Abstract

The hard X-ray emission from magnetars and other isolated neutron stars remains under-explored. An instrument with higher sensitivity to hard X-rays is critical to understanding the physics of neutron star magnetospheres and also the relationship between magnetars and Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). High sensitivity to hard X-rays is required to determine the number of magnetars with hard X-ray tails, and to track transient non-thermal emission from these sources for years post-outburst. This sensitivity would also enable previously impossible studies of the faint non-thermal emission from middle-aged rotation-powered pulsars (RPPs), and detailed phase-resolved spectroscopic studies of younger, bright RPPs. 2. 2FHL J1745.1–3035: A Newly Discovered, Powerful Pulsar Wind Nebula Candidate

Abstract

We present a multi-epoch, multi-observatory X-ray analysis for 2FHL J1745.1–3035, a newly discovered very high-energy Galactic source detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) located in close proximity to the Galactic Center ( l = 358.°5319; b = −0.°7760). The source shows a very hard γ -ray photon index above 50 GeV, Γ _γ = 1.2 ± 0.4, and is found to be a TeV emitter by the Fermi–LAT. We conduct a joint XMM-Newton, Chandra, and NuSTAR observing campaign, combining archival XMM-Newton observations, to study the X-ray spectral properties of 2FHL J1745.1–3035 over a time span of over 20 yr. The joint X-ray spectrum is best fitted as a broken-power-law model with break energy E _b ∼ 7 keV: the source is very hard at energies below 10 keV, with Γ _1 ∼ 0.6, and significantly softer in the higher energy range measured by NuSTAR with Γ _2 ∼ 1.9. We also perform a spatially resolved X-ray analysis with Chandra, finding evidence for marginal extension (up to an angular size r ∼ 5″), a result that supports a compact pulsar wind nebula scenario. Based on the X-ray and γ -ray properties, 2FHL J1745.1–3035 is a powerful pulsar wind nebula candidate. Given its nature as an extreme TeV emitter, further supported by the detection of a coincident TeV extended source HESS J1745-303, 2FHL J1745.1–3035 is an ideal candidate for a follow up with the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array.

3. Nitrogen removal from ammonium-contaminated groundwater using dropping nitrification–cotton-based denitrification reactor

Abstract

A novel dropping nitrification–cotton-based denitrification reactor was developed for total nitrogen (N) removal from ammonium (NH4+)-contaminated groundwater. The nitrogen removal ability of the reactor was evaluated for 91 days. A 1 m-long dropping nitrification unit was fed with synthetic groundwater containing 30 mg-NH4+-N/L at a flow rate of 2.16 L/d. The outlet of the dropping nitrification unit was connected to the cotton-based denitrification unit. The NH4+ present in the groundwater was completely oxidized (>90% nitrification efficiency) by nitrifying bacteria to nitrite (NO2–) and nitrate (NO3–) in the dropping nitrification unit. Subsequently, the generated NO2– and NO3– were denitrified (96%–98% denitrification efficiency) by denitrifying bacteria in the cotton-based denitrification unit under anoxic conditions. Organic carbons released from the cotton presumably acted as electron donors for heterotrophic denitrification. Nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria were colonized in higher abundance in the dropping nitrification and cotton-based denitrification units, respectively. The total N removal rate and efficiency of the dropping nitrification–cotton-based denitrification reactor for 91 days were 58.1–66.9 mg-N/d and 96%–98%, respectively. Therefore, the dropping nitrification–cotton-based denitrification reactor will be an efficient, sustainable, and promising option for total N removal from NH4+-contaminated groundwater. HIGHLIGHTS A dropping nitrification–cotton-based denitrification reactor was proposed for N removal.; NH4+ in the groundwater was nitrified to NO3– in dropping nitrification unit.; The generated NO3– was denitrified to N2 in cotton-based denitrification unit.; Nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria were colonized in nitrification and denitrification units, respectively.; The reactor achieved 96%–98% total N removal from groundwater.;

