Immigrant populations in the United States continue to receive inadequate attention in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery despite the increasing frequency and intensity of disasters and catastrophic events. This analysis documents the experiences and challenges of Vietnamese Americans in the Houston metropolitan area after 2017 Hurricane Harvey. Findings highlight diverse experiences and unequal successes and challenges among this population. It is critical for planners and emergency managers to take into account such recovery asymmetries to better prepare for and plan their responses to natural disasters and the current or future pandemics.

Microplastics contaminate environments worldwide and are ingested by numerous species, whose health is affected in multiple ways. A key dimension of health that may be affected is the gut microbiome, but these effects are relatively unexplored. Here, we investigated if microplastics are associated with changes in proventricular and cloacal microbiomes in two seabird species that chronically ingest microplastics: northern fulmars and Cory’s shearwaters. The amount of microplastics in the gut was significantly correlated with gut microbial diversity and composition: microplastics were associated with decreases in commensal microbiota and increases in (zoonotic) pathogens and antibiotic-resistant and plastic-degrading microbes. These results illustrate that environmentally relevant microplastic concentrations and mixtures are associated with changes in gut microbiomes in wild seabirds.

COVID-19 vaccinations are now recommended in the United States (U.S.) for children ≥ 6 months old. However, pediatric vaccination rates remain low, particularly in the Hispanic/Latinx population.Using the 4C vaccine hesitancy framework (calculation, complacency, confidence, convenience), we examined parental attitudes in the emergency department (ED) towards COVID-19 vaccination, identified dimensions of parental vaccine hesitancy, and assessed parental willingness to have their child receive the COVID-19 vaccine.As part of a larger multi-methods study examining influenza vaccine hesitancy, we conducted interviews that included questions about COVID-19 vaccine authorization for children. We used directed content analysis to extract qualitative themes from 3 groups of parents in the ED: Hispanic/Latinx Spanish speaking (HS), Hispanic/Latinx English speaking (HE), non-Hispanic/non-Latinx White English speaking (WE). Themes were triangulated with the Parent Attitudes about Childhood Vaccines (PACV) survey, where higher scores indicate increased vaccine hesitancy.Factors influencing vaccine hesitancy were mapped to the 4C framework from 58 sets of interviews and PACVs. HE and HS parents, compared to WE parents, had less knowledge about COVID-19 and its vaccine, and more beliefs in COVID-19 vaccine myths. However, both HS and HE parent groups were more inclined to endorse COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness as a reason to have their children vaccinated. HS parents felt that COVID-19 increased their fear of illnesses in general and were worried about confusing COVID-19 with other infections. Median PACV scores of HS (Mdn = 20) and HE (Mdn = 20) parent groups were higher than of WE parents (Mdn = 10), but parental willingness to have their child receive COVID-19 vaccination was similar across groups.Higher COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among HS and HE parents compared to WE parents may be attributed to insufficient knowledge about COVID-19, its vaccine, along with COVID-19 vaccine myths. Efforts to provide targeted vaccine education to different populations is warranted.

Introduction:The majority of pediatric medications are dosed according to weight and therefore accurate weight assessment is essential. However, this can be difficult in the unpredictable and peripatetic prehospital care setting, and medication errors are common. The Handtevy method and the Broselow tape are two systems designed to guide Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers in both pediatric patient weight estimation and medication dosing. The accuracy of the Handtevy method of weight estimation as practiced in the field by EMS has not been previously examined.Study Objective:The primary objective of this study was to examine the field performance of the Handtevy method and the Broselow tape with respect to prehospital patient weight estimation.Methods:This was a retrospective chart review of trauma and non-trauma patients transported by EMS to the emergency department (ED) of a quaternary care children’s hospital from January 1, 2021 through June 30, 2021. Demographic data, ED visit information, prehospital weight estimation, and medication dosing were collected and analyzed. Scale-based weight from the ED was used as the standard for comparison.Results:A total of 509 patients Conclusion:This study demonstrated no statistically significant difference between the use of the Handtevy or Broselow methods with respect to prehospital weight estimation. While further research is necessary, these results suggest similar field performance of the Broselow and Handtevy methods.

We document a novel strategic motive for family business groups to utilize their internal capital markets (ICMs) during financial crises. We find that crisis-period group ICM activity is targeted toward exerting product market dominance over standalone rivals. Groups make significant post-crisis gains in market share that are concentrated among affiliates (and industry segments within affiliates) operating in highly competitive product markets, where capturing such gains is difficult in normal times. These patterns are observed only in emerging markets, suggesting that ICMs enable groups to exploit crises to realize long-term competitive advantages only when rivals face chronic financing frictions.

