υ(10753) resonance. By analyzing the mass distribution of the π + π − Υ(nS) system and the Born cross sections of the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process, we report the first observation of Υ(10753) decays to the π + π − Υ(1S) and π + π − Υ(2S) final states, and find no evidence for decays to π + π − Υ(3S). Possible intermediate states in the π + π − Υ(1S, 2S) transitions are also investigated, and no evidence for decays proceeding via the π ∓ Z b ± $$ {\pi}^{\mp }{Z}_b^{\pm } $$ or f 0(980)Υ(nS) intermediate states is found. We measure Born cross sections for the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process that, combined with results from Belle, obtain the mass and width of Υ(10753) to be (10756.6 ± 2.7 ± 0.9) MeV/c 2 and (29.0 ± 8.8 ± 1.2) MeV, respectively. The relative ratios of the Born cross sections at the Υ(10753) resonance peak are also reported for the first time.

Abstract: Abstract We report results from a study of B ± → DK ± decays followed by D decaying to the CP-even final state K + K − and CP-odd final state K S 0 π 0 $$ {K}_S^0{\pi}^0 $$ , where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ states. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle ϕ 3. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of 198 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure the CP asymmetries to be A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ = (+12.5 ± 5.8 ± 1.4)% and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− = (−16.7 ± 5.7 ± 0.6)%, and the ratios of branching fractions to be R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP+ = 1.164 ± 0.081 ± 0.036 and R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP− = 1.151 ± 0.074 ± 0.019. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5 standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3% confidence intervals of (8.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 16.5 ° ) or (84.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 95.5 ° ) or (163.3 ° < ϕ 3 < 171.5 ° ) and 0.321 < r B < 0.465.

11. Laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with micrometer spatial resolution and detection of three-dimensional spin vector

Abstract: Abstract We have developed a state-of-the-art apparatus for laser-based spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with micrometer spatial resolution (µ-SARPES). This equipment is realized by the combination of a high-resolution photoelectron spectrometer, a 6 eV laser with high photon flux that is focused down to a few micrometers, a high-precision sample stage control system, and a double very-low-energy-electron-diffraction spin detector. The setup achieves an energy resolution of 1.5 (5.5) meV without (with) the spin detection mode, compatible with a spatial resolution better than 10 µm. This enables us to probe both spatially-resolved electronic structures and vector information of spin polarization in three dimensions. 12. Vitamin D Profile in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Patients in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Bangladesh

Abstract: There are multi-factorial causes of decrease in bone mass in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) patients who correlate with the duration of active disease. By measuring the vitamin D level we can assess the deficiency or insufficiency earlier and can predict the risk of osteoporotic bone fracturecan give appropriate supplementation of vitamin Dcalcium. This study was done to determine the status of serum 25(OH)D in patients with JIA and to see the relationship among various subtypes and disease duration. In this cross sectional study 30 (Thirty) newly diagnosed cases of JIA attending the pediatric rheumatology clinic of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 2014 to December 2015 were included. Thirty age and sex matched control were selected and serum 25(OH)D was measured in cases and controls. Among JIA patients, 60% and among controls 33% had hypo-vitaminosis D. In JIA group the mean level of serum 25(OH)D was lower than control group and the result is statistically significant in cases of poly-articular JIA and systemic JIA (SJIA). There is significant difference of the mean values of vitamin D levels in JIA and control groups for the cases of hypo-vitaminosis D. Level of serum 25(OH)D significantly decreased as disease duration continue increased. More than half of JIA patients had hypo-vitaminosis D. It is more significant in cases of poly-articular JIA and systemic JIA (SJIA). There was negative relationship between serum 25(OH)D level and disease duration.

