Search

In the last decade, heavy-ion based experiments (HypHI, STAR and ALICEi ) announced surprisingly short lifetime for 3 ΛH mesonic weak decay (MWD), which is difficult to interpret given the fact that 3 ΛH is a very loosely bound system. It will be very interesting to study this issue with a different experimental approach. We propose a direct measurement for 3 ΛH hypernucleus MWD lifetime with ∼10% precision as J-PARC E73 experiment; 4 ΛH hypernucleus lifetime will also be measured as a feasibility test for our experimental approach. In this proceeding, we will introduce the experimental method and the current status of E73 experiment.

We have measured the 3d→2p transition x rays of kaonic ^{3}He and ^{4}He atoms using superconducting transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeters with an energy resolution better than 6 eV (FWHM). We determined the energies to be 6224.5±0.4(stat)±0.2(syst) eV and 6463.7±0.3(stat)±0.1(syst) eV, and widths to be 2.5±1.0(stat)±0.4(syst) eV and 1.0±0.6(stat)±0.3(stat) eV, for kaonic ^{3}He and ^{4}He, respectively. These values are nearly 10 times more precise than in previous measurements. Our results exclude the large strong-interaction shifts and widths that are suggested by a coupled-channel approach and agree with calculations based on optical-potential models.

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ^{-} absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-Λ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ^{-}+^{14}N→_{Λ}^{10}Be+_{Λ}^{5}He. For the binding energy of the Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ^{-}-^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.21 MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ^{-} is likely a nuclear 1p state which indicates a weak ΞN-ΛΛ coupling.

A new hyperon-proton scattering experiment, dubbed J-PARC E40, was performed to measure differential cross sections of the Σ+p, Σ−p elastic scatterings and the Σ−p → Λn scattering by identifying a lot of Σ particles in the momentum ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 GeV/c produced by the π±p → K+Σ± reactions. We successfully measured the differential cross sections of these three channels with a drastically improved accuracy with a fine angular step. These new data will become important experimental constraints to improve the theories of the two-body baryon-baryon interactions. Following this success, we proposed a new experiment to measure the differential cross sections and spin observables by using a highly polarized Λ beam for providing quantitative information on the ΛN interaction. The results of three Σp channels and future prospects of the Λp scattering experiment are described.

We report on the first observation of γ rays emitted from an sd-shell hypernucleus, _{Λ}^{19}F. The energy spacing between the ground state doublet, 1/2^{+} and 3/2^{+} states, of _{Λ}^{19}F is determined to be 315.5±0.4(stat)_{-0.5}^{+0.6}(syst) keV by measuring the γ-ray energy of the M1(3/2^{+}→1/2^{+}) transition. In addition, three γ-ray peaks are observed and assigned as E2(5/2^{+}→1/2^{+}), E1(1/2^{-}→1/2^{+}), and E1(1/2^{-}→3/2^{+}) transitions. The excitation energies of the 5/2^{+} and 1/2^{-} states are determined to be 895.2±0.3(stat)±0.5(syst) and 1265.6±1.2(stat)_{-0.5}^{+0.7}(syst) keV, respectively. It is found that the ground state doublet spacing is well described by theoretical models based on existing s- and p-shell hypernuclear data.

We have developed a new germanium (Ge) detector unit for hypernuclear γ-ray spectroscopy at J-PARC, which comprises a new Ge detector array Hyperball-J. A compact pulse-tube refrigerator is coupled to a coaxial Ge detector in order to achieve lower crystal temperatures as a means to increase radiation hardness. The obtained crystal temperature is 72 K, while an energy resolution is maintained at (FWHM) 3.1(1) keV for 1.33 MeV γ rays using a gate-integrated shaping amplifier (ORTEC 973U). Gain shifts with changing crystal temperature are also confirmed for the Ge detector.

