Background Policy action is required to address physical inactivity in boys and girls. This action can be supported by international data collection, comparisons and sharing of good practices. Thus, this study aims to present and discuss the ongoing monitoring of physical activity (PA) indicators in children and adolescents in the 28 EU Member States. Methods Data on PA recommendations, PA prevalence, physical education (PE) and PA promotion programs for children and adolescents were provided by governments in a joint EU/WHO survey on the implementation status of the EU Council Recommendation on Health-Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) across Sectors. Results In 23 countries, national recommendations on PA are available. Detailed PA prevalence data among children and adolescents was available in 27 countries, in most cases separately for sex/gender and age groups. The total amount of PE lessons in schools differed greatly between countries and lessons were predominantly mandatory. After-school HEPA promotion programs were mostly implemented in EU Member States (78.6%), followed by active school breaks (57.1%), active travel to school (57.1%) and active breaks during school lessons (53.6%). Conclusions This study summarizes the monitoring of PA indicators among children and adolescents in all EU Member States by providing a comprehensive overview of the status of PA promotion and monitoring across the region. Based on our findings, it could be concluded that the current EU monitoring system on PA promotion should be adapted to provide evidence that can inform future policy development.

Aim The main objectives of this systematic review were to evaluate the effects of interventions on leisure-time PA of boys and girls and to appraise the extent to which studies have taken sex/gender into account. Subject and methods PRISMA guidelines were followed. Two researchers independently screened studies for eligibility and assessed the risk of bias. Descriptive analyses were conducted to evaluate intervention effects in relation to the consideration of sex/gender in the studies based on a newly developed checklist. Additionally, meta-analyses were performed to determine the effect of interventions on girls’ and boys’ leisure-time PA. Results Overall 31 unique studies reported 44 outcomes on leisure-time PA and 20,088 participants were included in the current study. Consideration of sex/gender aspects in studies is low. PA outcomes with statistically significant same/similar effects in boys and girls showed higher quality of reporting sex/gender aspects of theoretical and/or conceptual linkages with sex/gender, measurement instruments, intervention delivery, location and interventionists and participant flow than PA outcomes without significant effects in both boys and girls or effects only in boys or girls. Interventions had a small but significant effect on girls (number of included studies (k) = 9, g = 0.220, p = .003) and boys (k = 7, g = 0.193, p = .020) leisure-time PA. Conclusion Higher reporting of sex/gender aspects may improve leisure-time PA of boys and girls. Nevertheless, there remains a need to address sufficient consideration of sex/gender aspects in interventions in the context of PA.

This study investigated the corresponding change between psycho-social predictors and physical activity (PA) behavior and if these relationships were dependent on the stages of change from the Transtheoretical Model in Minority American adolescents. We conducted a longitudinal field study with N = 357 students aged 13–18 years (M = 14.24 years, SD = 0.88); predominantly Filipino (61.2%) using a test–retest design assessing psycho-social PA predictors (enjoyment, self-efficacy, family support, friends’ support, knowledge, stage of change) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at two time points over six months. Hierarchical regression results indicated that a positive change of enjoyment, knowledge about PA and family support predicted a change of MVPA, independently of stage. The time-varying covariation showed the importance of the current stage of change for enjoyment, self-efficacy and support of friends for a change of MVPA. Overall, our findings suggest that an individual’s current stage of change should be considered to determine individually appropriate starting points and goals for designing interventions to promote PA among Minority American adolescents.

Physical inactivity is an increasing problem worldwide, but especially among girls. This difference by gender increases with age. Schools serve virtually all young people in most parts of the world and can thus play an important role in promoting physical activity. In this systematic review, we qualitatively and comprehensively assessed the treatment of sex/gender considerations (from study design to discussion of results) in 56 school-based intervention studies aiming to promote physical activity in children and adolescents. In all 56 studies, the factor of sex/gender was only rudimentarily considered, regardless of the effectiveness of the intervention. The meta-analysis revealed that the interventions had significant but relatively small effects with both girls and boys, along with high heterogeneity. To obtain better information about effective strategies that promote physical activity for both girls and boys equally, researchers conducting future intervention studies should pay attention to sex/gender differences and report on how they take this factor into account.

Many working parents experienced a double burden of fulltime employment and increased childcare obligations during the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic. This paper explores how this twofold burden affected leisure time sports and exercise (LTSE). Following a gender inequality perspective, it is assumed that the level of LTSE of working mothers are more negatively affected by the pandemic than LTSE levels of working fathers. Using the nation-wide representative SPOVID survey, the paper analyses data of all respondents in fulltime employment (N = 631). Data collection took place in October and November 2020 in collaboration with Forsa, a leading corporation for public opinion polls in Germany. Results show that the pandemic led to a reduction of LTSE levels, but with considerable variation between working mothers and fathers. Fulltime working mothers reduced their LTSE by a substantial margin (54 min per week), but not working fathers. It is concluded that the double burden of work demands and childcare duties in the pandemic was largely shouldered by mothers, who then faced greater difficulties to remain active.