Abstract: Lactobacillus-fermented milk can stimulate anabolic effects in skeletal muscle. Fermented milk containing Lactobacillus produces aqueous molecules, such as free AA and lactate. This study aimed to investigate how processing fermented milk by centrifugation and removal of supernatant affects AA absorption and postprandial skeletal muscle protein synthesis (MPS) when mice are fed fermented milk. We gavaged male Sprague-Dawley rats with skim milk (S), fermented milk (F), or processed fermented milk (P), and examined the total AA content in portal vein blood (reflecting AA absorption) and plantaris muscle MPS at 30, 60, and 90 min following administration. Relative to fasted rats, at 30 min the total AA concentration in portal vein blood from rats in the P groups was significantly higher, followed by F and S, respectively. The MPS rates were higher for the F or P groups compared with the S group. Phosphorylation levels of p70S6 kinase in the P and F groups were significantly higher than those for the S group 30 min after administration, although the level of Akt phosphorylation was similar among the groups. These results suggested that fermentation improves AA absorption that in turn enhances postprandial MPS via Akt-independent mechanisms, and that processed fermented milk retains these favorable effects on MPS.

Abstract: Abstract We measure CP asymmetries and branching-fraction ratios for B ± → DK ± and Dπ ± decays with D → K S 0 $$ {K}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ K ± π ∓, where D is a superposition of D 0 and D ¯ $$ \overline{D} $$ 0. We use the full data set of the Belle experiment, containing 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs, and data from the Belle II experiment, containing 387 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs, both collected in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. Our results provide model-independent information on the unitarity triangle angle ϕ 3.

17. Ultrafast electron dynamics in a topological surface state observed in two-dimensional momentum space

Abstract: Abstract We study ultrafast population dynamics in the topological surface state of Sb $$_2$$ 2 Te $$_3$$ 3 in two-dimensional momentum space with time- and angle-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. Linearly polarized mid-infrared pump pulses are used to permit a direct optical excitation across the Dirac point. We show that this resonant excitation is strongly enhanced within the Dirac cone along three of the six $${\bar{\Gamma }}$$ Γ ¯ – $${\bar{M}}$$ M ¯ directions and results in a macroscopic photocurrent when the plane of incidence is aligned along a $${\bar{\Gamma }}$$ Γ ¯ – $${\bar{K}}$$ K ¯ direction. Our experimental approach makes it possible to disentangle the decay of transiently excited population and photocurent by elastic and inelastic electron scattering within the full Dirac cone in unprecedented detail. This is utilized to show that doping of Sb $$_2$$ 2 Te $$_3$$ 3 by vanadium atoms strongly enhances inelastic electron scattering to lower energies, but only scarcely affects elastic scattering around the Dirac cone.

Abstract: Abstract We report the measurement of the two-photon decay width of χ c2(1P) in two-photon processes at the Belle experiment. We analyze the process γγ → χ c2(1P) → J/ψγ, J/ψ → ℓ + ℓ − (ℓ = e or μ) using a data sample of 971 fb −1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − collider. In this analysis, the product of the two-photon decay width of χ c2(1P) and the branching fraction is determined to be Γ γγ χ c 2 1 P B χ c 2 1 P → J / ψγ B J / ψ → ℓ + ℓ − = 14.8 ± 0.3 stat . ± 0.7 syst . $$ {\Gamma}_{\gamma \gamma}\left({\chi}_{c2}(1P)\right)\mathcal{B}\left({\chi}_{c2}(1P)\to J/\psi \gamma \right)\mathcal{B}\left(J/\psi \to {\ell}^{+}{\ell}^{-}\right)=14.8\pm 0.3\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)\pm 0.7\left(\textrm{syst}.\right) $$ eV, which corresponds to Γ γγ (χ c2(1P)) = 653 ± 13(stat.) ± 31(syst.) ± 17(B.R.) eV, where the third uncertainty is from B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (χ c2(1P) → J/ψγ) and B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (J/ψ → ℓ + ℓ − ).

