A new molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) sensitive and selective for S-metolachlor herbicide was synthesized by bulk polymerization with the use of N-isopropylacrylamide, acrylamide, and acrylic acid as functional monomers, and N,N'- methylenebis(acrylamide) as a cross-linker. A novel method for obtaining MIP toward S-metolachlor in an aqueous medium and at room temperature, according to the principles of green chemistry, has been discovered, in comparison to synthesis methods at high temperatures and using organic solvents. Under selected experimental conditions, the batch mode type of sorption was carried out efficiently, with S-metolachlor absorption of 2.4 mg per 1 g of MIP and 0.5 mg per 1 g of NIP. The selectivity of the sorbent towards other herbicides and pesticides was also tested, obtaining an ability to recognize S-metolachlor molecules 3.2 times better than atrazine, 6 times better than glyphosate, and 6.2 times better than fenoxaprop-P-ethyl. Given the comprehensive examination of the role of fatty acid-rich diets in central nervous system development in children, this study bridges significant gaps in the understanding of dietary effects on neurodevelopment. It delves into the essential functions of fatty acids in neurodevelopment, including their contributions to neuronal membrane formation, neuroinflammatory modulation, neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity. Despite the acknowledged importance of these nutrients, this review reveals a lack of comprehensive synthesis in current research, particularly regarding the broader spectrum of fatty acids and their optimal levels throughout childhood. By consolidating the existing knowledge and highlighting critical research gaps, such as the effects of fatty acid metabolism on neurodevelopmental disorders and the need for age-specific dietary guidelines, this study sets a foundation for future studies. This underscores the potential of nutritional strategies to significantly influence neurodevelopmental trajectories, advocating an enriched academic and clinical understanding that can inform dietary recommendations and interventions aimed at optimizing neurological health from infancy.

Obesity is a complex chronic condition associated with multiple health risks, including visceral obesity, which is particularly detrimental. To gain insight into the mechanisms underlying obesity and its associated pathologies, a novel zebrafish model was established using an innovative high-fat diet (HFD). The primary goal was to induce visceral obesity in zebrafish and study the associated structural changes. To achieve this, a unique HFD consisting of 40% beef fat (HFD40) was developed and supplemented with magnesium aluminometasilicate to improve stability in a high humidity environment. Feeding regimens were initiated for both juvenile (starting at 2 weeks post-fertilization, lasting 18 weeks) and adult zebrafish (3 months post-fertilization, 8 weeks feeding duration). The innovative dietary approach successfully induced visceral obesity in both juvenile and adult zebrafish. This new model provides a valuable tool to study obesity-related pathologies, metabolic syndrome, and potential therapeutic interventions. Most importantly, the low-cost and easy-to-prepare composition of HFD40 was seamlessly incorporated into the water without the need for separation, was readily absorbed by the fish and induced rapid weight gain in the zebrafish population. In conclusion, this study presents a novel HFD40 composition enriched with a high beef fat concentration (40%), which represents a significant advance in the development of an experimental zebrafish model for the study of visceral obesity and associated metabolic changes., (© 2024. Membrane technologies have found a significant application in separation processes in an exceeding range of industrial fields. The crucial part that is decided regarding the efficiency and effectivity of separation is the type of membrane. The membranes deal with separation problems, working under the various mechanisms of transportation of selected species. This review compares significant types of entrapped matter (ions, compounds, and particles) within membrane technology. The ion-exchange membranes, molecularly imprinted membranes, smart membranes, and adsorptive membranes are investigated. Here, we focus on the selective separation through the above types of membranes and detect their preparation methods. Firstly, the explanation of transportation and preparation of each type of membrane evaluated is provided. Next, the working and application phenomena are evaluated. Finally, the review discusses the membrane modification methods and briefly provides differences in the properties that occurred depending on the type of materials used and the modification protocol.

Background: Machine learning involves strategies and algorithms that may assist bioinformatics analyses in terms of data mining and knowledge discovery. In several applications, viz. in Life Sciences, it is often more important to understand how a prediction was obtained rather than knowing what prediction was made. To this end so-called interpretable machine learning has been recently advocated. In this study, we implemented an interpretable machine learning package based on the rough set theory. An important aim of our work was provision of statistical properties of the models and their components., Results: We present the R.ROSETTA package, which is an R wrapper of ROSETTA framework. The original ROSETTA functions have been improved and adapted to the R programming environment. The package allows for building and analyzing non-linear interpretable machine learning models. R.ROSETTA gathers combinatorial statistics via rule-based modelling for accessible and transparent results, well-suited for adoption within the greater scientific community. The package also provides statistics and visualization tools that facilitate minimization of analysis bias and noise. The R.ROSETTA package is freely available at https://github.com/komorowskilab/R.ROSETTA . To illustrate the usage of the package, we applied it to a transcriptome dataset from an autism case-control study. Our tool provided hypotheses for potential co-predictive mechanisms among features that discerned phenotype classes. These co-predictors represented neurodevelopmental and autism-related genes., Conclusions: R.ROSETTA provides new insights for interpretable machine learning analyses and knowledge-based systems. We demonstrated that our package facilitated detection of dependencies for autism-related genes. Although the sample application of R.ROSETTA illustrates transcriptome data analysis, the package can be used to analyze any data organized in decision tables.