We have carried out a pilot data taking of the J-PARC E05 experiment to search for the bound state peaks of $^{12}_\Xi$Be in the $^{12}$C$(K^-, K^+)X$ reaction at 1.8 GeV/$c$. The measurement was performed at the K1.8 beam line of the J-PARC hadron experimental hall with a typical $K^-$ beam intensity of $6\times 10^{5}$ every six seconds. So far the best energy resolution of about 6 MeV$_{FWHM}$ was achieved with the existing SKS spectrometer. With a reasonable statistics, we have succeeded to observe peak structures in the bound region, which seems to suggest that the potential depth of $\Xi$ would be deeper than 14 MeV estimated in the previous measurements.

We have developed a prototype TPC (Time Projection Chamber) based on GEMs (Gas Electron Multipliers) with a gating grid for an H-dibaryon search experiment at J-PARC. To investigate its performance, we conducted laboratory tests and a beam test with two kinds of gases, Ar–CH4 (90:10) and Ar–CF4 (95:5), where the former is mainly used for the tests. The hit detection efficiency per pad row was measured to be 98% at the beam rate up to 5×105 cps cm2 (counts per second), and 90% at the rate of 3×106 cps/cm2. Based on the measured horizontal resolution of 0.19–0.46 mm at the drift length of 5–20 cm, the horizontal position resolution of better than 0.3 mm is estimated in 1 T magnetic field for the final experiment. The ion backflow fraction was measured to be 5% and reduced up to 3% by tuning the GEM voltage configuration, at the gain of 1.6 × 10 4 . The horizontal position distortion due to ion backflow in the gate operation was suppressed within 0.2 mm at the beam rates up to 5 × 10 5 cps / cm 2 , corresponding to the ion backflow up to 2.7 × 10 8 s − 1 cm − 1 . On the other hand, the distortion with the gate open was measured to be 1.3 mm, corresponding to the backflow of 1.3 × 10 9 s − 1 cm − 1 . The distortion in the final experiment is estimated to be 0.3 ± 0.2 mm , within the requirement of 1 mm . The GEMs have been operated continuously for a comparable period of the final experiment, with average energy deposit rates per unit GEM area of 30 times as high as that expected for the experiment.

We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, 6 H, by the 6 Li(π − , K + ) reaction at pπ− =1.2 GeV/c. The obtained missing-mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the 6 H hypernucleus neither below nor above the 4 H+2n particle decay threshold. An upper limit of the production cross section for the bound 6 H hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90% confidence level.

A γ-ray spectroscopy experiment via the C 12 ( π + , K + ) reaction was carried out at KEK-PS in 2005. The K6 beam line and Superconducting Kaon Spectrometer (SKS) were employed to obtain a missing mass spectrum for 12ΛC. An upgraded germanium detector array, Hyperball2, was introduced to detect γ rays emitted from hypernuclei in coincidence with the ( π + , K + ) reaction. As a result of further analysis, a γ-ray peak at 6048 keV (preliminary) was newly observed and assigned as the M1 transition from the 6-MeV excited state to the ground state.

Recent results and future directions of the γ-ray spectroscopy of Λ hypernuclei are discussed. A further analysis of the last KEK experiment (E566) has revealed a new γ transition in 12ΛC at 6048 keV (preliminary), which is ascribed to the M 1 ( 1 3 − → 1 1 − ) transition. At J-PARC, studies will be extended from p-shell to s-shell and sd-shell hypernuclei. In the first part of the J-PARC E13 experiment, we will measure the 4ΛHe( 1 + → 0 + ) transition to study charge-symmetry breaking in the ΛN interaction and investigate the 19ΛF hypernucleus to study ΛN spin–spin interaction further using one of the sd-shell hypernuclei. In the second part of E13, we will precisely measure the spin-flip B ( M 1 ) value for the 7ΛLi( 3 / 2 + → 1 / 2 + ) transition. Beyond E13, we plan to study impurity effects by observing possible changes in nuclear deformation caused by the presence of a Λ in sd-shell hypernuclei, as well as to investigate various heavier Λ hypernuclei in order to precisely determine the energies of Λ single-particle orbits.