Abstract: The purposes of this study were to demonstrate the transition of heart rate variability (HRV) during trials in the field and to examine the relationship between peak frequency of high-frequency band (HF) and stride frequency. Ten healthy long-distance college female runners (age 19-21 years) performed a 3000 m realistic time trial. The time-series power spectrum analysis by maximum entropy method was used to evaluate cardiac autonomic nervous activity during the race. Cross-correlation coefficients were calculated to estimate the degree of linear co-ordination between the central peak frequency of HF and stride frequency. Just after starting, the decrease in HF (0.15-1.00 Hz) and a transient increase of low-frequency band (LF)/HF were found. After that, the HF remained at a low level and LF/HF decreased sharply. These findings suggested that the parasympathetic activity was suppressed and sympathetic activity increased just after starting, and the sympathetic activity reached the saturated level according to continuation of high-intensity exercise. In spite of the significant decrease of HRV during trials, peak frequency of HF could be differentiated clearly. The cross-correlation coefficient of peak frequency of HF and stride frequency was from 0.703 to 0.868. This finding indicated that exercise rhythm reflected HRV during high-intensity running in the field.

Abstract: Abstract We report a measurement of the electric dipole moment of the τ lepton (dτ) using an 833 fb −1 data sample collected near the Υ(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. Using an optimal observable method, we obtain the real and imaginary parts of d τ as Re(d τ ) = (−0.62 ± 0.63) × 10 −17 ecm and Im(d τ ) = (−0.40 ± 0.32) × 10 −17 ecm, respectively. These results are consistent with null electric dipole moment at the present level of experimental sensitivity and improve the sensitivity by about a factor of three.

Abstract: Loss of E-cadherin (E-cad) triggers invasion, metastasis, and dedifferentiation in various epithelial carcinomas. Recently, it has been reported that two transcription factors, Snail and SIP1 (Smad interacting protein 1), directly repress transcription of the E-cad gene by binding E-box on E-cad promoter. Our aim is to solve the molecular mechanism of Snail and SIP1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We first showed an inverse correlation between E-cad and Snail/SIP 1 expression among five HCC lines with different phenotypes. The result indicated that undifferentiated, but not differentiated type expressed Snail/SIP1. Then, we established transfectants stably expressing Snail and SIP1 in two differentiated cells with E-cad expression. Suppressed expression of E-cad, morphologic change into fibroblastoid feature, and remarkable acceleration of invasion activity were observed in the transfectants. In reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction series of genes relating to motility and invasion, we demonstrated striking evidence that matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-1), MMP-2, MMP-7, and MT1-MMP expressions were strongly upregulated by Snail. On the other hand, MMP-1, MMP-2, and MT1-MMP expressions were enhanced by SIP1 transfection, however, the intensity was weaker than that in Snail transfection. In conclusion, Snail or SIP1 expression may be induced during HCC progression, where Snail/SIP1 directly represses E-cad gene transcription and activates cancer invasion via the upregulation of the MMP gene family.

Abstract: Abstract We present the first measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decay Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+} $$ → pη′ with η′ → ηπ + π − , using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 981 fb −1, collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − asymmetric-energy collider. A significant Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+} $$ → pη′ signal is observed for the first time with a signal significance of 5.4σ. The relative branching fraction with respect to the normalization mode Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+} $$ → pK − π + is measured to be B Λ c + → pη ′ B Λ c + → pK − π + = 7.54 ± 1.32 ± 0.73 × 10 − 3 , $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p\eta^{\prime}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {pK}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)}=\left(7.54\pm 1.32\pm 0.73\right)\times {10}^{-3}, $$ where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Using the world-average value of B Λ c + → pK − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {pK}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ = (6.28 ± 0.32) × 10 −2, we obtain B Λ c + → pη ′ = 4.73 ± 0.82 ± 0.46 ± 0.24 × 10 − 4 , $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p\eta^{\prime}\right)=\left(4.73\pm 0.82\pm 0.46\pm 0.24\right)\times {10}^{-4}, $$ where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from B Λ c + → pK − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {pK}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ , respectively.

Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle angle ϕ 3 (also known as γ) using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of B + → D ( K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ h + h − )h +, where D is either a D 0 or D ¯ $$ \overline{D} $$ 0 meson and h is either a π or K. This is the first measurement that simultaneously uses Belle and Belle II data, combining samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 711 fb −1 and 128 fb −1, respectively. All data were accumulated from energy-asymmetric e + e − collisions at a centre-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure ϕ 3 = (78.4 ± 11.4 ± 0.5 ± 1.0)°, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is from the uncertainties on external measurements of the D-decay strong-phase parameters.