Heavy metals recovery from Printed Circuit Boards industrial wastewater is crucial because of its cost effectiveness and environmental friendliness. In this study, a copper recovery route combining the sequential processes of acid leaching and LIX 984N extracting with an electrowinning technique from Printed Circuit Boards production’s sludge was performed. The used residual sludge was originated from Hanoi Urban Environment One Member Limited Company (URENCO). The extracted solution from the printed circuit boards waste sludge containing a high copper concentration of 19.2 g/L and a small amount of iron (0.575 ppm) was used as electrolyte for the subsequent electrolysis process. By using a simulation model for multi-step current electrolysis, the reasonable current densities for an electrolysis time interval of 30 minutes were determined, to optimize the specific consumption energy for the copper recovery. The mathematical simulation model was built to calculate the important parameters of this process.

We examined the effect of the extracellular bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) 2 and 7, which are up-regulated in the prostate adenocarcinomas of the conditional Pten deletion mouse model, on primary cultures of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF) derived from these tumors. In the CAF, we show that BMP2 or BMP7, but not transforming growth factor β-1, can strikingly stimulate secretion of stromal cell–derived factor-1 (SDF-1), also known as CXCL12. The CAF cells express type I and type II BMP receptors as well as the receptor for SDF-1, CXCR4. SDF-1 activation is associated with BMP-induced Smad phosphorylation, and the stimulatory effect is blocked by BMP antagonist, noggin. The findings that BMP treatment can increase SDF-1 pre-mRNA levels in a time-dependent manner and actinomycin D treatment can abolish stimulatory effect of BMP suggest a transcriptional modulation of SDF-1 by BMP signaling. Using a human microvascular endothelial cell line, we show that SDF-1 present in the conditioned medium from the stimulated CAF can significantly induce tube formation, an effect relating to angiogenic function. Furthermore, we found that BMP2 can also protect the CAF from serum starvation–induced apoptosis independent of SDF-1, implying that BMP may induce other factors to sustain the survival of these cells. In short, this report establishes a novel BMP-SDF-1 axis in the prostate tumor along with a new prosurvival effect of BMP that when considered together with our previously described oncogenic properties of BMP indicate a circuitry for heterotypic cell interactions potentially critical in prostate cancer. We reported earlier that exposure to exogenous bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) could strongly inhibit serum starvation–induced apoptosis to C4-2B cell line, a variant of the LNCaP human prostate cancer cell line with propensity for bone metastasis. Whereas serum starvation suppressed the expression of survivin, a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein family, its expression was sustained in the presence of BMP7. In this study, we present evidence that BMP7 exposure up-regulated survivin promoter activity, an effect that was associated with activation of Smad, and could be repressed by dominant-negative Smad5. Additionally, serum starvation–induced suppression of c-jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) activity in C4-2B cells could be mostly restored by BMP7, and a JNK inhibitor could counteract the antiapoptotic effect of BMP7, without a significant effect on the level of survivin expression. Thus, we identified JNK pathway as another signaling mode for the antiapoptotic function of BMP7. To test the effect of endogenous up-regulation of BMP7, we genetically modulated the C4-2B cell line to overexpress BMP7 protein. Not only was this altered cell line resistant to serum starvation–induced apoptosis but it also exhibited patterns of Smad activation, survivin up-regulation, and JNK activation similar to those of the parental C4-2B cells exposed to exogenous BMP7. Consistent with these in vitro findings of BMP7 action, we acquired correlative results of Smad activation, survivin expression, and JNK activation in the progression of prostate cancer in the conditional Pten deletion mouse model, in which we first obtained the evidence of BMP7 overexpression. The brown macroalgae of the species Rugulopteryx okamurae has reached European waters and the Strait of Gibraltar as an invasive species. The proliferation and colonization of the species in subtidal and intertidal zones of these regions imposes significant threats to local ecosystems and additionally represents a significant socioeconomic burden related to the large amounts of biomass accumulated as waste. As a way to minimize the effects caused by the accumulation of algae biomass, investigations have been made to employ this biomass as a raw material in value-added products or technologies. The present review explores the potential uses of R. okamurae, focusing on its impact for biogas production, composting, bioplastic and pharmaceutical purposes, with potential anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and α-glucosity inhibitory activities being highlighted. Ri chicken is the most popular backyard chicken breed in Vietnam, but little is known about the growth curve of this breed. This study compared the performances of models with three parameters (Gompertz, Brody, and Logistic) and models containing four parameters (Richards, Bridges, and Janoschek) for describing the growth of Ri chicken. The bodyweight of Ri chicken was recorded weekly from week 1 to week 19. Growth models were fitted using minpack.lm package in R software and Akaike’s information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used for model comparison. Based on these criteria, the models having four parameters showed better performance than the ones with three parameters, and the Richards model was the best one for males and females. The lowest and highest value of asymmetric weights (α) were obtained by Bridges and Brody models for each of sexes, respectively. Age and weight estimated by the Richard model were 8.46 and 7.51 weeks and 696.88 and 487.58 g for males and for females, respectively. Differences in the growth curves were observed between males and female chicken. Overall, the results suggested using the Richards model for describing the growth curve of Ri chickens. Further studies on the genetics and genomics of the obtained growth parameters are required before using them for the genetic improvement of Ri chickens. Resumo O frango Ri é a raça de frango de quintal mais popular do Vietnã, mas pouco se sabe sobre a curva de crescimento dessa raça. Este estudo comparou o desempenho de modelos com três parâmetros (Gompertz, Brody e Logistic) e modelos contendo quatro parâmetros (Richards, Bridges e Janoschek) para descrever o crescimento do frango Ri. O peso corporal do frango Ri foi registrado semanalmente da semana 1 à semana 19. Os modelos de crescimento foram ajustados usando o pacote minpack.lm no software R e o critério de informação de Akaike (AIC); critério de informação bayesiano (BIC) e erro quadrático médio (RMSE) foram usados para comparação de modelos. Com base nesses critérios, os modelos com quatro parâmetros apresentaram melhor desempenho do que os com três parâmetros, sendo o modelo de Richards o melhor para homens e mulheres. O menor e o maior valor dos pesos assimétricos (α) foram obtidos pelos modelos Bridges e Brody para cada um dos sexos, respectivamente. A idade e o peso estimados pelo modelo de Richard foram de 8,46 e 7,51 semanas e 696,88 e 487,58 g para homens e mulheres, respectivamente. Diferenças nas curvas de crescimento foram observadas entre frangos machos e fêmeas. No geral, os resultados sugeriram o uso do modelo de Richards para descrever a curva de crescimento de frangos Ri. Mais estudos sobre a genética e genômica dos parâmetros de crescimento obtidos são necessários antes de usá-los para o melhoramento genético de frangos Ri.