Background: Physical inactivity is often reported in youth and differs among boys and girls. The aim of this study is to assess sex/gender considerations in intervention studies promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior in youth using a sex/gender checklist. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in August 2018 to identify all relevant controlled trials. Studies screened must have reported a quantified measure of physical activity and/or sedentary behavior, and identified participants by sex/gender at baseline. For evaluation of the sex/gender consideration, the authors used a sex/gender checklist developed by expert consensus. Results: The authors reviewed sex/gender considerations in all aspects of intervention development, implementation, and evaluation in 217 studies. Sex/gender aspects were only rudimentarily taken into account, most frequently during statistical analyses, such as stratification or interaction analysis. Conclusions: Sex/gender effects are not sufficiently reported. To develop guidelines that are more inclusive of all girls and boys, future interventions need to document sex/gender differences and similarities, and explore whether sex/gender influences different phases of intervention programs. The newly developed sex/gender checklist can hereby be used as a tool and guidance to adequately consider sex/gender in the several steps of intervention planning, implementation, and evaluation.

The COVID-19 pandemic is associated with crucial changes in children’s daily life including their physical activity (PA) and screen time (ST). Among preschool children, the family represents an important factor for sufficient PA levels by being the gatekeeper for PA. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the family environment, specifically SES, parental support, and having siblings on COVID-19-related changes of PA and ST behavior in 317 (170 boys, 147 girls) German preschool children using longitudinal data. Our results indicate a decline in total amount of sports-related PA, an increase in outdoor play, as well as an increase in leisure ST in preschool children. The changes in total amount of PA differed between children with different levels of parental support as well as in dependence on having siblings. Furthermore, levels of outdoor play and ST in preschool children were influenced by environmental factors like having access to their own garden. We conclude that the family environment (parental support as well as physical environment) is highly relevant for PA and ST levels in preschool children. To provide every child with PA opportunities during potential future lockdowns, restriction policies should be adapted and parents need sophisticated information about the importance of their support and thus the PA levels of their children.

Zusammenfassung Hintergrund Von Gesundheitsförderung profitieren häufig vorwiegend sozial privilegierte Personen während sozial Benachteiligte seltener erreicht werden. Ob dieses Präventionsdilemma auch auf kommunaler Ebene besteht, wurde bislang kaum erforscht. Ziel der Arbeit Die Studie untersucht anhand von zwei bayernweiten Projektausschreibungen zur kommunalen Bewegungsförderung, ob sozioökonomisch deprivierte Kommunen, die geringe Angebotsstrukturen der Gesundheitsförderung aufweisen, durch solche Ausschreibungen erreicht werden und welche Faktoren die Bereitschaft zur Beteiligung beeinflussen. Methoden Es werden Bevölkerungsdaten und sozioökonomische Deprivationsdaten von (n = 171) Kommunen aus drei Gruppen (teilnehmende/interessierte Kommunen und deprivierte Vergleichskommunen) verglichen. Durch eine systematische Internetrecherche werden die Gesundheitsförderungsaktivitäten ausgewählter Kommunen erhoben. Barrieren und Förderfaktoren für die Umsetzung der Projekte werden mittels einer Dokumentenanalyse erfasst. Ergebnisse Die teilnehmenden und interessierten Kommunen weisen höhere Einwohnerzahlen und geringere Deprivationswerte als der Durchschnitt der Kommunen in Bayern auf und stellen mehr Angebote der Gesundheitsförderung bereit als deprivierte Vergleichskommunen. Großen Einfluss auf die Teilnahme an den Projekten haben finanzielle Faktoren, politische Unterstützung und engagierte Personen. Diskussion Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie deuten auf ein Präventionsdilemma auf kommunaler Ebene hin. Um gesundheitlichen Ungleichheiten zwischen Kommunen vorzubeugen, sollten benachteiligte Kommunen in die Gestaltung von Förderprogrammen einbezogen werden, um diese Programme an deren Bedürfnisse anzupassen.