Abstract: This study aims at development of pneumatic soft devices for stomach X-ray examination. Generally stomach X-ray examination can be divided two procedures roughly. One is observation of condition of back-side stomach wall and the other is that of front-side stomach wall. In this paper, two types of soft devices for each examination have been developed. The devices are configured with pneumatic actuators which are radiolucent and soft, and realize compression of the abdomen. Volunteer tests were conducted using actual X-ray apparatus and these devices. The results indicate the potential of the devices to improve the conventional stomach X-ray examination.

Abstract: In the excited state of the peptide-bridged Ru(II)/Os(II) binuclear complex, [L 2 Ru(II)mbCO- l -Leu-NHbpyOs(II)(bpy) 2 ] and [L 2 Ru(II)mbCO- l -Pro-NHbpy-Os(II)(bpy) 2 ] [L=bpy (=2,2′-bipyridine) or BTFMB (=4,4′-bis-trifluoromethyl-2,2′-bipyridine), and mb=4-methyl-bpy], a nearly complete quenching of Ru II →π* (Ligand) MLCT emission was observed at room temperature. Lifetime measurements were performed to evaluate the quenching rate and the mechanism on a quantitative basis. In complexes with L=bpy, the intramolecular energy transfer process had a unitary efficiency. In complexes with L=BTFMB, the evidence for the occurrence of competitive energy and electron-transfer processes was provided from the time dependence of the emission spectra. The main pathway for energy-transfer in both systems could be explained by the Forster mechanism. It was suggested that the direction of MLCT excitation to either bridging or non-bridging bpy-ligand causes the large difference of dipole–dipole distance.

Abstract: The seed storage protein [beta]-phaseolin of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was expressed in the endosperm of transgenic rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants. The 5.1- or 1.8-kb promoter fragment of the rice seed storage protein glutelin Gt1 gene was fused transcriptionally to either the genomic or cDNA coding sequence of the [beta]-phaseolin gene. The highest quantity of phaseolin estimated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was 4.0% of the total endosperm protein in the transgenic rice seeds. The phaseolin trait was segregated as a single dominant trait with a positive gene dosage effect and was stably inherited through three successive generations. Both phaseolin genomic and cDNA coding sequences were used to synthesize four isoforms of mature phaseolin protein with apparent molecular masses of 51, 48, 47, and 45 kD. Enzyme deglycosylation experiments indicated that the 51-kD form contains high-mannose N-glycans; the 48- and 47-kD forms have further modified N-glycans; and the 45-kD form is a nonglycosylated protein. Immunolabeling studies using light and electron microscopy demonstrated that phaseolin accumulates primarily in the vacuolar type-II protein bodies located at the periphery of the endosperm near the aleurone layer. We discuss the implications of these results on nutritional improvement of rice grains.

Abstract: The present paper describes the results obtained in a new system for hydroxide ion coupled transport of cyanide ion (uphill transport). The uphill transport was observed in two liquid membranes containing a tetraphenylporphinatomanganese(III) complex carrier (Mn(III)TPP). One is a bulk liquid membrane (BLM) that consists of a dichloromethane solution. The other is a polymer-supported liquid membrane (SLM) that was prepared by submerging a thin microporous polypropylene film in an o-nitrophenyl n-octyl ether solution. The OH ligand of the complex Mn(III)TPP (OH) is easily substituted with cyanide ion. The equilibrium constant of the reaction with cyanide ion is much larger than those with halide ions, CH3COO−, and NO−3. Only cyanide ion was transported selectively in the presence of various anions (CN−, Cl−, F−, NO−3, CH3COO−, etc.). We applied simple models to the uphill transport. In the BLM system, the flux of cyanide ion is governed by the diffusion processes of cyanide ion and the carrier molecule in the stagnant layers. The thicknesses of the layers and the ligand substitution reaction rate constants were estimated. In the SLM system, the flux of cyanide ion is controlled by the diffusion process of the carrier molecule obeying the Stokes—Einstein model in the membrane phase.