ImportancePediatric emergency department (ED) visits for mental health crises are increasing. Patients who frequently use the ED are of particular concern, as pediatric mental health ED visits are commonly repeat visits. Better understanding of trends and factors associated with mental health ED revisits is needed for optimal resource allocation and targeting of prevention efforts.ObjectiveTo describe trends in pediatric mental health ED visits and revisits and to determine factors associated with revisits.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsIn this cohort study, data were obtained from 38 US children’s hospital EDs in the Pediatric Health Information System between October 1, 2015, and February 29, 2020. The cohort included patients aged 3 to 17 years with a mental health ED visit.ExposuresCharacteristics of patients, encounters, hospitals, and communities.Main Outcomes and MeasuresThe primary outcome was a mental health ED revisit within 6 months of the index visit. Trends were assessed using cosinor analysis and factors associated with time to revisit using mixed-effects Cox proportional hazards regression.ResultsThere were 308 264 mental health ED visits from 217 865 unique patients, and 13.2% of patients had a mental health revisit within 6 months. Mental health visits increased by 8.0% annually (95% CI, 4.5%-11.4%), whereas all other ED visits increased by 1.5% annually (95% CI, 0.1%-2.9%). Factors associated with mental health ED revisits included psychiatric comorbidities, chemical restraint use, public insurance, higher area measures of child opportunity, and presence of an inpatient psychiatric unit at the presenting hospital. Patients with psychotic disorders (hazard ratio [HR], 1.42; 95% CI, 1.29-1.57), disruptive or impulse control disorders (HR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.30-1.42), and neurodevelopmental disorders (HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.14-1.30) were more likely to revisit. Patients with substance use disorders (HR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.55-0.66) were less likely to revisit.Conclusions and RelevanceMarkers of disease severity and health care access were associated with mental health revisits. Directing hospital and community interventions toward identified high-risk patients is needed to help mitigate recurrent mental health ED use and improve mental health care delivery.

