Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication has been proposed as a potential solution to improve the robustness and safety of autonomous vehicles by improving coordination and removing the barrier of non-line-of-sight sensing. Cooperative Vehicle Safety (CVS) applications are tightly dependent on the reliability of the underneath data system, which can suffer from loss of information due to the inherent issues of their different components, such as sensors failures or the poor performance of V2X technologies under dense communication channel load. Particularly, information loss affects the target classification module and, subsequently, the safety application performance. To enable reliable and robust CVS systems that mitigate the effect of information loss, we proposed a Context-Aware Target Classification (CA-TC) module coupled with a hybrid learning-based predictive modeling technique for CVS systems. The CA-TC consists of two modules: A Context-Aware Map (CAM), and a Hybrid Gaussian Process (HGP) prediction system. Consequently, the vehicle safety applications use the information from the CA-TC, making them more robust and reliable. The CAM leverages vehicles path history, road geometry, tracking, and prediction; and the HGP is utilized to provide accurate vehicles' trajectory predictions to compensate for data loss (due to communication congestion) or sensor measurements' inaccuracies. Based on offline real-world data, we learn a finite bank of driver models that represent the joint dynamics of the vehicle and the drivers' behavior. We combine offline training and online model updates with on-the-fly forecasting to account for new possible driver behaviors. Finally, our framework is validated using simulation and realistic driving scenarios to confirm its potential in enhancing the robustness and reliability of CVS systems.

Organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently emerged as a potential candidate for large-scale and low-cost photovoltaic devices. However, the technology is still susceptible to degradation issues and toxicity concerns due to the presence of lead (Pb). Therefore, investigation on ideal methods to deal with PSC wastes once the device attains its end-of-life is crucial and to recycle the components within the cell is the most cost effective and energy effective method by far. This paper reported on a layer-by-layer extraction approach to recycle the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass substrate which is the most expensive component in the device architecture of mesoporous planar PSC. By adapting the sequential removal of each layer, chemical properties of individual components, including spiro-OMeTAD and gold can be preserved, enabling the material to be easily reused. It also ensured that the toxic Pb component could be isolated without contaminating other materials. The removal of all individual layers allows the retrieval of FTO conductive glass which can be used in various applications that are not only restricted to photovoltaics. Comparison of electrical, morphological and physical properties of recycled FTO glasses to commercial ones revealed minimal variations. This confirmed that the recycling approach was useful in retrieving the substrate without affecting its physicochemical properties.

Continuous use of chemical fertilizers gradually shrinks the crop yield and quality, and these adverse effects can be reduced by adopting new sustainable practices such as the use of manure, biofertilizers, and nano fertilizers. Limited information is existed on the application of Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus thuringiensis microbes to improve lemon seedlings growth, physiology, and fruit formation. Therefore, the current study is aimed to evaluate the effects of T. harzianum and B. thuringiensis microbes mixing with low levels of inorganic fertilizer (NPK) on the plant growth, development, and quality of limau nipis (key lemon) fruits. The lemon seedlings growing media were inoculated during transplanting with T. harzianum and B. thuringiensis at various NPK fertilizers under polybagged conditions. The seedlings were grown around eighteen (18) months after inoculation with biofertilizers followed by Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five (5) replications. The results showed that T. harzianum with 50 g of NPK treatment (T2) increased the seedling's height, branch number, leaf height, ground area, and absolute growth rate (AGR) plant height by 50.12%, 107.84%, 17.91%, 17.91%, 116.93%, and 56.02%, respectively, over the control treatment. The number of leaves (60.82%), leaf area (42.75%), stem diameter (27.34%), specific leaf area (SLA) (39.07%), leaf area index (LAI) (54.40%), and absolute growth rate for leaf number (73.86%), leaf area (306.85%) and stem diameter (46.8%) of lemon seedlings increased significantly with B. thuringiensis plus 50 g NPK treatment (T3). The applications of B. thuringiensis with 25 g NPK fertilizer treatment (T5) increased leaf fresh weight (LFW), leaf dry weight (LDW), leaf moisture content (LMC), specific leaf weight (SLW), leaf relative growth rate (RGR), and chlorophyll content by 96.45%, 56.78%, 13.60%, 24.76%, 45.45%, and 16.22%, respectively, over the control group. In addition, T5 treatment increased the fruits number, individual fruit weight, fruit diameter, fruit dimension, leaf total soluble solids (TSS), and fruit TSS content of lemon tress by 81.81%, 55.52%, 43.54%, 25.69%, 89.47%, and 70.78% compared to the control treatment. Furthermore, soil inoculation of B. thuringiensis significantly increased the pulp to peel ratio and juice content of lemon fruits. From this study, it can be concluded that soil inoculation of both T. harzianum and B. thuringiensis with 25-50% NPK during transplanting improved plant growth, physiology, and fruit quality of limau nipis trees.