Kynurenic acid (KYNA) is a neuroactive metabolite of tryptophan. KYNA naturally occurs in breast milk and its content increases with lactation, indicating the role of neonatal nutrition in general growth with long-term health effects. KYNA is also an antagonist of ionotropic glutamate receptors expressed in bone cells. The aim of this study was to establish the effects of chronic KYNA supplementation on bone homeostasis in young rats, using mandible as a model bone. Female and male newborn Wistar rats were divided into control and KYNA-administered groups until 60 days of age (25x101 mg/L or 25x102 mg/L in drinking water). Hemimandibles were subjected to densitometry, computed tomography analysis and mechanical testing. Rats supplemented with KYNA at both doses showed a decrease in body weight. There were no effects of KYNA administration and mandible histomorphometry. In males, a significant quadratic effect (P < 0.001) was observed in the densitometry of the hemimandible, where BMD increased in the group supplemented with 2.5x101 mg/L of KYNA. Analysis of mechanical tests data showed that when fracture forces were corrected for bone geometry and rats body weight the improvement of bone material properties was observed in male and female rats supplemented with lower dose of KYNA. This study showed that chronic supplementation with KYNA may limit weight gain in the young, without adversely affecting the development of the skeleton., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a life-threatening disorder of liver function. Kynurenic acid (KYNA), a tryptophan metabolite formed along the kynurenine metabolic pathway, possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Its presence in food and its potential role in the digestive system was recently reported. The aim of this study was to define the effect of KYNA on liver failure. The Wistar rat model of thioacetamide-induced liver injury was used. Morphological and biochemical analyses as well as the measurement of KYNA content in liver and hepatoprotective herbal remedies were conducted. The significant attenuation of morphological disturbances and aspartate and alanine transaminase activities, decrease of myeloperoxidase and tumor necrosis factor- α , and elevation of interleukin-10 levels indicating the protective effect of KYNA in thioacetamide (TAA) - induced liver injury were discovered. In conclusion, the hepatoprotective role of KYNA in an animal model of liver failure was documented and the use of KYNA in the treatment of ALF was suggested.

Knowledge of the prevalence of ESBL enzymes among P. aeruginosa strains compared to the Enterobacteraiceae family is limited. The phenotypic tests recommended by EUCAST for the detection of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae are not always suited for P. aeruginosa strains. This is mainly due to the presence of other families of ESBLs in P. aeruginosa isolates more often than in Enterobacteriaceae, production of natural AmpC cephalosporinase and its overexpression, and co-production of metallo-β-lactamases. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of ESBLs in P. aeruginosa isolated from patients from hospitals in Warsaw, to evaluate the ESBL production of these isolates using currently available phenotypic tests, their modifications, multiplex PCR and molecular typing of ESBL-positive isolates by PFGE. Clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa were collected in 2000-2014 from four Warsaw hospitals. Based on the data obtained in this study, we suggest using three DDST methods with inhibitors, such as clavulanic acid, sulbactam and imipenem, to detect ESBL-producing P. aeruginosa strains. Depending on the appearance of the plates, we suggest a reduction in the distance between discs with antibiotics to 15 mm and the addition of boronic acid at 0.4 mg per disc. The analysed isolates carried genes encoding ESBL from the families VEB (69 isolates with VEB-9), GES (6 with GES-1, 1 GES-5, 5 GES-13 and 2 with GES-15), OXA-2 (12 with OXA-15, 1 OXA-141, 1 OXA-210, 1 OXA-543 and 1 with OXA-544) and OXA-10 (5 isolates with OXA-74 and one with OXA-142). The most important result of this study was the discovery of three new genes, blaGES-15, blaOXA-141 and blaOXA-142; their nucleotide sequences have been submitted to the NCBI GenBank. It is also very important to note that this is the first report on the epidemiological problem of VEB-9-producing bacterial strains, not only in Poland but also worldwide.

