Search

We present the Living Swift-XRT Point Source catalogue (LSXPS) and real-time transient detector. This system allows us for the first time to carry out low-latency searches for new transient X-ray events fainter than those available to the current generation of wide-field imagers, and report their detection in near real-time. Previously, such events could only be found in delayed searches, e.g. of archival data; our low-latency analysis now enables rapid and ongoing follow up of these events, enabling the probing of timescales previously inaccessible. The LSXPS is, uniquely among X-ray catalogues, updated in near real-time, making this the first up-to-date record of the point sources detected by a sensitive X-ray telescope: the Swift-X-ray Telescope (XRT). The associated upper limit calculator likewise makes use of all available data allowing contemporary upper limits to be rapidly produced on-demand. These facilities, which enable the low-latency transient system are also fully available to the community, providing a powerful resource for time-domain and multi-messenger astrophysics., Comment: Replaced with post-refereeing accepted version of the paper. Classical novae are shock-powered multi-wavelength transients triggered by a thermonuclear runaway on an accreting white dwarf. V1674 Her is the fastest nova ever recorded (time to declined by two magnitudes is t_2=1.1 d) that challenges our understanding of shock formation in novae. We investigate the physical mechanisms behind nova emission from GeV gamma-rays to cm-band radio using coordinated Fermi-LAT, NuSTAR, Swift and VLA observations supported by optical photometry. Fermi-LAT detected short-lived (18 h) 0.1-100 GeV emission from V1674 Her that appeared 6 h after the eruption began; this was at a level of (1.6 +/- 0.4)x10^-6 photons cm^-2 s^-1. Eleven days later, simultaneous NuSTAR and Swift X-ray observations revealed optically thin thermal plasma shock-heated to kT_shock = 4 keV. The lack of a detectable 6.7 keV Fe K_alpha emission suggests super-solar CNO abundances. The radio emission from V1674 Her was consistent with thermal emission at early times and synchrotron at late times. The radio spectrum steeply rising with frequency may be a result of either free-free absorption of synchrotron and thermal emission by unshocked outer regions of the nova shell or the Razin-Tsytovich effect attenuating synchrotron emission in dense plasma. The development of the shock inside the ejecta is unaffected by the extraordinarily rapid evolution and the intermediate polar host of this nova., 20 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Accepted to MNRAS

On 2021 August 8, the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi erupted again, after an interval of 15.5 yr. Regular monitoring by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory began promptly, on August 9.9 (0.37 day after the optical peak), and continued until the source passed behind the Sun at the start of November, 86 days later. Observations then restarted on day 197, once RS Oph emerged from the Sun constraint. This makes RS Oph the first Galactic recurrent nova to have been monitored by Swift throughout two eruptions. Here we investigate the extensive X-ray datasets from 2006 and 2021, as well as the more limited data collected by EXOSAT in 1985. The hard X-rays arising from shock interactions between the nova ejecta and red giant wind are similar following the last two eruptions. In contrast, the early super-soft source (SSS) in 2021 was both less variable and significantly fainter than in 2006. However, 0.3-1 keV light-curves from 2021 reveal a 35 s quasi-periodic oscillation consistent in frequency with the 2006 data. The Swift X-ray spectra from 2021 are featureless, with the soft emission typically being well parametrized by a simple blackbody, while the 2006 spectra showed much stronger evidence for superimposed ionized absorption edges. Considering the data after day 60 following each eruption, during the supersoft phase the 2021 spectra are hotter, with smaller effective radii and lower wind absorption, leading to an apparently reduced bolometric luminosity. Soil constraints limit crop water and nutrient extraction and lead to yield loss globally. In rainfed agriculture, the selection of crop species more likely to yield well under constrained conditions is an important management tool. However, information on the most appropriate crops is often difficult to access due to its publication in a wide range of disparate sources and the various measures of crop tolerance used. This study aimed to improve our ability to identify crops for constrained areas in rainfed subtropical cropping systems by compiling published information that had assessed the grain yield response to acidic, saline, or sodic conditions of 17 cereal, pulse, and oilseed crops. This information was used to develop a ‘traffic light’ system for salinity and acidity to provide guidance on when soil pH or the electrical conductivity of a saturated soil extract (ECe) are likely to be ‘good’, ‘potentially limiting’ or ‘poor’ for grain yield. Crops were also ranked according to their likely ability to yield well under saline, acidic, or sodic conditions. For all crops, the point at which grain yield was affected by soil constraints was variable and there was often only a small amount of published information available to help guide the identification of tolerance limits and rankings, particularly for sodicity. Many studies were also conducted under experimental conditions that differed from rainfed farming, which can affect the transferability of results. Confidence in the tolerance limits and rankings is thus only moderate and further work is required to confirm their applicability.