Abstract

G106.3+2.7, commonly considered to be a composite supernova remnant (SNR), is characterized by a boomerang-shaped pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and two distinct (“head” and “tail”) regions in the radio band. A discovery of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission ( E _γ > 100 GeV) followed by the recent detection of ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray emission ( E _γ > 100 TeV) from the tail region suggests that G106.3+2.7 is a PeVatron candidate. We present a comprehensive multiwavelength study of the Boomerang PWN (100″ around PSR J2229+6114) using archival radio and Chandra data obtained two decades ago, a new NuSTAR X-ray observation from 2020, and upper limits on gamma-ray fluxes obtained by Fermi-LAT and VERITAS observatories. The NuSTAR observation allowed us to detect a 51.67 ms spin period from the pulsar PSR J2229+6114 and the PWN emission characterized by a power-law model with Γ = 1.52 ± 0.06 up to 20 keV. Contrary to the previous radio study by Kothes et al., we prefer a much lower PWN B -field ( B ∼ 3 μ G) and larger distance ( d ∼ 8 kpc) based on (1) the nonvarying X-ray flux over the last two decades, (2) the energy-dependent X-ray size of the PWN resulting from synchrotron burn-off, and (3) the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) data. Our SED model suggests that the PWN is currently re-expanding after being compressed by the SNR reverse shock ∼1000 yr ago. In this case, the head region should be formed by GeV–TeV electrons injected earlier by the pulsar propagating into the low-density environment.

Abstract

We report on multiwavelength target-of-opportunity observations of the blazar PKS 0735+178, located 2.°2 away from the best-fit position of the IceCube neutrino event IceCube-211208A detected on 2021 December 8. The source was in a high-flux state in the optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, and GeV γ -ray bands around the time of the neutrino event, exhibiting daily variability in the soft X-ray flux. The X-ray data from Swift-XRT and NuSTAR characterize the transition between the low-energy and high-energy components of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), and the γ -ray data from Fermi-LAT, VERITAS, and H.E.S.S. require a spectral cutoff near 100 GeV. Both the X-ray and γ -ray measurements provide strong constraints on the leptonic and hadronic models. We analytically explore a synchrotron self-Compton model, an external Compton model, and a lepto-hadronic model. Models that are entirely based on internal photon fields face serious difficulties in matching the observed SED. The existence of an external photon field in the source would instead explain the observed γ -ray spectral cutoff in both the leptonic and lepto-hadronic models and allow a proton jet power that marginally agrees with the Eddington limit in the lepto-hadronic model. We show a numerical lepto-hadronic model with external target photons that reproduces the observed SED and is reasonably consistent with the neutrino event despite requiring a high jet power.

Abstract

We have measured and corrected chromatic X-Y coupling at an interaction point to improve the luminosity of KEKB. We have measured the beam position of betatron oscillations induced by the kicker using turn-by-turn beam position monitors. A phase space structure reconstructed by the beam position provides us not only the Twiss parameters but also information regarding X-Y coupling. We have also determined chromatic X-Y coupling using the measured X-Y coupling at each momentum deviation from the designed beam energy. Skew sextupole magnets are used to correct the chromatic X-Y coupling.

22. A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON BRAIN-TROPISM OF BETANODAVIRUSES IN YOUNG MARINE FISH: A WAY TO PERFORM HOST SPECIFICITY