Organolead trihalide perovskite absorber layers are potential contenders in solar energy harvesting technologies because of their competitive lower fabrication cost, high power conversion efficiency, and ease of processing. The structural, interfacial and morphological properties are the key aspects to determine the stability and photon-to-current conversion efficiency of Perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Most contemporary research has emphasised on enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskites by changing the fabrication process, solvent engineering, or precursor solution. With changes in these variables, the structure and morphology of perovskites also change, which affects the photon-to-current conversion efficiency and the stability of the PSCs. However, no stockpiled records have aided in conducting corresponding research outcomes on this perspective. In this review, we summarise the effect of fabrication method on the structure and morphology, as well as the PCE and stability of PSCs. This review will help readers decipher the scientific and technological challenges concerning hybrid inorganic–organic PSCs.

As synthetic antioxidants that are widely used in foods are known to cause detrimental health effects, studies on natural additives as potential antioxidants are becoming increasingly important. In this work, the total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of Ficus carica Linn latex from 18 cultivars were investigated. The TPC of latex was calculated using the Folin–Ciocalteu assay. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) were used for antioxidant activity assessment. The bioactive compounds from F. carica latex were extracted via maceration and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with 75% ethanol as solvent. Under the same extraction conditions, the latex of cultivar ‘White Genoa’ showed the highest antioxidant activity of 65.91% ± 1.73% and 61.07% ± 1.65% in DPPH, 98.96% ± 1.06% and 83.04% ± 2.16% in ABTS, and 27.08 ± 0.34 and 24.94 ± 0.84 mg TE/g latex in FRAP assay via maceration and UAE, respectively. The TPC of ‘White Genoa’ was 315.26 ± 6.14 and 298.52 ± 9.20 µg GAE/mL via the two extraction methods, respectively. The overall results of this work showed that F. carica latex is a potential natural source of antioxidants. This finding is useful for further advancements in the fields of food supplements, food additives and drug synthesis in the future.

