Objectives: To study the presentation and management of the exstrophy-epispadias complex in adolescents and adults and to evaluate the outcome of the repair. Subjects and methods: This retrospective review of our medical records of adult patients with an exstrophy-epispadias complex managed between January 2010 and June 2015 included one female and 7 male patients. Only patients aged above 10 years who had not undergone any surgical treatment during childhood were included in the study. All patients were subjected to preoperative biopsy from the urinary bladder plate. None of them underwent cystectomy. Seven patients underwent urinary bladder augmentation using ileocystoplasty, bladder neck reconstruction with para-urethral tissue closure using a wedge of pubic bone, and single-stage epispadias repair. In one patient epispadias repair was not done due to intraoperative hemodynamic instability. Results: All patients are continent but one in whom epispadias repair was not done and who is waiting for epispadias repair. One patient has developed a urethro-cutaneous fistula at the base of the penis. Two patients developed urinary bladder stones, and both of them were managed by minimally invasive methods. All the patients are on clean intermittent self-catheterization. They are all doing well socially and psychologically. Conclusion: Though exstrophy-epispadias in adolescents and adults is a rare entity, the described modified surgical technique provides good results and improves the patients’ social and psychological well being.

Compositional and geochemical profiles were established for a 59-cm sediment core extracted from a small pothole pond in a Taxodium (bald cypress) swamp 830 m inland from Lake Pontchartrain in south-eastern Louisiana, USA. The core consists of a top organic unit (peat to clayey peat) from 0–29 cm above a bottom clay unit at 30–59 cm depth. Four distinct zones, marked by gradual changes in organic content and elemental concentrations, occur in the clay unit. These changes probably reflect two cycles of slowly changing water depths. Hurricane Isaac’s signature, a brown clay band at 3–5 cm, is identified based on the stratigraphic and compositional correspondence with the storm’s event layer, documented from nearby sites. Sedimentary and geochemical similarities between this material and clastic bands at 15–19 and 23–25 cm identify those two intervals as potentially representing earlier floods. The Cl/Br ratio presents a potentially useful method for distinguishing fluvial and marine flooding.

This study investigates the several strongly nonlinear oscillators (Van der Pol, Duffing and Rayleigh) for which we have applied the most powerful and advanced optimal semi-analytical technique: optimal and modified homotopy perturbation method (OM-HPM) for the convergent semi-analytical series solution. The numerical simulation demonstrates the high accuracy of the OM-HPM, which is straightforward, does not require any domain decomposition, special transformation, or pade approximations to get the convergent series solution. The key features for the high accuracy of the OM-HPM lies on the best optimal auxiliary linear operator. Therefore, OM-HPM offering a valuable tool for engineers and researcher to analyze the complex nonlinear oscillator.

Abstract The present work explores the potential for observing multiple reentrant localization behavior in a double-stranded helical (DSH) system, extending beyond the conventional nearest-neighbor hopping (NNH) interaction. The DSH system is considered to have hopping dimerization in each strand, while also being subjected to a transverse electric field. The inclusion of an electric field serves the dual purpose of inducing quasi-periodic disorder and strand-wise staggered site energies. Two reentrant localization regions are identified: one exhibiting true extended behavior in the thermodynamic limit, while the second region shows quasi-extended characteristics with partial spreading within the helix. The DSH system exhibits three distinct single-particle mobility edges linked to localization transitions present in the system. The analysis in this study involves examining various parameters such as the single-particle energy spectrum, inverse participation ratio, local probability amplitude, and more. Our proposal, combining achievable hopping dimerization and induced correlated disorder, presents a unique opportunity to study phenomenon of reentrant localization, generating significant research interest.

Fresh bovine pericardium from the local abattoir was cut into 2 cm x 2 cm size pieces and crosslinked with 1% solution of glutaraldehyde (GA), formaldehyde (FA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), hexamethylene di-isocyanate (HMDI) and 1-ethly-3-(3-dimethylaminoprophl)-carbodiimide (EDC). Other pieces were made acellular and then crosslinked with above chemical agents. In-vivo biocompatibility of the biomaterials was determined by subcutaneous implantation in rabbits. The implants were retrieved back on day 14, 30 and 90 post-implantation and subjected to macroscopic and microscopic evaluation. The host inflammatory response, neovasular tissue formation (fibroblasts, fine capillaries), depostition of neocollagen and penetration of host inflammatory responses in the grafted matrix were evaluated.