Abstract: We present male monozygotic twins who showed quite different clinical features. Blood chromosome analysis revealed 46, XY/46, XY, de1(7) (q32 qter) mosaicism in both twins. However, cultured skin fibroblasts from the twins showed different karyotypes. Twin 1, with a normal phenotype, had normal chromosomes and was 46,XY. Twin 2, on the other hand, had the characteristic manifestations of 7q — syndrome and chromosomes of 46, XY, del(7) (q32 qter). DNA fingerprint analysis of their peripheral blood samples revealed the same pattern. However, DNA fingerprint patterns of cultured skin fibroblasts and buccal mucosal cells were different when a 7q terminal marker, probe 83, was used. These identical twins with discordant phenotypes can be explained by the occurrence of twinning and simultaneous erroneous mitosis. In addition, there might be a vascular communication which probably resulted in blood exchange and chromosomal mosaicism of the lymphocytes of the monozygotic twins.

Abstract: The groundwater pollution by volatile organochlorines has been increasingly becoming a major environmental issue in many developed nations. In particular, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene were widely detected in regional groundwaters of Japan. The paper describes the characteristics of groundwater pollution of Japan on the basis of the nationwide survey results, and introduces an incident in industrial site and subsequent counter-measures. In this site detailed investigations of 26 monitoring wells surrounding the pollutant source have continued to date since remedial operation in 1984, and cis-l,2-dichloroethylene was discovered to be created as intermediate product from trichloroethylene during the biodegradation process. Furthermore, the long-term continuous surveys reveal two types of organochlorine behavior in ground-water, that is, (l)cis-l,2-dichloroethylene concentration is proportional to that of trichloroethylene and (2)cis-l,2-dichloroethylene concentration is nearly constant in no relation with trichloroethylene behavior, in seasonal variation of individual well-water.

Abstract: Abstract We present a search for the dark photon A′ in the B 0 → A′A′ decays, where A′ subsequently decays to e + e − , μ + μ − , and π + π − . The search is performed by analyzing 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ events collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − energy-asymmetric collider at the ϒ(4S) resonance. No signal is found in the dark photon mass range 0.01 GeV/c 2 ≤ m A′ ≤ 2.62 GeV/c 2, and we set upper limits of the branching fraction of B 0 → A′A′ at the 90% confidence level. The products of branching fractions, ℬ B 0 → A ′ A ′ × ℬ A ′ → e + e − 2 $$ \mathrm{\mathcal{B}}\left({B}^0\to A^{\prime }A^{\prime}\right)\times \mathrm{\mathcal{B}}{\left(A\prime \to {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\right)}^2 $$ and ℬ B 0 → A ′ A ′ × ℬ A ′ → μ + μ − 2 $$ \mathrm{\mathcal{B}}\left({B}^0\to A^{\prime }A^{\prime}\right)\times \mathrm{\mathcal{B}}{\left(A\prime \to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)}^2 $$ , have limits of the order of 10 −8 depending on the A′ mass. Furthermore, considering A′ decay rate to each pair of charged particles, the upper limits of ℬ B 0 → A ′ A ′ $$ \mathrm{\mathcal{B}}\left({B}^0\to A^{\prime }A^{\prime}\right) $$ are of the order of 10 −8–10 −5. From the upper limits of ℬ B 0 → A ′ A ′ $$ \mathrm{\mathcal{B}}\left({B}^0\to A^{\prime }A^{\prime}\right) $$ , we obtain the Higgs portal coupling for each assumed dark photon and dark Higgs mass. The Higgs portal couplings are of the order of 10 −2–10 −1 at m h ′ ≃ m B 0 $$ {m}_{h\prime}\simeq {m}_{B^0} $$ ± 40 MeV/c 2 and 10 −1–1 at m h ′ ≃ m B 0 $$ {m}_{h\prime}\simeq {m}_{B^0} $$ ± 3 GeV/c 2.

