ObjectivesIn addition to harms caused to individuals who smoke, second-hand smoke (SHS or passive smoke) is an important public health issue. We aim to estimate the extent of preventable deaths due to tobacco and SHS exposure in Southeast Asia.MethodsData were from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. We analysed data from Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.ResultsIn 2019, there were 728,500 deaths attributable to tobacco in Southeast Asia, with 128,200 deaths attributed to SHS exposure. The leading causes of preventable deaths were ischemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, lower respiratory infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer. Among deaths attributable to tobacco, females had higher proportions of deaths attributable to SHS exposure than males in Southeast Asia.ConclusionThe burden of preventable deaths in a year due to SHS exposure in Southeast Asia is substantial. The implementation and enforcement of smoke-free policies should be prioritized to reduce the disease burden attributed to passive smoking in Southeast Asia.

Abstract Introduction Gestational weight gain (GWG) is influenced by various factors during pregnancy. This study attempts to explore the relationship between environmental factors i.e., sunlight exposure and psychological health i.e. psychological well-being and sleep quality during pregnancy with total gestational weight gain. Methods This was a prospective observational study conducted in government maternity clinics in Kuala Lumpur. Pregnant women aged 19–39 years without comorbidities were recruited during second trimester and followed up until birth. The participants were required to wear a UVB dosimeter for a total of three consecutive days (2 weekdays and 1 weekend) to determine sunlight exposure (SED) during their second trimester. The PSQI and DASS-21 were used to determine sleep quality and psychological wellbeing, respectively. GWG data were collected from clinic health records. The association of sun exposure and psychological health with total GWG was determined using multiple linear regression. Results A total of 73 pregnant women aged 27.9 ± 3.3 years were included in the analysis. The prevalence of pregnant women exhibiting stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms was 11%, 40%, and 16% respectively. The global PSQI median score was 5 (IQR = 3), with 59% having poor sleep quality. Median sleep duration was 7 h (IQR = 2) while median sleep efficiency was 92% (IQR = 14). The median SED was 0.04 (IQR = 0.09), with 51% of them being under the 50th percentile. The majority had adequate GWG (58%). Sleep parameters were not found to be correlated with total GWG except for sleep latency (ρ = -0.356, p = 0.002). Sunlight exposure was found to have no significant relationship with sleep and total GWG. Adjusted multiple linear regression showed that greater depression is associated with higher total GWG (β = 0.239, p = 0.039) while controlling for sleep quality. Conclusion Depression was associated with total GWG when sleep quality was controlled for while sunlight exposure had no significant association with GWG. Future studies should study the complex relationship between factors of mental health, sleep, and weight gain during pregnancy. Healthcare providers may be better equipped to develop interventions aimed to prevent negative maternal and fetal health outcomes.

Introduction Tobacco advertisement, promotion, and sponsorship (TAPS) in all forms influences youth smoking behaviors. TAPS exposure enhances their smoking frequency and vulnerability. A 2018 Indonesia Ministry of Health (MoH) Survey showed increased smoking prevalence among youth aged 10–18 years. Thus, our objective was to analyze the relationship between TAPS and the increased Indonesian youth smoking behavior. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis of the Indonesian 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey. The sample size differed in each variable: current smokers n=3386, ever smoker n=3666, and cigarette consumption per day n=1355. We adjusted for socioeconomic and demographic variables and used logistic regression with youth smoking prevalence as the outcome and TAPS variables as the primary exposures. Results The current male youth smoker prevalence was 38.3%, ever smoker was 67%, and high consumption per day smoker (≥2 cigarettes per day) was 39.1%. Youth respondents exposed to the promotion or sponsorship of cigarette products showed an increase in three smoking behaviors. In particular, when youth respondents were exposed to more than one type of cigarette promotion (AOR=1.67, 95% CI: 1.33–2.09) or noticed one type of cigarette sponsorship (AOR=2.06, 95% CI: 1.44–2.93), their odds of all three smoking behaviors (current smoker, ever smoker, and high consumption smoker) increased. Conclusions TAPS increase smoking behaviors among Indonesian youth. Therefore, to protect Indonesian youth health in the future, strategic action is needed to reduce youth smoking by banning all forms of TAPS in Indonesia. Tob.