Abstract Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) after Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) often requires stent implantation leading to cardiovascular injury and cytokine release. Stent implantation induces cytokines production including TNFα, Hs-CRP, IL-1ß, IL2 receptor, IL6, IL8, and IL10, but their co-release is not extensively established. In 311 PCI patients with Drug-Eluting Stent (DES) implantation, we statistically evaluate the correlation of these cytokines release in various clinical conditions, stent numbers, and medications. We observed that TNFα is moderately correlated with IL-1ß (r2 = 0.59, p = 0.001) in diabetic PCI patients. Similarly, in NSTEMI (Non-ST Segment Elevation) patients, TNFα is strongly correlated with both IL-1ß (r2 = 0.97, p = 0.001) and IL8 (r2 = 0.82, p = 0.001). In CAD (Coronary Artery Disease)-diagnosed patients TNFα is highly correlated (r2 = 0.84, p = 0.0001) with IL8 release but not with IL-1ß. Abstract This work explores the potential for achieving correlated disorder in electrical circuits by utilizing reactive elements. By establishing a direct correspondence between the tight-binding Hamiltonian and the admittance matrix of the circuit, a novel approach is presented. The localization phenomena within the circuit are investigated through the analysis of the two-port impedance. To introduce correlated disorder, the Aubry–André–Harper (AAH) model is employed. Both one-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional AAH structures are examined and effectively mapped to their tight-binding counterparts. Notably, transitions from a high-conducting phase to a low-conducting phase are observed in these circuits, highlighting the impact of correlated disorder.

Metalloenzymes are the most proficient nature catalysts that are responsible for diverse biochemical transformations introducing excellent selectivity and performing at high rates, using intricate mutual relationships between metal ions and proteins. Inspired by nature, chemists started using naturally occurring proteins as templates to harbor non-native metal catalysts for the sustainable synthesis of molecules for pharmaceutical, biotechnological and industrial purposes. Therefore, metalloenzymes are the relevant targets for the design of artificial biocatalysts. The search and development of new scaffolds capable of hosting metals with high levels of selectivity could significantly expand the scope of bio-catalysis. To meet this challenge, herein, three native scaffolds: [1Fe-4Cys] (rubredoxin), [3Fe-4S] (ferredoxin), and [S2MoS2CuS2MoS2]-ORP (orange protein) protein scaffolds are case studies describing templates for the synthesis of non-native monomeric to mixed metal–sulfur clusters, which mimic native Ni containing metalloenzymes including [Ni-Fe] Hydrogenase and [Ni-Fe] CO Dehydrogenase. The non-native metal-substituted metalloproteins are not only useful for catalysis but also as spectroscopic probes.

Living organisms use selenium mainly in the form of selenocysteine in the active site of oxidoreductases. Here, selenium’s unique chemistry is believed to modulate the reaction mechanism and enhance the catalytic efficiency of specific enzymes in ways not achievable with a sulfur-containing cysteine. However, despite the fact that selenium/sulfur have different physicochemical properties, several selenoproteins have fully functional cysteine-containing homologues and some organisms do not use selenocysteine at all. In this review, selected selenocysteine-containing proteins will be discussed to showcase both situations: (i) selenium as an obligatory element for the protein’s physiological function, and (ii) selenium presenting no clear advantage over sulfur (functional proteins with either selenium or sulfur). Selenium’s physiological roles in antioxidant defence (to maintain cellular redox status/hinder oxidative stress), hormone metabolism, DNA synthesis, and repair (maintain genetic stability) will be also highlighted, as well as selenium’s role in human health. Formate dehydrogenases, hydrogenases, glutathione peroxidases, thioredoxin reductases, and iodothyronine deiodinases will be herein featured.