The performance of cooperative vehicular applications is tightly dependent on the reliability of the underneath Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication technology. V2X standards, such as Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) and Cellular-V2X (C-V2X), which are passing their research phase before being mandated in the US, are supposed to serve as reliable circulatory systems for the time-critical information in vehicular networks; however, they are still heavily suffering from scalability issues in real traffic scenarios. The technology-agnostic notion of Model-Based Communications (MBC) has been proposed in our previous works as a promising paradigm to address the scalability issue and its performance, while acquiring different modeling strategies, has been vastly studied. In this work, the modeling capabilities of a powerful non-parametric Bayesian inference scheme, i.e., Gaussian Processes (GPs), is investigated within the MBC context with more details. Our observations reveal an important potential strength of GP-based MBC scheme, i.e., its capability of accurately modeling different driving behavioral patterns by utilizing only a limited size GP kernel bank. This interesting aspect of integrating GP inference with MBC framework, which has been verified in this work using realistic driving data sets, introduces this architecture as a strong and appealing candidate to address the scalability challenge. Atmospheric carbon dioxide enrichment (eCO2) can enhance plant carbon uptake and growth1–5, thereby providing an important negative feedback to climate change by slowing the rate of increase of the atmospheric CO2 concentration6. Although evidence gathered from young aggrading forests has generally indicated a strong CO2 fertilization effect on biomass growth3–5, it is unclear whether mature forests respond to eCO2 in a similar way. In mature trees and forest stands7–10, photosynthetic uptake has been found to increase under eCO2 without any apparent accompanying growth response, leaving the fate of additional carbon fixed under eCO2 unclear4,5,7–11. Here using data from the first ecosystem-scale Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment in a mature forest, we constructed a comprehensive ecosystem carbon budget to track the fate of carbon as the forest responded to four years of eCO2 exposure. We show that, although the eCO2 treatment of +150 parts per million (+38 per cent) above ambient levels induced a 12 per cent (+247 grams of carbon per square metre per year) increase in carbon uptake through gross primary production, this additional carbon uptake did not lead to increased carbon sequestration at the ecosystem level. Instead, the majority of the extra carbon was emitted back into the atmosphere via several respiratory fluxes, with increased soil respiration alone accounting for half of the total uptake surplus. Our results call into question the predominant thinking that the capacity of forests to act as carbon sinks will be generally enhanced under eCO2, and challenge the efficacy of climate mitigation strategies that rely on ubiquitous CO2 fertilization as a driver of increased carbon sinks in global forests. Carbon dioxide enrichment of a mature forest resulted in the emission of the excess carbon back into the atmosphere via enhanced ecosystem respiration, suggesting that mature forests may be limited in their capacity to mitigate climate change.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are potential candidates for the latest solar cell technologies because of their advantages: low manufacturing cost, flexibility, light weight, easy processing, color variety, and translucent features. However, an important DSSC component, the sensitizer, still has an inefficient sunlight absorption profile, reducing cell efficiency. Several studies have been conducted on co-sensitization in the last decade to improve panchromaticity light absorption and increase DSSC performance by mixing dyes, absorbing different regions of the solar magnetic radiation spectrum, which allows designing, synthesize, and analyze various types of sensitizers and co-adsorbents. The dye samples of co-sensitization described thus far have focused on the selection of appropriate co-sensitizers for use in combination with well-known high-performing dyes, such as Zn-porphyrins to organic, Ru-based organic complexes to organic and organic to organic sensitizers. The co-dye DSSC device with Ru-organic dye (N719+7-BC), organic-organic dye (BD+U-01), and Zn-porphyrin-organic dye (SGT-149+SGT-021) as absorber exhibited the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.68%, 10.56%, and 14.26%, respectively superseding the PCE of each of the individual dyes. This study provides a detailed review of panchromaticity in DSSCs, covering the previous and most recent development in this field which will further contribute to the advancement of this area.

The efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is rapidly increasing, so that their long-term operational stability has become a major focus for commercialization and market adoption. The development of novel strategies and materials to improve the stability of small and large solar modules without compromising power conversion efficiency (PCE) is an ongoing challenge. Ionic liquids (ILs) are emerging as useful additives, solvents, and charge transport materials for the preparation of highly efficient perovskite films. Perovskite crystallizes slowly in ILs to form large and uniform grains, and PSCs fabricated with high-quality perovskite films are efficient and stable. Herein we review recently developed systemic device engineering, and we discuss the impact of ILs in the production of highly efficient and stable PSCs. This review is intended to serve as a guide to develop highly crystalline perovskite films with larger grains and more homogeneous morphologies, all of which contribute to enhancing the stability of PSC performance. Recent progress in the use of ILs as solvents and additives for PSCs is a significant step toward developing reliable perovskite photovoltaic devices. Finally, we discuss challenges and future research directions for the fabrication of efficient and stable PSCs.