Abstract: 1. This study was undertaken to determine which alpha1-adrenoceptor (AR) subtypes were involved in the activation of the femoral artery and the aorta by norepinephrine (NE) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). 2. Negative log EC50 values and maximum responses of NE-induced contraction of the SHR femoral artery were unchanged and increased, respectively, compared with those of Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. 3. Contractile responses of the SHR aortas to NE were similar to those of the normotensive tissues. 4. Schild plot data for alpha1-AR antagonists indicated that alpha1-AR in the aorta were predominantly alpha1H subtype. In the femoral artery, because Schild plots for bunazosin had slopes of less than 1.0, there were alpha1H (or alpha1C) and alpha1L subtypes. 5. The alpha1-AR subtype in the aorta was essentially identical to the alpha1H subtype in the femoral artery. alpha1-AR subtypes mediating contraction in the SHR blood vessels were identical to those in the WKY tissues.

Abstract: We try to thin the thickness of a λ/4 electromagnetic(EM) wave absorber with inserting a frequency selective surface (FSS) into the spacer in order to control the phase in the spacer. For this reason, we focus on the impedance characteristics of the FSS. Furthermore, we design and fabricate the λ/4 wave absorber using the FSS and measure its absorption characteristics. The result shows that the absorber with the spacer of half thickness of the general absorber is obtained. We have also provided the useful data of the frequency and oblique characteristics of the proposed absorber.

Abstract: Bidirectional muographic measurements were conducted at the Imashirozuka burial mound, Japan. The mound was built in the beginning of the 6th century as a megalithic tomb and later collapsed after a landslide caused by the 1596 Fushimi earthquake, one of the largest earthquakes that has occurred in Japan over the last few centuries. The measurements were conducted in order to find evidence of this past disaster recorded in this historical heritage site. As a result, the vertical low-density regions were found at the top of the mound. These regions were interpreted as large-scale vertical cracks that caused the translational collapse process behind the rotational landslide that was already found in prior trench-survey-based works. These results indicate that there was an intrinsic problem with the stability of the basic foundation of the Imashirozuka mound before the 1596 Fushimi earthquake.

Abstract: Abstract The first dedicated search for the η c2(1D) is carried out using the decays B + → η c2(1D)K +, B 0 → η c2(1D) K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ , B 0 → η c2(1D)π − K +, and B + → η c2(1D)π + K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ with η c2(1D) → h c γ. No significant signal is found. For the η c2(1D) mass range between 3795 and 3845 MeV/c 2, the branching-fraction upper limits are determined to be ℬ(B + → η c2(1D)K +) × ℬ(η c2(1D) → h c γ) < 3.7 × 10 −5, ℬ(B 0 → η c2(1D)K 0) × ℬ(η c2(1D) → h c γ) < 3.5 × 10 −5, ℬ(B 0 → η c2(1D)π − K +) × ℬ(η c2(1D) → h c γ) < 1.0 × 10 −4, and ℬ(B + → η c2(1D)π + K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ ) × ℬ(η c2(1D) → h c γ) < 1.1 × 10 −4 at 90% C.L. The analysis is based on the 711 fb −1 data sample collected on the ϒ(4S) resonance by the Belle detector, which operated at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider.

47. A prospective clinical study on inhaled nitric oxide therapy for neonates in Japan

Abstract: This is the first report about a prospective clinical investigation to study the efficacy and safety of nitric oxide (NO) inhalation in infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) in Japan.Patients in the present study had to meet the following entry criteria: (i) they had to be younger than 7 days of age; (ii) they had to have evidence of PPHN as defined by echocardiograph; (iii) they had to have severe systemic hypoxemia under mechanical ventilation at 100% oxygen supplementation; and (iv) they had to have a failure to respond to conventional therapies. Patients were excluded from this trial if they had any of the following: hypoplastic lung, structural cardiac lesions or severe multiple anomalies.Nitric oxide inhalation therapy was performed in 68 infants who had severe PPHN at 18 hospitals between May 1995 and May 1997. At birth, 21 of 68 infants (31%) weighed less than 1,500 g and 39 infants weighed more than 2,500 g. The diagnoses associated with PPHN were as follows: 27 infants had meconium aspiration syndrome, 15 infants had dry lung syndrome, nine infants had congenital diaphragmatic hernia, six infants had respiratory distress syndrome, three infants had pneumonia and eight infants had other diagnoses. The mean oxygenation index (OI) before NO inhalation therapy in 68 infants was 43.2; 55 infants (81%) had good responses.These results may be valuable for further randomized controlled and double-blind trials in Japan to evaluate whether NO inhalation therapy is more effective than conventional therapy in infants with severe PPHN.