Background Communication failures secondary to damaged infrastructure have caused difficulties in coordinating disaster responses. Two-way radios commonly serve as backup communication for hospitals. However, text messaging has become widely adopted in daily life and new technologies such as wireless mesh network (WMN) devices allow for text messaging independent of cellular towers, Wi-Fi networks, and electrical grids. Objective To examine the accuracy of communication using text-based messaging transmitted over WMN devices (TEXT-WMN) compared to voice transmitted over two-way radios (VOICE-TWR) in disaster simulations. Secondary outcomes were patient triage accuracy, perceived workload, and device preference. Methods 2 × 2 Latin square crossover design: 2 simulations (each involving 15 min of simulated hospital-wide disaster communication) by 2 modalities (TEXT-WMN and VOICE-TWR). Physicians were randomized to one of two sequences: VOICE-TWR first and TEXT-WMN second; or TEXT-WMN first and VOICE-TWR second. Analyses were conducted using linear mixed effects modeling. Results On average, communication accuracy significantly improved with TEXT-WMN compared to VOICE-TWR. Communication accuracy also significantly improved, on average, during the second simulation compared to the first. There was no significant change in triage accuracy with either TEXT-WMN or VOICE-TWR; however, triage accuracy significantly improved, on average, during the second simulation compared to the first. On average, perceived workload was significantly lower with TEXT-WMN compared to VOICE-TWR, and was also significantly lower during the second simulation compared to the first. Most participants preferred TEXT-WMN to VOICE-TWR. Conclusion TEXT-WMN technology may be more effective and less burdensome than VOICE-TWR in facilitating accurate communication during disasters.

In this paper, a low-cost prototype for humanoid robotic arm that is controlled by either voice, gesture or brain signals is introduced. The prototype consists of a robotic arm that can rotate around a vertical axis and a hand with five fingers, which animates approximately the movements of a human hand. This model can be operated by brainwave signals from a Neurosky MindWaveTM Mobile 2 Brainwave Sensing Headset, by human gesture using Leap Motion device, by voice command using Google Assistant, or by web-based interface. All operations can be monitored by a user interface on web server, with the support from a Raspberry Pi board. The experiments show that the average accuracy of our mindwave control prototype is about 83%, which is similar to most of previous high-cost solutions, and can go up to nearly 100% for the case that the data acquisition time is larger than 10 s (which improves 2–8% compared to previous works). This model would be highly useful in practice, especially, for people with disabilities who cannot use their hands, as well as in academia when it is used for undergraduate students’ experiments on robotics.

Based on the previously reported 13-residue antibacterial peptide analog, brevinin-1EMa (FLGWLFKVASKVL, peptide B), we attempted to design a novel class of antiviral peptides. For this goal, we synthesized three peptides with different stapling positions (B–2S, B–8S, and B–5S). The most active antiviral peptide with the specific stapling position (B–5S) was further modified in combination with either cysteine (B–5S3C, B–5S7C, and B–5S10C) or hydrophilic amino acid substitution (Bsub and Bsub-5S). Overall, B, B–5S, and Bsub-5S peptides showed superior antiviral activities against enveloped viruses such as retrovirus, lentivirus, hepatitis C virus, and herpes simplex virus with EC50 values of 1–5 μM. Murine norovirus, a non-enveloped virus, was not susceptible to the virucidal actions of these peptides, suggesting the virus membrane disruption as their main antiviral mechanisms of action. We believe that these three novel peptides could serve as promising candidates for further development of membrane-targeting antiviral drugs in the future.

Procalcitonin is gaining momentum in the study of protozoal sepsis, but its utility as a biomarker has yet to be fully discovered in human babesiosis. A total of 33 cases of acute babesiosis dating between 2012 and 2019 were retrospectively collected from Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) and Stony Brook South Hampton Hospital (SHH), both of which are located on Long Island, NY. Cases were cross-referenced for the need for ICU admission, and the procalcitonin levels were measured by the use of BRAHMS Elecsys assay at SBUH and BRAHMS Architect assay at SHH. Our study demonstrated that the log-transformed procalcitonin levels had a linear correlation with log-transformed maximum parasitemia, which suggests that procalcitonin directly correlates with parasitemia values. Furthermore, when comparing values that predict ICU admission, our ROC analysis of procalcitonin demonstrated similar AUC values to the percentage of parasitemia, suggesting that procalcitonin may assist in determining the severity of disease. We demonstrate that procalcitonin may directly correlate with the parasitemia percentage and have prognostic capabilities, which suggests that procalcitonin may have biomarker potential in human babesiosis.