Objective: Estimation of the role of main dietary compounds in the risk of developing pancreatic cancer., Research Methods and Procedures: Literature published till 2010 was reviewed and selected for further analysis. The used terms were: red meat, minced meat, ham, bacon, sausages, white meat, poultry, vegetables, fish, eggs, fruits, lifestyle, diet, pancreatic cancer and pancreatic neoplasm. The collected data were meta-analysed with calculation of combined relative risk and 95% confidence interval as well as studies heterogeneity., Results: A meta-analysis of 11 case-control studies indicates that red meat ingestion elevates pancreatic cancer risk by 48% (95% CI=1.25-1.76). The vegetables and fruit reduce the risk by 38% (95% CI=0.54-0.73) and 29% (95% CI=0.59-0.84), respectively. The pooled analyses of 10 cohort studies do not show significant relations between main dietary compound ingestion and pancreatic cancer risk., Conclusion: The red meat intake is associated with elevated risk of pancreatic cancer in contrast to vegetables and fruit ingestion. The ingestion of red meat, vegetables and fruit in cohort studies was not influenced on pancreatic cancer risk. Unlabelled: The introduction of markers which help in the identification of patients prone to suffer from postoperative complications enables to recognize them more easily and thus, treat them more effectively. THE AIM OF THE STUDY was to evaluate complete blood count indicators, as well as preoperative results obtained on the basis of the POSSUM and P-POSSUM scoring systems, considering the prediction of complications after surgical resections in the pancreato-duodenal area., Material and Methods: A prospective 30-day non-interventional clinical study was conducted on a group of 65 patients who underwent scheduled surgery, due to pancreatic head cancer or chronic pancreatitis. Total pancreatoduodenectomy was performed in 24.1% of patients, while the remaining were subject to hemi-pancreatoduodenectomy. The authors evaluated the preoperative complete blood count parameters, as well as the risk of complications and mortality using the audit POSSUM and P-POSSUM scoring systems., Results: Postoperative complications were observed in 32.4% of patients. The white blood cell count and platelet count in the preoperative period were statistically lower in the group of patients with postoperative complications, in comparison to patients without diagnosed complications. Higher severity scores obtained by means of the P-POSSUM scoring system, as well as higher mortality during the perioperative period can be ascribed to patients who suffered postoperative complications. However, no correlation was found between the occurrence of complications and gender, age, type of resection, preoperative hemoglobin level, absolute lymphocyte count, or numerical value representing the patient's general condition (POSSUM) and predicted postoperative morbidity., Conclusions: The absolute white blood cell count and total platelet count during the preoperative period may be considered as an indicator of the higher risk of complications during pancreato-duodenal area resections. The usefulness of the POSSUM and P-POSSUM scoring systems is limited. However, the surgical severity index and calculated mortality coefficient risk can facilitate the identification of patients threatened with postoperative complications.

Introduction: The colon and rectum are common sites of food-related cancer in developed countries. Recent studies strongly suggest that red meat intake is associated with colon cancer, whereas for rectal cancer such an association still needs to be proved. The aim of the study was to assess the role of total amount and frequency of red meat intake in colorectal carcinogenesis based on published data using meta-analysis methods., Material and Methods: The literature published until 2009 was selected from: MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, CancerLit, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library databases. The used search terms were: colorectal cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, meat intake, red meat intake, red meat consumption, meat consumption, colorectal cancer risk, colon cancer risk, rectal cancer risk and lifestyle. Articles investigating red meat intake of more often than once a day or 50 g per day were reviewed and selected for further analysis., Results: Twenty-two studies fulfilled the established criteria. A meta-analysis confirmed the carcinogenic effect of the consumption of over 50 g of red meat per day for the colon (relative risk 1.21, 1.07-1.37) but not for the rectum (relative risk 1.30, 0.90-1.89). Red meat intake more frequently than once a day can induce both colonic (relative risk 1.37, 1.09-1.71) and rectal cancer (relative risk 1.43, 1.24-1.64)., Conclusions: Red meat intake is associated with elevated risk of developing colorectal cancer. The frequency of red meat consumption rather than total amount of consumed meat is associated with a higher risk of colorectal carcinogenesis.

In 34 cases of ischaemic cerebral vascular disease (24 patients with completed stroke and 10 with RIND or TIA) complex studies of serum lipids were performed. The level of total cholesterol, cholesterol HDL, phospholipids, triglycerides and apolipoprotein B was evaluated. The obtained results revealed in RIND and TIA syndrome higher values of phospholipids, apolipoprotein B and cholesterol HDL than in completed ischaemic stroke. However the differences were not great enough, draw conclusions about the dynamics of changes in course of progress of the ischaemic cerebral vascular disease. In allmost all cases of completed stroke and in RIND or TIA syndrome a drop of cholesterol HDL was found. Other deviations of lipid level were noticed only in few cases. Notwithstanding the significance of other than hyperlipidemia risk factors, especially of elevated blood pressure, it seems reasonable to start adequate treatment when in patient with RIND or TIA abnormal values of serum lipids are found.

An effect of a 14-day drinking of coffee on some blood serum indices of lipid metabolism was investigated in 20 healthy volunteers and 20 patients with hyper lipoproteinemia (type IIb). The study was carried out in two subgroups: healthy volunteers or patients with hyperlipoproteinemia assigned to the first subgroup drank ordinary coffee and patients assigned to the second subgroup drank coffee deprived of irritant substances (4 glasses daily). It was found that ordinary coffee significantly increased total serum cholesterol and decreased serum HDL-cholesterol in healthy volunteers. Such effects were not seen in subgroup drinking coffee deprived of irritant substances. More significant increase in serum total cholesterol and decrease in serum HDL-cholesterol were found in patients with hyperlipoproteinemia. Drinking of modified coffee does not cause any significant changes in serum lipid metabolism. The authors concluded that drinking of the ordinary coffee should be restricted in patients with hyperlipoproteinemia and use of coffee deprived of irritant substances might be recommended to patients with this disease.