Dispersive soils limit crop growth and significantly impact world food production. Although numerous reviews have examined soil dispersion, many focus on irrigated systems and fail to differentiate the approaches required for rainfed agriculture. This review seeks to fill this gap by focusing on the impact, identification and management of dispersive soils in rainfed areas. Dispersive soils can have large impacts on crop production because of their adverse physical, chemical and biological effects, with this impact particularly large in rainfed systems where irrigation water is unavailable to supplement crop water supply and assist with amelioration. However, the identification of these soils is challenging and tests that can reliably relate soil characteristics to crop performance are lacking. Recent work has found that first identifying consistently lower yielding locations (using yield mapping or proximal/remote sensing) and then using traditional soil testing to identify the potential cause/s of the yield loss may be a promising approach, although this requires refinement. Knowledge of the type of dispersive soil (e.g., saline/non-saline, acidic/alkaline/neutral) and where constraints occur in the profile (surface or subsoil) must also be determined during identification as this will affect management approaches, particularly where multiple constraints need to be treated together to achieve yield increase. Improved understanding of how to economically use ameliorants and combine them to achieve maximum benefit in the presence of multiple constraints is needed. Greater appreciation of how to use agronomic management to improve crop growth in the presence of dispersive behaviour is also likely to increase profitability in rainfed systems where amelioration is often impractical or uneconomical. Dispersive soils are a major challenge for rainfed cropping, and so the refinement of our management approach can help improve profitability and productivity. We present results of time-series analysis of the first year of the Fairall 9 intensive disc-reverberation campaign. We used Swift and the Las Cumbres Observatory global telescope network to continuously monitor Fairall 9 from X-rays to near-infrared at a daily to subdaily cadence. The cross-correlation function between bands provides evidence for a lag spectrum consistent with the τ ∝ λ4/3 scaling expected for an optically thick, geometrically thin blackbody accretion disc. Decomposing the flux into constant and variable components, the variable component’s spectral energy distribution is slightly steeper than the standard accretion disc prediction. We find evidence at the Balmer edge in both the lag and flux spectra for an additional bound-free continuum contribution that may arise from reprocessing in the broad-line region. The inferred driving light curve suggests two distinct components, a rapidly variable (100 d) component with an opposite lag to the reverberation signal.

V3890 Sgr is a recurrent nova which has been seen in outburst three times so far, with the most recent eruption occurring on 2019 August 27 UT. This latest outburst was followed in detail by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, from less than a day after the eruption until the nova entered the Sun observing constraint, with a small number of additional observations after the constraint ended. The X-ray light-curve shows initial hard shock emission, followed by an early start of the super-soft source phase around day 8.5, with the soft emission ceasing by day 26. Together with the peak blackbody temperature of the super-soft spectrum being ~100 eV, these timings suggest the white dwarf mass to be high, ~1.3 M_sun. The UV photometric light-curve decays monotonically, with the decay rate changing a number of times, approximately simultaneously with variations in the X-ray emission. The UV grism spectra show both line and continuum emission, with emission lines of N, C, Mg and O being notable. These UV spectra are best dereddened using an SMC extinction law. Optical spectra from SMARTS show evidence of interaction between the nova ejecta and wind from the donor star, as well as the extended atmosphere of the red giant being flash-ionized by the super-soft X-ray photons. Data from NICER reveal a transient 83 s quasi-periodic oscillation, with a modulation amplitude of 5 per cent, adding to the sample of novae which show such short variabilities during their super-soft phase., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures (9 in colour). The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory followed up 18 gravitational wave (GW) triggers from the LIGO/Virgo collaboration during the O3 observing run in 2019/2020, performing approximately 6500 pointings in total. Of these events, four were finally classified (if real) as binary black hole (BH) triggers, six as binary neutron star (NS) events, two each of NSBH and Mass Gap triggers, one an unmodelled (Burst) trigger, and the remaining three were subsequently retracted. Thus far, four of these O3 triggers have been formally confirmed as real gravitational wave events. While no likely electromagnetic counterparts to any of these GW events have been identified in the X-ray data (to an average upper limit of 3.60 x 10^{-12} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} over 0.3-10 keV), or at other wavelengths, we present a summary of all the Swift-XRT observations performed during O3, together with typical upper limits for each trigger observed. The majority of X-ray sources detected during O3 were previously uncatalogued; while some of these will be new (transient) sources, others are simply too faint to have been detected by earlier survey missions such as ROSAT. The all-sky survey currently being performed by eROSITA will be a very useful comparison for future observing runs, reducing the number of apparent candidate X-ray counterparts by up to 95 per cent., Comment: 23 pages (including 4 pages of references, and a 4 page table in the appendix), 5 figures (4 in colour), accepted for publication in MNRAS. Context. The ~ 10–20 yr recurrent symbiotic nova RS Oph exploded on 2021 August 9, the seventh confirmed recorded outburst since 1898. During the previous outburst in 2006, the current fleet of X-ray space observatories was already in operation, and thanks to the longevity of Swift, XMM-Newton, and Chandra, a direct comparison between these two outbursts is possible. The Swift monitoring campaign revealed similar behaviour during the early shock phase but very different behaviour during the super-soft source (SSS) phase. Two XMM-Newton observations were made during the 2021 SSS phase on days 37.1 and 55.6 after the 2021 optical peak. We focus in this work on the bright SSS observation on day 55.6 and compare to SSS Chandra and XMM-Newton grating observations made on days 39.7, 54, and 66.9 after the 2006 optical peak. Aims. By exploring the reasons for the differences between the 2006 and 2021 outbursts, we aim to obtain a better general understanding of the emission and absorption mechanisms. While the emission mechanisms hold the key to the physics of novae and nuclear burning, absorption processes may dominate what we observe, and we aim to explore the cause of the gross initial variability in the observed SSS emission. Methods. We present a novel approach to down-scaling the observed (brighter) 2006 SSS spectra to match the 2021 day 55.6 spectrum by parameter optimisation of: (1) a constant factor (representing fainter source emission, smaller radius, eclipses, etc.), (2) a multi-ionisation photoelectric absorption model (representing different line-of-sight absorption), and (3) scaling with a ratio of two blackbody models with different effective temperatures (representing different brightness and colours). This model approach does not depend on a source model assuming the intrinsic source to be the same. It is therefore more sensitive to incremental changes than modelling approaches where source and absorption are modelled simultaneously. Results. The 2021d55.6 spectrum can be reproduced remarkably well by multiplying the (brighter) 2006d39.7 and 2006d54 spectra with the absorption model, while the 2006d66.9 spectrum requires additional colour changes to match the 2021.d55.6 spectrum. The 2006d39.7 spectrum much more closely resembles the 2021d55.6 spectrum in shape and structure than the same-epoch 2006d54 spectrum: The spectra on days 2006d39.7 and 2021d55.6 are richer in absorption lines with a deeper O I absorption edge, and blueshifts are higher (~1200 km s−1) than on day 2006d54 (~700 km s−1). In the SSS light curves on days 2006d39.7, 2006d54, and 2021d55.6, brightness and hardness variations are correlated, indicating variations of the O I column density. Only on day 2006d39.7, a 1000 s lag is observed. The 35 s period was detected on day 2021d55.6 with lower significance compared to 2006d54. Conclusions. We conclude that the central radiation source is the same, while absorption is the principal reason for observing lower soft-X-ray emission in 2021 than in 2006. This is consistent with a similar 2006 and 2021 [Fe X] line-flux evolution. We explain the reduction in line blueshift, depth in O I edge, and number of absorption lines from day 2006d39.7 to 2006d54 by deceleration and heating of the ejecta within the stellar wind of the companion. In 2021, less such deceleration and heating was observed, which we interpret as due to viewing at different angles through an inhomogeneous density distribution of the stellar wind, allowing free expansion in some directions (probed in 2021) and a higher degree of deceleration in others (probed in 2006). The higher absorption in 2021 can then be explained by the lower-temperature absorbing plasma being more opaque to soft X-rays. Our approach of scaling observations against observations is free of ambiguities from imperfect source models and can be applied to other grating spectra with complex continuum sources.