Dendrobium anosmum Lindl. var. semialba has variants of flower shapes. Currently, it has high economic value and is favored on the market. In this study, the genetic relationship of Dendrobium anosmum Lindl. var. semialba species was determined based on the analysis of chloroplast matK, rbcL gene sequences. The matK and rbcL genes of twelve species were amplified and their DNA sequenced. These DNA sequences were compared, calculated genetic distance and constructed phylogenetic tree. The results showed that 100% of samples were amplified and sequenced successfully. The analysis of matK sequences showed that 12 species had very high genetic similarity with the low genetic distance of 0 - 0.001; the nucleotide sequences were almost unchanged except for one variable nucleotide position in TB1 and TB1 was in a separate branch of the phylogenetic tree. The analysis of rbcL sequences showed that all species had a low genetic distance of 0 - 0.012 and had 7 mutant positions in nucleotide sequences of TB1 and TB5. These species were in a separate branch of the phylogenetic tree while the other species were grouped in the other branch of the phylogenetic tree. The study provided a reliable molecular database of the Dendrobium anosmum Lindl. var. semialba for identification, classification, biodiversity assessment and conservation of genetic resources.

The solid-state structures of the synthetic psychedelic 5-methoxy-N,N-di-n-propyltryptamine (5-MeO-DPT) {systematic name: N-[2-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl]-N-propylpropan-1-amine}, C17H25N2O, and its fumarate salt, bis(5-methoxy-N,N-di-n-propyltryptammonium) fumarate (systematic name: bis{N-[2-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl]-N-propylpropan-1-aminium} but-2-enedioate), 2C17H25N2O+·C4H2O4 2−, are reported. The freebase has a single tryptamine molecule in the asymmetric unit. The molecules are linked together by N—H...N hydrogen bonds in zigzag chains along the [010] direction. The fumarate salt has a single tryptammonium cation and half of a fumarate dianion in the asymmetric unit. The tryptammonium and fumarate ions are held together in one-dimensional chains by a series of N—H...O hydrogen bonds. These chains are combinations of R 4 4(22) rings, and C 2 2(14) and C 4 4(28) parallel chains along [001].

Introduction. Employment plays an important role in vocational development. However, not many studies of job search among international students have been reported. Aim. The current study aims to examine the relationship between self-efficacy, behavioural intentions, and perceived discrimination in the field of job search (JS). Methodology and research methods. The authors used Social Cognitive Model of Career Self-management (CSM) as the theoretical background to explain the relationships among the constructs of self-efficacy, behavioural intentions and perceived discrimination in JS. The study was conducted in a Chinese cultural context (Taiwan) with a sample of 301 international students from Southeast Asian countries. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to test the model about the relationships between the three variables in the study. Results and scientific novelty. The research findings show that self-efficacy strongly predicts behavioural intentions. Besides, self-efficacy partly mediates the influence of perceived discrimination on behavioural intentions. A quantitative research method was applied to investigate the population of international students, which has not been much reported in previous studies. This indicates that the influence of a contextual factor (e.g. perceived discrimination) on behavioural intentions is direct and indirect through self-efficacy. Practical significance. The research findings can be used by practitioners for enhancing self-efficacy and behavioural intentions as well as helping international students to cope with discrimination in the JS process. Настоящее исследование направлено на изучение взаимосвязи между самоэффективностью, поведенческими намерениями и предполагаемой дискриминацией в области поиска работы. Методология и методы исследования. Авторы использовали социально-когнитивную модель карьерного самоуправления в качестве теоретической основы для объяснения связей между конструкциями самоэффективности, поведенческих намерений и предполагаемой дискриминации в области поиска работы. Исследование проводилось в китайском культурном контексте (Тайвань) с участием 301 иностранного студента из стран Юго-Восточной Азии. Моделирование структурных уравнений использовалось для проверки модели взаимосвязи между тремя переменными в исследовании. Результаты и научная новизна. Результаты проведенной работы показывают, что самоэффективность с большой степенью вероятности предсказывает поведенческие намерения. Кроме того, она частично опосредует влияние воспринимаемой дискриминации на поведенческие намерения. Авторы применили метод количественного исследования для изучения контингента иностранных студентов, о котором не так много сообщалось в предыдущих работах. Выяснилось, что влияние контекстуального фактора (например, предполагаемой дискриминации) на поведенческие намерения является прямым и косвенным посредством самоэффективности. Практическая значимость. Результаты настоящего исследования могут быть использованы специалистами для повышения самоэффективности и поведенческих намерений иностранных студентов, а также для оказания им помощи в преодолении дискриминации в процессе поиска работы. Habitat-forming cold-water corals (CWCs) represent a key component of deep-sea benthic communities and a priority target for conservation. Although research efforts have been mounting to try and identify the drivers of CWC distributions, progress has been limited by the scarcity of ecological data. The present work employs habitat suitability models (HSMs) to estimate spatial distributions, environmental drivers and co-existence patterns of 14 habitat-forming CWCs in the Azores, an area considered a hotspot of coral diversity in the Atlantic. The modelled CWCs showed a strong bathymetric zonation, which seems to be determined by the vertical stratification of water masses in the region. In particular, the modelled CWCs can be clustered in four groups named after the isopycnal (vertical) layers in which Atlantic water masses are organized: species restricted to upper water masses, species extending down from upper water masses, species restricted to intermediate water masses and species extending up from deep water masses. Horizontal patterns further indicate that the Azores Current and different production regimes north and south of the archipelago likely influence the distribution of CWCs in sub-surface waters. Such results have important implications for the regional management of deep-sea benthic communities and, in particular, for the design of representative networks of protected areas. The combined habitat of all modelled species covered only 11%. Given that they all possess the characteristics of benthic foundation organisms and represent indicator taxa of vulnerable marine ecosystems all the modelled species should be viewed as important targets for conservation. The lace coral Errina dabneyi deserves particular attention since this species appears to be endemic to the Azores and has a very limited estimated distribution.