Abstract

Investigation on the brain-tropism was carried out through direct injection of the virus into the vitreous body of the eye using five marine fish species: kelp grouper, striped jack, Japanese flounder, threeline grunt and yellow tail. When the brains of intravitreously-injected fish (106 TCID50 Fish-1) were examined at 72 h post infection, striped jack nervous necrosis virus (SJNNV; the type species of the genus Betanodavirus) was frequently detected from striped jack and flounder while kelp grouper nervous necrosis virus (KGNNV) were detected from kelp grouper, striped jack, and flounder. No constant growth of the virus was noticed in the brains of threeline grunt and yellow tail. Considering that natural outbreaks of VNN (viral nervous necrosis) have been frequently reported in the former three species but not in the later two. The present result supports that the brain cell-tropism might be one of the tools to perform the host-specificity of betanodavirus.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The presence of depressive symptoms in patients with non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is an important research topic; however, the prevalence of depressive symptoms and the factors that influence their development are unclear.OBJECTIVE: To analyse the association between CES-D (Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale) scores and clinical parameters such as age, disease duration, pulmonary function, imaging findings, blood data, physical functions, sleep disturbances, respiratory symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQOL).METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional retrospective study of 114 patients with NTM-PD at a single centre from March 2016 to January 2021 to evaluate the relationship between CES-D scores and clinical parameters.RESULTS: Participants had a median age of 64 years; 32.5% of them had depressive symptoms. Disease duration, albumin, C-reactive protein, pulmonary function, dyspnoea, exercise capacity, respiratory symptoms, cough-related HRQOL and sleep disturbances were associated with depressive symptoms. Binomial logistic regression analyses indicated that the CES-D score was significantly associated with cough-related HRQOL and sleep disturbances.CONCLUSION: A high percentage of NTM-PD patients in this study experienced depressive symptoms, and these patients had abnormalities of various clinical parameters. Cough-related HRQOL and sleep disturbance had a strong influence on the development of depressive symptoms.

Abstract

The CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) is a high-energy astroparticle physics space experiment installed on the International Space Station (ISS), developed and operated by Japan in collaboration with Italy and the United States. The CALET mission goals include the investigation of possible nearby sources of high-energy electrons, of the details of galactic particle acceleration and propagation, and of potential signatures of dark matter. CALET measures the cosmic-ray electron+positron flux up to 20 TeV, gamma-rays up to 10 TeV, and nuclei with Z=1 to 40 up to 1,000 TeV for the more abundant elements during a long-term observation aboard the ISS. Starting science operation in mid-October 2015, CALET performed continuous observation without major interruption with close to 20 million triggered events over 10 GeV per month. Based on the data taken during the �rst two-years, we present an overview of CALET observations: 1) Electron+positron energy spectrum, 2) Nuclei analysis, 3) Gamma-ray observation including a characterization of on-orbit performance. Results of the electromagnetic counterpart search for LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave events are discussed as well.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian fibroma is a solid tumor that belongs to sex-cord stromal cell tumor of ovary commonest benign tumor of ovarian stroma. A 43-year-old female admitted in obstetric and gynecology CASE REPORT: department with complain of abdominal pain for 2 months and heavy menses. Ovarian fibroma are DISCUSSION: common benign ovarian tumor accounts for approximately 1-4% of ovarian tumor usually unilateral but bilateral ovarian fibroma is rare entity. Large ovarian fibroma can be associated with ascites and right sided pleural effusion (Meigs syndrome).

Abstract

Purpose To examine the predictive and prognostic value of preoperative Systemic Immune-inflammation Index (SII) in patients with radio-recurrent prostate cancer (PCa) treated with salvage radical prostatectomy (SRP). Materials and methods This multicenter retrospective study included 214 patients with radio-recurrent PCa, treated with SRP between 2007 and 2015. SII was measured preoperatively (neutrophils × platelets/lymphocytes) and the cohort was stratified using optimal cut-off. Uni- and multivariable logistic and Cox regression analyses were performed to evaluate the predictive and prognostic value of SII as a preoperative biomarker. Results A total of 81 patients had high preoperative SII (≥ 730). On multivariable logistic regression modeling, high SII was predictive for lymph node metastases (OR 3.32, 95% CI 1.45–7.90, p = 0.005), and non-organ confined disease (OR 2.55, 95% CI 1.33–4.97, p = 0.005). In preoperative regression analysis, high preoperative SII was an independent prognostic factor for cancer-specific survival (CSS; HR 10.7, 95% CI 1.12–103, p = 0.039) and overall survival (OS; HR 8.57, 95% CI 2.70–27.2, p p = 0.036) and OS (HR 5.98, 95% CI 1.67–21.44, p = 0.006). Notably, the addition of SII to preoperative reference models improved the C-index for the prognosis of CSS (89.5 vs. 80.5) and OS (85.1 vs 77.1). Conclusions In radio-recurrent PCa patients, high SII was associated with adverse pathological features at SRP and survival after SRP. Preoperative SII could help identify patients who might benefit from novel imaging modalities, multimodal therapy or a closer posttreatment surveillance.