In the J-PARC E27 experiment, we search for a K − pp bound state via the d(π +, K +) reaction at 1.7 GeV/c at the K1.8 beam line. The binding energy and decay width of the K − pp bound state can be obtained in the missing mass measurement with a good energy resolution of 2 MeV/c 2. A range counter array (RCA) was constructed to detect the two high-momentum protons from the K − pp decay and to reduce the background such as quasi-free hyperon production. Recently, we have carried out a pilot run in June, 2012. The d(π +, K +) missing-mass spectrum has been obtained for the first time. In this report, an overview of the E27 experiment and a preliminary result on this pilot run are presented.

The first experiment at the J-PARC hadron facility, the J-PARC E19 experiment, aims at searching for the Θ + pentaquark in the hadronic reaction π − p → K − X using the missing-mass technique. Based on a superconducting magnet excited at 2.5 T, the spectrometer achieved the high mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/c2 for the Θ + production process. The first data taking was performed in the autumn of 2010. No significant structure was observed in the missing-mass spectrum. The upper limit obtained for the differential cross section is 0.26 μb/sr in the laboratory frame at a 90 % CL.

The Θ+ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the π−p → K−X reaction at J-PARC. π− meson beams were irradiated on the liquid hydrogen target with the beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/c. In the missing mass spectrum, no peak structure corresponding to Θ+ mass was observed. The preliminary upper limit of the differential cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2° to 15° at the laboratory frame was less than 0.3 μb/sr at the 90 % confidence level in the missing mass region over 1.51 to 1.55 GeV/c2.

Since 1998 we have conducted the project of precision hypernuclear γ -ray spectroscopy using the Ge detector array, Hyperball, and revealed precise level schemes of various p -shell hypernuclei. In the latest experiment at KEK (E566), the ground-state spacing of C Λ 11 and C Λ 12 hypernuclei have been obtained using the C 12 ( π + , K + ) B Λ 11 , C Λ 12 reaction. The accumulated data on the p -shell hypernuclear level energies allow us to establish all of the four strengths of the Λ N spin-dependent interactions and to discuss the Λ N -Σ N coupling force in a nucleus. Further experiments at J-PARC are being prepared, where we tackle new experimental challenges such as a precise measurement of the Λ-spin-flip B ( M 1 ) values and exploration of sd -shell hypernuclei.

The updated results from the hypernuclear γ -ray spectroscopy experiment, KEK-E566, are presented in this paper with emphasis on the γ -ray spin assignment. The KEK-E566 experiment was performed at the KEK-PS K6 beam line in 2005. In this experiment, C 12 ( π + , K + ) C Λ 12 reaction was used to produce C Λ 12 / B Λ 11 hypernuclei. A germanium detector array, Hyperball2, was constructed to detect γ rays emitted from the hypernuclei. Six hypernuclear γ -ray peaks were observed and assigned successfully.

Hypernuclear γ-ray spectroscopy experiments using a germanium detector array, Hyperball, have accumulated precise data on various p-shell Λ hypernuclei. A common parameter set of the spin-dependent effective interaction strengths (Δ, S Λ , S N , and T), which reproduces most of the hypernuclear data, has been determined. In the J-PARC facility, further experiments of hypernuclear γ-ray spectroscopy are planned to be performed.

A series of hypernuclear γ-ray spectroscopy experiments using a germanium detector array, Hyperball, have accumulated precise data on various p-shell Λ hypernuclei. Recently, 12ΛC and 11ΛB were studied at KEK using the ( π + , K + γ ) reaction, and a transition from a directly-populated spin-flip state, 16ΛO( 2 − ), was observed in BNL E930 data. It is discussed whether the spin-dependent ΛN interaction parameters determined from previous experiments can consistently explain other γ spectroscopy data. At the J-PARC facility, further hypernuclear γ-ray spectroscopy experiments are planned, particularly to measure the g factor of a Λ in a nucleus from a spin-flip B ( M 1 ) value and to investigate the ΛN interaction more in detail.