Our objective is to illustrate how to create and maintain a healthy flow of carefully curated communication between a research team and a community of interest using the principles of cultural brokering. We begin with a brief critical review of the existing literature on cultural brokering between immigrant and academic communities. We follow this review with a case study of cultural brokering between a research team at Tulane University and the Vietnamese American immigrant community in New Orleans. We draw upon specific examples from an ongoing collaboration to illustrate types of cultural conflict that are common to academic and community collaborations, and we discuss how different types and features of cultural brokering have helped to resolve these conflicts and keep the project(s) moving forward. We summarize a set of traits, potential roles/contributions, and training and operating strategies for a cultural broker.

The synthesis and solid-state structure of the fumarate salt of the synthetic psychedelic 5-meth­oxy-N,N-di­allyl­tryptamine (5-MeO-DALT) is reported., The title compound, bis­(N,N-diallyl-5-meth­oxy­tryptammonium) (5-MeO-DALT) fumarate (systematic name: bis­{N-[2-(5-meth­oxy-1H-indol-3-yl)eth­yl]- N-(prop-2-en-1-yl)prop-2-en-1-aminium} (E)-but-2-enedioate), 2C17H23N2O+·C4H2O4 2−, has a single tryptammonium cation and half of a fumarate dianion in the asymmetric unit. The tryptammonium and fumarate ions are held together in one-dimensional chains by a series of N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. These chains are combinations of R 4 4(22) rings, and C 2 2(14) and C 4 4(28) parallel chains along [111].

In this study, the usage of α-amylase and wheatgrass powder supplement was investigated to reduce the fermentation duration and fortify the nutritional values of banh bo (white honeycomb cake), an indigenous cake made from rice flour and tapioca starch in Vietnam. The results indicate that the addition of 0.05 wt% and 0.07 wt% α-amylase could significantly reduce total fermentation duration from 11 to 6 h while the fortification with 0.5–2 wt% wheat grass did not significantly influence the process. All the batters exhibited strong non-Newtonian behavior, but higher consistency of batters was obtained with the addition of α-amylase. All the resultant cakes did not display a significant difference in porosity, except the cake of 0.2 wt% wheat grass. The hardness and chewiness values decreased gradually with the increase in added enzyme content, but their increasing trends were observed with the addition of wheatgrass. The supplement of wheatgrass powder significantly increased the contents of chlorophyll and phenolic compounds, which both were responsible for the increments in antioxidant capacity. Hedonic tests indicate that the sensory attributes of the final products were successfully maintained. The study may provide insights in cereal-based fermented foods.