ZusammenfassungDer vorliegende Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Bewegungsförderung bei Menschen in schwierigen Lebenslagen und den besonderen Herausforderungen, die an eine erfolgreiche Umsetzung entsprechender Programme und Interventionen für diese Personengruppen gestellt werden. Anhand zweier Praxisbeispiele wird aufgezeigt, wie Bewegungsförderung für schwer erreichbare Adressat*innen durch partizipative Ansätze gelingen kann. Das BIG-Projekt (Bewegung als Investition in Gesundheit) bietet einen Ansatz für Frauen in schwierigen Lebenslagen. Bei GESTALT (GEhen, Spielen und Tanzen Als Lebenslange Tätigkeiten), einem Bewegungsprogramm zur Demenzprävention, werden Personen ab 60 Jahren adressiert, die bislang nur unzureichend oder gar nicht körperlich aktiv sind. Damit solche Projekte auf möglichst viele neue Kommunen übertragen werden können, muss die bisherige enge wissenschaftliche Begleitung durch mehr Verantwortung und Eigenständigkeit in den Kommunen ersetzt werden. Für die Praxis der Bewegungsförderung bedeutet dies, dass eine Erweiterung von Ausbildungsinhalten in Betracht gezogen werden sollte, um die notwendigen Kompetenzen und Strategien zu vermitteln, damit schwierige Zielgruppen adäquat erreicht werden.

Background Inactivity in children and adolescents is a global issue requiring interventions that target different domains of physical activity, such as active transport. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence, historical trends and socio-demographic correlates of active commuting to school (ACS) in a nationwide sample of girls and boys from Germany. Methods Data of commuting behaviour and socio-demographic factors were collected, covering three measurement points from 2003 to 2017. The MoMo Study derived its data from a representative sample of children and adolescents aged 4–17 years who answered a questionnaire (N = 11 387). Statistically significant differences between Baseline, Wave 1 and Wave 2 were determined via 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for complex samples. Results Overall, ACS decreased from 84.4% at the first measurement point to 78.3% in the third measurement point. The proportion of cases in which children opted for passive modes of commuting increased predominantly in those aged 4–5 years, in children with a low-to-medium socio-economic status, and in children residing in small- or medium-sized towns. No gender differences were found in active commuting. The results of multinomial logistic regression identified age, migration background and residential area as correlates of walking for boys. For girls, the likelihood of walking, cycling and taking public transport instead of opting for motorized transport increased with age. Conclusions Intervention programmes to increase active transport in children and adolescents should target different age groups and also consider parental influence in determining the child’s choice of transport mode.

Zusammenfassung Hintergrund In Deutschland und anderen Industrienationen bewegen sich viele Kinder nicht ausreichend und leiden zunehmend an Folgeerkrankungen des Bewegungsmangels. Aktive Schulwege sind ein relevantes Setting der körperlichen Aktivität und stellen einen wichtigen Ansatzpunkt für Interventionen zur Bewegungsförderung im Grundschulalter dar. Ziel des Beitrags Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über den Stand der Forschung zu aktiven Schulwegen von Grundschulkindern. Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf der Relevanz dieses Phänomens aus Perspektive der Gesundheitsforschung in Deutschland. Methoden Die Vorstellung des Forschungsstands erfolgt als narrativer Review, der nationale und internationale Studien, die mittels Literaturrecherche identifiziert und zusammengefasst wurden, einschließt. Es werden die Erfassungsmethoden, Prävalenzen und historischen Trends, Befunde über Gesundheitseffekte und Einflussfaktoren von aktiver Mobilität sowie Interventionsprogramme zur Steigerung aktiver Schulwege thematisiert. Ergebnisse Aktuelle Studien berichten, dass zwischen 47% und 81% der Grundschulkinder in Deutschland aktiv den Schulweg zurücklegen. Aktive Schulwege sind sowohl mit einigen Gesundheitsparametern als auch mit dem Gesamtumfang der körperlichen Aktivität positiv korreliert. Insbesondere die Distanz zur Schule und soziale Faktoren, wie das elterliche Unterstützungsverhalten und Sicherheitsbedenken, sind mit aktiven Schulwegen assoziiert. Es liegen praxisorientierte Publikationen zu Interventionsansätzen zur Förderung aktiver Schulwege an deutschen Grundschulen (wie z. B. „Walking-school-bus-Maßnahmen“) vor, die jedoch kaum wissenschaftlich evaluiert wurden. Schlussfolgerung Zur Bewegungsförderung im Grundschulalter sollten Maßnahmen zur Förderung aktiver Schulwege entwickeln und wissenschaftlich evaluiert werden. Background In Germany and other industrial countries, many children are not physically active enough and suffer increasingly from secondary diseases caused by a lack of activity. Active commuting to school is a relevant domain of physical activity and presents an important starting point for interventions to promote physical activity in primary school-age. Objective The article provides an overview of current research on active commuting to school in primary school children and focuses on the relevance of the phenomenon from the perspective of health research in Germany. Methods The presentation of the state of research is based on a narrative review that includes national and international literature which has been identified by a literature search and has been summarized. Measurement methods, prevalence and historical trends, findings on health effects and influencing factors as well as intervention programmes to increase active commuting to school at primary school-age are discussed. Results Recent studies showed, that between 47% and 81% of primary school children in Germany actively commute to school. Active commuting is positively associated with both numerous health parameters and the level of overall physical activity. In particular, the distance to school and social factors, such as parental support and safety concerns, are associated with the extent of active commuting to school. Some practically orientated publications on interventions to promote active commuting at German primary schools (such as “walking school bus” programs) are available, but have hardly been scientifically evaluated. Conclusion In order to promote physical activity at primary school-age, interventions to promote active commuting to school should be developed and scientifically evaluated.