In this paper, a preliminary result from the latest hypernuclear γ -ray spectroscopy experiment (KEK-E566) is presented together with a short discussion. The experiment was performed at the KEK-PS K6 beam line in 2005. In this experiment, the 12C(π+, K +)12 ΛC reaction was employed to populate 12 ΛC/11 ΛB hypernuclei. A germanium detector array, Hyperball2, was constructed to detect γ -rays emitted from the hypernuclei produced. Three hypernuclear γ -ray peaks were observed and assigned.

International audience; In order to test theoretical frameworks of the baryon–baryon (BB) interactions and to confirm the “Pauli effect between quarks” for the first time, we have proposed an experiment (J-PARC E40) to measure low-energy hyperon–proton scattering cross sections of the Σ^+p, Σ^−p elastic scatterings and the Σ^−p → Λn inelastic scattering in the momentum range of 400 < p (MeV/c) < 700 in the laboratory system. Experimentally, we detect two successive reactions of the Σ production (π^±p → K^+Σ^±) and the Σp scattering (Σp → Σp) in the same liquid hydrogen target. The former is measured with two magnetic spectrometers, and the latter with a scattered proton detector (CATCH). By using a high intensity π beam, we estimate that more than 10,000 scattering events can be identified. In this experiment, we aim to provide good quality scattering data to test the theoretical models of the BB interaction.

In dogs, gastric acid is not neutralised even when a meal is present in the stomach. Moreover, dogs take longer to digest their meals than humans do. Accordingly, the most important characteristic of any probiotics considered for use in dogs is high acid tolerance. The probiotic strain Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis LKM512 (hereafter referred to as LKM512) not only exhibits potent acid tolerance, but also has the ability to adhere to intestinal mucin. The aim of the present study was to explore the potential of LKM512 as a probiotic in dogs. Specifically, we investigated whether LKM512 can survive in the large intestine in dogs. LKM512 preparations containing 1010 cfu were administered daily for 14 days in five dogs. Faeces were collected on the day before administration (day 0) as well as on days 7 and 14, and 7 days after administration was halted (day 21). The numbers of viable LKM512 present in faeces were determined by both culture-based techniques and molecular analysis. Changes in intestinal bacterial populations were analysed by 16S rRNA gene semiconductor sequencing using the Ion Torrent Personal Genome Machine (PGM). On days 7 and 14, the numbers of viable LKM512 that were detected in faeces by culture-based techniques and molecular analysis were greater than the original daily dosage. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis using the PGM indicated that relative proportions of Bifidobacterium spp. and Bifidobacteriaceae were significantly higher after administration than before. The present study demonstrated that LKM512 can survive strong gastric acid, and proliferate in the large intestine of dogs. Therefore, LKM512 may be a useful canine probiotic.

We carried out an experiment to produce the neutron-rich hypernucleus H-6(Lambda) via the (pi(-), K+) reaction on Li-6 target at the pion beam momentum of 1.2 GeV/c (J-PARC E10). In order to calibrate the scale of the missing-mass or of the Lambda binding energy of the hypernucleus, we also measured the C-12(pi(+), K+)(12)(Lambda)12, p(pi(-), K+)Sigma(-) and p(pi(+), K+)Sigma(+) reactions. The experiment was performed at the J-PARC Hadron Hall K1.8 beam line in December 2012 and January 2013. The overall collected data sample corresponds to an integrated beam intensity of 1.65 x 10(12) pions

H-dibaryon has been predicted as a stable 6-quark color-singlet state. It has been searched for by many experiments but has never been discovered. Recent lattice QCD calculations predict H-dibaryon as a weakly bound or a resonant state close to the  threshold. E224 and E522 experiments at KEK observed peaks in  invariant mass spectra near the threshold in (K - , K + ) reactions, which were statistically not significant. Therefore, we proposed a new experiment E42 at J-PARC. It will measure decay products of  and   p in a (K - , K + ) reaction. We design a large acceptance spectrometer based on a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) immersed in a dipole magnetic field. The TPC surrounds a target to cover nearly 4 acceptance, and accepts K - beams up to 10 6 counts per second. To suppress drift field distortion at high beam rates, we adopt Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) for electron amplification and a gating grid. We show an overview of the experiment, the design of the spectrometer, and the R&D status of the TPC prototype.

From the 12C(π+, K+)12ΛC reaction, the γ-rays of 261.6±0.24 keV (7/2+→5/2+) and 1481.7±0.7 keV (1/2+→5/2+) of 11ΛB, and 2667.3±2.8 keV (12−→21−) of 12ΛC hypernuclei have been identified using a large germanium detector array Hyperball2 at K6 beam line of KEK. The observed energies of the transitions 1481.7 keV and 261.6 keV are significantly different from the values predicted by the shell model using the Δ and SN parameters determined from the 7ΛLi data.

The ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}X$ reaction with a missing mass resolution of $1.4\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^{2}$ (FWHM) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with a beam momentum of $1.92\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/c$. No peak structure corresponding to the ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$ mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to 15\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} in the laboratory frame is obtained to be $0.26\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{b}/\mathrm{sr}$ in the mass region of $1.51--1.55\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/{c}^{2}$. The upper limit of the ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$ decay width is obtained to be 0.72 and 3.1 MeV for ${J}_{\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{P}=1/{2}^{+}$ and ${J}_{\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{P}=1/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, respectively, using the effective Lagrangian approach.

The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2° to 15° in the laboratory frame is obtained to be 0.26 μb/sr in the mass region of 1.51-1.55 GeV/c(2). The upper limit of the Θ(+) decay width is obtained to be 0.72 and 3.1 MeV for J(Θ)(P)=1/2(+) and J(Θ)(P)=1/2(-), respectively, using the effective Lagrangian approach.

We have been conducting an experimental program to study strangeness photoproduc‐tions on the deuteron by measuring K0 and Λ in the threshold energy region. The π−π+ from K0 and π−p from Λ are detected by use of large acceptance magnetic spectrometers. At the first stage of the program, we started with Neutral Kaon Spectrometer (NKS), which consisted of timing counters and tracking devices in the magnetic field. The NKS spectrometer was employed to measure K0 photoproductions from deuteron and carbon target for the first time. A newly constructed spectrometer (NKS2) has been employed for the second stage experiment. It consists of a 110 ton dipole magnet and a combination of detectors. The momentum distributions of K0 and A from γ+d process were observed, and compared with the calculations based on the isobar models. The NKS2 spectrometer has been upgraded by installing a three dimensional tracking device in the central region. This improvement enables to explore the simultaneous measurement of the K0‐A with reasonable statistics.

Human nasal mucosal samples exposed in vitro to substance P or allergenic Ag were tested for the mRNA of IL-1, IL-2, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, TNF-alpha, and IFN-gamma using specific reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assays. After the administration of substance P, at dosages ranging from 10(-6) to 10(-9) M, an enhanced expression of the mRNA for IL-1 beta, -3, -5, -6, TNF-alpha, and IFN-gamma was observed in all mucosal samples of allergic subjects and in half of the nonallergic subjects. The expression of IL-2 and IL-4 was low. Mucosal samples of allergic subjects showed an increased expression of mRNA for cytokines after administration of specific Ag, whereas no enhancement was observed in samples from nonallergic subjects. Our data suggest that substance P may regulate allergic reactions via enhanced production of certain regulatory cytokines.

We present our plan to measure X rays from Ξ − atoms for the first time in the world at J-PARC. The measurement of X rays from Ξ − atoms is a promising method to study the optical potential between Ξ − and a nucleus as proved in the cases of other negative hadrons (π −, K −, \( \bar p \) , and Σ −). While we are intending to measure X rays from as many targets as possible over the periodic table, we have chosen Fe (iron) as the first target because the measurement will be the easiest and because large X-ray energy shift and width may be expected. Choice of other targets will be determined based on the result of the first experiment. We can accumulate several thousand counts of X rays and determine its energy shift down to ∼0.05 keV. This is sensitive enough to observe expected energy shift (∼1 keV) with reasonable accuracy, while sensitivities for X-ray width is somewhat weaker (measurable down to ∼1 keV).

The Theta+ was searched for via the K+p -> pi+X reaction using the 1.2 GeV/c K+ beam at the K6 beam line of the KEK-PS 12 GeV Proton Synchrotron. In the missing mass spectrum of the K+p -> pi+X reaction, no clear peak structure was observed. Therefore a 90 % C.L. upper limit of 3.5 ub/sr was derived for the differential cross section averaged over 2degree to 22degree in the laboratory frame of the K+p -> pi+Theta+ reaction. This upper limit is much smaller than the theoretical calculation for the t-channel process where a K0* is exchanged. From the present result, either the t-channel process is excluded or the coupling constant of g_{K*N\Theta} is quite small.

We report a 72-year-old female on long-term hemodialysis, who was admitted to the hospital because of hematemesis. On emergency laparotomy, pylorogastrectomy was performed. The resected specimen showed a giant hematoma and traversing fissure along the lesser curvature of the body of the stomach. Histologically, the specimen showed wide hematoma formation and amyloid deposits in the submucosal layer, especially in the wall of blood vessels. These deposits reacted positively to antihuman beta2-microglobulin antibody. The post-operative course was favorable, and the patient was discharged on the 35th hospital day. In this case, the laceration site on the gastric mucosa was almost intact and did not demonstrate ischemic change, suggesting that the giant hematoma was caused by submucosal vessel rupture, which led to the gastric mucosa laceration. To our knowledge, this is the first case of gastric mucosa laceration associated with dialysis-related amyloidosis.

Using Si, an excellent performances, 0.5-2.6GHz bandwidth and 23dB gain, monolithic wideband amplifier IC has been developed, of which input and output impedances are matched to 50 Omega. The f/sub T/=10GHz DNP-11 manufacturing process with optimization for microwave analog ICs has been developed for this IC. And a single-ended three stages circuit with local feedback adopted for this monolithic amplifier loops is circuit.

The photoproduction of K0 and Λ on the deuteron was measured in order to investigate the γn → K 0 Λ reaction process near the threshold (Eγ = 0.8-1.1 GeV). K 0 and Λ events were clearly seen in the π + π − and the pπ − invariant mass spectra, respectively. The momentum spectra of the γd → K 0 X and the γd → ΛX reactions were derived. Additionally, the energy dependence of the integral cross section for the Λ production was also obtained. The K 0 momentum spectra were in agreement with the previous results within statistical errors. The angular distribution of the γn → K 0 Λ reaction in the center of mass system was extracted and it had the backward distribution. The total cross section of the γn → K 0 Λ reaction, which was estimated by subtracting the contribution of K + Λ process from the Λ production on the deuteron, was almost the same as that of the γp → K + Λ .

Kimura's disease is a chronic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology. Although eosinophilia is one of the characteristic features in this disease, little is known about the mechanism of eosinophilia. In the present study it was demonstrated that interleukin-5 (IL-5) was produced and released from the site of a granuloma and lymph nodes after stimulation with candida antigen. It was also shown that peripheral blood eosinophils from patients with Kimura's disease contained a large proportion of hypodense eosinophils and that their viability was prolonged. These results strongly suggest that locally produced IL-5 induced by candida antigen contributes to the eosinophilia in this disease.