PDS 70 is a $\sim$5 Myr old star with a gas and dust disc in which several proto-planets have been discovered. We present the first UV detection of the system along with X-ray observations taken with the \textit{Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory} satellite. PDS 70 has an X-ray flux of 3.4$\times 10^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 0.3-10.0 keV range, and UV flux (U band) of 3.5$\times 10^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ . At the distance of 113.4 pc determined from Gaia DR2 this gives luminosities of 5.2$\times 10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and 5.4$\times 10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$ respectively. The X-ray luminosity is consistent with coronal emission from a rapidly rotating star close to the log $\frac{L_{\mathrm{X}}}{L_{\mathrm{bol}}} \sim -3$ saturation limit. We find the UV luminosity is much lower than would be expected if the star were still accreting disc material and suggest that the observed UV emission is coronal in origin., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present a detailed study of the 2019 outburst of the cataclysmic variable V1047~Cen, which hosted a classical nova eruption in 2005. The peculiar outburst occurred 14 years after the classical nova event and lasted for more than 400 days, reaching an amplitude of around 6 magnitudes in the optical. Early spectral follow-up revealed what could be a dwarf nova (accretion disk instability) outburst. However, the outburst duration, high velocity ($>$2000\,km\,s$^{-1}$) features in the optical line profiles, luminous optical emission, and presence of prominent long-lasting radio emission together suggest a phenomenon more exotic and energetic than a dwarf nova outburst. The outburst amplitude, radiated energy, and spectral evolution are also not consistent with a classical nova eruption. There are similarities between V1047~Cen's 2019 outburst and those of classical symbiotic stars, but pre-2005 images of the field of V1047~Cen indicate that the system likely hosts a dwarf companion, implying a typical cataclysmic variable system. Based on our multi-wavelength observations, we suggest that the outburst may have started with a brightening of the disk due to enhanced mass transfer or disk instability, possibly leading to enhanced nuclear shell burning on the white dwarf, which was already experiencing some level of quasi-steady shell burning. This eventually led to the generation of a wind and/or bipolar, collimated outflows. The 2019 outburst of V1047~Cen appears to be unique, and nothing similar has been observed in a typical cataclysmic variable system before, hinting at a potentially new astrophysical phenomenon., 36 pages, 24 figures, 9 tables. We present new XSHOOTER spectra of NLTT5306, a 0.44 $\pm$ 0.04\msun white dwarf in a short period (101\,min) binary system with a brown dwarf companion that is likely to have previously undergone common envelope evolution. We have confirmed the presence of H$\alpha$ emission and discovered Na I absorption associated with the white dwarf. These observations are indicative of accretion. Accretion is typically evidenced by high energy emission in the UV and X-ray regime. However our \textit{Swift} observations covering the full orbital period in three wavebands (uvw1, uvm2, uvw2) revealed no UV excess or modulation. We used the X-ray non-detection to put an upper limit on the accretion rate of 2$\times$10$^{-15}$\msun yr$^{-1}$. We compare NLTT5306 to similar accreting binaries with brown dwarf donors and suggest the inferred accretion rate could be from wind accretion or accretion from a debris/dust disk. The lack of evidence for a disk implies NLTT5306 is magnetically funnelling a weak wind from a potentially low gravity brown dwarf. The upper limit on the accretion rate suggests a magnetic field as low as 0.45\,kG would be sufficient to achieve this. If confirmed this would constitute the first detection of a brown dwarf wind and could provide useful constraints on mass loss rates., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The bright transient AT2018cow has been unlike any other known type of transient. Its high brightness, rapid rise and decay and initially nearly featureless spectrum are unprecedented and difficult to explain using models for similar burst sources. We present evidence for faint gamma-ray emission continuing for at least 8 days, and featureless spectra in the ultraviolet bands -- both unusual for eruptive sources. The X-ray variability of the source has a burst-like character. The UV-optical spectrum does not show any CNO line but is well described by a blackbody. We demonstrate that a model invoking the tidal disruption of a 0.1 - 0.4 Msun Helium White Dwarf (WD) by a 100,000 to one million solar mass Black Hole (BH) located in the outskirts of galaxy Z~137-068 could provide an explanation for most of the characteristics shown in the multi-wavelength observations. A blackbody-like emission is emitted from an opaque photosphere, formed by the debris of the WD disruption. Broad features showing up in the optical/infrared spectra in the early stage are probably velocity broadened lines produced in a transient high-velocity outward moving cocoon. The asymmetric optical/infrared lines that appeared at a later stage are emission from an atmospheric layer when it detached from thermal equilibrium with the photosphere, which undergoes more rapid cooling. The photosphere shrinks when its temperature drops, and the subsequent infall of the atmosphere produced asymmetric line profiles. Additionally, a non-thermal jet might be present, emitting X-rays in the 10-150 keV band.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most powerful explosions in the universe. The composition of the jets is, however, subject to debate\cite{Peer2015,Zhang2018}. Whereas the traditional model invokes a relativistic matter-dominated fireball with a bright photosphere emission component\cite{Meszaros2000}, the lack of the detection of such a component in some GRBs\cite{Abdo2009} has led to the conclusion that GRB jets may be Poynting-flux-dominated\cite{Zhang2009}. Furthermore, how efficiently the jet converts its energy to radiation is poorly constrained. A definitive diagnosis of the GRB jet composition and measurement of GRB radiative efficiency requires high-quality prompt emission and afterglow data, which has not been possible with the sparse observations in the past. Here we report a comprehensive temporal and spectral analysis of the TeV-emitting bright GRB 190114C. Its fluence is one of the highest of all GRBs detected so far, which allows us to perform a high-significance study on the prompt emission spectral properties and their variations down to a very short timescale of about 0.1 s. We identify a clear thermal component during the first two prompt emission episodes, which is fully consistent with the prediction of the fireball photosphere model. The third episode of the prompt emission is consistent with synchrotron radiation from the deceleration of the fireball. This allows us to directly dissect the fireball energy budget in a parameter-independent manner\cite{Zhang2021} and robustly measure a nearly $30\%$ radiative efficiency for this GRB. The afterglow microphysics parameters can be also well constrained from the data. GRB 190114C, therefore, exhibits the evolution of a textbook-version relativistic fireball, suggesting that fireballs can indeed power at least some GRBs with high efficiency.