Abstract

Abstract The SHiP-charm project was proposed to measure the associated charm production induced by 400 GeV/c protons in a thick target, including the contribution from cascade production. An optimisation run was performed in July 2018 at CERN SPS using a hybrid setup. The high resolution of nuclear emulsions acting as vertex detector was complemented by electronic detectors for kinematic measurements and muon identification. Here we present first results on the analysis of nuclear emulsions exposed in the 2018 run, which prove the capability of reconstructing proton interaction vertices in a harsh environment, where the signal is largely dominated by secondary particles produced in hadronic and electromagnetic showers within the lead target.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Reproduction is an essential aspect of marriage. Primary infertility is the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected coitus. Secondary infertility implies inability to conceive for 5 years of unprotected coitus after last conception including ectopic and recurrent abortions. The schedule of evaluation or investigations in infertility range from detailed clinical history, physical examination, basal body temperature, vaginal cytology, cervical mucus changes, endometrial biopsy, laparoscopy, ultrasonography, follicular study, hormone assays to immunoglobulin profile and new genetics. However, the most reliable method for diagnosing the cause of infertility in women remains the histopathological study of endometrial tissue. METHODS This is a prospective study carried out at a teaching hospital with the help of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 01/12/2014 to 01/08/2016. Patients who were reporting for infertility were the subjects of the study. The study included 150 cases of infertility. RESULTS Out of a total of 150 cases studied, 111 cases were primary infertility and 39 cases were secondary infertility with maximum incidence in the age group of 19-23 years and 29-33 years in primary and secondary infertility respectively with 2-13 years duration after marriage. Proliferative (anovulatory) endometrium is seen in 31 cases of primary and 15 cases of secondary infertility. Tuberculosis is seen in 2 cases primary infertility. CONCLUSIONS Primary infertility is more common than secondary infertility. It was observed that total duration of infertility in study group was 2-13 years. Anovulatory endometrium is the commonest cause of endometrium followed by tuberculous endometrium. Endometrial hyperplasia is the least common cause of infertility.

Abstract

Very-high Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astroparticle physics is a relatively young field, and observations over the past decade have surprisingly revealed almost two hundred VHE emitters which appear to act as cosmic particle accelerators. These sources are an important component of the Universe, influencing the evolution of stars and galaxies. At the same time, they also act as a probe of physics in the most extreme environments known - such as in supernova explosions, and around or after the merging of black holes and neutron stars. However, the existing experiments have provided exciting glimpses, but often falling short of supplying the full answer. A deeper understanding of the TeV sky requires a significant improvement in sensitivity at TeV energies, a wider energy coverage from tens of GeV to hundreds of TeV and a much better angular and energy resolution with respect to the currently running facilities. The next generation gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), is the answer to this need. In this talk I will present this upcoming observatory from its design to the construction, and its potential science exploitation. CTAO will allow the entire astronomical community to explore a new discovery space that will likely lead to paradigm-changing breakthroughs. In particular, CTA has an unprecedented sensitivity to short (sub-minute) timescale phenomena, placing it as a key instrument in the future of multi-messenger and multi-wavelength time domain astronomy. I will conclude the talk presenting the first scientific results obtained by the LST-1, the prototype of one CTAO telescope type - the Large-Sized Telescope, that is currently under commission., PoS: Proceedings of Science, 395, ISSN:1824-8039, Proceedings of 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2021)
