Boundaries between space plasmas occur in numerous contexts and scales, from astrophysical jets to planetary magnetospheres. Mass and momentum transport across boundaries poses a fundamental problem in magnetospheric physics. Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) is a promising mechanism to facilitate transport. Although previous studies have suggested KHI occurrence in various space plasmas, theory predicts that compressibility prevents KHI excitation at boundaries with large density gradients because of previously considered boundary structures where density varies with velocity. Based on the observations of a large density gradient boundary by MAVEN at Mars, where we can observe an extreme case, in this study, we show that it is the entropy, instead of the previously considered density, that varies with the velocity in the real velocity-sheared boundary. The entropy-based boundary structure places the velocity shear in a lower-density region than the traditional density-based structure and weakens the compressibility effect. This new boundary structure thus enables KHI excitation even at large density gradient boundaries, such as at the ionopause of unmagnetized planets and the plasmapause of magnetized planets. The result suggests the ubiquitous occurrence of KHI in the plasma universe and emphasizes its important role in planetary cold plasma escape from unmagnetized planets.

Abstract Mercury’s southern inner magnetosphere is an unexplored region as it was not observed by earlier space missions. In October 2021, BepiColombo mission has passed through this region during its first Mercury flyby. Here, we describe the observations of SERENA ion sensors nearby and inside Mercury’s magnetosphere. An intermittent high-energy signal, possibly due to an interplanetary magnetic flux rope, has been observed downstream Mercury, together with low energy solar wind. Low energy ions, possibly due to satellite outgassing, were detected outside the magnetosphere. The dayside magnetopause and bow-shock crossing were much closer to the planet than expected, signature of a highly eroded magnetosphere. Different ion populations have been observed inside the magnetosphere, like low latitude boundary layer at magnetopause inbound and partial ring current at dawn close to the planet. These observations are important for understanding the weak magnetosphere behavior so close to the Sun, revealing details never reached before.

Abstract A technique for estimating a plasma drift velocity distribution in the ionosphere is presented. This technique is based on a framework for representing a global vector field on a sphere by using a set of localized basis functions which is newly derived as a variant of the spherical elementary current system (SECS). A vector field on a sphere can be divided into its divergence-free (DF) component and curl-free (CF) component. The DF and CF components can then be represented by weighted sums of the DF and CF vector-valued basis functions, respectively. While the SECS basis functions have a singular point, the new basis functions do not diverge over a sphere. This property of the new basis function allows us to achieve robust prediction of the drift velocity at any point in the ionosphere. Assuming that the ionospheric plasma drift velocity has no divergence, its distribution can be represented by a weighted sum of the DF basis functions. The proposed technique estimates the ionospheric plasma drift velocity distribution from the SuperDARN data by using the DF basis functions. Since there are some wide gaps in the spatial coverage of the SuperDARN, an empirical convection model is combined with the framework based on the new basis functions. It is demonstrated that the proposed technique is useful for the estimation and modeling of the ionospheric plasma velocity distribution.

Abstract Storm time Pc5 waves are considered to be excited through the drift‐bounce resonance by ring current ions associated with the injection from the magnetotail. Using the Geospace Environment Modeling System for Integrated Studies–Ring Current simulation, a drift‐kinetic and self‐consistent model for ring current particles, we investigate the excitation mechanism of these waves in the inner magnetosphere. The power spectra of electromagnetic field fluctuations show the excitation of both poloidal and toroidal mode waves in Pc5 frequency range. It is found that these waves are fundamental mode waves with the azimuthal wave number m~ − 20 and excited through the drift resonance with the drifting ions with energies of 80–120 keV. The simulation indicates that global distribution of wave power coincides with the positive local growth rate mainly contributed by the positive phase space density gradient in energy.