An intrinsic gamma-ray burst afterglow Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are emitted by relativistic jets generated during the collapse of a massive star in a distant galaxy. The GRB itself lasts only a few seconds but is followed by an afterglow that can persist for hours or days. The H.E.S.S. Collaboration observed the afterglow of GRB 190829A, a nearby long GRB. The proximity of this burst allowed it to be detected at tera–electron volt energies that would otherwise be absorbed in the intergalactic medium. By analyzing the spectrum and light curve at x-ray and gamma-ray wavelengths, the authors show that the afterglow cannot be explained by standard models. Science , abe8560, this issue p. 1081

On 2020 February 24, during their third observing run ("O3"), the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory and Virgo Collaboration (LVC) detected S200224ca: a candidate gravitational wave (GW) event produced by a binary black hole (BBH) merger. This event was one of the best-localized compact binary coalescences detected in O3 (with 50%/90% error regions of 13/72 deg$^2$), and so the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory performed rapid near-UV/X-ray follow-up observations. Swift-XRT and UVOT covered approximately 79.2% and 62.4% (respectively) of the GW error region, making S200224ca the BBH event most thoroughly followed-up in near-UV (u-band) and X-ray to date. No likely EM counterparts to the GW event were found by the Swift BAT, XRT, or UVOT, nor by other observatories. Here we report on the results of our searches for an EM counterpart, both in the BAT data near the time of the merger, and in follow-up UVOT/XRT observations. We also discuss the upper limits we can place on EM radiation from S200224ca, and the implications these limits have on the physics of BBH mergers. Namely, we place a shallow upper limit on the dimensionless BH charge, $\hat{q} < 1.4 \times10^{-4}$, and an upper limit on the isotropic-equivalent energy of a blast wave $E < 4.1\times10^{51}$ erg (assuming typical GRB parameters)., 14 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

No-till (NT) farming has several advantages over traditional tillage due to its ability to control erosion, lower fuel costs, conserve soil moisture, and promote greater soil health. However, long-term NT systems can also suffer from several management challenges, largely centred around controlling weed, pest, and disease populations, the stratification of nutrients at the soil surface, and the development of soil structural issues, such as soil compaction. Occasional strategic tillage (ST), whereby otherwise NT soils receive infrequent tillage events, may be a management option that can help farmers deal with some of the negative effects of long-term NT practice. We have reviewed the information around the drivers prompting farmers to introduce ST into NT systems; the likely effects of ST on crop agronomy and soil physical, chemical, and biological properties; and the current evidence for how best to implement ST. Overall, there are likely to be both advantages and disadvantages associated with ST, and it is important that full consideration be given to the timing and type of tillage used to minimise any negative effects of tillage and maximise its positive impact. In addition, further research is required to better understand and guide growers on how to best use ST to their advantage on a range of soil types and cropping systems.