Vapour pressure deficit (D) is projected to increase in the future as temperature rises. In response to increased D, stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthesis (A) are reduced, which may result in significant reductions in terrestrial carbon, water and energy fluxes. It is thus important for gas exchange models to capture the observed responses of gs and A with increasing D. We tested a series of coupled A-gs models against leaf gas exchange measurements from the Cumberland Plain Woodland (Australia), where D regularly exceeds 2 kPa and can reach 8 kPa in summer. Two commonly used A-gs models were not able to capture the observed decrease in A and gs with increasing D at the leaf scale. To explain this decrease in A and gs, two alternative hypotheses were tested: hydraulic limitation (i.e., plants reduce gs and/or A due to insufficient water supply) and non-stomatal limitation (i.e., downregulation of photosynthetic capacity). We found that the model that incorporated a non-stomatal limitation captured the observations with high fidelity and required the fewest number of parameters. Whilst the model incorporating hydraulic limitation captured the observed A and gs, it did so via a physical mechanism that is incorrect. We then incorporated a non-stomatal limitation into the stand model, MAESPA, to examine its impact on canopy transpiration and gross primary production. Accounting for a non-stomatal limitation reduced the predicted transpiration by ~19%, improving the correspondence with sap flow measurements, and gross primary production by ~14%. Given the projected global increases in D associated with future warming, these findings suggest that models may need to incorporate non-stomatal limitation to accurately simulate A and gs in the future with high D. Further data on non-stomatal limitation at high D should be a priority, in order to determine the generality of our results and develop a widely applicable model. © The Author(s) 2019. A successful integration of inorganic hole transporting material (HTM) for perovskite become one of the major concerns due to the instability issue with organic HTM. Inorganic NiO films as an efficient HTM for the inverted perovskite solar cell has been deposited by electron beam vapor deposition (EBPVD) technique instated of solution process. The X-Ray diffraction (XRD) peak of as-deposited substrate corresponding to (1 1 1) and (2 0 0) plane are dominating. The non-stoichiometry (1 1 1) in NiO thin film formation at influence its charge transfer characteristics. The FESEM confirms the successful non-stoichiometric deposition of NiO on FTO glass in an elemental wt% of O 2 (15.82) and Ni (23.62). The perovskite solar cells are fabricated in a device structure of Glass/TCO/NiO/Perovskite/PCBM/BCP/Ag. The deposited perovskite solar cells show higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) 10.80% with short circuit current density (Jsc) of 15.13 (mA cm−2), open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.967 (V), field factor (FF) of 73.83 (%) which also allows thinking of an alternative HTL other than organic HTL for realistic commercial purpose.

Third-generation solar cells are understood to be the pathway to overcoming the issues and drawbacks of the existing solar cell technologies. Since the introduction of graphene in solar cells, it has been providing attractive properties for the next generation of solar cells. Currently, there are more theoretical predictions rather than practical recognitions in third-generation solar cells. Some of the potential of graphene has been explored in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), but it has yet to be fully comprehended in the recent third-generation inorganic-organic hybrid perovskite solar cells. In this review, the diverse role of graphene in third-generation OPVs and DSSCs will be deliberated to provide an insight on the prospects and challenges of graphene in inorganic-organic hybrid perovskite solar cells.

Limestone aeolianites constitute karstic aquifers covering much of the western and southern Australian coastal fringe. They are a key groundwater resource for a range of industries such as winery and tourism, and provide important ecosystem services such as habitat for stygofauna. Moreover, recharge estimation is important for understanding the water cycle, for contaminant transport, for water management, and for stalagmite-based paleoclimate reconstructions. Caves offer a natural inception point to observe both the long-term groundwater recharge and the preferential movement of water through the unsaturated zone of such limestone. With the availability of automated drip rate logging systems and remote sensing techniques, it is now possible to deploy the combination of these methods for larger-scale studies of infiltration processes within a cave. In this study, we utilize a spatial survey of automated cave drip monitoring in two large chambers of Golgotha Cave, south-western Western Australia (SWWA), with the aim of better understanding infiltration water movement and the relationship between infiltration, stalactite morphology, and unsaturated zone recharge. By applying morphological analysis of ceiling features from Terrestrial LiDAR (T-LiDAR) data, coupled with drip time series and climate data from 2012 to 2014, we demonstrate the nature of the relationships between infiltration through fractures in the limestone and unsaturated zone recharge. Similarities between drip rate time series are interpreted in terms of flow patterns, cave chamber morphology, and lithology. Moreover, we develop a new technique to estimate recharge in large-scale caves, engaging flow classification to determine the cave ceiling area covered by each flow category and drip data for the entire observation period, to calculate the total volume of cave discharge. This new technique can be applied to other cave sites to identify highly focussed areas of recharge and can help to better estimate the total recharge volume.

The electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EBPVD) technique was selected for nickel oxide (NiOx) film deposition at room temperatures. NiOx film (18 nm thick) was deposited as a hole transporting material (HTM) for inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) onto a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)-coated glass substrate at a chamber vacuum pressure of 4.6×104 Pa. PSCs were fabricated as a glass/FTO/NiOx(HTM)/CH3NH3PbI3/PC61BM/BCP/Ag structure with as-deposited and annealed (500 °C for 30 min) NiOx films. Under 100 mW cm-2 illumination, as-deposited and annealed NiOx as HTM in PSCs (0.16 cm2) showed a high-power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.20% and 13.24%, respectively. The as-deposited and annealed PSCs retained 72.2% and 76.96% of their initial efficiency in ambient conditions, correspondingly. This study highlights the possibility of achieving highly crystalline and finely disseminated NiOx films by EBPVD for fabricating efficient inverted PSCs.

The fabrication of highly efficient nickel oxide (NiOx) thin film for optoelectronic devices is a challenging task because optoelectronic properties are considerably influenced by deposition technique and film thickness. The effect of thickness on the film properties of electron beam–physical vapour-deposited NiOx thin film has been investigated in this work. The influence of post-annealing treatment on the optoelectronic properties of the film was compared with that of the as-deposited one. Optical transparency gradually decreased upon the successive increment in thickness of the as-deposited and annealed films. The surface roughness of as-deposited films increased linearly with the increase in film thickness, but this behaviour was altered in post-annealed films. Spherical grains with high packing density were observed on the as-deposited films, but the grain size was altered substantially on the post-annealed films. The annealed films presented a higher work function than their corresponding as-deposited films. This work presents important insights into the design of photovoltaic devices with an effective deposition process, including a high material utilisation. Moreover, an attempt of fabricating inverted perovskite solar cell on as-deposited and annealing NiOx film as hole transporting material exhibited power conversion efficiency of 11.98% and 12.28%, individually. It was noticed that the high temperature annealing on NiOx film had a very little impact on the comparative photovoltaic performance of aforementioned PSC devices.

Caves are an ideal observatory of infiltration water in karstified limestone, and the application of remote sensing techniques can bring new insights toward flow patterns and processes. We present an exhaustive characterization of Golgotha Cave in SW Western Australia, based on a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) measurement campaign. The cave is developed in Quaternary age aeolianite (dune limestone) and its infiltration waters form speleothems. We collect ground-based LiDAR scans of the cave ceiling at three sites within the cave system. The resulting point-clouds are analyzed using mathematical morphology to determine statistical information on stalactite widths, lengths, and spatial distributions. We establish a relationship between stalactite diameter and length that is in agreement with the platonic ideal of stalactite shape. We relate stalactite density variation with topography of the cave ceiling and variations in hydraulic gradient. From this analysis, it appears that longer stalactites tend to occur in comparatively lower ceiling elevation, which, we hypothesize, represents greater mass of water in the limestone above the roof of the cave. We also investigate the relationship between stalactite distribution and ceiling features such as fractures. We apply this to identify different types of possible flow patterns such as matrix flow and fracture flow. This analysis demonstrates a spatial variability, with one site having linear groups of stalactites and another site mostly dominated by stalactite clusters.

Hydraulic conductivity is one of the most critical and at the same time one of the most uncertain parameters in many groundwater models. One problem commonly faced is that the data are usually not collected at the same scale as the discretized elements used in a numerical model. Moreover, it is common that different types of hydraulic conductivity measurements, corresponding to different spatial scales, coexist in a studied domain, which have to be integrated simultaneously. Here we address this issue in the context of Image Quilting, one of the recently developed multiple-point geostatistics methods. Based on a training image that represents fine-scale spatial variability, we use the simplified renormalization upscaling method to obtain a series of upscaled training images that correspond to the different scales at which measurements are available. We then apply Image Quilting with such a multiscale training image to be able to incorporate simultaneously conditioning data at several spatial scales of heterogeneity. The realizations obtained satisfy the conditioning data exactly across all scales, but it can come at the expense of a small approximation in the representation of the physical scale relationships. In order to mitigate this approximation, we iteratively apply a kriging-based correction to the finest scale that ensures local conditioning at the coarsest scales. The method is tested on a series of synthetic examples where it gives good results and shows potential for the integration of different measurement methods in real-case hydrogeological models.