SARS-CoV2 virus is believed to be originated from a closely related bat Coronavirus RaTG13 lineage and uses its key entry-point residues in S1 protein to attach with human ACE2 receptor. SARS-CoV2 could enter human from bat with its poorly developed entry-point residues much before its known appearance with slower mutation rate or recently with efficiently developed entry-point residues with higher mutation rate or through an intermediate host. Temporal analysis of SARS-CoV2 genome shows that its nucleotide substitution rate is as low as 27nt/year with an evolutionary rate of 9×10−4/site/year, which is well within the range of other RNA virus (10−4 to 10−6/site/year). TMRCA of SARS-CoV2 from bat RaTG13 lineage appears to be in between 9 and 14 years. Evolution of a critical entry-point residue Y493Q needs two substitutions with an intermediate virus carrying Y493H (Y>H>Q) but has not been identified in known twenty-nine bat CoV virus. Genetic codon analysis indicates that SARS-CoV2 evolution during propagation in human disobeys neutral evolution as nonsynonymous mutations surpass synonymous mutations with the increase of ω (dn/ds). Taken together, genetic data suggests that SARS-CoV2 is originated long time back before its appearance in human in 2019. Increase of ω signifies that SARs-CoV2 evolution is approaching towards diversifying selection from purifying selection predictably for its infection power to evade multiple human organs.

In this work, we perform a numerical study of magnetoresistance in a one-dimensional quantum heterostructure, where the change in electrical resistance is measured between parallel and antiparallel configurations of magnetic layers. This layered structure also incorporates a non-magnetic spacer, subjected to quasi-periodic potentials, which is centrally clamped between two ferromagnetic layers. The efficiency of the magnetoresistance is further tuned by injecting unpolarized light on top of the two sided magnetic layers. Modulating the characteristic properties of different layers, the value of magnetoresistance can be enhanced significantly. The site energies of the spacer is modified through the well-known Aubry–André and Harper (AAH) potential, and the hopping parameter of magnetic layers is renormalized due to light irradiation. We describe the Hamiltonian of the layered structure within a tight-binding (TB) framework and investigate the transport properties through this nanojunction following Green’s function formalism. The Floquet–Bloch (FB) anstaz within the minimal coupling scheme is introduced to incorporate the effect of light irradiation in TB Hamiltonian. Several interesting features of magnetotransport properties are represented considering the interplay between cosine modulated site energies of the central region and the hopping integral of the magnetic regions that are subjected to light irradiation. Finally, the effect of temperature on magnetoresistance is also investigated to make the model more realistic and suitable for device designing. Our analysis is purely a numerical one, and it leads to some fundamental prescriptions of obtaining enhanced magnetoresistance in multilayered systems.

In this work, we put forward a prescription of achieving spin selective electron transfer by means of light irradiation through a tight-binding (TB) magnetic chain whose site energies are modulated in the form of well known Aubry–Andre–Harper (AAH) model. The interaction of itinerant electrons with local magnetic moments in the magnetic system provides a misalignment between up and down spin channels which leads to a finite spin polarization (SP) upon locating the Fermi energy in a suitable energy zone. Both the energy channels are significantly affected by the irradiation which is directly reflected in degree of spin polarization as well as in its phase. We include the irradiation effect through Floquet ansatz and compute spin polarization coefficient by evaluating transmission probabilities using Green’s function prescription. Our analysis can be utilized to investigate spin dependent transport phenomena in any driven magnetic system with quasiperiodic modulations.

Adsorption of organic pollutants, toxic metal ions, and removal of harmful bacteria can give us clean and pure drinkable water from wastewater resources. Respective magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized using a cheaper and greener way in an open-air environment with the use of crude latex of Jatropha curcas (JC) and leaf extract of Cinnamomum tamala (CT). Characterization of MNPs had been performed by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, powdered X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The size ranges of the synthesized MNPs were observed in between 20–42 nm for JC-Fe3O4 and within 26–35 nm for CT-Fe3O4 by FE-SEM images. The effect of synthesized magnetic nanoparticles in wastewater treatment (bacterial portion), dye adsorption, toxic metal removal as well as antibacterial, antioxidant, and cytotoxic activities were studied. This purification will lead to an increase in the resources of pure drinking water in the future.