In this paper, we report on the observational performance of the Swift Ultra-violet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) in response to the Gravitational Wave alerts announced by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory and the Advanced Virgo detector during the O3 period. We provide the observational strategy for follow-up of GW alerts and provide an overview of the processing and analysis of candidate optical/UV sources. For the O3 period, we also provide a statistical overview and report on serendipitous sources discovered by Swift/UVOT. Swift followed 18 gravitational-wave candidate alerts, with UVOT observing a total of 424 deg^2. We found 27 sources that changed in magnitude at the 3 sigma level compared with archival u or g-band catalogued values. Swift/UVOT also followed up a further 13 sources reported by other facilities during the O3 period. Using catalogue information, we divided these 40 sources into five initial classifications: 11 candidate active galactic nuclei (AGN)/quasars, 3 Cataclysmic Variables (CVs), 9 supernovae, 11 unidentified sources that had archival photometry and 6 uncatalogued sources for which no archival photometry was available. We have no strong evidence to identify any of these transients as counterparts to the GW events. The 17 unclassified sources are likely a mix of AGN and a class of fast-evolving transient, and one source may be a CV., 25 pages, 6 figures and 5 tables. Submitted to MNRAS. The detection of GeV $\gamma$-ray emission from Galactic novae by $Fermi$-LAT has become routine since 2010, and is generally associated with shocks internal to the nova ejecta. These shocks are also expected to heat plasma to $\sim 10^7$ K, resulting in detectable X-ray emission. In this paper, we investigate 13 $\gamma$-ray emitting novae observed with the Neil Gehrels $Swift$ Observatory, searching for 1-10 keV X-ray emission concurrent with $\gamma$-ray detections. We also analyze $\gamma$-ray observations of novae V407 Lup (2016) and V357 Mus (2018). We find that most novae do eventually show X-ray evidence of hot shocked plasma, but not until the $\gamma$-rays have faded below detectability. We suggest that the delayed rise of the X-ray emission is due to large absorbing columns and/or X-ray suppression by corrugated shock fronts. The only nova in our sample with a concurrent X-ray/$\gamma$-ray detection is also the only embedded nova (V407 Cyg). This exception supports a scenario where novae with giant companions produce shocks with external circumbinary material and are characterized by lower density environments, in comparison with novae with dwarf companions where shocks occur internal to the dense ejecta., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures, submitted to ApJ

The 30-year recurrent symbiotic nova V3890 Sgr exploded 2019 August 28 and was observed with multiple X-ray telescopes. An XMM-Newton observation during the SSS phase captured a high degree of X-ray variability including a deep dip in the middle of the observation, an initial rise of similar depth and shape and, after the deep dip, smaller dips of 10% amplitude, which might be periodic over 18.1-minutes. An eclipse model of the dips yields clump sizes and orbital radii of 0.5-8 and 5-150 white dwarf radii, respectively. The simultaneous UV light curve shows no significant variations beyond slow fading. The RGS spectrum contains both residual shock emission at short wavelengths and the SSS emission at longer wavelengths. The shock temperature has clearly decreased compared to an earlier Chandra observation (day 6). The dip spectrum is dominated by emission lines like in U Sco. The intensity of underlying blackbody-like emission is much lower with the blackbody normalisation yielding a similar radius as during the brighter phases, while the lower bolometric luminosity is ascribed to lower T_eff. This would be inconsistent with clump occultations unless Compton scattering of the continuum emission reduces the photon energies to mimic a lower effective temperature. However, systematic uncertainties are high. The absorption lines in the bright SSS spectrum are blue-shifted by 870+/-10 km/s before the dip and 900+/-10 km/s, after the dip. The reproduction of the observed spectrum is astonishing, especially that only a single absorbing layer is necessary while three such layers are needed to reproduce the RGS spectrum of V2491 Cyg. The ejecta of V3890 Sgr are thus more homogeneous than many other SSS spectra indicate. Abundance determination is in principle possible but highly uncertain. Generally, solar abundances are found except for N and possibly O higher by an order of magnitude., Accepted for A&A

Soil fertility is fundamental to crop production and depends in part on soil and crop management strategies that improve soil organic carbon (SOC) and enhance the supply of nutrients to crops. Poor soil fertility is a major constraint to crop productivity. Hence, investment in practices that improve and conserve soil resources, such as soil organic matter (SOM), is likely to provide a large economic return to farmers with minimal impact on the environment. The appropriate management of crop residues is an example of one practice that can help maintain soil quality and provide carbon (C) and nutrients in soils. In this chapter, crop residue is defined as any aboveground plant biomass that is generated after crop harvesting in agricultural fields.