Background: Regular physical activity during childhood and adolescence is associated with health benefits. Consequently, numerous health promotion programs for children and adolescents emphasize the enhancement of physical activity. However, the ActivityStat hypothesis states that increases in physical activity in one domain are compensated for by decreasing physical activity in another domain. Currently, little is known about how physical activity varies in children and adolescents within intervals of one and multiple days. Objectives: This systematic review provides an overview of studies that analyze changes in (overall) physical activity, which are assessed with objective measurements, or compensatory mechanisms caused by increases or decreases in physical activity in a specific domain in children and adolescents.Methods: A systematic search of electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SportDiscus) was performed with a priori defined inclusion criteria. Two independent researchers screened the literature and identified and rated the methodological quality of the studies. Results: A total of 77 peer-reviewed articles were included that analyze compensatory mechanisms with multiple methodological approaches. Of 40,829 participants, 16,265 indicated compensation associated with physical activity. Subgroup analyses separated by study design, participants, measurement instrument, physical activity context, and intervention duration also showed mixed results toward indication of compensation. Quality assessment of the included studies revealed high quality (mean = 0.866).Conclusion: This review provides inconclusive results about compensation in relation to physical activity. A trend toward increased compensation in interventional studies and in interventions of longer duration can be observed.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are a class of anti-diabetic agents that block the reabsorption of glucose in the proximal convoluted tubule of the nephron, thereby contributing to glycosuria and lowering blood glucose levels. SGLT2 inhibitors have been associated with improved cardiovascular outcomes in patients with diabetes, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalizations for heart failure. Recently, DAPA-HF and EMPEROR REDUCED trials showed the beneficial cardiovascular effect of SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with heart failure with consistently reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) regardless of the presence of diabetes. Moreover, some exploratory studies suggested that these drugs improve Left Ventricular (LV) systolic function and oppose LV adverse remodeling in patients with HFrEF. However, the exact mechanisms that mediated for this benefit are not fully understood. Beyond glycemic control, enhanced natriuresis, increased erythropoiesis, improved endothelial function and changes in myocardial metabolism may all play an active role in SGLT2 inhibitors’ cardiovascular benefits. A deep understanding of the pathophysiological interplay is key to define which HF phenotype could benefit more from SGLT2 inhibitors. Current evidence on the comparison of different HF etiologies is limited to posthoc subgroup analysis of DAPA-HF and EMPEROR-REDUCED, which showed similar outcomes in patients with or without ischemic HF. On the other hand, in earlier studies of patients suffering from diabetes, rates of classic ischemic endpoints, such as myocardial infarction, stroke or coronary revascularization, did not differ between patients treated with SGLT2 inhibitors or placebo. The aim of this review is to discuss whether SGLT2 inhibitors may improve prognosis in patients with ischemic HF, not only in terms of reducing re-hospitalizations and improving LV function but also by limiting coronary artery disease progression and ischemic burden. © 2022 Bentham Science Publishers.

Scaling up community-based participatory research (CBPR) remains challenging. This case-study reports on how, and under which conditions, a CBPR project aiming at promoting exercise among socially disadvantaged women (BIG) scaled up at four project sites. As part of BIG, researchers support city administrations in implementing a participatory project to reach socially disadvantaged women for exercise. The case study was conducted in winter 2020 in southern Germany and is based on a co-creative process involving city administrators and researchers. Following Kohl and Cooley’s scaling up dimensions, scaling up BIG was investigated at the four sites using a mixed-method approach. Course registrations and offers were analysed, and qualitative interviews (n = 4) with administrative staff members were conducted and analysed using content analysis. The geographical coverage of exercise classes, the addressed groups, and the utilisation of participatory methods by city administrations are described. All four sites managed to scale-up project activities. Three of the four sites reported that further growth of the project was no longer possible due to limited resources. All sites attempted to reach a larger number of, and more diverse, women. One site managed to scale-up the use of participatory methods within the city administration. The following important facilitators for scaling up CBPR projects were reported: advertisements tailored to the needs of the addressed women, utilising participatory approaches, and equipping project coordinators with sufficient resources.