This paper aims to report results of research on the association between sociodemographic indicators and teachers’ efforts to help students cope with problems and help build students’ Adversity Quotient. A questionnaire in the form of self-report inventory was distributed to 102 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students of A- and C-accredited primary schools in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Multiple regression and inductive reasoning were used for analysis. FGDs with teachers were conducted in order to explore teachers’ efforts in helping improve students’ adversity quotient. Research results showed that students who were middle child had significantly lower AQ compared to those of first-born or earlier-born child, while sixth-graders had significantly higher AQ scores compared to fourth graders, and children whose fathers were skilled workers had greater odds of having high AQ. Teachers had already done some LEAD sequence, but had not guided students to explore and analyze the problem by themselves. The results have some implications for the education policy to integrate religious teachings into the curriculum that can facilitate the improvement of students’ Adversity Quotient.

Introduction: Blood glucose is an important component in the body produced by the consumption of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. A blood glucose imbalance causes an increase in the blood glucose level in the body. The occurrence of economic changes due to tourism may lead to a change in diet that can lead to increased blood glucose levels. This study aims to analyse the factors related to random blood glucose in people living in coastal tourism areas in Banyuwangi Methods: The study used a cross-sectional survey. A total of 112 respondents were recruited using the random sampling method, using two-stage cluster sampling techniques taken from the Head of household data in multiple villages. The factors studied included demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, and family health history. Results: The results showed that men had 28% higher random blood glucose compared to woman. People living in Bangsring had 31% higher random blood glucose compared to those in Buluagung. Conclusion: Local health care services should put extra effort into include men and those living in Bangsring in programs to prevent Diabetes Mellitus in coastal areas.

Introduction There are weak regulations and controls on tobacco sales to adolescents in Indonesia, and these may have contributed to the increase in smoking prevalence among adolescents in the country. Our study aims to calculate the density of cigarette retailers near schools and ascertain the factors associated with sales to minors. Methods We conducted geographical mapping by recording the GPS position of cigarette retailers in 15 locations in Banyuwangi District, Indonesia, to assess the density and proximity of cigarette retailers to schools. We interviewed randomly selected retailers, from the geographical mapping, for information on sales to minors, the cheapest price cigarettes are sold and the most popular cigarette brand purchased by adolescents, as well as owners/keepers knowledge of the regulation regarding sales to minors. Results We identified 770 retailers of consumer goods in the study location; 28.1% (216) sold cigarettes, with mean density of 1.1 cigarette retailers per 100 m. Introduction The presence and density of tobacco retailers is associated with the perception of high availability of cigarettes and ease of purchase. Indonesia is the second largest cigarette market in the world with an increasing smoking rate among young people aged 10–18 years. Our study aims to assess density of cigarette outlets in neighbourhoods and around schools, and to evaluate correlation between retailer proximity to schools and retailer selling practices. Methods We conducted a geographical mapping and then an audit survey of 1000 randomly selected cigarette retailers in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. We measured neighbourhood retailer density, and retailer proximity to schools. We linked the coordinate data to the audit data to assess the association between retailer distance from schools with likelihood of selling tobacco to young people and selling single cigarette sticks. Results We mapped 4114 cigarette retailers in Denpasar, the most common type was a kiosk, 3199 (77.8%), followed by mini market/convenience stores, 606 (14.7%). Retailer density was 32.2/km2 and 4.6/1000 population. We found that 37 (9.7 %) of the 379 schools in Denpasar have at least one cigarette retailer within a 25 m radius and 367 (96.8%) within a 250 m radius. Of the 485 audited retailers within a 250 m radius of a school, 281 (57.9%) admitted selling cigarettes to young people and 325 (67.0%) sold cigarettes as single sticks. Cigarette retailers were less likely to sell cigarettes to young people based on distance from schools, but this was only significant at the furthest distance of more than 500 m from schools. Conclusions In an unregulated retailer setting such as Indonesia, cigarette retailers are ubiquitous and selling to young people is commonplace. The Indonesian government should enforce the prohibition on selling to young people and should regulate cigarette retailers to reduce youth access to cigarettes.

Background: Brain and cognitive development during the first 1000 days from conception are affected by multiple biomedical and socioenvironmental determinants including nutrition, health, nurturing, and stimulation. An improved understanding of the long-term influence of these factors is needed to prioritise public health investments to optimise human development. Methods: We did a follow-up study of the Supplementation with Multiple Micronutrients Intervention Trial (SUMMIT), a double-blind, cluster-randomised trial of maternal supplementation with multiple micronutrients (MMN) or iron and folic acid (IFA) in Indonesia. Of 27 356 live infants from birth to 3 months of age in 2001–04, we re-enrolled 19 274 (70%) children at age 9–12 years, and randomly selected 2879 from the 18 230 who were attending school at a known location. Of these, 574 children were oversampled from mothers who were anaemic or malnourished at SUMMIT enrolment. We assessed the effects of MMN and associations of biomedical (ie, maternal and child anthropometry and haemoglobin and preterm birth) and socioenvironmental determinants (ie, parental education, socioeconomic status, home environment, and maternal depression) on general intellectual ability, declarative memory, procedural memory, executive function, academic achievement, fine motor dexterity, and socioemotional health. The SUMMIT trial was registered, number ISRCTN34151616. Findings: Children of mothers given MMN had a mean score of 0·11 SD (95% CI 0·01–0·20, p=0·0319) higher in procedural memory than those given IFA, equivalent to the increase in scores with half a year of schooling. Children of anaemic mothers in the MMN group scored 0·18 SD (0·06–0·31, p=0·0047) higher in general intellectual ability, similar to the increase with 1 year of schooling. Overall, 18 of 21 tests showed a positive coefficient of MMN versus IFA (p=0·0431) with effect sizes from 0·00–0·18 SD. In multiple regression models, socioenvironmental determinants had coefficients of 0·00–0·43 SD and 22 of 35 tests were significant at the 95% CI level, whereas biomedical coefficients were 0·00–0·10 SD and eight of 56 tests were significant, indicating larger and more consistent impact of socioenvironmental factors (p

This research contains data on the adsorption test and characterization of banana peel activated carbon as an adsorbent for water contaminated with various heavy metals. Banana peel is a common post-harvest waste, making it easy to obtain. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) is used to investigate the various heavy metal content in polluted water that are harmful to health, such as Mn, Fe, Zn, and Pb in concentrations of 1.351; 1.210; 17.403; and 0.210 mg/L, respectively. These metals exceed the standard limits for clean water quality that are suitable for sanitation hygiene purposes. Banana peel activated carbon samples were tested in polluted water and re-examined using AAS. The parameters used to calculate the percent adsorption of the four heavy metals were variations in adsorbent mass (0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0 g), stirring speed (50; 100; 150; 200; 250 rpm), pH (4; 5; 6; 7; 8; and contact time (30; 60; 90; 120; 150 min). Scanning Electron Microscopy/X-Ray Spectroscopy Energy Dispersion (SEM/EDS) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize and determine the morphology, material content, and crystal structure formed by the samples. Brunaurer, Emmet, and Teller/Barret, Joyner, and Halenda (BET/BJH) were used to investigate the surface area, pore size, and isotherm type. In this paper, we report about chemically interaction between Pt Subnano-Clusters on Graphene Nano Sheets (GNS). The aim of this research is to clarify the size effect of Pt clusters on Pt 1-7 wt.%/GNS. This research is an experimental laboratory research. GNS was synthesized by using modified Hummer's method and 1-7 wt.% Pt/GNS were prepared with impregnation method. Then, they were analyzed with TG/DTA, XRD, TEM and XPS, respectively. The results show that Pt clusters are well deposited on GNS (TG/DTA and TEM data). Those data also are consistent with XRD data. The weak and broad peaks appear at 2θ = 39°, indicating Pt metal exists on GNS. The state of Pt is confirmed by using XPS. The appearance of Pt 4f. peaks proves that Pt metal is chemical interaction on GNS. The size of Pt clusters may affect the chemically properties of Pt/GNS catalysts.