Classical novae are thermonuclear explosions that occur on the surfaces of white dwarf stars in interacting binary systems (Bode & Evans 2008). It has long been thought that the luminosity of classical novae is powered by continued nuclear burning on the surface of the white dwarf after the initial runaway (Gallaher & Starrfield 1978). However, recent observations of GeV $\gamma$-rays from classical novae have hinted that shocks internal to the nova ejecta may dominate the nova emission. Shocks have also been suggested to power the luminosity of events as diverse as stellar mergers (Metzger & Pejcha 2017), supernovae (Moriya et al. 2018), and tidal disruption events (Roth et al. 2016), but observational confirmation has been lacking. Here we report simultaneous space-based optical and $\gamma$-ray observations of the 2018 nova V906 Carinae (ASASSN-18fv), revealing a remarkable series of distinct correlated flares in both bands. The optical and $\gamma$-ray flares occur simultaneously, implying a common origin in shocks. During the flares, the nova luminosity doubles, implying that the bulk of the luminosity is shock-powered. Furthermore, we detect concurrent but weak X-ray emission from deeply embedded shocks, confirming that the shock power does not appear in the X-ray band and supporting its emergence at longer wavelengths. Our data, spanning the spectrum from radio to $\gamma$-ray, provide direct evidence that shocks can power substantial luminosity in classical novae and other optical transients., Comment: 49 pages including supplementary information. Increases in human populations and the emerging challenges of climate change mean that the world's agricultural systems will need to produce more food in an environment that is increasingly variable and where the quality of our natural resource base is declining. One central measure of an agricultural system's capacity to do this is its ability to preserve soil organic carbon (SOC), due to the pivotal role that this plays in maintaining soil physical, chemical, and biological properties and ultimately yield. This narrative review examines the literature published worldwide over the last 30 years to assess the impact of one widely applied agricultural management system, conservation agriculture (CA), on its ability to maintain SOC and the subsequent impacts on soil physical, chemical and biological properties, and yield. While the effects of CA on SOC worldwide are variable, with both increases and decreases observed, in regions where soil and climatic conditions are favorable for biomass production and where the system does not negatively impact yield, then CA can lead to higher amounts of SOC relative to conventionally managed systems, particularly in the surface of the soil profile. Where greater SOC occurs, these are also often accompanied by improvements in soil structure, water infiltration and soil water storage, plant nutrient availability, microbial biomass and diversity, and yield. However, where CA is used in certain environments (e.g., cold, wet environments with poorly drained soils) or where the CA system has not been well-adapted to local conditions, taking into account the specific agronomic, social, and environmental challenges present, then it may not be a successful system of management. Farmers require access to a range of tools and resources to allow them to identify if the principles of CA are likely to lead be appropriate for their situation and well-designed, locally adapted systems to successfully overcome the agronomic, social and economic challenges that can be associated with its use.

The conversion of soils from conventional till (CT) to no-till (NT) management has been identified as a soil management practice with the potential to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and help mitigate global climate change. However, the changes in SOC observed in NT systems have often been variable and dependent on a combination of factors, including climate, cropping system, soil type and crop/soil management. This had led to large variation in the rates of sequestration observed worldwide. In addition, there is concern some studies may have overestimated SOC sequestration rates due to methodological issues, with some authors concluding that once these methodological factors are considered, the potential for NT to sequester C on a worldwide scale may be limited. When the effect of NT on N2O and CH4 emissions are also considered, the benefits of NT management to mitigate climate change can be further eroded and NT may even increase net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - for example from fine textured and poorly drained soils where NT management increases N2O emissions. However, the potential for net C sequestration in NT systems is site specific and where site conditions/management favor SOC accumulation and lead to neutral or decreases in N2O production, significant decreases in global warming potential (GWP) can be observed. This highlights the need to consider the net GWP of NT on a soil type, site or regional basis.

No-till (NT) farming systems have revolutionized agriculture by improving erosion control, soil water storage, soil quality and, in many instances, yield and net farm income. The adoption of NT systems has increased at an exponential rate since the 1990s and they are now used on 12.5% of global croplands. However, while the development of NT systems has seen much success, there can be significant agronomic, economic and/or social challenges associated with their use that limit large scale worldwide adoption. In addition, where NT is not implemented as part of an integrated system that incorporates stubble retention and appropriate crop rotations to help manage weeds, diseases, pests and soil fertility, decreases in yield can be observed. A combination of research, education and good policy development to remove economic/institutional and social barriers to uptake are required to ensure the continued success of NT. In particular, the tailoring of NT farming systems according to individual locations and the introduction of some flexibility in approach to tillage management can provide an opportunity to manage some of the challenges of NT farming systems.

We present a comprehensive review of all observations of the eclipsing recurrent Nova LMC 1968 in the Large Magellanic Cloud which was previously observed in eruption in 1968, 1990, 2002, 2010, and most recently in 2016. We derive a probable recurrence time of 6.2 ± 1.2 yr and provide the ephemerides of the eclipse. In the ultraviolet-optical-IR photometry the light curve shows high variability right from the first observation around 2 d after eruption. Therefore no colour changes can be substantiated. Outburst spectra from 2016 and 1990 are very similar and are dominated by H and He lines longward of 2000 Å. Interstellar reddening is found to be E(B − V) = 0.07 ± 0.01. The super soft X-ray luminosity is lower than the Eddington luminosity and the X-ray spectra suggest the mass of the white dwarf (WD) is larger than 1.3 M☉. Eclipses in the light curve suggest that the system is at high orbital inclination. On day 4 after the eruption a recombination wave was observed in Fe II ultraviolet absorption lines. Narrow-line components are seen after day 6 and explained as being due to reionization of ejecta from a previous eruption. The UV spectrum varies with orbital phase, in particular a component of the He II 1640 Å emission line, which leads us to propose that early-on the inner WD Roche lobe might be filled with a bound opaque medium prior to the re-formation of an accretion disc. The recurrent nova (RN) V3890 Sgr was observed during the 7th day after the onset of its most recent outburst, with the Chandra ACIS-S camera and High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG). A rich emission line spectrum was detected, due to transitions of Fe-L and K-shell ions ranging from neon to iron. The measured absorbed flux is $\approx 10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 1.4-15 Angstrom range (0.77-8.86 keV). The line profiles are asymmetric, blue-shifted and skewed towards the blue side, as if the ejecta moving towards us are less absorbed than the receding ones. The full width at half maximum of most emission lines is 1000-1200 km s$^{-1}$, with some extended blue wings. The spectrum is thermal and consistent with a plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium with column density 1.3 $\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and at least two components at temperatures of about 1 keV and 4 keV, possibly a forward and a reverse shock, or regions with differently mixed ejecta and red giant wind. The spectrum is remarkably similar to the symbiotic RNe V745 Sco and RS Oph, but we cannot distinguish whether the shocks occurred at a distance of few AU from the red giant, or near the giant's photosphere, in a high density medium containing only a small mass. The ratios of the flux in lines of aluminum, magnesium and neon relative to the flux in lines of silicon and iron probably indicate a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD)., In press on the ApJ