Abstract: In the excited state of the peptide-bridged Ru(II)/Os(II) binuclear complex, [L 2 Ru(II)mbCO- l -Leu-NHbpyOs(II)(bpy) 2 ] and [L 2 Ru(II)mbCO- l -Pro-NHbpy-Os(II)(bpy) 2 ] [L=bpy (=2,2′-bipyridine) or BTFMB (=4,4′-bis-trifluoromethyl-2,2′-bipyridine), and mb=4-methyl-bpy], a nearly complete quenching of Ru II →π* (Ligand) MLCT emission was observed at room temperature. Lifetime measurements were performed to evaluate the quenching rate and the mechanism on a quantitative basis. In complexes with L=bpy, the intramolecular energy transfer process had a unitary efficiency. In complexes with L=BTFMB, the evidence for the occurrence of competitive energy and electron-transfer processes was provided from the time dependence of the emission spectra. The main pathway for energy-transfer in both systems could be explained by the Forster mechanism. It was suggested that the direction of MLCT excitation to either bridging or non-bridging bpy-ligand causes the large difference of dipole–dipole distance.

49. Toxoplasma antibody prevalence in Nepalese pregnant women and women with bad obstetric history

Abstract: Sera from randomly selected 345 pregnant Nepalese women aged 16-36 years and 13 women with bad obstetric history (BOH) were tested for the presence of Toxoplasma antibodies using microlatex agglutination (MLA) and ELISA methods. The overall prevalence was 55.4% (191/345). Prevalence was slightly higher (59.0%) in older age-group (27-36 years) compared with younger age-group (16-26 years) (52.2%). No significant difference in antibody prevalence in women belonging to two different ethnic-groups (Tibeto-Burmans 57.8%, Indo-Aryans 52.7%) was observed (p0.05). MLA antibody titer ranged from 1:16 to 1:2,048. Over three-fourth of the women showed either high (1:510 or over) or low (1:16 or 1:32) antibody titer. Three percent (6/191) of MLA antibody positive subjects had Toxoplasma IgM antibodies by IgM-ELISA. All six IgM antibody positive pregnant women had MLA antibody titer of over 1:510. Of the total 13 women with BOH, 5 (38.5%) had Toxoplasma antibodies of which 2 (40.0%) were positive for Toxoplasma-IgM antibodies.

50. [Significance of full-thickness chest wall resection as a local treatment for sternum metastasis of breast cancer]

Abstract: Bone metastasis of breast cancer generally tends to be multiple. However, breast cancer frequently metastasizes to the sternum as solitary metastasis. Resection of the sternum was reported to be an effective surgical technique for sternum metastasis which could not be remarkably improved by chemo-endocrine therapy and locoregional recurrent breast cancer invading the skin. A first patient was diagnosed with sternum metastasis invading the skin 44 months after radical mastectomy for breast cancer of stage II. A second patient had breast cancer of stage IV simultaneously with metastases to the sternum and the lung. Only the lung metastasis was successfully controlled by chemo-endocrine therapy, but the sternum metastasis was progressive, following radical mastectomy. Both patients manifested solitary bone metastases and underwent full-thickness chest wall resection. The defect of the chest wall was reconstructed with the mucocutaneous flap using the dorsal latissimus muscle in case 1 and with the abdominal rectus muscle in case 2. Twenty months after the resection of the sternum, the first patient suffered from supraclavicular lymph node metastasis, and the multidisciplinary treatment including radiation therapy was indicated. This therapeutic procedure was effective, and the patient survived for 63 months after resection of the sternum. The second patient has made good progress for six months in maintaining complete remission with chemo-endocrine therapy. These findings suggested that surgical resection was a useful local treatment for solitary sternum metastasis.