One of the most important factors of maintaining regular and long-term physical activity is the enjoyment an individual experiences from engaging in the activity. If basic psychological needs are fulfilled, the likelihood that someone enjoys being physically active increases. However, it is unclear whether the impact of psychological needs is influenced by personality. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate if personality traits (BIG 5) moderate the relationships between basic psychological needs and enjoyment of physical activity. We conducted an online survey with N = 399 participants (M age = 35.82 years). Physical activity enjoyment, basic psychological needs (autonomy, perceived competence, social relatedness), and the BIG 5 were assessed. Analyses show that personality moderates the relationships between psychological needs and enjoyment of physical activity: Extraversion moderates the relationship between social relatedness and enjoyment, conscientiousness and neuroticism moderate the relationship between perceived competence and enjoyment, and agreeableness, but not openness, moderates the relationship between autonomy and enjoyment. Our findings suggest that the BIG 5 play an important role regarding the experience of physical activity enjoyment. Therefore, personality should be considered to design interventions more tailored to individual needs in order to promote enjoyment of physical activity effectively.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is a major challenge for societies and governments around the world that severely affects all aspects of health promotion. This study assesses the potential influence of the first wave of the pandemic on national physical activity promotion policy in the European Union (EU). Methods: Data were collected using an online survey among members of the EU Physical Activity Focal Point Network, which consists of government officials from all EU member states. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected physical activity promotion across the EU. In particular, experts indicated that it has negatively impacted opportunities for physical activity in their countries. There have, however, been positive effects of the crisis on public awareness of physical activity. While almost all countries were able to issue physical activity recommendations during quarantine, opinions varied regarding the overall impact of the pandemic on governmental capacities for physical activity promotion and policy. Conclusions: This study shows that the COVID-19 crisis has had both negative and positive effects on physical activity promotion in the EU. The positive experiences reported by some members of the Focal Point Network may assist other countries in identifying potential policy windows and strategies for the ongoing pandemic.

Depending on the region and urbanization level, the rate of cycling to school in Germany varies largely. The influence of distance from home to school, educational level, the school&rsquo, s region, and parents&rsquo, socio-demographic characteristics on cycling to secondary school in Germany is unclear. Therefore, this study analyzed students&rsquo, and parents&rsquo, socio-demographic correlates of cycling to school, including separate analyses by gender, among 12- to 15-year-olds attending different (sub)urban schools in Southern Germany. In 2019, 121 students (girls: 40.5%, boys: 59.5%) aged 13.1 &plusmn, 0.9 and 42 parents (mothers: 81%, fathers: 19%) aged 47.8 &plusmn, 5.5 participated. Students completed a self-report questionnaire, parents completed a self- and proxy-report questionnaire. In total, between 61.7% and 67.5% of students sometimes cycled to school. Binary logistic regressions revealed that being a girl, increasing age, attending an intermediate educational level combined with a suburban school region (small or medium-sized town), increasing distance from home to school, and having parents who did not cycle to work led to declining odds of cycling to school. Many 12- to 15-year-olds sometimes cycled to school in (sub)urban school regions in Southern Germany. As several socio-demographic characteristics correlated with cycling to school, this should be considered when developing a future school-based bicycle intervention.

Background The primary symptoms of restless legs syndrome (RLS) are sleep onset insomnia and difficulty to maintain sleep. Previous studies have shown that regular physical activity can reduce the risk of developing RLS. However, the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality parameters in individuals suffering from RLS has not yet been investigated by applying accelerometry. Thus, the present study investigates the impact of physical activity (measuring both intensity levels and duration of physical activity) during the day (7–12 h, 12–18 h, 18–23 h) on sleep quality in patients suffering from idiopathic RLS by applying a real-time approach. Methods In a sample of 47 participants suffering from idiopathic RLS, physical activity and sleep quality were measured over one week using accelerometers. For data analysis, physical activity levels and step counts during three periods of the day (morning, afternoon, evening) were correlated with sleep quality parameters of the subsequent night. Results This observational study revealed that in most instances physical activity was not correlated with sleep parameters (two exceptions exist: steps taken in the morning were negatively correlated with periodic leg movements during sleep, and physical activity in the evening was negatively correlated with total sleep time). The physical activity levels of the participants in this study, however, were unexpectedly high compared to population-level data and variance in physical activity was low. The average activity was 13,817 (SD = 4086) steps and 347 (SD = 117) minutes of moderate physical activity per day in females, and 10,636 (SD = 3748) steps and 269 (SD = 69) minutes of moderate physical activity in males, respectively. Participants did not engage in any vigorous physical activity. Conclusions Further interventional studies are needed to investigate the daily effects of different intensities of physical activity on RLS symptoms.

Introduction Assuming that motivation is the key to initiate and sustain beneficial health behaviors, the aim of this systematic review was to analyze the effects of school-based physical activity interventions on a variety of motivational outcomes towards PA in school-aged children and adolescents. Methods A comprehensive literature search was carried out in six electronic databases to identify randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental trials examining the effects of PA interventions implemented during the regular school day, e.g., during physical education lessons or lunch breaks. Primary outcomes of interest were students' motivation, basic psychological needs, goal orientation, enjoyment, and motivational teaching climate in physical education. Meta-analyses were conducted for these outcomes using Comprehensive Meta-analysis software. Secondarily, intervention effects on students' PA behaviors were examined and the findings summarized narratively. Methodological quality of studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias for randomized trials; certainty of evidence on outcome level was evaluated using the GRADE approach. Results In total, 57 studies carried out between 2001 and 2018 were included in this review. Sixteen individual meta-analyses were performed and revealed significant pooled effects for the outcomes enjoyment (g = 0.310), perceived autonomy (g = 0.152), identified regulation (g = 0.378), intrinsic motivation (g = 0.419), self-determination index (g = 0.672), task/mastery climate (g = 0.254), ego/performance climate (g = −0.438), autonomy supportive climate (g = 0.262), task goal orientation (g = 1.370), ego goal orientation (g = −0.188). The narrative data synthesis indicated an increase in students' PA behavior. The overall risk of bias was high across all studies and certainty of evidence of meta-analyzed outcomes ranged from very low to moderate. Moderate certainty of evidence was found for ego/performance climate and ego goal orientation. Conclusions: Meta-analyses suggest that school-based PA interventions may be effective in increasing a variety of motivational outcomes. However, the certainty of evidence was limited in the majority of outcomes. This systematic review aims to evaluate the extent of sex/gender consideration and effectiveness of interventions designed to reduce sedentary behaviour (SB). We searched for randomised or non-randomised controlled trials with the outcome SB and a sex/gender analysis in eleven electronic databases. Sixty-seven studies were included. Sex/gender considerations were qualitatively rated. Sex/gender was reported separately in 44.8% of studies, 14.9% of studies conducted a sex/gender interaction analysis, and 19.4% enrolled either girls or boys. SB was significantly reduced for girls in 16.4%, for boys in 11.9% and for both in 13.4%. No sex/gender intervention effect was found in 38.8%. According to the qualitative rating, studies without significant sex/gender effects reached “detailed” rating twice as often as studies finding a significant intervention effect for either girls or boys, or both. Overall, no clear pattern according to the qualitative rating and in terms of intervention effectiveness can be drawn. The results reveal a lack of sufficient sex/gender information in intervention planning and delivery. Further research should consider analysing sex/gender intervention effects as well as consider sex/gender inclusive intervention planning and delivery.

Kinder in Deutschland und anderen Industrienationen bewegen sich nicht ausreichend und leiden zunehmend an Folgeerkrankungen des Bewegungsmangels. Obwohl die eigenstandige Mobilitat als ein wichtiger Ansatzpunkt fur die Bewegungsforderung im Kindesalter identifiziert wurde, ist dieses Phanomen bisher in der deutschsprachigen Gesundheitsforschung kaum beachtet worden. Der Beitrag gibt einen Uberblick uber den Stand der Forschung zur eigenstandigen Mobilitat von Kindern und legt dabei den Fokus auf die Relevanz des Phanomens fur die Gesundheitsforschung im deutschsprachigen Raum. Die Vorstellung des Forschungsstands erfolgt als narrativer Review, der nationale und internationale Studien einschliest, die mittels Literaturrecherche identifiziert und selektiv zusammengefasst wurden. Es werden die Definition, Indikatoren, Pravalenzen und historische Trends sowie Befunde uber Gesundheitseffekte und Einflussfaktoren der eigenstandigen Mobilitat von Kindern thematisiert. Die eigenstandige Mobilitat von Kindern ist mit einigen Gesundheitsparametern positiv assoziiert. Kohortenstudien deuten jedoch darauf hin, dass die eigenstandige Mobilitat von Kindern weltweit zuruckgeht, wobei die Pravalenz der eigenstandigen Mobilitat unterschiedlicher Nationen sich stark unterscheidet. Insbesondere die Eltern nehmen eine wichtige Rolle fur den Grad der eigenstandigen Mobilitat ihres Kindes ein. Aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum liegen keine gesundheitswissenschaftlichen Studien zur eigenstandigen Mobilitat vor. Die Gesundheitsforschung sollte zur Bewegungsforderung im Kindesalter neben strukturierten Sportaktivitaten auch freie, unstrukturierte Bewegungsaktivitaten wie die eigenstandige Mobilitat mit einschliesen.