Shocks in gamma-ray emitting classical novae are expected to produce bright thermal and non-thermal X-rays. We test this prediction with simultaneous NuSTAR and Fermi/LAT observations of nova V906 Car, which exhibited the brightest GeV gamma-ray emission to date. The nova is detected in hard X-rays while it is still gamma-ray bright, but contrary to simple theoretical expectations, the detected 3.5-78 keV emission of V906 Car is much weaker than the simultaneously observed >100 MeV emission. No non-thermal X-ray emission is detected, and our deep limits imply that the gamma-rays are likely hadronic. After correcting for substantial absorption (N_H ~ 2 x 10^23 cm^-2), the thermal X-ray luminosity (from a 9 keV optically-thin plasma) is just ~2% of the gamma-ray luminosity. We consider possible explanations for the low thermal X-ray luminosity, including the X-rays being suppressed by corrugated, radiative shock fronts or the X-rays from the gamma-ray producing shock are hidden behind an even larger absorbing column (N_H >10^25 cm^-2). Adding XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT observations to our analysis, we find that the evolution of the intrinsic X-ray absorption requires the nova shell to be expelled 24 days after the outburst onset. The X-ray spectra show that the ejecta are enhanced in nitrogen and oxygen, and the nova occurred on the surface of a CO-type white dwarf. We see no indication of a distinct super-soft phase in the X-ray lightcurve, which, after considering the absorption effects, may point to a low mass of the white dwarf hosting the nova., 19 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables; accepted to MNRAS

We present near infrared spectroscopy of Nova Herculis 2021 (V1674 Her), obtained over the first 70 days of its evolution. This fastest nova on record displays a rich emission line spectrum, including strong coronal line emission with complex structures. The hydrogen line fluxes, combined with a distance of 4.7 (+1.3 / -1.0) kpc, give an upper limit to the hydrogen ejected mass of 1.4 (+0.8 / -1.2) 10^{-3} solar masses. The coronal lines appeared at day 11.5, the earliest onset yet observed for any classical nova, before there was an obvious source of ionizing radiation. We argue that the gas cannot be photoionized, at least in the earliest phase, and must be shocked. Its temperature is estimated to be 10^{5.57 +/- 0.05} K on day 11.5. Tentative analysis indicates a solar abundance of aluminum and an underabundance of calcium, relative to silicon, with respect to solar values in the ejecta. Further, we show that the vexing problem of whether collisional or photoionization is responsible for coronal emission in classical novae can be resolved by correlating the temporal sequence in which the X-ray supersoft phase and the near-infrared coronal line emission appear., 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Conservation agriculture (CA) is considered a sustainable practice with the potential to maintain or increase crop productivity and improve environmental quality and ecosystem services. It typically improves soil quality and water conservation; however, its effect on crop productivity is highly variable and dependent on local conditions/management. Crop residue retention plays a crucial role in CA and can help to improve overall soil health and ultimately crop productivity and sustainability. However, weed control, herbicide resistance, and weed shift under residue retained fields is a major challenge. Moreover, CA can increase water infiltration and reduce soil loss and runoff. This reduces the surface transport of nitrate and phosphorus from agricultural fields and the eutrophication of water bodies, although leaching of nitrate to groundwater can potentially increase. In addition, CA has been proposed as one of the components in climate-smart agriculture, owing to its reduced period to seed/plant next crop, reduced soil disturbance and low consumption of fossil fuels. Therefore, compared to the conventional intensive tillage, CA has a greater potential for soil C sequestration, favors higher soil biodiversity, lowers greenhouse gas emission, and can assist in mitigating climate change. However, not all experiments report a positive impact. The understanding and decoding the site-specific complexities of CA system is important and requires a multidisciplinary approach.