In the upcoming JAXA/ERG satellite mission, Wave Particle Interaction Analyzer (WPIA) will be installed as an onboard software function. We study the statistical significance of the WPIA for measurement of the energy transfer process between energetic electrons and whistler-mode chorus emissions in the Earth's inner magnetosphere. The WPIA measures a relative phase angle between the wave vector E and velocity vector v of each electron and computes their inner product W, where W is the time variation of the kinetic energy of energetic electrons interacting with plasma waves. We evaluate the feasibility by applying the WPIA analysis to the simulation results of whistler-mode chorus generation. We compute W using both a wave electric field vector observed at a fixed point in the simulation system and a velocity vector of each energetic electron passing through this point. By summing up Wi of an individual particle i to give Wint, we obtain significant values of Wint as expected from the evolution of chorus emissions in the simulation result. We can discuss the efficiency of the energy exchange through wave-particle interactions by selecting the range of the kinetic energy and pitch angle of the electrons used in the computation of Wint. The statistical significance of the obtained Wint is evaluated by calculating the standard deviation σW of Wint. In the results of the analysis, positive or negative Wint is obtained at the different regions of velocity phase space, while at the specific regions the obtained Wint values are significantly greater than σW, indicating efficient wave-particle interactions. The present study demonstrates the feasibility of using the WPIA, which will be on board the upcoming ERG satellite, for direct measurement of wave-particle interactions.

There are two approaches available for mapping water retention parameters over the study area using a spatial interpolation method. (1) Retention models can be first fitted to retention curves available at sampling locations prior to interpolating model parameters over the study area (the FI approach). (2) Retention data points can first be interpolated over the study area before retention model parameters are fitted (the IF approach). The current study compares the performance of these two approaches in representing the spatial distribution of water retention curves. Standard geostatistical interpolation methods, i.e., ordinary kriging and indicator kriging, were used. The data used in this study were obtained from the Las Cruces trench site database, which contains water retention data for 448 soil samples. Three standard water retention models, i.e., Brooks and Corey (BC), van Genuchten (VG), and Kosugi (KSG), were considered. For each model, standard validation procedures, i.e., leave-one-out cross-validation and split-sample methods were used to estimate the uncertainty of the parameters at each sampling location, allowing for the computation of prediction errors (mean absolute error and mean error). The results show that the IF approach significantly lowered mean absolute errors for the VG model, while also reducing them moderately for the KSG and BC models. In addition, the IF approach resulted in less bias than the FI approach, except when the BC model was used in the split-sample approach. Overall, IF outperforms FI for all three retention models in describing the spatial distribution of retention parameters.

We present results from co-ordinated measurements with the low altitude REIMEI satellite and the ESR (EISCAT Svalbard Radar), together with other ground-based instruments carried out in February 2006. The results mainly relate to the dayside cusp where clear signatures of so-called ion-dispersion are seen in the satellite data. The cusp ion-dispersion is important for helping to understand the temporal and spatial structure of magnetopause reconnection. Whenever a satellite crosses boundaries of flux tubes or convection cells, cusp structures such as ion-dispersion will always be encountered. In our case we observed 3 distinct steps in the ion energy, but it includes at least 2 more steps as well, which we interpret as temporal features in relation to pulsed reconnection at the magnetopause. In addition, fast variations of the electron flux and energy occurring during these events have been studied in detail. The variations of the electron population, if interpreted as structures crossed by the REIMEI satellite, would map near the magnetopause to similar features as observed previously with the Cluster satellites. These were explained as Alfvén waves originating from an X-line of magnetic reconnection.

Physically large dimensional dish antennas in Cassegrain configuration have played an important role in satellite communications during the past several decades. Recently, however, emerging new technologies have begun to displace these elegant antennas in professional telecommunication service due to their lower operating costs. A beneficial aspect of this transitional situation is that it has created opportunities for amateur radio enthusiasts to use these soon-to-be-retired dish antenna systems for limited experimental testing. Adaptation of these professionally designed antennas to bands allocated for amateur radio service presents excellent educational opportunities in using antenna engineering skills and the use of modern electromagnetic simulation software provides a novel perspective for these antenna design and transformation tasks.

It is important to obtain the year-to-year trend of stratospheric minor species in the context of global changes. An important example is the trend in global ozone depletion. The purpose of this paper is to report the accuracy and precision of measurements of stratospheric chemical species that are made at our Poker Flat site in Alaska (65° N, 147° W). Since 1999, minor atmospheric molecules have been observed using a Fourier-Transform solar-absorption infrared Spectrometer (FTS) at Poker Flat. Vertical profiles of the abundances of ozone, HNO3, HCl, and HF for the period from 2001 to 2003 were retrieved from FTS spectra using Rodgers' formulation of the Optimal Estimation Method (OEM). The accuracy and precision of the retrievals were estimated by formal error analysis. Errors for the total column were estimated to be 5.3%, 3.4%, 5.9%, and 5.3% for ozone, HNO3, HCl, and HF, respectively. The ozone vertical profiles were in good agreement with profiles derived from collocated ozonesonde measurements that were smoothed with averaging kernel functions that had been obtained with the retrieval procedure used in the analysis of spectra from the ground-based FTS (gb-FTS). The O3, HCl, and HF columns that were retrieved from the FTS measurements were consistent with Earth Probe/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and HALogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) data over Alaska within the error limits of all the respective datasets. This is the first report from the Poker Flat FTS observation site on a number of stratospheric gas profiles including a comprehensive error analysis.

We report on the observation of two distinct cold (TiNi>2 cm−3) ion populations at geosynchronous orbit. A statistical study was performed on measurements from the geosynchronous Los Alamos plasma instruments, for the period 1990–2004, and complemented by corresponding large-scale plasma sheet data obtained by mapping DMSP observations in the tail. The first population, which has previously been reported in several studies, is observed in the midnight region of geosynchronous orbit. The second population, which has drawn less attention, is detected on the dawn side of geosynchronous orbit. No such cold, dense population is observed on the dusk side of geosynchronous orbit on a frequent basis. The temporal evolution of various plasma parameters as a function of local time shows that the two populations appear at geosynchronous orbit as distinct populations, since the appearance of a midnight population is not usually associated with that of a dawn population, and vice versa. The midnight ion population is typically observed after the IMF has been northward for some time and is convected inward toward geosynchronous orbit after an observed mild southward turning of the average IMF. It is interpreted that the source of the midnight population is the cold, dense plasma sheet (CDPS). The dawn-side cold and dense ion population is associated with previously strong southward IMF and consequently occurs during substantial geomagnetic activity. These events are typically observed around the end of the main phase of the corresponding Dst decrease, down to −50 nT on average. It is unlikely that this dawn population is simply the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) moving closer to Earth because (1) no symmetric dusk population is observed and (2) on average a small sunward flow (~15 km/s) is observed for those events. The cold, dense population at dawn is thus observed during active times (based on Dst, Kp and AE indices) in comparison with the midnight case. However, since the dawn population is observed only around the end of the main Dst decrease, it is concluded that this population does not typically contribute to the Dst decrease during the main phase. This population may rather be transported to geosynchronous orbit by means of a compression and convection enhancement in the magnetosphere, with a preferential access from the dawn flank with no apparent counterpart at dusk. DMSP data suggest that a cold and dense plasma source is mainly present at dawn.

Electromagnetic low-frequency waves in the magnetotail lobe close to the PSBL (Plasma Sheet Boundary Layer) are studied using the Cluster spacecraft. The lobe waves show Alfvénic properties and transport their wave energy (Poynting flux) on average toward the Earth along magnetic field lines. Most of the wave events are rich with oxygen (O+) ion plasma. The rich O+ plasma can serve to enhance the magnetic field fluctuations, resulting in a greater likelihood of observation, but it does not appear to be necessary for the generation of the waves. Taking into account the fact that all events are associated with auroral electrojet enhancements, the source of the lobe waves might be a substorm-associated instability, i.e. some instability near the reconnection site, or an ion beam-related instability in the PSBL.

Evolution of threading screw dislocation (TSD) conversion during the solution growth of 4H-SiC on a vicinal crystal of 4H-SiC(0001) was investigated by synchrotron X-ray topography. Selecting appropriate X-ray wavelength and g vector, we can change the penetration of X-ray, and the dislocation behaviors with the different depth were successfully observed. Evidently TSDs parallel to the c-axis having c-component Burgers vector were changed into defects on the (0001) basal planes with the same Burgers vector as the TSDs, propagating to the [112¯0] step-flow direction by advancing macrosteps during the solution growth. The TSD conversions stochastically took place during the growth. The conversion rate was almost uniform and finally almost all TSDs were converted to the basal plane defects. The conversion rate was low at the very early stage of the growth, which implies that the macrosteps were not formed at the initial stage of the solution growth.

Extensive airborne measurements of non-methane organic gases (NMOGs), methane, nitrogen oxides, reduced nitrogen species, and aerosol emissions from US wild and prescribed fires were conducted during the 2019 NOAA/NASA Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality campaign (FIREX-AQ). Here, we report the atmospheric enhancement ratios (ERs) and inferred emission factors (EFs) for compounds measured on board the NASA DC-8 research aircraft for nine wildfires and one prescribed fire, which encompass a range of vegetation types. We use photochemical proxies to identify young smoke and reduce the effects of chemical degradation on our emissions calculations. ERs and EFs calculated from FIREX-AQ observations agree within a factor of 2, with values reported from previous laboratory and field studies for more than 80 % of the carbon- and nitrogen-containing species. Wildfire emissions are parameterized based on correlations of the sum of NMOGs with reactive nitrogen oxides (NOy) to modified combustion efficiency (MCE) as well as other chemical signatures indicative of flaming/smoldering combustion, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and black carbon aerosol. The sum of primary NMOG EFs correlates to MCE with an R2 of 0.68 and a slope of −296 ± 51 g kg−1, consistent with previous studies. The sum of the NMOG mixing ratios correlates well with CO with an R2 of 0.98 and a slope of 137 ± 4 ppbv of NMOGs per parts per million by volume (ppmv) of CO, demonstrating that primary NMOG emissions can be estimated from CO. Individual nitrogen-containing species correlate better with NO2, NOy, and black carbon than with CO. More than half of the NOy in fresh plumes is NO2 with an R2 of 0.95 and a ratio of NO2 to NOy of 0.55 ± 0.05 ppbv ppbv−1, highlighting that fast photochemistry had already occurred in the sampled fire plumes. The ratio of NOy to the sum of NMOGs follows trends observed in laboratory experiments and increases exponentially with MCE, due to increased emission of key nitrogen species and reduced emission of NMOGs at higher MCE during flaming combustion. These parameterizations will provide more accurate boundary conditions for modeling and satellite studies of fire plume chemistry and evolution to predict the downwind formation of secondary pollutants, including ozone and secondary organic aerosol.

Biomass burning (BB) is a major source of reactive organic carbon into the atmosphere. Once in the atmosphere, these organic BB emissions, in both the gas and particle phases, are subject to atmospheric oxidation, though the nature and impact of the chemical transformations are not currently well constrained. Here we describe experiments carried out as part of the FIREX FireLab campaign, in which smoke from the combustion of fuels typical of the western United States was sampled into an environmental chamber and exposed to high concentrations of OH, to simulate the equivalent of up to 2 d of atmospheric oxidation. The evolution of the organic mixture was monitored using three real-time time-of-flight mass spectrometric instruments (a proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer, an iodide chemical ionization mass spectrometer, and an aerosol mass spectrometer), providing measurements of both individual species and ensemble properties of the mixture. The combined measurements from these instruments achieve a reasonable degree of carbon closure (within 15 %–35 %), indicating that most of the reactive organic carbon is measured by these instruments. Consistent with our previous studies of the oxidation of individual organic species, atmospheric oxidation of the complex organic mixture leads to the formation of species that on average are smaller and more oxidized than those in the unoxidized emissions. In addition, the comparison of mass spectra from the different fuels indicates that the oxidative evolution of BB emissions proceeds largely independent of fuel type, with different fresh smoke mixtures ultimately converging into a common, aged distribution of gas-phase compounds. This distribution is characterized by high concentrations of several small, volatile oxygenates, formed from fragmentation reactions, as well as a complex pool of many minor oxidized species and secondary organic aerosol, likely formed via functionalization processes.