Background Children’s independent mobility (CIM) is an important contributor to physical activity and health in children. However, in the last 20 years CIM has significantly decreased. To develop effective intervention programs to promote CIM, the impact of the environment on CIM must be identified. This review seeks to provide an overview of sex/gender-specific socio-ecological correlates of CIM. Methods A systematic literature search of five databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus, Medline, Web of Science) was conducted with a priori defined eligibility criteria and identified 1838 potential articles published between January 1990 and November 2017. Two independent reviewers screened the literature and identified and rated methodological quality of the studies. Related factors of CIM were summarized separately for CIM license (parental permission to travel independently) and CIM destination (destinations to which a child travels independently), and separately for boys and girls using a semi-quantitative method. Results Twenty-seven peer-reviewed journal articles were identified which examined the relationship between the social and physical environment and CIM. Only seven studies reported results divided by sex/gender. Most associations between the environment and CIM were found in the expected direction (positive or negative) or not associated at all. The social environment seemed to be more influential for ensuring CIM than the physical environment. Neighborhood safety, fear of crime and stranger, parental support, and perception of traffic were important social environmental factors influencing CIM, while car ownership, distance, and neighborhood design were relevant physical environmental attributes. Few studies examined sex/gender-related environmental correlates of independent mobility, and those findings were inconsistent. Conclusion The findings of this systematic review serve as suggestions for intervention programs to increase CIM and to identify future directions in research. To establish a robust comprehension of the impact of the social and physical environment on CIM, further sex/gender-sensitive studies using comparable measurements for CIM and environmental correlates are needed. Aim Being outdoors is one of the strongest correlates of physical activity in children. Playgrounds are spaces especially designed to enable and foster physical activity in children. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the spatial features of public playgrounds and the usage and physical activity levels of children playing in them. Subjects and methods A quantitative, observational study was conducted of ten playgrounds in one district of a middle-sized town in Germany. Playground spatial features were captured using an audit instrument and the playground manual of the town. Playground usage and physical activity levels of children were assessed using a modified version of the System for Observing Play and Leisure Activity in Youth. Negative binomial models were used to analyze the count data. Results The number of children using the playgrounds and the number of children actively playing in them were higher in those with more varied facilities and without naturalness. Girls played more actively in playgrounds without multi-purpose areas. Cleanliness, esthetics, play facility quality, division of functional areas and playground size were not related to any outcome variable. Conclusion Playground spatial features are related to playground usage and activity levels of the children in the playgrounds. Playgrounds should offer a wide variety of play facilities and provide spaces for diverse play activities to respond to the needs of large numbers of different children and to provide activity-friendly areas enabling their healthy development.

Observational and experimental studies show that leisure time sporting activity (LTSA) is associated with higher well-being. However, scholars often seem to assume that 1) LTSA fosters “general” life satisfaction, thereby ignoring effects on domain satisfaction; 2) the effect of LTSA on well-being is linear and independent of a person’s general activity level; 3) the amount of LTSA is more important than the repertoire of LTSA, i.e. the number of different activities; 4) all kinds of LTSA are equal in their effects, irrespective of spatial and organisational context conditions. Using data from the German SALLSA-Study (“Sport, Active Lifestyle and Life Satisfaction”), a large-scale CAWI-Survey (N = 1008) representing the population ≥ 14 years, the paper takes a closer look on these assumptions. Findings demonstrate that LTSA is associated with general life satisfaction and domain-specific satisfaction (concerning relationships, appearance, leisure, work and health), but that the relationship is most pronounced for leisure satisfaction. Associations of sport with life satisfaction, leisure satisfaction and subjective health are non-linear, approaching an injection point from which on additional LTSA is no longer beneficial. Moreover, findings lend support to the notion that diversity in LTSA matters, as individuals with higher variation in sports activities are more satisfied. Finally, results with regard to spatial and organizational context suggest that outdoor sports and club-organized sports have additional benefits.

Measures to slow down the spread of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 have had an impact on the daily life and physical activity (PA) of many people. Nevertheless, in Germany, mitigation policies and incidence values vary widely across the federal states (Länder). Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate regional differences in PA during the coronavirus pandemic. This study is based on the SPOVID project (Examining physical activity and sports behavior in the face of COVID-19 pandemic: a social inequality perspective) that incorporates a large-scale, representative cross-sectional survey representing the German population (≥14 years). Based on the survey that took place in October 2020 (N = 1477), we investigated the relationships between the COVID-19 incidence values as well as the mitigation policies across the federal states in Germany and changes in PA. Pearson correlations indicated a strong negative relationship between PA change and 7-day incidence values (r = −0.688 **, p = 0.009) and a moderate negative relationship between PA changes and an index of mitigation policies (r = −0.444, p = 0.112). Higher 7-day incidence values and stricter mitigation policies were associated with a stronger decline in PA levels. Therefore, it is important to support people to stay active even if there are restrictions. In particular, in federal states and regions with high incidences and stricter mitigation policies, measures to promote health-enhancing PA are necessary.

The aim of this systematic review was to examine where physical activity (PA) takes place and how much time children, adolescents and adults spend being physically active within the identified locations. A systematic literature search was carried out in five electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, PsycInfo, Scopus). For inclusion, primary studies had to identify locations of PA using device-based or self-report tools, whereas minutes of PA had to be examined using device-based tools only. Thirty-two studies were included, methodological quality and sex/gender sensitivity of the studies were assessed. The narrative data synthesis revealed that the highest average amount of daily moderate-to-vigorous PA was found in home and recreational locations, followed by school and neighborhood locations. In adults, highest average amount of daily moderate-to-vigorous PA was found in neighborhood and home locations followed by workplace and recreational locations. The majority of studies had a low risk of bias in four out of six domains; eight studies reported significant sex/gender differences in location-based PA. The results indicate that different locations are used for PA to a varying degree across the lifespan. Future research on the promotion of PA should focus on location-specific design features that encourage children, adolescents and adults to be physically active.

This study analyses the effects of regular physical education at school on academic achievements, non-cognitive skills, motor skills, physical activity, and health. It is based on a very informative data set, the German Motorik-Modul, and identifies the effect by using variation in the required numbers of physical education lessons across German federal states. The results suggest improvements in academic achievements. Boys’ non-cognitive skills are adversely affected driven by increased peer relation problems. For girls, the results show improvements in motor skills and increased extra-curricular physical activities. Generally, we find no statistically significant effects on health parameters.

Questionnaires to assess physical activity (PA) have served and continue to serve important purposes in both research and practical application as they capture the self-reported aggregation of the individual which is at times complemented with device-based measures. This paper presents an expert consensus on best practices and future directions regarding the use of PA questionnaires (PAQ). The expert panel discussions that informed this manuscript took place during the 2nd International Workshop of the Center for the Assessment of Physical Activity (CAPA), held in Karlsruhe, Germany in July of 2019. Practically, we recommend to identify already existing and published PAQs in order to address a specific research question. To facilitate this, a decision framework (decision guide aide) for selecting a PAQ, consisting of purpose, construct, measurement unit, recall period, population, setting, measurement quality, feasibility/ease of use, and resources is presented. These best practices are discussed to provide some standardization for the field. With regard to future research on PAQs, continued efforts to improve validity, reliability, and sensitivity to change; consider the recall period; incorporate information on or adapt for a specific cultural/ethnic/environmental context; and strategically combine PAQ with other PA assessment methods capitalizing on the advancement of technology, are needed. These recommended future directions are outlined in order to motivate and challenge researchers to continually improve the field of PAQ research.

Physical inactivity is a major but modifiable risk factor for morbidity and mortality. Regular physical activity has preventive and therapeutic effects on numerous diseases including neurological disorders. Therefore, it is desirable that physicians motivate their patients to increase their physical and sports activities and that they help them to overcome barriers to exercising. The present study is a survey of neurologists who are members of the German Neurological Society with their own practices; they were asked whether they advised their patients on the benefits of physical activity. Details on physician counseling on physical activity were obtained, such as the frequency of counseling, the neurological disorders considered by the practitioners to be worth the effort of counseling, and the barriers to exercise on the part of patients. More than 80 % of the participants who responded to the survey stated that they frequently provide their patients with advice on the preventive and therapeutic aspects of physical activity. Almost all of them recommended endurance sports; this was followed by Far Eastern types of sport such as tai chi or yoga (70 % of all physicians who advice sports activities). The frequency of counseling about physical activity significantly correlated to the physician's own sports activity. Frequency of counseling was reduced if the physician assessed the patients to be incapable of adopting and maintaining a lifestyle of habitual physical activity. Lack of time as well as an insufficient reimbursement of the counseling, however, did not significantly influence the frequency of counseling. The physician's own sports activity matched that of individuals with similar social status. Thus, a selection bias does not seem to be of importance regarding the results of the survey. However, since only 169 of the 784 invited neurologists (21.6 %) responded to the questionnaire, the representativeness of the survey may be limited. Counseling about physical activity seems to be an essential part of consultations in neurological practices.

Objective: Exercise has attracted attention as a potential helpful intervention in children with ADHD. Effects are emphasized on cognition, social-emotional, and motor development. Method: A systematic literature search was conducted using the electronic databases Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and ERIC to analyze the efficacy of different types of exercise interventions in children and adolescents with ADHD. Seven studies examining the acute and 14 studies examining the long-term effects were included. Results: The largest effects were reported for mixed exercise programs on ADHD symptomatology and fine motor precision. However, because of the large differences in the study designs, the comparability is limited. Conclusion: At this time, no evidence-based recommendation can be formulated regarding frequency, intensity, or duration of exercise. Nevertheless, some first trends regarding the effects of certain types of exercise can be identified. When focusing on long-term health benefits in children and adolescents with ADHD, qualitative exercise characteristics might play an important role.