The rapid response capabilities of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, together with the daily planning of its observing schedule, make it an ideal mission for following novae in the X-ray and UV bands, particularly during their early phases of rapid evolution and throughout the supersoft source interval. Many novae, both classical and recurrent, have been extensively monitored by Swift throughout their supersoft phase and later decline. We collect here results from observations of novae with outbursts which occurred between the start of 2006 and the end of 2017., 54 pages, 33 figure panels, 2 tables. We report the X-ray data analysis of two transient ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs, hereafter X1 and X2) located in the nearby galaxy NGC 7090. While they were not detected in the 2004 XMM-Newton and 2005 Chandra observations, their 0.3-10 keV X-ray luminosities reached $>3\times10^{39}\,\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$ in later XMM-Newton or Swift observations, showing increases in flux by a factor of $>80$ and $>300$ for X1 and X2, respectively. X1 showed indications of spectral variability: at the highest luminosity, its X-ray spectra can be fitted with a powerlaw ($\Gamma=1.55\pm0.15$), or a multicolour disc model with $T_{\mathrm{in}}=2.07^{+0.30}_{-0.23}$ keV; the X-ray spectrum became softer ($\Gamma=2.67^{+0.69}_{-0.64}$), or cooler ($T_\mathrm{in}=0.64^{+0.28}_{-0.17}$ keV) at lower luminosity. No strong evidence for spectral variability was found for X2. Its X-ray spectra can be fitted with a simple powerlaw model ($\Gamma=1.61^{+0.55}_{-0.50}$), or a multicolour disc model ($1.69^{+1.17}_{-0.48}$ keV). A possible optical counterpart for X1 is revealed in HST imaging. No optical variability is found, indicating that the optical radiation may be dominated by the companion star. Swift intensive accretion disk reverberation mapping of four AGN yielded light curves sampled $\sim$200-350 times in 0.3-10 keV X-ray and six UV/optical bands. Uniform reduction and cross-correlation analysis of these datasets yields three main results: 1) The X-ray/UV correlations are much weaker than those within the UV/optical, posing severe problems for the lamp-post reprocessing model in which variations in a central X-ray corona drive and power those in the surrounding accretion disk. 2) The UV/optical interband lags are generally consistent with $ \tau \propto \lambda^{4/3} $ as predicted by the centrally illuminated thin accretion disk model. While the average interband lags are somewhat larger than predicted, these results alone are not inconsistent with the thin disk model given the large systematic uncertainties involved. 3) The one exception is the U band lags, which are on average a factor of $\sim$2.2 larger than predicted from the surrounding band data and fits. This excess appears due to diffuse continuum emission from the broad-line region (BLR). The precise mixing of disk and BLR components cannot be determined from these data alone. The lags in different AGN appear to scale with mass or luminosity. We also find that there are systematic differences between the uncertainties derived by javelin vs. more standard lag measurement techniques, with javelin reporting smaller uncertainties by a factor of 2.5 on average. We present the 2SXPS (Swift-XRT Point Source) catalog, containing 206,335 point sources detected by the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) in the 0.3--10 keV energy range. This catalog represents a significant improvement over 1SXPS, with double the sky coverage (now 3,790 deg$^2$), and several significant developments in source detection and classification. In particular, we present for the first time techniques to model the effect of stray light -- significantly reducing the number of spurious sources detected. These techniques will be very important for future, large effective area X-ray mission such as the forthcoming Athena X-ray observatory. We also present a new model of the XRT point spread function, and a method for correctly localising and characterising piled up sources. We provide light curves -- in four energy bands, two hardness ratios and two binning timescales -- for every source, and from these deduce that over 80,000 of the sources in 2SXPS are variable in at least one band or hardness ratio. A transient in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 (Barnard's Galaxy) was discovered on 2017 August 2 and is only the second classical nova discovered in that galaxy. We conducted optical, near-ultraviolet, and X-ray follow-up observations of the eruption, the results of which we present here. This 'very fast' nova had a peak $V$-band magnitude in the range $-7.41>M_V>-8.33$ mag, with decline times of $t_{2,V} = 8.1 \pm 0.2$ d and $t_{3,V} = 15.2 \pm 0.3$ d. The early- and late-time spectra are consistent with an Fe II spectral class. The H$\alpha$ emission line initially has a full width at half-maximum intensity of $\sim 2400$ km s$^{-1}$ - a moderately fast ejecta velocity for the class. The H$\alpha$ line then narrows monotonically to $\sim1800$ km s$^{-1}$ by 70 d post-eruption. The lack of a pre-eruption coincident source in archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging implies that the donor is a main sequence, or possibly subgiant, star. The relatively low peak luminosity and rapid decline hint that AT 2017fvz may be a 'faint and fast' nova., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory carried out prompt searches for gravitational wave (GW) events detected by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration (LVC) during the second observing run ("O2"). Swift performed extensive tiling of eight LVC triggers, two of which had very low false-alarm rates (GW 170814 and the epochal GW 170817), indicating a high confidence of being astrophysical in origin; the latter was the first GW event to have an electromagnetic counterpart detected. In this paper we describe the follow-up performed during O2 and the results of our searches. No GW electromagnetic counterparts were detected; this result is expected, as GW 170817 remained the only astrophysical event containing at least one neutron star after LVC's later retraction of some events. A number of X-ray sources were detected, with the majority of identified sources being active galactic nuclei. We discuss the detection rate of transient X-ray sources and their implications in the O2 tiling searches. Finally, we describe the lessons learned during O2, and how these are being used to improve the \swift\ follow-up of GW events. In particular, we simulate a population of GRB afterglows to evaluate our source ranking system's ability to differentiate them from unrelated and uncatalogued X-ray sources. We find that $\approx$60-70% of afterglows whose jets are oriented towards Earth will be given high rank (i.e., "interesting" designation) by the completion of our second follow-up phase (assuming their location in the sky was observed), but that this fraction can be increased to nearly 100% by performing a third follow-up observation of sources exhibiting fading behavior., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS
